While some commentators bemoan what happened the other night, and another suggested moving the resumption to Wrigley Field, personally, I think this is something that will increase interest in the World Series, especially if the Rays come back and win. It's likely a unique event -- may never happen again -- and is now part of baseball lore and history, like the earthquake-delayed 1989 World Series.
I'm not putting a pitcher box here because -- well, there aren't really any "starting" pitchers, and who knows, the two managers could change their minds before the first pitch ... of the bottom of the sixth is thrown.

I'm rooting for the Rays...
But I fear we may have to use a tactical nuke on Philly to subdue the fans if the Phillies lose now…
Worf - October 29, 2008
Fun facts,
The national anthem will NOT be sung before the game is resumed, God Bless America will be sung.
Take me out to the Ballgame WILL be sung during the stretch.
Beer will be sold during the first 7 innings PLAYED today, not after the 7th inning. (Translation, beer will be sold though the 13th inning).
cowsarecool220 - October 29, 2008
I'm glad we cleared up that beer thing.
Big selling point.
At least for me.
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
My gut tells me this one goes into xtras...
with the Rays winning
cubswgnrocks - October 29, 2008
Yeah, I see it that way too.
Al Yellon - October 29, 2008
Time for the Rays' dream to die tonight...
The Phillies will it all tonight. This series isn’t going back to St. Pete.
Jimmyeatworld - October 29, 2008
Weren't Balfour and Jenkins teammates in Milwaukee last year?
cowsarecool220 - October 29, 2008
Hmmm.....
Jenkins is a LHB with power. He can play RF. He is only 6 months older than DeRo. Is he finished, or might he have something left in the tank? I don’t think that he would be plan A, but he might be available cheap as plan C or D.
DeRoMyHero - October 29, 2008
NO NO NO NO NO
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
DeRos has been improved his game over the last few years,
Jenkin’s game has regressed.
cowsarecool220 - October 29, 2008
I agree.
However, it seems weird that one guy seems old and the other seems to be in his prime and they are only six months apart in age.
I’m still trying to figure that out.
DeRoMyHero - October 29, 2008
Not to mention...
…“JenkinsMyHero” doesn’t have as snazy a ring to it, does it?
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
Nah...
Geoff was never on my favorites list, let alone being entitled to the hero designation.
DeRoMyHero - October 29, 2008
Gee-off!!
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
This feels like being awake for 28 hours
except that this year’s World Series needs to be put to rest, not the players.
Man this series sucked. Piss-poor management from both Maddon and Manuel.
NittanyCub - October 29, 2008
Tie game!
Rocco goes deep!
cowsarecool220 - October 29, 2008
BOO-YAH!
Rocky is dead!
Long live ROCCO!
Worf - October 29, 2008
Yay!
I thought it was going to get really borring really quick, too.
GoCubbies34 - October 29, 2008
Those Pesky Rays!
They come back every time you think they’re dead.
cowsarecool220 - October 29, 2008
Once again, like I said in the first 6 1/2 inning game thread:
“Chase Utley can have my babies.”
Which doesn’t really make sense, but that’s okay.
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
SHARK IN THE WATER!
Wait, I mean The “Eyre” is Up and Breathing
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
I like to use statistics to argue things...
…but I do not know why I am more scared of the Phillies offense than I am the Cubbies.
The Cubs were first or second in R, H, BB, AVG, OBP, and SLG
The Phillies were second in R and SLG, but first in HR
Are homers really that more intimidating? Our offense was significantly better in most every category sans the last two (and scored 56 more runs in 1 less game), yet I’m still more afraid of the Phillies, top to bottom, than I am the Cubs. Argh.
Dan
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
How do you compare CBP with the two yards that are collectively known as Wrigley Field?
CBP is a pretty small yard; that would explain the HRs. How did the Cubs beat them in SLG?
DeRoMyHero - October 29, 2008
Hold on a sec I'll find out.
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
R
Wrigley: 1.068 (#8)
CBP: 1.029 (#15)
HR
Wrigley: 1.163 (#7)
CBP: 1.022 (#11)
Wrigley is a bit more run and home run-inducing, but the Phillies hit more dongs.
Dan
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
Whoda thunk it?
I would never have guessed that Wrigley would have coughed up more dingers than CBP, especially since the Cubs have a good pitching staff.
DeRoMyHero - October 29, 2008
Kinda bizarre...
to look at the clock and see that it’s 8:30pm CST and then look at the TV and see that a World Series game is in the 8th inning
MillsChC - October 29, 2008
Hush!
Don’t go giving Bud any ideas. He might realize that he can split each game over two days, stuff more commercials into each broadcast, stretch the post-season all the way to Thanksgiving, and then stand up and proclaim himself the saviour of baseball (yet again) because now kids can watch baseball games and still go to bed at a reasonable hour.
ballhawk - October 29, 2008
So if the Phillies hold on here and win after the top of the 9th...
a World Series win would be celebrated before 10pm CST (possibly 9pm CST)…. when was the last time that happened??
MillsChC - October 29, 2008
Probably when FOX didn't own...
…the WS game time slots. Back when there were day games?
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
World Series and Day Games?
When did they have those?
zevkalman - October 29, 2008
Sorry to break the news to you,
but they started early tonight and you missed the first 7 innings.
DeRoMyHero - October 29, 2008
This is more anti-climatic
than an episode of BIGGEST LOSER.
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
Okay, now we're up to some silly episode of LOST
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
And with the stolen base...
…we’re at “Dancing With The Stars” level.
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
Well I feel a bit sorry for Philly and their fans...
…what a less-than-ideal way to go out and win it. 40+ hours later.
For those that say this series was booooring, 4 of the five games were decided by a collective 5 runs. Glad to see the young Devil Rays get to the series (instead of the Yanks, Angels, or Red/White Sox), but the Phillies seemed destined to win it this year. Cheers.
Dan
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
That should be us...
but, I’m happy for the Pillies fans.
goddess - October 29, 2008
I'm glad it's over,
watching the games has been depressing but I can’t seem to stop myself from watching.
cowsarecool220 - October 29, 2008
Not when I heard Jeannie Zelasko say "your 28 year drought is over".
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Al Yellon - October 29, 2008
That's just stupid reporting
If every freakin’ team won, each team would average 30 year droughts. 28 . . . asinine.
Shanghai Badger - October 29, 2008
@ MSU this weekend…can we do it?
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
Depends which team shows up
Last Saturday’s would definitely have a chance. Previous weeks’ — no way.
Shanghai Badger - October 30, 2008
What an empty feeling
Should be the Cubs
Good for Scott Eyre
parrotinct - October 29, 2008
I wonder...were the Phillies really that good?
I mean Werth might not be as good as Sori (?), and Victoriono might not be as good as Johnson/Edmonds, and DeRo might be just as good as Burrel. Does it all fall on the shortstop (Theriot vs. Rollins?)
zevkalman - October 29, 2008
oh please
stop
cubsluver22 - October 29, 2008
It ain't as simple...
…as going position by position, and it never is.
The Phillies had a great lineup and I was very impressed with how they could scrape up runs when the big guys went cold. Also, they constantly pressured Tampa pitchers on the bases, which is something the Cubs need to be able to do.
The Phils have a very good club, and most of all, they wanted it.
MPH73 - October 29, 2008
credit where its due
they are the alpha and omega—they are the champions of baseball!! now we move on……
cubsluver22 - October 29, 2008
You could have made that a haiku
You were close….
Shanghai Badger - October 29, 2008
The world will never know
how much joy the boos of Bud Selig bring me.
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
Ha, ha. Yep. :-)
zevkalman - October 29, 2008
MVP?
I pick Hamels.
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
Ahhh
I remember when Eckstein won it…and it was the first time he had a new car since his first car in high school. Dork.
dtpollitt - October 29, 2008
I'll take a dork over a jerk any day!
cowsarecool220 - October 29, 2008
My 2nd favorite NL team wins the WS
But I wish it was my 1st favorite NL team….sigh….
CaliCub - October 29, 2008
Fox is usually pretty lame
But I like the way that they had a camera on every Phillies player, GM, the coaches, when the final out was made. It was pretty cool when they played those in succession. The moment of victory. — sigh —
vonde6 - October 29, 2008
That was very well done
MPH73 - October 29, 2008
it will never happen to the cubs
circles - October 29, 2008
please crawl back under the rock from whence you came...
vonde6 - October 30, 2008
Don't be a jerk, circles.
Shanghai Badger - October 30, 2008
I'm reminded of a line from The Godfather.
“We’ll get there pop, we’ll get there”.

Recent Short World Series
This is the fifth World Series in a row that did not go more than 5 games. That’s the first time ever we have had five World Series in a row that short.
memphiscub - October 30, 2008
Since 1997...
… when the Marlins/Indians series went 7 games (and to the last of the 9th), the WS have been the following lengths:
1998: 4
1999: 4
2000: 5
2001: 7
2002: 7
2003: 6
2004: 4
2005: 4
2006: 5
2007: 4
2008: 5
Not very encouraging. Five sweeps and three more five-game series in 11 years? No wonder fewer people are watching.
Al Yellon - October 30, 2008
1913-1916
That’s the only time I can see before this recent stretch that we even had four World Series in a row that did not go more than 5 games. During those years, we had 3 five-game series and 1 four-game sweep.
memphiscub - October 30, 2008
The 2009 Cubs season is under way!
