Bleed Cubbie Blue

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Dodgers, Tuesday 9/4, 7:05 CT

Use this diary for comments on Carlos Zambrano's apology press conference, which has just ended, and at which he took almost no questions.

And now for something completely different: here you thought the NFL was the only "No Fun League", what with its coaches not allowed to wear suits on the sidelines unless they're designed by Reebok, and the current controversy about the Canon-logo'ed red vests that sideline photographers now have to wear.

But today we learn that Lou Piniella has received a "wardrobe warning", not long after Red Sox manager Terry Francona got the same thing from the fashion police:

Cubs manager Lou Piniella said he received a letter last week warning he faces a $1,000 fine should he fail to wear the Cubs' game jersey during games. The warning came after the Cubs played the Giants in San Francisco almost two weeks ago and Piniella wore the team's fleece pullover.
Stupid, right? Ah, but later in that article we learn the real reason for this warning:
MLB was watching -- and so, apparently, are baseball's corporate sponsors, who make the uniforms.
There are the magic words -- "corporate sponsors", in this case Majestic, which took over the uniform contract from Russell a couple of years ago. In so doing they got the rights to make ALL jerseys and official MLB souvenirs, which meant that the cool-looking "Evolution of the Cubby Bear" T-shirt, that I bought a couple of years ago, could no longer be manufactured, as Majestic got the rights to all the logos and refused to license that shirt.

Anyway, a number of managers like the pullover look and feel, and I think Yankees manager Joe Torre has it right:

"You'd think there'd be more important things to do this time of year than do Mickey Mouse stuff like that," Torre said. "It's a farce, I think."
Exactly. There are times you'd want to go to the MLB offices in New York, line up all the department heads, and shake them and say, "What the hell are you thinking?!!!?11?!"

And now, back to our regularly scheduled pennant race.

 Today's Starting Pitchers
Steve Trachsel
 S. Trachsel
Cubs
vs. Brad Penny
 B. Penny
Dodgers
6-8 W-L 14-4
4.48 ERA 2.88
45 SO 122
69 BB 62
16 HR 5
vs. LA -- vs. Cubs
The last time Steve Trachsel pitched a game in a Cub uniform was on October 3, 1999, the final game of that dismal season, in St. Louis. He got pounded and the Cubs lost. The last time he pitched in Wrigley Field was July 14, 2006 as a member of the Mets -- he threw well that day and the Mets won.

But that was then and this is now. Trachsel's overall numbers are not very good -- particularly that frightening BB/K ratio -- but in his last six starts, comprising the month of August, he was 1-1 with a 2.37 ERA. Those numbers don't sound that impressive until you realize that the team he was on -- Baltimore -- was 9-19 in August, with a team ERA of 6.65 (and that includes Trachsel's 2.37).

On the other hand, he faced the Dodgers as a Met on September 10, 2006 and got pounded. The Dodgers might start Mike Lieberthal behind the plate tonight; he's 13-for-32, 2 doubles, 2 HR (.406/.429/.656) against Trachsel.

On paper, this doesn't appear to be much of a matchup, what with Penny one of the best pitchers in the NL. However, Penny hasn't been as good since the All-Star break as he was before. He has started seven games in his career vs. the Cubs, and is 2-2, 3.60 in those games. Jacque Jones is 4-for-9 with a HR off Penny; Derrek Lee 4-for-8, 2 doubles; and Aramis Ramirez 9-for-21, a double among the 9 hits.

Oh, if only TV schedules made sense. Tomorrow's game, which is nationally available on WGN, is also being picked up by ESPN. Today's game, which is cable-only... stays there. National coverage score: Tomorrow 2, Today 0. So, check out today's Mediacenter link.

Trachsel
Lets hope Steve gets off to a good start tonight.  It would be nice to see him get a quality start then see Wood, Marmol, and Dempster nail down the last three innings.  I hope I'm not asking for too much.
Wardrobe warnings.....
...Scioscia got one as well. Really, really, really stupid. I was wondering why I couldn't get another Evolution of the Cubbie Bear shirt. it's uh, a bit dodgy.
Relief in Milwaukee
Brewers get Ray King

He won't however be eligible for the postseason roster should they (G-d forbid!) make it. I think it's a desperation move that won't help them a bit

I'll Say This For Ray King.....
.....he's a genuinely nice person who pitches a lot better than you'd think, given that round body of his. I don't understand why he's been on so many teams.
he sure was tough vs the Cubs
at least when he was with STL
Let me be the lone voice of agreement with MLB.
I think managers and coaches should be wearing the jersey like the players. That sweatshirt that some managers wear looks sloppy and unprofessional. MLB should also do something about the players who wear pant bottoms past their shoes.
I concur
Might as well take care of the problem before you have someone looking homeless coming out of the dugout, a la Bellicek. I really can't believe the NFL did nothing about that for so long.
Money, money, money...
Pinella, Francona, Torre should give half their money back. The money that pay their salaries, the player salaries, and add to the largesse of MLB is, amongst other things, from the big dollars that the sport gets from corporate sponsors. The apparel folks pay a ton of dollars and therefore they deserve to have a pretty big say over apparel related issues. On the surface level this may be ridiculous, but getting big dollars helps create the lifestyle that MLB players and managers are accustomed to. Therefore they have to play by the rules.

DmL

Wardrobe (and MLB) malfunctions
Argghhhh!!!!  I don't even know why I bother thinking about anything to do with MLB and their inane policies, but I guess I have to ask the question...

Doesn't Majestic make team fleece pullovers?

If yes, then why the big deal?  Isn't an official logo pullover just as good as an official logo jersey?

If not, then a pox on their house for not realizing that hey - sometimes it gets a little cold during the season.  Or in Francona's case, a circulatory condition where it helps to stay really warm.

Stupid policies like this are yet another reason why we need Mark Cuban in this league - and obviously yet another reason why he will never be allowed in.

Apparently nobody at the league office...
...can figure out that outfits meant for pro athletes in the peak of their physical condition during athletic competition aren't necessarily the best choice for old men sitting on wooden benches. Apparently.
here, here
no one would want to see phil jackson in a basketball uni. (shudder)
Apparently
Francona wears the pullover for circultory problems and has notified MLB in June about this. I don't have an issue with it, however to go after Francona in the middle of the game to see if he has the proper jersey on under his pullover is BS.
MLB, wake up, monitor/and notify players, managers some other time, not in the middle of the game. What about the other issues, the draft where high school players sign for more than Theriot will see in 3 years and others, and of course the roid issues. Geez what a joke.

Go Cubs, hope Steve gives us a good 6, Penny will be tough.

I'm headed to Wrigley shortly for the game
I was amped with morning, but feeling chilled and relaxed now, which usually means a Cubs win. GO CUBS! I want to sing that corny, but strangely lovable, song tonight.
you
mean GO!CUBS!WIN!
Piniella's wardrobe
With Lou's physique, I'm surprised Majestic wants him to wear any of their clothing.  Seeing him in a jersey sure doesn't make me want to run out and buy one.
LOL.
;)
Good point!
lmao
Let's do this
Cubs, you know you can.
lou
doesnt he almost always wear his jersey??
mlb
needs to crack down on all of those players who wear thier hats cocked to one side. thats bigger than a stupid jersey problem
Eric Patterson
According to WSCR, he arrived late yesterday and was sent home. He is also not at the ballpark today.

DmL

Uh oh.
What time are they supposed to show up, anyway?

phat

And, the ESPN 1000
Bruce Levine reported the same story as he was sent down to AA ball.

This is the difference in the two reporters.

Remember: WSCR is the White Sox flagship. So, they get the scraps - not to mention their reporters do not have nearly the cred that Levine does.

WSCR
I heard the intial "breaking news" bit as WSCR first reported that Patterson was no longer around. I turned off the radio about two minutes later so I have no idea if, in their update, they had the full report. If the Cubs are not passing along the same info to WSCR because they're the Sox flagship than they're idiots. They're cutting off their nose to spite their face and cutting off a valuable conduit to a LOT of fans.

DmL

All's good fellas...
...we now have the speedy Samuel Fuld from AA to take his spot.

Who the fuld is that?

patterson pitch-hit in the 5th yesterday?
I'm not starting any rumors
But I don't think they mete out such harsh penalties unless they suspect the guy was incredibly irresponsible or they smelled alcohol on his breath.  Maybe I'm wrong.
Well...
... I wonder if Tony LaRussa would have preferred that he had dealt with Josh Hancock a bit more harshly when he arrived late to the ballpark and did other things that warranted some penalty. The Cubs want Patterson to be a key player for them in the future and today he learned a pretty big lesson. Hopefully he'll take something from it.

DmL

if he was sent home yesterday,
then who was the guy in the patterson jersey who hit the double?
Yeah, I don't
get that rumor because he did bat yesterday. Funny how rumors get started.
He was demoted...
because he was late today.
In other news, rookie Eric Patterson was sent to Double-A Tennessee after arriving late to the ballpark on Tuesday, a violation the Cubs did not want to let go because he'd done the same thing at Triple-A Iowa. Outfielder Sam Fuld was called up from Tennessee to take his place. Pitchers Carmen Pignatiello and Kevin Hart were also promoted from Iowa.

I like Lou
Manager Lou Piniella said he believes Cubs fans will forgive Zambrano, and said he can empathize with his fiery right-hander because they share similar personality traits.

"He and I probably have a lot in common, because I've stuck my foot in my mouth a lot of times, too," Piniella said. "And as I've gotten older, I've gotten a little wiser. And you make mistakes in life, and when you make mistakes, you're a man and you apologize like he did. And that's it."

Piniella said it was up to him and Larry Rothschild to fix Zambrano, who fell apart on the mound on Tuesday.

"He had good stuff, he just came unglued after that run through the streets of Pamplona," Piniella said, referring to Zambrano's base-running adventure. "I think it tired him out. Anyways, let's just concentrate on the future and get him back to where he was."

Cooler heads will prevail.

This cracked me up.

phat

Oops! Guess
he'll think twice about being late again.
Great move on Eric Pat today
this will make him a much better player in the future.  As I said yesterday, 9/3 will be seen as a big turn-around day for Big Z.  Lou is the master of these sorts of things.  This is not Dusty-Town anymore!
So what did I miss ?
Just back from 6 days in LA. Got scores but did not see any of the games. Ok Z had a meltdown  & the human rain delay is back,Dempster is still scary. and I got a bill for about $2,000 for post season tickets. I really had not time ( or computer) to look at  BCB except very briefly and folks all I can say is save your energy & fasten your seat belts it is going to be a bumpy month.

As for tonight, Traschel vs Penny does not fill me with optimism.
Penny is world class jackass. He does not eat babies or kick dogs but he does fight with teamates, umpires or anything else at hand and he will always be the "fake" #31. Alas he is a damn good pitcher. Best shot is to get someone to piss him off and get him kicked out early ( which has happened before).

NAnd are you in N.Y.
now? Or Chi?
Just a quick trip for a movie convention
I go every year. Hey I turned down  A FREE TRIP to Italy
this October for a silent movie convention. I am hoping to be
otherwise engaged.
Penny hasn't pitched at Wrigley
since game 7 2003 NLCS, according to Baseball Reference. Anyone remember that one?
Please don't bring up 2003 again.
Thanks :-)
Yes. DO NOT
bring up 2003, or Penny in the same sentence. Thanks!
Patterson Was Sent Down
And Pignatiello, Kevin Hart and Sam Euld were recalled today, according to AP. They also mention he was sent down because he was late yesterday.
how could you be late??
What a bad move....
He was late today.
See my post above with the link to the news article.
According to the Wire Story
he was late Monday. But they could be wrong.
The Tribune appears to say...
that Patterson was late today, Tuesday. Could be a problem of syntaxis. Go figure.

http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2007/09/big-z-i-love-th.html"target="_ blank"

I would probably trust the Tribune,
plus because of the holiday, if feels like Monday.
It is
Sam FULD.
Damn Patterson!
Why would you be late?! Ugh.

Oh well. Why not call up Colvin? Because they are in a "pennent race"? Or because it would ruin his track?

Because he is like Corey?
I know, I know, fire away, people!

does anyone know
If Trachsel still pitches at the speed of frozan molasses?
Trachssel
throws more slowly than an Amish buggy on a state highway...but unfortunately not as well as others slowballers like Moyer, Maddux, or Wakefield...
Trachsel not Trachssel...
SORRY.

Now, let's go Cubs!  Give Penny a solid beating!  Wake up bats!  Wake up the leather!  Come on now!

I trust you mean the speed of the pitches
and not Traschel's insane habit of doing everything to AVOID throwing the actual ball TO THE PLATE ? Just being my usual Maddux obsessed self because he is anything but slow. He throws the fatest games in baseball even if his fastballs are slow. Traschel throws dozens of balls to first and Maddux basically none. Hmm lets see which one is doing better.  ?
Yes,
I meant the speed of the pitches...Maddux is one of the top two or three pitchers of the past 20 years....
Is there any rain forecasted for tonight?
:-)
No
only a 100% chance of mini minute delays between pitches in the top of the 1st inning with the percentage dropping as the evening goes on.
I would like to see Pie
in there at least once a week.
Murton needs to be boo'd
the next time this bonehead let's a ball skip by him, the next time he bobbles a ground ball base hit, the next time he goes to pick up the ball and kicks it 5 times, the next time he runs into the CF on a routine fly ball the CF is calling for it, the next time he can't hit the cut off man because he's too busy freaking out and just heaves the ball toward the infield.

This guy is clueless in the OF and the Cubs need to start booing his terrible defensive lapses so he knows he's screwing up, like the Cub faithful did to Carlos yesterday.

Watch out
I brought this up yesterday and got pounced for being negative.  You are right on though.  I love Murton's bat but he should only be used in pinch hitting situations from here on out.  This summer we need to find an American League team who wants to work him as a DH.
Hey LEMON -
Think maybe you need a reality check....

Murton only hit HR's to spark the team in BOTH wins this last weekend....(oh yeah...forgot about that, eh?)

And Murton doesn't get paid a FRACTION of what Z gets paid.

Talk about clueless...

Too bad in the NL
there is no DH and you have to play both offense and Defense, duh. Talk about clueless. Murton's only future in MLB is as a DH. DUH.
Is that the BEST you can do?
what are ya...a CARDS fan??
Ahhh
so, the booing is limited to higher paid athletes?

Wow, ok, didn't know that was a guidline in the "rules of booing" handbook. Nice.

so, the booing is limited to higher paid athletes?
No...you're just lame and weak...
lame and weak?
HAHA lame and weak? If you insist, dude.
If you insist, dude
Apparently it is YOU who insists on being that way...which is why you keep posting and stirring up trouble with your doom and gloom...
Murton
Are you sure that Murton knows what a cut-off man even is???
Lots of nonsense
about a guy that isn't even starting tonight.
See comments like this
are the reason why Cub fans are getting worse.

So you don't think Murton knows about his problems in the outfield.. so when we boo him he will think to himself? Wow I need to turn into Vlad and start being a better outfielder overnight. This is where it draws between being a human being and being superman. Murton isn't good in the outfield. Booing him will not make it better. Hell, the only thing it does is makes him worse.

Now Zambrano IS a good pitcher. He can be the best pitcher in the MLB if he got his mind right. He has the ability to change his habits and develop his talent. 2 different situations.

booing your own team
doesn't solve anything..
wrong
Expressing displeasure with your team DOES affect things. Think the Cubs would have spent $300 million last offseason if the stands had been full in September and if the White Sox hadn't gotten better ratings?
according to the "Pile on Zambrano"
Diary, that's why he should've been boo'd. You know, to let him know he made a mistake. THat's why Murton should be reminded the next time he kicks one in the OF. It's in the handbook, don't ya know.
Penny for your thoughts?
Nah, just the losing pitcher.

Go Cubs!!!

It's gonna get ugly tonight.
Penny will shut down the Cubs and the Cub faith will have countless hours to kill in Wrigleyville getting liquered up and will be getting hostile and the boo birds will start by the 5th inning.

 Dodgers 8
 Cubbies 3

Gotta hope the Brewers fall to the Pirates again, only  possibility of a silver lining for tonight.

And a new low has been reached
Yowza.
Truth hurts
That's what's going to happen tonight. It sucks, but it's the truth. I've seen this movie a million times.

I've seen this movie a million times
Yeah....and we've seen YOURS twice that amount and it's STILL the same old bad rerun...
I apologize
I was just informed that when Cub fans at Wrigley Boo a player, they're actually saying "BOOOOO-ze".
Actually...
It's Boo-urns.  Now, can we move on from this conversation.  We have a loss to watch!
I was just informed
You mean MIS informed, don't you?

You should quit while you're behind....

I've never seen such lame-ness...

I can't help this but...
it's pretty "Lame" to continually reuse the word lame in all of your "smackdowns".  Sad...

Come on, get out a thesaurus.

I can't help this
You're right....you can't.

Mind your own business....wasn't talkin' to you anyway.

what kind of person...
joins a forum only to be combative?
A furious one?
Misinformed?
So you're saying the sentence should read?

I was just MISinformed that when Cub fans at Wrigley Boo a player, they're actually saying "BOOOOO-ze".

Really? I guess you're right. I mean, someone who uses the word "lame" 5 times in 4 posts, certainly must know the english language very well.

uses the word "lame" 5 times in 4 posts
Repetition is what it usually takes for the slow ones like yourself.

I'd be happy use a different, more effective method for you if you'd like, since you still aren't getting it...

The good vibes are out tonite i see
The good vibes are out tonite i see
LOL!
Hey hawk....waddup in Lynn-town?   :-)
lol not much Blue!
Just waiting for the woman to get home, and enjoying the cool weather! What are you up to man?
Just waiting for the woman to get home
Mine's already home -
As for the weather, I'll be glad when the sun returns tomorrow...   :-)
Sheesh
Back and forth, back and forth.  What do these people get out of this bickering at each other?
I'd say at least wait...
for the game to start so we can have something to argue about! :P
What do these people get out of this bickering
Absolutely nothin'.

Only difference, is these clowns come in here with their doom and gloom insults, and I come back in defence.

I really do have better things to do though, especially since the game has started.

So I will....

yeah i feel ya
I really enjoy all the players on the team this year. It's been a fun season, hopefully it won't end for awhile.
1 pitch, 1 out
good!
1 down, 26 pitches to go
Or atleast, I hope!
Trachsel is on a 27 pitch count?
Wow, I wasn't expecting much out of him, but was hoping he could go longer than 27 pitches.

I know you meant outs, just bustin y'er stones.

Nah...I'm no troll...
Just killing time while waiting for the game.  I am actually tired of all the back and forth, so I thought that I could point out (in a non-preachy way) that this kind of stuff is pointless.  Kind of like chewing people out who use profanity in a negative way while ignoring those who use it in a supportive tone.  Dropping bombs either offends or it doesn't, but the context shouldn't be able to get some people a free pass.  And...I'm done.

On a serious note, how do you create a signature?

2 down...
pretty effective, SO FAR
I for one forgive Z
ws mad as hell at him last night, but I understand that he simply made mistake.  God knows we have all said things we later regret.  Hope this story ends here, we have a pennet race to worry about and not some stupid soap opera.

Lets go get em!!!!!

"we have a pennet race to worry about"
YES! And a Pennant Race, too!
ack!
come on Aramis..
Speaking of free passes from earlier...
Has anyone noticed that we are getting the old error prone Ramirez lately.  He moves like a tank out there.
he's banged up
It's not that surprising.
It's been awhile since we've had a 1,2,3 inning
hasn't it?
1st inning that is
don't you love it?
when people post negative stuff saying "well this hasn't happened..." and it happens the split second after its posted
Actually...
It still wasn't a 1,2,3 inning.

On another note, how do you create a signature?

lol i was going to ask if that
counts as a 1,2,3 inning!
Love a nice pick off in our favor!
Love a nice pick off in our favor!
Yep...
AND...

I believe that means only three batters logged an out...so that's TECHNICALLY a 1-2-3 1st, right?

:-)  (wink)

Good way to start!
Good job Trachs
Hill, were you watching that???
Nice inning, Trachzzzzzzzel
you just take your time.
Was that a Cubs pitcher
watching out for opposing baserunners?
I believe it was
Nice change of pace, no?
That was solid...
didn't seem to take forever, for one thing.  On gameday it also appeared that Trachsie was getting squeezed a little.
frickin Lloyd Braun
Darn those leadoff hits!!!
best revenge right there
n/t
Damn those leadoff hit*s*!
Just keep making contact boys
That's how you beat the penny waiting for change.
wow that was low
Sorry Blue but...
1-2-3 inning
An inning in which a pitcher faces only three batters and retires them all without any reaching base. Also named "Three up, three down"

That's two tonight.  One more, and you will have gone down 1, 2, 3.

Wink--

Hey mc-whatever you are...
I wasn't talking to you....care to mind your own business?

Thanks.

crapp
come on Lee..
DANGIT....
Is he a DP machine or what? He keeps rolling over on the pitch...
braun homers in mil.
ankiel doubles in a run in st. louis. both teams lead.
Anyone else watching on TV...
...notice that the guy in the pink hat is back?
he's there nearly every night,
or at least he has been for the last month. i'd like to have those seats.
He looks like...
...Tommy Lasorda's less successful brother.
he has better seats than tommy.
Yeah
The big guy just to the right of the center field camera's view?
come on captain chubbs....
hit us a dinger!!!
Well if nothing else...
...Penny is throwing a lot of pitches.
DLee
Needs a rest.  Still love the guy, but he needs a break.  He never gets one.  Also, Penny already seems to be getting a little bigger zone the T-sell
Penny doesn't seem to be even coming close
to the strike zone
damn...
...DeRosa hit that hard.
well, that's a lousy start to the evening.
Sue's POOPIN'
in the 1st!
Please...please...
Do something here!!, this could have been huge if not for the DP.
damn...
1 inning, five left on base!!
The Collar is tight folks...
the collar is tight!
i just wish the cardinals would lose 11-0
every day.
In heaven, they do.
lmao nice idea of heaven!
So,
using my powers of deduction, such as they are, you just implied that there are no Cardinal fans in heaven?
That is correct.
I'll have to tell my co-worker
that I have proof he is going to hell.
direct satelite link up
so we can watch them in hell.
There shouldn't be...
they are the most smarmy fans in any game.  I can't stand them.  Sadly, I have to put up with them on a daily basis.  Best fans in baseball my ass.
loud, sustained applause
3 LOB...
They say that baseball is a tough game to play when you are stressed (playing tight).  It just seems that when the cubs start doing something positive, we get super excited/nervous/needy/vocal, and they can't come through.  St. Louis always seems to play relaxed and easy.  If they take the division I am going to kill someone.
Well, maybe we shouldn't
get that way.

And I don't think STL plays any differently.

Hey folks - MRFURIOUS = MRDURDEN
IMHO
I think you're
on to something there.
Huh?
I am not attacking you personally with any name calling there Blue, just pointing out your errors, when you make patronizing comments.  Trust me, I want the Cubs to do as well as anyone else, and I am not being negative for the sake of being negative.  Just commenting on the things that I see.  My opinions are meant to be constructive not destructive.
We've discussed this b/f
but shouldn't the "veteran" playoff presence on the team serve as a calming effect.

You know - keep things loose?

It should...
but if they are veteran to this team, then they feel it, and if they are new to the team (but old to the league) the vibes aren't hard to pick up.  Fans booing regularly sure doesn't help.
Not me.
I ONLY boo Will FREAKIN' Oh-Man! and Joe West. That's COWBOY Joe.

Oh - I boo opponents AND Angel Hernandez - the worst strike zone in MLB.

Oh, and, - I DID boo Jacque Jones sparingly in April and May, but I am reformed.

But I will confess I booed Todd Hundley mercilessly.

I do boo
the umpires on a regular basis. I also boo Violet Palmer of the NBA. I can't stand her.
Can't argue too much there...
I understand Ohman, and Hundley.  Joe West and Angel Hernandez (not just the strike zone, but the stare down).  Those two are the worst...arguably.  I never really got the J Jones thing.  He got a bad rap for no good reason.  Just like Juan Encarnacion in STL.  Fans here hated him.  They feel like crap now.  A side note about J Jones: I saw him in STL when he made an impressive catch of a Pujols ball.  I was in the first row, right over his head, and I started cheering him on.  He looked at me like I was being sarcastic (and I had Cubs gear on).  I hope we didn't ruin the guy.
fans have every right to boo
And we SHOULD boo in certain situations. When the Cubs were awful last year, fans booed, didn't go to the ballpark and watched the Cubs so little on TV that the Sox had better ratings.

And what happened? The Trib spent $300 million and the Cubs are now in first place. I, for one, am happy that we booed -- I think it helped the Cubs bring out the check book.

Z deserved everything he got yesterday. I'm hoping yesterday might get him to use his head a little more.

Not gonna argue about that either...
he really showed that he deserved it with the walk off antics and the post game comments.  He is a meathead anyway.  However, booing last year (when they just stunk) and this year (when they may MAY get it done) are two different things.
Gonzalez looks like he's been in
a couple knife fights
Any RCN customers in Chicago
Having trouble getting channel 37, CSN?
Oh, my god
Great defense, guys!!!
ooh baby
sounded lucky there. nice dp. some lucky defense that inning?
that inning looked very scary
but turned around in a flash.
What a great defensive inning!
In fact, that's two pretty memorable innings for Trachsel.
Thats how you get out of that!
Hawk - I was thinking a DP would be nice....
I just didn't think it would be THAT particular type of one...   LOL   :-)
Not to mention the fielders choice
for the first out!
Not to mention the fielders choice
Oy...     :-)
Yep - four on base in the 1st.
2 with the GIDP and two walks.
Go Cubs!
Wish I could see this game, though Pat and Ron are doing a pretty good job.
I think the world of Pat's game calling...
If/when they ever get a new play by play guy for TV, I would hope that they consider him.  How long will he stay on the radio side?
Until you uncover your real
identity. ;-)
LOL
And here I thought MrDurden was banished to the island for misfit posters. Guess not.
I do not fall into any easy category...
but I get chastized for falling out of the accepted click here.  I call them as I see them.
Ok Ok...
I'll admit it.  It's me Ron Santo.  I am posting the board between screams and groans.

Hey, how do you guys create the signature (or do you type it in every time?).

You are
a busy guy then.
zzzzzz...
bats are dead... damn that lee DP in the first...
Dead for the last month
Here we go ...
As sure as the swallows come back to Capistrano.

Batters 7, 8 and 9 were up last inning.

Relax. Good God.

I'm really, REALLY trying to control myself here ...

I'm not whining or prediciting
all I'm saying is that we've had little offense for the last month. Check the stats, see when the Cubs last scored 7 or 8 runs. They've been lucky to turn it on late in games, but only because the pitching kept them in games.
= predicting
My response was to
the OP.

Saying "bats are dead" after one inning isn't very astute analysis, is it?

Is anyone getting CSN channel 37 on RCN cable
I'm getting no signal, and its driving me nuts!
Pirates have
tied it up.
Nobody likes CB Bucknor
How does this guy keep his job?
Does anyone know...
who the guy in the front row that always wears a pink Cubs hat and a green Cubs shirt is?  Is he a scout or something?
no idea....
but he's usually had a few drinks by the 5th inning.
LOL
I remember him.  A few games back he was really going to town on the home plate ump.  It was funny as hell.
high and tight...
was that as close to his head as it looked on Gameday?
I got a shitty connection on mlb.com
Hawk....I'm tellin' ya...
Name a place and time in Lynn-town and we'll hook up and who knows?

The wives might even become buddies and YOU AND I can watch games...    :-)

If there were any places in this
damn town that would play a cubs game instead of the mariners! lol
There IS dude....MY house!
I will be watching all DA Bearsss games too...
Sunday the
Cubs at 12:35 p.m. and the Bears at 3:15 p. m. Doesn't get any better than that.
Doesn't get any better than that
Word.
mine too
it keeps buffering and hanging up on me
Alright Steve!
Keep it up!!!
Is anyone going
to the game tomorrow night?  I'm heading up there from Peoria to see my 2nd game this year.

I thought I remember seeing it was a bobblehead night....could it be???

Hey
I know someone going to the game from Peoria tomorrow night.  Are you going with a group?
If you call 5 people
a group, then yes.  Not sure where the seats are yet.
Anyone in your group named...
Jon?
Yes
indeed.
Without saying his last name...
I believe that it is a nice anagram for a inappropriate distinction of a woman.  Am I right?
I think that you may be accompanying...
my brother in law.  Cool
I would love some help
I will admit my stupidity if someone can let me know how to create a signature line.
Click on MrFurious's Page at top right
then go to your profile and make your sig.
I don't have a signature so I'm not sure if this
works, but if you look under menu on the top right of the page and click on "your name"'s page and then click on "my profile" on the next page it allows you to type in a signature.
It's not
being stupid. Just click on your name in the right hand column that says MrFurious page and then go to profile. You should be able to make a sig then.
I will admit my stupidity
Ummm.....

Nope....

I'm not going there....

That's smart...
any help though?
wow
does Fonz swing at everything?  I know that he does from watching it on TV, but watching it pitch by pitch on gameday is hilarious.  Are these even close?
there you go
a scorcher, eh...
Where was that in the first. Dang
Let's get him in!!
D'OH
bummer
Thanks for the help everyone.
That has been driving me nuts for a while.
for that we helped?
can't you do any better?
I live in St. Louis
and that is one of my favorite simpsons quotes that pretty much sums up my feelings for this state.  I have to put up with a ton of abuse from Mizzou, Card, and Rams fans.  So...it will stick for now.

Everybody's can't be the awesomely clever Prince Fielder line.  That one will live forever.

So my little girl...
...just turned five months old today, and she's VERY fussy from teething. So what puts a crying baby to sleep with ease?

That's right, folks, three innings of the Trachselnator. Thanks, Steve Trachsel!

Have any
Ora-Jel? It works great. Other wise maybe childrens Tylenol.
Tried Ora-Gel.
Didn't work half as well as the Human Raid Delay.
Sorry.
Wish I had more to offer.
Ora-Jel? It works great.
Naw....just give 'er a XANAX....
SHE'LL sleep...    :-)
Did Lee just grab his ribs...
after stretching out for that ball?
cardinals
just get a clutch 2 out bases loaded double from duncan, lead 5-2.
anybody else see
D-Lee grab his ribs after scooping that throw?
Yeah and
now he just fell on them.
cubs, not good at the running game.
Or
the hitting game.
ugh.
i hope this night gets a lot better.
crap
poop.
running on Kendall pays dividends.
We can get
that run and more back. Come on Cubs!!!
Wish we could get a comfortable lead...
so I could relax and enjoy the game!
those days are over my friend.
This will be a month of blood pressure spikes.
I wonder...
what is our ERA with Kendall pitching compared to Koyie Hill.  If the position really is a defensive one, why did we cast him aside.  We played great (and pitched better) with him as a primary catcher.
d'ooooooh
n/t
at least the pen's rested
no one of significance was used yesterday..  hope lou has a quick hook tonight.  can't spot many runs w/ penny pitching.
Penny doesn't have his best stuff
hope we can make him pay at some point!!!
lol
santo sounded piss ward went for third... the game's mvp so far!
ok
gotta score one now.
Come on JJ
bring them home.
When Daryl Ward
is taking the extra base on you I think it's time to stop playing outfield in the major leagues.
Nobody has ever accused the Dodgers...
...of knowing how to assemble an outfield.
Tie game!!! JJ da MA-AN!!
1-1
Keep em coming Cubs!!
we'll take it....
as usual, he gets a steady diet of the outside stuff.  Go to see him make positive contact.
At least they
tied it up.
why does Kendall keep starting...
it sure doesn't appear to help the pitchers on most days.  If he doesn't hit lights out, where is the positive.  Do we have Barrett part two?

Bring back Koyie!!  It's at least fun to say!!

why does Kendall keep starting
Uhhh...prob. because Lou LIKES him starting....
ya think?

Maybe you should apply for Lou's job, and then when you're the manager you can call up your buddy Hill and start him.

In the meantime, the Kendall / Blanco combo works just fine in the big picture.

Uh yeah...
lookin' good there BlueLou.  Say, you Lou apologist you, any lucid arguments?  Or are you so far up his behind that you should spell it "BlewLou".  At least that would explain something.
Al's young son
reads this site and Al is not going to be happy with that kind of comment posted in here. Please watch what you post.
I have never used one obscenity.
Not one...ever.  Not everyone even would understand the post.  Geez.  Below the mendoza line, however, may be true.  Sorry.
I have never used one obscenity.
Does BEING obscene count?
IT'S CALLED THE MENDOZA LINE.
Look it up!
Watching this team
try to score 4 or more runs in a game can be like pulling teeth.
Penny has 66 pitches thru 4 innings
and Grady Little's still managing LA.  The Cubs have a decent shot.
I'll bet Trachsel's
loving not pitching in the AL East anymore.  C'mon Steve!!
ron sounds pretty lucid today
n/t
Come on Steve
one more out.
God damnit
you still suck Steve
Another pitcher makes us pay!
Traschel fricking sucks
why did we pick this piece of garbage up, the Cubs D has saved him ten runs.
Um, I don't
think he's pitching all that badly.
And how do you come to that conclusion, exactly?
Not to be a Debbie Downer, but Trachsel has done nothing but let the guys behind him make him look mediocre. Guys like Rich Hill may not have his "maturity," or "crafty veteran make-sportswriters-break-out-their-thesaurus" appeal, but he can actually fool a hitter now and again. Trachsel is last in strikeouts in almost any measure in the majors.

And now, tonight, he's given up three runs in five innings. How is this "not doing badly?"

If he holds the Dodgers in the sixth
that's considered a "quality start."
That doesn't mean he's pitched well.
It just means that the defense behind him has bailed him out.
Not every time
What, one stellar defensive play the whole game?
he's better than marshall's
2 innings and 5 runs.
pinch hitter
for Trachsel?
Ther damn running at will
Tracshel is too damn slow with his delivery and  forget kendall throwing.
i hate to not be upset about this
but isn't three runs through five sorta what we expected out of trachsel.  he's the kinda guy that gives up some runs, but keeps you in the game.  i'd much rather have a consistent guy like this, than a guy that can blow up like Z
Soriano
DONT SWING AT THE FIRST PITCH!

thank you.

More hacking from Fonz
how he ever gets one over the plate is beyond me. Why throw him a strike?
Why didnt he lift Trachsel
5 innings is enough theres plenty of pitching help in the pen WTF is Pinella doing!
he's actually looked pretty good
7 hits,3 runs thru 5 innings to one of the worst
offenses in the league, I guess our definition of good is much differant.
for a fifth starter?
i'll take that any day of the week
Should have pinch hit
Murton or Fontenot
I keep doing this...
...and it keeps being relevant, so here goes.

Mike Fontenot:

June: .397/.422/.679
July: .211/.269/.211
August: .208/.323/.302

Mike Fontenot is not very good at hitting. He never has been. His batting average on balls in play in June was .424, which was almost entirely based on luck.

Oh, and his stats as a pinch hitter? .231/.333/.308.

He's not very good
at playing defense either.

And I'm pretty sure CubFaninCA's post was meant as a joke.

It's tough to win games
when the offense can't score 4 or 5 runs on a consistent basis.  So frustrating.
7 pitch inning for Penny
4 to Theriot. Great patience guys.
can we score 4
gonna have to, at least.
It seems to happen
about every 3rd or 4th game.  Let's hope this is our lucky night!
Patience, grasshoppers
Good things come to those who wait.

And who's waited more than us?

Oh my god
that is a ginormous bullpen.
Nice work Steve!
3 runs in 6 innings.  I'll take that from my 5th starter any day of the week.  Now the offense has to get in gear!
And Trachsel
Turns in a quality start.

Now, it's up to the offense.

Everyone check out this diary...
Looking Back At an Early Season Lament

Good peice of writing, so comment it.  Also check out mine, it's the third comment let me know what you think...

welp, better than what
marshall would have provided....  too bad he had to face penny.
never to early to yell
LET'S GET SOME RUNS!
LET'S GET SOME RUNS
Come on Ramirez
do something.
and he did.......
woohoo
man, Ramirez scares me running
That was too close.
YEAH DARYL!
HEY HEY!
that way DW, move him to the three spot
Wow
Aggressive send.
three pitches
three men on base!!!
Just got home
and get greeted with this.

Nice.

I really don't like these evening meetings.

phat

why no PR here?
...could be the game surprised didn't put Pie in when WArd was on 2nd...coulda scored.

DP's are killing us this week so far vs. LAD dammit.

DP AGAIN!?!
gr. . . .
Rats.
It's only one run now, though.

phat

Got one back, though
Patience.
Rant on:
Why the hell do you ever slide into first? In this case he would have probably been out anyway, but why  slow yourself down and chance getting hurt? Rant off...
As the Washington Wizards play by play announcer
Steve Buchantz would say, "DAGGERRRR!!!!"

sorry bulls fans. go wiz.

stupid slide into first, c'mon JJ
we all could see this happen
so why not Lou? why not send DRose to stay outta the DP?

Yeah, I know he strikes out alot.

sac fly
do the cubs have any?
why pull Trachsel after 82 pitches?
So he sucked before
and now people are complaining because he's out of the game.

This team can't please anybody.

I don't know what I like better...
reading the complaints about this cruddy team, or reading NBF's complaints about the complaints about this cruddy team.
Yep
If somebody said they should pull him, he would have said the opposite....
Because we have 38 relievers...
...and some of them have to pitch at some time or they're going to get bench rot?
Double Play # 74
Oh for a lousy sac fly.
Subbing Pie for Ward last inning...
...keeps looking better and better and better.
Too early for that
You want Ward's bat up there late, if you can. He can change the game with one swing.
I dunno....
I like Ward but from hitting, baserunning and defense Ward is a liability in the last two.  I think you try to make hay when you can, then you also have a much better defender in the last third of the game.
come on, kerry
let's keep it close!
Mopup
Wood is a mopup guy at this stage of his career.  Period.  No reason he should be in a close game.  At all.
completely agree
he gets hit up for a couple runs when he comes into close game.
That foul ball...
gave me bad chills
As soon as we get close this happens.
for this we pulled Trachsel?
Lou did a Ned Yost there. No reason to pull him after 82 pitches and the bottom of the order coming up.
btw, i haven't been listening during breaks...
they're not playing those seattle sutton ads, are they? man, those get old...
Russel Branyan off the scrap heap
hits a HR for the RedBirds on an 0-2 pitch.

6-2.

Could someone pull our pitchers aside...
...and inform them that Juan Pierre is not very good at hitting? Maybe Jones or Murton could go out there and give them some details.
that might take the cake
as the most ridiculous post i've ever read. sorry man
He's got a .673 OPS.
That's, uh, astounding mediocre for an outfielder.
But on the other hand...
he's fast and wears a uniform 3 sizes too big. Too bad he's not really short, then he'd have the Eckstein trifecta!
get off the mound Wood!!!
DLee should have needed to field that ball
Ohman is up.
That's not good.
Will Ohmans up in the bullpen
I feel soooo much better.
This is looking more and more like 2004
Scott Downs anyone?
You're not really comparing
Scott Downs with Brad Penny, are you?

If so, you're showing a lot of ignorance.

Yeah...
that's like comparing our Cubs to a playoff caliber team.
No, obviously not.
That was worse, because they were beat by awful pitchers. What I'm comparing is the crushing plays like the bunt singles, and the hits and RBIs by the opposing pitchers. Bad fundamentals.
It wasn't that obvious
We'll see what happens here the last three innings.
bad game by Lou
should not have brought Wood in, and 3 double plays should tell him he needs to get the runners started .
Cub Killers
Are there two other ex-Cubs that have absolutely killed the Cubs over the entire course of their careers more than Luis Gonzalez and Juan Pierre? Including, and especially when they were actually Cubs, these guys have consistently hurt them.  Gonzalez in Houston and now in LA and Pierre in Florida and now LA.  And as I said, both were awful, or worse, in their stints in Chicago.  And now that I think of it, add Jeff Blauser to the mix.
Gonzalez in Houston?
you mean Arizona?
No
Gonzalez murdered the Cubs while playing for the Astros.  He kept it up in Arizona but scorched them in Houston well before he juiced up in Arizona.
Even if the Cubs lose
I'd like to see them score 4 runs in a game.  Sort of like a moral victory.
Again, I ask:
why did Lou pull Trachsel?
Say Goodnight Gracie
Tough to be optimistic the way we are playing.
We will break out of this offensive slump sooner or later and start to score some runs.  That will solve a lot of our problems.  Hopefully!!
Woods making me nervous
this whole frickin team deserves to be booed
except for DWard.
Yep, just like making a big trade...
...for Scott Linebrink. Thanks, Kerry Wood.
great
voice.

...

How sad is this.
Not as sad as my inability to stop following them.  God this hurts.
Baseball Inequality
Zach Johnson's 7th inning > Kerry Wood's 7th inning
come on fonteee
Mike Fontenot up to pinch hit!
Someone stab me, please.
after a walk, Sori 1st pitch swinging?
My money is on "yes."
I guess I was wrong.
good for Fonz.
re: Sori
Only if it's in the same zip code.
was that a strike?
bring your cajun brother home.
please.
2nd pitch
I guess Fonzie waited until the second pitch to pop out.
way to make Penny work there
hacking away after the walk. That'll win games for you......
This team
can't score.  2 or 3 runs a game just doesn't win many baseball games.
Soooooooo...
...is now a bad time to mention how much I hate that Heiniken commercial?
O.K. - we now know that
the three top teams in the West are better than the Cubs.

The three top teams in the East are better than the Cubs.

And the team is a stones throw away from losing their grip on "First Place" in the Comedy Central.

What would they be exaclty winning IF they lose their way into the Division crown?

They would be the 2006 STL Cardinals.
But the St. Louis Cardinals 2006
Had Carpenter and Pujols.

What else do you need?

Where is everyone yelling at the negative posters?
Sure were out in droves earlier.  I wasn't even being negative.  Sheesh.
Ohman in, ballgame
Is that barking I hear?
Maybe they're just all sick of you
and your ilk.

You all should love nights like this.

Hey, now...
Why lump me in there?  Do your research.  I am in neither extreme camp.  I am not a basher.  I am not a rose colored glass wearer either.  Patience...
You are a middle-of-the-roader
Patience, indeed ...
I will take that, I guess...
is there any way to be that doesn't result in mockery from one base or the other.  And...just so we are straight, a Middle of the Roader is not a fair weather fan.  I like to think of it as being a realist.  Not an optimist, not a pessimist.  Just a realist.
I am not a basher
No....you're just obscene...
Your above post proved it.
Sorry...
I genuinely am.  I was becoming frustrated by the patronizing.  The 1,2,3 inning (wink) error.  The high and mighty arguments/comments with nothing to back them up (sticking with Kendall why?  Because Lou likes it?  Penetrating vision).  Sadly, in the heat of the moment (can that exist in a bulletin board?) I came up with something nowhere near as witty as I originally thought.  Still, no profanities were uttered, and only adults would understand it (especially if no one called attention to it).  Either way...poor taste.  Nuff said.  I hope we come back (though...it doesn't look too good).
The 1,2,3 inning (wink) error
If you would leave comments made to specific other people alone, you'd be better off.

And since you obviously didn't GET ti, that "1-2-3 inning" thing was a friggin' JOKE!

Again - stay out of things that aren't directed to you and you'll be better served.

Ok...
I honestly thought that it was directed at me.  If you go back up, it would be hard to argue that I shouldn't have assumed that it was directed at me.  It directly followed a post mentioning that it wasn't 1,2,3.  Either way...truce.
Because Lou likes it? Penetrating vision
And because I state that I believe in Lou's ability to manage the team one HECK of a lot more than I do yours, is no reason to insult.

And if you think you can do better, then that's why I suggested you apply for his job....
I mean...I'm sure you'd have a shot at it...

To use your own words:  penetrating vision....

Not...

NOW....
I'm done venting.
Well...you should have stopped a while ago then...
I am not a Lou Hater at all.  But where is his genius in all of this.  He has guided a team that the Trib (and some new owner) has committed over 400 million in guaranteed money to, to just over .500.  In the weakest division in the majors.  Even in this last post, you contribute nothing constructive.  Where is your back up information?  Gut feelings?  Give me stats man.  Give me history.  Give me some defense.  Just give me something.  And also, any comment as to why I shouldn't have assumed that your earlier comment wasn't directed at me?  Or are you just going to gloss over that and suggest that I apply to the Chicago Sun-Times?

To paraphrase a wise man...Lame.

"And I'm Free..."
free Fallin'...

Here I go tomorrow to plunk down my Visa card for Playoff tickets!

At least there is an option for a refund if they crap out.

Schedule isn't favorable to the Cubs right now
They're playing a decent team and the Brewers and Cards are playing lower-division teams.

Long way to go.

At some point...
...this team's going to have to beat a team that doesn't suck or I don't exactly know what the point of this whole exercise is.
my god, ohman sucks.
he should be fired. meanwhile, these last couple of days make me want to puke.
in the refrigerator!
This ball game is over, the door is closed and the lights are out.

And most likely this is the end of the season.

I wsan't going to stir things up
But after this comment, I will:

Idiot. Idiot, idiot, idiot.

Bruce!
You promised!

Take a breath, man!

No name calling...

I apologize, Eman
But statements like that are infuriatingly dumb, don't you agree?

Now, back to the game.

i don't agree. those posts don't bother
me at all. let them vent. this is a disgusting ballgame and series.
The 'probably the end of the season' part
was intolerable.
why?
he doesn't know what he's talking about; it's just his current feel. personally, i'll reserve my predictions until the end of the cardinals series, though it'll probably still be too close to call.

i know this: the cubs look pathetic, and it's kind of an important stretch. then again, can you really expect this team to go from the outhouse to the penthouse in one year?

I agree...
with buck.  If this isn't depressing then we don't care, or we are that desensitized.
Yep. Agreed.
Let's just keep on the non-insult vibe.

I fully sympathize that this is REALLY infuriating and frustrating.

Why can't the team turn it on and make a run??

AArrrggghhh!

Really infuriating and frustrating,
Hi Eman, welcome to the wonderful world of being a Cubs fan!

I defy anybody here to give me three good reasons why they still believe this team can win the Central.

No "I'm a positive person" or "I still believe" rubbish. I want good solid reasons.

Because everybody else sucks more.
Seriously, it's not even that hard to figure out.
OK, here it is
Good pitching

Good managing

Good hitting (although it's been off and on lately)

Nope, wrong, sorry
The Cardinals, maybe the Brewers, are winners, i.e., they rarely beat themselves. The Cubs are an industry of beating themselves, and being wacked by others.

It looks like both the Brewers and Cards will win tonight and pick up a full game on the Cubs. Let's see where have I seen this before, oh yeah, 1969, 1971, 1984, 1989, 1998, 2003, 2004... gee you'd think the Cubs had a thing going with losing.

I agree with you...
afterall....you know infuriatingly dumb better than anyone here.
OK, the insults are even now
You happy? Can we continue here, please?
Thanks.
I'm sure you feel great about yourself.
So...will Valdez be running?
Don't start stirring things up Not Burce!
Things have been pretty quiet tonight.
Gonzales single off of Ohman
"He left a pitch out over the plate" as Bob Brenly says.

I don't seem to enjoy watching Ohman pitch.

Don't we have other pitchers?

Maybe Lou
is torturing this numbskull on purpose?
JJ should
have had that one.
Ward shoulda too
on that RBI 2B by LaRoche. That was an awful route to the ball.
come on
Ohman is hurt, u know . . . his lame ass excuse for sucking . . .leave him alone
aaaand
the infield is in......
Now Ohman is getting booed
So will he go off on the fans, too?
he can
but he'll have to apologize tomorow
seriously what is Lou doidn bringing
this piece of shit in the game, we send EP down for being late but lets a guy who bashed the training staff om the radio back on the mound and so he can put another game out of reach.
What did we learn from the recent Ohman outings?
Have we learned yet not to use Ohman ever, ever, ever again?
that he should be fired
and it should be humiliating and disgraceful.
We said that about Eyre
and he turned it around. He was just wasted in a blowout yesterday.
OH - MAN
When Lou brought him in yesterday, someone commented that the game was out of reach -- we were down by four. Four runs to me is not out of reach. But Lou brings him in.
I mentioned that bringing OH-MAN back was bad enough considering his lame comments about his supposed injury. Then he delays showing up at Iowa.
So what does Lou do? Bring his lame butt back here and instead of having him shine shoes, Lou puts him in. What does he do yesterday? Give up a hit to a left hander and allows two runs to score.
So what does Lou do? Bring him in again tonight when we are down by three. What does he do again? Allows more to score.
FOR CRYING OUT LOUD !!! STOP USING THIS BUM !!!
.185 BA Ramon Martinez up to hit
bases clearing double anyone?

do I hear Grand slam?

looks like the five games with the cardinals
in the next week or so are probably going to tell the story. i'm guessing the games will be close. hopefully, we can sneak away with 3 or 4 wins.
We have agreed to not insult
each other! Posting your opinions are one thing - please let's not get into personal bashing.
Uh oh
I heard some boos.  Looks like about 10 diaries will go up tomorrow lamenting the "good old days" before 2003 when Cub fans supposedly never booed.
Ohman...
doesn't deserve to be booed.  In fact, he doesn't deserve to be pitching at the ML level.
LOL!!
I have been saying this for months!!

If he was not left handed, he would be selling DVD's at Blockbuster.

Oh-Man!

he'd be running the vacuum.
The way Lou looked that might be
the last time we ever Ohman in a game for a long time
re: The way Lou looked tonight...
Good.
This game definitely
has the feel of one that we have no chance of winning. They just really seem flat the last two nights. Keep this up and we will be in third place by Friday.
Oh, man!
Just got home.

Oh, man!

Uh oh.
phat
Welcome to
the Cubs!
Time to
call it a night. Better luck tomorrow.
so how are all you kool aid drinkers tonight
ill give you the blind reality, this team is not that good, they are .500 or slightly above at best, they had one stretch in the year where they played out of there minds and it was against shitty, losing teams, so everyone built up that we were this quality team that would continue winning, first off the pitching has been solid lately besides z for the most part, we have 0 power to drive anyone in, if pitchers get lee and ramirez out they can basically coast through our lineup at will, if we do get into the playoffs and right now the way things are going it appears wed have the padres away for the first round, i would be very very intimidated the way we've played them and how damn good there pitching is, im a huge cubs fan and i dont "hate" the team, im just trying to give some reality into what we can expect this year
Conjecture
not "reality."

If it's so distressing, shut it off and come back tomorrow, if you want.

It's one thing to boo Big Z...
...another to boo Will Ohman -- it's another thing entirely to boo a September callup making his major league debut in a bases loaded jam.
Yes..
and they are, in that order...

Appropriate....

Long Overdue...

Not totally unexpected.

Why are all the ugly ones at home?
They deserve to be booed for what they put the fans through.
I think DLee is giving the rookie
some advice on how to hit into rally killing double plays.
Bases loaded with nobody out...
we live for this.
Good for Hart
That's good.

phat

I kinda get the feeling that Lou...
...is pretty much conceeding this game.
Nice...
Nice job by the kid there.  Keep it up.
That's gotta be weird
for Kendall and Hart. They just met.

phat

Consenting adults...
who just met have done far weirder things...
lol
funny stuff man, FUNNY STUFF!!!
If I didn't know better I'd almost think
Lou wasn't too eager to win this game.  Really strange decisions...bringing in Ohman, bringing in a nervous rookie with bags loaded and no out.  Well, Hart seems to have a lot of heart, so maybe this will be OK.
I really wonder if Soriano bribes...
...all the third bases coaches in the league. What? Huh?
heh
phat
One thing about Sori...
Don't run on him. What an arm.
Yeah
why does anybody run on that guy?

phat

how bout a 5 spot?
little crooked number action.
Good job Hart and Soriano!
Nice way to get out of that jamb
for the kid.

That could have been just terrifying.

phat

yep, nothing worse than being locked in.
Kevin Hart...
... Standing O all the way from Spotsylvania, VA!
Maybe, just Maybe....
stranger things have happened guys. That inning swung the momentum.
Here's hoping
You never know, I guess.
When will they learn
that Soriano has a cannon throw?
Lets go Cubs!!!!
I'm tired of all this negative talk. I'm done with this site.
If only you should be tired of anything
you should be tired of our pathetic offense. If you are getting tired of reading genuine frustrations expressed by fans then please don't watch OhMan pitch as you may slit your wrists.
Our offense has hear rumors of
five run innings, but doesn't believe they exist.
Three...
  1.  Good/Very Good Starting Pitching
  2.  Very Good lineup (they must get it together, though)
  3.  An excellent road team.
The converse to that:  If someone can't come up with three, or believes the season to be over, why aren't they watching "Mr. 3000" reruns on HBO instead of following the game?
Um....no.
  1. only for a 2 month stretch after the break
  2. are you even watching the same team as me? The holes have holes this year. Can't hit lefties, for power, or situationally.
  3. I suppose we'll have to hope we won't get home field advantage for the playoffs.
Really?
They've had good starting pitching for only two months? Seriously?

Have you been watching some other team?

very good starting pitching...yes
decent starting pitching...almost all year

You call Z/Marquis/Marshall's efforts in August very good?

They HAVE THE TALENT to be very very good, but they lack the consistency (yeah Joe!) they need to carry the team with the Hot/Cold running offense.

Um?
Why don't you just go for the gold and call me a moron?  It's cool if you disagree, but addressing others with "um" shows your maturity level.
Really?
The term UM is now an insult? Sheesh...I..ooops..is sheesh still okay?
Yes,
it is.  As is "sheesh".

However, you did not use "UM" in its most insulting form:  referring to the college in Ann Arbor, MI.

well.
  1. starting pitching, one word: consistency. needed.
  2. lineup: very little patience. very few walks. very few homeruns. bad at the little things, bunts, sac flies, etc.
  3. pretty good on the road, not excellent.
in sum: they have a chance; they're competitive thanks to a crappy division; i'm satisfied. let's get lucky.
C'mon Cubs!
4 runs.  That's all I ask for tonight.  A win would be a bonus.
Forget it
7 DP's in 2 games.  That's ridiculous.
What's up
with all the double plays?

phat

Lou, what the ?!?!
Why can't Lou get it?  Ohman only pitches to lefties.  What is so hard to get about that?  After Ohman lost Gonzo to a base hit, he should never have faced Martin.  It is just a lead off hit, the inning can still be saved by getting a righty in there.  Then he compounds his mistake after Martin gets the double, by having Ohman walk Loney the lefty?  You would have been better off walking Martin, and letting Ohman face Loney!  Then, to bring in a rook in his first appearance as a big leaguer with the bases loaded?  Wha...?
POST GAME
No matter the outcome, I wish one media person would have the cahonies to ask Lou after the game why in the hell did he bring in Ohman?
And I would hope that Lou would give a straight answer. I for one cannot even grasp a remote conscious thought as to why Ohman was brought in.
And Please --
Don't tell me he came in to get the lefty our. Ohman hasn't got a lefty out since he grabbed his left one in the john.
Ohman's terribleness only cost us 1 run
It was Kerry Wood that put the game out of reach and killed momentum, as well as confidence with his inability to get outs.
Pulling Trachsel was the problem
The problem
is an offense that can't score more than 2 lousy runs.  You won't win many games scoring that few.
Bingo
Bruce..
teams do not score 8 runs in all 162 games. You show a noticeable lack of baseball acumen.
Who said eight runs a game?
I didn't.

But more than two usually is necessary.

Only One Run ??
That's the problem -- only one run. Each and every time -- only one run, only one hit.
Wood didn't pitch on Monday, he did not crap on his team the way Ohman did, he didn't take the late plane or train to Iowa when he was sent there.
There is not one -- I repeat one -- redeeming quality about Ohman -- pitching or competitor wise. The guy does not deserve to be on this team and again I say -- why in the hell did the Cubs bring him back and then Lou use him in a situation where he failed miserably most of the season.
I only have one question
ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
DAAAAAAA Bearsss da bearsss da bearsss da bearsss
The bandwagoners can clear out now
That would be very, very welcome.

And no jumping back on later.

you really think there are a lot of cubfan
bandwagoners on here?

i'm guessing most of us are diehards. i mean, i schedule my life around the games.

I think there's a fair amount
judging from the comments I see here on a regular basis.

They often show a lack of perspective and a lack of baseball acumen, IMHO.

I am no baseball sage by any stretch. Nor a Kool-Aid drinker. But I do know better than make "season's over" comments the first time the Cubs lose two in a row, if indeed that's how it works out tonight.

you really don't
understand those comments? they are of the moment, reactionary. that's all. that's what happens when things are going bad and you have an immediate post dump like this site.
I understand it
but if you're going to post something for others to read, don't embarrass yourself. Like saying the game's over when there's six innings to go.
How 'bout now?
4 runs down with 3 out to go?
Knock yourself out, santo. ...
Enjoy your misery. You seem to relish it.
With this team...
what else can you revel in?
Not Bruce
Drowning his sorrows at the Manhole?
LOL...
you said manhole.
i'm not really embarrassed,
and don't think the venters need to be.
We agree to disagree
But I guess that's the whole idea.
IMHO I observe an abundant amount
of baseball discernment.
Bruce thinks..
anyone who says something he thinks is ignorant must  be a fair weather fan.
You got that right, santoswoodenlegs
I've only been a Cub fan for 44 years, that should qualify as a "fair weathr fan" don't you think?
Time served is no measure of a fan Ken...
only your "baseball acumen" and "intelligent posting technique". Also ignoring bad baseball helps.
HUH?
Was that a dig at me?
Nonsense!
Read NBF posts for this game thread.
Whew, thanks Santo,
For a minute there I thought you were heading to the Dark Side.
excuse him, his posts lack intelligence
hes still got his cubbie blinders on, nothing bad can ever be said about the cubbies, they must be loved and supported till the end, this isn't a 9 year old youth team, they can be criticized
I promised Eman
I'd lay off some of you, so I will.

But if you knew what I was thinking right now, you wouldn't like it one damn bit.

Unlike some of the Cubs...
I couldn't care less what you think or say about me. Fire away.
Im sure your thinking that this team is still a
world series contender which they aren't because they are obviously perfect
this is pathetic.
the dodgers are a better club than us. thankfully, we're not in the nl west.
Infield in.....
Great.
I still think
that we may take this division. It isn't much of a regular season division. However, what happens after that? We can't really do much with the Mets, and the D'Backs have given us quite a bit of trouble, and the Dodgers are having their way with us.

Now, this is what people said about the Cards last year and look what they did. They had some good relief pitching though, and some big bats. Our bats have gone away, and our pitching all around has proven shakey. I guess this is a team built to sneak into the post season. Even with that, I would love another playoff game at Wrigley, listening to Joe Buck and Tim McCarver felate each other, and whatever team the Cubs are playing.

This team can be so much better
thank you eyre/howry/dumpster/ohman for the shit you hacks pulled in the beginning of the year with your blown saves, we should be 5-6 games up if it weren't for them. BOOOOOOOOO!
Nice
This Hart kid's good.

phat

They can
still win this.

I'm not betting on it.

But they can.

phat

Can Saito pretend he is Dumpster in non save situa
Please?
That was not expected.
phat
That, however...
phat
Then you need to watch more
Cubs Baseball.
I was talking
about the walk from Saito.

phat

8 DPs!!!!!
in 2 games!!!!!!!
At least it was a DIFFERENT sort...
...of double play.
how appropriate
another GIDP. sorry, FIDP.
ohh wow
a double play . . .
Is that a record? 5 dp's
no way.
i'm not even sure of its the high this year.
wow, only one game ahead of st. louis.
and that team is terrible. disgusting. i think there's a pretty good chance that we're tied with the cardinals by the end of the night tomorrow. i have no idea what the brewers will do.
Is it OK to say the game is over now Bruce?
Not official until they turn the lights off!
Well, it is over
so I guess so.

Maybe tomorrow you can declare it over before the first pitch.

i declare it in jeopardy.
Oh...
You fair weather fan you....har har
Seems like
every game the Cubs have played against the Dodgers this season has been so damn frustrating.
Today's cubs game is brought to you by...........
The number two.  The way the cubs made outs today was two at a time.  The cubs have 2 games left to try and get a split and salvage this mess.  This entire game smelled like number two.  And if tomorrow we don't win, we will be number two.
If we don't win the division...
What can we do to improve this team for next year?
got to get these hitters to be more selective
and that includes soriano. maybe they should get a new hitting coach. i don't know, but they have to get more selective, and have to walk more.

they also have to get better at 'situational hitting' areas, bunting, saccing, etc.

Find a decent
Right Fielder!!!!!  The production the Cubs have gotten out of right field, when factoring in defense, has been far and away the worst in the league.
Oh Sure
Factor in defense whydoncha.  Sometimes we need to remember that this site (with the utmost respect to Al, thanks for doing such a great job with it) is called BleedCubbieBlue.  All of these posters fit that criteria (whether optimists or pessimists).  LetsHugACubbieBear this site is not.  I have had enough banter for one night.  Dear God I hope that they can salvage at least one of these games.  Yesterday I pointed out their record in series when they lose the first game.  This doesn't look too good.
Move down a level...
we have a lot of players who excel in AAA.
I have the answer,
GET NEW OWNERSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then get a General Manager that knows what he is doing.

Hire real baseball men to oversee the farm system and develop young players.

Have a real eye to eye talk with Lou. I would ask him this, if I owned the team: "Lou, are you satisfied with this team?" Then I ask him, "why," or "why not." His answer to those questions would determine whether or not he is the right manager for my team. I want winners, not excuse makers and whiners (e.g. "Whatya want me to do? Whatya want me to do? I'm doing the best I can."). I want a "Jim Leland," a "Terry Francona," yes, even a "Tony LaRussa."

No more excuses, we either get this ship moving forward in a new direction or I fire the whole lot of em.

Out of the 18 innings
the Cubs have played in this series 8 of them have been ruined by a double play.  That's disgusting.  What's the record for most double plays hit into in a game or in 2 games?  It can't be much more than 5 and 8 can it?
Lou
Just talked and he seemed pretty pissed.  He said that we need to score more runs.  He has been saying that quite often, but I wish he could tell us how he plans on making that happen, because that is the goal.
he said he's thinking about trying a speed lineup
i'm guessing that means an outfield of pie, soriano, and jones.
And I think he should do that
It might help the offense, and it also might help get some of these guys motivated again to get more hits.  I think the turning point in this season when things got better was partly due to Lou making changes and keeping guys on their toes making sure they didn't lose their spot.  I think we need more of that.
i also think he should try moving soriano
down in the lineup. maybe he should give lee a day off, play ward at first. line it up like this:

theriot
pie
ramirez
ward
soriano
derosa
jones
kendall

Ohman --
But I am sure no one asked him about Ohman -- why not?
They ship Patterson back to the boonies for the rest of the season but bring Ohman back after he deficates on this team when he got shipped to Iowa.
Lou uses Ohman two days in a row and he accomplishes the same things he did before he was sent out. What pray tell did he accomplish before and now -- the answer my friend -- absolutely nothing.
I really believe Lou
was letting him play to show him that he still isn't any good so that he doesn't have anything more to run his mouth about.  I really don't think we will see Oh Man play but one or two more games the rest of the season if he's lucky.  At least I hope.
NO MORE !!
We are trying to win this thing. I cannot really believe and I don't think you do either that Lou was trying to show Ohman anything by bringing him in. Bad judgement on Lou's part both yesterday and tonight to bring him in.
And not any more games period -- maybe if someone in the grounds crew comes up lame, Ohman can help rake the infield.
sunrise tomorrow
Lilly is due, Lets get a W,  this my friends will go to the last weekend.
I really hope you're wrong about
the weekend thing.

phat

I can't disagree
But the season already has been declared over buy some very knowledgable fans, so bear in mind you'll be the target of a lot of abuse.
Maybe being a little optimistic
But I really don't think anyone can say that the season is over just because of two bad games.  Yesterdays mess probably hurt the team, but they can come back.  We are still in first place, and I don't see why we should ever lose that spot the rest of the season.  Even if we do move down to second or third, that is only a margin of a few games, so I say it is close no matter what, but you can't count the Cubs out of it this year.
You're being realistic
and you shouldn't feel guilty about it, just because some others here are pessimistic to the point of sticking a loaded gun in their mouths.

Last time I checked, there are 25-something games left in the season.

And, oh, the Cubs are in first place.

Favorable pitching matchup tomorrow
Marquis versus Lowe is huge on thrs..   Fortunately, this is the best team the Cubs will face the rest of the way.  Fortunately, there will be lots of games with Pittsburgh, Cincy and Florida.
Man - I don't know abt. this
I have seen DLOWE pitch against the Cubs twice in LA.

He has an unbelievable sinker when he's on.

Ground-ball City!

I really wouldn't think this game is close to a lock...

He can be a beast.

A couple weeks ago...
I said "This is going to be a bloodbath." By that I meant the end of this season was going to be up for grabs between 3 teams battling it out. Additionally, I realized it was going to be really taxing emotionally. I wasn't wrong. This is going to be tough.

We all have to hang in there. It's clearly not over.  We would have killed to be in this position last year. It's gonna be good days and bad days for the next month. We might end up on top of this division. We might end up in third. We watch this stupid (amazing) game because we NEVER know what's going to happen.

I know
one thing I am playing Ward in rightfield against righthanders.
Well - maybe when they go
on the road, without the "booing distractions", they'll just concentrate on baseball and play up to their potential.

I like Lou. I really do - we're still 30 games ahead in the standings from last year, right.

But - he REALLY has me scratchin' my head sometimes.

The Oh-Man! bullshit? Pulling Trachsel? Why?

It is time to give DLEE and a couple of the regulars a blow, imo.

I think he was wanting
to give Ohman one more shot. I'd be surprised if you saw him again in a crucial situation.

Lou said afterward he's considering using a speedy lineup. That wouldn't be a bad idea -- a little more small ball, as it were.

He's pushed all the right buttons so far -- well, almost all of them.

Let's just not freak out about all this. Lotta games left.

the problem is you then have to play small ball...
and these cubbies will just keep swinging for the fences. if you're going to go fast, then you have to  be willing and able to play 'small ball.' too bad we can just start a lineup full of theriots.
The Shot
If Lou wanted to give him one more shot -- he missed. Maybe he meant he wanted to shoot him one more time to make sure he wouldn't come back.
Lou -- for all of our sake -- STOP USING OHMAN !!!
Why Is It?
The Cards get Branyan -- a barely useful player they need because of Rolen and Encarnacion injuries.
We get Monroe -- a barely useful player.
Monroe has done nothing since we picked him up. What does Branyan do? Smack a homer in the first game he plays for the Deadbirds.
Why oh why can't we just once pick up someone that comes through when we need it. Our everyday players have not come through in the clutch since I can't remember when. Our pitchers throw supposed quality starts but not the type of starts that we need to win games. Five double plays -- why not five at bats where one of our guys drives in a run -- or God forbid -- two runs.
Everyone on this site is frustrated -- because we have the players who should be and are good enough to beat out the Brewhahs and the Deadbirds.
But these guys need to produce -- it's getting late. As a friend of mine once said -- I saw the light at the end of the tunnel but someone up and broke it.
So that clutch homer by Lee the other day
was a figment of my imagination?
Clutch Homer --
The Cubs need more than one clutch homer and hitting in the clutch doesn't always mean the go ahead homer. It means getting a hit with a man on base to tie the game, getting a hit to put the game out of reach, productive hits. When a team is getting 9 and 10 hits a game with a few walks thrown in and are scoring 3 or fewer runs on a consistent basis -- like we have been -- there isn't a hell of a lot of clutch hitting happening.
Off Current Game Topic, but
whatever happened to Lou's experiment with Soriano hitting in the 5-spot against lefties?  If I remember correctly, he tried it during a Saturday national telecast, and the team put together a good offensive game.
they won...though soriano
went like 0-20 or something.
Would anyone care..
if Soriano hit .180 the rest of the year if we started winning? Besides him of course.
0-8, I believe
Here's an idea:
Stop clogging up the bases!!  If no one's on base, you can't hit into a double play, right??
Are we really getting outscored 17-5?
By the freakin' Dodgers?
Lou has nothing to lose...
By moving Soriano down and Theriot back to the top. They're not scoring anyway.
Yeah, except for the part...
...where Theriot has been slumping for nearly the past month now. He's been hitting like Koyie Hill for the past week.
wow, did you see the crowd or lack of it
in milwaukee? unreal, they had about 8,000 people there. whew.
There's very little
smart baseball being played. Not a typical Lou Piniella-led effort.  Swinging at first pitches after walks.  Swinging for the fences.  Trying to pull the ball in opposite-field situations.  Letting mistakes affect play long after they were committed.

It's extremely frustrating and is probably more so to Lou. It's probably getting close to "turning over the post-game buffet" time.

Z set the tone for this series
and they havent recovered. They had Penny on the ropes in the first inning and let him off with the first of 5 DP's.

This team needs a kick in the ass.

The Cubs could do worse
than put Pie in center and move Jones to right, at least against righties.  They don't seem to be getting production from right field no matter who they put out there.  At least they'd be solid defensively with Pie and Jones.
Things that might help the cubs tomorrw:
-Blanco at the plate. The Dodgers have to much speed for Kendal to throw out. Even though they are going to love Lilly tomorrow.
-Faster outfield. they were rounding the bases all over Ward.
        AND NO MORE DOUBLE PLAYS!!!!!!
As pissed off
as I am about losing two (actually five) in a row to the Do-yers (gotta live in LA to understand)....at least there is a reason to keep watching here in September...I gotta keep reminding myself of that.
Manager's Uniforms
600+ posts and no one mentioned Connie Mack?  He looked spiffy without a pullover or Majestic (R) jersey!
Fading away
Since Aug 1

Cubs 14-18 4 under last 10 4-6
MLW  15-19 7 under last 10 5-5
STL  18-13 5 OVER  last 10 7-3

If this keeps up, the Cubs and the Brewers are just handing the division to the Cards. I said 2 months ago they were going to be there competing at the end. They lose players for the season, yet still win.

We are technically in the race. For how much more, I can't say. All I know is this team has lost all spark after that come from behind win the other day. Can't figure out how they can be so strong one day and then not show up for a few. I guess it's fatigue and trying to get normal career stats from guys that are not producing this year. It's pretty sad when your hacking leadoff man leads the team in HR's. I could have bet my house if someone said that Lee and Rammy wouldn't hit 20 dingers each by now. The pitching's been a pleasant surprise this year. If we had an offense to show up more than 2 days a week, we'd be pulling away. I am very frustrated that this team is where they want to be at this point of the season and they lay egg after egg.

Holy Moses
We're in first place and we have people posting stuff like "technically we're in the race, but for how much more I can't say."

And "lost all spark" after a game two days ago. TWO DAYS AGO!!

You know what this is? It's called a DIVISIONAL RACE. Stuff like this fluctuates all the time, day to day.

Forget about Z manning up. Maybe some of you need to do the same thing.

Because...
If the Cubs do collapse, they are the ones who want to be able to say "I told you so. I knew this would happen."
Give them some credit, at least.
They won't want to say "I told you so," but they'll be more than happy to.

phat

Saying "I Told You So"
with regards to a team not winning the World Series takes zero mental prowess.  Even making the World Series.

In my lifetime, if I had bet against the New York Yankees winning the pennant every year, being down-in-the-mouth about everything they did every single day of the season, I'd be a wealthy man.  Miserable, but wealthy.

Well sure
phat
Pretty good analysis...
Except while the offense is still tanking...looks like the pitching is now fading fast down the stretch as well...

Also...guys shouldn't be "striving for stats"...they should be striving to win.....

But agreed...any kind of consistent offense and the Cubs might be sitting on an insurmountable lead at this point....or at least one that looks to evaporate away tomorrow and likely will have two teams to look up at this coming weekend....

And your TURD observation is a COMNPLETE INDICTMENT of Hendry...who can't find any WINNERS and Lou....who "makes the least* of his talent....

I completely disagree with the pathagorheea crao....BUT...that crap sez the Cubs should be leading this division by 6-0 games,,,,has 'em 10-12 above .500 and ht Brew about 7 under and the 'fen turds about 12 under.....

Shows that Tony the Drunk can  get players to overachieve....I'd complain about overpaying...cept I believe the Car  oopps.. I mean Turds actually have a bigger payroll than the Cubs....and thet Lou is leading the underachieving.....

I'm still looking for the manager rating article....but in it LaRussa had like a +12...Baker a +10...Lou is a like -5.......a plus means get team to overachieve...a minus is underachiever....BTW...y=this is over wentire career....

Children, look carefully
See what happens when you drink and post?
Sorry
MLW is 12-19 since Aug 1.
Still In First Place
If you'd told me on opening day we'd be in first place today, I would have taken it sight unseen.

Learn and move forward.  (And with some urgency, for crying out loud.)

Absolutely correct
n/t
Good call
I do have a worry though. Make that 2.

We dont have anything scary. I know that sounds very sophomoric, but we dont have that one thing lurking. Think about the Brewers. They have Braun and Fielder lurking in the....whatever inning. Pujols lurking in the ninth. We dont have that.  Daryl Ward has never lurked a day in his life. D Lee and Aramis are not lurking. Not to say they dont have punch, they do at times, but they do not strike fear in the hearts of anyone.

When I look at who is pitching for what team, I always hope we avoid (Fill in the blank). When we go to St Louis, I hope we dont face Wainwright. I hope that the Brewers arent pitching Sheets. We dont have that right now.

I heard some random caller on the WGN postgame saying we have no heart. Well, I do not think that, we dont have any (Fill in the Blank). When your ace is a mental case, and your lead-off hitter has the team lead in HR with 20, and by the way  48RBI's, no one is afraid of you. Whether we as Cubs fans want to believe that means anything or not, it does. MOXY! That is the word I have been searching for. A thumper in the middle that is in the back of the pitcher's mind all game. A starter in the rotation, everyone is dreading to face. No and No.

Do I think we will be standing on top at the end of the season? I pray everyday that is the case. It just took me until tonight to figure out that if we dont make it, I feel these are the reasons why.

Al, pardon my language, but I am about to use some  possibly offensive language.

When I was 22, I had to walk into my first classroom as a teacher. I was scared to death and had no idea how I was going to do it. My boss told me that the "Big Dick" method was the only way. Walk in the room with a sense of ego and a "bad ass" mentality that is unmistaken. The Cubs are continuing to bring a knife to a gun fight, and until they start implementing my "method", fighting the good fight is not enough.

I think you'd be silly
not to be a little bit worried about Lee, Ramirez, Soriano or Jones if you were pitching to them.

phat

the wrist slashers
are symptomatic of the world we live in. Everyone demands a resolution immediately, whether it's food, TV channel, info on the net, etc.. A short attention span is now the norm in our society. You see people whining about a single game result like it somehow defines an entire season. Talk about small sample size. You'll see other nuts struggle with the fact they can't control what they're watching, and desperately try to make predictions (that always end up wrong) based on various charts to somehow try and comprehend a game they sadly can't grasp. Pathetic really. Some think that the saying "it's a marathon, not a sprint" is a cliche. It isn't. People that think that way don't really understand it's 162 games, often played for weeks straight at a time. By guys that are tired. Guys that know a single mistake could swing a game either way. Managed by men who sometimes are masters of this game of chess or amateurs in over their heads. I still still feel as confident about this team as I did from day 1. And I was at the game tonight and it simply was one of the numerous games you see in a season where more guys on our team had a bad night than a good one. That's the way it goes sometimes.

The fact is nobody knows for sure what is going to happen. That is the beauty of the game. If you don't understand that, then you really shouldn't be along for the ride.

I agree 100 percent
And you put it in words better than I ever could.
I have to respond to this
A "bad night"!!! How bout a bad century!

Look, all of us are Cub fans here and we don't need to be constantly taking swings at one another, although I guess it is kind of like a family. We can criticize our own brother, sister, father, or mother, but anyone else try the same thing and they get beaten. Any Cardinals fan comes in here and dumps on the Cubs gets it from me.

However, having said that, I for one thought that Sunday's game was a preview of things to come. OK, they lost a stinker yesterday, move on and start anew today. But, what do they do? They decide to be the "Cubs" those hilariious "lovable losers" who just can't seem to get it done. And Lou's decision making does leave a lot to be desired. I wanted more fire out of that guy and were not getting it. I go back to my original post a few days ago that really got some of you in a lather - The Cubs will finish third, maybe second if they are real lucky, and end another, as they have for the past 99 years, lousy season.

They can't help themselves, they are the Cubs.

If this were the Cardinals, Dodgers, Mets, Phillies, Houston, even Pittsburgh, I think the vast majority of us would not be "gloom and doom," but this team has proven nothing, and until they do, I, and many others here, will remain skeptical.

Then why do you follow the team?
If you think there's nothing they can do to improve their lot, you should find another team to follow.

Pittsburgh? Extrapolating the last two games over the next 25-26? Maybe you really ARE a troll.

I am in no way a wrist slasher
I don't post a hell of a lot so none of you can really tell my intent. I have been a Cubs fan for 40 years and based on past performance and how this team seems to let the big chances slip away, I simply put up some numbers and opinions. If this team was in the playoff hunt 8 out of 10 years, then call me that. 5 times in the last 62???? Do you wonder why most of us feel this year will pass us by?? AGAIN??? Did I ever tell you I was a Blackhawks fan, too? lol

Positives-yes, many. They can play small ball to the point of excluding big ball. Pitching staff Good enoughish. Clutch hitting, sporadic at best. Bullpen has improved greatly from the bad start. a Enough to win it all? Don't know. Have to get to the post season first. I predicted a tad over .500 this year and actually looked towards next year as   the year. This year was to Un-Dusty-fy the team and get a couple players that will make a difference. If anyone can make the most out of this team, it's Lou. No question there.

I want nothing better than to have the Cubs make the post season and make a good run at the prize this year. Believe me, I understand the game and the ride we call the pennant race.

Sure, tomorrow they could come out and win 12-3 and the smiles will be on all our faces for a day.  All I posted was how it was slipping away. I know they are tired. So are the Brewers and Cards. But they seem to be beating the also rans, we are not. At least not lately.

bullroar.
Only the wrist slashers post this crap about a team that stunk the first 2 months of the season and then fought back to now be in first.

The fact is that way too many people project their negative view about life in general on to the Cubs.

If you consider my post a wrist slasher
you really haven't read this blog this season. I didn't call any players names or say it's over. We can do it. AT THIS POINT IN TIME the numbers and performance on the field does not relate. I am not trying to set myself up for an "I told you so". I took a snapshot of the las 30+ games and compared the 3 teams involved. You need to relax.
HE! HE! HE!
OK, tell me Matt, how many pennants have the Cubs won in the last 40 years, the last 50 years, the last 60 years? Tap! Tap! Tap!, hello anybody there???

And World Series? well we better not go there.

How about divisional championships? Ah, yes there it is one in 2003. But the Cubs being the Cubs (and up 3-1 over the Marlins), they lose the pennant the same year. Also, up 2-0 in 1984 NLCS against the Padres, lose 2, then with Mr. Cy Young on the man (Rick Sutcliffe), and a 3-0 lead going into the 6th, Leon Durham lets one go through his knees and they lose 6-3.

Do us all a favor and spare us the lecture about how "negative" we are about this team. They are negative, not us. We have supported them for many a year and they stink it up every year one way or another. They need to prove to us they are worthy of hope, not support, but hope.

I have already posted countless times about what needs to happen to turn this franchise around. Will it happen? All depends on the supposed sale of the team and who will own it in 2008.

Oh, and by the way to the other poster who said, "Pittsburgh??" How many World Series has Pittsburgh won in the past 40 years?
2, thats right, 2. And they were extremely competitive in the early 90's. They have proven they can turn it around. That was my point.

And the Pirates haven't had a winning season
in 16 years.

Sorry, Eman, but I think even you would support me on this one:

Idiot.

I can't pass this one up
So, the Pirates haven't had a winning record in 16 years, huh?
I would advise you to have a clue next time you want to post. The Pirates had records of 95-67 in 1990; 98-64 in 1991; 96-66 in 1992. Their losing started in 1993 after losing Bonds. Not quite 16 years ol buddy.

Nevertheless, I'll take 15 or 14 years of losing records in exchange for a couple of World Series victories any day!!!!

So, who's the idiot here?

By the way, anyone who can't post a rational argument, without behaving like a child, doesn't belong on this site.

I know, I broke my vow to never respond to your nonsense, but I couldn't pass this up. Now back to my vow.

OK ,15 years
Citing the Pirates as a franchise that has "proven it can turn it around" is so stupid it's an insult to stupid people.

And you're right, anybody who can't post a rational argument shouldn't be on this site.

Time for you to go.

Where to begin?
The Dodgers are an "also-ran"? Last time I checked, they had roughly the same record as the Cubs and still were in contention in the NL West and wild card.

You also said we are "technically" still in the race, the implication being that they're as much in the race as, say, the Pirates are. Well, technically, the Pirates still are in the race. Think they'll make it? Me, neither. And I've got news for you: Even if the Cubs do fall a game or two back, they're STILL in the race.

What a bunch of losers. Not necessarily the Cubs, but a healthy percentage of the fans who follow them.

Managers...
...I wish they were allowed to dress like Connie Mack and forgo the baseball unis altogether.

If a manager wants to wear a uniform, fine but allow them to dress as they please, unless they are player managers.

* Extra Extra...*...
BCB is for Rah rah support from hear on....

No more honest analysis....

Zambrano and Jones can't take it....

If you aren't cheering the Cubs on....DON'T POST...

There is a middle ground
between rah-rah support and glooming and dooming it after every stinking loss.

Find it.

Funny
that you called this a stinking loss. How appropriate lol You are more doom and gloom than you think. Freudian slips tell much.

Sure, I posted a little gloom, I also post some cheer at times, and I did give them their props in a following post. I feel I am more middle of the road than you give me credit for. I also don't jump on and off the bandwagon. I have watched them and attended games my whole life. I went to one game when they were here a week or so ago. I root for them at the exclusion of my new "home" team. Even some of the "rah rahs" would agree with some of what  I said. I didn't lie or say anything that wasn't true.

'True'?
True according to whom?

You posted a lot of worst-case-scenario hypotheses and passed these off like you were Nostradamus.

I don't know what's going to happen. I'm going to sit here and find out. I still think this team has what it takes to win the division.

Last I checked, there wasn't one game left in the season. Or two. Or even one series.

There are 25 games left for a team that still is in FIRST PLACE in the division. Enjoy it.

I posted the team records from Aug 1 on
and that was true. In my haste of listing some also ran teams we lose to, I inadvertently included included the Buns because they were on my mind. Sorry about that. I also did not prophesize  the outcome, merely stated the numbers indicate that first place is slipping away.
You need to too....
I didn't post yesterday......and I don't think I posted all Astro Series.........I've actually been pretty quiet since mid june...save Met's meltdown and sweep by astros....

Yes...a team isn't going top win all 162....BUT needs to win nearly 2/3 to be a true contender...

And I put out blistering criticism after regretable games where I think a little TEAM effort may have made a difference......

This team continues to squander golden opportunities to run away with this division...

IMHO...somebody is going to mak'em pay......

So you basically admit
you only post after losses. Nice.
Never said that
n/t
But when you run
into a super model to start your day, I thought nothing would go wrong the rest of the day!

As my road trip continues, I visited a particular radio station at 228 N. Michigan Ave. Upon leaving, I noticed Tyra Banks and her entourage in the building's lobby.

Now, I thought that was going to be a good omen.

SuperModel -- Super Game that night.

(I think Al is blaming this on my visit to the bleachers.....)

But it was a quality start by Steve Trachsel.

And, the poster who's pining after Russell Branyan....please, wake up. So he hit a home run. Big deal. The Cards would only be his...third team this year? He's a stiff. Trachsel will prove to be the best waiver deal by the time this season ends.

Maybe other supermodels would have been better.
phat
Honestly,
I think we're in deep crap. We can't score. Plain and simple. This doesn't even look close to a team that can win a series much less rattle off a semi-decent win streak. I never thought I'd say this, but the 5 game battle with the Cards might just save our hide. If we can somehow, by some blue moon muster up say...four wins that series, we could do some damage to the standings. Without that, I'm afraid we're screwed. You can say "We're still in first", but thats like saying after you jump off the Sears Tower and fall for three feet "I'm still alive"...yeah, not for long.
As Van Halen would say
Jump ... go ahead and jump.
Steady, Steady
Keep in mind (as has been said a million times), "the baseball season is a marathon, not a sprint", so, while we can all see the finish line -- a lot of baseball has yet to be played by our 2007 Cubs.  Enjoy the ride.
