This handsome fellow played only one season for the Cubs in an eight-year major league career, and he was pretty bad. He had only one season in which he could have been considered even mediocre, and he never led his league in any positive category.
He's now a practicing attorney. Guess away!

Without any research...Gary Woods?
cubzfan - December 22, 2008
Interesting guess, but no.
Al Yellon - December 22, 2008
Rosemary Woods?
Emelie - December 22, 2008
I don't think she had a mustache.
Al Yellon - December 22, 2008
Mile Remlinger?
leothelip - December 22, 2008
DINGDINGDING!
We have a winner.
Al Yellon - December 22, 2008
are you serious??
damn that looks nothing like him
Chanman25 - December 22, 2008
No, the PICTURE isn't Remlinger...
… Remlinger is the last Cub from Dartmouth.
Al Yellon - December 22, 2008
oh yeah, I read this comment was out of place down low a little later
Chanman25 - December 22, 2008
James Woods?

Pete Broberg
It’s too easy when you use pictures from baseball cards! I’ve got every Topps base and traded cards of any Cub from 1951 to 2008. I can spot the pictures pretty easily and will now excuse myself from any future posts with baseball card photos….
And Broberg was a lousy 1-2 with a 4.75 ERA in 1977.
08 Cubs - December 22, 2008
Sheesh.
Those are the easiest photos to find, unfortunately. Most of these — not all, though — will be baseball card photos.
Broberg was pretty bad. He did go to an Ivy League school — Dartmouth — and is now a practicing lawyer in Florida.
Here’s what he looks like now:
Al Yellon - December 22, 2008
And he is not doing too badly, either
Check out the house he bought

Not too shabby.

Yikes
Property taxes of $ 97,000
Southside Steve - December 22, 2008
go Pete!
here’s a bit of trivia for you
Who is the most recent Dartmouth Grad to play for the Cubs?
DartmouthCubsFan - December 22, 2008
That's a good one.
I guess I could look it up, but I’ll let other people guess first.
Al Yellon - December 22, 2008
i should say Alum
I’m not sure that he graduated (like most of our other famous alums, Robert Frost, Dr. Seuss, etc). I think he graduated though…
DartmouthCubsFan - December 22, 2008
oops
I posted in the wrong spot
Mike Remlinger is a Dartmouth grad (as is Brad Ausmus)
leothelip - December 22, 2008
bingo-bango
Remlinger is the last Dartmouth Alum to play for the Cubs
DartmouthCubsFan - December 22, 2008
(unfair advantage)
I live in Hanover and teach at Dartmouth
leothelip - December 22, 2008
really?
how long have you been teaching there? I graduated in ’04
DartmouthCubsFan - December 22, 2008
Since moving here from Holland in ’02 (I grew up in Oak Park, IL)
leothelip - December 22, 2008
wow! awesome
what department, if you don’t mind me asking?
DartmouthCubsFan - December 22, 2008
Music
Find the distinguished trumpet teacher under IIP faculty
leothelip - December 22, 2008
well...
i definitely never had a class with you then! I am not musically inclined AT ALL
but good to know there is someone else with a Hanover connection on the site!
DartmouthCubsFan - December 22, 2008
so that explains your nick :-D
Emelie - December 22, 2008
Em
In a sense, yes, although I became hooked as a kid when Leo was managing.
Al, are we allowed to post personal websites on BCB? If so, and if anyone is interested, I’m happy to provide mine.
leothelip - December 22, 2008
Sure, if it's not commercial in nature.
Al Yellon - December 22, 2008
Classical music is rarely commercial :)

leothelip - December 22, 2008
You played at De Koonings funeral?!?!
OK. I’m wowed and you are now officially one of my top favorite BCBers. I bow to you, Mr. Lip.
Emelie - December 22, 2008
Em,
Yes. It was interesting to see his house/studio. Are you a painter?
Al,
BCB has been linked on my site since it was created. I’m certain all of your success here can be attributed to that :)
leothelip - December 22, 2008
Not a painter but a culture vulture
and I greatly admire De Kooning’s art.
Emelie - December 22, 2008
der Hund von der Erde...
LOL. Personally I would have gone with Hund eine fahrenden Gesellen (not sure about the plurality and gender agreements, my German is rusty), though that would probably be less suited to a basset hound…
znohitter - December 22, 2008
I believe it's Pete Broburg
I may not have spelled it right though
HectorVillanueva - December 22, 2008
It's Broberg.
And you’re right.
Al Yellon - December 22, 2008
I remembered it from baseball cards too
I seem to have a photgraphic memory for Cubs cards from the 70s and 80s
HectorVillanueva - December 22, 2008
Kind of looks like the head Cop from "Up in Smoke"
bren - December 22, 2008
Boy.....
…. Broberg was one those coulda woulda shoulda guys that came in a clump in the 70’s. Essentially straight from school (college in his case) and supposed to be a good to great starter and just never panned out. Two other guys from that era who come to mind who flamed out even much faster than Broberg were Larry Monroe from Forest View High School in Arlington Heights (I went there when he did), who was drafted by Veeck and the Sox and David Clyde from Texas. Both appeared in the majors right after being drafted and never did much of anything after that. Monroe has fashioned a nice career as a Sox exec since then though.
BeerCub - December 22, 2008
Ironic thing too....
…if you look at Broberg stats now and he were a free agent this year, someone would at least sign him to a minor league deal if not a guaranteed one to be a fifth starter.
BeerCub - December 22, 2008
Broberg was a 1st round draft, too.
I’ll bet he (and David Clyde, too) would have become good major leaguers if they hadn’t been rushed.
Al Yellon - December 22, 2008
He looks like that guy....
…from that old show Simon and Simon. Gerald McRaney.
TheHawkRules - December 22, 2008
Kind of.
Al Yellon - December 22, 2008
I thought he looked like Greg Gross
Cubster - December 22, 2008
Same cheesy mustache
Cubster - December 22, 2008
Yep.
Al Yellon - December 22, 2008
Cross between Jerry Martin and Greg Gross
BLou - December 22, 2008
Interesting things about Pete Broberg...
1. Was drafted by the Oakland A’s in 1968 and offered a $175,000 signing bonus (big at the time). He turned it down and returned to college, mainly to avoid being drafted into the Vietnam War.
2. Three years later, he was drafted by the Senators and signed only with the stipulation that he’d never have to pitch in the minors.
3. The Dodgers signed him as a free agent after a decent year with the depleted A’s, but when they told him he’d start the season in Triple-A, he asked for his release and went back to law school, essentially retiring.
4. He came out of “retirement” in 1989 and played in the short lived “Senior League” (remember that?).
I have a friend who swore Broberg was going to be huge for the Cubs after he had a great spring for them the season he was in Chicago. My friend still refers to guys that have huge springs and then suck during the season as “pulling a Pete Broberg”.
carmen_fanzone - December 22, 2008
Interesting stuff, indeed.
I did not know most of that (I did know he had pitched in the Senior League).
“Pulling a Pete Broberg”. Good one.
Al Yellon - December 22, 2008
