Bleed Cubbie Blue

What You May Not Have Seen Last Night, and Open Thread: Cubs vs. Astros, Tuesday, 7/4, 1:05 CT

Since there's a very short turnaround again between last night's 7-2 Cub loss to the Astros, and today's holiday day game, I thought I'd combine the game summary with today's open thread -- primarily because there isn't, again, a whole lot to say about the loss.

It was typical, in other words -- too many walks (seven by Carlos Marmol), and there's no way you're going to avoid giving up runs that way; and too many Cub runners left stranded (seven), including, yet again, runners left in scoring position in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings.

Here's what you didn't see if you didn't see the game on TV, or weren't there:

Ronny Cedeno absolutely, positively dragged his shoe across the back edge of second base in the fifth inning. The Yahoo AP recap says that "replays showed that Cedeno's foot missed the bag by several inches", but I'm not sure which replay that writer was watching -- the replays I saw showed that Cedeno definitely got the base. Now, if this play is made, the inning is over and the score is still tied; butterfly effect most likely means that Lance Berkman never comes up with two runners on in the sixth, hitting the HR that put the game out of reach.

And that leads me to the other thing you didn't see if you didn't see the game on TV, and maybe you missed it even if you did; after the Berkman HR, CSN, for some inexplicable reason, showed a closeup replay of Will Ohman in which even someone like me, who can't read lips at all, could tell the unprintable words that Ohman was saying after throwing that pitch.

Those are likely the words that all of us would like to use to describe this unprintable season. Other blogs use those words all the time. I choose not to, even though I'm THINKING them.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Mark Prior
 M. Prior
Cubs
vs. Andy Pettitte
 A. Pettitte
Astros
0-3 W-L 6-9
9.00 ERA 5.58
15 SO 81
6 BB 38
5 HR 18
vs. Hou -- vs. Cubs
And so, onward we go on this holiday; Prior has not thrown well against the Astros in his career (4-4 with a 4.35 ERA in 12 starts), although he has handled the hitters on the current club pretty well.

Meanwhile, Pettitte had not defeated the Cubs at all in six previous career starts until three weeks ago at Wrigley Field. In Pettitte's last nine starts, he has allowed five, seven, three, seven, two, one, four, six and five runs respectively.

Guess which one of those nine was the one against the Cubs? I'll bet you don't even have to look it up.

It's a holiday. Enjoy. For nostalgia's sake, check out this memorable Cub 4th of July game from 1991, when they blew an 8-2 lead against the Pirates, but won when Mark Grace led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a HR, his second of the game and sixth of the '91 season (he hit only eight all that year). Also worth mentioning from that game: Barry Bonds homered off Greg Maddux, and the appearance of Laddie Renfroe, a 29-year-old non-prospect who pitched in only four games in his major league career.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

happy fourth everyone!
n/t
Even more...
from that 1991 game.  This is something you don't see every day:

On a bunt Varsho was credited with a single when a runner was hit by the batted ball [Bonds out at second (second)];

That must have been some bunt.

Cedeno's DP ball
That's funny. The replay I saw on Fox Southwest, looking from 3rd base towards RF, pretty clearly showed his foot passed about 6" behind the 2B bag. I saw another shot from the 1B stands, looking towards LF, that looked like he got the bag as he swept his foot past the bag. But that 3B shot removed all doubt. He missed it.
from right field
it looked like he just touched the back of the bag with the tip of his foot as he was making the throw. Haven't seen any of the replays, but as soon as I saw that from my seat, I knew there was no DP, even if he had touched the base, as the ump was in the exact wrong position to see that.
Agreed, Sorry Al, But He Missed The Base
I saw the replay several times on the Houston feed. From the 3rd base angle, you can clearly see he let go of the ball before his foot touched the base. There's no question. Unfortunately for the Cubs it was the correct call.
In Other Words, He Missed While He Had The Ball
It's still a crap call
99.9% of the time the SS/2B gets the "neighborhood" call. I don't see why this ump was busting Cedeno's chops over a couple of inches.
Well....
....did you see it? He really wasn't "in the neighborhood" with this one. His foot was parallel with the base, and it looked like he was about two widths worth of his foot away.
Exactly.
It wasn't even a neighborhood call.  He wasn't even close to the bag at 2nd base.  He was at least a shoe length away from the bag.  You'll never get that call from an umpire.  Unfortunately what looked like a really good play as it happened was a really, really bad one, but not one that was surprising at all considering how bad this team is.
And To That...
...crap season aside, like it or not, it's a baseball axiom that you've more or less got to "earn" those "neighborhood" calls as you go along anyway. Even if this was a good year, with Cedeno being new, he still likely wouldn't get that call. MAYBE Furcal does, or Eckstein (having been a winning World Series SS) or the like, but probably not Cedeno, especially as far away as he was from the bag when he released the ball.
Eckstein
who did Eckstein win the WS with?

Nice holiday banner, Al.

Angels, 2002
Clearly missed the bag
Like everyone who had the Astros feed, the angle from 3rd base clearly showed he missed the bag.

The art in that play or the "phantom" DP is to drag your foot across instead of stepping on the bag like Cedeno did. Or the ump will give you the out if you touch the bag and then catch the ball, but you have to atleast touch the bag, which he clearly didn't.

He needs to drag his foot across the bag (or vicinity)and am really surprised he hasn't figured that out by now.

Yep, Al, sorry but Cedeno
did indeed miss the base. It wasn't terribly far from the bag, but at least while the ball was in his hand, his foot never dragged over the bag. The replay that had the camera perpendicular to the line of the bag and the foot showed this quite clearly.

I think it could have been a neighborhood call, but it was borderline. Often, if the player misses the bag to one side he'll get the call, but since Cedeno was behind the base, I suppose the umpire wasn't in a mood to be lenient.

But Cedeno very clearly missed the bag.

OK, OK...
... it sure looked like he got it on the replays I saw. But I didn't see the FSN Houston angles.

It is true that many ML SS get the "neighborhood" call, and yes, they usually have to be veterans to 'earn' it.

That's too bad too, because I've seen many DP's on which the infielder was MUCH farther away than Cedeno was last night.

Re
On the Cubs radio broadcast, Pat was adamant that Cedeno missed the bag.

And then during the 7/4 pregame, Ron also commented on how he agreed that, after watching the replays, Cedeno missed the bag, but that generally, the "neighborhood" call gets made.

Personally, I'm against the "neighborhood" call.  It's rewriting the rules.  If the middle infielder doesn't touch the bag with the ball, it's not an out.  Period.  And the replays show that the ump got it right.

Happy 4th of July!
I don't know what happened yesterday.  I listened to the game for like 3 seconds and turned it off when Pat said it was 7-2 because I wanted to sleep.

I still wanted to watch the Cubs this weekend, so I did.  I had time to watch from Jacque's homer forward on Saturday. Wow. I'm still kind of in a denial mode even though I know the Cubs are horribly bad.  Sometimes I just can't believe it.  I checked my phone for Sunday's game, and I was thrilled to see that Z had won and hit another homerun(a little too many runs given up though).

Maybe Prior will have an actual good start.

"Bag."
I'm looking forward to seeing how many times that word is used in this discussion (20 so far, including the one in this subject line).
Happy Independence Day
where we have the freedom to discuss/get angry/and mull over another Cub loss, It is a great country. Hey Mark, give us a good 7 today
Cubs Lineup
J. Pierre cf
N. Perez 2b
D. Lee 1b
A. Ramirez 3b
M. Barrett c
P. Nevin rf
M. Murton lf
R. Cedeno ss
M. Prior p

Thats a whole lot of righties except for pierre

Hey hey Dusty..
...Finally starting Murton against a lefty.
I'm wearing my
#22 shirt today so maybe it will bring Mark good luck. We shall see.

Happy 4th!!!!

Not that it matters...
But am I the only one that is tired of Dusty somehow thinking that Neifi could or should be batting second in ANY lineup? He should be batting 8th and Cedeno should be hitting second when Nay-Fay starts, IMO.
Shockingly...
Neifi's stats are quite good in the 2nd hole this year:

13 G 47 AB .367 OBP .447 SLG

Maybe that's why
I'll never be hired as a manager. I need to fact check next time.
yabbut
psychologically, when I see that Neifi is in the 2-hole, I know that the entire game will be an uphill battle and that we immediately have less of a chance to win.
Crawford Boxes.
The replays of Lance Berkman's homeruns pretty well pissed me off. Those were both fly ball outs in Wrigley Field and in almost every other ballpark in the US, Japan, Korea and the Dominican Republic. Heck, the way that the game has changed, those would have been SHALLOW fly balls to left in old West Side Park.

please rough up the stupid Astros....PLEASE!

way to take that walk Murton!
PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE don't blow this 1st & 2nd 1 out situation!
Hee hee
I have this feeling that Pettitte will find a groove after these first two innings where he's had trouble and the Astros will start hitting Prior.
THERE'S A BRIGHT IDEA!
Let's just swing at every pitch in the dirt! That will help our struggling offense!

Buffoons.

2 Walks, 2 LOB.....
anyone here?
Pierre
Getting hot at the right time. Hopefully somebody will want him.
WOw
Pierre is on fire, if he could swing liek this all year i wouldnt mind keeping him here
Pierres
Average up to .270 now
woo!!
DLee giving us the lead. This is how the lineup is supposed to work: Pierre gets on and into scoring position (by sacrifice or steal) and then DLee hits him home. I like this.

KEEP IT UP!

I'll take it.
As long as we get some solid pitching from Mark.
Nice play!!
did you hear....
Len and Bob say that the official scoring on that play was 1-2-3? That's cool and pretty rare I'm sure.
Yes I did hear that.
Dammit Mark!!
Crap!!!
I get scared
whenever I see Prior throwing stuff in the dugout. With his luck, something will bounce up and hit him right in the elbow.
What happened???
n/t.
No kidding.
It's very sad
to watch Prior here. He looks like he's got nothing. And it doesn't look like it's from a lack of innings. He looks washed up, incredibly, despite being only 26. I guess the only upside is that he is not under long-term contract.
I disagree.....he's looked good today
can't win ballgames when your O can drive in any runs.
I agree
me too....
I think his stuff has looked great. this is just the most miserable and anemic offense. it's atrocious.
I would love to see
Mary J. Blige.
I'll be super happy if Prior gets the ND
He doesn't deserve to lose this game.
I agree again.
I've got some great pictures of Mark pitching in his rehab at Iowa a couple of years ago.
Come on Cubs,
score this time...PLEASE!!!!!!!!
That foul ball was...
right where Uribe made that great catch in last year's world series...you know, the one the White Sox won.
And we should care
about this because?????
Brilliant!
It's the Keystone Cops out there.
Can Barrett block anything in the dirt?????
he's the worst defensive catcher in baseball......at least we have Novoa warming up :).
I thought
Prior always had Henry catching for him.
terrible
play. I can't believe that. two runs on one passed ball....echoes of neifi's two errors in one play....
Garner
Now here's a MGR with huevos grande! Pulling a pitcher chucking it up there pretty well in the bottom of the 6th with the bases loaded for a .230 hitter... especially trusting a one-run lead with the bullpen woes he's had.
every day I think I have seen it all. . .
then I watch another game, and this team continues to suprise me in how they continue to come up with creative ways to lose.  Oh well, they could still come back I suppose.  It is remarkable, however.
ok
Somebody please explain to me what the heck happened...

P. Wilson scored, M. Ensberg to third, A. Everett to second on wild pitch, M. Ensberg scored, A. Everett to third on M. Prior's fielding error

????

basically here's what happened
Prior threw a breaking ball in the dirt, Barrett couldn't block it (as if he could block anything) and Wilson scored from third, Barrett threw the ball back to Prior, he bobbled it (no one was covering home) and Ensberg scored.
it was
a wild pitch, so the first guy scored, then barrett's throw got away from prior so the next guy scored.

miserable, miserable play....

bags jammed...
wild pitch!!!! now an error!!! BaaaaaHaaaawwwww!!!!!! No matter what the Sox do this year the Cubs will always the more entertaining team to watch... lose. I love the way they lose. I'd rather watch the Cubs lose than watch the Sox win. Until the playoffs of course.

"Thank you Steve Bartman"

Heeeeees back!
I'm kind of new in here,
is he a troll?
I believe he
is a White sox fan, which as you know is MUCH worse.
troll???
ever know a White Sox fan that wasn't?
TUNA NOODLE CASSEROLE
 1 can tuna (7 1/2 oz)
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 small can green peas
3 cups noodles, cooked
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk

Flake tuna in casserole dish. Add soup to tuna. Add noodles, salt, and peas. Stir all together.
Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees.

Hopefully we can make some a little more substantial if this all continues.

Surely there is someone in
Chicago who can eat a lot of hotdogs
http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/news/story?id=2509226
HUH????
Did they fire Baker?

Do my eyes deceive me or is Todd Walker actually pinch hitting for Neifi Perez?

That said...
in hindsight, I rather he would have had Neifi bunt Pierre over (or let him steal) leading into Lee-Ramirez-Barrett.
I'm sure there lot's of guys...
who can devour way more "hot dogs" than that just a little east of your ballpark. Nyuk nyuk.
and you know this
from personal experience, yes?
Yeah , okay...
"FunBobby". With a name like that, that's what you come back with? Don't blow anything off during the fourth "FunBobby"
No Hr's Today?
Isn't this unusual?
Hmmmm,
I thought the game was still going.
'Stros fan here in peace...
Considering how deep the park gets in a hurry, it's really not.

At least most years. But no, it's all that unusual for a game to go by at MMP w/o either side hitting one out.

I should also note, btw, that HRs aren't as much..
of a frequent occurance w/ the roof closed. A LOT of those homers (on both sides) were because the roof was opened.
yabbut....
315 down the left field line. 315!
Sure, but it's actually easier for a hitter...
to get it out in RF. Like 326 down the line w/ only a 5 ft fence.

Like I was saying, it seems to run in cycles depending on what the pitching and hitting is doing. We do have periods of time where either guys are hitting it to the middle part of the park and no one's getting it out. It's rare that an opposing player hits out to the deepest parts and I don't know why.

There's your HR...
I still can't believe it was Blanco that hit it, though, lol!
this game
is so !@#$% frustrating. I can't stand this. We are doing everything wrong and they are doing everything right.

I just want to beat the !@#$% Astros for once!

Hey tool
I mean troll, shouldn't you be watching the Orioles beat the Sox?
aquafina
I'm so !@#$% sick of that stupid aquafina commercial, as well as the one for the car care product.

I think all in all I just need to stop watching the Cubs for a while.

but for some reason I can't keep myself from doing it.

Lemme see...
24 over, 22 under... 24 over, 22 under...24 over, 22 under. I'll take the 24 over. Oh, the sox are up 4-0, but that hasn't meant much as of late, They're pitching has looked like Wood and Prior are wearing Sox uni's.
Sirloin Steak With Garlic Butter
1/2 C. butter

2 t. garlic powder

4 cloves garlic, minced

4 1/2 inch thick sirloin steaks

coarsely ground salt and pepper to taste

Preheat grill for high heat. In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium low heat with garlic powder and minced garlic. Set aside.

Sprinkle both sides of each steak with salt and pepper. Lightly oil grate, and place meat on grill. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes per side. When done, transfer to warmed plates. Brush tops liberally with garlic butter, and allow to rest for 2 to 3 minutes before serving.

sounds good...
but I'd rather have ribeyes
Don't you have
a busy street you can go play on?
PANFRIED PEPPER RIB EYE STEAKS
With Roasted Parmesan Potato Slices.

2 large potatoes (about 1 1/4 lb.)
Olive oil
Salt
3 tbsp. grated Parmesan cheese
1 med. sized onion
2 beef rib eye steaks, each 1 inch thick
1 tsp. coarsely ground black pepper
1/4 c. balsamic or red wine vinegar

About 30 minutes before serving, preheat boiler if manufacturer directs. Slice unpeeled potatoes crosswise into 1/4 inch slices.
On ungreased jelly roll pan, arrange potatoes in a single layer, overlapping slightly if necessary. Drizzle potatoes with 2 tablespoons olive or salad oil and sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon salt. Place jelly roll pan with potatoes in broiler about 4 inches from source of heat. Broil potatoes 10 minutes turning them once. Sprinkle potatoes with Parmesan cheese. Broil 3 to 4 minutes longer until cheese melts and potatoes brown.

While potatoes are broiling, dice onion. In 12 inch skillet over medium heat in 1 tablespoon hot olive or salad oil, cook onion until tender with slotted spoon, remove onion to bowl.

Sprinkle steaks with pepper and 1/2 teaspoon salt. In same skillet over medium high heat, in 1 tablespoon hot olive or salad oil, cook steaks until browned on both sides, about 8 minutes for rare or until of desired doneness. Place steaks on warm platter. Keep warm.

Reduce heat to medium, spoon off fat. Add vinegar and cook onion. Cook 1 minute, stirring to loosen brown bits on bottom of skillet. Spoon onion mixture over steaks. Arrange Parmesan potatoes around steaks. To serve cut each steak in half.

Here you go....can you just hunker off to a dark corner and work on these until the game is over?

OH GREAT GLENDON IS WARMING UP!! THIS IS ALMOST AS GREAT AS NEIFI TAKING A WALK.

fair enough coop...
I'm gonna have to save that. You're a good sport.
hahaha
yeah I found it and I was like "whoa, this is long..."
Here come's
Glendon to hold them down. The Cubs hopes I mean.
nice....
and you're pretty much totally right, a leadoff walk and a basehit.

IS ANYONE SURPRISED??

We still have a chance!
Brad Lidge is warming up and he's the worst closer in baseball, even worse than Dempster. Cubs are still int his one, except that Glendon is still in....
Dempster is the worst closer in baseball....
and overpaid too.
Welcome back Glendon!
Says everyone else in MLB.
Glendon
has picked up where he left off after his 'injury'.
How many runs
will he give up before Dusty realizes he should not be pitching on this team?
If
Glendon gets in any more trouble the good news is that Dempster is up.
Well
that just made my day!!!
Dusty
will realize something? 5 more games until the All-Star break and hopefully 5 more games with Dusty as manager.
Sounds good.
I really hope/wonder about that. I'm hoping that the first day of the AS break we get some big news. Glendon is DFA'd, Dusty and his coaches are gone and the Cubs are in "talks" to land a marquee player.

Glen-done run total this game: 1

why
do you want a "marquee" player when the season is over?  It's an absolute waste.  Make some trades for some great prospects before the deadline!
True...
I just want to feel like something is actually happening.

I guess getting rid of some of our underproducing veterans and letting the kids play would be pretty exciting too. We could dream about MAYBE winning a WS once before 100 years is over.

Still only one run allowed...
Ha Ha
who didn't see that one coming??
Dusty didn't
he still thought he would honestly see Glendon mow them down in order.
Glen-done
Glendon run given up total: 3
Worst. Pitcher. Ever.
Make that
3 runs.
But he's a veteran!
Dear MLB,
It has become painfully evident that our manager, Dustbag Baker, and his pal, GM Jim Hendry have absolutely no clue on how to handle a pitching staff.  Therefore, Cub fans everywhere would like to step in and do their job for them.

Please take this post as official notification that we have "Designated for Assignment" Glendon Rusch.

Thank you,
Cub Fans

And
DFA Dusty and his rotten staff while they are at it.
T-48 games and counting
to 100 losses!
Gotta Love Len...
"Glendon's a little rusty."

LAWLZ

hahaha
you know this must be frustrating for them to. it can't be easy to try and put a calm and controlled face on how !@#$% this team is playing.
Whoah
He said that????!! How about telling the truth for once Lennie boy!
Another walk.
::yawn:: not surprised....

I don't know how I still haven't torn myself away from this game.

Yeah,
Glendon is 'just a little bit rusty'. I think Len meant that Glendon is a lot sucky.
Saves some face.
Bases loaded K....maybe the Royals would still take him!
I think
that Glendon is nearing 100 pitches for the inning.
good lord
would you people quit responding to the troll?
chill out "faith"
go take a walk in your Birkenstocks.

Blackberry Wings

25 to 30 chicken wing drumettes
4 tablespoons butter
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 pint fresh blackberries
3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
1/2 to 1 teaspoon hot Hungarian paprika (to taste)
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Place wings in single layer in baking pan and brush with melted butter. Mash garlic and salt together into paste. Using a wooden spoon, push the blackberries through a non-metallic sieve. Discard seeds. Mix garlic paste and blackberry juice with remaining ingredients and let set to blend flavors. Bake drumettes at 375°F for 1/2 hour.

Brush on blackberry sauce and continue to bake another 1/2 hour, until wings are tender. Baste and turn frequently. Add water if the juice cooks away before wings are done.

Seriously Hendry
what justification do you have for keeping Glendon Rusch on this team, he is an embarassment to the name of pitching.
He's
been quiet lately. I think the guards at Joliet caught him on the computer and returned him to his cell.
HANK WHITE!!!
proving he does belong on this team.
Hank White
Strikes again!
whee Blanco
Good thing Glendon came in to keep the game out of reach.
hank white!
comes through in the clutch!! and by clutch, i mean a completely useless homer
hahaha
but that's the only time this team scores late inning runs. it makes sense..

Len just reminded everyone that it is "2 runs on 7 hits"!!

Good for Henry.
Too little too late.
Have
a Happy 4th everybody.
game over.
I can finally get on with my day and dream about changes next week.

key word: dream.

Same story different day.
Hendry.....
ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!  RELEASE RUSCH !!!!!!
Anyone who is
going to Cub Con next year needs to ask him directly and bluntly what justification he had for keeping Rusch on this team for as long as he did.
Nobody will......
and its not like it will matter....Hendry will do the same old song and dance routine about how Rusch was good for us and he deserved another opportunity despite being 43-100 for his career etc.
