SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- Today is the final day of Cactus League play. For those of us who have been here in Arizona for a while, it will be "weather shock" to return to the chilly Midwest tonight.
In the meantime, one more day in the sunshine before I fly home tonight. Today's game starts an hour earlier than usual so that the ballclubs can break camp, and the Cubs head to Las Vegas tonight for their two-game series vs. the Mariners this weekend.
For those of us (most of us, I'd say) who grew up with the Cubs and WGN, here's a little bit of the history of WGN and the Cubs and an announcement that there will be a two-hour special called "Cubs Forever: Celebrating 60 Years of WGN TV and the Cubs", at 6 pm CT on April 20.
Kerry Wood doesn't want any special "entrance song" when he comes in to close games:
"I don't think Wrigley is that type of ballpark," Wood said. "That's more of a generational thing for closers— Trevor Hoffman started it with 'Hells Bells,' and [Mariano] Rivera and Billy Wagner and so on and so on.
"Fans are so loud at Wrigley Field in the ninth inning I don't think you'd be able to hear any noise on that sound system anyway. I've never really thought about what song I'd use."
To which I say: good for him. Based on what I've heard for him coming in during ST games, it'll be really loud. Cheering.
The other day when I posted spring training attendance figures, I inadvertently left out one game. The correct figures are: in 14 dates, the Cubs have drawn 168,498, an average of 12,035. They'd need to draw almost 13,400 -- physically impossible -- to break the record average of 12,125 set in 2004. So that won't happen, but they're expecting another sellout today.
Both teams have announced that "minor leaguers" will do most of the pitching today, but who knows exactly what that means. It would normally be Ted Lilly's turn, but he's being held back till tomorrow to keep him on a "normal" four days' rest for his first regular season start next Wednesday. (I think, just as Lou didn't want Z to face the Brewers earlier in the spring, he probably didn't want Lilly to face them twice in six days, either.) The Brewers don't have an announced starter, either.
Today's game is on WGN-TV, and on MLB.com radio and MLB.TV via the MLB.com Mediacenter.

what? no wild thing?
cubsonWGN4ever - March 27, 2008
Speaking of Lilly...
I think he's been talked about the least out of all the pitchers this spring.
I find that his stats don't really tell me much other than he hasn't given up a lot of walks (4) and HR (2).
He has started 4 games, and has an ERA of 6.00. Did he just get blown up in one outing? Has anyone seen him pitch more than once? How does he look overall? How has he looked his last couple outings?
bap - March 27, 2008
Woody is so Cubs...
I love his remarks about the song. These are the reasons I always wanted him separated from Prior when they were struggling "together".
Woody is not concerned with anything but doing his job and enjoying it. Well he loves to win too but I just admire the way he has handled himself throughout the past four seasons. It is refreshing to watch guys mature as ballplayers and as people.
Kinky Reggae - March 27, 2008
He just "gets" it
About being a Cub and playing @ Wrigley Field. I hope he can resurrect his career and stay with the Cubs for along time.
tony412 - March 27, 2008
Exaclty.
It's hard not to root for a guy who "gets" what it is to be a Cub and play here in Chicago. He doesn't take it for granted and has worked tremendously hard to come back.
It would be truly something if he came back and had a good year as a closer in '08.

Al Yellon - March 27, 2008
Exactly...and that is the reason he's here...
...he could have made more money elsewhere but he knows nothing would be better than winning here.
JB 23 - March 27, 2008
Here, Here
It is awfully refreshing to see an athlete who is about more than the money. Too many of these players are about the money and that's it. Case and point is Johny (sp?) Damen who said, during his free agent year, he would never play for the Yankees. Look who he is playing for now. I think that if someone were to ask me who exemplifies what it means to be a Cub the most, I would tell them Kerry Wood. Here's to hoping he goes out there and proves all the nay sayers, especially including That-Writer-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named.
gwood - March 27, 2008
Glad he wasn't mentioned
Wish everyone would adhere to this new policy.

Playing Field
Just wanted to give a quick update on the playing surface at Wrigley. They had the door open in RF on my walk to the L this morning and I stopped to take a look in.
They've removed the "wedding banquet tents" sometime yesterday that were covering the infield. The grounds crew was working on the infield this morning.
The OF grass looks surprisingly good. Not lavishly green, but after being under more than a couple inches of snow as recently as this weekend, it looks pretty good.
The grounds crew has done a terrific job all winter long. This, coupled with the resurfacing project, should have Wrigley in tip-top playing shape this year.
We are suppose to get more snow here in Chicago this weekend, and that will have an effect on Monday's game, but it appears that grounds crew is working hard to make sure there is a safe, playable surface.

Like "Go Cubs Go"?
;-)
initram - March 27, 2008
Maybe, just maybe
After a couple 30-40 save seasons, both us and Wood can revisit this whole entrance song thing.
tony412 - March 27, 2008
Great call Wood
I dont like the enterance songs. I also dont like teams shooting off fireworks when a player hits a solo shot when their team is down 5 runs. I dont like circus pinwheels or jumbotrons bigger than the parking lot. I dont like the hotdogs stands and bathrooms and everything else sponsored. I don't like UnderArmour logos.
Keystone80435 - March 27, 2008
so you don't like
Comiscular Field, period. And you also don't like the UA signage @ Wrigley. Would you like to pay an extra $10 per ticket to make up for the revenue lost by taking down the UA logo? It's not that serious. It's not like they're mowing the whole outfield grass in a logo or anything.
I dislike the south side park for all those reasons you listed as well. It's a chick park. They get to "watch things on tv".
tony412 - March 27, 2008

Looking forward to the game today. :-)
sue369 - March 27, 2008
You'll love this Sue369
I had a dream last night I was at a Cubs game. Not at Wrigley but it was a home crowd. Someone yells "Zambrano is signing autographs." So I went over and passed my hat through the fence to him. He signed it and passed it to another player. After 8 or so players signed the hat someone threw it back over the fence. I picked it up and all the players had signed the inside of the hat. The one sig that stood out said this.
Cliff
The Cubs have the best MILFs.
Soto
Now what in the heck is that about!?! ahahha
Keystone80435 - March 27, 2008

great call by Wood's on nixing any idea of an entrance song for him....a true baseball fan doesn't need a jumbo screen to tell them to get loud or some D-bag trying to pump us up. Can't wait to shade out on work early Monday to catch the Cubs!!!

cubsfan25 - March 27, 2008
So glad we're getting over...
The stubborn madness of Soriano as leadoff!!
Reddevil - March 27, 2008
Interesting...
... that they have added a DH. On the pre-game show with Santo and Piniella, Lou mentioned that they approached Milwaukee with the intent to (1) say that they are only going with minor league pitchers (as to not give them a sneak peak), with the exception of Marshall, and (2) to give more at bats for regulars (thus the DH).
initram - March 27, 2008
Bako with Dusty
Paul Bako has put together a new career for one that can't hit a lick... Kids wanting to make it the The Show should take a second look at that catching gear, and maybe spend a little time learning the game and what goes through pitchers head..... Good for him.....
James031 - March 27, 2008

Gonna check out the view from...
...the new Harry Caray's for today's game. Stopped in there very briefly last week - it was an absolute zoo. I realize the NCAAs were going on, but was very surprised that they didn't have the Cubs game on at least one TV. Hopefully it'll be a little less crowded today. the Cubbies season opener will be on mlb.tv?
lilkimmer77 - March 27, 2008
As a regular season game...
yes, as should all the rest of the "televised" games the rest of the year.
Unless it's a "national blackout" game on ESPN/FOX...which is every single yankees and red sox game I think. Or if you live within an ICBM's range of a major league ballpark. Or your house/apt # is divisible by the square root of the result of the sum of the two teams' uniforms #'s on the 40 man roster. Other than that, yeah, you'll get the game on mlb.tv

Murton
We are going to regret not giving Murton a better chance.
drodd - March 27, 2008
Why?
I am a Murton fan BUT....he would be a great DH. He is a natural hitter. Regretting not giving Matt a "better chance" is a bit ridiculous, don'tch think? TO regret that, we would have to know just what would've happened if we kept him and that is an absolute impossibility unless you are omniscient. To have power like that would be nice, eh?

WGN-HD?
I've got Direct Tv at work and I know we get CSNC-HD, and I thought we got WGN-HD, but I have no clue what channel it would be on and haven't found it listed on any channel guides on the internet. Does anyone know if Direct Tv carries WGN-HD and if so, what channel it would be on?
Louie - March 27, 2008
no idea, but the game is on 192 here in Chicago and it's in SD, not HDTV, despite being the HD channel.
northsider - March 27, 2008
(technically, Evanston. Comcast.)
northsider - March 27, 2008
ah...
it says channel not available, so maybe we don't get it because it's not "local." I'm right in between Chicago and Indy, so I'm not sure. I was just curious because the spring training games on comcast were broadcast on both, though on the HD station, it was a 16 x 9 SD broadcast. It still looked nice though.
Louie - March 27, 2008
if you're close enough to pick WGN
up on a regular antenna, you can pick up it's HD feed out of the air. Dunno what "right in between Chicago and Indy" means, tho.
drewishdrewid - March 27, 2008
Lafayette
Louie - March 27, 2008
could have been a 16:9 stretch setting on the TV?
northsider - March 27, 2008
I don't know,
I don't think so, the graphics were set up as if the SD broadcast were a center-crop.
Louie - March 27, 2008
my cable box won't let me stretch 4:3 broadcasts (such as this one) broadcast on HD channels. if i switch to regular ol' channel 9, though, my TV can override. (53" Panasonic rear projection)
northsider - March 27, 2008
Usually
if something is in SD on an HD channel it will just have the black bars on the sides, though TNT does stretch it's commercials.
Louie - March 27, 2008
yep, it's letterboxed for me. all graphics are set up that way though, since not everyone can take advantage of the full picture. it drives me crazy, so much wasted space on the left and right sides.
northsider - March 27, 2008
I'm not sure
if they advertised the comcast broadcast as in HD, but they had it on their HD channel, and it was definitely an upconverted, though I believe 16 x 9, SD image

Wha?
santoswoodenlegs - March 27, 2008
so we could release
Cedeno, who made the bad throw.

It wasnt the best of throws
But Aramis hardly even tried to catch it.
okiecubbie - March 27, 2008
because he knew it was too far away?
drewishdrewid - March 27, 2008
No
It was a couple feet on the home side and low, but Aramis just kind of stabbed at it and bounced of his glove and into the stands. Not a good throw at all, but in a game that mattered I think Aramis would have stopped the ball from getting away. Or at least made more of an effort.

Jim: I'd never announce the final roster until the last game in Vegas. Still some decisions to make. Gotta decide which way to go in the bullpen w/the left-handed situation. We don't think Eyre will be out that long, which will affect who we keep. None of the guys still here deserve not to be on the club, including Matt Murton. The better team you have, the tougher decisions you have.

Jim: We've worked on 5 or 6 different guys in trades, but I think we ended up with the better fit with Reed. Pie has really come on in the last few weeks. We hope that will continue to blossom. The trade people have been talking about for 3-4 months, who wouldn't want to add a player like that? We weren't chasing a LOT of people. And if that trade doesn't happen, I guess I would tell you that wasn't stopping us from doing other things. Everybody likes to weigh in. We knew why we tried to add a player like that, and we're still very happy with Mark DeRosa. When you have a chance to make a club better though, you gotta do it.

Keystone80435 - March 27, 2008
Yes, I type fast.
Len: Matt Murton now playing LF, Micah in RF. Can you comment on Murton?
Jim: Well we have a decision to make after Saturday, whether we keep him on the bench or take another infielder or another pitcher. Something can happen in Vegas, tweak a hamstring or pull a quad. Murton's a good player, I think he's an everyday player on a lot of clubs. Unfortunately we have a good one for now and the future. We've looked at some deals that would help us AND Matt. I talked to him the other day. I told him we have to look after the Cubs, but looking after Matt is 1a. He knows where we're coming from, and I told him we wouldn't give him away just to help his situation. Looking for something fair. And he knows it.
Len: Most happy about?
Jim: Really happy w/how we pitched. Rich Hill had some bad outings but the rest of the rotation pitched well. The BP is very good. Wish we could keep the Lahey kid, the Rule 5 kid. Woody of course is a big plus. Very encouraged about the progress Hart has made, Michael Wuertz. We know we can count on Howry and Marmol. Playing better defense. Playing better the last week. Very pleased with Pie both offensively and defensively. Reed really rounds out the OF for Lou.
northsider - March 27, 2008

tony412 - March 27, 2008
Bob: Bringing in Reed helps Pie?
Jim: Exactly. We rolled the dice a little to get a player like that by waiting until ST, but Reed like I said is a better fit than the others we chased. It's not like Felix is looking over his shoulder but after his 2007 you don't want to just hand it to him. There will be some tough weather in May, some tough lefties when we want to give the kid a break and let him get his feet under him.

Jim: We can't keep him (Lahey) now with the pitching we have. He'll go through the waiver process. Same rules. Someone can take him or he'll go back to the Twins.
Len: Biggest concern besides health?
Jim: I'd like to see us get off to a decent start in April. We didn't do that last year and we thought we would. You're right, health is most important. I don't think there's any doubt your stars will hit. Hopefully better than the beginning last year. If we can get Hill back on track like he was last year I think the rest will take care of itself.
northsider - March 27, 2008
There Was a Lot of Back And Forth With Waivers on Lahey...
...and it looks like he will have to clear. There's fear that he'd be picked up.
If he doesn't, he can be offered back to the Twins. Most likely the Twins would want him back, and then possibly complete the Monroe deal...

Last part of the Jim interview
Bob: Opening in Japan? (Reminder: the Mets and Cubs opened in Japan in 2000, Bob.)
Jim: I like it, I think the game has become such a global game and the rest of the world has gotten so much better. I'd like to see the USA get back on track at the amateur level. I'm gonna get off track here, this is such a passion of mine. We need to develop our own players more. It's nice to have the other countries come over, but if we're not careful we're going to have a lower percentage of American players than foreign players. But overall I think it's great for the game that it's becoming global.
Len: Okay thanks Jim!
Jim: You got it.

Len's recap: I think it's classy how Matt reacted to the roster crunch. All he can do is play the best he can, and the rest that's out of his hands will take care of itself.
Bob: Matt's agent is calling or demanding a trade. Matt's been around the game a while. Jim is looking for something. Matt may not like it very much but he goes about his business. He'd love to be a Chicago Cub but if he's not he'll play for whoever.
Len: From a business perspective, he has no leverage!

Len and Bob
Talking about opening in Japan. Bob doesn't like it. "It's America's game! Your Opening Day should be in America! It used to be in Cincinnati every year. What happened to that? That's when baseball season started. I bet casual fans don't understand what's going on, or know games have been played already. For MLB, and I'm fully in support of ridding it of PEDs, but every chance MLB has to make it hard for their players to play at that level, they seem to take that opportunity! Cold weather, bad travel, and now Japan! Those guys are going to be whacked for two weeks. You're putting these guys in a position where they're not going to perform their best baseball and I think it's a huge injustice to those guys on the trip. But it is a competitive advantage because they get to start their 1-2 pitchers for the first four games of the season!"
Sheesh, Bob is pretty fired up about this. Both Len and Bob have failed to mention that the Cubs opened in Japan in 2000.

berselius - March 27, 2008
This...
is the madding thing about Cedeno...he'll have a game like this, and we'll all let out a collective breath thinking, OK...he's going to get it. Then the very next day you'll see him get picked off, make a throwing error and GIDP on the first pitch after the pitcher walks the batter in front of him on 4 straight pitches.

Even More from Bob "U-S-A!" Brenly (thanks NofWrigley)
Bob: Not to mention the disruption in the Japanese league. They've already started their season over there!
Len: Yeah, Bobby Valentine was upset about being overshadowed.
Bob: "Our problem isn't attracting Japanese kids to play baseball, it's attracting AMERICAN kids to play baseball! I think we're going about this all wrong. No doubt it's a global game and being played in places you never thought it would be played, but it's baseball, let's play it in AMERICA."
Bob: Just the cherry on the sundae here then I'll give off my high horse. These are my views, they don't represent those of WGN or the Cubs. Sean Casey went over and got hurt, now he has to sit down. What if that's your star player/pitcher? Now he's hurt for a while.

puckishcubsfan - March 27, 2008
Is Lee getting hurt before the opener?
Nobody is expecting Derrek to get hurt, unless the team has to travel to Japan. We're not hoping he gets hurt either, but if he does, why wouldn't you give a guy who has raked all spring a shot? Calm down man.
santoswoodenlegs - March 27, 2008
My point`
Santos these people seem to think we'll be okay without Lee because we have Hoffpauir.
Completely based on Lee having a bad spring and Hoffpauir having a great one.
puckishcubsfan - March 27, 2008
The basis is kinda obvious...
the argument is if Hoffpauir would be better than just inserting Ward @ 1st Base, if god forbid Lee gets injured.
santoswoodenlegs - March 27, 2008
quite.
drewishdrewid - March 27, 2008
Actually
Actually they'd be better off with Ward who is a very good proven major leaguer at first if Lee were to be injured.
puckishcubsfan - March 27, 2008
Oh man...
a Dusty-ite....only "proven" major leaguers allowed huh?
santoswoodenlegs - March 27, 2008
I don't think so
maybe a better way to put it is DLee has someone to keep him on his toes. Perhaps he will have a really great year because he knows he has to put in some major effort.
love the ivy - March 27, 2008
Come on
Come on you really think he loafs it?
This is ridiculous. The guy has had a bad spring. We're not talking about a top prospect here either or a guy who every team is clamoring for.
puckishcubsfan - March 27, 2008
I am not saying he loafs
and I am not saying I want him gone. He is one of my fave Cubs ever. I am saying it might be a little reminder that there is talent out there. Who doesn't need a little competition to keep 'em sharp?
love the ivy - March 27, 2008

Cubs announce league change
CHICAGO - Cubs GM Jim Hendry announced today that the team will play in the American League West Division so Matt Murton can play everyday in the line-up. The Cubs will return to the NL as soon as Murton is released or traded.
northsider - March 27, 2008
Time for an unpopular opinion...
Cubs should try to trade DLEE. He has had exactly one great year in his career, and he has already entered his decline. None of his other seasons have been significantly above average for his position, and he strikes out alot. Aside from that, my main complaint is that he seems to crumble under pressure. During his fab 2005, we all blamed the huge number of solo shots on Dusty's lineups, but maybe he just isn't comfortable with runners on. Furthermore, his postseason numbers have always looked like garbage, starting with the Marlins. Look it up. What other teams need a 1st baseman?
Jerry Mumphrey - March 27, 2008
doesn't he have a no-trade clause?
also, I seem to recall him hitting something important as a Marlin against the team they were playing in the Pennant series... who was that team, I can't remember...
It's not like our guys have had a whole lot of post-season experience as a whole...
drewishdrewid - March 27, 2008
Also
Also last year was his first year coming off a major iniury. The reason he had so many solo shots in 2005 was nobody was on base ahead of him.
puckishcubsfan - March 27, 2008
D. Lee...
...does have a no-trade clause.
initram - March 27, 2008
which makes this all moot anyway.
drewishdrewid - March 27, 2008
It should be anyway
Unless Hendry had his brain removed or someone had naked pictures of him in a compromising position.
puckishcubsfan - March 27, 2008

initram - March 27, 2008
That hit was a big deal because he was 0 for the playoffs up until that point.
Jerry Mumphrey - March 27, 2008
Big news
The GMs of the rest of the NL have petitioned the Commisioner to have Jerry Mumphrey replace Jim hendry as Cubs General Manager. They want someone in charge of the Cubs who would trade their 2nd best all around player because he had a bad spring because a career minor leaguer had a great one.
Jerry you're talking like we have Prince Fielder.
puckishcubsfan - March 27, 2008
No man, screw Hoffpauir. Me and Leon just want our old jobs back.
Jerry Mumphrey - March 27, 2008

For the record I feel better because of Hoffpauir if Lee were to miss a couple of weeks than if I would otherwise but not an extended time.
puckishcubsfan - March 27, 2008
No I soured on him after I noticed the pace at which he was collecting strikeouts last season...
That, and his power numbers are barely average for 1B.

In other words you don't value defense, batting average and OBP at all. You only value homeruns and don't know about how it takes 2 years to fully recover from a broken wrist.
puckishcubsfan - March 27, 2008
Fontenot
I know Fontenot showed some promise at times last year but I would have kept Cintron over him.

Fly ball to CF
Pie handles it easily, 1 out. Runner at 1st. 9-9, top 10th.
northsider - March 27, 2008

McGehee's throw sails past 2nd base, no Cubs middle infielder thought to cover. The Brewers now have a gift runner at 2B with 1 out.

northsider - March 27, 2008
