Bleed Cubbie Blue

Open Thread: Cubs vs. Dodgers, Wednesday 9/5, 7:05 CT

When the Cubs made their stirring comeback vs. the Astros on Sunday, some of you compared that game to this August 29, 1989 pennant race game, also against Houston.

What's happened since Sunday has begun to mirror 1989 in other ways, too. After that dramatic win, the Cubs lost six of nine ... and had their lead cut to half a game, just as it is now. That included blowing a 7-1, 7th-inning lead to the Cardinals on September 8.

The day after that the Cubs came from behind to tie in the 8th inning and won in dramatic fashion, 3-2 in 10, when Luis Salazar's double down the line in a light rain scored Andre Dawson from first base.

That was the first of a six-game winning streak, and the 1989 Cubs won 15 of their last 21 games. I trust we don't have to go through six losses to get to the hot streak that we need. Two is enough. Let's go increase that lead tonight.

vs. LA -- vs. Cubs
Step it up, Ted Lilly, please. You've been good most of the year, but you haven't won in almost a month (since August 9). Lilly is 1-0 in three career appearances vs. the Dodgers, but with an unsightly 6.57 ERA, including this mediocre performance on May 25 at Dodger Stadium, in which he was yanked with the Cubs down 5-0, only to see them take an 8-5 lead and blow it.

Let's hope those days are long behind us. The only Dodgers who have more than six career AB vs. Lilly are two players who probably won't play today: Nomar Garciaparra (3-for-10) and Shea Hillenbrand (4-for-10).

I don't have much to say about Stults, who is yet another young lefthander who the Cubs have never seen before. When I hear his name I keep thinking of this actor, whose name sounds very similar.

Good news for Derrek Lee today -- he has been named the Cubs recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award, and will be one of the 30 (one for each team) finalists for the national Clemente Award. This award is given "to the Major League Baseball player who combines outstanding skills on the baseball field with devoted work in the community." Derrek is being recognized for his work on Project 3000. You can vote for D-Lee to win the national award by clicking here. (WARNING! That page starts playing a commercial without notice.)

Today's game is on two national channels -- WGN and ESPN -- and also at today's Mediacenter link.

Let's go get 'em
Congrads to D-Lee !!!
Start of strong
Lets get this kid in the stretch and put a couple crooked numbers up.
Can't be beat by one guy
recently it's been one guy, usually not the superstar, that's beaten the Cubs. Be it Corey Hart, or Hunter Pence, or Matt Kemp with his 4 almost 5 hits last night. Seems like there's always one guy they don't read the scouting report on. Let's not see that tonight. Shut 'em all down!

Let's hear Steve Goodman sing tonight!!!!

Gotta win tonight
and tomorrow, really.Losing 3 of 4 at home in September in the middle of a pennant race to an evenly mediocre team as the Dodgers, would be a tough pill to swollow and barring another scuffle, the team's moral would be in the tank.

 Getting swept, would be disasterous.

I actually have a good feeling about tonight's game however. Cubs are gonna pull it out tonight.

Wow...
The Dodgers came in with a .5 game better record than the Cubs and they play in the West where everyone is over .500 except the "Gints." Do you want to take back that "mediocre" line...just for karma tonight? Believe me, I HATE the Dodgers, but for a Cub fan to call them mediocre is a bit odd. Either way, GO CUBS!!!! Kick butt tonight!
No I don't, but thank you.
Dodgers are an absolutely mediocre Offense and an underachieving and inconsistent starting rotation.

Even HOF Orel Hershiser just said when talking about the 2007 LA Dodgers "a mediocre team, fighting for it's life."

We need a streak
Enough with this win one-lose one-win two-lose two nonsense; I agree with Al - let's do something this team hasn't done since June - win 6 straight.

Like Al says, there is no reason why they can't start tonight on National TV.

Let's do it Ted!

And please, no double plays tonight either!

Lineup...
soriano lf
derosa 2b
lee 1b
ramirez 3b
murton rf
monroe cf
soto c
cedeno ss
lilly p
Soto, yay!
Cedeno, boo!
all RH lineup
I seem to remember this not working vs. the Astros, and the Houston announcers mentioning that Lou should've stuck in at least ONE LH bat, just to shake it up a bit. I guess didn't hear the game.....
I realize Lilly bats LH
That's not what I meant.....
This won't work...
...it has 2 runs written all over it
Monroe...
....BOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
I don't believe the all RH bat
lineup against LH pitchers has ever worked. Why does Lou keep trotting this out??? Very strange. Does anyone recall it ever coming up a winner?
Oh no!!!!!
Not Cedeno!

Puke.

I didn't even notice Cedeno
 Was too busy puking.

Ughh, what a terrible and catastrophic lineup.

I take back my previous good feelings about tonight's game and a Cubs W.

It's gonna be nearly impossible to win with this lineup. Lilly has to pitch one of his best games of the year tonight.

It's finally happened
People are throwing in the towel before the first pitch is even thrown.

Give yourselves a hand. God knows you deserve it.

I'm not saying we can't win...
with this lineup, but if Ronny Cedeno does ANYTHING tonight that bears any resemblance at all to playing baseball I'll be shocked.
I am really tired of you.
Not nearly as tired as I am
of the bedwetters.
then, why come here?
it seems you like to complain and nag at folks in the same way that they like to complain about the cubbies.
I could ask the same of you, buck
Why come here to make pre-emptive angst loads?

I guess this isn't the place for intelligent baseball conversation. (Much as Al tries to make it so.) Some of you would rather it be a psychotherapy ward.

Absolutly right....
You can't have intelligent baseball conversations with people who disagree on things.
Hope the sarcasm font
was working on that post, santo.
A public service announcement...
from Not Bruce...

well said
what is wrong with you people?  All doom and damn gloom.  Take a step back.  We're in first place.  We're in a playoff chase.  You're ready to give up on tonight hours before the game starts.  Baseball's funny sometimes, you can throw out your best offensive lineup sometimes and get 2 runs, then the next night you throw something completely different out there and get 7.  You just dont know.

I for one am glad Soto's starting tonight.  Cedeno too.  Lets' get a damn win, eh?

Cedeno
I'm not sure that I ever like seeing that name in the lineup, but at least Lou was smart enough to do it with a fly ball pitcher on the mound.  Also, at least Lou doesn't have him batting second like last time.

I would like to see one LHB in the 5 or 6 spot just to make the pitcher "change lanes".

Monroe in CF?
is this a joke?  I thought Lou said he was going with the 'speedy' lineup.. What's next.. Ward at SS??
man, i hope soto
hits like ankiel or braun today.
Not possible.
Apparently, Iowa actually plays in A ball. But lists themselves in AAA. Hence everyone on the roster hitting over .350.
Not quite
but pretty damn good!
That's not a speed lineup.
n/t
Al mentioned the 3-2 win against StL on 9-9-89
and it was every bit as dramatic and jubilant as he says.  Matter of fact, it is my all-time favorite Cubs game.  I just wish it was included in the DVD pack that came out this year!
Hammer
Agreed a 4-6 game winning streak would feel nice. GO CUBS
God Bless Lou...
but that lineup is scary..

I hope I am wrong....

Time to score some runs!

and it's not exactly a speed lineup either.
It seems like
every time lately that the team seems ready to fall off the cliff, they turn it around. Hopefully, today is another instance.

What's troubling has the failure of both Zambrano and Lilly to be stoppers. That has to stop.

Stults was called up from Las Vegas but didn't pitch against the Iowa team although he was used as a PH. His WHIP in Vegas was atrocious, 1.97, although he had most of his trouble pitching at home there. Las outing he only threw 4.2 innings, giving up 5BB. He seems best suited for pitching in LA as he is a flyball pitcher. He's primarily a reliever who shouldn't go over 5 innings so if we are patient, we can get into middle relief against the Dodgers.

Hopefully Lilly shuts down LA early and we take a lead for once. Our end of game relievers are rested so there is no reason to lose this game.

Yesterday
we saw what we can expect in the playoffs. Teams are going to run on us with Kendall behind the plate. Let's hope Soto throws a few guys out today.
Hello Soto
Go Cubs!!!

(And, yeah, that lineup is kinda scary. But what the hell...)

T -E - A - M
Let's play like one tonight!!

GO CUBS!!!

It's Raining on the South Side
Is it raining in Wrigleyville?
It's drissling by the lake on the North side
I have worship team practice...
at my church tonight so I won't be able to watch the game! That's what DVR's are for I guess. Keep them honest tonight NBF!!!! Go CUBS!!!!!
then pray really, really hard
WHY????
You think God cares about the Cubs? I don't.

But I take some solace in the fact that

well, that doesn't make a lot of sense
Now that...
...is beautiful!
What's your worship team's record?
And where are we in the worship season? : )
Don't tell Not Bruce...
but we happen to be 35-0 this season...

we only have 17 more sundays to go to be a perfect 52-0!!!

We've clinched home field advantage and a first round bye!

Well, then,
you shouldn't be so sour, now, should you?
I'm not sour about our worship team...
each of us has a role and we practice and perform up to the expectations expected of us. The cubs on the other hand...
what exactly is a worship team?
Fancy name for...
the band that plays the music for our Sunday services at church
Monroe in CF with Murton in RF?
Let's hope for no center/right field gappers.

Jones and Theriot needed a rest though.  I can't remember the last time those guys had a day off, certainly not together.  Love seeing the Pacific Coast League MVP in the lineup!

If we play an American League team, should Zambrano hit for himself, Blanco at C and Kendall DHs?

ward should probably dh.
the big fella normally gives solid at bats. in fact, i wish he was starting at first tonight. dlee could use a day off, and ward is a tough out; he'd be a good left-handed bat in the lineup.
LET'S GET SOME RUNS!!!!!
n/t
Favorable pitching matchup today...
especially since LA doesn't hit many homers and Lilly's a flyball pitcher.
Pie
What does Felix need to do to play a game? When was his last start?
My guess is he'll need to do better...
than this...

              OBP   SLG   AVG
Cedeno    .164  .255  .118
Monroe    .304  .300  .200

Yeah
Now that I think about it, Monroe and Murton shouldn't be starting in CF/RF on the same day.  If we are going to be putting Murton out there in RF, Pie should be starting in center to make up for Murton.
Um.
It's called a platoon split. Pie can't hit lefties. Nobody can hit lefties on this team. That's why we're running out this lineup.
On the other hand...
I really like DeRosa at #2.
so
you think espn will actually show the game or will they run espn news
Pathetic Lineup!!!
Wow!!! What did Theriot do to deserve being replaced by Cedeno???? Monroe and Murton!!!! Yucky....and a national TV audience gets to see us score even fewer runs!!!! Not impressed with Lou's thinking here!!! Gonna go vomit and the maybe watch our Double A lineup struggle against a rookie pitcher. Onward to 2nd Place!!!!
I have seen this before from stupid as a fox
managers like Piniella. He is saying to his team I have confidence in everyone here. He is also saying that some players need some rest and some players need some opportunity.

Monroe...show us now how you played in Detroit.
Soto...show us how you won that MVP in AAA
Cedeno show us how you hit .350 in AAA.

Cubs also cannot win by one player here, they have to win by a team. Lilly will have to pitch smart tonight. But I bet by the 5th inning the Cubs have knocked out the young lefty (BTW Cubs are 12-0 in their last twelve in facing rookie pitchers.)

Then LA will bring in their RH bullpen and Piniella will begin his double switches....Jones, Pie, maybe even Blanco.

If the experiment works good for Lou....
but is it really time to put that lineup on the filed in the thick of a race? And why no Theriot??? Is this the speed lineup....don't think so!
Theriot
needs a day off.  He's been playing every inning of every game for a while now.  The Cubs have a day game tomorrow so today was as good a time to rest him as any.
I agree!
Every time the BCB posts HATE the line up, it usually is a winner. But I did ask (above) has the all RH line up (against LH pitchers) ever been a winner? I don't recall it ever working...but of course now that we are past 9/1 we do have RH bats on the bench for pinch-hitting late in the game. BTW, I am not complaining about Lou's strategy, just asking if anyone knows about Lou's success with this. I know Brenly prefers to mix 2 a couple of LH bats to keep the LH pitcher off-balance. Anyway...we are WAY OVERDUE in giving our starter a fat lead. Let's score early and often!!!
I'm not sure how often
he's used it. What is this, maybe the second or third time? Probably too small a sample size to evaluate.
OK.
Let's just kick ass and take names on Sgt. Stultz and get him mumbling to himself, "I know nothing!' That is an old Hogan's Heroes line for you youngsters... http://www.angelfire.com/pa/hoganshero/images/nothing.jpg
Eric Stultz

can bake 20-minute brownies in 10 minutes.  He's that good.
As a team...
we are hitting .250 vs. LHP this year. The strange thing is, it's only .003 off of last years .253 avg. I don't recall the outcries of failing to hit lefties last year. Of course the outcries against Dusty may have just overshadowed everything else.

CHC VS. LHP as a TEAM

2007 .250 (as of 9-4-07)
2006 .253
2005 .275
2004 .249
2003 .276
2002 .248
2001 .277
2000 .274
1999 .250

The outcries were there last year...
they just fell in with a bunch of others.  When you lose 96 games, there's a lot to complain about.
There were outcries last year and in 2004
That's why HIGGY got the lefty BP pitcher job, when it was revealed they didn't have one.
OT: Cubs Desktop Wallpapers
Anybody know of any good Cubs desktop wallpaper to use? I've been searching for a while but haven't found much.
This one is my current one...
Lineup
If Lee, Ramirez, and Soriano do what they're being paid a lot of money to do this offense will score runs.  If they don't, it won't.
We're are..
5-31 when we score 2 or less...

but only 5-26 if you throw out the shutouts.

Messed up line up.
First of all, there's no speed in the line up.
Second, Murton in RF? Ughh!
Third, Monroe is Detroit's payback for Neifi.
Fourth, DeRosa can't bunt but he's 2nd? Ughh!
Fifth, Cedeño?! Need I say more?
All we need now is Ohman in relief and Pie in CF. (For all of you who are calling for Pie to play tonight, check his stats. Pie couldn't hit lefties in AAA, either and tonight's pitcher for the Dodgers is a lefty.)

Did we really need to rest everyone at once, Lou?

That being said, go Cubs! Let's play good baseball and win tonight... somehow?!

I'm calling it right now
This lineup will score at least 7 runs.

Just to spin all of our heads around.

I like it Soto is in th elineup
he has to be better on D then Kendell, and should give us little more O then Hank White. Obviosly don't like seeing Cedano out there, I would rather see Fonty even though its lefty on the mound.
Kendall could have done that!
I don't remember Pierre being this energetic for us. Typical.
Raise your hands if you're suprised
nothing soto could do
pierre
i don't think that i recall him ever making that type of play as a cub...maybe it's a one year thing for an ex-cub going to the dodgers (nomar too)
Lots of damn foul balls so far
Come on Lilly!!
wow Dodgers 50-13 when they score first
nice, go get that lefty boys
Well, that was tense
But he got out of it.

I've got 50 cents in my pocket. Whoever breaks Pierre's legs can have it.

I'd break those sticks for free
Quandry
Do you watch the game on ESPN HD with the inept commentary or GN with Bob and Len?
ESPN for me...
so I can actually sit on the couch and watch it
WGN of course
ESPN makes my ears bleed.
HD wins every time
How many of you picking WGN have HD TV's??
Solution
Video: ESPNHD
Audio: Pat and Ron via XM

Synchronize with Tivo.

Better score some runs at the top
way to hustle fonzie!
oops
maybe derosa needed a day off too
Hard to stay positive after that
DP number 9 of the series
Well, that blew chunks of goo
At some point, the law of averages has to catch up...
Sue, one of your phrases comes to mind
LOL
I'll save it for later if needed.
19 innings in this series
9 of them killed by a double play.  RIDICULOUS!!!
No way!
Double play!

phat

1st pitch pop up by Ramy
Fielder 3 run HR 1st inning.
Astros are just rolling over. Which is no surprise as they stink.
If Bruce Miles checks in
If Bruce Miles checks in tonight can someone ask him if Barry Rozner is gone from the Herald?
Why don't
you email Bruce and ask him your self.
i know that voice.
I think it's
the way she repeats herself that gives her away.
Good walk by Lee
By the way, the Red Roosters and the Jack Sparrows are delayed , while the Schlitzes are up 3-0 over the Ashholes

I would have giggled had Kent broken his hip or something. Old fart.

why is d-lee the only guy taking pitches
off this crap lefty?  (i say this, and he will pitch a shutout of course)
Brewers up 3
in the 1st
COME ON -----
WILL SOMEONE PLEEEZZZZ TAKE A PITCH !!!
I WILL SAY IT AGAIN -- TAKE A PITCH !!!
I WILL SAY IT AGAIN -- TAKE A PITCH !!!
I WILL SAY IT AGAIN -- TAKE A PITCH !!!
I WILL SAY IT AGAIN -- TAKE A PITCH !!!
I WILL SAY IT AGAIN -- TAKE A PITCH !!!
I WILL SAY IT AGAIN -- TAKE A PITCH !!!
I WILL SAY IT AGAIN -- TAKE A PITCH !!!
I WILL SAY IT AGAIN -- TAKE A PITCH !!!
Has anyone ever
Been wounded by a broken bat splinter? Those are dangerous, like little javelins flying around.
Reno 911
some funny shit.
lol that it is Sue
Wow.
Monroe lollygagged on that one.

I realize Jones is the favored whipping boy, but he catches that.

JJ would
have had that one.
I think it was lack of CF instinct
more than lack of effort
Monroe isn't used to playing center though
he can't read the ball off the bat that well
Wow... that felt good
Great throw
Geo.
And is he too good
To shag flies during BP?
lol i have a feeling that he probably was
alright
It's cool to see a Cubs catcher throw out someone trying to steal. Cool and rare.
that brewers lineup is just unstoppable at home.
... And so, so bad
on the road.

How do you explain such a dichotomy?

well...that was a freebie
sorry, fonzie
Monroe isn't going to bail you out like Jones did.
I will only be a rah rah tonight
to placate the anti-domm&gloomers that voiced their displeasure with me late last evening lol

GO YOU GD FREAKIN' CUBBIES!!!!!

Is that rah rah enuff????

;)

Thats rah enough for me! lol
Orel preaches patience...
Third batter out of five who swung at first pitch!
As just reported on ESPN.
This guy
has thrown 12 pitches and has 4 outs.

Good job Craig!

On first pitch GIDP's
I will just say "darn! He just missed that one. Go get'em next time!"
Wouldn't expect anyone to be that rah..
Thatta boy Soto!
Well, you know
sometimes just posting facts makes you a wrist slasher around here...wink wink
What pieces of work
some of y'all are.
Just havin' fun, my BSB friend!
Relax and enjoy a Cubs victory tonight...
Indeed,
that would be dandy.
Oops
I meant BCB
DAYUM
That was a rocket shot off Monroe's bat.
wow...espn showed fielder's hr
pence nearly had that, about 3 inches low on his reach
Nice hit Soto 1-0
BANG!
All hail his Soto-ness!
Who needs Kendall...
Attaboy!
I like Soto, but Kendal is one of the
reasons we're in first place
Kendall's had some key hits
And I like the guy... but I'd like to see Soto make us wonder why we traded Bowen and Blevins when a good catcher was already in the fold.
Hooray!
We scored first!!
That throw was craptastic.
Nice job Sot.
Geez, whoda thunk...
...that the best hitter in the PCL could produce at the majors.
No kidding.
I think the PCL stinks.  C'mon Cedeno is a .359 hitter.
All 4 outs on 1st pitches!!!
Do we even have a batting coach or is Perry just a mannequin?  Alright a little life!  Soto shoulda been up months ago! LOL
I'm not gonna get too excited...
But NICE for SOTO & MONROE!

FragginJudge - give the PROPS to Monroe tonight!

Gentlemen & Lady - Ronny Cedeno has a .116???

Is this possible?!

The short answer is no.
No, it is NOT possible for Ronny Cedeno to continue doing what he's been doing at the plate and have a .116 batting average over a large enough sample size. He hits his fair share of line drives, and has been spectacularly unlucky in limited playing time.

Or, you could listen to the grognards. "Dur, keep your stats away from my baseball! Ronny Cedeno sucks!"

Yeah. That's it.

What line drives?
Cedeño just hit short fly balls all night long.
Ha, ha
Unlucky.  That's a good one.  The excuse-making sinks to a new low.
I wasn't on line...
because I can't stand the comments during the game. But thanks for remembering me, Eman. No, I won't commend Monroe because I value defense too much. Lou's hand was forced, though, by Jones' and Pie's inability to hit lefties.
ESPN just proved that baseball keeps stats for
absolutely everything.
Kendall has grown on me
after his early Cubs slump.

So what if he can't throw out my mom (she passed away, 2001).

I don't care!

I hate Joe West
joe west
takes his sweet ass time to call a strike
Typical
bad Country Joe West K zone.
Bucknor on his crew too. Two morons.
6-0 Brewers in the second
on Braun's 3R HR
That stros
pitcher is the ultimate scrub.
Monroe is struggling...
he should not be playing center
not only is he not a centerfielder but he has only been a cub for a few weeks and has very little experience playing his rf position in wrigley, let alone centerfield.
This one is a rare head-scratcher from Sweet Lou
Monroe ain't no centerfielder
He should be playing in right field
I think I'd rather have Murton in CF
Sweet Jeezum Crispus Attacks.
KNOCK THIS GUY DOWN!
He stole money from us!
I lost all respect for Landon Donovan
They planned that one!
WOW that was awesome
Nice catch Ronny
I've never in my life seen that before.
Holy s##t!
A-Ram & Ronny
were practicing that play during b/p.
:-)
Can't say i've ever seen a play like that
one a line drive
It happened to Prior
When the ball fractured his elbow and Aram caught it for the out...not sure if that out was worth it though.
Good play by Cedeno
He had to have been distracted by the rolls of fat jiggling on Aramis' falling body
You mean the sound of the
muscles in his six pack flexing
Brewers
thankfully play 13 of their remaining 24 on the road.
BREAK HIS NECK, DERREK
Don't let him soil you with his money-grubbing, thieving hands!
Red Turkeys and Pie-Rats
Just got underway
Brewers score again.
Thatta boy DeRo!
DAMN! I thought that was gone!
Well, we're getting good swings...
We also should be tagging up on Pierre. That little twerp couldn't throw a straight line across the street.
We have one guy who can tag up from first.
And he is not DeRosa.
Come on Ramirez!!
YESSS!!! No doubt about that one!!!
that a boy rami
YEAH BABY!!!!!
This kid was living dangerously
And Fatty made him pay!
Please stop
calling the players names. That's just ridiculous.
It's affectionate!
Look at him waddle around the bases! It's cute!
He may be cute
but you are not.
why
why do most cubs fans always talk about people being fat, it seems like thats all you guys talk about....Zambrano is fat, lou is fat, aram is fat
Zambrano isn't fat
But when they have the reunions 25 years from now, Zambrano (Assuming he isn't in a mental institution) will show up about 100 pounds over.

He's got Future Fat March written all over him.

Don't forget Randall Simon, Lenny Harris and Daryl Ward.

I love fat players.

if at first you don't succeed
aramis will clean up for you.  BOOYAH
ARAM!!!
SWEET!  Let's get some more!!
Yes!
phat
wow, just missed.
i hope lilly has a good inning in the 4th. need to keep them off the board.
Keep it up, Lilly!
Good AB by Matt, tho.
10 pitches. Run up that guys pitch count!
Let's go Lilly!! Put em down
If anyone wants to see
Braun get thrown at in the Brewers game, you should put it on there now, after his first HR he stared the ball down and slowly walked out of the box, the astros looked pretty pissed, and berkman and asmus both said something to him about it as he went around the bases
I'd hate to see something terrible happen to him..
Me too...
I really care about his safety and well being...
when braun
when he came to the plate, you could see that he was saying sorry to ausmus, and tell him "my bad"
Good job Lilly! Lets get some more runs boys!
That's the Teddy
we know and love.
That was a shitty called third strike
Joe West is a pile of crap!
He's been screwing the Cubs for decades.
Who do you Boo, pt. 3
Joe West - Check

Will Oh-Man! - Check

Stevie Eyre - On occasion

BWAHAHAHAHAH
ERROR PIERRE!
Thatta boy Soto!
Sweet Soto!
And Pirates up 3-0 over the Cards!
Is anyone listening to Pat and Ron
talking about peanuts?

nice hit for soto!

worst ever
after listening to these for what seems like my whole life, this is easily the worst conversation i've ever heard
Take a pitch Ronny!
I really don't like Juan Pierre
And that's a big understatement.  And his oversized hat and undersized head annoy me.  Maybe I should see a shrink.
Will Cedeno ever be able to hit for average?
He sure struggles in the bigs.  Did pretty good in the minors.
If we ever get rid of him he'll turn into
the MAN!
or not!
tonight's cub outfield...
...could very well be the worst one ever assembled.
that one was your fault! lol
yeah, no kidding.
I HAVE POWERS!
teddy will get out of this.
murton...case in point.
Damn the Brewers... and the Astros
Soriano spits more than any human on
the face of the earth, he's like a sprinkler
lmao
he's like a sprinkler
How many
key hits have Dodger pitchers had this series.  It seems like a lot.
stults looks like a future Ankiel
didn't we once want Pierre and Furcal?
looks like they have helped the Dodgers..
Lou, can you please change the outfield
Every ball hit to the outfield makes my heart stop for a second.  Please!  Move Monroe to rf and put Pie in cf.  Please!
Mulder is batting in the 8th spot tonight
and got a hit!  Larussa seems to try different things.
Larussa
is just getting lucky with doing that crap. No wonder why that team is below five hundred when their idiotic manager doesn't trust their hitter....
i hate larussa...
...as much as zevkalman hates pierre.
Time to punish Stults!!
Let's go Cubs!! Top of the order...please add on! I said "please"
Let's get a couple
and make life a little easier tonight.
sori just can't take a walk can he?
He swung at two ball fours
to strike out. Had he taken a walk, he would have scored easily on DeRo's double..Oh well..
derosa!!
almost hit that one out!
Wow i thought the circus came into town!!
a-rod...
just jacked his 47th & 48th, both in the 7th.
Kemp launched that one!
Just like Sammy the Rockhead used to.
by the way,
nice job by lee to just take it the other way and drive in a run.  that was a solid hit.
Yep..exactly what the doctor ordered...
You know Zambrano is mumbling to
himself, "why the f#@k couldn't they make that throw on Tuesday when I rounded third!"
LOL
That throw nearly killed their pitcher!

And we're probably lucky DeRosa didn't break his ankle, with all those stutter-steps.

speaking of hating people....
I can not stand Eckstein for some reason he drives me f'ing crazy
he's very pesky....
we all knew a guy like that in school
and gave him wedgies. :-)
i am now starting to hate
ankiel..
Kankel's 2R HR makes it 3-2 at Bush
what one postional player...
...do you wish played for the cubs within the last 15 years?

i'll go with paul o'neill. not the greatest, but very, very solid in every aspect of the game and as resolute as any player i've ever seen.

postional = positional
awesome.
chasing their starter in the 5th.
o ....
and also ankiel!
DeRo
What was DeRo saying (anyone that might be able to lip read). Scored the run but looked pretty pissed talking to Theriot...
I just assumed he was
complaining about "Mini-Froemming" Joe West...
I have a question ...
Is it illegal around these parts to call DeRo Mr. McDreamy?  He's definitely on my list of the handsome MVP--or Sixth Man--nominees on this year's team.

Sorry ... just had to release my girliness.  Back to our regularly scheduled Cub victory.

LRRF

lol my gf thinks the same thing
And ...
Don't forget the fact he was an Ivy League quarterback!  He is da man--even if he was brought up in Jersey.

LRRF

DeRo is hot...
He's replaced a void that was left for me by Todd Walker...
I agree ...
I always thought Walker handsome.  But Mr. McDreamy is a better player, thank goodness!

LRRF

Murton could blow it wide open
git r dun!
Damn ...
He didn't.
I'm not sure Quade
was much help during that adventure at third. Maybe that's why he's annoyed.
Astros
Hunter Pence is going to find a way to hit a 12 run home run, I just know it.
aww what a bad call for the Murton k!

Questionable call...
He went. But West is still a d*ck!
Yeah, I'm totally over
The Ankiel feel good story.

OK, Matty, I love you, but that was just embarrasing.

me
too but that homer he just hit was a monster shot
He swung at it. Good call.
It pains me to say that about "Country" Joe West, but it's true.
nice of mlb.tv
to randomly cut to commercial in the middle of the inning
and even nicer
to cut back in for the last pitch of the inning
Murton
is so bad.  I can't believe Lou hit him 5th.  He should be hitting 7th in this lineup and 8th in any lineup that doesn't feature Cedeno or Fontenot.
um...who deserves to be hitting ABOVE him?
if Theriot was in, he'd bat sixth at least..
As can be inferred from my post
anyone except Cedeno or Fontenot.
I'll throw
Pie in there too.  Anyone except Cedeno, Fontenot, and Pie.
I don't get it
either.
Come on Monroe
Forget it
Got the run back, though
One inning closer to the end.
Yep!
The Dodgers really are a good team.

But OH for a split with these LA Weenies!

Defense definetly...
affecting Monroe's plate appearances.
DeRosa is kinda cute
I mean, he's no David Aardsma... but still
Aardsma ...
Was just okay in my book--but I tend to like guys with dark hair, dark eyes, and a certain intensity.

I guess that's because I've always been entranced by Jewish guys, though I'm not moved by Marquis' appearance.  Or his pitching from time to time!

LRRF

HAs Cedeno gotten
a hit yet?
last hit
he got was in august. to be more specific, august 1st . . .
Lou must have been logged into BCB
Nice catch, Pie!
Lou listened to me (see above), and put Pie in center and moved Monroe to right.  Thanks, Lou, you saved my heart!
How many pitches
is Lilly at?
Okay
The Cubs have put 4 runs on the board.  I'm happy.  Pitching staff, do your thing!
Orioles down 17-2
They'll get back in it with studs like Bynum, Patterson, Moore, and Bako in the lineup.  LOL  Talk about giving up!
It's a beautiful thing
to watch Pie play defense. I can't wait for this kid's bat to catch up.

By the way, the Blackbeards just hit a three-run homer to go ahead of the Red Pigeons 6-3.

he is a delight to watch
pure instinctive talent at its best...
Agreed!
Its like a fish in water.

When his bat catches up - watch out, NL!

Pie!!! instant defense
Good thing Pie was put in!!
when was the last time
the cubs scored 10 or more runs?
i know
we won 10-2 vs the rockies
Aug 8
Beat the Mile Highs 10-2.
I think
it was in Colorado a few weeks ago.  If memory serves, Murton had a home run in that game!!
oh yeah
i remember that game.  i guess it just seems like other teams regularly get double digits, but we have those offensive outbursts so rarely
They scored 12
on Aug 16 to beat the Reds 12-4.
Amazing
If Pie wasn't out there now, it'd be 2 on and nobody out. Lou rules!
Oh look, a Major League Centerfielder!!
Nice catch, Felix!
They are showng
Kevin Hart highlights.

Man, he throws some shit!

WOW!

Right On Lilly!
Dead Birds down 2-6
Now that's what I am talking about
Damn it ...
This darn team is so good at squandering opportunities ... what happened to their ability to score with two out?

Good to see Lilly settling down--but I don't trust a three run lead these days.

LRRF

I'm with you
Hog!
Uhh ...
Wooooo Pig Sooooooie?  What's funny is that I hate the Razorbacks; the only time I admit any allegiance to them is when I'm in a different state!  I finally broke down and bought a Razorback shirt to wear in Michigan--for some reason people are entranced by this state and become happily surprised that I actually wear shoes!

Still, this might be a fun year for Hog fans.

But tonight's passion belongs to my Cubbies!

HAHAHA!
Sorry!

Well - at least your taxes are very reasonable down there!

The law of averages, I guess.
We were too damn good in June and July.
Give it up for Theodore Roosevelt Lilly!
Cedeno!
= "No" hits
Cedeno hates spending too much
time at the plate than what is absolutely necessary.
Ronny really makes...
appreciate the Riot.
ronny is stinky!
3 AB's
He's seen, what, 8 pitches? Is he worried someone won't save him a seat on the bench?
I wonder
how many more chances are they going to give this kid?
If we go 15-10 starting tonight
we should be golden...
i was lookin at the schedule...
...today and am of the same opinion.

15-10 should be enough.

cant
we just designate ronny for assignment or something??
He's serving his purpose tonight
tho, by giving Theriot a breather. But I'm impressed with Soto. That guy is gonna rake.
i would've rather...
dero move to ss and fontenot, even though facing a lefty, play 2b.

doesn't matter now.

Well - Fonty
hasn't had a hit since June.

Not that much better, unfortunately - he is in quite a slump.

IF the team makes it, its gonna be interesting to se if Fontenot will make the roster.

yeah, i know...
fontenot isn't much of an upgrade over cedeno, but, nontheless he is an upgrade, and he doesn't look like a 13-yeard old girl as cedeno does.
They will burn
his options soon and then cut bait.

He just has not blossomed.

With Darby signed, the writing is on the wall for this guy if he can't get his act together soon.

Major disappointment.

What?
A hyped up Cubs position-player prospect is a disappointment?  Stop the presses!
It shows you the value of Spring Training
he tore it up this year.
You mean...
this is not the ONLY ONE EVER?!

"HUH?"  (sucks in breath)

Seems like we have more than our share
of "can't miss"ers that miss badly lol
GODDAMN PIE!
it's really wierd
but somebody in the organization must really see something in ronny.  i can't imagine what, but that has to be the only reason he continues to play as a major league ballplayer
He seems to be pretty good
in the minors. just can't seem to get over the hump in the Show.
Marketing chick...
is hot..
No wonder she is in Marketing..
I like Cedeno's glove at short though
really?
he reminds me rey ordonez(sp?) i think the catch off a-rams glove was harder than that grounder he dove for and it went under his glove. i was sick of him last year.
But he hits like Izturis!
id
take izturis's "timely hitting" over ronny's never hitting anyday.
Lillly over 90 pitches
think this is his last inning?
whats with cub pitching with two outs?
i'd prefer...
his glove sitting next to him, on the bench.
IT'S MARMOL TIME!!!
lilly was a beast tonight!
carlos, you watching?
Nasty Boy is coming in.
I totally dig Lilly, but...
He ALWAYS looks like he was just teleported into the middle of the game... He looks like I would if the Cubs told me to go out there and pitch.
I'd take his demeanor
over Zambrano's at every chance... (teleported... ha!)
did lou just walk out
to the mound and immediately crack everybody up?
marmol
needs entrance music
I was at Lilly's last start
and man - this is NOT the same guy.

Yes!

Too bad
Hell's Bells is taken
Lilly was terrific...
and he did as a fly ball pitcher with a weak outfield for most of the game. Unlike Z, he didn't let it get to him. He reminds me a lot of Orel Hersheiser(sp?)..very tough.
didn't see that coming...
What the hell?
I bet Monroe wouldn't have done that :)
I hope Felix is ok
that looked rough
why pull lilly? bad move Lou
hmmmmm?
so marmol isnt dependable?
bite your tongue, man
your
signature says it all. at least the inning is over. howry or marmol for the 8th??
It was the right call
Lilly pitched well. Instead of taking chances of him completely running out of gas and opening up the floodgates, Lou was right in going to Carlos. He, Howry and Dempster haven't pitched in two days and are fully rested.
did I sat that?
no, Marmol is great, its just Lilly had a respectable amount of pitches and seemed to still be in control.
HUH?
That's too bad for Felix.
Despite ..
A few hiccups along the way, and perhaps because it's his virgin year in the NL, I've come to believe Lilly is our best pitcher ... and most reliable.

You get what you get. There's a certain joy in it.

LRRF

Let's make a deal -
DO NOT give KUDOS ANYMORE until the GAME IS OVER and the CUBS HAVE A W!!!!
Who's on 2nd?
Hu's on second?
Those 2 out walks'll kill ya
n/t
Nice
A guy brought in for his defense falls on his face.  Gotta love the Cubs.
Only the Cubs!
Hey, it happens to the best of 'em
Pie made a couple of nice catches for the other two outs. Not sure Monroe makes those look as easy.
Yep
Like in 2003 when the best defensive player on the team fumbles a routine double play ball in the 8th inning of game 6.  Happens to the best of 'em.  Gotta love the Cubs.
AHHHH!
STOP THE MADNESS!!!
It happens to other teams, too
Although not quite like that.
I could also
mention the first baseman in '84 who never missed a ground ball missing a big one in the playoffs in SD.  But I won't.

The scars, they run deep.

Talk about
wallowing in the mire.
Watching
Pie fall on his face took me to the dark place.  I'm back now.
Welcome, welcome back
You don't want to stay down there too long.
No Pierre!
Thank God!  He kills us!
Guess
Hu's not on 2nd anymore...
And Messmer
nails TMOTTB as always.

At least he rarely slumps.

i can't help but think of Furcal
as a villain, he just looks evil
he is
a villian for last season in more than 1 way
T. R.
...really needed an outing like this.  He's been scuffling a bit, and I'm sure Z's problems have made him feel even worse about his losing streak.

He looked really sharp, and if Pie (or even JJ) had been in CF all night, he might have had a clean slate.

Nice rendition ...
By the dulcet voice of Wayne Messmer ...
Nice adjective
Dulcet tones...

You'd prefer him over Ditka?

Actually ...
I kind of prefer the off-key guys.  Most of them try so hard, it's sweetly pathetic.

LRRF

God, I miss Wayne
singing the NA at the Madhouse on Madison back when the Hawks were good. That was the loudest building I have ever been in when we were in the playoffs. Remember when the Hawks actually MADE the playoff> lol
1984 ...
I don't know how many of us were conscious of Cubbie ball then ... but I seem to recall that Messmer was sidelined by a serious health condition ... was it throat cancer?

LRRF

He was shot in the neck
during a robbery attempt. Came close to his vocal chords. There was doubt if he'd ever sing again.
I just heard them
talking about him getting shot and wondered how it happened.
HE GOT SHOT
in the throat!

A robbery attempt.

Amazing recovery.

Minds think alike...
Bruce.
Good call
on holding out the "great" part ... speaking for myself, at least ... :)
It was 1994, some history
April 9th to be exact, near a bar by UIC, off Taylor St. He was shot in the neck and in critical condition for a couple days.

Wayne at the time was much more famous for his stirring rendition of the Star Spangled Banner at Chicago Stadium prior to the start of Blackhawks games. His singing coupled with the Barton organ and a packed Stadium of 19,000 screaming BlackHawks fans created a roar that will never be duplicated.

Chicago Stadium closed that spring to the [taped] voice of Wayne Messmer singing the anthem at 'Hawks games. Wayne returned to the hockey scene in Chicago as part of senior leadership of the new Chicago Wolves of the then International Hockey League (IHL, defunct as of 2001). Once part of the 'rival' Wolves, the Wirtz and the BlackHawks fired Wayne, only after he sung at the opening of BlackHawk hockey United Center in Jan, 1995 (after the lock-out).

Memories
are now NHL Nightmares in Chicago. It's sad.
That's putting it very nicely, thanks
It's pitiful. Laughing stock since they last made the cup finals in '92.
I love Alfie,
but man is he frustrating at times.
soriano swings like an...
intoxicated little person with too big of a driver.
Well, he needs a driver...
...if he's intoxicated.
ba-da-bump!
His nickname ...
Should be "O and Two."  Crikey, he annoys the hell outta me.

LRRF

Maybe the new owner
will put in the $1 million irrigation system or risk his $300 million in payroll "slips" and gets hurt at a critical time...like after a September rain. I think Lou will give a tape of Pie's fall to the new owner.
Excellent point
and excellent suggestion.
Carl -
If you haven't been to Wrigley after the Police concert - it really is a mess.

Worse than I have ever seen it - and I sit in the Upper Deck, so I can tell.

I mean, the Police Show was really cool - but not many fans knew it would tear it up.

And there was a big downpour right before game.

I have been quite a bit this year
and the outfield has never looked worse...
Pierre is up first next inning
and he'll probably try to get on with a bunt single.
I like DeRo
in the 2 hole.  Hopefully Lou leaves him there.
DeRo
likes batting second, and he is more suited to that spot (better at OBP than SLG).  What part of that combination does Lou not understand?

How about:
Riot
DeRo
Lee
Ramy
Sori
JJ/Floyd
JJ/Floyd
C
P

re: DeRo
But no one is protecting Soriano. You think he strikes out a lot now?
lou working hard to prevent another DP
I liked the interview with
DeRosa before the game.

phat

He is a GREAT
interview. Really funny and honest.

Phat -

I've never
heard an athlete be so candid and well-spoken.

phat

DeRo
Ivy Leaguers do sound more intelligent than the average jock.
WOW!
NASTY MF Pitch!
yea
but he missed where the catcher wanted it
Make em pay Felix.
Well
let's see if Pie can get a clutch hit in the majors.

phat

C'mon Felix!
Make up for your face-plant!
With Seanez pitching
even DeRo becomes a base-stealer!  Now we need to get him home.  An extra run or two couldn't hurt, could it?
Let's hope Pie makes them pay.
show them why we said bye-bye to Pierre! though Lou might send someone else up...but we lose his (slip & slide) defense!
Pinch hitting Kendall for Pie
I don't have a problem with this move. Will put Jones in CF.

wow
furture cubs a-rod just hit two in one inning!!
those late strike three calls
really show up the players.  i bet they hate joe west
I doubt it
The player hears the strike call right away.  The movement / gesture is for the fans / tv's sake.
So it's Kendall?
phat
Good call, Lou
This is who you want.
- sigh -
Give us
a good outing, now, Howry!
It just can't be easy, can it?
WOW !
Now THAT was a nice battle !  Way 2 Go, Howry !
Gotta love
Hendry stuffing his face and drinking a beer on national TV.  Nice work
Very nice play by Ronny there.
Good for Cedeno
Man, I really wish he'd learn how to hit.

phat

Is anyone else as confused
on Joe West's low strike as I am? The only consistency is his inconsistency. What a turkey. I just wish a foul would hit off the screen and catch him on his dome!
Joe West is notoriously inconsistent.
Except in EATING
That kid Matt Kemp is pretty impressive
n/t
Let's trade Cedno and Murton for him!
I'll throw in
Fontenot and Eric Patterson and a used infied rake!
Send that troublesome goat to LA too!!
lol
Anyone see on ESPN them showing Hendry..
...in the GM's booth stuffing his face with popcorn!! Hilarious.

Showed him again and still stuffing his face.

Still stuffing his face.
How does he do that without breathing.

Now he's sucking down a cocktail. THis is classic!!

 ESPN working him over!!

Put on ESPN!!!
Still stuffing his face
Geez...calm down...

Some of us don't get as excited as you watching a chubby guy eat on tv...

...but...whatever turns your crank...

It was must see TV
ESPN obviously knew what it had as they literally went back to him 6 or 7 times, stuffing his fat face and inhaling cups of popcorn and sucking down his cocktail.

stuffing his fat face and inhaling cups of popcorn
like I said...
....whatever turns your crank...
If that's
the kind of control the guy in the Dodger pen has tonight, I hope they bring him in next inning.
And he's in
and he walks the first two!
Good thing Monroe ran!
Yay !!!!!!
Now, let's get some runs !
I loathe kent.....
A-Rod hits two homers, Yanks go up 3 in wild card
he will be booed by the fourth inning tomorrow.
Phew, he lost that in the lights for a second.
Please...add on, add on. add on.
GO CUBS!!!
Piniella working on getting tossed .
What's he doing?
phat
on ESPN feed
Before going to commercial they showed Lou in the dugout working over West who clearly missed a called 3rd strike on Kent.

West has a very quick trigger, so I fully expected Lou to be tossed after commercial break.

I hate that Cowboy West
and what is worse Dempster will be pitching next inning with Joe West behind the plate.  Maybe I should take a long walk :-)
Easy
You'll make yourself apoplectic!  We still have 24 more after this.

Take a deep breath, and have some faith...

Howry is lights out
since May
Soriano
Thing is, he's just not good.  He's an offensive liability and average at best on defense.  Somebody remind me why we're paying this guy $18 mil per year?  I wish we could take half his money and give it to DeRosa and Theriot.
Or
We could give all that money to Carlos Lee...
Even Joe West couldn't call that
a strike. And it killed him!
Monroe
Good job.

phat

Obviously it was a missed Hit and Run..
...my money's on the rookie missing it.
t shirt on tv
does anyone know if the city of chicago flag t shirt with the cubbie heads in place of the stars is legit?  if so, where are they available?
That was a bit dumb
phat
Especially
with the complete lack of control that kid had.
Monroe is quickly working himself off
the post-season roster. Len asked, "Hu missed the sign?"
Bad, bad, play
By Monroe.

phat

Ward
I like the idea of batting for Cedeno, but not the idea of protecting a 2 run lead with a cold-off-the-bench middle infielder and Ryan Dempster pitching.
ANother good hit and run situation
 right here with Theriot.
like that
Theriot hit it and Soto ran all the way home.
The RIOT!!!!
YEAH BOYEEEEE!!!
Oh....
.....that's why Pierre is in LA.
The......Riot....
thats fun baseball right there....
theriot is a machine
Wow
Ryan Theriot does it again.

phat

How can ya not like Theriot? I mean, really...
I played H.S. baseball
against Theriot.  Couldn't love him more.
SAFE!!
he is pissed he didnt start!!!
Freakin' man crush on Theriot
I love that guy.
cedeno
watch and learn .. . . its The Riot Show
JJ RBI
6-2!!!
Theriot
MVP, I swear.

phat

OR -
The Phat MVP!

phat

Yes!
phat
JJ in da house!!!
Dodgers
have used 7 pitchers in this game! Nice.
I LOVE
INSURANCE!!!!  6 Freaking RUNS!!!!!!  YES!!!!!!!!
I Hope this can carry
them to another W tomorrow.
P L E A S E!
Do you still put in Demp
in the ninth?
Naw...ya save him for tomorrow afternoon..
Don't ya think, NB?
Definitely, not now
You might need him tomorrow.
If we get these next two runs in
I would let Dempster sit. I don't know why Lou doesn't have Pignitello or someone else up too.
Dempster will pitch the 9th.
Lots of Man Love
floating through BCB tonight for TheRiot and DeRo. Good to see. Let's score a few more and give Dempster a night off!!
The Riot is
everything you could ask for in a player..

100% focused, 100% effort everyday, no matter the situation...

that and he's good too...

How about that cajun boy
can't keep him on that bench!!!
Lassez bon temps boulez!
I meant...
Roulez - NOT Boulez
Let's give it up for
JJ who continues his torrid second half!!!  Strong argument for him as the second half MVP.
Bert Hernandez...
He and Satchel Paige were pitching on the same team!
Yes Ron
You are correct, "it's about time."

phat

I'm writing this before DeRosa's at bat ends
but however it turns out, this guy is such a professional hitter.  I love him.
Over
This ballgame is in the refrigerator for the Cubs, the door is closed, the lights are out, and the butter's gettin hard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hubbs!
You BELIEVE tonight?!

Wasssuppp?

Thank You Chick Hearn
Now this...
is a vintage 2007 Cubs win.  This is how they looked when winning those June/July games (outside of Murton's bizarre outfield defense).  Maybe they can bottle this mojo!!  Mostly solid defense, pitching that keeps the defense in the game, timely hitting, aggressive running (even though it didn't always work out).
Well...hopefully
I don't want to get ahead of myself, but is a lookin' good.
Derek Lowe is
a no good, filthy, dirty, sinker ballin', ground ball pitcher.

Man, I hope he has a shit day tomorrow.

i cant wait to see your auto signature
next month!
HAHAHA!
From your mouth to...
Everybody OK?
Or does anyone still want to give up tonight?
Runs!!!
Can we save the rest for tomorrow?
Keep
DeRo in the 2 hole!!!!!!
Let's pile on to these
Weenies!
Pile it on?
I'd rather keep some of the hits for tomorrow.

Here's the deal - Brewers will fade on the road. Cubs play better on the road then at home.

Cards will lose tonight - back to 2 games out.

Well - this is how
its played out so far.

I hope it continues.

Tomorrow's game is just as important.

DAMN! EVERY game is important now!!

Let's hear if for the Penn Quaker!!
I wonder if our Dartmouth
boy is into DeRo?
CLAPPING LOUDLY!!!
Yes!
I love this team!

phat

Well, the dam has broken
Now ... save some for tomorrow, boys ... :)
I have a sickness...
and the only prescription is some more Theriot
Now THAT
is high comedy.
Dodgers = Errors
What's wrong with these guys?
Well
That's one way to get on base.

phat

That must be Kent's 40th error this year...
just guessing. :-}
Sori
Anyone else as happy as I am to see Sori running well and scoring?  That may put his mind at ease as to how healthy his quad is.
Not to break up this love fest but...
If they keep throwing DLee a steady diet of fastballs and sliders away, when we he start poking it the other way?  He is trying to pull everything, which is why he is rolling over the ball and hitting into so many DP's.

IMHO

thats wasnt neccessary....
blow this thing WIDE open
Too bad Joe West is here
for another game.
The guy can't even plunk him
correctly.
Props to....
Ted Lily for coming up big in a game where the Cubs needed a starter to "be a stopper".

Ronnie Cedeno for the catch of Pierrre's deflected line drive.

A-Ram for some power

The whole line-up in the 8th for overcoming a botched bunt/hit and run and producing...TheRiot, Jones, Soriano, DeRosa.....here's to many more innings like that in September.

I second the motion.
3rd.
Lest we not forget...
Dempster for holding on in a non save situation....
I do believe
That Floyd is due.

phat

Ahh...
if all goes to plan, and we are up big tomorrow...then we can plunk someone late for retribution, and then not see them for the rest of the year.
About time we got some good karma
Thanks Hillebonehead
Wow
What a dumb play by Hillenbrand.  How is he still in the major leagues?  I guess there's hope for a guy like Murton.
He has been with the Angels, Padres
and now Dodgers this year. No one left. Dodgers drew the short straw.
I think he started here with the Snakes
another player that hasn't performed to his potential.
No
He came up originally with the Red Sox.  He was a highly touted prospect from their system.  Not unlike Murton.
Explain to Me Again
Why we are starting a player that another team DFA'ed?
Sam Fuld
Go get 'em, pal!
Definition of "pure joy"
Dempster with a big lead in the 9th. Now don't blow it!
Louuuuu
What is this his 1st season managing?
This is the second time this has happened.
He has to go make the switch before Dempster takes the mound.
What the hell is going on?
Gotta love September baseball.
strange.....its not 18-0, not sure what he
is doing...
AND DEMPSTER!
Starts where he left off!!
Good Pitch, Demp.
One of the real bright spots...
Oh-MAN! Didn't have to PITCH!
Sweet. Fly it. Play it!
Let's get the split tomorrow!
slick D in the 9th
FLY IT!!!!!
big win!
go cubs go!!
Great Game Cubbies!
Win ~14 more and we're in!
win 17 of last 25
has to be the goal. make the other teams bust their ass to beat us! Cubs need to be thinking 2 out of 3 all the time. Time to push to the finish line!!
Nice bounce back....way to go Lilly and the
amazing WTF lineup!!! Good debut by Soto!!! ARam slams one!!!Theriot comes in to help put it away. Not a bad night considering how scared I was to see that lineup....well let's get a split!!!
WOO HOO!!!!
CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN!
Doom and gloom nonsense:
If you insist being doom and gloomy here on BCB, it may come back to haunt you in the end...

"Ughh, what a terrible and catastrophic lineup.

I take back my previous good feelings about tonight's game and a Cubs W.

It's gonna be nearly impossible to win with this lineup.

Yikes...

I did my part tonught by exuding good vibes
;)
I'm proud of you, BigJohn
Keep 'er up. :)
will you do the same thing when
they get it right. you should, just to be fair.
Buck
you gotta understand, we're not advocating green grass and high tides 24/7.

The opposite of that also isn't advocated.

Maybe somewhere in between?

What a turnaround!
How many of you were despondent when DeRo hit into that 1st inning DP?

I guess that's why they play 9 innings.

Great game, T.R.!!!

FLY IT!
Off to the Gingerman!
I jokingly said we'd win 12-3 tonight last night
8-2 is just as good! lol
And the Brew Crew's blowout of the 'Stros...
...gains them nothing.
Who's got W flag duty?
I would but I am not knowing...   :-)
NICE WIN CUBBIES!!
let get another one tomorrow afternoon and salvage a split. GO CUBS!
Who has a W flag?
Brewers off tomorrow. chance to get it back to a full game. GO CUBS!!!
Go Cubs!
Thanks
it's a beautiful sight.
It's only WEDNESDAY but
Let's not forget to send good vibes to Smooth Jazz Man as he attends the Bears - Chargers game in SD.

Go Bears!

roster moves
Lou had to have set a Cub record with most number of position players getting into the lineup tonight.  16 by my count.
Why not?
there's 50 guys in the dugout!
CHECK THIS OUT:
In their last 10 gms -

BREW, 6-4

CARDS, 6-4

CUBS, 5-5

So, over the last ten games, the Cubs have lost one game in the standings, in spite of their certain mediocrity!

How BIZARRE!!

One game in the standings
One game is the difference between being in the playoffs if the season ended tonight and not.

Let's get hot and not look back.

That's why we have to play
better than .500 ball the rest of the way. Don't want the other two to gain a game per ten and catch us. If either start to play 6-4 on out, we better be at LEAST 6-4, 7-3.
if they can get some good starts...
they can keep this going. Tonight they played like they were in June/July....
Yes, they did.
They have so much more success when they consistently work counts, cannot figure out why they still are first pitch hackers most of the time.
Let's win on Thusday and start a hot streak!
Let's go 8-2 and pull away...
You should see my scorecard...
However, Al's is pristine. Even with 75 players entering tonight's game. (Well, it seemed like 75.) I have arrows pointing all over the place.
Al should scan his and show you. It's perfect.

But's it's a happy scorecard.

Chicago weather...I haven't seen rain in 10 months. But, walking north on Clark, an unannounced T-Storm at about 4:45. So, I stand in a garage at 3200 Clark for half an hour. (No thanks to CLTV/WGN Weather. "Warm and muggy tonight...")

I want to see that.
I've never kept score before. I'd like to see what a good scorekeeper does. I'm serious.

phat

Al, if you read this tomorrow
please scan your scorecard and post it so we can see how a pro does it. I score games at time at home and mine turn into messes lol
Funny

The Lord didn't answer my prayers.
Because Lou kept Soriano leading off. The guys on ESPN had a ball commenting that he shouldn't hit in that spot.

Regardless, it was a well played game. It was blown open by the regular guys pinch hitting and not by the horrendous lineup that Lou put up. In fact, that lineup gave us another DP in the 1st inning, the horrible defense and base running by "Neifi's payback" in CF (who had a Neifi! moment driving in a run once), Murton's adventures in RF, Soriano's 1,2,3 quick K's and Cedeño hitting fly balls all night long. (At least he brought his glove.) Only DeRosa rose up to the challenge, hitting 2nd. I'm glad I was wrong about that. The bad part is that because we won, Lou might be hard headed enough to repeat that kind of lineup tomorrow. Ughh!

Kudos to Soto for his defense, running and hitting. He is definitely our catcher of the future once he comes to know the pitchers and learns to handle the pressure this month. He's doing well so far. Hopefully Lou is impressed and will give Soto more chances to play. Kendall will appreciate the rest. Blanco can catch "Carloco" Zambrano (and punch him in the face) as far as I'm concerned.

Theriot is the team's spark plug.

I hope the players will now stop bitching at the fans' booing and recognize the "love" they got tonight. I also hope I only see Cedeño as a defensive replacement. And I don't want to see the starting lineup again, especially Monroe in CF. ESPN's Hershiser almost had a heart attack watching him play CF.

Finally, hat's off to Ted Lilly. He's been the stopper all season long and he didn't disappoint us tonight. He saved the best for the last month. Can Carloco use Lilly as a role model?

Let's split this series tomorrow and win the home stand!

The X Files in St. Louis.
Mark "Agent" Mulder was hit hard by a bunch of Pirates. What a nice picture!
Too bad Scully
was in Chicago and couldn't help him. :)
Would have loved to hear this talk

Short hops

Piniella and pitching coach Larry Rothschild met Wednesday with struggling, foot-in-mouth pitcher Carlos Zambrano for a ''nice'' conversation.

''Just to tell him to relax,'' Piniella said. ''We talked about quite a few things. That's between us. I'm looking forward to seeing him pitch Saturday in Pittsburgh.''

Take it out, Al.
Al took the magic number out of this site. I suggest he do the same with the playoff odds because they are depressing. They went down from 61% to 47% in a couple of days.
But I've had that link up almost all year.
And, it went back up today!
