Open Thread: Cubs vs. Blue Jays, Wednesday 6/8

This one's short and quick, just to open discussion for today's game ... and to try to forget last night's fiasco.

This pitching matchup, on paper, is one of the biggest mismatches of the year, anywhere. But that's why they play the games, right?

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Sergio Mitre
 S. Mitre
Cubs
vs. Roy Halladay
 R. Halladay
Blue Jays
0-1 W-L 9-2
6.88 ERA 2.45
6 SO 65
5 BB 15
3 HR 7

Also, check out The View From The Bleachers where Joe Aiello has posted about his trip to West Tenn to see last Sunday's game vs. Carolina, including interviews with Jaxx players such as Matt Murton, Felix Pie, Brandon Sing, Jae-Kuk Ryu and Renyel Pinto.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Gulp
Talk about David and Goliath!
yeah...
It was unfair to start a monster like Mitre against a has-been like Halladay.
Yup
I agree with you. Halladay's two years in the MLB can't be compared with Mitré's Cy Young career.
You know something else...
Yahoo really needs to find a new picture of Sergio Mitre. Not only does he look scary, he doesn't even have that facial hair any more.
Agree
Sergio looks better clean cut. He looked like Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean.
I notice that Pie wears #20
Shooting for somebody's position on the big league club already. =)
Are you sure ...
... that the photo ain't doctored?  The 'stache and ... uh ... beard look fakey.  Drawn-on.
Um
As long as we are bringing up Pie, can we also convert Sing to RF for 2006? Just speculation. I want D-Lee to stick around long term.
Don't forget
Don't forget:

5-24-05: Mitre vs. Clemens, 4-2 Cubs.

For some reason
I can't get Gameday Audio to come work for me today (Grrrrrrr.), but from what I can see on Gameday, it looks like Mitre is doing all right. . . . yes?
mitre
is having a great game.  Macias is now batting for Mitre.  Mitre went 7 scoreless innings allowing only 2 hits, 1 of which was an infield single.  He was getting everything in the strike zone.  It's great to see our pitchers (Rusch, Koronka, and Mitre) picking up the slack while Wood and Prior are out.
Made for Wrigley
He was also getting a lot of ground ball outs (don't have the exact stats in front of me though) which was key today given the weather.
groundballs
he had 15 ground ball outs.
Anyone see Wood's stats today
He threw a 3-hitter and struck out two in a 45 pitch simulated game, against the might powerful Jose Macias and Enrique Wilson.
Unbelievable
On Monday I said to myself "We'd better win Monday and Tuesday, because there is no way Mitre is beating Halladay on Wednesday."

Shows you how much I know and how unpredictable this game is.

Giant Killer
Sergio Mitre, giant killer.

One notch in his cane for Clemens, and now one for Halladay. Who's next?

Sergio Mitre
Pitched the game of his life,
David
beat Goliath
Polonco for Urbina
Trade just announced. Where we interested in either
at this point ?  Not sure why Phillies want Urbina who
presumably would rather be a closer but  this could
be a prelude to shopping Wagner. In which case
are we interested or is Dempster it for the seaso?

FYI Mitre's line score looks shockingly like one
for Maddux.

Jessica

Urbina
will set up Wagner for the forseeable future.  The Phills aren't that far out of their division, and needed an eighth inning guy (much like we do) to solidify their bullpen.  Now they'll go Madson in the seventh, Uggy in the eighth, and Wagner in the ninth, and be able to use Cormier in lefty-lefty matchups.
I still hate Urbina
for blowing that kiss at the Cubs dugout during the NLCS in 2003. Probably still residual  jealousy because in the end it isn't that big a show up....but still. Grrr.
Not at this point
I think with the continued good play of the Neifi! and with Wuertz and Dempster settling into the eighth and ninth inning roles, I don't think we interested in either player anymore.

Polanco would have been a great bench replacement for Macias, but I'm pretty sure he'd never accept such a limited role.

Urbina
The Phillies are still in the hunt. Outside of Wagner, the bullpen isnt that great. They are seeking stronger support. As long as the Phillies are in the race, Wagner is not on the market. Polanco was a spare part they did not need.
