Bleed Cubbie Blue

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Braves, Saturday 6/9, 6:05 CT

I'm opening the game thread early today because I'm heading out and won't be near a computer again before the game starts.

Tonight's national telecast is on WGN. I presume local cable systems in the Atlanta area carrying the game on Sports South won't black it out with a Braves logo with a roll of $100 bills, as some Comcast areas in Chicago did last night:

Somebody at Comcast has a sense of humor!

Alfonso Soriano's leadoff HR last night was his 35th. That ties Bobby Bonds for 4th-most in major league history (Brady Anderson, 44; Craig Biggio, 52; and Rickey Henderson, 81, are the three who have had more). Soriano also became the first Cub to hit three HR off the same pitcher since Sammy Sosa hit three of Houston's Tim Redding on September 23, 2001.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Jason Marquis
 J. Marquis
Cubs
vs. Tim Hudson
 T. Hudson
Braves
5-2 W-L 6-4
2.84 ERA 3.09
40 SO 54
26 BB 22
6 HR 3
vs. Atl -- vs. Cubs
Jason Marquis is facing his former team, the Braves, for the first time as a Cub. However, in three starts for the Cardinals vs. Atlanta, he is 0-2 with a 14.40 ERA. A great deal of that came from this game on July 18, 2006, when Tony LaRussa left him in to take his second 12+ run pounding of the season. He got over the first one earlier this year by beating the White Sox.

Andruw Jones is his tormentor, 7-for-10 lifetime with four home runs.

Tim Hudson is 2-0 lifetime with a 3.00 ERA in 3 career starts vs. the Cubs. The white-hot Alfonso Soriano has hit 3 HR in 34 career AB vs. Hudson -- but has only 3 other hits. Jacque Jones also has 3 HR in 34 AB vs. Hudson -- and a total line of .324/.343/.618. And, Hudson has been hit hard lately -- he is 1-3 with a 6.66 ERA in his last four starts. Let's continue that trend tonight.

Let's Clinch Season Series.......
A win tonight and the Cubs clinch the season series against the Braves, trying not to let optimism cloud my judgment but lets get 1 of 2 this weekend and I think we will all be satisfied.
Let's get the sweep
Forget 1 of 2... GO FOR THE SWEEP!!!
How Had Hudson played
against the Cubs in his career?  And whats the matchup for tommorrow afternoon?
Nevermind the first question
I missed that part...
I believe Hudson
faced the Cubs at Wrigley when he was with Oakland.  No idea if he faced them with Atlanta.
Hudson Vs. Cubs
21 IP 2-0 3.00 ERA

I vaguely remember the Cubs hitting him pretty hard 1 outing a couple seasons ago.

My unsung hero
for the Cubs latest resurgence...

Carlos Marmol

The man has been a stabilizing force out of our bullpen, which was BADLY needed in the first few months of the season.  He hasn't given up an earned run all season, he hasn't walked a batter in his last four appearances, hasn't given up a hit in eight of his ten appearances.

In addition, you gotta give kudos to Hendry or Piniella or whomever decided that Marmol should be in the pen.  He's been awesome and I believe he has loosened up that pen and the rest of the pitchers are pitching better.

Let's keep it up boys and clinch the series win tonight!

Gallagher
where has he been?  Yesterday would have been perfect in the last third of the game...
I think....
....he was busy.  Something about a watermelon and sledgehammer....
lol chad
I'm sure that'll get at some point in time however.
He was in the bullpen during the 9th inning
Crap I should have gone
Could have had those great seats at Ted for FREE. Well I would have probably missed the first two Fonzie homers anyway as
the flight I would have taken was late and I would have been lucky to make the game by 8.15. Oh well. Hopefully my friends
will get me tickets next year

Good luck tonight Al

Good luck Al?
 Is Atlanta traffic that bad?
Anyone else...
wish Soriano had been batting 3rd of 4th last night? With Ramirez out, I don't know why we can't go with Theriot & Pie at the top.
Why?
Because we're WINNING for a change.  Lou had 35 lineups in 30 games.  I'm just glad he has more or less settled on something.
Brilliant
Brilliant satire there.

phat

Lots of Cubbie blue..
...out and about in Atlanta today.  There will probably be 5k-7k out again tonite. Let's get some chants going!

No rain forcast for tonite either, hooray!

It's official...
ESPN is saying that John Smoltz will miss his start against the Cubs tomorrow night.
any word on who will start for the bravos?
Buddy Carlyle
"Carlyle (1-1) allowed only one hit in seven innings in a 3-1 win over Florida on Tuesday but was optioned to Richmond because the team needed another arm for the bullpen for the second game of a double-header on Tuesday night."
HUGE
lawd!  Thank you!
lineups!
CUBS
  1. Soriano
  2. Pie
  3. Lee
  4. Barrett
  5. Jones
  6. DeRosa
  7. Fontenot
  8. Izturis
  9. Marquis
BRAVES
  1. Johnson
  2. Harris
  3. Renteria
  4. Jones
  5. McCann
  6. Francoeur
  7. Thorman
  8. Escobar
  9. Hudson
Looks like the same lineup for the Cubs as last night except Fontenot in for Theriot, which I'm fine with.  Theriot has been in a long slump of late, so why not try something new?

Theriot and Izturis almost have the same average!  Who woulda thought that a month ago...

I guess
but Izturis has been in a slump for like two years.
Izturis
Is hitting .293 since May 11th.
yep, big slump.

Could someone tell me WHY Michael Barrett is hitting fourth!??!?!?!?!
Jimeny.
JJ, coz of the Hudson #'s, I understand why he's hitting 5th.

I would like DeRosa hitting fourth.
I'm not a big DeRosa fan, but I'd just like him hitting there.

you pay Izturis
To be an above average fielder (which he's been for the past month)
To hit the fastball/changeup combo well (which he has for the past month)

He's a shortstop playing right where he should be.
You wanna complain about somebody on this team look no further than Mr. Garbage #8 Michael Barrett, JJ, or Matt Murton.

Debatable...
on the first part.  I've not seen him differentiate defensively from Theriot this year.  Offensively, he hit tolerably in May (not well, though: he had a .688 OPS), but he stunk miserably in April and has stunk miserably in June, and thus has stunk miserably overall.  And on top of stinking in general, he's paid WAY too much.

No debate that Barrett, Jones, and Murton haven't played well (Murton less so than the other 2), but Izturis should fall right in that category too.

Note that...
in every measurable defensive statistic per ESPN, Theriot has matched or outperformed Izturis at SS this year.  Below are the per-inning numbers for both:

Izturis (348.2 innings): 0.43 TC, 0.13 PO, 0.29 A, .014 E, 0.057 DP, .967 FDG%, 3.78 RF, .812 ZR.

Theriot (129.1 innings): 0.47 TC, 0.l8 PO, 0.29 A, 0.008 E, 0.069 DP, .984 FDG%, 4.18 RF, .850 ZR.

Despite all the talk of Izturis' great defense, Theriot has gotten to more balls and fielded a higher percentage of them cleanly.  I'd suspect that other more sophisticated measures will tell a similar story that Izturis hasn't brought any fantastic defense to the table this year.

I wasn't complaining about Theriot
I want Theriot to play EVERY day.

I was just getting on these TYPICAL Cub fans that rant on
a.  Jacque Jones OR
b.  Cesar Izturis

We need to look at what Barrett and Murton have done over the past two months.

NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY has been worse defensively this year than Matt Murton.

If you can't see this you suffer from mild mental issues which you should go see a doctor about.  I apologize.  I hate to put it that way, I just can't put it ANY other way.

Matt Murton is TERRIBLE.

Murton has definitely struggled defensively...
but that doesn't mean that Barrett, Jones and Izturis haven't sucked too.

I'm always amused that a thread about Izturis can somehow come back to Murton.  I'm not sure what Murton sucking defensively so far in RF has to do with Izturis sucking or not sucking.  They have BOTH sucked.

Some numbers on Izturis
With at least 1 runner on base .196
RISP .194
Late innings of close game .437 OPS
RBI this year 6
RISP .479 OPS
He's grounded into as many DP as he has RBI. Pure and simple, he's a rally buster. He's slap hitter that has destroyed many opportunities to break a game open. And if anyone claims he's a better fielder than Theriot, he is basing it on perception or reputation, not reality.
Wow...
with Ramirez and Floyd out, this team really lacks pop.  Izturis and Jones with their sub .650 OPS don't help much.  Hopefully Jones' past success against Hudson will show up, but I doubt it since he's been much worse this year than his career norms.

And hopefully Marquis will throw another gem and we won't need too much offense, anyway.

Fontenot
THis is his first start as a Cub, correct?
Still like Theriot
even though he's slumping. Maybe a rest day will bring him out of it.
Yes
I agree. At first when I saw Fontenot in the lineup, it was something that made me say Hmm. But I think you're right, a day off for Theriot is needed.
tonight will be the hardest to win
if they win tonight, they could probably win tomorrow since a minor leaguer is going, not Smoltz. Hudson is going to be the hardest to beat
Joe Morgan is that you?
with Marquis pitching
and hitting 9th, maybe Soriano can actually come up with someone on base!
ha
 Seriously though, great point!
Fontenot to play today?
I wonder if Mike Fontenot will get a shot to play today or tomorrow?  I'd rather see him at second and Theriot at Shortstop than Caesar.

Also, not sure where I read it but Ronny Cedeno went to Venezuela for the birth of his second child.  I have an odd feeling he might have been called up instead if available as his bat finally is hitting again.

With interleague starting up do you think we're going to keep 11 pitchers for the next week and a half?

I really hope
they can continue their winning streak tonight.

Good luck tonight Jason Marquis.

GO CUBS!!!

I love rookies like Pie, Fontenot, and Theriot
they are excited every game (like they were getting pumped up in the dugout) and they always give it all.
Soriano plunked on first pitch
lol that was intentional and everyone knows it
That was not
a good way to start the game.
classess and whinning
and if that comes back to bite Hudson he will look like an ass
well there's the plunk
 we assumed yesterday was coming.

Hate the warning though. Cubs can't retaliate now without losing a Pitcher.

And if any of you are wondering...
...what Scott Eyre is good for, now you know.
That was overdue from yesterday
BB for Pie
Real nice ab there for the kid.
NICE!!!!!
WTG LEE  heads up to 2nd too....NOW that's what i'm talking about!!! That's heads up baseball!!!
That was a good AB for Lee
he's been pressing lately and that might remind him that now that people are getting on base in front of him, he doesn't have to drill the ball out of the park every time up.
Lee
yesterday Lee broke his cherry with a hit to right. Today another hit that way. He's back.
and if he starts driving that pitch
 looookout.
C'mon JJ
Just put the ball in play please??!!!
IBB for JJ
I know it sets up a Double play, but I still woudn't walk JJ....too early for that and wayyy to much respect for someone who sucks donkey stones with RISP.
Thank you Atlanta
walking JJ is the smart thing to do. LOL
Ugly AB for Barrett
real ugly
Sick change up though by Hudson for the K.
Let's go De-rosa
 Clap clap
your clapping worked
lol
Woohoo!!
Thank you Mark.
2 run single for Derosa!!
 yessss.

How's that plunk of Soriano working out for ya Hudson?

Memo to Cox
When you intentionally walk either Jones or Izturis, it's time to get new scouts.
Seriously...
I agree.... he was going purely on the "book". Bad call on that one.
As a part-time curmodgeon
I am really impressed with the sit. hitting on this streak.

THIS is what I had envisioned in MArch.

Fontenot
looks like he's 12...

but he comes through!

4-0 Cubbies!

FONTENOT!
Fontenot welcome back to the big show!!
happy birthday, there is your first RBI, though DeRosa out

4-0!

I came into this series being nervous about a Braves sweep of the Cubs, ha!

NICCEEEE
 Fontenot niiiiceee

RBI for Fontenot.

Like the aggressiveness by Derosa at third, even though he was out.

 Is that Fontenot's first RBI?

yup

First of many hopefull
Congrats Fontenot. First RBI of a very good pitcher. Not HOF pitcher but a very good pitcher.

A-hole Hudson
that's what he gets for (intentionally) plunking Soriano
4-0 after 0.5 Innings
Mike Fontenot and the Raucous New Cubs.
Marquis
should be hitting ahead of Izturis
Hey Hudson!
hit Soriano as much as you want!
Way to Go Cubbies!
Big start against Hudson towards 3-0 in the series.  No Smoltz tomorrow, things are definitely looking up.
I think I can say it ... finally.
OUR PATIENCE HAS BEEN REWARDED!  Keep it up, Cardiac Cubbies--this has been within you all year!

LRRF

true!!
our suffering during the first two months should be gone. Shows how passionate us fans are, eh?
This just all
seems so crazy to me. The way they are playing now compared to how they were playing a little over a week ago.
it's like Night and Day
Baserunning, early leads, clutch hitting, patience, it's almost a total 180
I think
I need to pinch myself.
please don't
cause if this is your dream, I don't want you to wake up
lol
OK I won't.
All this without ARam too
Amazing.
Derosa
I love Mark....he should be playing everyday from now on!!!
So far we've got Pop....
Marquis
love to see a shutdown 1st inning by him. Here's hoping.
Just don't walk anybody
 Make 'em hit it Jason!!!
ahh
could have had a nice inning ending dp
Juuussst a bit outside!
WP Marquis. Oddly enough it actually wasn't Barrett's fault.
lol
Oh I don't know about that...I think Barrett could've dove for that one!!!
i think
jones is gunna get the best of marquis here, keep battling though
Walking Jones here
 Wouldn't be the worst thing.

Don't groove him a FB

Like that
 oyy boyyy

Long way from over ain't it.

yep...
i was right
Well, this won't be easy.
4-2.
damn...
it's ok, that's what Jones does
Especially against Marquis
Jones hits fastballs as good as any player I've ever seen.

He can't hit anything off speed, yet pitchers continue to throw him fastballs. Especially throwing him a fastball with a 3-2 count and first base open is dumb.

not the best choice of pitch
by Marquis but it's nice when our pitchers make a mistake and they have a lead to back them up
he is now
8-10 with 5 HR's against Marquis, ouch...
If it wasn't for the early warning
That pitch would of gone in Jone's ribcage, probably...
Cmon Jason
 Pull it together mannn!!!

Marquis
change speeds.
Settle down Jason.
Let's go.
I hope Marquis
settles in the next inning. Let's get those bats going again Cubs!!
Yep ...
He's making me worried.  So's that damn warning ... why can't we fight fair?
Things seem
to be a little intense out there. The ump isn't going to let things get out of hand.
Andruw Jones...
Is singlehandedly keeping the Braves afloat.
E Marquis
 not a good start.

If Lee isn't 6'6 that ball is still rolling.

6'5
245 pounds.  not too much of a difference but someone asked me that yesterday, and thats what i told them.  then i looked it up and i was right...
Z
Caught picking his nose.  Hot.
every time
they show z he's he's got his fingers in either his nose or his mouth.
Marquis doesn't have anything tonight
everything is flat flat flat and up up up....not a good combo for you kids at home.
Hudson
Looks locked in now, too.  He just has that look to him.
Unless
He always looks pissed off.
gallagher
warming up already?
That's what...
...long relief is for.
Gallagher up...
...in the 'pen.
Gallagher warming up
Good call by Lou...Marquis looks like crapola.
Jeez
Marquis hasn't been hitting any of his spots.
Looks like Al is gonna get to see Gallagher
 Very soon.
Tied
Thanks to Marquis for blowing it.
This is
second half 06 Marquis.
Nice
Pitches around W Harris and grooves a fastball to Renteria.
Gallagher
looks like he'll get his first shot tonight. Marquis doesn't have anything right now.
Oh man!
Marquis is just getting OWNED out there!!
and now
He's just getting BENCHED!
bye bye Jason
Thata way to pitch with a lead...douche bag.
Boy . . . .
All that run support....down the drain
So that's the Marquis
The Cardinal fans were telling us about.
Yuck, yuck, yuck and yuck
May the Baseball Gods smile....
...on the Irishman....Sean Gallagher
heres my boy ive been wantin to see
Now pitching, Sean Gallagher, #36.
With Gallagher warming up.
Woulda like to see Andruw Jones take a fastball right in the grill.
Good point

I hope
Gallagher can keep this under control.
THIS INNING
You CAN put on LOU!

WHY THE FUCK does he let MArquis pitch to Jones AGAIN???

Goddamn it!!!

He had ZERO tonight, and was completely obvious to everyone.

Yeah, I was surprised ...
As well.  Why the hell did they go after Jones other than he can't spell his first name right?

Argh!  6-4!

Marquis's done
not a good outing...

it doesn't seem that bad...a few weeks ago, different story...but higher confidence in this team of late

93 mph fastball
and a sharp 12-6 curve on the 1st 2 pitches
Looks like he's got a good curve
Now do you know if he has a good change up? If so, then he could be a keeper.
The Cubs offense
needs to really work the counts now against Hudson.  Even if they can't score again, they need to get in to that taxed bullpen.
shit
No, no, no, no!!
Just serving up RBI's in two strike counts! Come on, Sean!
they are only up by 2
OK, Time to break this one open for the Cubbies.
If this rejuvenated offense is for real, we shouldn't be denied the W tonight. And Gallagher can hopefully lose the butterflies and settle down nicely in the 3rd.
It's only the 3rd inning?
Wow this thing could go over 3 hours
Good hit for Derrek
let's get this one going.
Now's a moment when I really wish
ARam was in the lineup
Nice D Lee
I'd love to see Hudson get rocked here.
another nice ab for Lee
let's make Hudson work again and go deep into counts...get him outta here as quick as possible. He's looking like he's settled down despite the hit to Lee.
Barrett
needs to go opposite field and stop trying to pull everything.
Good break!!!
And they're at the corners!
haha
e-5
here come the Cubs!
classic
jock jones
whew...
terrible throw by Hudson.  Nice couple of breaks there.
yesss
Best of both worlds....run scored and Hudson got nailed!!!!

 Retaliation!!! wtg Jones wtfg

YEAH!!
You just get the feeling this is our night. Poetic justice for Hudson.
heads up running by Lee
hahaha
 Karma's a bitch Timmy boy!!!!
I liked....
D-Lee's little twister move to avoid the tag.
Must be a great dancer.....
hmmm....
getting into their bullpen again
Their pen...
could be spent by tomorrow.  Hopefully we can go to work on their callup, because they may have to leave him in for a while anyway tomorrow.
their pen
won't have much in the tank for tomorrow, if they need to go to it.

This guy pitching, Moylan threw some innings yesterday as well, probably won't be in long

Yup, that's what I said...
this is a golden opportunity to wear them out today, and set up a good situation for tomorrow.
Hopefully that's
a good thing for the Cubs.
In a weird sorta way...
JJ exacts revenge on Hudson.
Yeah...
if you can't throw at a pitcher, just hit him with a hard grounder instead.
Is Brenley reading this blog ?
what'd he say...
try and tune these guys out as much as possible
about Karma and payback
we just had a flurry of comments with such remarks and Bob says the same almost verbatim
that was
CLASSIC "Jock" Jones
Don't like the bunt
Come on let Mark hit here...he ain't used to bunting.
For those of us not watching the game on tv
What did Jones do to Hudson?
come backer
that nailed Hudson on the calf or achilles, somewhere in the lower leg
Hit a rocket back up the middle
and hit Hudson in the calf.
hard groundball off Hudson's lower leg..
resulted in a bad throw home by Hudson
Earth to WGN
there's a man on second.
they must have
heard me
Fucking Barrett
 What a fucking bonehead
barrett
sucks balls
Where was Quade?
yeah he should know better
He should've tackled Barrett. He should know by now.
Wow just Wow!!!
Barrett where is your head at?
not a smart move Barrett
he dogged it figuring there was a double play
Didn't look like he dogged it...
he took a huge turn, running hard like he was gonna go for home.  Really strange.
And REALLY dumb...
I honestly can't tell what he thought he was doing.  Maybe he thought he'd catch them napping?  Just a dumb dumb play.
I just meant
that he was paying attention, he should have been more in tuned with what was going on
oops
WASN'T paying attention
"not a smart move Barrett"
He is one of the dumbest catchers I can possibly recall for the Cubs, and I have been watching them since 1967.
He didn't dog it
but he did screw it up again. I couldn't tell if Quade tried to hold him up. It almost looked like he threw his hands down in disgust.
Yeah...
it looked like Barrett was on his own there.

I think he was saving Izturis the embarrassment of not coming through with a 2-out hit.

I kid!  I kid!

I just thought
it seemed like he figured it was a double play and if he just kept running, nothing would happen since there would be three outs.  I guess I should say he dogged it from a physical stand point, more like he dogged it mentally
If I had to guess...
I'm thinking he was thinking "if Fontenot is safe, I'm going to try to sneak in here while they're not paying attention."  That's just a guess though.
very true
but god know what the hell is going on in Barrett's head
Barrett
It looked like Lou was going to go "Big Z" on Barrett's ass!!

I hope someone else on the team beats him up soon.

Silliest comment
of the night.
good hustle by Fontenot though
did he even take a peek
at the coach or the play before he rounded 3rd?  take him out and trade him to the other dugout for a used rake and somebackwashed gatorade...
Good Idea, but
the Braves said they wouldn't part with the rake.

I'm thinking Barrett straight-up for used Gatorade is a good deal.

Wasted...
good hustle by Fontenot.  Of course Izturis was up next, so the run wasn't likely to score anyway.
Quade ....
was not in Barrett's sight line, because Barrett should not have had to take the time to look.  Quade was not in position.
Quade looked...
like he was in position.  He was well down the 3rd base line, like he's supposed to be.  Couldn't see what he was signaling though.
quade was not in position
barrett needs to see him when he's coming into third. quade was down by home plate.
Quade was about 1/3 down the line...
that's where he's supposed to be.  That way, when Barrett rounds, he sees the coach.  He's not supposed to be standing at 3rd base.
no
he was well past halfway down the line. thats out of position.
How can you possibly tell that?
All you can tell is that he was down the line from third (not in the camera when Barrett rounded third).  He comes into view as Barrett gets about 1/3 of the way home.  Therefore, I'd guess he was in the right spot.

Either way, I don't think this one was on Barrett.  Barrett didn't appear to be looking for a sign there.

he shoulda made
contact with mccann.  maybe mccann woulda gotten made and jacked him in the face.  then the braves would clear their bench only to find that the cubs left barrett out to rott.
that
was totally on quade, who is almost, but not quite as bad as wendell kim. he was nowhere near third base, and barrett would have no way of knowing that fontenot beat out the throw to keep the inning going.

quade sucks.

He's not supposed to be...
near third base.  He's supposed to be up the line, so that when Barrett rounds third, he can see the coach.  That's where Quade was.
he was close
to the line but past halfway to the plate. he should be off the line and maybe 1/3 of the way down. he wasn't close to being in position--if he was, he would've put the stopsign on.

if you were correct about where he was, why did barrett keep running? exactly.

Yeah...
Of course Barrett SHOULD have been aware that a DP MIGHT NOT happen and, as such, shouldn't have his stupid ass half-way down the 3rd base line.

Oh wait, that would mean we expect him to play (and act) like a professional...my bad.

Ah, the cardinal sin...
don't walk the pitcher, Sean.  Let's get this out.
How many innings have gone by? Sheesh
Long game
lets go
gally!
Hits the pitcher...
and doesn't get tossed??  WTF?

this guy's zone sucks and now he doesn't even take control of the game.

time for Gally to plunk someone

It's all about intent...
not result.  The pitcher wasn't trying to hit the other team's pitcher there.  Especially not with a breaking ball.
why ....
does everyone insist that you can't "intend" to hit someone w/ a breaking ball?  it is the oldest defense in the book, "I didn't mean to hit him, I mean, look I threw a breaking ball."  Tired old crap.

You hit the opposing pitcher in that spot b/c:

  1. he's a rookie
  2. he's slow on the bases
Why do possibly think...
he was trying to hit Gallagher?  That's just ludicrous.  It's not like there was any context for wanting to hit the pitcher.

I know it sucks, but think it through.  It's not like Gallagher (or the Cubs) have done anything tonight to cause them to intentionally HIT THE PITCHER!!!

You're right...
this game isn't being played w/ a little tension.  I mean, it's not like we've seen a pitcher intentionally hit a guy in this game.

Good point.

That's some poor logic...
you're using there.  By your logic, WE'D be the ones retalliating.  Not them.

Think about it: the Braves' pen is in dire straits, and they've already been warned.  They need Moylan to go a lot of innings.  Why would he risk getting tossed to hit a pitcher who's done nothing to warrant the opposing team's ire?

You're letting your emotions get in the way of your reasoning.

WTF
THAT WAS INTENTIONAL...
No it wasn't...
why on earth would he intentionally hit Gallagher?  Especially with a breaking ball...
lol did
bob just throw a shot at roger clemens.
tso the Braves
get to plunk 2 batters?!

uh..this is kinda crap

soriano
will make him pay... if not we got pie...
The ump
got after Lou. This is ridiculous.
Yeah...
the ump knows he blew the call on the warning, and I think he's on edge now because of it.

He made the right call on the last HBP though.

Cubs have problems against the side-armers
3 bad calls that inning
Called 3 on Izturis.
Strike 2 on Soriano.
Called 3 on Pie.

Wow.  This ump is getting old real quick.

that last pitch was three inches off the plate
does this ump have a grudge against the Cubs?
He must cause
that pitch was not a strike.
gallagher has to be careful
if he loses one pitch and it hits a batter, hell be gone and hell have alot of time to spend with lou for the rest of the game in the clubhouse, cause i bet he'll go too...
Any chance
Barrett can just hit the deck and Gallagher can hit Tschida square in the onions with a fastball.  That good-for-nothing ignorant prick.  Seems to me like some of these umps might not give the Cubs calls because Lou is their manager.  Hate to think that's the case, but it's possible.
come on Sean
Brenley is getting ready to fight
I think Brenly's
about to head down and duke it out with the umps!  Love to hear that!
YES!!!
Jones is hurt???
It's only his first outing, BUT
I think Gally is going to fit right in with this bullpen!
Gallagher
is getting hit pretty hard...

and JJ might be hurtin

I hope
JJ is ok.
yeah...
I might not want him in the lineup but not like that
Sean's getting his ass kicked
We are gonna need a lot of runs
Don't think we are gonna pull this one out.
Not that I don't think we can score 5 or 6 more runs against the Braves bullpen.

But, I don't think the umps are going to allow it.  Gallagher's pitches are the same spots as the Braves' but his are called balls.  So he can't throw in or he gets tossed, he can't throw outside because they are all balls.  See where this is going?

yeah, not to point fingers
but the Ump has honestly handled this game pretty poorly
And that's why he's Cesar Izworthless!
i know
just hit it on the ground and we get another run. ughhh
Only 4 more months...
of his sorry ass on the roster.  unless we make the playoffs of course - then it's 5 more months.
cant wait
to see him gone
Renteria
Why didn't we go after Renteria for our SS.  Boston didn't want him.
20/20 hindsight
what can ya do
He's been surprising this year...
there's a reason Boston didn't want him - he stunk last year for them.

Also, we were paying Izturis $4+ million to "play SS," and adding another high-dollar SS (who many thought may have been over the hill) didn't seem like a good idea.

I will say that Renteria is exactly the type of guy Hendry has generally gone after, though.

Scott Eyre
you sir have to go, I don't care where I just don't want to see you ever again!
Pie...
has been a much needed spark plug for this team
Jones
is a vacuum out there...man
as in...
he sucks?  no, he doesn't suck, but he certainly is below average in center field.  washed up and fat.  good for an occasional a dinger and not much more.
lol
yeah, he is a defensive liability in center for the braves, should probably hang it up
Nice assist by Soriano
Let's face it...
As I said earlier - this loss is on Lou.

Marquis should have been out of there before Andruw Jones 2nd AB.

Rothschild, should be out of there for good.

This is a very
long game. I'm almost asleep. Let's get those bats going Cubs.
Tough task for the Cubs
To come back against Escobar.

We'll see. Couple runners, walks and hits we're back in it.

I call the Sorinao beaning BTW, Last night's game thread.

DeRosa=Grudzelanick (sp)
Come on Izzy
gotta give up this game
gotta look towards tomorrow where it should be a win...
Scott Eyre
He took off his glove and wiped down the ball on almost every pitch.

Is he wearing womens underwear?

Sounds like Bob
has a foot fetish
Yeah it did sounds as though
I do, I liked the pink toes.
dp
Another grounder at some one please.
Close call
Harris runs like he's on fire!
Renteria has had a game
He'll cool off though.
Get Jones out
Work on Wickmen
We have the order in our favor
If the Cubs can get men on, I see a good chance to make them nervious.
Come on "riot
Shrek is on TBS
out #27
The hardest to get in Baseball
a spark!
let's get it going
Start the marry-go-round.
Game
Time of death 10:15 ESt
can't win em all
We just need to come back tomorrow and rip into the call-up
agreed.
too bad about all those unearned runs, but 3 of 4 would be great.

see you tomorrow.

Throw it away
and let's win the series tomorrow!
Not what I wanted
for tonight but tomoorow will be a new day. We'll get em then.
"tomorrow"
I'm going to bed. See you tomorrow.
Cards lose, Brewers winning
1-0 in the 7th
Man this one is tough for me
4 runs off Hudson in the 1st, especially after he hit Alf. Marquis is the one I put this on, sure everyone could see he had nothing,(i hate that by the way, why does a pitcher get to say "i just didn't have it tonight"?) but he's got to go deeper than that. More bad base running and will somebody please wake Derrek Lee up! That being said a win tomorrow will cap a fantastic road trip.
Cordero just blew the save!
Rangers tie it at 3 with 3 in the 9th off Cordero.  Rangers still batting!
RANGERS WIN!!!!
4 in the 9th off of Cordero!  Rangers 4, Brewers 3 Hey, at least something went our way tonight!
brewers
just lost .  . . :)
Thank You Rangers!
Cordero hadn't given up a run in months, and now this, 4 in 2/3 of an inning.
happiness
Still exists.  5 back.  Should've won tonite!!!!
BUT, if we win tomorrow, I'm feeling good.
