Bleed Cubbie Blue

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Cardinals, Friday 6/2, 7:10 CT

So.

Anything new since these teams last met?

Of course, that's a silly question. Since April 23, when Greg Maddux salvaged the last game of the series in St. Louis, the Cardinals are 23-12, and the Cubs have gone 10-24 ... the Cardinals picking up 12.5 games in the standings, and currently have the best record in the National League.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Sean Marshall
 S. Marshall
Cubs
vs. Sidney Ponson
 S. Ponson
Cardinals
3-3 W-L 4-0
5.03 ERA 2.92
38 SO 17
26 BB 12
4 HR 5
vs. StL -- vs. Cubs

This is a pitching rematch of the Sunday night game at Wrigley Field on April 9, when Michael Barrett's grand slam off Jason Isringhausen won the game for the Cubs. The Cardinals are the first team that Marshall will have faced twice, so we'll see if that makes any difference. It's the same for Ponson; that April 9 start still represents his worst Cardinal appearance.

Phil Nevin will make his Cub debut tonight. The guy most Cub fans love to hate, Jim Edmonds, is expected to go on the DL before tonight's game.

Telling stats: the Cubs are 4-13 in one-run games. That's terrible. They are 17-6 when scoring 4 runs or more, only 3-26 when scoring 3 runs or less. GET SOME OFFENSE GOING!

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Cardinals
I hate the Cardinals more than any team we face. I hope we can steal two from them. My only wish would be to have Edmonds take a heater to the ribs but that isn't going to happen tonight.....damn.
That 17-6 record is pretty surprising
I mean, most teams do well when scoring 4 or more, but if nothing else, it shows that when the Cubs score well, their pitchers help it stand up.  I'm sure there are plenty of teams that have lost more than six games when scoring 4 or more.

Of course, the fact that the Cubs have only scored 4 or more in 23 games out of 52 is pretty pathetic, so I guess there's always more bad this good, at least this season.

Comparison:
The Cardinals are 30-5 when scoring four or more runs this year, and thus 4-14 when scoring three or fewer.
Even more comparison
I wanted to see what a mediocre team's record looked like, so I picked the 26-28 Brewers.  They are 22-10 when scoring 4 or more, thus they are 4-18 when scoring 3 or less.

Counting those games was tough.  Is there a better way to do this that I don't know about?

Not that I know of...
... I had to count them too.

It's still relatively easy, since only about 1/3 of the season is gone. Try doing this in September! ;)

One more comparison
The Reds, pretty much middle in the road in terms of pitching (16th in MLB in ERA), are 25-5 when scoring 4 or more, thus 4-19 when scoring three or fewer.
Go Big Smooth!
I love that nickname.

Pujols is a nice guy. Maybe he will be nice and not hit any homeruns or anything for RBIs during the whole series.

I'm with ya, Al. They need to score some runs!

Cubs will take series.
I really think the Cubs will take this series. I think they always seem to know that it is on when it comes time to play the Cardinals. They won't like having lost the last series and will remember the joy of sweeping them at home in April.

If there's anyone the Cards can beat, it's the National League. If there's one team they can't master, it's the Cubs of the last few years.

Predicting Marshall goes at least 6 innings and gives up 3 or fewer runs tonight. And Glendon is going to shock us with a good outing on Saturday.

GO CUBS!!

I don't get it.
Why pick up Nevin if he's not going to play?
Splits?
What the Ponson splits for Womack and Nevin?

I'll be Nevin only plays against Leftys until Womack comes back to Earth.

where's Nevin?
n/t
Jazzman hurt his feelings
He hit a water cooler and broke his wrist
Um
Walker is hitting cleanup? I don't get it.
Well...
Ponson is a righty, so it makes sense to play Jones, who has hit righties well and has been hitting well lately.  Walker has hit Ponson well (7 for 19).  So has Cedeno (.750 - but only 4 at bats).  Womack is hitting .343 on the year because of his production lately (shouldn't we keep using him while he's hot?).  Don't want Nevin behind the plate until Barrett has been suspended.  Where would we play him tonight?  I don't think it's good to use him just because we have him.
This almost makes too much sense.
Let's hope it works.
Let's
Hey, it's wierd to see you around here at game time.    I'm usually only here during day games, and you're usually at those games.
So hey back atcha!
Dunno how long I'll hang here, but I'm here for a bit.

FWIW, Cardinals lineup:

Eckstein ss
Luna lf
Pujols 1b
Rolen 3b
Encarnacion rf
Taguchi cf
Molina c
Miles 2b
Ponson p

okay
kids have their pizza and their movie, I have my drink and my laptop.

Let's do this thing!

OK
I was just about to say how impressed I was with Womack's AB, and then he goes and does something stupid to make me hate him again.
Even stupider...
... it costs the Cubs a run, after Barrett's double.
It's funny
how many of these little things have added up to A LOT of losses for this team.
which
CAN be used as a reflection of Dusty Baker
What'd he do?
just watching Gameday
dont' get the game here in NC and haven't turned MLB radio on yet.  What happened on that failed stolen based attempt?
He just got thrown out.
<sigh>
my lord
what can we do right anymore
Well...
they do wear their uniforms the right way.  They don't wear them backwards or anything like that.
And they
did show up on time for the game too.
In body if not in spirit
or mind in Womak's case ( Ok I am the office and
not watching anyway)
Cedeno!
grrrrrr.
Pujols strikeout...
... Rich Hill, take notes.
Good job, Sean!
Womack's
arm is worse than I thought.
Barrett's is apparently better!
That is now...
... 11 caught stealing in 55 attempts against Barrett. Not very good.
exactly
more of a comment on Womack
or more accurately a cheap shot
Did I really see that?
Michael Barrett actually threw out a runner stealing?

Who are these guys?

Luna
looked like he was carrying a piano on his back.
Maybe
June is the anti-May
What is going on here
Am I listening to the right game, Pujols strikes out, Barrett throws out a runner...
Good News from Iowa
Ryu is pitching a no-hitter over Nashville 3-0 in the top of the third inning!
Yet another
of our standout AAAA pitchers.
yup
maybe we should keep looking to our AA stars
not so fast
I think it's too soon to label Ryu a AAAA pitcher.  He's still very young (only 22 or 23), he's only thrown THREE innings for the Cubs and this is actually his first season at AAA.

I think he's actually on or ahead of schedule.

I feel better about him than most of our prospects.

rock on,

You obviously
missed his standout major league debut.
Ryu
Thanks for the reality check of optimism! Come on guys, June IS the anti-May!
Gameday can suck it
Is anyone else getting a frozen Gameday?

Cripes.

Affirmative
Ramirez took a walk!!!!!
That was easy
Jones bounced into a double play.  No wonder Dusty doesn't want these guys taking walks.
Bases unclogged!
<sarcasm>

See how easy that is?

</sarcasm>

Anyone else's Gameday stuck?
yes
luna just reached in the first on mine
Forget gameday
I find that CBS Sportsline's Game Center is much more reliable.  Less bells and whistles, but perhaps that is why it works so well.
wow
we actually took 2 walks??? OMG the cubs with patience at the plate..thats just crazy
And didn't...
Marshall face the Marlins twice?
Marlins
He probably pitched against most of their team a few times in the minors last year.
Yes...
... he did face the Marlins twice.

He also did face Ricky Nolasco, who pitched against him May 22, last year.

In A ball.

yup
and he also faced Pittsburgh twice.  see here
Where's Ron?
Is he finally taking some time off?
Wednesday
they said on WGN-TV that he was sick.  Is the lefthanded bullpen coach subbing for him again?
"Lefthanded bullpen coach"...
... now that sounds like an important position!

;)

oops
typing while listening to something else.  LH BATTING PRACTICE PITCHER - man I was way off on that
I knew what you meant...
... but frankly, why shouldn't we have a lefthanded bullpen coach?
Marshall said in the paper he'd
throw early strikes and work quickly.  He's doing neither.
If I told the paper what my strategy was
for everyone to read, I wouldn't follow it either
Right
Because throwing strikes and working quickly really tells a lot.  maddux has been doing it for 20 years.
Marshall may have given up 3 hits...
... but so far, the results are pretty good in two innings. No complaints here.
It looks to me like
he sometimes doesn't want to throw the ball.  He's grinding it out tonight.  So far.
things getting better?
Did the Cubs just get someone out who was swinging on a first pitch!?

This is great. Just maybe the Cubs are doing some things right (throwing runners out, taking walks) and some other teams can do semi-bone-headed things like not taking any pitches.

Kid needs
to learn how to bunt.  What do the Cubs teach in the minor leagues?
Apparently
they taught him how to pitch pretty well
Do you work for the Cubs?
nope
just love em
Me too
but I'm not willing to overlook their glaring lack of fundamentals.  Laying down a bunt isn't that hard.
I was more reacting to
the consistent negativity in your comments than turning a blind eye to fundamentals.  the fundamentals have been pretty poor this year across the board.  Although our pitchers seem to be covering first this year.
Fair enough
Tough for me to be positive after these first two months.  I'm pretty down on these guys.  I had high hopes this year.
Also fair enough...
I shouldn't be so reactive.
Marshall.
man I was hoping for a walk there....oh well.
Just another thing
for him to pick up from Maddux.
The guy subbing
for Ron, I forget his name, actually sounds a lot like Ron, minus the Oh Jeez...

phat

Unbelievable
Marshall's screwing up that bunt ruined the inning.
luna
please!!! don't walk luna to make two on for albert....please...
yes!!
perfect outcome. cubbies actually want this game....come on....!
What's the record
for hitting into double plays?  The Cubs look like they're making a run at it.
Also,
Luna himself almost did it twice.  We're on our way to a combined record.
Joe Torre
grounded into 4 double plays on July 21, 1975.
Wow
8 outs in one game.  That's amazing.
The kid's
battling tonight.
marshall.
yeah, he's getting out of some good jams. I like it. just need some freaking offense now....how's that wrist Derrick!!?!??!
Ponson's got nothing
They just need to put it together.
Jones
now leads the team in home runs
Thank you Jaque
oh yeaaaaa
jones.
jacque homered!!! yes!!!

he's really getting it together finally.

Ugh
Watching Marshall try to bunt is pretty painful.
Looks like Marshall may get another shot
at the sacrifice
It was ugly
and not exactly a bunt but it got the job done.
Waidaminit.
A Cub runner tries to beat a throw and slides in safely past it?

Who ARE these guys?

and pierre with an RBI
it starts with an opportunity
That's the way to do it!!!!
Ronnie
Very nice slide
Get down!
Safe!
wtf??
yes! this is insane! sac moves the runner over, pierre drives in the run?? these guys are finally playing good ball!
This is good baseball.
It's like the beginning of the season.

phat

Like I said above
June is the anti-May  (?)
remains to be seen....
let's hope so....how about a reversal of the may record?? that would be 22-7!!

we can dream....

As the cliche goes
one game at a time.
If only.
n/t
I thought that as soon as I typed it. n/t
After 52 games
2005 Astros - 20-32
2006 Cubs - 20-32

We still have hope I think.

VERY intereting....
wow, if Lee has a breakout season and wood, prior and marshall all settle in, could we still make a run at the wildcard???

erm....wishful thinking I guess....

Don't forget
the return of the real Ramirez
Yikes! n/t
Not to be a wet blanket
but let's not forget the Cubs will probably be without Barrett for 10 games this month.  It'll be tough.
Let us hope...
... that it's only 7 or 8 games. We should find out sometime next week.

Expect the suspension to start immediately after the announcement.

Marshall
looks like he's settling in.
Barrett
3-3 tonight.  Alright!
Why in the world did Barrett stop??
with 2 outs
If he makes it to 3rd, base hit scores a run
If he holds up, base hit scores a run

Why risk getting thrown out

Agreed
but there was no risk.  Taguchi was giving it to him.  They weren't even gonna make the throw. And there are advantages: he could've scored on a wild pitch or passed ball or an error or an infield hit, etc.  Didn't matter though since Murton bounced out.
true - you're right
still, with 2 outs, you have to be pretty sure you're going to make it
Pat:
I know that if he has a spasm, it's called a 'luna-tick' but I don't know what luna means...
Great
Marshall is tipping his pitches.
Why do you say that??
On Comcast
they showed Edmonds say "fastball" right before Marshall threw one, and now he's called half the team over and is demonstrating whatever it is the Marshall is doing differently when a fastball is coming.

And now they've gotten two hits in a row.

that's no good
you'd think that if we know that, Dusty/Larry would know that
See?
and now they are teeing off on him.

Rats.

i just
checked the replay and i didnt see that
You didn't see what?
n/t
a shot of
edmonds doing that

i have dvr and i went back and looked

what
ab was it?
right before Pujols
I think.
They showed it a few times
Go back 15 minutes or so.

Edmonds was watching Marshall--said "fastball" right as Marshall wound up, then turned around and called Aaron Miles and and Hal McRae over. The next time they showed him, he was demonstrating whatever it is Marshall was doing in his wind up.

any
idea who was batting and what inning?
last Cardinals at bat
I think it was right before Pujols got the first hit.
you watching comcast
or FSN Midwest?
comcast
n/t
I meant KSU
I'm assuming he's getting FSN Midwest in KS (or on MLBTV since Cards are the home team)
yae
im getting the cards team through MLB xtra
Apparently...
... the Cardinals dugout is hiding this pretty well. Maybe we need to get the Comcast feed to the Cub dugout.

Or, get them a laptop so they can read BCB there!

If only...
hahaha.  BCB could be the Cubbies' secret weapon
yeah
?
Is it me
or doe Taguchi kill the Cubs?
.231 lifetime v. Cubs current pitching staff
see here
I guess it's me
He seems to come up with a lot of big hits though.
but of course
that's not necessarily versus the Cubs
Right
They just said Taguchi has really good numbers with RISP so I'm not imagining things.
Taguchi
Had a great at bat there:  Nice under control swing taking the outside pitch and dumping it into RF runner scores opportunity for more with 2 outs and 2 on (thankfully opp. squandered.

Maybe the fundamental Cubs will pick up on this!!!

Ronny's playing some ball!!
Marshall's
gotta lay this one down!!  Also, he's thrown a lot of pitches, maybe Dusty should pinch hit?
Marshall
Help yourself out.
TERRIBLE!!!!!!
This kid needs to learn how to bunt!!!
Yes
Yes he does.
u have to remember
marshalls main job is to survive i doubt he is getting alot of bp right now  Now this inning lets see if he is tipping--- if they tee off again i will be alot more suspicious
agreed on the pinch hit
the bottom of the orders coming up we just had a day off but maybe Dusty's thinking ride my good starter while I can #$@$$ Rusch is pitchin tomorrow.
haven't seen the bunt and run in awhile
n/t
Let's cash this one in!!
Yes!
This is how it should be done!
Tony!
Takes first pitch.
jebus
cedeno gets picked off by pujols....

ya i know

lmao
help me, jeebus!
Rats!
What the hell?
That was supposed to be a squeeze
But he didn't look to see if it was actually a pitch.
Terrible
baserunning by Cedeno.
Just tuning in -
What happened with Cedeno??
So now Dusty goes to the pen???
Why didn't they pinch hit in the top of the inning??  Dusty sucks.
OMGFHARN
thats Oh my God Fire his A$$ right now
That's Dusty
just being Dusty.
The MLB.TV
guys can't stop talking about how stupid it was for Dusty not to PH for Marshall.
Better walk albert...
Duh
Easiest IBB ever. Actually I'm surprised Duhsty didn't pitch to him.
bases loaded
i cant watch
Whee
We lose.
didn't see that coming....lol
Poor Marshall...
Way to go bobby
that was money well spent.
Lets not overreact now
Howry has been great for the Cubs all season.  All relievers have bad outings.
Haha
The Cardinals announcers getting on Dusty for his stupid managing.
11 hits
2 runs
(so far)

Sean Marshall deserved better from the offense and bullpen.

eghhh
ughhh, depressing double....man, marshall really deserved this one. but it's still only a one run game.
Marshall doesn't deserve this one
If he could lay down a bunt the Cubs would have at least two more runs.  He deserves what he gets.
You're kidding, right?
Marshall should never have even been out there in the seventh.  Its all on Dusty.
I agree with that
except Marshall blew a bunt earlier in the game that cost them runs.
I agree...
they just don't give him runs.  They gave him run support in April, but now they don't give him much.
nice play Aram
at least you contribute something to this team
Was that
a ground ball AND a hit from Ramirez??  Wow
Marshall.
of course marshall deserved this one. He gave up one run in 6 innings! he also pitched just right to albert. the rest is on Dusty and Howry. Let's hope for a rally and not another dumb one run loss.
How come...
no one has wished Neifi happy birthday? :)

Happy 33rd Neifi, and I hope you leave soon.

Best. Birthday Wish. Ever.
n/t
come on....
matty murt! I know you want this one! BIG HIT!!
Woohoo!
Don't blow this!

Come on Orange guy!

mabry.
or....Mabry? come on, this guy is from st. louis....he better stick it to his old hometown....if this is another bonehead dusty ph situation, I'll be pretty angry....
for gods sake
we dont pinch hit or sac bunt in the 7th

and then we pinch hit our most patient hitter with mabry- EVEN if it pays off its retarded managing

HOW
does this makes any sense!?
It doesn't
But that's our Dusty!
walked him....
RONNY! RONNY! RONNY!
and if mabry
is on board why not pinch run with bynum to end the DP?!?
RARRRR
GOD!
FUC*K
thats it
im done with dusty baker

he has mismanged this game so badly

injuries be damned dusty CANNOT manage a major league game

How do you think Phil Nevin feels?
He had his big chance to try out excuses for new Busch Stadium, but Ronny blew it for him.
Can I get a.....
.....hit?  Or at least a sac fly--?
No!
you may not! Where do you think we are--on the south side?

Now sit down.

I hate dusty
I'm pretty sure I get dumber watching gameday in a game dusty manages.
Dusty...
is stuck on STUPID!!
Oh My God n/t
Thru 8 innings
13 hits + 3 walks + 1 error = 2 runs
mistakes
  1. Letting Marshall bat from himself only to pull him
  2. Not sac bunting with womack with runners at 1st and 3rd
  3. pulling murton for maby
  4. not pulling mabry as for a PR
hell you even could have pinch ran bynum for Ramirez and put neifi in-- were 20-31 for gods sake take a shot at tying the game
Number 3...
pisses me off the most!
ugh
wow, I just don't know what to say. a double play. worst play for this situation. man!
That sucks.
He had a chance to make up for getting picked off, and he didn't do anything.
Mabry
DOESNT EVEN PLAY LF-- so why is his slow ass on the bases?

you could have stole 2nd with pierre in the top of the 7th, you could have bunted with womack, cedeno and pierre 3 of our fastest guys

its just too much for words

My guess is that
those chewing sticks are slowly but surely poisoning Dustbin's brain.
its just too much
i dont care if his players like him he makes poor lineups, plays washed up vets and CANNOT make a single strategic move that helps us

if they extend him....

You are...
on fire!  Let it all out!
BTW, I'm agreeing with all of you points.
oops..
I meant your points.
Are we
coming close to Neifi time? Or will it be meaningless with Williamson on the mound. He hasn't pitched for 10 days. Good choice Dusty.
The top of the ninth
will be all PHs.

Neifi.

Bynum.

And Ryan Theri...oh wait.

Blanco.

Of course it will be Neifi time!
It's his birthday, remember?
A Birthday presnt
for Neifi would be a trip around the world for 2 leaving right after the game. And he has to take Dusty with him.
oh and
murton leads our team with 4 game winning hits

but i guess we needed a left handed veteran

Novoa?
Awesome! We've got this game locked up for sure.
Seriously, at this point
why even bother wasting the pen?
Novoa got the out
He gets a cookie.
at the very least
the cardnials announcers are bashing dusty's moves

thank god someone states the obvious

They...
must be having a field day.
and why the hell
are we still placing jacque and a-ram 5-6th

with a righty on Jacque should bat 4th or 5th

FOR THE LAST effing time

  1. Pierre
  2. Walker/ Murton
  3. Ramirez/ Barret
  4. Jacque
  5. Ramirez/Barret
  6. Murton/ Walker
  7. Nevin
  8. Cedeno
  9. Pitcher
and here
is the ONLY move i like

Phil Nevin time baby

Might as well.
n/t
Nevin walks
$200 fine!
man
he is a huge dude
More or less an intentional walk to Nevin.
More or less an intentional walk to Nevin.
Heeeeere's Neifi.
PRing.
aaaand they're loaded
Again.
Walk to Barrett definitely wasn't intentional.
Wow.
What a break.
rolen
is buckner in drag
Man!
My audio dropped just as this all started.

I missed most of that!

Now it's tied!

I heard that!

phat

um
was that an error?
Rolen=Zombie Buckner
Yes.
Come on Jacques!
Rolen let a potential double play ball get through
his legs, two runs in, chance to go ahead.
I wonder if
Dusty will send out Dempster in the bottom of the ninth.
It figures
JJ would now choke.

Ah well, it's not over.

yea
I hate it when a guy only goes 3 for 5...give me a break
Point taken...
gotta be dempster IMO
if we get to ten+ the Aardsma can pitch
wish the Duster would prove me wrong more often
Aardsma's Gameday pic
Is hilarious.
no kidding
I was just showing it to my wife and we were laughing
Pitching to Pujols
Man, I'd think about walking him even with no one on base.
And he K's Pujols!
Haha
Sweet!
But he got him
And someday, when Pujols owns every hitting record in baseball, Aardsma will have a story to tell his kids.
Sweet
Aardsma blows Pujols away on a 99 mph fastball.
Aardsma strikes out the mighty Pujols.
Good Job Aardsma!
99 MPH! Wow.
Aaarghsma!
Nice play Ronny!
Extra Innings
I like June.
Aardsma keeps this up and he may be the new closer
Yes!
Barehanded play!

phat

Dempste better be in the game in the
bottom of the tenth or I'm going to pop a vein.
102
on the comcast gun, this kid throws smoke.
6-year old phenom Brad Thompson pitching
Can't get it past Mayberry!
This looks good
LaRussa used his pitchers for matchups. As per Ron Santo's replacement.
Who's name
I can't seem to remember.
Bunting with a .300 hitter
in the tenth inning...
Wait a second
We have a .300 hitter???!
HA!!
Get on base
Freddie.

I don't care how.

Well
That wasn't a great way, but he's faster than Mabry.  For what that's worth.
Well
I would of preferred him doing it without getting Mabry out, but I digress.
I should just
keep mouth big mouth shut.
after the game
i would be honored if some of u guys would read this http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/story/2006/6/2/233640/2796

and let me know what you guys think

btw David AAARDDSSSMAA is looking like the real steal in that hawkins trade-- AMAZING heat

I think those are all good and valid points.
Send Bynum to steal second base!
Good idea I think, even if it didn't work
Man, Bynum is fast
If he knew how to hit then he would be somewhat useful.
he still looked like
he made it
That's what it looked like to me too
Damnit Freddy....
Couldn't beat the throw.  To the bottom of the 10th...
Freddie Bynum Is A Lot of Things....
....but one thing he was NOT was out on that play. He got his hand around Eckstein's leg.
Dempster?
Aardsma?
Dempster I think
Didn't Bynum bat in Aardsma's spot?
Aardsma's still in?
OK Pat's talking this up.
I want
an explanation!

But it can wait until after we win this thing.

Ooops
Not talking this up.

I should have said "explaining the defensive changes." I was typing in a hurry.

I didn't actually
catch it all.
Bynum batted for Novoa in the 9th and stayed in LF
Great use of the bench by dusty today
We have Blanco left to bat and Eyre and Dempster as the pitchers
Cards don't have
a lot of pitchers left.
I Hope You're Serious
...because Dusty has done pretty well this game.
BeerCub, what game have you been watching?
ok
 u go here http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/story/2006/6/2/233640/2796

and tell me how he has had a good game

please seperate the fact we are tied with how dusty has managed

one thing
i will give the cards annoucners is that they dont BS they said bynum was safe to them
Taguchi grounds out
After milking Aardsma for 8 pitches.

2 Down, 1 to go before we get another chance!

Molina singles
Miles Singles
Molina to Second.

Dusty, do something!

He's doing something.
EYRE!?!?!?
We want Dempster!
Well...
He's doing something.

Whether or not that's the right something remains to be seen.

Molina 3 hits
Is pretty much the equivalent of Blanco getting 2 or 3 hits in a game.
Larry Bigby?
the incredible hulk?
n/t
Wow
Just get this one more out.

I think that might be all it takes.

Eyre coming in
No problem with that, but Dusty's reluctance to use his close when the game is tied in late/extra innings is maddening.
He probably will
if the Cubs get a lead.
I think he's going to need
Dempster in the 11th.
no out recorded
:( :( :( :( :(
Ugh
Eckstein usually comes through here.
Bases loaded
Our Father, who art at Wrigley, blessed be thy game.
If Ramirez didn't stop that
Would the game be over?
Ickstein
Doesn't come through in the clutch!!!!
ECKSTEIN LINES OUT
yesssssssssssssssss!

Crack me an old style, someone!

I'm on it
n/t
I'm on my way for that as WELL
OLD STYLE
Yes!
Sweet!
im at work and when
I watch they suck and when I don't they get people out so for your sake and Mine I'm not going to watch anymore!!!! LETS GET SOME RUNS!!!!
WHEW!
We need at least one run with Pujols/Rolen coming up in the bottom half.
Cardinal announcers said that Walker was slow
to cover first, made it sound like a good play would have had Bigbie out.

Sounds like Ramirez had two good plays.

Pierre, Perez, Barret
Get 'er done!
One down
Two more outs to play with.
No Cardinal relievers left?
Dempster's the only one left for the Cubs.
Stay in there Barrett
GG
Pujols and Rolen due up, probably not gonna happen.
2/3/4 coming up to bat
Which brings me to notice something, why is Pujols not in cleanup?
Do we still see Eyre?
How do I look up splits?
Well,
there's my answer.
Luna
grounds out.  Here comes the peehole.
Als stats
Funny how today he put up the records for each team when scoring over or under 4 runs and now they are in extras at 4 each.
Yes
you're right
Eyre
Gets Pujols swinging!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes
OMGWTFBBQLOL
Pujols K's 3 times in a game? Gotta get Rolen and we get another chance!
Pujols
Today was only his second multi K game of the season and his first with 3 Ks.
That is amazing.
Last time Pujols K'd 3 times in one game:
May 12 2005 vs LAD
Remember that time
When we swept the Cards?  Yeah, that was this season.  Come on Cubbies!

Rolen grounds out.  We have another birth!

WOO EYRE+AARDSMA
Awesome work tonight.
Eyre
Pitched a great inning.
Yes,
and Aardsma
Hypothetical Question
Say this game goes a bunch more innings, do you put in Rusch and let Wood pitch on his normal rest tommorow?
I'll answer later.
But as of right now, I'm under the impression Walker is gonna homer and we will win it by throwing 9 straight strikes afterwards.
Z gonna pinch hit?
Heh!
Z! Z! Z!
n/t
for cubs fans
Since no images are allowed (you're no fun), thought I'd send you a link to Voodoo Albert.
That's beautiful.
this might of been discussed already
but why is our pitcher occupying the 6 spot?
Double Switches
Is there any other way to manage a game.
Three up, Three down.
Pray for 13.
This game can only end
With a Greg Maddux pinch-hit HR.
Inside-the-park HR?
Aaaaaargh
Bob can't see anything wrong with how Dusty managed tonight. HE. SAID. THAT.

Who still wants him to manage?

Bob or Dusty?
I don't want either.
Well, both
but who still wants Bob to manage if he can't see any problems w/the way Dusty handled the evening??

*sticks fork in eye

hmm?
Bob the broadcaster or the Bob from the Movie "What about bob"
neither
Your choices are:

Bob Dylan
Bob the Builder
Bob Dole
Who put the Bob in the Bob-shoo-bop-shoo-bop?

There's a reason
he isn't managing anymore.
I'm running out...
of saltines.  I eat them a lot during close games.
Eyre is
hanging in there.
Tomorrow...
is going to be scary.  Glendon doesn't go very deep into the game.
Shouldn't be a big deal
Williamson, Ohman, and Novoa combined for 11 pitches.
Molina singles
Encarnacion to third.

Keep the faith.

Come on, this dude was hitting .181
4-6
We're loading the bases
Gonna take our chances with a Pinch Hitter to be named later
Spiezo
Only one left but I don't think STL has anybody left in the pen.
Walk him for the pitcher.
Wow.

If I have any finger nails left after this game...

Wow!
Hancock is going to the box!
stop throwing balls
please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The midget coming up
WOO
God help him if he walked the relief pitcher with the bases loaded.
Hancock strikes out
And Eckstein steps up...
This pest
lined out to Aram the last time they had bases loaded.
Bring in Demp
Coaching vist
We might get our wish.
He's warming up
Here he comes
We need this game pretty f'n badly.
They told the pitcher not to swing.
very smart
eyre could walk him plus u let eckstein try and win the game

good managing...hmmmm

But,
and I have complained about Dusty

They can bring Dempster in for Eckstein, which is what happened.

Dempster is in.
The Cards got nobody but starters, right?
Yep
Now the Cubs do too.
Sox/Texas
In their game today a texas batter swung at a pitch that hit him and the ball rolled into play for a ground out.
Dusty had better pray
to the god of skinny punks that Dempster doesn't have to go more than 1 1/3.
ESPN
just showed a cardinal dogpile as a preview of the game talk after the commercial break.  not a single cub uniform

little biased?

can you blame them?
Ahhh!
This is scary.  Come on, Dempster.  Do it for little Brady.
eckstein
is hitting almost .500 vs dempster

ball one

strike
one
strike
two
out of the inning
good job
Cubs still got Dempster for
one more half inning.

This could be good.

Who's up for the Cubs?

Mabry, Cedeno, Bynum
At
least that's not horrible.
maddux, rusch
would be my thoughts

!Neifi!

YEAH BABY
COME ON SOMEBODY IN A CUB UNIFORM CROSS HOME PLATE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!
OUTS RECORDED
How beautiful it is....

Lucky 13!!!!!!!!!

Ronny,
make up for that bad steal attempt.
Bynum
Time to buy yourself another month on the roster
My audio dropped agan!
What's happening?
We choked.
To the bottom...
We are doing nothing against Hancock
We aren't going to keep STL scoreless forever and Pujols is up again in the bottom.
so IF
we survive why not throw Glendon out there--
call up hill or willams for tommorows game

not like we will see a drop off in talent.

Wood
Is on his normal rest for tommorow.
Baseball Tonight
They suggested that AAAAAArdsma is our closer of the future.
why not
if he can manage that fastball then he is a great choice
Agreed
Time for
Dempster to K Pujols
Cedeno #2 webgem
whee!
Very nice play indeed
While i'm sad I have to watch ESPN instead of the game, i'm happy it's not on WGN with our horrible record this year with 'em...
Whee is right
Now to open another Old Style
I agree with the Rusch comments upthread
Put him in tonight, if need be.
Rusch
Is in the bullpen
Come on!
One more!
This is the game that never ends,
yes it goes on and on my friend. Some people started playing it, not knowing what it was, and they'll continue playing it forever just because...
Maybe
If it goes on long enough we can activate DLee and he can pinch-hit?
yeah the Don of Glen
is our only viable option
He shouldn't really be a starter anyway
Right?
Geez
33 hits, 27 LOB in this game.
Cubs get another chance
And then on to the 14th inning stretch!!!
juan
peezy!
Yes!!
Way to go Pierre
Pierre 2B!!!!
This run has to score, no excuse.
How often
does tomorrow's starter go to the bullpen?
Runner in scoring position!
And it's Pierre

I believe.

Come on Neifi
Yes!
okie dokie
juan at third one out
I'll take it.
Send him home, Mike!  Send him home!
Neifi..
gets to do his favorite thing: bunt!
it will
be on walker to hit him in
Will they walk the bases loaded?
TLR?
Mikey
gets on base for free.  Come on Todd!!!
Aram
is on deck right?
SCORE
BOOM
Yes!
The Cardinal announcer
Hrabosky, I think, just said that Yadier Molina "Went down in the crotch."

Heh, heh, heh.

Rusch as a...Closer?
I just shed a solitary tear.
He's not a starter.
WOOHOO
Insurance would be nice.
Yes! Yeehah! Cowabunga!
Everyone, this round is on me!!!

Anyone caught drinking Anheiser-Busch products will be stoned.

intresting move
dempster has thrown 17

what do u guys think?

Comeon
Dempster.
i think
its the right move- however- if he struggles and lets a few guys on base then pull him and let Don Glendon have his shot
Dempster for the WIN
n/t
Only 3 more outs
That's all it takes
Ok close this mf'er OUT
These guys are gonna be tired tomorrow (er, today).
I believe.
I don't care if i've said it 20x already.
Come on, Ryan!
if we would have had
any other PH but Hank White then i say let Rusch close it but GO CUBS

LETS DO IT

So during the 14th inning stretch
Do we get to sing again??

Is this the first multi-stretch game in New Busch History???

one down
two more baby!
1 pitch, 1 out
Taguchi auditioning for a starting OF spot on the Cubs at the best time!
That's
one
Law of averages
Says Molina doesn't get a hit.
I  laws!
yep!
MABRY
 HOLY SHIT
ONE MORE OUT!!!!
Come on boys, this ends RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW!
Nice belly flop, Mabry :)
Nice!
I think...
BCB reader BCurt was going to this game.  He's so lucky.
Can't be quick
Wouldn't be a Dempster inning with the game on the line without some sweat.
chewing nails
one more strike
please god
Bennet
shows up.

Wow, what a great game.

Come on Come on Come on
GAME
CUBS WIN!
CUBS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111
!!!!11111111111111111
CHC 5 STL 4 F/14
How Beautiful!!!!

So this is what winning 3/4 feels like....it's been so long!!!

yes!!!
YES!!
Walker is the hero on an 0-7 night
Hey hey!

Gotta love a win over the Cardinals!
Old style for everybody
They're singing
Go Cubs Go....
Go Cubs Go....

Hey Chicago, Whaddya Say????

Yes!!!!
Sweet.

What a great game!!!

just think of all those sad tired
bird fans filing out of Busch now...

hee...hee...hee...hee!

We topped 500 comments today
good game everyone
Cubs bullpen
Looked good tonight.

And they had some offense.

They win a one run game.

Take THAT, All You Doubters and Cynics
I'm tired.
Hopefully I will wake up in time for tomorrow's game.
There is nothing better then reading this thing...
NOTHING!!! I LOVE THE CUBS
doubters and cynics....
need to realize that the cubs always show up against the cardinals. it's a fact. they will take this series but then have to decide whether they want to show up the rest of the season....

GO CUBS I AM SO HAPPPY THEY WON TONIGHT!!!?!?!!a1 YES!!!!

This is a big win
I should go to the local batting cage more often.

Hell, I even made contact, more than I ever did in little leacgue.

who knows?
maybe tomorrow, glendon will pitch the game of his life. it feels like the worst of the season is over, even though they're entering the toughest part of the schedule. a win like tonight helps restore a little optimism.
