Bleed Cubbie Blue

What Happens In Vegas BETTER Stay In Vegas, and Open Thread: Cubs vs. Mariners, Saturday 3/29, 2:05 CT

All you need to know about last night's 10-2 Cubs loss to the Mariners is contained in this note from the above link:

Raul Ibanez added a line-drive, two-run shot barely missing an inflated cow atop the right-field fence.

That's not all that happened last night, of course (Seattle hitters pounded five other HR off Ted Lilly and Jason Marquis, and in less baseball-related news, Kosuke Fukudome was photographed next to a Las Vegas showgirl, looking extremely uncomfortable), but that note made me laugh, as did the HR itself when I saw it, which was just about the last thing I saw before going to sleep to get up for work this morning. Good thing, too.

Let's hope that what Marquis and Lilly did DOES "stay in Vegas", as the saying goes, because that's not a good sign if it doesn't. The only other Cub who pitched last night, Kevin Hart, threw a quiet scoreless inning. The linked article also says:

Manager Lou Piniella expects to use all of his bullpen over the two days in Las Vegas.

Matt Murton may be traded before tomorrow. Or not:

The Cubs don't want to rush the process, in part to make sure they get the best deal possible but also because an injury in one of the two exhibition games in Las Vegas could create a need for Murton on the roster.

Gordon Wittenmyer writes that Lou says both Sean Marshall and Carmen Pignatiello will pitch today, and I would also expect Kerry Wood to throw an inning. Meanwhile, remember Michael Wuertz? Quietly, he's had the best spring on the staff, throwing nine innings, allowing five hits and no runs, with no walks and 13 strikeouts. Lou, for his part, spent some down time "using some of the casino services:

Were the services kind to him? "The casino services were cooperative," replied Piniella, who likes to play the ponies at the sports book.

Ryan Dempster starts today against Seattle's Jarrod Washburn. The Cubs will be the "away" team today and bat first. As last night, there's radio in Chicago (WGN) and Seattle (KOMO), TV on WGN-TV and also MLB Audio and MLB.TV via MLB.com Mediacenter.

Lilly never established his curve last night

and it was obvious he was just getting his pitches in and threw primarily fastball and change, wwith a couple cutters. No harm.

Marquis on the other hand, couldn't keep any of his pitches down which is bad and bad.

Therioot sucked dubiously Hart was very impressive.

So what is exactly the rotation?

Zambrano, Lilly, Dempster, Hill, and Marquis?

unfortunately

yes.

I actually

talked my wife into watching the game last night. For us it was a 10:20p start here in MI. Jeez....Lilly, Marquis, TheRiot (who I love, but gack!) really made me fear for the year. It's only one exhibition game, I know. But it was only the second or third game I've seen so far this year, in its entirety. I hope to not see too many more like it.

They

played that game like they were in a hurry to get to the blackjack tables. Lilly threw mostly fast balls and the hitters were swinging early in the count.

Fukudome did looked embarassed.

I wanna see this pic, but...

I don't think a search for "fukudome" and "showgirl" would turn up anything safe for viewing here at work.

I hate that apartments at school

don't get WGN. The dorms do, but for some reason, apartments do not. I wish I was a freshman again.

Let's hope

this afternoon is better than last evening was for them. Yuck!!

Ouch!

That game hurt last night ... and Marquis was being--once again--himself all over the place. Nice homer by Soriano; bonehead play from Cedeno; Lilly wasn't doing himself any favours, either.

Hope the Cubbies can pull their collective crap together and fashion a well deserved blue "W" today.

LRRF

And BTW ...

Trading Murton? Before tomorrow? What is Sue going to do? Yikes!

That might need a new name that would be worse than

Cedeno on her scale!

Actually I hope

he does get traded to a team that will use him. He deserves to play.

In Vegas yesterday.

Twelve runs scored in a short 2 hour, 7 minute game? Something wasn't right here last night.

Cub fans, as expected, outnumbered Seattle fans 4-5 to 1, maybe more. On the park itself, since there is only a small, outfield grass area, the small fans ran wild in the reserved seats, with lots of restroom breaks. The concession lines were outragous. The lines for condiments was longer than the bathroom lines. Guess they don't get many sold-out games here.
And as you may have heard before, after the game, the cabs can't come quick enough. Visitors here don't have rental cars, so there are thousands looking for cabs at the same time. You might want to do this once, then book your trip next year to mesa.
Of course, we'll be there again today. Hopefully the cubs can get their hitting on the right track!

Alfonso, Derrek, Aramis, Kosuke and friends...

FWIW...

... the guy in the middle is Oscar Goodman, the mayor of Las Vegas.

You were looking right in the center of the photo, right?

thanks!

Kosuke does look a little... uncomfortable.

I think

the one in the green is taking Andro. Nice to see they had one in Cubbie Blue!

maybe he's uncomfortable because he's holding his bat on the wrong shoulder...

Ok, I'm officially worried about Soriano...

Aramis and Dome both have their bats in the proper upright position, given their, ahem, 'surroundings', yet Soriano's bat is just hanging there. And he's next to the one in Cubbie blue!

Anyone in Vegas..

Let the players know their cars are safely in the players lot at Wrigley. Two transports arrived yesterday and unloaded their cars. Still TONS of work being done to get ready for Monday.

What a mess last night.

At least it was fun for the fans in attendance. I'd rather see a HRfest than a pitching duel. Thats just me though.
The title here says it all.

Fantasy lineup..

any suggestions?

C McCann
1B Garko
2B Pedoria
SS. Tulo
3B Aramis
LF Soriano
CF C. Young
RF A. Rios
OF Hawpe
UT J. Upton
Bench Felix Pie

Rotation

Peavy
Sabathia
Rich Hill
Wainwright
Jared Weaver
Phil Hughes
Joba Chamberlain
Carlos Marmol
D-Train

and Brad Lidge on the DL

I'm trying to trade for D-Lee .. for Joey Votto, Garko, and Lidge. Any suggestions?

if possible

I think I'd drop Marmol for Wood at the moment, for Wood will get you more points with saves. Rotation is great and if you could do that trade I would

48 hours and counting...

you

going inside Monday?

Depends on which way the wind is blowing

If that predicted 10-15 mph wind is out of the Southeast, I might be looking up at the back of Al's head the whole game. But if it's out of the Northeast, I'll probably go inside and look at the back of Braun's big head half the game. Assuming of course, I can score a bleacher.

I cant guarantee

but as of right now we have a 4th bleacher ticket. I dotn want to get your hopes up. But if you see the #9 Hobbs jersey outside the stadium Monday come up and ask if we still have it.

Fair enough. That's the beauty of ballhawking...

If I don't go in, I'm just as happy hanging out on the corner. Sometimes happier.

Yeah...

I just put up on CL a "want one bleacher for face only" ad. we'll see what happens. Look forward to seeing you either way.

Waiting for the

game to start on WGN and just caught the "Twist & Shout" scene from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I love that scene.

Just

caught the end of Soul Train haha

wow, soriano's batting 5th today!

and Johnson batting lead off!

Johnson leading off against LH pitching is a good thing.

Full lineups

Cubs
Johnson, cf
Fukudome, rf
Lee, 1b
Ramirez, 3b
Soriano, lf
DeRosa, 2b
Soto, dh
Blanco, c
Cedeno, ss

Dempster, p

Mariners
Suzuki, cf
Lopez, 2b
Ibanez, lf
Sexson, 1b
Beltre, 3b
Wilkerson, rf
Vidro, dh
Johjima, c
Betancourt,ss

Washburn, p

well

I just pray that we DON'T see that lineup ever again

As do I

The second Magnum P.I. is over I'm switching to the game.

Why?

I think it isn't bad.

Becuase

if Johnson is leading off that means Pie didnt work out

...or it just means we are facing a left-handed pitcher.

Then

put Dome in center and Murt...........oh, wait.

We been though this that was never going to happen, Fukudome doesn't want to play CF that much.

It

was a Murton joke. Sorry.
And I'm sure he'd play a game or 2 there if asked....wouldnt he?

Yeah

he would play a game or two here and there, but not over a fullseason every week. That would mean some weeks he might be starting 3-4 times in CF and Murton in RF. Thats why the Cubs had to go out and get somebody.

Murton

is long gone.

Murton

I'm a big fan as well I just hope we get somebody with good potential in return. I'll be rooting for Murton on another team, as long he doesn't hurt the Cubs.

Pie

isn't going to play against alot of LH pitchers. Reed Johnson has a career 370 OBP against LH pitchers, and a 380 and 422 OBP against LH pitchers the last two years. It's very very very smart have him leadoff against LH pitchers. The top 6 in the line-up is really good, I wish Fukudome was second and Soriano was 5th against all pitchers.

Whatever works for the win.

Why

Hows the line-up bad? I like it alot better then our opening day line-up we got a bunch of OBP at the top and our three best hitters in the middle.

ok ok ok

against a LHP this lineup is stout

But I'd

rather see Dome and Soriano flip-flopped until Dome gets a little more consistant at the plate

nevermind, lol

my opinions are 97% wrong.

And The Other 3%...

...may not be right?

the other 3%

is when i'm drunk and cant remember what I said. I give myself the benifit in that case.

MLB.TV woe

Looks like they no longer offer the old mediaplayer. The new one, as previously established, is no good. Lots of buffering and jerky pictures. If it aint broke.....arrgghhh

Oh

and the "full screen" only fills up half my screen.

thats pretty lame

You're right.

Just checked it myself. It's not terrible, but the old player was better.

FYI, the MLB.TV feed is about 30 seconds behind live TV in Chicago.

And

27 behind Directv

in that case, I predict Reed Johnson is going to lead off with a homer

I actually saw it before anyone posted it

maybe I logged in before the put in a delay

maybe i'm not 27 seconds slow.

I posted GONE and I was late at doing it.

Yeah

on the old player you could reduce the buffer to 0 seconds, but it would still eventually fall behind.

Oh, it's bad

the jerky pictures are bringing memories of the 2003/2004 level of service back to me.

Thats why

Reed Johnson is leading off lol JK

HA!

I gotta take the Hobbs off the back of my #9 jersey now.

Good move

For awhile there, I was worried you were going to put a 1 in front of the 9 and change the H to an S.

I guess we can remove the restraints now... ;-)

ok i just got the SOBBS joke. Nice one haha

I liked it better when you

called him "MOW"...

that wont last. Murton is on the move.

Nice shot

Reed

haha I loved Bob's comment

"who does he think he is, Soriano?"

I liked Bob's other comment...

... about why Dome should be batting 2nd.

Rats!

I was thinking more like

Crap!

Reed Johnson

kinda reminds me of Aaron Rowand and Eric Byrnes, but without the few big power season those guys had. But in most years those guys hit 10-13 HR with 270-280 average and 330-340 OBP.

Ichiro

talk about a man with OCD or superstition, Ichiro goes through the same exact process before every AB

Ichiro and Nomar add 12 minutes to each game.

Longest. Half-inning. Ever.

Trachsel on the mound facing Ichiro, Nomar, and Hargrove.

You could build a house in that time

So ballhawk

your name isn't Ken is it?

my name isn't a lot of things...

...but Ken isn't one of them. There - chew on that double negative for awhile...

ha

I just got done reading about the ballhawks in Wrigley Season Ticket 2008. The article was writen by Ken. Thats why I asked.

just wondered

if it was you who got covered in doggie-doo-doo for a Barrett HR ball hahaha

that would be me

and that was a home run ball definitely worthy of a 'poop' call by Sue Actually it should be 'poop!!!' since it was a Cub homer.

Ramirez

is quite nimble for a big guy

Later

everyone. I have do get some things done before the BCB fantasy draft at 6. It'll be over just in time to watch the HRfest in LA.

Anyone know...

... how tall those OF walls are? They look like they're 40 feet high.

Well, according to the

Las Vegas 51s official team site, they're only 20 feet high.

Stadium Dimension: LF 328, LC 364, CF 433, RC 364, RF 328 (20' fence)

I agree though, they seem closer to 40. I guess everything looks bigger in Vegas.

well surely

this guy isn't optimistic

So,

Has anybody heard where murton would be traded to?

I don't think

anything has been said about who is interested in him.

In that case,

I would not be surprised

they hang onto him.

So far,

so good with Sori in the 5 hole.

I defy anyone to

explain to to me what, exactly is funny about Carlos Mencia...besides all the jokes he stole from other comedians...and he even butchered those.

There is absolutely nothing funny about Carlos Mencia

Nothing

He is a joke thief and a liar. Dont believe me? Google 'Joe Rogan vs Mencia' Rogan goes right up on stage and calls him out in front of his own crowd for stealing jokes haha BUSTED

Google

"Mencia Bill Cosby" and watch the routine he stole word-for-word form Cosby.

woo hoo 2-1 Cubs

Can't believe Ichiro dropped that ball

Don't see that everyday

Seattle's defense is really horrid

this inning.

Cedeno!

In A Good Way...

I was just

going to say that. :-)

yes

no poop!

Maybe we should

use Cedeno! with one exclamation point as the bad one and Cedeno!!! with two or more exclamation points as the good one.

Nice piece of hitting

by Ronny there...

I wonder if there is a way to learn "baseball smarts"?

If Cedeno learns how to think a little on the baseball field, he'd be a very good SS.

I think

he should not try to do too much, just stay within your level.

I hope so.

Seems like it's more a matter of focus than intellect with Ronny. He just doesn't keep his head in the game.

Kosuke really has trouble

with cutters. Hideki Matsui had the same problem when he came over; he actually said no one in Japan throws a cut fastball, so it's a pitch they just have to get used to. Hopefully Dome adjusts as well as Hideki has.

I think he will.

IIRC Ichiro struggled at first, too.

Me, too.

It just sucks watching him struggle with those pitches.

Jeez

How much are these guys getting paid to shill for Vegas?

THAT

is one helluva throw by Derosa.

Yeah, no kidding

He who questions whether DeRo has enough arm for SS

just received his answer.

Not sure I've ever questioned that,

but, okay. I do know I'd rather have him at SS than Theriot.

That wasn't targeted at you, GV,

but at a generic "he". During all the talk about TNO this winter, most of the people who said that DeRo couldn't play SS cited his "weak arm". Hopefully, those same people were watching today. He might lack a step of range, but he's got plenty of arm for SS, that play being exhibit A.

DeRo!

Brian who?

Sparkling play

by Fontenot there. Why is he still on this team whilst Eric Patterson languishes in minor league camp?

Seriously.

Here's a comparison of their ST performances. Fonty's out-slugged E-Patt, but that's about it. E-Pat's faster, IMO better on defense, and is a more flexible player on defense.

PECOTA

PECOTA projects them to be about equal at the plate, but agrees that Patterson is a better defender.

The point about his versatility is taken. If he can play a credible CF, for example, that could make Johnson essentially redundant.

Yeah.

I don't see why E-Patt isn't up here. Plus, he offers speed, making him useful as a late-inning picnh runner, as well. Perhaps Johnson will fill that role...

Not to put too fine a point on it,

but Fontenot offers nothing that E-Patt doesn't, while Patterson offers everything Fontenot does, plus the added components of speed and versatility.

LOL

Boooood Lite!

Ahhhhh, I must be drunk.

Oh boy, the irony

Advertising MLB.tv on a Cubs broadcast, when the vast majority of Cubs fans can't use it to watch games live.

Cedeno!!!

That's it Ronny...

call time out -- quick!

What kind of pitch is he throwing?

It looks like a snowcone coming out of his hand.

Earth Hour: Turn off your lights 8-9pm Tonight

Just thought I would get a plug in for Earth Hour tonight.

http://www6.earthhourus.org/

The city of Chicago is participating as well as many major cities across the world. So just take one hour and shut off your lights from 8-9pm. Light a candle. Play a guitar. Read "Wrigley Season Ticket." Talk to your family! Whatever!

Fine by me

I have a date with Danica Patrick tonight on ESPN2. She might like the lights off.

oof.

Short leash for Marshall.

Blanco!

Heads up play by Hank White!

boy

hes having a great defensive day

Who is this guy pitching that threw five straight strikes?

I'm sure Lou has pencilled him in as a starter...am I right ? :-)

Nope.

The Son of Red Baron (Dempster) has that slot...

Paging Mr. Marshall,

Your tickek to Des Moines is ready for you.

Your

ticket to Des Moines is waiting for you at ticket counter #3.

you know what?

this kid hoffpauir is a pretty good hitter.

He's 28 years old

Not exactly a kid. =)

Hoffpauir

can hit, but he might have trouble besting Paul Konerko in a footrace.

Hoffpauir!

Trade him ASAP! He's doing awesome!

Let's trade these minor leaguers HoffPOWER and Murton

to Cincy for that veteran CF Dusty likes, whats-his-name, Corey Patterson?

Odd motion by Bautista.

It's like he's aiming the ball, not throwing it. Looks like he's playing darts.

who got cut?

i missed who len and bob were talking about

i think it was woody williams

Houston's rotation is now:
Roy Oswalt
Brandon Backe
Wandy Rodriguez
Shawn Chacon
Chris Sampson.

Ouch.

Man.

That's 10 gallons of bad in a 5 gallon sack.

I Thought they were just tallking in general...

that sending a guy who's been in the majors for a while back to the minors.

Good job Ronny

Now do all that in the regular season.

Nice throw by Burke.

Can't blame Ronny for that one.

Was it? I didn't see the throw

and just assumed Ronny pulled another one.

It was a good throw.

Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you. Of course, since it's Ronny Cedeno everyone will piss and moan, ignoring that fact that ultra-SS Ryan Theriot led the league in baserunning outs last season.

Ryan Theriot led the league in baserunning outs last season.

I did not realize that. But hey, Ryan's *scrappy*. Fontenot, too ;-)

He made 5.

But so did Derrek Lee. Cedeno deserves his share of critcism, but not today, and not for that play.

Upon reflection,

I agree.

Ronny Cedeno is not particularly good at baseball

Tuned in late and that's the first play I see.

Didn't realize getting thrown out on a great throw...

was evidence of being not particularly good at baseball.

He got thrown out on a great play by the defense. Tough break. He's actually having a great day though.

Snark not necessary

I saw the play, I was just making fun of Ronny.

Your comment was way off base...

that's why I was snarky. He's having a good game. His play wasn't a bad one.

Again, I was making fun of him

My comment wasn't supposed to be "on base".

Why make fun of him?

He's having a really solid game, at a time when it's important for him to have a solid game. It's just unnecessary.

Like I said in my first post, varsho

I just tuned in. I didn't know he was having a good day. I just saw him getting thrown out (on a good throw) and mae fun of him, tis' all.

Man, I better get out of this thread...

LOL

I hear ya. I think Ronny can handle it.

Hence we corrected you...

I apologize for being snarky, but if you can't admit when you're wrong, come on.

We're making way to much out of this

As for me admitting when I'm wrong, what part of "Ronny Cedeno is not particularly good at baseball" is wrong?

So why make fun of him?

Other than maybe to be mean?

It was a joke! Call it lame if you want, it probably was. But there was nothing mean spirited about it.

I said "Felix Pie is not a good player" after he grounded out in his fourth AB after getting a couple of doubles, would that make any sense?

Well, I would probably realize that you were joking. If not, I would point out that all the evidence we have points to Felix Pie being a good baseball player.

We're making way to much out of this

I agree.

So why make fun of him?

Other than maybe to be mean? That's the only reason of which I can think. It wasn't funny or clever, and it wasn't well placed.

If I said "Felix Pie is not a good player" after he grounded out in his fourth AB after getting a couple of doubles, would that make any sense?

It was a good throw.

That's how baseball works. Not Cedeno's fault, unless he has contorl over the laws of physics and failed in his duties to affect the trajectory of that baseball.

and it was a pitch out so he had no chance and still almost got in

Speaking of pitchouts,

does Lou not believe in them? It seems the Cubs pitched out a lot more under Baker than under Pinella. No judgments cast, just a question.

Flithy, filthy out pitch

by Piggy there. He's really making a case to be on this team.

It would seem crazy for him not to be

I think so, too.

But I fear we're going to see Marshall until Eyre is healthy, then Marshall will go down to the minors to get some starts in.

Decision made

I think it's clear after today's side-by-side comparison between Piggy and Marshall, that Piggy will get the nod to start the year.

From your lips

to Lou's ears.

Hendry wants to do Murton right

Wow

Lou's got some thinking to do, IMO. Micah and Matt are hitting the cover off.

Not really,

unless you'd think they're better than the players already at thier positions (Lee and Soriano, respectively)

Yeah, I know.

It's just wish we had a place to put their bats.

Yeah.

They've both had solid springs.

Decisions have been made...

Hoffpauir and Murton will be in AAA or traded. There's just not a spot fo either of them on this team, unfortunately.

The Big Murt

laces one to center.

Woodie warming up

Nice hitting

by Fonty there, and by the team in general today.

Yeah they look much better than yesterday

Yeah.

Great approach today, all around. Lots of fastballs thrown, though. Probably has something to do with it.

Here comes Wood.

Knock 'em the creek, Kerry!

It seems Wood needs a closer's nickname

Kid K

A little dated, perhaps.

After that peformance

"Cardiac Kid" wouldn't be too far off base.

Did the gun

just register 101 MPH? Holy hell.

Thy say it's off, but it's fast

BB made a comment

about the gun being "a little hot" today. Regardless this is good stuff

Actually

Bob and Len said the radar gun on the stadium scoreboard was a little hotter than the WGN one -- the scoreboard registered 99 on one that registered 98 on the TV.

This hitter is so overmatched,

it's not even funny.

Come on, Kerry.

Get back in there.

Dang-it Wood!

I got $10 on this game! Get it together!

Nice DP, Wood Barehanded it

Wah-wah-wee-wah.

GREAT play by Kerry.

Wood is looking good

no matter the hit and the walk.

They're chanting Kerry

He K's him to end it!

PWNED!!!!!!!!!!!

That guy had no chance. Great job by Kerry.

Besides yesterday

the Cubs lookd great the last 6 games or so. Great way to end ST

And in all fairness

Cedeno looked pretty good the past few games. Getting tossed out stealing happens. I we're gonna have him we might as well have him playing well.

Agreed.

Don't spend that $10.00 all in one place now.

I'll be spening it

at Wrigley on Monday. And it was really $10.50. Cubs were the underdog.

bet 10.00 to win 10.50 (paid 20.5) Result: Wager Won

Cubs(Chicago) xxxxxx 4
Mariners(Seattle) xxxxxx 2 03/29/08(15:05 ET)
Cubs(Chicago) +105

I can only wish.

I'll be at the office where they just outlawed personal use of the Internet.

Have Fun!!

Bummer

did they outlaw radios?

Hmmm.

Good idea. I haven't listened to a ballgame on the radio since I was a kid. Do they still sell those things?

You can get a portable XM radio and listen to ALL the games.

I'm assuming you cant go to mlb.com with the new interweb rules at the office. But if you can do that but a Cubs Club membership and you get all the Cubs games on mlb.com audio for $19.95

Cubs Win!

They're coming home

Soon they will be on a plane to Chicago coming home to start the season that will hopefully be THE season.

Last night

Last night I was at the Rush game (GREAT EXPERIENCE DEFINITelY RECOMMEND IT).

What I gather is Lily wasn't as bad as the numbers look right?

if you like the Rush

you'll LOVE the Chicago Slaughter haha Sears Centre. No nets. Every ball goes in the stands on kicks. (and you get to keep them) I love seeing 45 year old dads falling down and fighting kids to get a ball hahaha

Rush

Rush plays in my backyard just about. The Slaughter is harder to go to. Wolves and Rush both recommended very highly esp. for a young family.

I agree

The Wolves are great.

With young kids

If you have a young family the Wolves are a great bargain. We go about 5-7 times a year.

My kids love the Wolves and loved the Rush last night (first game we ever went to),

I've only been to 1 Rush game. I loved it. The Slaughter is a bunch of college kids running around crazy. It's bush league for sure.

if

the Rush are AAA then the Slaughter are below single A. Rookie league haha

picking up Kerry Wood in fantasy league

immediately!

Nice way to

end ST. I want to see them have a great season but after getting burned by the Bulls this season I'll take it one game at a time.

It was nice to see Kerry

close out the game and collecting the last out and have the fans cheering him on for that last out. He's gonna perfect for this job. When the Wrigley fans do it for real and are going bonkers for that last out, his addrenaline will be pumping big time. I wouldn't want to face him in that situation, ever.

It was great

hearing the fans yelling "Kerry, Kerry, Kerry".

Yes it was

I wonder if that will be a regular thing during the season as well? How cool would that be to have 40,000 fans chanting your name?

I can't get 1 person to chant my name and believe me I've tried.

I bet it will.

Kerry is so loved by the Cub faithful. It would be fun just to be in Wrigley to hear it.

Joe Morgan really does hat the Cubs and Cub fans

This guy needs to let it gooooo. Just now during the White Sox and Mets game on ESPN, they did a promo for the Cub game on ESPN2 Monday and then Joe mentioned the unveiling of the Ernie Banks statue and Joe said that Ernie had invited Joe and then Joe said "However, I will not be able to attend, because I have to work for a living."

It was the way he said that made it obvious it was a jab at Cub fans. He didn't say it with a chuckle but totally serious and deadpan and dripping with venom.

HATE GD IT!!!!!!

I really do dislike Morgan...

...but it's at least possible he was referencing the Lee Elia tirade.

It's possible

and even so, I still think that would be a jab at Cub fans. That's one of the biggest stigmas attatched to Cub fans from other team's fanbases. I've heard it on numerous occasions from DBack and other fans.

Either way he said it, it wasn't said in jest and wasn't good natured. He's just a dick.

I cant stand him...did he bring up his insult that he made..

..about Banks last year? During a Sunday Night Baseball telecast, a HR was hit into the basket....Banks name came up and he said "that's where alot of Ernie's HR's landed, that basket helped him hit those 500 HR's"

Of course Joe didnt know, remember or bother to check pre insult that the basket wasnt there during a majority of Ernie's carrer.

The basket was only there for the last year

of Ernie's career. Not hearing the comment but just reading it, it sounds like a jab at Ernie personally (the Elia angle would seem to be way to clever and subtle for Morgan, although not impossible). Maybe he's jealous of the success that Ernie apparently earned for himself after his baseball career ended. I seem to remember Ernie building a successful business.

It could also have been

completely innocent and literal. Maybe Joe Morgan actually has to work that day.

I believe it was intentional

Like I said, maybe you have to have actually heard the way he said it.

If it was innocent, he would've said something like, "I will not be able to attend because I'll be doing the such and such game on ESPN......" he didn't have to go there with the " I have to work for a living comment" a notorious label to Cub fans from rivals. It was premeditated and deliberate.

I'd let it go, but it's just another reason for me to dislike Joe Morgan.

Having said that

even though the reason why Cub fans loathe Joe Morgan is because of Joe Morgans own big mouth, if I was Joe Morgan and the way he get's torn up by Cub fans every time he steps foot in the beautiful City of Chicago, I wouldn't like Cub fans either.

I HAAAAATE Joe Morgan. I cant watch any game he does. He NEEVR talks about the game, He just talks about himself. He's the Tyra Banks of men. Anytime anything happens he turns it into a story of whe he played and the same thing happened to him.

For the Soto fans

Sports Nite is doing an interview with him on their 10 p.m. show tonight.

Olney

just predicted the Cubs to win the NL and said he thought that trade will still go through.

I saw that

and I personally hope he's right on both accounts but I think the odds are better for the former to happen than the latter.

Earth hour is upon us here in the Central time zone

I've got a pretty good view of the Chicago skyline from my rooftop deck, and it was kinda neat watching a lot of the buildings go 'dark'. First the Merchandise Mart, then the Sears Tower, followed by the Hancock buidling and the AON Center (aka Amoco/Standard Oil building). Finally, the AT&T building went dark but they were a few minutes late. Somehow that seems appropriate - maybe Harry was trying to make THEM look bad from beyond the grave...

A lot of the North side neighborhoods were pretty dark as well. About the only areas that looked bad were some of the tall buildings downtown still under construction - probably some safety issues there - and all the high-rises along the lakefront.

p.s. I'm typing this by candlelight. Now if only I can find some marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate bars...

Light out...

Danica on. (though a lap down)

I shut it all down, laptop included

Pretty nice to have a little peace and quiet for a while. But of course I head straight to BCB and plug back in!

Now turn on the

LA vs Bost game. 201ft down the left field line with a 60ft net from the foul pole to left center. And the backstop is about 10 feet from the back of the plate. WTF are they doing?

I did the math keystone

and you're on pace to pass Al in comments at around the All Star break.

I've often wondered - what is the sound of one blogger blogging?

Now I know... ;-)

and yes

sometimes I wait for an answer, realize no one is here, and answer myself. I'm easy to entertain.

Naw

to catch Al at the pace I'm at would take 349 days.

Would someone please

check their mlbtv feed and tell me if they are also getting sound, but no picture. thanks

I don't have MLB.TV

but the Gameday Audio feed wouldn't work at all. I think they have a new "version" of their Media Player. I "solved" the problem by bringing up yesterday's game (under the old system), then using the "Today" tab to bring up today's game. You might try to do that as a test.
