Bleed Cubbie Blue

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Braves, Thursday 6/7, 6:35 CT

I'm posting this game thread early this afternoon because in a couple of hours, I'll be getting on a plane and heading to Atlanta. I won't make it in time for tonight's game, but I will be at the Ted for the rest of the series. I know quite a number of you will be there -- if you are going, please email me using the link on the right sidebar so we can meet up at the game.

Rematch time! This pitching matchup is the same as last Saturday's at Wrigley Field. I thank the teams for saving me editing time.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Rich Hill
 R. Hill
Cubs
vs. Chuck James
 C. James
Braves
4-4 W-L 5-4
2.89 ERA 3.78
63 SO 51
24 BB 28
10 HR 9
vs. Atl -- vs. Cubs
Here's the boxscore from the matchup between Hill and James last Saturday. Hill threw well in a losing effort.

Note: I have had several requests that, if possible, I add the NL Central standings to the sidebar. Ask and you shall receive (well, most of the time, if I can do it, anyway). Hope you like it.

Finally today, I have good news to report regarding Howard and his cowbell, "banned" from the bleachers on Sunday. Due to the efforts of several season ticket holders who contacted Paul Rathje, director of stadium operations, Howard can bring -- and ring -- his cowbell any time.

Today's game is local-cable only: CSN and Sports South. It'll be on EI and at the Mediacenter.

That's awesome
in regards to the cowbell being allowed back into the bleachers
3 of 4 would be great....
but I won't be disappointed if we split (especially w/ Hudson & Smoltz waiting for us on the weekend).

Losing 3 of 4 would be disastrous.

nice work...
i like the standings on the sidebar. a nice touch indeed.

a new question, however...is there a reason why the posting times on the board are off by an hour?

The posting
times are in the central time zone. If you're in the east or mountain it will be off an hour.
i'm in central
but everything still shows as being off by an hour... all my posts show an hour ahead of when the actually are.
nevermind...
i fixed it... my profile was set for eastern, so it was showing the times an hour ahead, but still listing the time zone as central...

...i'm an idiot. guess i just never switched that when i moved.

Bravo.......
to those who helped influence Mr. Rathje! Following through on the threat to "ban the bell" would have been absolutely ridiculous.
Hope you make it out of Chicago tonight
I understand that there is a major storm heading your way.
That's great for Howard
The whole idea of taking away the bell was ridiculous. I'm glad someone could see through the rules to make an appropriate exception.
If the banned the cowbell
the bleachers should be able to ban he-who-shall-no-be named as compensation.

That would be worth it right?

do you think the bleachers
will "ban the bra" next?
YAY for Howard!!
That was just silly to take away the cowbell in the first place.

Have a god trip Al and hope you bring the Cubs luck.

Good luck tonight Rich Hill.

GO CUBS!!!

Am I crazy or too optimistic?
But I've got a pretty good vibe coming from the Cubs lately.  Winning 3 of 4, the draft today, I don't know.  I'm feeling pretty good.  Let's keep it up tonight, of course, I might be setting myself up for disappointment.
El Gato
It's all about the El Gato factor.  He brings that good vibe.  Pie needs to play against lefties too.  Let' hope he starts tonight against Chuck James.
Pie
not only has terrible numbers vs LHP, he's looked totally overmatched. Sit him and allow Pagan to play. Why put Pie in a position to fail when there are better alternatives?
the former
Yeah, you're crazy and more optimistic than our history warrants. But so am I, and so are most of the others here. You pretty much have to be in Cub land right?
Also optimistic
There is too much talent on this team not to be. It's a matter of putting the player pieces together and finishing the lineup puzzle. I absolutely believe that Soriano and Pie at 1 and 2 in the lineup is the key to the solution. Everything will fall in line naturally after them.
I'll be there tonight
and probaly at least 2 of the 4 games.  i feel like my timing in being atlanta couldn't be better.  for some reason i truly believe this will be one of the defining series of the early season.

"let's reeeaaally try to win one today boys"

  ---name the movie, earn points

Drop me an email...
... and we can meet up.
I don't like losing Ramirez...
...unless we get someone to take playing time away from Cesar. DeRosa's bat is fine as a subin at third for a while; Cesar worries me frightfully. E-Pat, Fontenot or Cedeno -- there's arguements for and against all of them, but if A-Ram is out for longer than this series, I want one of them up on the Cubs soon.
Me neither, BUT
good teams (and the jury is still out if we are in fact one of them) find a way to win without important players.  this will be a nice test against a good braves team
Hell with "important"...
...this is a simple function of roster management. The Cubs have five infielders: Lee, DeRosa, Theriot, Izturis, Ramirez. If you have to make an infield subsitituion with Ramirez unavailable, your options are:

  • Soriano to 2B.
  • Barrett/Floyd/Murton to 3B.

For one, two, three games? I can live with that. Maybe. For a week? 10 days? No way. Especially since Izturis plays the most defensively challenging position out there and is a loudly beeping time bomb of an injury risk.

I'm leaning toward E-Pat
2nd: E-Pat
SS: Theriot
3B: DeRosa

Or we could just put Vitters at 3rd. jk

we'd be fast
Soriano
E-Pat
Pie

that's a lot of speed.

Yes
Any chance Pagan could come in as a late-inning replacement in right?  That'd be an insanely fast lineup.
I'd love to have E-Pat on the team.
Of course, I don't think I've ever kept this a secret. But it'd have to be the same deal as with Pie this time around: you get to play. Keep the pressure off them, let them excel. I think they could really jumpstart this team, ESPECIALLY if this pushes Theriot to be the regular at short.
Ok, what's the arguement against Fontenot?
The arguement against Fontenot...
...is that he's scalding cold in June, putting up a line of .190/.261/.286 this month. I don't know if I like that arguement, but I'll conceed that it's something to think about.

But, since our team is devoted to the idea that we need 12 pitchers, 6 outfielders, and two catchers, we have very few options if we need to make an infield substitution, so we need someone. If we're going to be devoted to Izturis getting playing time, Fontenot is the best choice -- hard to retard the development of a guy you've already written off.

Probably won't be able to watch the game tonight
weather forecasting tornadoes all over up here tonight.  Unless I can move the TV to the basement, hmm... now, THAT'S a thought!
if miller is wrigley north, ted is wrigley south
i was there for game five in 2003 - bought tickets on ticketmaster a few days before just a few rows up from the field - and found myself surrounded by good guys. they said it was cheaper to fly to ATL and stay overnight than it was to get tickets at wrigley. maybe it's apathy in atlanta, or just that blazing heat (expect upper 90's this weekend), but braves fans show no support for an organization that regularly puts quality teams on the field.
Well it can get old you know...
winning your division every year for 13 years. Playoffs again? Yawn.

I wonder what its like to feel like that. My very soul aches to know.

I have a good feeling too...
If we can avoid: giving up 20 hits, brawls (both planned and unplanned), and uselessly getting thrown out at third base...and I think they can...I hope...
Isn't tonight's game 6:35 central?
You are Correct Sir!
You're right.
Heading to Atlanta, I was already on Eastern time. I fixed it.
The game is not on TBS?
Not today.
Tomorrow.
Damn!
Thanks
Wow Al.
I hate you. Well I'm really just jealous. I wish I could go to Atlanta and watch the games.

I hope you get out of the airport. It sounds pretty bad.

Go Richard!

Schilling just lost...
a no-hitter after 8 2/3 innings.  Ouch.
Lineups
Cubs
Soriano, LF
Pie, CF
Lee, 1B
Murton, RF
Barrett, C
DeRosa, 3B
Theriot, 2B
Izturis, SS
Hill, P

Braves
Johnson, 2B
Escobar, 3B
Renteria, SS
A. Jones, CF
Francoeuer, RF
Diaz, LF
McCann, C
Thorman, 1B
James, P

Can't say any of this suprises me.
Any idea if we'll hear more about A-Ram tonight, Bruce?
No surprises
I'm still hoping to see E-Pat get a chance soon
Patella tendinitis
Case said to be "severe." He could pinch hit this weekend but they'd rather re-evaluate Monday. With bad weather in Chicago, it's doubtful he'd get here tonight. He'll arrive in Atlanta tomorrow.
...eww.
Don't like the sounds of that at all. Nice if he can pinch-hit, but doesn't help the dearth of infield options any. If they don't want to put Ramirez on the DL, I'd say send down one of Murton/Pagan for an infielder until such time as either Aram goes on the DL (where they could call up anyone they want, regardless of the 15-day "churning" rule) or they get him healthy again.
I should add...
...thanks a lot for doing this, Bruce.
Doing my best Will Carroll...
...imitation, the tendon involved seems to be conected to the quadriceps. I can't exactly say that I'm suprised here.
This is usually a basketball injury
but it is related to players that have had previous quad injuries like Ramirez.  If you watch Ramirez hit, he really torques his front leg, and I'll bet this contributes to his problem.

Load him up with anti-inflamatory medication, give him the weekend off and see how he is.  If they want to get aggressive, they could give him a cortisone shot or two as well.  In general, I would bet Ramirez has to work a little harder to keep his legs in better shape.

What to watch, what to watch?
I'll have the Cubs game on mlb.tv but the TV will be tuned to ABC to watch Game 1 of the NBA Finals - Go Spurs Go!
Gee
You're a Spurs fan?  From your user name, I never would have guessed.
I know, it's kinda cryptic
lol :)
I hope
the Spurs win too.
Best news I have heard all day...
More Cowbell!!

Great work AL!

I've got a fever!
and the only cure......is more cowbell!
I put my pants on the same as everyone else...
...except when I have them on, I make gold records.
now let me ask you
would you rather be the top scientist in your field or get mad cow?
Extra infielder
Lou just told Ron that his first backup infielder tonight is Koyie Hill, who can play a little 2B and 3B, then Soriano.  Said he might need to get another infielder up in a day or two if Aramis's knee strain lingers.
And in desperation...
...I'm sure Jason Marquis would be available to play some infield.
Extra Infielder
I think I'd rather see Hendry put the Trammel Train on the Active Roster for tonight!
re: Extra Infielder
Heck yeah! Fire up the Trammell Train!
I have a bad feeling I am getting hosed on MLB EI
tonight... Nashville will get blacked out since we are in the Braves area- but Sportsouth is not available on my cable. The Braves and Reds always get us.....
Just move Soriano to 2b and DeRosa to 3b
and start Murton in left.  Even Murton's better than Izturis.
Soriano hasn't taken infield practice
in a LONG time. And Murton's already in the lineup. Is Jones better than Izturis against a lefty? I don't know about that. I honestly don't. Especially if you factor in the difference between infield defense for Soriano RIGHT NOW and Izturis -- even if you take the least charitable assesement of Izturis as a defensive liability, which I'm coming around to.
And in the time it takes me...
...to deliver the ultimate insult to Jones (that he's not any more offensively useful than Izturis), Soriano and Pie collaborate to put us ahead at the top of the frame. I think Soriano is shutting up a LOT of his detractors right now, and Pie is definately a fixture.
Floyd in rf
or is he hurt again?
I think Floyd is about...
...as good as he can be. But Murton is in RF against the lefty.
I think that was more in response to...
...my comparison of Jones and Izturis offensively, than questioning Murton. Even though I handled the response pretty much the other way.
I don't think there's...
...a point this season where Cliff Floyd has really been healthy, and his career platoon splits against lefties aren't exceptional. He's better than Jones, to be sure, and I think he's probably the best right field option on the team currently, but against a lefty I think Murton has to start.

And I don't think putting Soriano at second is a good idea, as much as I'd like to see Cesar out of the lineup.

Huh?
my lineup would be lee @ 1b, sori @2b, Theriot @ ss, Derosa @ 3b, murton in LF, Pie in CF and floyd in rf...
And I responded...
...by saying that Soriano at second scares me. The last time Lou put him out there, he spent the inning praying that nobody would hit the ball to him. Literally. He said as much in the postgame. Leave him where he's comfortable and let him produce.
Exactamundo.
Soriano at second is only slightly less scary than Barrett at shortstop.
I'm generally willing...
...to trade offense for defense. I'd be more worried about untracking Soriano offensively.
I love Pie
lol! 1-0 quickly
You know it dude!
These two guys together are gonna help the Cubs win a lot of games in the coming years.
Nice Pie RBI
and against a left-hander too.  Nice to see.
wow what a great AB by Lee
he is sure patient!
Gameday
The 2006 version link above is to last night's game.  ANybody know the correct link?
Help!
Please!  I hate the 2007 version.
bULLSHIT!
Gameday had that well outside
I think Murton...
...got squeezed by the ump there. Either that or he's just trash that doesn't belong on a majore league roster. Take your pick.
I'd say a lil bit of both
n/t
BlueMike, could you weigh in here?
I don't think you've addressed this topic before.
Oh god
How bad is Aramis?  I turn on the tv and there talking about replacements???
and gameday just called
that Barret's ball was right down the middle of the plate
Looked above the waist...
So, y'know. He must not have gotten the notice about calling a "rulebook" K zone.
Barrett volunteered to play short if necessary!
Oh wow. Somebody help me up off the floor when I'm done laughing.

Ok, now that that's over with... he's more offensively useful than Izturis, at least. And his batting line doesn't look nearly as bad at short...

gotta love
the extra base hits that sori and pie produce at the top of the order...
Nice start
for Hill.
Al, a quick note
The 2006 Gameday link went to yesterdays game.
FYI for everyone else
We're being treated to the "fancy" 2007 Gameday with pitch tracks.
I posted this and everyone's ignoring me :(
Sorry
I noticed your post of course right after I hit "post"
Blame
I don't blame you, I blame everyone else!

Arbusto cry now.

I don't know
how to change it. Sorry. Try emailing Al.He might be checking his emails soon and can change it.
Wish fulfillment,
Old Gameday.

I can't fathom why.

Thanks!
It's much smoother and faster.  Far less cluttered.  It doesn't get stuck 2 batters behind.
I had to turn on gameday
just for the pitch tracks
Off
I clicked the little option to turn these off and they're still running.
Izturis!!
He's getting hot!
We're rockin'!
Good to see Alf crowd that plate too.
2-0 Cubbies
Keep Al in the friendly skies more often!
Uh oh...
...I hope we don't see "Home Run Hill" again.
And Andruw hits one out
2-1
Hill's at bat
He did strike out but took 6 pitches to do it.

I see a better Cubs approach at the plate.

I can't believe...
...Franceour swung at that.
This game will be decided
by the pens. Yikes!

Hill already at 30+ pitches

I will confess...
...that there's a voice in the back of my mind that looks at that and starts thinking whisfully of the idea of Gallagher as our long reliever.

What? I get too attatched to the notion of Cubs prospects? Yeah, I hear that sometimes.

I thought that
and I don't fall in love with them...much.
Short Inning
Nearly.  Hadn't used many pitches for the first two outs and then the walk.  Why the walk?
can someone please tell me why....
....Murton is hitting 4th?
He needs a "pickmeup"...
...per Len and Bob.
Braves line up
I have never heard of any of these guys.
don't start that crap
walking people is not good. Pitches looked close though.
good job!
We'll see how Hill handles Jones next time.
Guzman out at least two weeks
Wow.
That looked like a gapper for sure. Good catch by Jones.
C Izzy needs to step up
He's...not good.
I wouldn't hold my breath...
as you said, he's not good.
He's not a "strong hitter."
Tough inning
If hill gets through this one he's be rolling.
Hill's breaking stuff...
...is looking better.
If only we had a guy like...
...Cesar Izturis with some range, we would've had that ball.

Oh. Wait.

I'm still waiting...
for Izturis to make a defensive play that warrants him ever seeing the playing field.  Something tells me I'm going to be waiting a long long time (or at least until the offseason when he's let go).
re: I'm still waiting...
I've seen him make a couple somewhat spectactular plays but, then again, I've seen Ronnie Cedeno make a few somewhat spectacular plays, too.
dp
Here we go
Is it just GameDay's pitch display
or is the umpire being really, really random?
FWIW...
the radio guys sound as though he's missed a few calls.  But again, take that for what it's worth.
re: Is it just GameDay's pitch display
I wouldn't put too much faith in Gameday's pitch display. A game or two ago, I saw it clearly showing that DLee had taken four balls and yet somehow he didn't have a walk.
Time to add some this inning.
Fonz and Felix
Lets see it.
Can the Cubs stop...
...hitting the ball to centerfield, please?
wow, great inning
Hill at 68 pitches
Not to bad.
D Lee needs to get out of the funk
He's pressing for sure. I wonder if it's personal?
Man
the Braves defense is good.  Unbelievably good.
Mike Kincaide...
...just stole home in the I-Cubs game.
C'mon Pie...
...make them pay.
Amen
Amen brother...Amen....

(God I love Felix....seriously, I'm excited he's on our team...first time I've felt that way about a Cubs position player since....well, Jerome Walton, briefly.)

Oh gahd...bad call
I know I'm biased
but we sure seem to get a lot of those.
re: I know I'm biased
Yeah, I  know what you mean. I was referring to strike two against Felix, which was shoulder high, but he was probably safe at first, too.
Felix
was clearly out at first if that's what you're referring to.
re: Felix
OK, fine. Strike two was still BS.
Again
their defense!!!
Murton
Can someone please tell me what he brings to this team? Why isn't Floyd getting more playing time? LHP or not, Murton's still awful defensively and an automatic out at the plate.
With his speed...
...Floyd wouldn't have been anywhere near that ball.
True
But he can at least hit.
Not against LHP he can't...
look at his 3-year splits versus LHP.

It sucks, but Murton is definitely the best option of the Jones/Floyd/Murton platoon against LHP.

re: Murton
Well, I don't think Floyd would have caught that ball either. And I wouldn't say Murton is an automatic out, though he's obviously in a pretty bad slump right now.
Floyd...
would not have come close to making that play.  If Murton laid out instead of sliding he could have made that play.  I guess that's what we get with a mediocre left fielder in right field.
Floyd...
is actually worse versus LHP than Murton has been this year (which is the worst Murton has been).  He just doesn't hit LHP at all.  And defensively he's no better than Murton.  Don't think for a second Floyd is anywhere near that ball.
Rich...
has dropped down a lot more than he usually does tonight.  I wonder why.  And it's great hearing Braves' announcers salivate over his performance.  Rock on Mr. Hill.
And while everybody bitches...
Murton goes 1-3 with a walk. In case you're scoring at home, that's not a bad night.
Perhaps
I was a bit harsh, but there's no doubting he's in a slump. I'm not really down on Murton (.263) as much as I'm big on Floyd (.309). Also, putting big red in the cleanup spot as some kind of "confidence boost" boggles the mind.
It comes down to the platoon split.
Floyd is worse that Murton against lefties, and has been his whole career.

And I prefer both of them to Jones by a mile.

Now
there's something we can all agree with.
Exactly
it's not like Floyd is going to suddenly figure out how to hit LHP at this point in his career.  He's an ideal platoon player.  Murton isn't great, but he hits LHP better than either Floyd or Jones.
what's his numbers again?
Neifi had a hit and a walk in a game too...
Neifi got more playing time than Murton
Murton really has no spot on this team
With Soriano signed for years and big bucks he is obsolete. He does not have the arm for RF...Floyd and Pagan should be handling RF most of the time unless they trade for something better.
Murton's had a single and a walk tonight.
Not great, but not an automatic out.
Michael Barrett on the other hand...
Seriously,
how does anyone beat this fucking team with this defense.
Ughh.
Barrett has completely lost his bat.  While gamecast had the called strike three inside by a fair amount, you gotta protect.

And as I'm typing this, another hard hit ball to the outfield but within grasp of their D.  Rich never gets good run support.

Barrett is captain double play....
a 2007 version of Joe Girardi
Hill
a phenomenal pitching outing tonight. Do you think he will be pitching Sunday against the Padres (June 17th)?
Hill brilliant
n/t
What a performance by Hill
Give it up for Filthy Rich!
108 pitches through 8 IP...
I say we bring in Dempster, but there's no doubting Hill wants the CG.
Or not.
Forgot he was due up here in the 9th. Big, big, big save opportunity for Dempster if we don't tack it on big time in the top half.
Keep Hill In
It looks like he's just playing catch out there.
Idunno...
I'm not excited about Hill facing Jones again, especially at about 115+ pitches.
Time for the CG....
dont tempt fate by going to the bullpen!
Demp is warming up...
...looks like Hill is done.
hmmmm....not sure I like that
n/t
You want Floyd?
You got him. (Pinch hitting.)
And in a perfect spot...
versus a hard-throwing RHP.
hill had an AB
the 9th is his
wait
nvm
LOL
I trust you're not watching the game, chanman.
haha
gotta love gameday
As much as you want Rich...
to finish it, you have to have faith in your closer.  Dempster needs to be able to come in in situations like this and finish them off.  If he's not capable of that, this team doesn't have a chance.  As much as it pains me to say it, I agree with this move.

Knock on wood, and let's go Demps.

Exactly...
Hill is at 108 pitches.  You don't send a guy out with that kind of pitch count to face the 2, 3, and 4 hitters.

This is Dempster's job.

Fasten those seatbelts...
Here we go
Grab your jockstraps (real and figurative).
Okay
This is Dempster's chance to polish off a great pitching performance. Throw some strikes and keep the bases empty!
Make quick work Demp
Time to earn it!!!!!
2 outs to go
and I'm nervous!
Why bring in Dempster here?
Did Hill say he was done?
Do you want him...
facing Jones at about 115 or so pitches?

You don't leave a starter in at this point with the big bopper coming up.

Because he is the closer?
I am guessing you posted this so you can say I told you so if he blows it. But Hill has throw too many pitches and he has been thru the lineup multiple times...
Don't be
I believe.
Demp is the right move.
This is his job.

One more...

1 more out to go!
get it done!! lock up a 1 run game!
Walk jones?
No...
don't bring the winning run to the plate.
I love being wrong!
Way to go Hill and Demp!!
YEAH!!!
CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN!
Cubs win!!
2-1, a rare one run win!! way to go Hill, Demp, and Pie!
YEAH!!
CUBS WIN!

That was one maddening 1-2-3 inning.

I lost power...
...in the middle of it.

Nice to get the W, though.

Exactly.
Good move Lou.  Great game Rich.  Well done Demps.  Time to celebrate.
Slap me on the butt and call me Betty!
Demp with a 1-2-3 save.

This was an awesome win!

Game
a one run win.

Chalk it up guy's good win all the way around.

Thats a great team effort
Go Cubs!
Another nice
win for the Cubs.
Wins like that...
...are harder to sit through. But, man, do they feel good. One-run victory. Sweet.
Suddenly...
the Cubs have won four of fives against some good teams.
a much needed win
and now they better go out and win tomorrow and atleast another one in this series
And
the Reds are beating the Cards 4-0.
Holy Shit
A 1 Run Win
Where would the Cubs be without Rich Hill
What a pick-me-upper he's been.
This isnt the first time I've said it but
in my fantasy league, i got him in a trade for Scott Podsednik (DL all year) and Derek Lowe, who is now a FA in my league, lol, can you say Good Scouting?  (And a little bit of luck, lol)
For some damn reason ...
I was mired in a Rangers' blackout.  Nice to see the Cubbies won!  Yay!
South Sliders give up GS
to a-roo.

What a pitching staff.  I mean, "What a pitching staff!"

Fans are out on the field - shocked.

and they give up another run...
Look at all the debris on the field!!!  Crappy grounds crew on the southside, lol...
and 1 more
on E6!  more debris on feild...  Yanks have batted around... mostly with 2 outs
It was 4-3, now the sox are losing 10-3!
Maelky Cabrera makes 1st and last out of inning, lol, thats gotta suck
haha
Terrific Win for
Rich Hill - had he had run support, he'd have a couple more w's.

And, Andreuw Jones! The CF vacuum cleaner tonight!

Let's hope JJones rides the pines for a while.

Sox give up 7 w/ 2 out.
in the 9th. ouch.

It's never over till it's over...

whoops 6 rather.
HEY YOU< MATT ALLSION!!!
MATT ALLISON, get rid of my sig., I've had it since he was called up the first time....
Please....
There you go Bro!
HAHA,
Thats still my boy, but I like it, lol.  thanks
Yes, I know this is a Cubs Blog
But just wanted to mention one more time...

Go Spurs Go!

Three more wins ~ Four Trophies in the Case

Boo Spurs...
Actually Boo these Finals overall
Hard to cheer...
for a bunch of cheap-shot artists (Bowen and Horry) and a flopper (Ginobili), in my opinion.
Spurs
I don't have any problems with the Spurs, I just have a hard time with the idea of calling them a dynasty like the media is starting to.
as you can see
I truly believe in this since I got excited and accidentally double posted.
Spurs
I don't have any problems with the Spurs, I just have a hard time with the idea of calling them a dynasty like the media is starting to.
How 'bout Hill?
It's nice to see the kid pitch like a killer on a road trip tonight.  11 K's.

Tonight's outing makes any (shield your eyes) Zambrano playoff-marker deal all the more plausible.  And I am a Zambrano fan.

In my humble opinion, trade Zambrano for Maine and Sosa.

Deal Jones for Shields (LAA) for middle relief help.

Keep playing Pie.

Soriano is a leadoff hitter for now (strangely).  His leadoff position yields somewhere near .315 - .320, and his 2-5 slot shows a struggling .220-260.  The guy can rake in the leadoff spot to date.  When can he fit comfortably in the 5 spot?

There's No Way.....
...the Angels are trading Shileds for Jacque Jones. Zip. None. The only way they part with Shields is if the Cubs offered up Ramirez. Seriously.
Or - check that - what's wrong with
Soriano 1
Theriot 2
Pie 3
D. Lee 4
Aramis 5
Pagan 6
Barret 7
Izturis 8
Um, no.
Lee's power output this year -- can't clean up right now. A-Ram has to bat 4th. Pie is either 2nd, or 7th. His speed -- need him near the top -- he's not taking walks yet, but he's getting on base. A bit more patience, and he's a good #2. Lee must be in the 3-hole.

Way too much Theriot love here. 6th, or 7th.

I don't know
Theriot has an OBP of .337 with 8 stolen bases and 28 runs scored. He's got 19 RBIs, too. He's got a better OBP than Pie (.286).

He's tied with Soriano for stolen bases. That strikes me as a good 1-2 punch.
Derosa's got a better OBP (.346) but no stolen bases.

The top of the lineup has to get on base and do something with that.

I'm not attached to the idea completely, but it's just my little look at the stats.

phat

I understans SD jazzman's point
Yet I think all hell has broken loose with this lineup.  Lee can ba the .460 contact hitter all he wants.  He is top-3 hitter in baseball (no shit).

Ramirez gets back, and Theriot to short.

Sean Gallager is coming this week.  We have a derth of pitching now.  F the Cardinals

Gotta
leave Pie where he is at 2. Everyone's been hollering about chemistry, and we finally have a quality example of it with these two doing a Frick and Frack dealio. Build on it from there.
Yay!
The cowbell returneth!

Who are these men in blue by the way?
Methinks it looks like a baseball team!
