Bleed Cubbie Blue

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Astros, Monday 8/6, 7:05 CT

It's official:

The Chicago Cubs today placed outfielder Alfonso Soriano on the 15-day disabled list with a right quad strain. In corresponding roster moves, Chicago has selected infielder Eric Patterson from Triple-A Iowa and designated infielder Brian Dopirak, currently at Single-A Daytona, for assignment. In addition, pitcher Wade Miller has been placed on waivers to grant his unconditional release.

Patterson will wear uniform No. 3 and looks to make his major league debut tonight in Houston when the Cubs face the Astros at 7:05 p.m. CT.

Ah, Wade, we hardly knew ye. Nor did we really want to. On to tonight's game.

The Cubs haven't played in the Juice Box in Houston for almost a year -- the last Cubs game there was on August 16, 2006, the storybook start of Ryan O'Malley. That entire series was memorable, a Cub sweep: a 3-0 shutout anchored by Carlos Zambrano and an 18-inning win with Rich Hill getting the win in relief were the other two games.

Much has changed for the Cubs since then; even after that sweep they were sixteen games under .500. Meanwhile, the Astros have played poor baseball all year, though better at home (28-25) than on the road (20-38, the worst road record in the NL).

Tonight's Astros starter epitomizes that record. After a disappointing homestand, I'd like to see the Cubs go at least 4-3 on this trip, while the Brewers are going 3-4 (or better yet, 2-5).

vs. Hou -- vs. Cubs
Wandy Rodriguez looks like the second coming of Roger Clemens in his prime when he's pitching at home: 6-2, 1.76. The Astros have won Wandy's last four home starts dating back to June 15. But, Houston is on a downward spiral right now: they've lost five of their last seven, and Rodriguez has a 2-4, 6.09 lifetime mark vs. the Cubs, including getting pounded hard by Derrek Lee (6-for-9, 2 doubles, 2 HR, five walks), Matt Murton (4-for-11, 2 HR), and in very-small-sample-size-bites, Ryan Theriot (2-for-3, 1 HR), and Angel Pagan (1-for-2, a HR).

In addition to the relief appearance in the 18-inning game mentioned above, Rich Hill has one other career relief appearance against Houston. This will be his first start against the Astros; only Brad Ausmus (1-for-1) has had a hit off him.

Today's game is cable-only in both home markets, so check the Mediacenter.

Wade Miller
I thought he could have been a better pitcher and help this team out. He is just Prior 2.0 apparently.
So now that Dopirak is DFA'd...
what happens to him?
Options
can be traded, sent down to minors, or just released
Minors?
He already is in the minors - in single A.  A trade is a possibility, but being released outright is extremely unlikely for Dopirak.
What happens...
He gets placed on waivers, and any team can claim him.

If he clears waivers, he stays with the Cubs but is no longer on the 40 man roster.

But doesn't everyone love this?
You read about a player two or three years earlier and wonder when they will reach the majors and finally they do! Same with Pie and Guzman.
Agreed.
It'll be fun to finally get a look at E-Patt after hearing so much about him this year. This part of the year does make baseball fun, when you get to see the new guys everyone's talked about. I hope E-Patt lives up to all of it! The Cubs could use a pick-me-up like that...
August 2006
My former boyfriend - an Astro's fan - broke up with me on my B-day, 4 days before that 2006 series.  And my Great, Wonderful Cub team kicked his team's ass !!!   Just another reason I love the Cubs..
Good to see you are not bitter. :)
Yeah, although Cub Nation
was totally bummed over 2006, I was so proud because of that series !!!!
What an ass
that guy had to be to break up with you on your birthday.  When it's over it's over, but he should at least have the decency to get you a gift and break up a couple days later.  I hope you rubbed the sweep in his face just a little.

I once had a girl tell me she was seeing someone else on Valentine's day after I had already made plans for us.  Ouch...

What time do we usually get lineups....
I am pretty curious for tonights
I don't think EPatt will start
Think it'll be the same ole' guys out there in R/L fields.
True
But Patterson's team played a day game and the Cubs players finished a Sunday night game around 10:00pm.  That's not quite like having to rest Aramis on day games following night games, but still it's something to consider.
Good point
Maybe we'll see him in a pinch hitting role, just to get his feet wet.
I suspect you're right...
I expect we see Theriot and Fontenot batting 1/2, and some combination of Floyd/Murton/DeRosa/Pagan in RF and LF.

I hope I'm wrong, as I'd like to see what the kid can do.  But Lou has a tendency to be tight with the PT for youngsters, so I wouldn't be shocked if Patterson is relegated to bench duty.

Floyd/Murton/DeRosa/Pagan
Hopefully we get all four
I read the write up of the Cubs/Mets game
in the LA Times today.  It was the Newsday (actually Ny Newsday, I'm sure) wire.  The article was 20% devoted to how the Mets scored and 80% devoted to quotes about Glavine.  Nothing about Soriano and his key (from the Cub's standpoint) injury.  Typical NY-centric coverage of a game.

I couldn't help but think this was fitting coverage of this game.  Maybe this will have the nice "Karma" impact on the Cubs that we need in that (a) our new lead-off hitter and call up will spark this team and (b) Soriano's late season return will haunt the Mets.

As Cub fans, all we can do is hope.  This just adds to my dislike of the Mets and the "the world revolves around me" NY media.

Well...
... I hate to tell you, but Glavine winning 300 is a MUCH bigger deal than Soriano getting injured.
Yes, it is.
But you'd think an injury to a star player making as much money as Soriano is would at least rate a mention.
The same unfortunate omission...
happened on the story on the Ap wire that appeared today in a lot of papers aound the country.
Well duh...
But to have 25 paragraphs on Glavine and zero on Soriano's injury, was classic NY coverage.  Don't apologize unless you read the lousy article.
Well...
... lets see.  It was an article by a NY paper, about a player on a NY team, reaching one of the most impressive milestones in modern baseball.

What do you expect?

Few people around the country care that Soriano hurt his quad.

The LA Times...
...is a New York paper?
Read?
Did you read the original comment?  Or the article?

The article was not written by an LA Times reporter.  It was written by a Newsday reporter.   The LA Times just picked it up off the wire.

The Tribune
should have intervened!
There were many elements
...to this game. The most important was Glavine's 300th victory and most writers covered that angle.
But also Kerry Wood made his season debut. And this was important to Cub fans.
Soriano getting hurt was the top angle for Cub fans. I think Lou put Kerry into the game to give the fans something to cheer about.
Then what about the plate umpire who got smacked in the face with a foul ball? That was kind of an unusual event.
Both
the LA Times and Newsday are owned, like the Cubs, by the Tribune Corporation.

The Tribune has fired a ton of reporters and told them to just run crap from other Tribune-owned papers instead because it's cheaper.

It's also a big reason why I cancelled my subscription.  The Tribune took a great newspaper and turned it into a piece of mediocre crap.

I'd like to say they did the same for the Cubs, but the Cubs were godawful terrible before the Trib bought them.

That's how bad the Cubs were under the Wrigleys.  The Tribune made them better.

There was a very extensive
"Front Line" report that aired on PBS this past season dealing with the a local LA businessman trying to wrest it from the Tribune - as you know, this did not pan out unfortunately.
That's how it works
The AP has been running multiple stories about "the milestone chase" that has been going on recently. The story about the game in which Bonds hit his 755th home run was focussed on the homer, mainly. The story about the game in which A-Rod hit his 500th HR, more about the homer than the game... I'm not saying it's the best thing in the world, but many times the reporter is looking for an angle, something to separate the game from countless other game stories. Thus, the coverage on the milestone. It wasn't that remarkable a game, was it? Can you blame the writer for making the story about Glavine? I don't think it's NY-centricism, in either the piece you are referring to or the AP story, it's just looking for the "big story" and focusing on it. Sells papers.
"Dopirate"
It's sad about Dopirak - when he was playing in Spring Training last year, every time they called his name, people did kept doing the Pirate 'garrrr'. That would have been fun for a bit at the big league level.  I guess it saves us from getting sick of it, though.
Jim Rose on ABC7 is....
a jerk.  On reporting about Soriano he states "basic tenent of going to the post season is to stay healthy - all great teams do".  So our local sports guy has basically considered the Cubs not a great team when we haven't even seen the result of these developments.
I would disagree
Completely. The best thing that good teams do is play THROUGH injuries. Every team gets them. It's just a question of which and how important the players that it happens to are and how the team as a whole plays through them and continues winning.
all great teams do?
does he not remember last year when pujols went on the DL and the cardinals won, or how the colts lost Bob Sanders, their best defensive safety, and still won the super bowl? i dont like local sports "experts", they all seem to lack in basic knowledge
He's just a terrible sports reporter
He sounds as if he hasn't watched a game in years
The Bears
The Bears lost their 2nd best player imo Tommie Harris and went to the Super Bowl.

Of course the defense played like swiss cheese in the super bowl and Peyton Manning had them for lunch while Grossman was losing his lunch but they made it.

yup
harris is an animal
I live in Texas
and cant tell you how much I HATE the Crapstros.  I hope we beat them silly tonight.  The bandwagon jumping got WAY out of control after 2005 and people I knew claiming to be Rangers fans were all the sudden Crapstros fans.  God, I hope we bludgeon them tonight.
And dont even get me started...
on their tittie baby tv broadcast crew.  UGH!!!
Um...
... that's an inappropriate comment. You may not like the Astros TV crew, but "tittie baby" is something I'd rather you not use here any more.

Thanks.

really?
I dont think its offensive at all.
Wow.
Really?
I could think of a million
worse things to call Hawk Harrelson.
That's nice to know.
Feel free to use all of them. Just don't do it here.
Why not call up Pie
I don't understand why they didn't call up Pie.  Is Patterson going to play CF?  He's a second baseman.
Don't we already have too many middle infielders between Theriot, Fontenot and Derosa?
He's a (BAD) second baseman
Fumbles, drops, E-4, E-4, E-4
Lineup...I just threw up on my shoe
Name AVG HR RBI SB
  1. R Theriot, SS .280 3 31 19
  2. R Cedeno, 2B .143 2 6 1
  3. D Lee, 1B .326 12 58 5
  4. A Ramirez, 3B .317 16 69 0
  5. M Murton, LF .254 1 10 1
  6. M DeRosa, RF .286 7 54 0
  7. A Pagan, CF .273 4 21 4
  8. J Kendall, C .267 0 4 0
  9. R Hill, P .128 0 3 0
Right handed lineup
 vs. the Houston lefty.
OY VEY!
On the bright side for the players, if this stinks, no one will be around to boo.
Just Noticed - Cedeno @ 2nd?!!!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I lost it on him when he avoided a hard slide on a steal attempt last year when he played against the Mets.

He was afraid, and instead of laying the glove there which beat the runner - he pulls out. Ugh!

OMG.

nice....
Those comments by Lee and Floyd still really buggin me...
You do know
the Astros are throwing a lefty tonight, right?

That seems like a pretty standard lineup for us without Soriano and with a lefty on the mound.   I might move Murton to #2 and bad CedeƱo lower, but batting Murton #5 makes sense too.

Yep. Agreed.
Murton at 5 I would feel much more comfortable with.
so batting the guy
with the .143 average in the 2 hole is the new secret to beating lefties?
I'm not that fond of Cedeno either.
But geez, the guy's on the roster. He was raking in AAA just like Soto and Murton and Pie and every other player everyone here seems to want recalled.

If he's on the roster, every now and then he should start. Tonight's a good time to do that vs. a LHP.

I imagine we'll see Patterson making several starts this roadtrip, perhaps as soon as tomorrow.

I'm not saying he shouldn't start
he just shouldn't bat in the 2 spot.  He's a mental error waiting to happen both in the field and on the base path (if he is able to get that far).
although his play in the field has nothing to do
with his spot in the lineup...
Oh, I agree...
... I wouldn't hit him 2nd, either. In that lineup, I'd hit Cedeno 8th and Kendall 2nd.

But maybe he'll surprise us tonight and play well.

Yes, I mean you. Stop snickering! ;)

id rather see pagan
in the 2-hole than cedeno.
What a strange lineup.
I hope it works.

phat

What did
Fontenot do to be held out of the lineup again?  Especially when he's a better fit in the 2-spot than Cedeno, and a better second baseman too!

We'd be better of shipping Cedeno to anywhere else...

Lou's employing an all RH lineup
vs. a LHP. Fonty's a LH, therefore, he sits tonight.
These all RH lineups against LH
pitchers are a big 0-??.  We have yet to produce a victory that I can recall with these all RH line ups.  I agree with Bob Brenley's thinking that the lefty pitcher can get too comfortable with hitting his spots without a couple of lefties mixed in.

The other thing I don't like is this leaves Lou with very few RH options off the bench late in the game when we need pinch hitters (and with R. Hill, we usually need a few pinch hitters).  I tend to not second-guess Lou and I hope this all RH line up FINALLY works against Wandy "You can't beat me at home" Rodriguez.

It would be nice to get this road trip off to a positive start!!

Fontenot's platoon splits:
Vs. Righties:

.339/.397/.504

Vs. Lefties:

.227/.265/.364

His splits against LHP's
are still 80 points higher than Cedeno's total.
ugly lineup.
if you're going to bring patterson up, at least put him in there instead of cedeno. if his defense is that bad, then why the hell bring him up. why not bring up the guy who can actually play defense, and play it better than our current guys (i.e. pie)?
I would assume....
...that with Patterson called up, we're going to see a lot of DeRosa in right, Floyd in left?
Bad idea ( DeRosa in RF)
I watched him in the OF in spring training and it is NOT his
strong suite. I would not play him there except in extreme situations.
This does seem like the most bizarre line up of the year
FYI
DeRosa has played...
...numerous games in RF since spring training for us. Kindof odd to evaluate him based on ST now.
Did you mean someone else?
Did you mean someone else perhaps?

DeRosa has played numerous times in RF.  He's no Andre Dawson but comports himself okay.

Oh I have seen since Spring Training
That was just where I got the feeling the OF was not for him
( except in pinch) I doubt it effected the game but he fielded poorly last night. He can make a few good plays but all things considered I would seriously prefer JJ or Floyd out there and I know that is scary.
Wandy Rodriguez scary
in the "Astrodome".

DIG This:

IP     H    R    ER    HR    BB    K     ERA        WHIP     BAA
66.2    48    13    13    4    14    56    1.76       0.93     .202

Pretty scary, here.

Wandy Rodriguez
is also an awesome human being who travels around the world in his spare time helping old ladies cross the street and giving them money.
After tonights start Wandy Rodriquez
Will single handedly repair the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis and it will be completed by his next start.

What a guy

The Virgin Islands had to change their name to
The Islands after being visited by Wandy.
Wandy
The secret is the Rex Grossman of the first 5 games of last season was Wandy in disguise.

But after that Wandy had to save the world and alas Rex stepped in.

HA HA!!
LOL!
I heard....
that Superman wears Wandy Rodriquez pajamas.
LOL!
I literally just laughed out loud. I am now getting weird looks from others in my office...
same here
I'm trying to explain it to my little kids who are asking why I'm laughing at the computer!

Kudos!

oh my, that is funny...
Thank god
this is the only lefty we'll see for awhile. jeebus, what a line-up...
Wandy
Wandy IS Chuck Norris in disguise.
No.
Wandy Rodriguez is Moses.
No.
Wandy Rodriguez is the reincarnation of the Enlightened Buddha and the representation to all mankind of the Hindu deity Vishnu--both in one single human form.
No.
Wandy Rodriguez is Max Power.
nice pull!
:)
HA!
I could be mistaken, but
wasn't that a Wandy Rodriguez BLIMP by Oak Street Beach, today?
No
wandy slams revolving doors
He once went to the Virgin Islands for a week.
Once he left, it was just called The Islands.
Umm..Sorry...
akcubfan used this one already.

Perhaps you are thinking of a DIFFERENT Wandy Rodriguez?

Someone
already told that joke.
Dang, didn't see it
Nevermind
Good news?
Out of the 24 games the Cubs play in August, 18 of them are against teams with worse records than the Cubs.
Lou on Soriano (on pre-game):
Got the results of the MRI

He is "walking normal";

He tore the "belly of the quad"

Trainer says out till "about Labor Day."

There is only one
move for the Cubs and that is to move forward and that needs to happen tonight. I have faith that they will too.

Rich needs to get his head in the game early and leave it there. Nice to see Matt get a chance and I hope he takes advantage of it.

GO CUBS!!!

cheers to that!
n/t
Agreed
I am so glad that DLEE is Tall and has the range of Spiderman.
Let's go Cubs !!!
astros lineup
i was just looking at the astros lineup tonite. they look kind of stocked. with wigginton at third now...even with everett and pence, this team looks like they might knock us around. hopefully rich proves me wrong...
I hope
you are being sarcastic.

They lead off with Biggio and Loretta. They've got Brad Ausmus and Jason Lane in the lineup.

With the pitcher, over half the lineup isn't anything worth worrying about.

ugh
MLB.TV is using the Houston feed
Prepare yourself
for 3 hours of sucktitude.  Im telling you these guys are one of the worst in the league.
They arent as bad as
I thought they would be.  So far praised Lee's bat and power, as well as his speed.

We'll see... I might switch to Ron and Pat.

Yeah, they're probably used
to their team being horribly hideous crap, but at the first of the year I really thought they would break down into tears.
Anyone want to look up Kendall's Avg
as a cub? im being lazy
.267 with 45 ABs
n/t
Thanks
much appreciated
Cedeno -- speed
I like it.  I want more of it.
Hooked on speed
Happend to me too
atta way ronnie
1st to 3rd baby

lets get em early!

Ramirez has been really impatient lately.
What a terrible AB by Rammy.
That was not good at all.
I was at the grocery store,..
and didn't have my Supersaver card.  Wandy Rodriguez showed up with his, and saved me $1.88!!
well off to a great start again
why the hell cant our useless players like ohman or cedeno tear a quad
What would have been different
about that inning if Soriano had played?
We would be up 1-0
after a Sori solo shot.
Wishful thinking
n/t
I'm sorry we can't all live
in a life of self induced depression.
You mean like
the ledge-jumpers who have been in abundance around here since the Soriano injury?
There is
no guarantee that would happen.
rodriguez would have
struck out the side, that's what
Game is off to a bad start
we just got 4 outs versus a horrible pitcher with the top of our lineup and couldn't score

additionally this ump looks like he has a small strike zone especially on the breaking pitches, so that does not bode well for Rich Hill.

On that note the game can start horribly as long as it ends positively with a cubs win, here's hoping for a turn around

Wandy is like Koufax at home.
Look it up.
why is it that our pitchers always seem to throw
so many damn balls, just let your defense do the work, make them earn it
where the heck
is the strike zone?
and the Walkapalooza starts from Hill
gonna be on pace for another 30 pitch start
from the headcase
Ron really
sounds like he's going to blow a gasket about the umpires.

phat

i really hope we pick it up this month for ronnie
he could use it
Yes.
n/t
OK guys
now let's get those bats going.
nice inning rich!
lets go cubs
in light of ohman sucking horribly
anyone know how cotts has been doin at iowa?  last time i heard he was doin terrible, but maybe its changed?
I don't think its a mistake
that we keep recalling Cherry.
nicely played off the wall
n/t
Murton played that well
It's weird how small that field appears.
It's like a Little League park.
kendall....
0-24
on the replay
the runner stole that on Hill
thats fair
but we've allowed 24 SBs in the 15 games (15th tonight) that Kendall has been catching...

we've never had that kind of rate with anyone else catching even Barrett who was always lambasted for his poor defense

You're right
n/t
El Kabong
just kills us.
carlos lee stealin' bags on us?
wtf?
How much longer til Ronnie makes
an error? Doesnt have one yet, I think I would ve already lost a bet.
Good catch by murton
looks like the posting has slowed tonight....
surprised with a road game
WTF? Where is our left fielder
who bunny hops and plays that catch on a hop?
You aint getting that past Lee
nice D that inning!
c'mon cubbies put some on the board!
atta Riot!
lets go!
i guess a bunch of people hopped off the bandwagon
there's no one here tonight

lets go ronnie, right here!

Hell yeah
Riot in the house! God I love that kid. He's fast becoming my favorite Cub.
And then
Steals third! Woohooo
woohoo Riot!!!
God I love that
little Cajun.
neat story about Theriot's DeRosa bats
Story
I missed the Theriot-DeRosa story.  What was the jist?
GHOST OF BARRETT!!!
Nice 2b from The Riot
Now at third, lets go Cedeno.
Nice
phat
gosh...
0-2 2 K's with runners on 3rd and 1 out

c'mon boys

NOT AAA
Cedeno!
UGH
UGH. Screw you, Ronnie.
Someone posted Fontenot's splits against LHP
which are still 80 points higher than Cedeno's whole avg.
Come on
DLEE get her done!
Nice AB Ronny
Not much has changed with you has it?
Fonty would have brought Theriot home
But he's sitting in the dugout.  Those Cajun kids don't strike out very much.
You know it!!
3-0 count?
REALLY? Lord.
Cedeno feelin'
the Brees
Well, the problem tonight isn't the top two
It's not getting in the runner from third with fewer than two outs.

The middle of the order hasn't done its job.

Cardinals just dropped a 10-spot
on the Pads. May be able to gain some ground in the wildcard tonight.
Please stop
counting the chickens...
No chickens
counted. That is why I used the word MAY.
It was more of an observation than anything else.
im likin this whole not making contact twice
with a runner at third and less than 2 outs, no way we can afford to miss these opportunities without soriano in the lineup
Rodriguez the Invincible
has been in trouble every inning.

We are going to HAVE to break through!

No Excuse!

We are not putting our hits together
We need to change that. 49 pitches for Wandy thru 3 ip, we need to get to their bullpen.
Soriano
has a small tear in his quad.

He's out until Labor Day.

Actually, that isn't bad news
Labor Day is four weeks from today, no?
Going to the game on Labor day.
Hopefully we will be in first and be getting a fresh Soriano back for the stretch run.
Bad, Josh
It could be longer as well...

OH WELL! Minor Leaguers will have to come through.

Yes
it could be worse.  It's a month and he'll be back for the final stretch.

It's not the best-case scenario.  It's also not the worst.

We Hope
The problem is that the quad is one of the major foundations of all hitting and running.  Merely being back may not be enough.   The question is whether he will be hampered the rest of the year.
How has that injury
affected Mauer and Texieria, both of whom were out about the same amount of time with it?
rich is throwing the ball well
lets get him some runs
It's a matter of time
before the Cubs get to Wandy, I think
Hill pitching well...
Now cubs need some hitting...although it's tough when there are 2 automatic outs at the 2nd and fifth spots in the order.
Lets get on the board
fellas
so maybe he is 75% by
September 20th....

Gotta find ways to win without him. He wont be a 100% contributor again until '08

Ramirez has to be due for a HR soon
was it just me or did it just
Look like A Ram hurt his knee again when he hit first base????
Of all the Cubs "Stars"
Soriano is the one we'll miss least, imo - I mean in the context of you have to lose DLEE, Sori, Big Z, Lilly, or Jason Kendall (I had to add that), then Sori is the one that is the least valuable among the group.
no question
He is "replacable".. Z, Lee, Lilly, Marmol and A Ram are not at this point in the season.
I guess I
consider DeRosa a star the way he has played this season so far. We would defintely miss him.
And more valuable to this point
than any the Cubs will run out there in his place.
Kendall knows a walk here isn't acceptable right?
Neither is swinging at a pitch
over his head.
but striking out swinging at bad pitches is?
He has a better chance of hitting a bad pitch
Than Hill does of hitting one right down the middle.

As I typed this Hill K looking on 3 pitches.  He put a period on my point.

And what a ridiculous
point it was.
Flame me all you want.
I'm right.  Walking in the 8 spot with any Cubs pitcher but Zambrano behind you and 2 out is not a high percentage play.  In fact, the Astros probably preferred it.
They are starting to layoff that nasty
curve...its good, but its not landing in the zone..

The hits will follow

Except Hill is now AB
Im calling a GS by Hill
Come on Rich!!!
wow
The bat does move Rich...
Come on Rich!
Come on!

phat

Hey Rich
Try taking the bat off your shoulder next, the  bases were juiced!
Cant hit the ball with out swinging the bat
You could see that coming
a mile away.

Too many guys LOB tonight so far. The next two half-innings will reveal a lot.

You see why Kendall talking a walk wasn't good?
He didn't even swing.
phat
Rich Hills AB
with the bases loaded rich hill couldnt even attempt to swing??  that was the worst AB i think i've ever seen.  I mean, yeah hes a pitcher, but didnt he have to lear to hit in little league or high school?  Oh well, almost as frustrating as ronnie c-crap-o's AB with the riot at 3rd.
Trying to just look at the bright side
71 pitches thru 4 for Wandy and their bullpen sucks.  We will break through, they are just making us wait.
This offense.is very bleak..
After last season's debacle I did not expect to see a line up that has Murton, Cedeno, Pagan as starters. This is sad
Seriously.
its like the AAA iowa all star team vs. the astros.  Luckly the astros are horrible.  Lets pull out D-lee and put in E-Pat.
and you want to put a dent into our hopes
of scoring tonight?
The hits with RISP
are now alluding us...
Making us wait
kinda like that whole championship thing.
Now its 1-0.
I hope Hill doesn't break apart this time.
We should have signed C Lee.
It didn't even sound like he got all of that
I thought he hit it off the end of the bat.
Saddling up?
That how people talk in Texas? "I'm fixin to saddle up and mosey down to 7-11 and wrassle me a big gulp."
wow.
hill's sharp tonite. he didn't even crack after that homer. that's a huge plus.
If they do not score
against the Invincible Rodriguez, then they deserve the L.
What is that long fly ball thing called?
When it leaves the field of play.  Like Carlos Lee did. The Astros announcers called that a "home run".  I don't remember those.  Do we do those things too?
this game is far from over
n/t
4 innings, 6 LOB already
c'mon guys.
THIS IS A LEADOFF HITTER
LOU!!

Get it?

Why bat Cedeno 2nd and Murton 5th...
they are bound to come up with runners on base, and we have all seen the outcomes...just messed up. Oh, and Aramis is swinging at everything because he knows he won't see very many strikes with Murton behind him.
its incredible
that its Murtons fault for Aramis striking out too

wow...

I could have
sworn Matt had a single his last at bat.
Positive of Soriano's Injury
I hope Theriot tears up the lead-off spot and Lou decides to move Soriano to 5th when (if) he comes back.
Someone call it -
double, FO, or BB?
MY BAD!!
GO and RBI - COOL!
Hooof a single to our rescue..
All right
I'll 'em any way we can get 'em.
Is it asking too much to have Cedeno
move him along...

PLEASE!!!!

Carlos Lee
90 freakin' RBI's

Sheesh!

According to Miller of ESPN
isn't he on the Cubs now? :-)
I don't know about that...
but how about that huge hand for TOM GLAVINE?
4-0 ROCKIES
Let's just concentrate
on Cubs/'Stros...

Rich Hill

we are in a pennant race...
it is august...

if we're not scoreboard watching now when are we

September
buehler
buehler??

no one's excited about the brew crew being down 4 already???

where did everyone go

Go Rox !!
Lets take care of our business first and let Rox take care of those brewers, which they will.
I'm excited about that.
Absolutely, now is the time to start scoreboard watching. It's the reason I've posted the Brewers Gameday links.

It's nice to have meaningful games to play -- and to watch -- in August, isn't it?

BTW - THANKS
for the BREW Gameday links, Al!

It is great to be able to peak every now and then.

I'm a little too tired
to get too excited about anything today.

phat

This is truly small ball, but I'll take it.
About as small as it gets,
huh?

When was the last Cubs HR?

Anyone know what is now a trivia question?

Nevermind -
I was at the game when DLEE hit it last week...
Rich Hill looks much better
when he is able to locate that fast ball and when attacks the hitters rather than trying to get cute and nibble the K Zone.
Whats up with all those bloops from the Astros
Are they now trying to copy our small ball?
Shot of Hendry on CSN...
BUT HE'S NOT ON THE PHONE!
just a thought..
i know i'm a newbie and all..and my opinion matters not...but it seems like there's a tremendous amount of negativity on this board. i understand it's frustrating to lose, to get knocked back out of first, to have shaky pitching, soriano's injury, etc....but a lot of you blast cedeno and murton every at-bat. murton's not a bad player. not at all. somebody even blasted him after he singled in his last ab. i think both of these guys have some potential. moreover, i guess i just don't like all the fighting going on here. it's fine if it's constructive arguing...i just hate to see fellow cubs fans at each others' throats.

sorry to be so long-winded. that said, hill is pitching well tonite and that makes me incredibly happy.

Good post
and welcome aboard. Don't let the barbarians get you down. :)
Welcome to planet earth..my friend..
Get used to it.
All walks of life, personalities, education, etc.. post here which gives this board nice diversity. My philosophy if you don't like negative posts, don't read them or just ignore them. :)
This negativity
is mild compared to earlier in the season. Some on here do hate Matt but I am not one of them. I try to not be critical of any of the players. They all have off nights.
Exactly.
To the newbie above, welcome, and indeed you should be glad you started now instead of April.

It's a much nicer time to be a Cubs fan.

First of all, your oprinion matters as much as
everyone else's (except Joe's!).

There are people on BCB who run as hot and cold on players as the faucet in your kitchen.  You'll get use to it.  There is plenty of passion and love for the Cubs here.

Enjoy the ride and welcome aboard!!

nice inning rich!
lets get some runs!
Hill's fast ball looks where and how it should be
tonight..Called strike 3 to end the 5th inning.
Of course
Fielder just hit a home-run.

phat

Remember where they're playing.
That game could wind up 13-12.
Oh, I know
n/t
actually
brewers 2 runs or fewer in last 4 of 5 at Colorado.  I think hihg altitude+beer and cheese=trouble
Yeah...
I never fly after eating cheese and drinking beer.  Just a bad idea.
4-1
prince goes deep

josh fogg on the mound... could be a wild one

Cardinals...
... scored ten runs in the fifth inning tonight and are winning 10-4. The good news is, they are beating the Padres, who the Cubs are chasing in the wild card race.
Wow
who'd they hit?

phat

david wells
and MB wasnt even catching so he cant be blamed for this one
Exactly
in about 1/2 a season the barret effect is so great he doesn't even have to be in the game for the pitches to struggle
HA HA
I haven't laughed so hard in two days!  LMAO...thanks!
David Wells
I have to smile about that. Maybe no one hurt his feelings so they won't have to hit any cardinals tomorrow....
6-1 ROCKIES
LETS GO CUBS
6 - 1 COL
random note
ESPN makes me really appreciate Santo.
He may be a Homer but he's our homer
another smooth inning for Rich
c'mon boys lets get him some runs, been the same theme all year
Hill's really answered the bell tonight...
they need to get him some runs.
yea
he's done his job
This just in from Iowa...
Soto currently 2 - 3 with 2 runs scored.
Their must be something in the water in DSM
They have to be one of the better teams in the PCL
jds2, about your sig line...
...I believe that should be "diner" not "dinner."
Otherwise, very nice.
thanks for the spell check
Or the pitching in the PCL isn't near MLB quality
Whats the Colorado Score
Hahaha
I love that...
"You can't quiet The Riot" Would love to see that on a t-shirt.
Will the Cubs ever score runs for Rich Hill??
please...

soon.

Wandy Rodriguez?
why can't we score
His home ERA is 1.76
Maybe that's why.
huh?
sounds like he has a future as a brewer
Hah!
He and Cordero would make quite the starter/closer pair.
See home splits that I posted
earlier...
That park announcer
is really annoying.

He sounds like he's doing a monster truck ad.

it is TEXAS
they like 'em big down there.
NICE WORK RICH
COME ON BOYS 2-3-4 lets go!
Hell of an outing for Hill
Wood in the 8th, anyone?
I think Ron said Marmol
n/t
Make sense
Wood yesturday Marmol today.
We have quite the bullpen now
With one exception
n/t
cedano
seems to be pretty adequate at 2b today.
PLEASE
let's get some more runs Cubs!!
Ronny C
let's start it off
Braun HR 6-2 ROCKS
Anyone else
feel the breeze from that swing of Ronny's?
100 ptiches and Rich Hill is
all but done.  A nice effort.  Let's try to get to Wandy and the Astros bullpen now and try to get Hill a "W".
Ronnie Cedeno
Experiment: Concluded

Results: Negative

Recommendation: Termination

Eric Patterson meet Ronny Cedano
Ronny Cedano meet the bench...what you've already meet
Ha ha
You guys are too much!  Funny! :-)
Lee hit a ball 15 feet foul
would have been a double at worst
Yikes!
Come on Cubs.
gosh
got to hand it to wandy
Wandy = Cy Young.
Wandy is a joke
Can I say, Jamie Moyer, Bronson Arroyo, and El Duque
nice that wandy is going to pitch to the brewers
still can't beleive only 1 run vs a guy named wandy
Should have been 3
Runners at 1 and 3 in the first. Ramirez K's. Runner on 3rd 1 out in the 2nd, Ronny K's. We had lots of opportunities.
Well, two, at least
n/t
They beat up on Rodriguez at home
and haven't touched him on the road.

Fits right into his history.

Good grief!?!
Way to waste a great start by Hill!
No one can hit a curveball I guess, except Theriot.  C'mon you jugheads!
Great game, though
A real pitchers' duel.

Would be a nice one to win, particularly with the Crew down early.

Houston Announcer Said It
Would have served Pinella Nice to put a lefty in there to mix it up. How about Fontenot Batting Second instead of the worst 2 hitter west of the Pacos
This team
Cannot hit left handed pitching to save their souls.
Reminds me of Little League
nobody could hit left handers then either. At least we were only 12....
not my little league
approximately 5 walks per inning
Observation
of the Houston TV announcers:  that Sweet Lou might have made Wandy's job easier by not sticking a left-hand bat in the lineup.  They argue that it may have allowed Wandy to get "on track" since he only had to face right-handers.  Not entirely plausible, but interesting.
sorry, I didn't see your post.
How is it not plausible?
There are pitches that Lefties won't throw to Lefties.
Even the Astros announcers thought
"Wandy" got very comfortable facing eight straight RH batters.  I hope Lou is done with this experiment.  It sure seems like a bust.  We seem to hit better against LH pitchers when there is a mix of RH and LH hitters in there.

Let's just find a way to get this "W"...

Palmero
swung at that pitch big time. Where the hell was he goin?
Scrap Iron is emptying his bench.
we all know it
Marmol is awesome.
marmol in 9th?
if we don't score
Seriously
we need some runs here guys. Just do it!!!
15 pitches for Marmol
back in the 9th?
I vote yes
n/t
Time to get the bullpen.
Hopefully they bring in a righty.  I gurantee runs if they bring in a north paw.
I like the northpaw thing...
but that guarantee is looking pretty rough right now.
no confidence in murton at all
n/t
5 K's Back to Back
put the ball in play
to Back to Back to Back
Wow, I didnt realize Qualls had that good of stuff
Nasty slider.  yuck.
Qualls stuff is nasty tonight
I know, I am captain obvious...
A Joke
6 K's in a row.
dang.
qualls just made fools of us.
That was
not pleasant.
Not much
you can do about that.
It aint gonna get any easier either.
Lidge if we see the 10th
Lidge is hittable
I'll take my chances.
Wandy = Qualls = Cy Young.
Contact? Anyone?
jesus
that made me vomit.
Of course, we'll never give
another pitcher any credit, right?
well
I will... but I don't know that they are any good, or we just are horrible hitters.

But it did look nasty.

is EPatt at the game?
maybe he could try to bunt for a single...more productive than the last 6 K's
Playing LF?
I'm not the biggest Murton fan but that was bad baseball by Lou.  He wasted Fontenot.
umm....
i hate all those moves
Tip your cap
but do the Houston announcers get to be that cocky when their team is 15 games under 500
I rush home to see THIS??
Man...walk in, turn on the game, and we have yet ANOTHER pitchers dual?

I mean....really....(sigh)

yep...sorry
Well...did ya POOP 'em yet tonight Sue?
:-)
A couple
of times. Didn't help tho.
Sue's POOP
has lost its odor.

Ineffective anymore, imo.

Maybe she needs to get
more fiber in her diet?
Why Fontenot there?
I'm not sure I see the logic.  We have 3 LH batters on the bench who are capable of playing LF.  Instead, Lou chooses a 2B, meaning he has to use 2 guys for one batter.  Strange move.
Not Bruce - you feelin' better tonight, bud? :-)
Been a whale of a game so far
Nice, tight, tense pitchers' duel. Be nice to win it. We'll see.
Been a whale of a game so far
Sheeeyte!
My fingernails are already down to stubs...
OMG
That's Corey Patterson!
these next 2 outs
ARE TERRIFYING
Im sure this has been mentioned
i just got back and saw soriano was out till labor day at the earliest, here's to hoping he comes back ready to play and to the speediest recovery possible
NICE BOB
one more buddy!
nike K bobby
Howry should
Walk Lee.
Nope....FO..
don't mind him pitching carefully to lee here
PHEW
lets get some runs!
thank you Carlos!
Whew!
Now let's do something.
thank you Carlos!
Sucker!
Patterson up
Let's see how this experiment goes...
this will be epatt's first mlb at-bat, no?
good luck, kid.
Lets hope it goes
better than Corey's first game...
0 for 3, 2K
Lets
try and put the ball in play this inning, whose with me?
Hey....it's kinda nice in here tonight...
got a nice, friendly vibe....waddup wit dat??
:-)
You're wrong.
Brewers losing cubs are not
It is
nice in here tonight.
did not think lee would getting out on a 3-0 count
The guys on baseball tonight just discussed what
we already know:  Carlos Marmol is the balls.
Time to Take First Place back
as a nice team get well quick gift to The Fonz!
WTG JK....keep it up...
nice start JASON
i still want geovanny....

but i'm rooting for ya to prove me wrong!

Lou has 3 more rookies on this team
than he probably wants already.
i know
people get upset though when i talk about his similarities to dusty
Kendall: tomorrow's #2 hitter
E patt is tiny!
Eric's a tall feller.
compared to his brother, maybe? :)
Who wouldve thought...
Kendall could actually hit still.  COME ON EP!!!
Here we go
Let's go E Pat... clap,clap,clap,clap,clap
He looks like the guy from the Mod Squad
n/t
You really dont see young guys
with chew anymore.
3-1
swing away or bunt?
i say swing
way to get the job done EPAT!
n/t
Eric did his job
productive out
well done EPatt
Thank goodness for the bobble....nice bunt..
There's something he doesn't have in common with
his brother.
Well thats more bunting then corey ever did :)
..
THE RIOTTTTTTTTTT
lets do this.
EPatt
still no official MLB AB...that was a Sac right?
Time to star a "RIOT"...yes?
Kendall acts as though
his knees are killing him
c'mon clifford
one time...
i think thats about as far as you can hit a ball
and get out
juuuust a .....basehitbasehitbasehitbasehitbsaehit
wow.
saw that one coming.
Come on Cliff.
Bring The Riot home.
You mean Kendall...
the Riot is sitting on the bench.
Yep
that's what I meant.
oh my god
that wasnt even close
really bad swing....jonesesque...
He missed that by a good foot
Sitting dead red
Cliffy wasn't even CLOSE on that swing...
what is he swinging at ?
He has looked bad for a while now
quite awhile.....
and now with Sori out, there is no more hiding...
come on floyd
I think tacking a loss on lidge might weaken his psyche for the rest of the series
Well there ya go.....just a base hit....
would have been nice....(argh)
Why swing at that?
Yikes.
Well Cliff swung at the same 3 pitches...
2 golf swings and a tennis forehand
wow, that was truly horrible.
pwnd.
crap.
this is getting bad.
How did he not see that pitch coming
Its unhittable and Floyd kept going after it
embarassing
cliff should be ashamed for that at-bat, wasn't even close at any of those pitches, none of which looked liked they would be called strikes
ugh....
with all these moves we've managed to hurt our defense late in the game as well

floyd into right, epat in LF, DeRosa back to 2B

if that was a beachball
Cliff would have missed it with those swings.   Ouch.

Let's try to get to the 11th.

Nomination for worst at bat of the night...
And run away winner.
Um, Hill not moving the bat on three pitches?
But
Pitcher vs a hired bat left feilder
Still to K on three pitches and not swing at one?
Nevermind that gameday showed them as right down the middle.
truly dreadful
It's been a long time since Lidge has made anyone look that bad.
Howry in the 9th
would be nice to get 2 innings out of a releiver in a potential extra innings game
I wish
we could trade Jones, Floyd, Pagan, Murton for two good outfielders... or like compress them and maybe add their stats together to get the best mediocore player the game has ever seen.
What's happening with D. Ward ?
anyone know
Boy is Floyd horrible or what
He's not horrible
but he certainly looked horrible in that at-bat.
mmm, yeah
pretty much
Aren't you an angry little woman.
Deflated yes,
angry naw. Just expected more from Cliff than what we have been getting.
Wow
I think I could have gotten closer to one of those pitches than Cliff did. That last pitch was one of those where everyone in the park knew a slider was coming, and he still missed it by a foot.
Hey look ! Another slider at the shoetops !
And another Cub flailing away at it like he's swatting flies !

And now we get Wuertz. Great.

OK WHY
bring in a new pitcher and not double switch to have jones play RF????
So Howry's arm
doesn't fall off before Soriano returns.
i dont mind the pitching change
but why not use it double switch, pitchers spot is due up 3rd next inning and if we get there he's going to use jones to PH anyways AND jones is a better defender than floyd by a mile
At least "Gas Can" Ohman isn't in.
yet.
0-2 count ---> leadoff walk
way to nibble
ballgame
OK, then, shut off the TV
n/t
OMG
from 0-2 to a walk, i have never understood what goes through a pitcher's head when this crap happens
Wuertz
Are you kidding. Lead off walk. He is going to kill this.
Leadoff walks in extra innings have a tendancy...
to score.
I've got a bad feeling about this...
Sheesh
n/t
it's like deja vu all over again
K + W =
Kerry Wood finishes with a strikeout for a Win!

Hope the Fonzieless Cubbies can get there tonight!

Lead off walk after being ahead of the hitter
0-2 in the count.
kendall
arm looks shaky
The April Cubs return...
Time for a DP
the 'stros bench is pretty thin, huh?
i believe they carry three catchers.
nice play EPatt
kendall
i'm sorry but i still dont see how he's a great defensive catcher..... i really dont see how he's any better than barrett.... i'm sorry
You're not sorry.
I'm sorry that you are offering slams couched as apologies.
that should have been blocked by Kendall
This is a game
when the "leaders" have to take over.

A-Ram, DLEE, DeRosa...

A Big Freakin' ZERO!!!

righty
Damn it.  Throw him crap, and face the righty!
Oh, well
Offense needed to do a better job.

Hopefully Rockies hold on and Cubs lose no ground.

I hope too
but feels sick we have to depend on the Rox beating the brewers when we cannot beat the Astros. Loosing 2 in a row is now getting common.
Deplorable
two days in a row they let the Brewers off the hook...

All you guys who start drooling when they see THE BREWERS ARE LOSING - please. Can you just wait until the Cubs take care of business?

damn.
that's a huge letdown. we'll git 'em tomorrow.
POOP
Poop...poop...poop!!!!
fucking
and the implode happens
It's time to shake up the %$(#ing lineup.
Jesus Christ.  How in the hell do you score 1 freaking run.
Shake up with what?
As much as people like to hate Soriano around here, the Cubs lost a lot of offensive potential for a month.  Maybe he was hitting in the "wrong" spot in the order but you only lead off once per game.  The combination of Murton/Floyd/Jones/Pagan is weak in just about every way imaginable.
man...
we let an opportunity get away tonight
we let an opportunity get away tonight
Naw, dude....
THEY let one get away....WE just watched helplessly.    :-)
Nice effort
another game that the offense didn't show up.  Let the excuse makers begin.....
No excuses
Offense needed to do a better job.

If you want to jump off the ledge, feel free.

Well there is always next year..isn't that right
pal? This offense sucks and it feels stupid when these bozos call out the fans for booing. 1 run against the astros?
You must have been complaining
when they scored six the other day, too.
I love it when people tell me how I am
or am not supposed to root for a team.
What we needed was
for hitters like Floyd not to try and hit a HR on every pitch!  Good teams win games like this.

August = April?  Let's hope not!

How do the Cubs lose to the Astros?
n/t
that idiotic lead off walk spelt doom
but I would put this loss on the offense..
jb called it but everyone else thought it
you cant let up a lead-off walk no matter the inning and not expect a run scored, even more so with an 0-2 count no business walking a batter there
RIch Hill
At least Hill did well.
You have to tip your hat to Wandy.
No, wait. You don't. He sucks. You have to hit the GD ball, Lee and A-Ram.
Wandy has a 1.76 ERA at home
What the Cubs needed was a sac fly in the first or the third.

Well, they've won their share like that recently. Now, they lose one.

Like I said, Rockies win tonight and it'll be a lot more palatable.

It won't be palatable
The fact that our offense is real bad still remains. Right now I can't be happy to see the brewers loose. I want to see the cubs win and want to see us win emphatically. This monkey business is horrible.
BFD
The team lost 4 of 7 against the best in the NL, then proceed to lose against the Astros with 5 hits and 1 run - and you want to just tell us about the Brewers maybe losing.

Always nice to WIN to capture sole possesion of 1st...

Well, tough
You can't, and won't win them all. And you'll have your fair share of games you should have won but didn't and games you shouldn't have won but did.

If the Cubs are going through a bit of a rough patch right now, that's understandable. Considering they've made up 7.5 games in the standings in the last month, that's to be expected.

Patience, grasshopper.

and then depression set in..
Great pitched game by both teams. Not sure what happened to the Astros pitching staff that gave up 54 runs last week, but that just seems to happen to the Cubs.
Cubs lose 7 of last 12 games
n/t
n/t isn't needed.
and
four of their last five. One run off a guy with an era of 4.71. Wasted a really nice effort by Hill tonight. We are going to start falling like a rock in the standings if they don't start to score some runs.
One Run
One run.  The stros have given up the third most HR's in the league.
If the Cubs
score virtually nothing the next two days, you might have a point.
We haven't scored jack for runs
over the last week, save for a couple little outbursts.  No power whatsoever.  What can Lou do?
How long have you watched baseball?
One week without scoring much. Baseball season is 26 weeks long.

That's the breaks.

Cedeno played and Wuertz pitched the 10th
Cedeno cannot play at all. Wuertz in a tie ball game is useless. Plus, with the pitcher spot up next, why not walk him. Make Garner take out the pitcher, and face the pinch hitter. Gets Garner to use his last hitter and gets rid of Lidge.

Bad call on Lous part, but we should have had at least 4 runs.

Wasted outing by Hill.

total agreeance.
it wasn't the pitcher spot up next.
there was a double switch. even if munson hadn't singled in the run, mike lamb would've batted next. just sayin.
wow, we got completely shut down tonight.
i wasn't really expecting that. the astros staff just looked nasty. did we have any walks?

i've got a sickening feeling that we're going to get swept. woody williams throws tomorrow, and though he's a bum, he's also a competitive junkballer. then oswalt.

Shit like tonight infuriates me
For the first time in several starts Rich Hill gives you 7 solid innings.

What was the approach at the plate tonight ? Swing hard in case you happen to put the bat on the ball ?

Slider at the shoetops, slider at the shoetops, slider at the shoetops, slider at the shoetops. Notice a pattern yet ? Apparently neither the Cubs nor Gerald Perry did.

Leadoff walk. Sac to 2nd. WP to 3rd. Single on ANOTHER hanging slider. Ballgame.

I hate stupid baseball. Was tonight some kind of previously scheduled retrospective on the 2004-2006 Chicago Cubs ?

posts like this really piss me off.
"Notice a pattern yet ? Apparently neither the Cubs nor Gerald Perry did."

ah, but you did, buddy. should've had you in there. coulda slapped those sliders out of the juicebox.

I didn't see the game until the last inning
but Wandy must have gone nuts. Rich Hill looks like he had a nice game and got no run support from it. That sure is disappoining, and yes the Brew Crew looks like they will lose, but we aren't gaining any ground. They have been a great team and we need to capitalize when they lose. So far this is two games in a row we could have done so. We could be 2 games up in the division instead of still 1 back. That's a shame, especially when it's the damn Astros. Damn.
4th series in a row losing the first game...
During our July run we were consistently winning the first game every series.  Now, we are losing the first games of series and we are not playing as well.
Leftys kill us
at least we won't see that lineup again for a while. And Josh Fogg has pitched great through 7 against the Brews.
I've had it
The negativity and abject lack of realistic behavior around here is too much to take.

I'll be lurking, perhaps, but not posting much anymore.

I certainly hope some of you aren't like this in your regular lives, because if you are, you must be an absolute "joy" to be around.

And there it is
The perspective post.
Considering it appears you have none
I guess it was necessary.

Tough game to lose, but I'm not going to slit my wrists over it. There's another game tomorrow, you know.

You know nothing of me nor how I am feeling.
I just love that you are preaching so much.  Send me an address so I can build a pulpit and UPS it to you.

I agree that people freak out too much over one loss.  But the people who try to give them "perspective" or tell them how they are supposed to react or support the team are nearly as bad.

Well, when that's basically all you see
in the majority of posts, what does that tell you?

Nobody's trying to "tell" anybody how to behave. But it's ridiculous to get this angst-ridden about a team that's only one game out of first place in its division, with 50-something games left to be played.

Can't we just enjoy the season? Instead of making things more fun, this constant negativity just makes it a drag.

i thought you were taking a break from posting.
But you are just attracting attention to it.
Let'em vent.  Though I wouldn't mind an "Ignore Poster" feature.
"Can't you just enjoy the season"
In all fairness some people including myself cannot "enjoy" after a humiliating loss like tonight's. Let me tell you something, more than the loss we are angry at the way we lost. The way Floyd was flailing at those sliders, the way we wasted tons of opportunities again to score some runs etc etc. Now we are not the Pirates or the Nationals, for heavens sake we are the Chicago Cubs, a big market ball club. We haven't won a World Series in 100 years and the fans are hungry and when you are hungry and deprived its hard to see dumb mistakes and "enjoy". When you are in a crappy division like the NL Central its pathetic that you have to depend on some other team's losses to avoid loosing any ground. Us angry people are as happy if not more than anyone when we win because some people post over here as if we are always unhappy. We are also happy when we loose a hard fought match. But tonight it was yet another night when you could throw underhand and our offense would hit into double plays.
don't agree
"The negativity and abject lack of realistic behavior around here is too much to take."

Everyone has their own sense of realism.

There is plenty of baseball yet top be played, but when the Division leader keeps giving you a freebie, and the team blows it, it is not fantasy to believe that the team is not doing the job now - particularly on a night a struggling pitcher pitches again.

I know - "It happens".

Happens too much to the Cubs, imo.

" a struggling pitcher pitches a GEM."
A struggling pitcher
Who has been lights out at home all season. And whom the Cubs pummeled a few weeks ago in Chicago.

Just once, I'd like someone to admit that, maybe, another team is pretty good.

Tonight, it was a combination of excellent pitching by the Astros and a lack of situational hitting by the Cubs.

There's anothe game tomorrow. Promise not to slit your throats before then, OK?

why the attitude?
let them alone.
It's just aggravating
and it just makes a downer of a night that much worse unnecessarily. Because all things considered, I still think the Cubs are in good shape.
don't you see that your posts
are more of a "downer"? so, what's the point. don't come here after a loss. of course, this place will be down. at least come with a joke.
I've got a joke
Ronny Cedeno is a major league shortstop.
and second baseman.
Not really
And if I did tell a joke, I'd be slammed for that, too. "How can you joke at a time like this?"

Anyway, enough. Tomorrow is another day.

The Astros
are not pretty good. Is it a crime to be pissed off about a loss? How about four losses in the last five games? I haven't given up on the team, they are still right in it and in good position with two months to go. But they have not played well lately and aren't showing much life at the plate. I'm certainly not going to apologize for being unhappy about that. Yes, some folks think the sky is falling after every loss but so what? Those folks are not any more annoying than the ones who constantly chastise people for being "too negative." Everyone deals with things differently.
Yes, but the negativity
starts right away here -- if they don't put up a five spot in the first inning, we get the same old same old.

Look, losing stinks. But it happens. After the run the Cubs have been on recently, it goes to figure they probably are overdue for a rough patch.

Some people, however, react to this as if a meteor just hit their house. Bi-polar Bettys, the lot of 'em.

why do you care? i don't get it.
Wrong Bruce...
Hill's era is 3.88 @ home to 3.49 on the road.

He is 3-2 at home - BAA? .243 Home, .202 Road

OBP is also higher at home with a .331 compared to .287

In fact in every catagory except wins (although tonight he should have had one) he is quite a bit higher at home.

He has been shaky recently at home for the most part, Bruce, not "lights out".

He WAS lights out in April.

No, Rodriguez
is lights out at home.
Ohhhh...
Yes. Indeed he is amazingly another pitcher.

Dan Pleisac stated it was the best he has ever seen the pitcher throw a curve.

A "career day".

Where are
those who said to stay still @ the trade deadline? IDC what the price was. You're trying to win now and deep inside, we all doubt Z will be back.
i think z will be back.
if he doesn't re-sign, then all the money the club has spent this year was a waste, and the cubs are screwed for years. they don't have any choice but to sign him.
Winning
I always scoreboard watch, even in April, but a few weeks ago I really had myself under control, thinking that winning was the only thing that mattered, nevermind what the Brewers were doing. Well, that's still true. At this rate, we'll stay one game behind the Brewers until the end and be 5 games under 500 with no wild card in the picture. need to find some offense right away, and give Marmol some more work.
Cubs need some professional hitters...
The AAA prospects are nice, but very few of them actually pan out, or teams would constantly be calling up guys from AAA. The % of AAA players who make it in the bigs has to be low. I think the Cubs need to make a trade while they still have value...Fontenot and Theriot appear to actually make contact more times than not, Pie is young and has the most "tools" to work with...Murton and Patterson should be moved, while they have some value. The Cubs just cannot count on solid contributions from this many AAA position players.
murton should have been moved long ago.
i just don't think he can get you much.
its a tough one
becasue Hill pitched really well and the Astros are a really poor team.

Lee and A Ram are going to have to turn up the slugging. Lee hasnt been hitting in situations that matter (RISP) and A Ram is quietly in a mini-slump. There isnt room to hide, everyone is going to have to step up.

You can't say you didn't see this coming.
Every team goes through a rough patch in the season.  Even Detroit had lost 5 straight before tonight.  It just seems worse since we're not that far above .500, and we just got done playing Philadelphia and New York.  At least we had a lead-off hitter with a couple of hits tonight.
Step Up
Someone is going to have to step up put this team on their shoulders.  A team built with power in mind can't hit the long ball, even at juice park.
hmmmm
Cubs avg: .269
Cubs Avg RISP w/2 outs: .261
The sooner Lou sends Cedeno back to
AAA and bring Pie back, I will feel better.  Let EPatt be a back up in LF or 2B and Pie be the back up in CF.  Pie brings energy to this team and it looks like it needs more energy right now.

If we can't hit a long ball, let's have out best defense and speed here.  Cedeno did nothing to move batters along early in the game when it mattered.  He got lucky with that near whiff grounder late in the game.  Cedeno looks hopeless at the plate.

Every Cedeno AB leads me to one of two conclusions
Either he is pressing way too much.  Or the pitching in the PCL stinks.
And BTW,, EPatt
showed a nice eye at the plate against Lidge.  Clearly he did not get all his skills from his brother.  That alone makes me feel better about him (EPatt) than Cedeno.
careful what you wish for
We all want the Rox to sweep the Brewers, but remember this: They're a good team playig well now, who the Cubs will play for four on the road. That's why the Astros series is so important. You can't expect to do better than split in the next one. The Cubs need to start hitting again, especially Aramis with that stupid uppercut swing.
GAH!
Latroy Hawkins in for the Rockies! Take cover quick!
LaTroy
is on the bump. Let's all root for good old LaTroy!
Perspective
hopefully Colorado can hold on and win, leaving us still only 1GB

I think this loss seems worse in the wake of losing Soriano and the worry it place about the offense, but I don't know if Soriano would have been alot of help the way Wandy was working that curve, he got Lee and Ramirez swinging, and I would consider Soriano much more of a free swinger

Soto
a trade for Piazza

Even if those guys did not play a game at catcher, they are better hitting options than Cedeno.

The SS on Rockies just did his Cedeno
imitation.  E-6

...two plays in a row.

they were two weak grounders
that game should be over.
Back from the Game
That ending blew.  More to come in a diary with pictures.
Al, I need to vent some frustration...
I promise to not swear.

Gosh darn it, son of a gun.  How do you get one darn run off of this stinken pitching staff?  It gets old watching opportunities slip away like this game did.

I know some people will say: Well this was a game the Cubs should not have won.  Well, my take on that is in the beginning of the year the Cubs lost a bunch of games that they should have won, I want to see the Cubs win some games that they should have lost.

Another thing, I want to root for Ronny Cedeno, I really do.  But when he comes up in a key situation, I just feel that he will not come through.  I would rather see Mike Fontenot, even though it was against a lefty.

There, now I feel a little better.

For one day...even tommorrow
It would be ok to Lou to Just say, "Screw it." Let the lion's share of the players have a day off and go with the kids and one or two  "essential" players.

They could not have done much worse on the "O" side.

not tomorrow, got to face oswalt on weds.
need to win tomorrow; otherwise, the sweep becomes a real possibility.
He did that last Thursday basically
Fontenot, Murton, and Cedeno all started.

I guess what you might want to see though is

3B Theriot
RF Patterson
CF Pagan
1B Lee
LF Murton
2B Fontenot
SS Cedeno
C  Hill
SP Marshall

That would say screw it.

Double play. We are still only a game back.
Many of us are dejected...
Well - I am.

However, if this team is going to make it to the playoffs this year - they are going to HAVE to take care of business against the little sisters of the poor.

They did NOT pass the litmus test this past weekend, and somehow they are gonna have to pull themselves out of this and get back in the W column with frequency, NOW.

Not me.
The Cubs haven't been hot for a while; they've been a .500 team for going on 3 weeks. They've been in their slump, yet are still only a game back.
To me, it's a real pennant race and very exciting.

Hit and Hit.
Please Lou no more of Cedeno. Enough, hitting him in the two hole, when I saw that at 8:00pm eastern, I almost cried.
No more Ronny and no more Pagan please.
And can someone hit a homerun this month?
Yes the Cubs have lost 4 of 5.
We could not have expected the Cubs to get through the rest of the year without a bout like this.  The question will be how does the team come out of this funk and how quickly will they do it?

As we have seen with Lou, he is not the toothpick sucking Dusty.  We will see another new lineup tomorrow and he will tinker and change things and push buttons.  He will move bodies up and down from AAA (and AA if necessary) until he has the right combo of people here to be winning again.

I am convinced that Lou will get us out of this funk as quickly as humanly possible.  Lou is not sitting in his hotel room watching porn right now...well maybe he is.  But once he is done with the porn, he will be on to figuring out what to do with the line up to get more runs across the plate tomorrow.

LOL! Agreed...
Even with the porn, Lou will certainly make some moves to do whatever he can to jumpstart the tired engine.

You are so right. This was one reason why I was convinced that Pie would get called up b/c although he is MLB hitting challenged - he brings incredible energy.

Apparently, we'll have to wait until 9/1 to see him up here...

And how much more Cedeno do we have to watch??

Agreed with all of this
I apologize for getting a bit testy tonight. Even though I try to maintain perspective, I do take these games seriously. When everybody starts piling on and gnashing teeth, it just gets to be a little too much.

I think we all want the same thing --  the Cubs to play to their potential and, with hope and luck, win a World Series.

One game out. Not bad, even though the team isn't playing all that well right now.

Should be a good couple of months, Soriano or not.

Please don't
stop posting like you posted above. There are far too few of us who don't think it's the end of the world if this team loses. This is just a minor slump and they will turn it around shortly.
I am not giving up on this team but,
I am calling out one player. Derek Lee. I know he has been a rock this year, but we were all willing to overlook his lack in power and lack of clutch hits, as of late, but now he has to find another gear.

We are not going out and getting anyone. We cannot. We have no money. I want a pizza right now, and I dont get paid until tomorrow. I dont get my pizza and the Cubs get zero help for the same reason. WE HAVE NO MONEY. So stop looking outside for help, what we have is what we get.

Positives tonight are plentiful.

Hill pitched a superb game. He was electric with the curve ball and the fastball in on all those righties. He gave one mistake to a guy you cant make mistakes against. He can get in a long line of others who have done the samee.

Theriot is a legit leadoff hitter who hit to all fields, stole third base, and played agressive tonight.

Eric Patterson can bunt. It must skip brothers genetically speaking.

Kendall keeps hitting. He came up with a clutch single against Lidge and should have been driven in, like many others this evening.

This was the worst game possible for the Cubs, coming off that tough Mets series and the injury. Wandy is a tough lefty at home, and crap, with this team, any lefty is rough. We played like we did the first half, and I am positive that Lou will not let this team crumble.

Woody Williams tomorrow night. Old, bad and a righty. I not only expect a win tomorrow, I demand it. It is just a damn shame that they faced Sean Marshall once already. Tonight.

This team will not crumble people. The teams hope of a postseason is still alive and kicking.

Now that's what I'm talking about
Good post, LLC.
I agree.
Its tough to pick on a guy like Lee but you're right; he needs to turn it on, now. Your three batter can't have some of the production numbers he has. I know its tough to just flip a switch and hit the ball out of the yard but singles and doubles (to an extent) are for guys in the five spot. This teams needs to start hitting the ball out of the park. I've been adamant over time that power isn't something you need an abundance of but seriously, they make Wrigley look like a tomb.
Very well said
I guees we could use that term that everyone seems to be using in sports now a days

"circle the wagons"

and go after it

"The teams hope of a
postseason is still alive and kicking."

Yeah, no kidding.  they're a game out and the team that's ahead of them hasn't played .500 ball since two weeks before Memorial Day.

how the hell are we gonna score runs
without soriano, this game was sickening and i dont see it getting any better with some of these shit prospects were using (murton, cedeno, pagan)
I'll say it again
If this team goes into the tank without Soriano, it wasn't that good in the first place.

I don't think they'll tank.

and why exactly would that be
witnessing tonights pathetic offensive effort, whats on this team that will make it better?
I shouldn't feed the troll, but ...
This team has had more good offensive nights than bad ones.

If nobody had seen the Cubs play before tonight and had only seen this game, they might not have been impressed. Fortunately, there are 162 games in a season, not one.

You do know they play 162 games in a season, right?

I have seriously thought about this
and I have come to the conclusion that Theriot's ability to get on base will become as useful as 18 solo home runs. How many times we had no one on base for a Lee double or Ramirez double. Soriano will be missed, and so will his days as a lead off hitter. Theriot and Fontenot will prove to be just as valuable a commodity as a leadoff hitter with an on base percentage of .270 since the all star break, and has a walk to strike out ratio 3 to 28 this last month.

If all D Lee can do is hit doubles, than at least now there will be someone on base for him to drive in.

And so that it doesnt seem like I am calling out only D Lee for his lack of power, Ramirez was the Pepsi Clutch Player of July. WITH 1HR and 22RBI's. 1 God Damn Home Run. Al says we cant say God Damn in this room. Doesnt matter, nobody is listening anyways. (hope you caught the reference)

yeah
theriot is quickly beocming mr dependable...but is left stranded time and time again by our 3-5 slots.  the amount of players left on base yesterday was incredibly frustrating.
I'm not going to panic
becasue of the loss of a player whose been hittng .255 since the All-Star break.

This teams been pretty lackluster in a few areas the past week.

It's amazing how freaked out people get.

phat

Bat Kendall 2nd
and demote Cedeno.  Dude sucks..
It's all about the pitching anyway.
Lou had been publicly cranky about the team's record against leftys, and preaching resting people during August in the middle of 20 non-stop games. He'd never admit it, but this was a throwaway for him.

Power, shmower. They got there w/o it, let them continue the killing by a thousand cuts. If every guy gets a single or walk, the game will be well in hand.

I loved that
Rich Hill pitched a great game it's just sad that his team couldn't get runs for him. Today is a new day and they will try again to get a win.
Well
at least we are STIll only 1 game out and the Brew-crew is still on the road.... Keep the hope alive!
