But it is in fact wildly innaccurate to say he’s anywhere but… well, actually he’s in Metaire, Louisiana right now. They’re playing the New Orleans Zephyrs.
thats what I’d have to testify to. I didnt see it live or antything. I just saw a reaply a few minutes ago and I shit you not….thats what it looked like to me.
You are using cliche logic, not thinking logic. Walking Dunn, not only keeps him from homering off you, but now the bottom of the Reds order has to drive him in. On a day when the wind is blowing out, and the over is 11, that is a good choice.
I think Geo gets more votes. Dome may have better numbers but voters are always weird about voting for players that aren’t really in their “first” professional season.
and it might be unfair or under researched. But to me so far Pie looks like the spoiled kid who gets to play becuase his dad is the coach. Therefore he doesnt look like he tries too hard. Johnson looks like the kid who wants to play in the MLB and he busts his ass every play. I like Reed….
Doesn’t care about “ceilings” or “potential”. The kid refuses to shorten up his swing and is trying to emulate Soriano. If you dont send him down you are telling him thats a good idea. Clearly the coaches arent able to get to him.
and I am not saying send him down tonight. But I am saying we are giving him at bats and we are seeing what we have at this point. And it is underwhelming to understate it. I realize I am just a fan, but from my perspective it doesnt even look like he is trying to adjust. It looks like he got by in AAA hitting mediocre fastballs, really, really well. And if you don’t do something, why should he stop? He is a big leaguer, probably partying his guts out. Send him down, let him stare at an Iowa cornfield for a few weeks and see if he will come back with more willingness to go for contact over power.
I’d take one of those Ichiro/Fukudome bailout running start swings over his loopy uppercut from his heels.
...with his defense he could be the best CF in baseball this season. And looking at how he’s had success in the minors, he is a hitter in the style of Soriano. Trying to turn him into an Eric Patterson type of hitter is foolish. That’s not his skillset.
...at his age. Power tends to bloom later, especially home run power. What you’re looking for out of a player Pie’s age is doubles and triples, which Pie is certainly capable of providing. As a player reaches 25-27, those doubles should start to blossom into home runs.
Look, it’s entirely possible that Pie doesn’t adjust to the league, or doesn’t fulfill his entire potential as a baseball player. But there is absolutely no way you can be certain of that where Pie is at in his development as a ballplayer.
If the Cubs were not ready to put Pie out there and find out if he can be a big-league ballplayer, then they should have gone out and gotten someone better than Reed Johnson.
The good news is, Pie’s defense is good enough to where he’s not an absolute 0 if you let him play through his struggles at the plate.
They’d try Johnson first. More likely, with Johnson getting time in CF, they’ll send down a pitcher, likely Marshall, and bring up Murton, should they have to DL Soriano.
On this blog, there was an ad that ran for a couple of weeks with a picture of a pro beach volleyball player (from behind). Some were aghast that such an ad would appear on a “family” blog. Others said “Woo-hoo!” (It wasn’t under Al’s control, anyway).
She came to be known as “naked butt girl” or simply nbg for short. If it wasn’t Misty May, at least her name was prominently featured in the ad.
She was on the US Olympic team in Colorado Springs for 2 years then left to play Pro indoor. SZhe was on the Chicago Thunder for 3 years before the league folded.
The Thunder was one of 6 indoor teams of the USPV. The were around in 1998-2002. They spent their sponsorship money too quickly and the league had to fold.
The left field seats emptied after the 3rd inning if I remember. Wond if you guys had anything to do with that? haha It was like a home game. I was loving it. We had student half price seats 4 rows behind home plate. They were selling the student half price seats right online. I mean….I was..a student…a few years ago. Half price is half price!
he plays with his injuries…..legs….and that the Cubbies want him to play….that means he doesn’t run hard on sure outs….Rami is the ONE Cub we do not want to lose….
So they want him to save his legs but when he sees that the ball isn’t going out he runs his ass off trying to get on base? Doesn’t seem to bother his legs when he does that. The guy loves to admire his shot plain and simple. He needs to just take off running and get on base. If the ball is caught it’s caught.
and has to then face Aaron Harang. As they said over at the Cub Reporter “Good luck with that” You have to give him some steady at bats. He has hit at every level including spring training
He is up to 200 major league at bats and has 50 Ks, and racked up a .211 average, a .265 OBP, and a .317 SLG. And is this swinging for the fences at least getting some dingers? No. Only 2 in 200 at bats.
Am I a loser for getting my play by play here because it’s about a minute faster than cbs.sportsline.com and I’m too cheap to buy mlb.com? Ed note: live in PA, can only get WGN when I’m driving west or north of my house….
The only problem is you see the reactions and you’re not always going to be able to figure out what happens for a minute or two.
The more convoluted the play, the less likely it’s going to be explained as well. I think most people just assume everyone is watching / listening. With that said, you can usually ask and get a few responses.
I actually follow college baseball through a blog run by a Gamecock website. It’s similar to following the Cubs on here. If I don’t suck for doing that, you don’t suck for doing this.
but I wonder why Lou doesn’t look at Fukudome and see Ichiro, in the sense that he’s going to be on the basepaths all the time and might be worth having bat before Soriano / Lee / Ramirez.
Even acknowledging the fact Lou will likely leave Fonzie in the 1-hole, we could at least bat him second before D-Lee and A-Ram (note – I also hate those nicknames).
Baker can do whatever he wants to – it only affects me to the extent that he affects the Cubs by what it is he does. So I care about his management of the Reds to the extent that the Reds are in contention, and I care about his in-game management whenever he plays the Cubs. That’s about it.
...I think he commented. Seems the beat writers are more interested in Lou’s opinion of the hop than in figuring out who Lou is going to play in left the rest of the series. And now they’re asking about Lee and DeRosa.
...if Soriano’s only going to be out three days. Especially since I have no idea who goes down if Murton gets called up without a corresponding DL move (Mike Fontenot, probably).
Soriano obviously isn’t hitting well(for some reason)and might be out for a little while. This might bring up Murton, which can hopefully boost his trade value, and give Soriano some time off; maybe his leg was bugging him this whole time, and it took a strain for him to get time off.
...this injury was going to happen at some point – I can’t think that his hop was the sole cause. So you really have to wonder about how the injury is going to heal going forward.
...weight on it, that is not a good sign. Calf muscles can be touchy because they are so packed together, especially if it’s a lower calf strain by his Achilles.
Depends on the grade tear, but I would bet you wont see him for at least a few weeks.
The Cubs are officially tied with the Brewers for the Wild Card spot. All they need to do now is win more games than them. Their future is in their hands.
....I’d brace myself, because if Soriano is out for a while, you wil be seeing some of that.
A buddy of mine told me Pie looked just horrible tonight. I guess one AB had him whiffing on 3 straight fastballs down the middle. That ain’t a good sign.
Dempster over Harang; DeRosa and DLee Harass Harang
Maybe Dempster actually is a good starting pitcher, he pitched well enough (though not that great) to get the victory over Harang. Winning is the bottom line.. It’s a shame all Dempster got was a no-decision last week in Pittsburgh, going 7 strong innings, when he pitched better than he did last night. I’m sorry I doubted you, Ryan. DeRosa showed his versatily by playing LF and hit a 2-run homer. DLee got three hits altogether including a 3-run HR off the Reds ace. It’s nice to have a guy like DeRosa, who can hit well and play 2B, 3B, and LF. DLee continues to amaze with his renewed power and slick glove. 8-5 is not bad through 13 games.
Derrek Lee!

I just saw the replay of the homer on Gameday and Lee looks hilarious bending down to “high” five Fontenot. Fontenot looks like he could be Lee’s kid.

Game plan on Dunn
Demps will not let Dunn pop one into the stratosphere that gets carried out on thejet stream.
californiachicagoan - April 15, 2008
But you can't bring the tying run to the plate if you don't have to.
Solo shots don’t win 2 run ball games.
Bildo1805 - April 15, 2008
Its only the 6th.
Plenty of time for a solo shot endingh up being the difference.
californiachicagoan - April 15, 2008
Which means plenty of time for more Cubs runs, too.
You can’t if and but things. Manage the moment when it comes to pitching.
Bildo1805 - April 15, 2008
Dumb
So you play the same whether it is the 1st or the 9th? Not in my book.
californiachicagoan - April 15, 2008
Again, agree to disagree.
But, what you’re saying is you’d pitch to a guy in the 1st, but pitch around him in the 9th? I’m talking a 2 run game here, not a 1 run game.
I think you probably have a more civilized dialogue in you than “dumb”.
Bildo1805 - April 15, 2008

Here is my take
and it might be unfair or under researched. But to me so far Pie looks like the spoiled kid who gets to play becuase his dad is the coach. Therefore he doesnt look like he tries too hard. Johnson looks like the kid who wants to play in the MLB and he busts his ass every play. I like Reed….

Reed is no kid. He’s peaked.
Bildo1805 - April 15, 2008

Bildo1805 - April 15, 2008

californiachicagoan - April 15, 2008
Just sayin...
He’s got major league defense. Let’s get that out of the way. In a position you want a lot of defense.
His bat…he kills it when he’s in AAA. He comes up here and doesn’t have a clue. What’s your prescription for that?
I think it’s a lot of at bats early in a season, to see what we really have.
Bildo1805 - April 15, 2008
I agree
and I am not saying send him down tonight. But I am saying we are giving him at bats and we are seeing what we have at this point. And it is underwhelming to understate it. californiachicagoan - April 15, 2008
He needs ML AB's period...nothing can be gained by a trip to AAA
...If were playing winning baseball, which we are, he should be playing period. End of discussion
JB 23 - April 15, 2008
I agree
crazymountain - April 16, 2008
We've done the back and forth thing.
It’s time for sustained playing time.
I agree, if he keeps this up, we should probably look elsewhere. But the 22 at bats he’s had this year is not enough to tell yet.
Bildo1805 - April 15, 2008
If Pie could hit like Soriano...
...with his defense he could be the best CF in baseball this season. And looking at how he’s had success in the minors, he is a hitter in the style of Soriano. Trying to turn him into an Eric Patterson type of hitter is foolish. That’s not his skillset.
cwyers - April 15, 2008
That's a good point, too.
There’s 3 positions on the field where you’d forfeit offense for defense.
Luckily, Pie plays one of them.
Bildo1805 - April 15, 2008
Does he really have
the power of Soriano, though? Pie strikes as more of a Carl Crawford type, maybe hitting for bit less average, but the same power and speed ceilings.
gary varsho - April 15, 2008
Soriano didn't have Soriano's power...
...at his age. Power tends to bloom later, especially home run power. What you’re looking for out of a player Pie’s age is doubles and triples, which Pie is certainly capable of providing. As a player reaches 25-27, those doubles should start to blossom into home runs.
cwyers - April 15, 2008
I see.
Let’s hope we see Pie’s power blossom.
gary varsho - April 15, 2008
Thats the question
Can he hit like Soriano, because if he cant he is Corey Patterson.
californiachicagoan - April 15, 2008
And the only way you can answer that question...
...is to let him play.
The good news is, Pie’s defense is good enough to where he’s not an absolute 0 if you let him play through his struggles at the plate.
cwyers - April 15, 2008
man, you are truly ignorant of the CF position....
a great CF does not have to have a great bat….CF is a defensive position….DID you see the catch he made running into the bricks?
crazymountain - April 16, 2008
Demp still in?
alrighty then
Chanman25 - April 15, 2008
Any chance we call Patterson up
and go with DeRo in LF. I would say no, since we already have glut of infielders and DeRo has played the position on an extremely limited performance.
DC Cubbie - April 15, 2008
Demp has had some good sacrafice bunts this year
fischisgod - April 15, 2008

That's hilarious.
Whether it’s true or not.

Len and Bob have mentioned it on multiple occasions.
I have no reason to think they’re lying about it.

I thought you were joking.
It’s still funny.
gary varsho - April 15, 2008

Cedeno for OF?
Any chance they try Ronny out there first?
jza48 - April 15, 2008
Not in left.
They’d try Johnson first. More likely, with Johnson getting time in CF, they’ll send down a pitcher, likely Marshall, and bring up Murton, should they have to DL Soriano.
gary varsho - April 15, 2008
If it's just a few days...
...you’re likely to see Fontenot/Cedeno platooning in the infield a bit, with DeRosa seeing time in the outfield.
cwyers - April 15, 2008
Yeah
that’s probably true, DeRo out there. I know they thought about Cedeno for CF but who knows.

LSA for Demp.
Solid outing, can’t expect more from the guy we had in the #4 spot.

Keystone80435 - April 15, 2008
Last year (or two years ago?)
If it wasn’t Misty May, at least her name was prominently featured in the ad.
cubzfan - April 15, 2008

has a monsterly huge bubble butt. I wonder if it was her. Could have been Walsh. Still have the pic? I know most of the VB butts on tour.

Keystone80435 - April 15, 2008

Bump Bailey - April 15, 2008
The Thunder was one of 6 indoor teams of the USPV. The were around in 1998-2002. They spent their sponsorship money too quickly and the league had to fold.
Beach is where its at though.
Keystone80435 - April 15, 2008

I went Saturday and Sunday then hit the Monday night football game. I was a wreck for the next 4 days. lots-a-beer
Keystone80435 - April 15, 2008
Haha
we had 8 guys for Saturday-Sunday in the seats right behind the left field foul pole.
Saturday we all wore white t-shirts with big, blue “W”s on them.
We were popular with the townsfolk.
And yes, lots-of-beer. Thank god for German towns like Cincinnati.
Bildo1805 - April 15, 2008
That Sunday
The left field seats emptied after the 3rd inning if I remember. Wond if you guys had anything to do with that? haha It was like a home game. I was loving it. We had student half price seats 4 rows behind home plate. They were selling the student half price seats right online. I mean….I was..a student…a few years ago. Half price is half price!

and he hustled to boot!!
JB 23 - April 15, 2008
The only time Rammy doesn't hustle is when he's told not to.
He’s been told the past few years, especially late in the year, to cool it on running everything out b/c of his leg injuries.
He looks svelte this year, how much weight did he lose?
Bildo1805 - April 15, 2008
Not sure
I’m buying that.
Reddevil - April 15, 2008
He wasn't running in Pittsburgh
When he hit the double he admired it for a bit before taking off
Chubby Hugs - April 15, 2008
Reading material
Ramirez sometimes has to go easy when his legs bother him and his critics have at times questioned his hustle.

Nothing could be further from the truth, says teammate Ryan Theriot.
“I knew he was hurting and he never said anything and he’s not going to say anything. He’s not somebody who’s going to make excuses,” Theriot said.
“He’s just not that type of person. ... He plays hurt and he plays with nicks.”

But he still needs to run instead of watching the deep flies… a lot of people do it, but it always drives me nuts
Chubby Hugs - April 15, 2008
You do not see that
he plays with his injuries…..legs….and that the Cubbies want him to play….that means he doesn’t run hard on sure outs….Rami is the ONE Cub we do not want to lose….
crazymountain - April 16, 2008
That's silly.

Unofficial BCB Poll Question
Am I a loser for getting my play by play here because it’s about a minute faster than cbs.sportsline.com and I’m too cheap to buy mlb.com? Ed note: live in PA, can only get WGN when I’m driving west or north of my house….
kentmeister - April 15, 2008
Not at all.
Carry on.
gary varsho - April 15, 2008
Yes
you are a loser… that’s why you fit in so nicely.

Peeps
My grandmother loves those things… I’m guessing that’s why I’m so F’d up
jza48 - April 15, 2008
I think it's fine......
If I don’t suck for doing that, you don’t suck for doing this.

with a Reed Johnson playing CF”
Certain BCB poster.
californiachicagoan - April 15, 2008
Yes, clearly we should judge him on two weeks of play...
...rather than using the entirety of Johnson’s career as a ballplayer in order to gauge his value.
cwyers - April 15, 2008
Who said that?
And, it’s a single. You’re quite the ledge jumper, aren’t you?
Reed’s been hot, hope he keeps it up in case Pie doesn’t work out in the next 2 months or so.
Bildo1805 - April 15, 2008
johnson is a decent backup OF, rather have him than Coco
bheidge - April 15, 2008
He's a fine backup.
But there’s a difference between a good backup and a good starter for an entire season.
cwyers - April 15, 2008
Hmm
I gotta go Coco on that one, if money isn’t considered…
jza48 - April 15, 2008

He could have another .319 / .390 / .479 type year again. Unlikely, but championship teams get career years from at least one or two guys

CubsBall2202 - April 15, 2008
Not to repeat a common refrain........
but I wonder why Lou doesn’t look at Fukudome and see Ichiro, in the sense that he’s going to be on the basepaths all the time and might be worth having bat before Soriano / Lee / Ramirez.
Even acknowledging the fact Lou will likely leave Fonzie in the 1-hole, we could at least bat him second before D-Lee and A-Ram (note – I also hate those nicknames).

You mean you don't like to hear
how tough the Chicago media is, how biased it was against Baker, and how he somehow – almost miraculously- came out stronger from it?
Baker needs to stop doing anything, for the rest of his life.
NittanyCub - April 15, 2008
I really don't give a crap either way.
Baker can do whatever he wants to – it only affects me to the extent that he affects the Cubs by what it is he does. So I care about his management of the Reds to the extent that the Reds are in contention, and I care about his in-game management whenever he plays the Cubs. That’s about it.

Sori having an MRI right now
Results late tonight or by tomorrow morning.
bluebythebook - April 15, 2008
"It'll be awhile..."
...I think he commented. Seems the beat writers are more interested in Lou’s opinion of the hop than in figuring out who Lou is going to play in left the rest of the series. And now they’re asking about Lee and DeRosa.

Think it's time for the Big Murt to come into action?
NittanyCub - April 15, 2008
No reason to go through all the effort...

I want one. I have a #9 Cub jersey. You all told me to wait on the Murton jersey cuz when he gets traded I can get one half price.
Keystone80435 - April 15, 2008
This might be a good thing for the Cubs.
Soriano obviously isn’t hitting well(for some reason)and might be out for a little while. This might bring up Murton, which can hopefully boost his trade value, and give Soriano some time off; maybe his leg was bugging him this whole time, and it took a strain for him to get time off.
Or, this just sucks.
My $0.02
NittanyCub - April 15, 2008

He looks up towards my direction, nods his head, and lips “F**k yeah” and goes back into the dugout. I thought it was awesome
NittanyCub - April 15, 2008
Fan-effing-tastic story!
Every time I hear someone say “F**k yeah” I always think of Team America. Every time.
bluebythebook - April 15, 2008
certainly a layman comment here..
..but I cant fathom that injury could be too serious…
at least that is what I am hoping. Its certainly concerning that he pulls leg muscles so easily..
JB 23 - April 15, 2008
I know
who is he, Sammy Sosa? Hopefully Soriano doesn’t cough weird and spontaneously combust.
NittanyCub - April 15, 2008
You have to figure that...
...this injury was going to happen at some point – I can’t think that his hop was the sole cause. So you really have to wonder about how the injury is going to heal going forward.
cwyers - April 15, 2008
It was that damn hop!
he hopped right into one of the new drainage holes. gezz
Keystone80435 - April 15, 2008

Thats what it looked like to me.
Keystone80435 - April 15, 2008
Did he walk off...
...with a severe limp, or just minor?
MPH73 - April 15, 2008
I heard
he needed to be carried off/helped off
Keystone80435 - April 15, 2008
The Riot helped him off the field.
n/t
bluebythebook - April 15, 2008
He used Ryan Theriot as a crutch.
cwyers - April 15, 2008
If he couldn't put any...
...weight on it, that is not a good sign. Calf muscles can be touchy because they are so packed together, especially if it’s a lower calf strain by his Achilles.
Depends on the grade tear, but I would bet you wont see him for at least a few weeks.
MPH73 - April 15, 2008
sounds like a repeat
of last year with him
Bluelou - April 15, 2008
its hard to admit, but yes.
JB 23 - April 15, 2008
The first of many for him I assume
Mariners pitcher Erik Bedard has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his left hip
bheidge - April 15, 2008
Bah, no way
I wanted the Cubs to trade for him so bad. Shows how much I know about general managing
NittanyCub - April 15, 2008
Murton won CSN's poll
of who should be playing left field if Sori is on the DL.
bluebythebook - April 15, 2008
I'm very afraid of...
...seeing a lineup with Theriot, Fontenot and Johnson in it in the near future.
cwyers - April 15, 2008
How come?
Bluelou - April 15, 2008
Um, because none of them are very good?
cwyers - April 15, 2008
Well, here's some good news
The Cubs are officially tied with the Brewers for the Wild Card spot. All they need to do now is win more games than them. Their future is in their hands.
NittanyCub - April 15, 2008
Well...
....I’d brace myself, because if Soriano is out for a while, you wil be seeing some of that.
A buddy of mine told me Pie looked just horrible tonight. I guess one AB had him whiffing on 3 straight fastballs down the middle. That ain’t a good sign.
MPH73 - April 15, 2008
Fonzie is starting....
to remind me of a former injury prone left fielder!!ring a bell?
goatstew - April 15, 2008
the other one didnt k as much
or have a gun #18???
fischisgod - April 15, 2008
FWIW Really impressed with Soto
tonight and recently.. The kid is going to be special
fischisgod - April 15, 2008
According to the Cubs website
Soriano is day-to-day. That’s probably pre-MRI though, so take it for what it’s worth.
berselius - April 15, 2008
Sorigono
Keystone80435 - April 15, 2008
There is no way...
...they can put a time frame on how long he may be out without the MRI results to determine the grade tear he has.
Best case is probably 7-10 days, but it could be several weeks for a more severe tear.
MPH73 - April 16, 2008
soriano : day to day
but aren’t we all?
mjk83 - April 16, 2008
I read earlier today Murton batting .400....
w/ no extra base hits
crazymountain - April 16, 2008
