David returned to the ballpark on this sunny Sunday and shot these four game action photos:
Top to bottom: Mark DeRosa dives for a foul fly in the first inning; Ryan Dempster lays down a perfect bunt in the second inning; Ryan Theriot slides in safely after his second double of the game in the fourth inning; Reed Johnson dives but fails to catch Jose Bautista's fly ball in the fifth. After missing this catch, Johnson made a heads-up play by holding up his hands. The ball had gotten lodged in the ivy branches, and even though it was visible, the umpires agreed it couldn't be played and called it a ground-rule double.

DeRo
Was it as scary in person as it seemed on TV?
Great shots!

what do you shoot with?
David, what equipment do you use for your game shots?
Ross - April 20, 2008
I use a Nikon D70S...
digital SLR camera with a Nikkor 70-300mm zoom lens. It is an older model, but has been very dependable. I also keep a compact Fuji E900 camera with me, for shots in the bleachers. The Fuji is also an older model, but is offers many manual controls that are not available on other compact cameras. I have to keep my equipment simple, and to a minimum, in the bleachers.
I was scared when DeRosa was heading toward the wall. From my angle, I was afraid that his head was going to impact the brick wall.

From LF...
... we could tell that DeRo was OK; a number of outfielders have mentioned that with the new field, there is less warning when those bullpen mounds suddenly come up when they are chasing after balls.

beautiful!

Question about Reed's play...
What would have happened if Reed would have stopped play, the umpires came over, and it was deemed that the ball was actually playable? Does everyone get an extra base?
I’d e-mail the Queen of Snark Carrie Muskat, but, well…you know.

I believe it would have been an inside-the-park HR...
Johnson doesn’t actually stop the play. He just makes a request to have the ball ruled unplayable. The umpire then makes the decision as to whether or not it is unplayable. Play wasn’t stopped. The umpire just retroactively ruled it a ground-rule double.

I believe that is correct.
Both runners had crossed the plate by then.

Thanks!
Questions answered, in more than one sentence, and I didn’t feel belittled.
Carrie Muskat, eat your heart out!

Love these photos
Your pix are always real “money” shots. I know you’ve probably got 20 or more you don’t publish, but still…
Saving the DeRo pic for the next time someone badmouths his talent.

More great photos.
The one with DeRosa looks pretty close to the wall.
