Also it looks like there isn’t a basket on the bleachers. So without guessing every 60’s player that I don’t know, anyone else with thoughts on clues to help narrow it?
Trying to find who this is I found this great old picture. Check it out. Since it is probably copyrighted, I decided not to paste it here. Be sure to click the large version.
In ‘62 that included El Tappe, Vedie Himsl, Lou Klein, Charlie Metro, Bobby Adams, Ripper Collins, Goldie Holt and Fred Martin, so that’s probably who’s pictured there.
Who’s who, I wouldn’t have any idea. Buck O’Neil was also a coach in 1962, but he’s not in the group.
but a few of them look a bit younger. 3rd from the right could be Andre Rodgers but who knows on the others. Looking at who appeared for the Cubs that year, wow.
Moe Morhardt
Jim McAnany
George Gerberman
Morrie Steevens (two e’s)
The resolution isn’t the greatest and I can’t tell if this shot includes straightaway center, but assuming it does, I don’t see the 8 foot crap screen that was there for 1963-1964, nor is there a green Astroturf tarp, which wipes out 1967-1969. It almost looks as if there are bleachers available for seating, which would suggest 1960-1962.
Now, really thinking outside the box for a moment, this guy is looks small with unmuscular (not a word, I know) shoulders, which would suggest middle infielder or pitcher. Al just said he’s not a pitcher, so let’s say he’s a middle infielder from 1960-1962.
It’s very possible I’ve wondered far astray here, but the people who played second or short from 1960-1962 are
Ernie Banks – not him.
Don Zimmer – not him
Jerry Kindall – this is who i am guessing
Tony Taylor – not him, hispanic
Grady Hatton – found pic, don’t think so
Sammy Drake – nope – black
Jim McKnight – found pic, don’t think so
Andy Rodgers – couldn’t find picture
Ken Hubbs – not him – ruled out
Mel Roach – don’t think so
Alex Grammas – found pic, don’t think so
Elder White – couldn’t find pic
Daryl Robertson – another possibility
In conclusion, my first guess is Jerry Kindall and my second guess is Daryl Robertson
Since Al's not around, I'll save all the future guesses by saying....
DING DING DING! WE HAVE A WINNER!
Rich Bladt played all of 10 games for the 1969 Cubs in June. The first appearance in the big leagues was pinch running for Billy Williams.
He was traded to the Yankees and didn’t make it back to the majors until 1975, appearing in 52 games for New York before being involved in the Paul Blair-Elliot Maddox trade to the Orioles, but he never made it back to the bigs.
OK - but can anyone identify any of the four guys in my pic?
That was taken at Phil Shmit’s – all four of the guys were apparently Cubs at the time. My grandma is on the right – she was a waitress there for 30 some years.
I’m not sure of the guy in the middle top row….but he looks familiar. I think that’s Jay Johnstone on the left, but not sure the time frame works out for him.
But I am sure of Reuschel and Tidrow is the one in the front row.
Bob Howry!! Winner!!
Tate491 - December 29, 2008
Not Howry.
But you’re right, he does resemble Home Run Howry.
Al Yellon - December 29, 2008
He looks like Bob Howry...
…after a two-week heroin bender.
daver - December 30, 2008
Ooh.
That’s cold.
Al Yellon - December 30, 2008
Thought the same thing...
lol…
my first instinct was, bob howry at 17 on a wrigely tour.
bobby h - December 29, 2008
though it's not wrigley in the picture...
…i initially thought so anyway…
bobby h - December 29, 2008
you're kidding right
it is Wrigley
CubFreak - December 29, 2008
Yes, it's Wrigley.
Look again.
Al Yellon - December 29, 2008
I know 3Xs but
I know it’s Wrigley
I know the Torco sign was out in right
I know it was the 60s
But I don’t know who this guy is?
Was he a Bum?
Bleacher Bum?
CubFreak - December 29, 2008
LOL
Nope. Maybe a former pitcher, who knows?
Al Yellon - December 29, 2008
Lefty or righty
CubFreak - December 29, 2008
Just losing my mind
…that’s all…recognized it, then didn’t, and did…
bobby h - December 29, 2008
No Clue
But he don’t look happy
carolinacub - December 29, 2008
agreed. Too bad he's not smiling, 'cause if he was...
…I think he’d look exactly like “Jack”, one of Elaine’s boyfriends on a Seinfeld episode.
ballhawk - December 29, 2008
Ken Crosby 1975
CubbieintheSouth - December 29, 2008
Nice guess, but no.

Nope.
Al Yellon - December 29, 2008

carolinacub - December 29, 2008
Yeah, there is a similarity in the look.
Al Yellon - December 29, 2008

That's what the Man wants you to think.
daver - December 30, 2008
Hmmm.
Come to think of it, the field does look a bit like a grassy knoll…
Al Yellon - December 30, 2008
Rick Wrona?
wrigley_boy - December 29, 2008
Nope.
First clue: the background.
Al Yellon - December 29, 2008
Thought about that
I see that there’s no Torco sign, but I wasn’t sure if the guy was just blocking it.
wrigley_boy - December 29, 2008
The Torco sign is on the other side of the field.
Look more closely at the bleacher walls. That’ll help.
Al Yellon - December 29, 2008
Ah....
I was turned around a bit.
wrigley_boy - December 29, 2008
Bill Hands?

He does have that irritated look though.
CubbieintheSouth - December 29, 2008
Ken Rudolph?
PurpleLineToWrigley - December 29, 2008
Nope.
Al Yellon - December 29, 2008
??? This might be the one that stumps us.
CubbieintheSouth - December 29, 2008
My God.
Just looking at the background makes me want to get a Wrigleyville in Photos book, 1914-present.
Glen Hobbie?
Flatley - December 29, 2008
The suspense is killing me!
Flatley - December 29, 2008
Not Hobbie.
Al Yellon - December 29, 2008
This is from the 60's based on the uniform neck
Also it looks like there isn’t a basket on the bleachers. So without guessing every 60’s player that I don’t know, anyone else with thoughts on clues to help narrow it?
rlpete - December 29, 2008
I should add it could also be late 50's
rlpete - December 29, 2008
Clue two.
1960’s is correct.
Al Yellon - December 29, 2008
My guess
Dick Ellsworth

It’s worth a look.
rlpete - December 29, 2008
And who can identify the 7 players/coaches on the right?
You have the year but since it is spring training, they could be tough.
rlpete - December 29, 2008
I can't figure out one person above.
CubbieintheSouth - December 29, 2008
Those must be the College of Coaches.
Al Yellon - December 29, 2008
The one next to Santo looks like a coach
but a few of them look a bit younger. 3rd from the right could be Andre Rodgers but who knows on the others. Looking at who appeared for the Cubs that year, wow.
Moe Morhardt
Jim McAnany
George Gerberman
Morrie Steevens (two e’s)
Who are these guys? No wonder the team lost 101.
rlpete - December 29, 2008
103, actually.
That ’62 team was awful.
Al Yellon - December 29, 2008

Maybe. I’ll check later to see if you guys have guessed right.
Al Yellon - December 29, 2008
It almost got there.
Is there a required number for an overflow thread?
