If all is going well, I'm at the ballpark, and you're continuing the discussion of today's game here. Hope the Cubs are winning!

woohoo

first one

haha

anxiously waiting?

i missed the last 5 minutes...

what happened haha

No idea. I had an HP rep at my desk hocking toners

I have faith that the Cubs will come back.

My Mom told me that being a Cubs fan was a great test of faith.

haha, she also didn't tell you...

you are headed for many heart attacks before age 40

and your prediction on Soriano's next ab?

I'm going to be bold and say he reaches base.

you take?

lol yes...I will take.

And hope I lose...

She didn't tell me about the heart attacks,

but she did tell me that it was great going to a WS game (in 1938), and she was sure I would get the same chance some day.

Or a test

of your degree of masochism

Prince gets hit

in his gut. Get up, this isn't soccer

This score

is faaaar from what the final will be. need at least 5 runs to win

Over floooooooooooow

Much faster. thanks

2 out, Kendall on 2nd correct?

Watch this now...

...the Brewers are going to retaliate.

Fielder HBP

Now why doesn't that happen more often?

Prince Fielder HBP

I think he just stuck his belly out

Get Up

This isn't soccer.

Lilly's day is over...after hitting Fielder

In his defense, that's a HUGE target

Fielder told the training staff

to bring him a blooming onion

Only down 2

I'll take that right now. We need to get Suppan out of the game

FWIW, According to Cory Provis...

Lou said Z was going to be pulled after the (I forget, so insert #) inning anyways.

Double switch: Fontenot in for DeRo... Hart on the hill

Did Piniella just do a double switch

in the 5th inning? What is he smoking?

he was on the phone with Dusty

I dont care about the double switch...

but why take out DeRosa... he's the only one on our team besides Lee and Dome who's had good ABs

I don't get it either.

Unless maybe it's a "speed" thing? Perhaps Lou is finally going to start having guys run on Kendall?

that dude can hit

n/t

terrible

3 out already after tommorrow

DISGUSTING!!!!

This game's over

Then shut off the TV or radio or Internet

And step away slowly.

New for 2008: Games are only five innings long.

Yikes. Pick a new team!

Yep, this thread does seem faster.

The other one was functional, and better than Opending Day, but still slowing my computer significantly.

the other thread

i was having a one second keystroke delay. didnt knwo if it was my computer or what but this is faster

all we need is santoswoodenlegs

to add a few photos.

(jk, btw)

Ahh we suck again..

I give up.

Kidding, but this is like last year all over again.

Braun rbi single

I wish we had a prospect that hit like Braun and Fielder.

that'd be nice

Hi...I'm not a prospect...

but you may know me from my ST ABs....

Mr. Hoffpaiur

I was gonna say the same thing but didnt want to attempt the spelling

"Hi, I'm Micah Hoffpauir. You may know me from such games as ... Spring Training! And...Des Moines!"

"Hi, I'm Troy McClure. He stole my line!"

It's only the 5th

It's early, keeping the faith here....

So how long

is it going to take Lou to start making changes?

Besides the double switch he just made?

Lou forgot that it isn't ST anymore.

Um...I like the dramatic as much as the next guy...

but it's time to stop playing grab-ass and start pitching and hitting.

for sure. cant score if you dont get on base. get these bats going

Weird, that's EXACTLY what my Little League coach used to say!

Then again, I think he meant grab-ass literally...

I've kept the faith for

35 years...unfortunately faith starts to wear off after awhile

Double Switch?

Fontenot for DeRo? Hart for Lilly?

Good, he looked terrible on that double, let's get him outta there.

Good omen

I'm sitting in my office reading the latest posts and in comes my boss with a secretary with my paycheck. It's gotta be a good omen so lets see what happens now!

what happened to

Liebr...thought he was warming up?

Lilly has looked like garbage and I am concerned

that last year was a bit of a fluke.

specially if Hill stays wild......

Well Well Well....

Hopefully this tempers all of our excitment for this season. I am just slowly waiting to see who gets blamed frist seeing that all of our scapegoats are now gone.

Let's blame HIGGY!

What I don't get is how we go through

an entire spring training without realizing that 1)theriot's not a lead-off man 2)Soriano isn't a #2 hitter (brutal) and 3)Pie is basically an autmatic out

Don't forget that...

we're playing the brewers...one of the best hitting teams in all of baseball.

Pie...

...is getting himself out, swung at a terrible pitch.

Pie

is the same guy he was last year

Are you saying ...

he is who we though he was?

This is why...

i dont know why Al and MANY fans here have supported Pie. Pie has absolutely zero plate discipline. It is a huge problem.

Fire Lou...

Put in Trammell.

/that's all I've got

I second that.

I'd rather have our booth announcer if you really do fire Lou

I third that.

Yes I know that doesn't make sense, but neither does Lou as our manager. BB and Trammell would be much better options in my opinion. They should have "Able to Formulate a Cohesive sentence in less than a minute" on their manager applications (yes b/c there are manager apps). Ok, That's my rant for the day. GO Cubs.

Gotta be kidding.

Think Pie

is averaging 2.1 pitches per AB...

Gabe Kapler is on the Brewers?

Wasn't he on the juice?

i dont know

but he was so damn cut he could barely swing a bat

Pie should NOT be starting

Dude, it's the second game of the season.

and he STILL has not...

improved his discipline!

OH boy... here we go again!

n/t

Relax...

It's only the 2nd game

Okay, so at

what point is it okay to start noticing how bad this team is?

Can ya check back in about a month or so?

when there's a larger number of games to observe

Baseball is not football, or even basketball...

The all-star break

... I'm kidding. Lou can make adjustments. We saw it last year. Give it time. I will now stop typing in broken sentences...

this team

looks absolutely PATHETIC and DISGUSTING!

nice start boys

At this rate

You're going to be a basket case by May 1.

Theriot safe.... on with a single

OK Bartlett

here we go...

?????????

Bartlett Bob and I have a friendly wager on...

this AB

C'mon Fonzy

Make it a 1-run game

I disagree with the Pie naysayers

Pie IS a good hitter. But he has to grow up and get over the crowd, his nervousness, and ignore the pressure.

Agreed

he will come around with regular ABs. Other bats need to wake up soon.

Theriot

Seems to have woken up.

Soriano and Ramirez.... not so much

What are you basing that on?

he's never shown he can hit on a major league level

He's played in what...80-something games in the Majors

And in most of his other stops he's completely cremated the ball offensively

I don't know

maybe his .350 BA in ST this year. The kid can hit, he needs to have consistency

I would disagree with the naysayers,

but his swing is too ugly for words.

Lilly

Why did we take him out so early - was is just the men on first and second?

We're saving him for game 4

of a series in October.

Lou envisioned...

...Braun putting one off the apartment buildings accross the street.

Soriano off to a good start...

Dan

you dont look like a pirate

Thats Ron Zook in college

Arrrrgghhhh

Looks like a porn star

haha

Now you do...

BWAAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH

Beautiful

amazing artistic abilities....ha

Now the season is officially on

SWL's got his photos out ...

Is that MS Paint? Brilliant!

Yes...It's better than photoshop.

Oh by leaps and bounds.

He did make contact...

so...yeah...improvement.

Detroit Tigers Shut Out

Didn't think that was possible

Clearly, the Tigers are PATHETIC and DISGUSTING!!!

And the Royals

are going to the World Series ...

If you bet that

and they did you'd have a large bag of new money

last week vegas had it at a 500-1...

... worth a $5 bet eh?

Yes, they RULE!!!!

Jacque Jones should NOT be starting!

Oh wait.

by the 2-0 Royals haha

I told Al at the game Monday "The Royals beating Detroit? Thats an upset." He said "Its only the 1st game."

Time for them to get a new 3b, because Cabrera clearly isn't ready...

HAAHAHAHAH

Pie for Cabrera?

Bartlett, We're all square...

name your bet.

Can Not Let Them Score Again

doesnt matter if they score

games over

nice to be 3 out already after tommorrow

Trolling?

I guess the White Sox aren't playing until tonight, so you all have nothing better to do in your doublewides while waiting for the unemployment check ...

Plenz

is a cub fan... apparently over-dramatic and negative... but i know he's a cub fan.

And the sky is falling

it is???!!!!

according to

a few on here.

Hart walks Hart

just imagine if he beaned him...

... Hart would break Hart.

A heart to heart

touching

Thats embarassing...

...when a guy steals third that easily, right after you try and pick him off.

Quoth Ron Santo, "Gee whiz! GOSH!!!"

Hart Steals second

WTF!

ay to hold runners on guys!

Hmmm

That is Soto right?

Nothing Soto Could Do

On either of those steals

So it was on Lilly?

I think Kendall and Soto...

...switched bodies before the game. I hate when players do that.

anyone.............

still happy the trade didn't get done?

sure would be nice to have a legit leadoff guy and drop others down a spot

the question

is will Hendry be willing to admit he was wrong to not get Roberst and up the ante?

Way too early...

...to think about that, but I don't see him waiting past sometime in May to decide if he needs to make them an offer they can't refuse.

Glad to see

the boys are ready for a "fast start" to the season...unlike last year.

Wow.

Ramirez to Lee, about threw it away again, 1 out, Hart at 3rd

ugh

whats up with the defense, seems like every throw nearly goes too wide from aram

my god does the calendar still say 2007

this is a carbon copy of the way we started last year, awful plate discipline, soriano looking more like a 136,000 dollar player, and with dempster pitching tomorrow who knows how many runs were going to have to score

Have faith my man

We made the playoffs last year

Now you know why BigJohn isn't pitching today...

with dempster pitching tomorrow who knows how many runs were going to have to score

geezzz. bet the over tomorrow huh

Get OUT

of this inning please

Hart's pretty good huh?

Nice Sig. I hope people take that advice.

n/t

Noticing your avatar for the first time....

If the moon were made of barbeque spare ribs, would you eat it?

Kendall walks

excellent a walk to kendall, this is tough to watch

Sanot cursing...

Kendall walk

I mean Santo cursing

"daaaaaaamn"

is it me or is weeks literally on top of the plate righ tnow

Right after I read that, I looked up and he fouled a ball off. His momentum carried him on top of the plate. So....yes. At least for me.

Now Hart's getting his slider over.

Lookin' pretty good. Not quite Marmol-esque though.

No one else is Marmolesque!

too fat of an 0-2 pitch

what the hell are we doing!

sucking...are you unfamiliar with it?

We are the Chicago Cubs.

We know nothing but unbridled, glorious success. Are you new?

Soto

double-pumped and heaved it into CF. Kendall stole 2nd.

He checked the runner at 3rd base, then hurried his throw to 2nd. Bad throw. Kendall lumbered into Fontenot and he was a little shaken up but appears to be fine.

Good Lord.

n/t

We look like

an expansion team

I was gonna go with little league.

But expansion works just as well.

false, expansion teams actually win championships (marlins, dbacks)

Which catcher is going to get run on all the time again?

I'm tellin' ya...instant karma is a bitch.

OK, I'll admit...

...that was pretty disgusting.

Stupid...

...move by Soto.

The Brewers were ready to play this series, they had something to prove. The Cubs have been like the walking dead except the juices are flowing with Fukudome.

ohhhhhhhhhh

my goddddd!!

\yes yes

PATHETIC DISGUSTING!!!

I can't wait for the AAA season to start...

... something to look forward to.

It already did.

You're looking at 'em.

lets not insult the iowa cubs here

Yeah, because

you do NOT want to make Les Walrond angry.

Hahaha...

Anyone see Lou's face there? Priceless.

Get Murton

behind the plate!

Look for...

...one of the Cubs to get plunked this inning.

that was

similar to an 8 year old little league play/decision

I was a little

worried going in that we were exepcting too much too soon from soto

IT'S TWO GAMES!!!! No one crushes it all season long. Cut 'em some slack!

Tell that to the Royals

We are more talented than the Royals.

"The Royals are not a good team." - Al (or something like that)

i know. i'm just messin

haha, I know. Still though...ouch. Poor KC.

Same here...

not to mention the fact that Kendall seems to know the Cubs hitters inside and out. If you notice, whenever he goes out to discuss something with Suppan, they are successful.

How ironic is it...

That we refuse to run on Kendall... yet he is running at will on us?

Ironic but also classically Cubs

Sounds like a Bach, Beethoven, Mozart compilation

to help carry you away from the depression of Cubs baseball.

It's like rayyyy....ah, forget it.

they are

finished!

does anyone know why derosa was taken out?

was it an injury?

Suppan...

...has been painting the outside corner with his breaking ball, and Lou wanted a lefty to face him. I do think it was a little early.

Didn't derosa double earlier though?

1 R on 2 BB, 3 SB, 1 E and No Hits

Great.

meh

0-2 isn't the worst thing....right??

2 games out of first.

Dempster is pitching tomorrow......

0-2?

Not if it becomes 0-162...

B/c that could never happen right? PLEASE someone tell me that won't happen!

wont happen

we play the cardinals

nope

could be worse, could be 0-3

No, I don't mind

that we've lost the first two games-it's HOW we're losing the games that has me very discouraged-it's one thing to lose but to lose and look this bad....

Well, Opening Day was a close game.

This one is getting a bit out of hand, I can't deny.

When did they

change the games to 6 innings? I thought they were still 9.

D-Lee

Sends Kapler to the warning track right in front of the 400 sign. Out.

didn't we see enough of this last year??

End of inning on K, thank god

After that woeful display of baseball...

I'm changing my avatar until further notice.

Why not the Cuban logo? he'll save us allllll

meh

I am really going to be mad if every game is like this: All batters suck except one (Fukudome last game, Lee this game)

Is Gabe Kaplar

the band-aid untli cameron can play?

against lefties, it seems.

Pat Hughes is killing me...

He made Lee and Ramirez's hits seem like they were long gone...

I know

I was all ready to type

Len casper did too

I guess they have to do something to manufacture excitement

No ne gives a damn about interviewing football players right now

Haha...

Ron is trying to act interested but he's soooo pissed about the game

I'm assuming im not the only one who feels were

going to go down with out a fight here

i could see it happening, but its really getting frustrating

You're not, sadly

If some of you keep this up, you'll never make it to Memorial Day.

It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Amen, brother.

I assume Not Bruce is a man, although it could be a Brucette. (Horrifying image. Don't touch that one, Santos)

I BEG YOU

Some things

are better left unseen.

haha. Still though, am I right to call you brother? I don't intend to offend.

Brother it is

Although there's nothing at all wrong with the sisters, either. :)

Not at all! Just wanted to be correct. : )

true, but once, just once can we look like a decent team in april and not have to rely

on catching up later in the season, how about we start looking like major league players who can hit

It's April 2

Come back to me April 30 and we can talk.

No...they've

cashed it in for today no doubt

Len

announcing the Yosh retirement news from kasey's fanpost.

Ramirez

Strokes a mighty pop fly in foul ground near 3rd base. 2 out.

I'm still waiting for Suppan...

to pitch like the "not very good pitcher".

Sort of like all

the pregame guys who kept talking about what a "stopper" Lily was

Nice A-ram

reaches out and golfs a foul pop up-why don't you just admit you've lost interest?

Fuk-man Do

Lets see something here....

Fookie

hit a comebacker to Suppan, who stabbed it nicely and threw to first for the ..... third out.

wtf.....

pretty sad we can't get to suppan!!!you would think he was bob gibson.unreal!!

okay, I

think I've reached my pain quotient for today

I'm getting pretty close.

and I'm stuck at work listening to the Brewers announcers!

Juuuuuuust a bit outside.

Is

it still bob eucker?

For the most part...

him and Jim Powell. They're usually OK, but it's driving me nuts. Talking about the crowd booing, Jim Powell was like, "Gee... I don't like to see Cubs fans unhappy." Wanted to jump through the radio and strangle the mo-fo.

Wait for it, guys.

Wait for the power of Greg Olsen's vocal chords to lift us to victory...

Ah, so that's the football player being interviewed.

7th Floor crew rendition??

n/t

hahahahaha oh no

at least we have one bear's fan

n/t

Nah, I'm just a fan of crowning artistic achievement in the field of music. : )

I'm just looking forward to lou's press conference

I'll save you the trouble.

Well, you know, uh, uh, well...I mean, yeah, gosh, it was, the kid Tim, Timmy Lilly, it's just, you know, um........any questions?

and dont forget....the "its early".....

Ah yes of course, my mistake! I prefer that to Dusty's "dudes" though.

What i want to

know is-how long will it take Lou to start making changes?

hopefully he'll make the right change and not start dempster tomorrow because I'm positive it will be a loss with him in there

It starts at the top.

Change him.

Good grief. You people kill me.

pretty stupid comment

that's like the 3rd time you've posed that question

relax.

I guess as long as...

we have more outs to make than we have runs to score we're still ok.

just go to the dugout boys and save yourselves the embarrasment

Watch out for Braun...

...launching one.

Watch out for Braun in general, 24/7.

ok what did I miss

or do I even want to know

just a bunch of nothing

crappy game..

Runners at 1st and 2nd, nobody out, Braun at the plate, Wuertz on the mound. I don't know how they reached, I'm working on something else.

If it gets closer I'll update more frequently.

what the eff

is wrong with our offense

Nothing...

it's the other team's pitching and defense that's the problem.

Everyone relax...

remember what Lou told us last year?

Ahhhh The Old Heater Story

that damn heater story

Wuertz pitching

2 base hits in a row, no outs

Wuertz pitches best...

...with guys on base. They've played right into his hands...

hahaha you got that one right!

Base hit

means they're loaded with nobody out.

The Brewers must not be very big fans of the 7th Floor Crew. Delay...delay....delay....

LOL, i think we're the only bears fans here.

n/t

Da Bearssss.

Polish sausage.

we need Da Coaaach...

he'll hit a grand slam with the bases empty.

It's the Ditka Bus

rounding second!

is that a mini Ditka bussss?

n/t

Ditka will hit a 5-run grand slam. As a warmup.

Why not.

With a hula-clad Michael Jordan on the dashboard.

well off to go do something that doesn't sicken me.

hopefully tomorrow we score at least 10 runs because we are going to need it like no other.

Sanot

"Geeeeewizzzzz"

Sanot = Santo in Keystonese

one pitch away

from being a complete blowout....

And that pitch is ... strike 3. 1 out.

I just hope that Chicago will have one good sports team this year

Bears...dreadful
Bulls....mediocre
Blackhawks....good but not playoff bound
White Sox....won't do crap
Fire...who cares?
Cubs...I dunno..

The Bears were not dreadful against the Packers. But I really don't want the Cubs to be the '07/'08 Bears, and the Cardinals be our version of the Packers....

those were some good games

but they were awful this season. They had a lead in almost every game (I think 15) and blew it.

The Bears actually never trailed by more than 7 heading into the 4th QTR last year

ya at least we can look forward to the hawks for years to come

In the Cubs pen

Carmen "Piggy" Pignatiello gets loose.

In the Brewers', Riske Business.

We better somehow win this homestand

Another K

2 out.

Put Gagne in

to finish game please

Hell, put him in now. He could use some work.

He might still

be looking for a belt.

I'm surprised he did not pass out on the mound monday, he looked incredibly uncomfortable

High fly to left

and Hoppy makes the catch.

Flyout... 3 outs

Yea

its like Wuertz pitches better with bases loaded

I'm tellin' ya...

....Wuertz gets lonely out there. He needs a crowd to have fun.

Fine with me

if not my heart.

I can agree with that...

he does seem like he's at his best when the bases are 'clogged'...

Hmm....

A stark departure from Greg's previous work. Interesting.

That could've gotten ugly...

So whaddya say... we make a run in these next 3 innings!?

Yes. A single run...

That's all we'll get

I predict... final = 7-2

LET'S GET SOME RUNS

phew!!!

Wuertz just trying to change the momentum.

on the plus side

the Cubs've only left 3 guys on base.

soto

is not helping me today in my fantasy league either..

CEDENO!!!

No, I mean he's batting...right now.

gaah

come on ronny...

CEDENO!!!

OK, that time I meant it.

Greg is boring.

ASK HIM ABOUT HIS RAP CAREER

He's moved

past that. Best to let it be.

Was only kidding, didn't really expect Len to ask him...

LOL

it wasn't a bad song... if you changed the words around a bit...

Soto Home Run!!!!!

SOTO

HOMERS!!!

Soto HR... with nobody on. 5-2

GEOVANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Soto...

HR...and yes...he pulled it.

Suppan is done

Way to GO GEO!!!

Come on baby...let's get some more!

Bullpen time...

Let's see if we can get to this bullpen now.

So we'll need...

4 more solo HRs to win this thing.....

Sori, Aramis, Dome, and Pie?

lets just get some guys on base!

and not strand them!

soto!!

that'll help me in my fantasy league!

Wow, me too!

Thanks for reminding me.

Noooo not that YMCA

We need a new song for pitching changes.

Help!
I need somebody
Help!
Not just anybody...

HAHA

Perfect.

I just don't think it helps Wrigley's

image as the "world's largest gay bar" when we blast the Village People every game.

Flip those caps

inside out, folks!

didnt torres pitch Monday?

Yes. if pitching is what you call it.

Dare I say it?

Same old team. 5 runs this year ALL off HR's. How a team with this many .290+ hitters can never seem to score any other way amazes me. Maybe the problem with this offense is Lee and Ramirez. I have no clue why we can't score runs.

weren't people complaining

about the LACK of homeruns in the first half last year?

Last year...

We couldn't hit HR's to save our lives in the first few months.

Yes.

And our catcher and 5 hole hitter have hit them already... I'd say that's progress.

Yes

If we hit 3 HR's a game that would be great just mix in a few with runners on please!

Um...it's the 2nd game of the season...

why don't you just say...

"5 runs in the last 72 hours ALL off HR's."

some people are

just never happy.

Wins make me happy

Solo HR's do not.

Yeah...

batters not making outs and scoring runs really depress me too. I Hate Asshole Solo HR Hitters. ASHH. hate em'

Get a scrappy HBP for goshsakes!

get it into a save position

so chokgne can pitch

SAAAAAAAAAAAlomon Torres

is now in. (That it's Salomon instead of Solomon has always bothered me. And that Jhonny Peralta too. Jerks.)

just as long as he doesnt hit Sosa in the head again....

Since Sosa can only go to a game if he buys a ticket, that would be one hell of a wild pitch.

Come on PIE!!!

WOW. Pie got a hit

Pie

singles through the hole on the right side! 1 on, 1 out

Pie did chase a pitch...

and got lucky.

COME ON!

I have $10 on the over!

Len: "Now, do you wear long sleeves when it's really cold?" This is brutal. For all parties, it seems.

3-0 to fontenot

Last I checked

Salomon Torres was pitching in the major leagues - so therefore, Pie can hit at least one major league pitcher.

1st and 3rd!!!

saw this pop up

and realized the 660 feed is a good seven seconds behind

Hit and Run...

1st and 3rd....

The Cubs

magically string two hits together. Single for Fontenot, Pie to 3rd.

Yeah!!!

Your sig cracks me up. What's it from?

SuperTroopers...

HERE WE GO BABY

Please don't hit into a DP! Please.

If Fonty..

would just steal on rag-arm Kendall...Theriot couldn't.

Bullpen update

It is now Piggy and Carlos Marmol loosening.

Run Fontenot Run!

Rally....Rally.....Rally!!!

n/t

Does Piggy have the pink backback?

LOL.

That's a good idea. Weigh him down. Get a little resistance when he's warming up. Builds muscle and character, rook!

Flies out... runners stay at the corners

Did Pie have a chance to score?

No... shallow fly to right

from what it looks like on gameday...

no since it was very very shallow right field.

I'd feel a lot better

if we can push that third run across!

I'd feel a lot better if Soriano hut one out

Soriano...

tie game maybe?

Soriano

admires a FASTBALL on the outside corner. Come on Sori.

Make that 2

n/t

Anyone else having site problems?

This thread has really slowed down for me in the last few minutes. Really choppy.

Ridiculous

strike zone

Fontenot

steals, no throw on a pitch in the dirt. Wish granted, speed fans.

Fontenot takes 2nd uncontested

Strikes out... how predictable

Soriano

whiffs on a 92mph fastball low. Tremendous.

Torres is SCARED!!

not scared of blowing him away with a 92mph fastball, apparently

Low potassium culprit for Zambrano

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080402&content_id=2481953&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

Doesn't Z know that Kazakhstan is the number one exporter of potassium, all other countries have inferior potassium???

base hit

please?

I think Soriano is our worst 2-out hitter

And this is his 3rd AB in that spot. forcing Lee to lead off innings.

and Alf is our best 3 out hitter.

He did it again! I tell you, when you need a 3rd out, Soriano is CLUTCH, baby!!!! /overthetop

in the words of Dick Vermeil,

"I wouldn't disagree with it, I wouldn't disagree with it."

wHERE'S the photo of Alf, SWL?

"I KILL ME" --Alf

@#$#%$^!!!!

We pay him how much again?

SORIANO???

I said it last year, I am thinking it again

What would soriano be doing if he was not in the majors

???

I don't see the relevance? He is a BASEBALL PLAYER. He'd probably be in the minors.

Looking studly in his Hummer?

better response than mine.

+1

i saw that Hummer...

when he was in Texas...pimped out to the max

They need to put...

Kosuke in the 2 hole...Jeez Louise!

as quickly as possible...

A Good Team

Gets 3 quick outs and Brings up Lee, A-Ram, And Fuku

A good team doesn't strand runners at 2nd and 3rd in the 7th

Here-Here

I'll let you know if I find one! :) Just kidding. Go Cubs!

Yes they do.

But they keep momentum.
Bad teams let the other team start a new rally

Very poor

between inning song choices today

Very poor "during" innning performance today

Yes, I feel the team's...

..."in dugout" performance has been quite outstanding, though.

Showing a replay

of Torres pumping his fist and jumping around like he just won the World Series.

"I bet Fonzie didn't care for that too much." - BB

Yeah, Bob, and I bet opposing pitchers just looooove it when Soriano admires his home runs at the plate.

meh

rally turned to crap. Soriano apparently can't hit in clutch.

We do not have a Good team

...yet

We were able to put up 3

on Gagme yesterday, we still have two innings to go. Next inning will be key with the big guys coming up.

There's always tomorrow

It's not in the cards today folks

Double

for a "Joe Dillon", who cruises into 2nd like a rolling stone.

Don't be so optimistic

They keep saying its cold

I'm in Buffalo Grove and it;s like 60. How damn cold can it be downtown?

WBBM newstime: 4:05

it's 48 degrees downtown

Speedy Kendall

beats out an infield hit to 1st base.

Watching the replay, that was really an excellent call by the umpire. The runner beat Piggy's foot by mere inches.

Who gave the Pirates Cubs jerseys?

Yosh, hence his termination!

i wish they were wearing pirate jerseys - then we'd be in FIRST place

The Cubs can not give up any more runs!

Freakin Kendall...

noodle arm MF!

The Cubs are not looking so good......

Lee

backhands and takes it himself for out #1. Also a nice job of freezing Dillon at 3rd.

"Jeez.. This has not been good"- Ron Santo

The Cubs are playing like...

...they need a pep talk from Bobby Knight.

I like it, but sub out "Bobby Knight" for "Lou Holtz on ESPN" and you've got yourself a winner.

TOUCHAY

n/t

or Lou Holtz??

n/t

yep...

I can't take....

anyone serious who sounds like daffy duck.

LOL

When you're crossing a river, and you ask if I will save you from drowning... "I say, you're damn right I'll save you. and then we cross the river, and he starts to go under, so I race to shore. I yell back at him in the water, you can make it, you can make it. But he turned around and went back to the other shore. You see, he ended up swimming the same distance as crossing the river, but he didn't make it."

add lisps... and that was one of his speeches. LOL I still don't get it... sounds like he stranded his teammate.

hahahahahahahahaha. So motivational! Why doesn't this man still have a coaching job?! It boggles the mind!

have you noticed....

that espn has installed NASCAR-type pull-off plactic on their camara lens when is on set?

what's a camara?

I believe it's a coupe that Chevrolet used to make

Either that or an old, old wooden ship. No wait, that's Diversity. sorry.

In Lou Holtz' defense

He could turn around a 1-10 team into a national title contender.... OVERNIGHT.

Yep

South Carolina was a big time contender... NOT. Holtz talks like daffy and looks like Granny Clampette...

That would do them some good

The Cubs bullpen has been atrocious

In a related story, the sky is blue.

But it's our strength, right? It WILL be. BELIEVE.

And kerry wood hasn't even gotten into the game yet! :-)

I'm confused

They didn't say anything about a split squad today?

Kendall is 2 for 3 with a walk.

Well done, old friend. Well done.

Yeah, nice timing Jason. Must be lovable imp Bernie Brewer who gives him that extra special oomph.

With a drawn-in infield,

a grounder to Theriot. 6-3 on the putout, but run #6 scores. 2 outs.

6-2, as 90210 scores

What are the chances that the Cubs come back from a
6-2 deficit in the 8th inning?

100% if you believe in them!!!!!!

2%

If you've followed them your whole life

lol. I was being facetious, of course.

Give them 100 tries, and maybe they'll do it

I think the Gatorade...

...jug was spiked with Sominex.

In comes

Bob "This Is My First Appearance of '08, I Swear" Howry

I'll be shocked...

...if the Brewers don't throw at someone before this is over, especially with a 4 run lead.

I right hope they do. Out comes belligerent Lou to yell, kick, and throw sh##. Cubs get fired up. Couldn't hurt!

No. They'll do it tomorrow, on get away day.

Note to Cubs pitchers:

Stop. Hitting. The. Batter.

Also...

Stop. Letting. Batter. Hit. Ball.

Speaking of midseason form,

It sounds like some of the ledge-jumpers are.

Would I rather the Cubs win today? Yes. I'm just glad the season is more than one week in length.

We'll know more about this team by the first week or so in May.

in the words of someone who can't be here right now...

"Loud, sustained applause."

This is what you get...

...sometimes when the expectations are high. You need a little slap in the face to wake up, and forget about the press clippings and Vegas odds.

Wonder what Tigers fans

are saying right now?

Probably not much different, I suspect. :)

They have JJ, so I'm sure they're relaxed.

Good thing I wasn't drinking anything when I read that

or else it would be all over my computer screen.

I love the attitude...

I think that it's all a matter of where we bat Fukudome. BAT HIM 2ND , LOU!

Definitely. Actually, first you fire Lou, then hit him 2nd, and it's WORLD SERIES ALL THE WAY BABY!

That is, hit Fookie 2nd, although the alternative would be quite entertaining on a Veeckian scale.

LOL, agreed.

or seeing him run down the line on a dribbler.

This wouldn't bother me nearly as much.

If we weren't losing to the Brewers.

The Cubs have 17 games against the Brewers this season

Most of those are home, too.

Patience, grasshopper.

The shadows are in our favor...

Going to the eighth

down by 4.... Lets get some runs!

(video shows some guy driving a car horribly weaving under control in a parking lot)

"Does your poor driving record precede you? At SafeAuto, that doesn't scare us off."

Well there was your first mistake...

**OUT of control

Can anyone comment

on how pissed Santo is at the moment?

Humans have not yet developed appropriate words to convey that sentiment.

He's pretty exasperated...

...and not even trying to hide it, God bless him.

That's what Ron does best

I love him, and he is an inspiration to all who come in contact with him.

But nothing will beat Pat and Steve Stone when they teamed up on radio in the 2003 playoffs. I'll take that every day of the week.

Very...

A moan and groan every opportunity he gets. But I can't complain b/c I'm doing the same.

I'm only just now noticing your avatar, so...HEY!

If the moon were made of barbeque spare ribs, would ya eat it?

Hm? What?

What was that? I have trouble hearing things SO LOW TO THE GROUND!

haha, kidding kidding. : ) I LOVE Paterno on Big Ten Media Day. No one better.

Santo IS in mid-season form

Like we're losing a playoff game

So, what you're sayin is:

He's in post-season form

LOL

mixed metaphors anyone?

Why is Leiber warming up?

Save him for tomorrow.

OT

Has anyone seen this Detroit lineup?? Rediculous... I'm just saying! Then get blanked by the royals!

renteria
placido polanco
sheff
ordonez
cabrera
something's wrong when the best hitter in the NL is batting 5th in the AL
guillen
pudge
and jacque jones batting 8

JJ batted 8th for us

for awhile last year... I don't feel quite so bad about our lineup.

Strike 3...

Fukudome IS human...

I can't watch this anymore...

I'll check back later to see if we did any damage. Go Cubs!

hes hasnt been up yet

atleast howry isn't pitching

like crap

Speakin of crap

Note to self, do not devour chinese food in anger.

160-2 baby, Believe!!!

especially...

kung pao chicken

It's the Kung Pao, sir.

George likes his chicken spicy.

and extra MSG

i spoke

way to soon

I've said it once, I'll say it again:

Howry has mediocre stuff. I don't get how he was even in consideration for the closer role.

I know, I know, I know... 2 games in...

but I need some help folks. I'm way to pissed about this for only the 2nd game... I don't think I can deal with another season of this. Any chance they're gonna improve, or should consider Arena Football?

Deep breath

Like I said, if you get this way now, you'll never make it to Memorial Day.

You lose 60, you win 60 and the other 42 are tossups. We've seen one of each. The Cubs are due for the third.

Of course the Cubs are going to improve. And by "dealing with another season of this," if you mean one that ends with a division title and a postseason berth, I can deal with that all season long, every season.

I mean

I can't deal with another start like last year... because I'm not sure I'll make it through it this time.

Maybe I'm just taking this worse because I'm surrounded by Brewer fans who feel the need to rub this in my face.

Oh my God.

Jason Kendall is the devil. I say again: Jason Kendall is the devil.

Jason Effin Kendall

boo

Face

meet palm.

I'm done for today.

nevermind

I think I dislike Kendall

I don't ever recall...

Kendall having a day like this last year

Cos he never did.

That's because

they very rarely do... and they go somewhere else and it happens all the time.

Kendall, Hart, Braun =

Cub killers. Ouch.

Can someone please

give me one positive takeaway from this game? D.Lee hit a HR I guess is one thing

Wood

allowed not a single run...

And Soto did, too.

And Wuertz pitched pretty well, though he had to load the bases to do so.

There's plenty positive:

DLee and Soto going yard.
Felix ripped a tough pitch.

Actually I guess that's about all...

Soto went yard.

n/t

No.

Really, you can talk about Lee and Soto's HR you're not going to win many games having two positives. Look at the cons, Soriano and Ramirez did squat again today, Lilly was awful, Howry got ripped, Hart might as well have watched people steal bases, Pie can't hit a cut off man to save his life. This is unacceptable. I don't want to hear any crap about it being "being game number 2", mental mistakes like not hodling someone on and giving to much of a secondary lead, and not hitting cut off men is not acceptable in game 2 or 152. Why on Earth would would you send Ramirez with Fukudome up. I dont' care what the situaton was, he's not fast enough, and doesn't run enough to get a good jump. This team plays like a bunch of old men. Why in the world is it that every team seems to hit the ball. Why is it that terrible teams can score, but the Cubs can't. We couldn't advance runners if the Brewer's were wearing blindfolds high on meth. I know its early, but how can it not be concerning when you look like absolute rubbish against a team you should be jumping out of your pants to play. Give me a break.

Very well said.

i'm done for today...

now i gotta go home and listen to my son explain why he got a 60 in algebra (progress report)

Well...

As Judge Smales likes to say, the world needs ditch diggers too.

that should be good.

gotta take the good w/ the bad

but i bet we see a lineup like this tommorrow: sori, fuku, lee, aram, dero, soto, pie, theriot,p!!

DWaryle with the walk!

C'mon, people, get excited!

Nice bullpen, huh.

So when does this advertised wondrous strength of the Cubs show up?

Two games and all runs via the long ball. STILL can't manufacture a bloody run to save our lives.

Yep, after two games they can't manufacture a run

Ai-yi-yi.

cubbie kool aid

It's going to

be a long season Bruce and I'm not talking about baseball.

Not Bruce...

We better call this a night... it's pointless to try to convince these people of what a baseball season is. Sure we didn't win, but at least we're not invincible like we'd think we'd be if we had won both games. I feel like coming back 2 weeks from now and saying I told you so.

I take it

you weren't in here last season? It can get really depressing listening to some of these guys.

You...

are correct. I'm thinking after the first two games, I'm not gaining as much from these game threads as I thought I would. Sad part is... we are all here because we love the Cubs. But I'd like to see some insightful commentary if possible.

Exactamundo

And you're right, sue, if things keep up like this, it is going to be a long season (and I'm not talking about baseball, either).

Do some people just like to be miserable?

I do have permission

from Al to start another game thread on game days so maybe I will tomorrow. Hopefully you will join us in there. I can't stand all of this doom and gloom crap.

Agreed

Being realistic is fine. They certainly aren't off to a good start. That's obvious.

But extrapolating that to a disaster of a season and making judgments based on two games is ridiculous.

Soto strikes out

why does this game have the feel of a major league team against a group of 6 year olds

Wow, the Brewers are a group of very talented 6-year-olds.

in what way did we look like an actual team today, that game was pathetic and tomorrow has the

potential to be much worse with dempster pitching

I wouldn't bother

watching if I were you.

It's gonna be a long summer......

Absolutely NO OFFENSE.

Yes, it is going to be a long summer

if I have to read all this whinging every time the Cubs lose.

Pie strikes out swinging (2 out)

theriot and fontenot were kinda cute when they played well last year

but they are not major league players by any mean, get people on this team that know what the hell they are doing, we need wins.

Wow

Game 2 and were jumping off the cliff..... Love the fair weather fans

Not fair weather...

just worried about "here we go again".

Game Over

Mercifully.

Seriously....

Its only the first two games. This team will play well.

Lou will get this team winning.

I hope so.

I really do.

Fonty pops out!

Bad bad game... ....ah well let's get em tomorrow.

Thats why we

play 162 of em....

dont worry it could be worse

dusty could still be the manager

I'd say ah well too

But Dumpster's pitching tomorrow. Not good chances. I think the winning streak will have to start with Houston

I agree, it will just be interesting to see how long lou will leave him in the rotation and finally realizes

what the hell was I thinking in starting this guy

Can we give him at least 2-3 starts please?

Thanks,

I actually don't mind if he pitches bad because then Lou will pull him out of the rotation quicker

Ah yes, Dumpster. Never gets old.

Fitting last image on MLB.TV today...

"Aw man, I have to go back to school tomorrow?! CEDENO!!!"

haha...

are you a wildcat by any chance?

I am.

Great school...

I'm an avid Cats football fan, which is probably no surprise... I've enjoyed your posts today... i think we have the same sense of humor.

ever visit Lake the Posts?

Haha, thanks. And as for LTP: Yes, every day! I have the RSS feed in Safari. I've also called quite a few NU football games for WNUR.

Medill student?

n/t

Right again, you're on a roll. I'm on my way to TV anchoring auditions, as a matter of fact, in a few minutes.

Very nice.

I went to your Broadcasting rival Syracuse (Newhouse School of Communications grad). I'm actually friends with a bunch of broadcasters and producers from there... we are officially networking.

Sorry it's taking so long to respond.

And I don't know if you're even still here. Just got back from the studio. Nicely done, there, Syracuse. Did your dean allegedly falsify quotes in an alumni letter too? : )

I graduate in June. Do you know anyone in California? Looking for a job there....and I have some leads in Santa Barbara...

Did you call this one?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hQOmaWdxEg

Oh, just joshin' with you, fellow Big 10'er

Huh? What?

What was that? I have trouble hearing things SO LOW TO THE GROUND!

haha, kidding kidding. : ) I LOVE Paterno on Big Ten Media Day. Really, there is no one better. Of course, I don't need to tell you that....

Fundamentally yucky

Seems like I am watching a bit of a replay of last year's start...an offense that can't score because they lack a true leadoff hitter....boneheaded mistakes on the basepaths and in the field....bullpen questionable....guess we wait for Lou to blow up again...wish we had a leadoff guy.....and wish we didn't spend so much on Swinging Soriano....

did the money come out of your wallet?

who cares how much he gets paid... i'd rather have him in there over other alternatives... is his contract preventing the cubs from signing marquee players?

No you are right....they could go out and splurge on a leadoff guy.....

Soriano is just frustrating to watch at times.....

Most def...

but when he's hot.... he's magma lava hot babbby!

I leave with one last

CEDENO!!!!

FYI on Kendall

Kendall got Lasik surgery over the winter. Perhaps he can see again. Doesn't help his arm, but perhaps the guy's lack of production -- declining over the past few years could be chalked up to.....bad vision.

Hmm....yeah.....I could see that.

Agrees with you...

haha, thanks santos, I appreciate that. (as always)

Pathetic

Allow me to propose the radical....put our two most fundamentally strong hitters #1 and #2 in the lineup and see what happens....

1. Kosuke
2. DeRosa
3. Lee
4. Ramirez
5. Soriano (piece of ^%*@)
6. Soto
7. Theriot
8. Pie

That...

is an actual good idea...prepare to never see it happen.

I'd flip Riot and Pie

but I'd much rather have that than the current version.

cub fans

It has only been two games. This season is going to come down to the wire. Have more faith in your cubs and maybe put a little less faith in Fukudome. Great opening day, but a fundamentally strong hitter does not strike out and then spin in a circle because his balance is so off.

Oh well....

at least DLee got the bat going..... and Fuku's game yesterday....and Z looks like he is focused this year...Marmol is still looking good....too early to freak out....I always like to watch a good three or four weeks of baseball before I start to get a feel for a team....let the BrewSlobs enjoy these early victories...we will count on their pitching choking it up later in the season....but would love a leadoff hitter...

LOU:

"We didn't execute!"

LOU:

"Sori is a pile of dung."

heh, I'm going out on a limb and calling you a big, dirty, liar,

but more on that subject. Soriano had a pretty lousy April last year as well, which can be correlated to the weather(avg temp in DR: 66 to 84 F). Give the man some time

Time?

Oh, do you mean like during the playoffs versus Arizona where he vaporized??? Soriano is a $136 franchise player. A franchise player DELIVERS, rather than hit home runs when the score is 9-2. A franchise player doesn't swing from his bloody heels on every pitch when the imperative during his at bat is to move the runner along.

Sweet Mary

I was brain-storming what you'd say, and I'd be damned if you didn't come up with the hypothesized results. How many times are you going to bring up 136, Arizona, and playoffs in one posting? Ramirez was putrid in the playoffs as well, why don't you say anything about that?

And Soriano has delivered, you just never bring it up and/or never even bothered to research it(or don't know how). Look at his "clutch" stats, specifically when it's Late and Close:

.318 BA, .356 OBP, .518 SLG, .873 OPS

or how about when it's tied?

.291 BA, .332 OBP, .588 SLG, .920 OPS

Your conclusion that he doesn't "deliver" is invalid, kind sir. Don't defame Soriano because of things that he actually does well at. Jeeze, this bashing gets really old really quickly

Put this one behind you,

and go out and get 'em tomorrow!

2 games don't make a season. A lot of guys still getting their feet under them. This team will be more than ok.

Soriano back to leadoff spot...Theriot in the 2 hole...

Lou just seemed to just decide that at the press conference.....

and another step is taken

Twoard the crowning of Sammy Jr

Face meet palm

Some reporter's cell phone

went off in the presser. Lou interrupted his answer to say "Hey, there we go!" And kinda gave a bemused smile at the whoever's phone it was. Then gave up on the answer.

Lou totally seemed to make up the Soriano

back to the leadoff spot on the spot during the press conference....hilarious....you could see the wheels spinning and then he just came out with it......on the fly managing.....

We will win tomorrow....

and crush Dave Bush's very nice 5.12 ERA in 2007.

We'll see how Dempster pitches tomorrow. He had some fairly good stuff in ST.

1) Theriot
2) Fukudome
3) Lee
4) Ramirez
5) Soriano
6) Soto
7) DeRosa
8) Pie
9) Dempster

The good thing is you can wake up tomorrow and it's a new day. The Cubs aren't the type of team that is only going to score 1-2 runs in a game.

The NL Central has another thing coming if they underestimate the Cubs.

LET'S GET 'EM TOMORROW GENTLEMAN!

If Soriano is better leading off

That's fine.

He isn't your standard leadoff hitter. But the Cubs seemed to do pretty darned well when he led off.

Agreed.

I'm calling it a night... have a good one people... great news is.... we play again tomorrow.

Wow.... watching Horn..

Smartest thing Jay Mariotti has ever said: "It's the first week of the season... relaaaaaxxxxx!"

Astros are horrible

and will be in town after (probably) dropping 3 out of 4 to the Pads....they really look bad, and I can't chalk it up all to the Padres pitching.

Whoa, I think I can

If a team has Peavy and Young pitch at Petco Park, you're more likely going to win than lose.

Good Grief

I dont know what to say about these 1st two games. I hear some people saying "Don't worry, the Brewers are a good team." True, but the Cubs are better. The Cubs hitting is better than the Brewers pitching. 2 runs is no good. I dont expect Lou is going to let the team get off to any slower of a start. He needs to get on them and get on them early. If the Cubs are going to go deep in the playoffs they need to get mad about losing 2 at home.

If Young can put together

another good season, maybe I can agree. His '07 was not as good as '06. I think the jury is still out on him.

Well

I was pissed after todays game, but u gotta let it roll off.

I know i got front row tickets on the first base line to see dempster pitch tommorow, and you all will still be watching the game. 2 games down 160 more to go till the cubs make the playoffs at least.

I hope they can

get it together and soon but, just the same, based on what I've seen, I think it's time to scale down the expectations.
