good game so far

Dempster settled in now

Holy Cow!!!!!

“That’s one of the best catches I have ever SEEN!!” – Len.

That catch was AMAZING

WTG Johnson!!! Kudos

that catch...

was amazing..

ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!!!

...Web Gem of the Year….hands down.

463

are you kidding me, Dome obp is unreal. I guess he is the real deal.

Kinda OT:

I hope someone snagged one of those “Let Teddy Win!” signs from the President’s mascot race for our Ted.

Holy shit!!!

That was an amazing catch by Reed.

poop*
That was worth

saying the big one.

LOL

I used it to

Now I'll have to

stay up for Sports Center to see where it is the Top Ten Plays of the day.

anything but 1 is disgracefull

unless someone jumps into the stands entirely and robs a home run and manages to throw a runner out at home on the same play

Amazing catch

That goes up there with Fuld’s catch. Maybe even better.

that could be web gem of the year
Description please.....
no kidding

i hope they put the video on gameday

That will make every highlight reel in the country.
basically

long ball to deep center field, johnson stretches out and catches the ball beautifully and slides his head into the fence

Hope the wall..

is padded..

reed on his horse towards the LCF wall, running full speed

...catches the ball in the upper web of his glove smashes into the wall.

Wow, what a great catch, amazing, best I've ever seen, gosh, that was great, wonderful, terrific

PLEASE SHOW IT! Jeez! I was in the other room and missed it and it’s driving me crazy how they’re talking about how wonderful it is but NOT SHOWING THE REPLAY. Wake up, Comcast Sports Net!

I'm sure they will show

it again yet tonight. Just keep watching.

It will make highlight reels for decades.

Just fib to your kids and pretend you saw it live, you’ll see it so much you’ll eventually be able to describe it perfectly.

Pat and Ron both..

said you’ll never see a better catch….wow…can’t wait to see it..

you will see that one for years to come.
Put a helmet on Reed while he's out there in center.

Could have broken his skull on that catch.

That's what I initially thought

When he was sliding I was like “Oh nooo” and then he got up and I was like “OMGYES!!!”

Did you

see the bill of his hat? And Kerry Wood in the pen watching it happen right in front of him…priceless.

Yeah!

I noticed that too. And yes, Wood and the rest of the bullpen were priceless!

Yeah, my heart was in my throat for second there.

I think he tucked his head a split second before impact. Caught the brunt on his shoulders.

Tuck and... brace yourself?

n/t

Sounds about right.
Soto having trouble tonight with the bat
had to log on and say...

that catch was:

re.donk’u.lous adj.
1. significantly more absurd than ridiculous to an almost impossible extreme; without possibility of serious consideration.

wow johan perez
Whats this "Playing for Peanuts" they keep advertising
Won't see that often...

error on D-Lee..

Ruh-Roh

C’mon Demp.

Anyone up..

in the b’pen for us?

Don't believe so.

At least, L&B have not mentioned it, nor have we seen anyone out of their chairs.

johnson's catch.

for those of you who are following on gameday, they just added the video of johnson’s catch.

also....BBTN is at 11pm CST on ESPN 2 tonight...

...curious as to what coverage that catch will get.

I'll have

to catch that too. Thanks!

It was one

heck of a catch. It really really went all out for it.

OK.

Now Lieber?

DP!!

Man on third

Get him out Demp.
my kingdom

for a strikeout

poop
there ya go
appropriate, yes?
well

one could say so..

i'm stuck on delay

through .mlb.tv

you scare me!!! damnit, just now see it. :(

sorry... :-(
DOUBLE CRAP!!!
what happened?

gameday is really slow today…

BAse hit to right, scores the runner from third.
damn. thanks for the update.... nt
3-2 on a single
Guzman scored
Wow.

I’m sure this has been mentioned before, but Estrada is enormous.

THE JOHNSON CATCH IS ON GAMEDAY

!!! omg!

for those who havent seen Reed's catch

It is now on game day!!!

Ty Cobb

would be proud.

Maybe we should...

get rid of that Lee guy at first…cost us a run…

Was Lee given an error?

Coulda sworn that graphic said 5 hits and no errors.

Len said it was an unearned run.
yeah, he was

Nevermind.

johnson almost with a hit
That catch was lame.

Reed Johnson would have, like, done a cartwheel and caught that with his hat.

ANd on his way to catch the ball

he would have found a cure for cancer.

agreed

what the hell was he thinknig out there

Rally Killer...

Un-Scrappy…

ball four to Lee....he couldnt have hit that fair if he had too...
EMBARASSING

Losing to the worst team in the league….

we aren't playing the cardinals..
i feel bad for D-Lee, first he gets a really tough error call

then he gets called out on an obvious ball

COMON! demp 1-2-3
That was ball four

Theriot had the right idea. If that was a strike, or anywhere near the plate, Lee would have put the bat on it. He was staying out of the double play. Horrible call behind the plate. Umpire was blinded by the fact the catcher stood up to throw to second.

Agreed...

hella throw too…

GOTTA HAVE THAT SPEED AT THE TOP OF THE ORDER!

can pie play ss?
Scrappy-Do

caught 5 times stealing already…..

That's atrocious
Demp s t r e c h e s out to grab Lee's toss

2 out.

need a couple runs now

pretty soon the cubs will realize they are playing the nationals

Demp grinding it out like an ACE. Now let’s score some runs!

good start...

single for A-Ram..

Oky-Doky

get im over, get im in

DeRosa

needs a day off.

Base Hit!!

First and second NO OUTS.

Dome

singles…first and second no out…

The most fundamentally sound......

baseball player in MLB

kosuke's ground rule double

i’m just following on gameday and they just posted the video of it. I didn’t realize a-ram would have scored if it didn’t bounce off the stands. that sucks.

For your pleasure...

Here’s the Johnson catch!

dero.

i love how derosa just stands there and looks at kerry wood. i don’t even think they were saying anything, they were just in awe.

Thanks!!!!!

my work comp does not allow streaming

You're welcome!
Pinch runner maybe...

?

Perfect bunt

Dero can play baseball.

About to lose my Dish feed.

Getting hammered by wicked storm. Any play by play would be appreciated.

bases loaded for cedeno

hmm….....let’s see if he repeats..

IBB

bases juiced…one out for Onedec

I Feel......

like we should be winning and it’s time to bust this game open!!

IBB to Geo

...thier loaded for D Ward (hitting for Cedano)

ONEDEC TIME ! ! !

n/t

I had

that same feeling last night, right around this time

I'm ready for the Magic
WARD

into ph…nats changing pitchers…lefty vs lefty..

Can Ronny hit

another grand slam? PLEASE?!?

Guess he won't get the chance.
why take out cedeno?

help me out with the logic here- i know DWard was amazing for us last year, but isn’t cedeno doing incredibly right now?

More to the point...

...why put Ward in whien it’s automatic that they’ll put in the lefty? Ward against lefties last season: .250/.400/.375

"His organ donor card lists his beard."

LOL

Curious move.

with Cedeno hitting so well. I guess we’ll see how it plays out.

O'conner...

in to pitch…

Yeah, that is a strange play I think. I guess we bring in Murton and make them take the LOOGY out, with DeRo moving to second? That sounds good I guess, at first I thought it meant a fontenot PH for demp.

good call...

n/t

OH no....

Ginger in for Ward…

The Big Murt with the bases loaded

here we go

hmm

i like cedeno cause he has speed to beat out a groundball double play

too bad

we don’t have any switch hitters on the bench.

I hate the double PH. Terrible. But make it work MURT!

Walk

would be good here…

at the very least

sac fly

don't give him the green light
I like our odds
thie clown cant find it...

....heads up ginger.

Yeah, that would be useful, although you’d have to think for a decent switch hitter to be a bench player, they’d pretty much have to be Ward-level in the field or worse.

good eye murton
Yes

Ball 4 tie game…

Waaaaaaaalk

to tie ze game!

Hank White

is your pinch “hitter”...

Good eye Matt!
Kind of

anticlimactic, but we’ll take it

haha definately

but I’d take a blanco hr here..

Man... Clogging home plate

Discpicable (sp)

burned

our two best hitters off the bench on that. glad it atleast payed off

Love it...

Clog those bases boys…

Chants of 'Let's go Cubbies' loud through Gameday Audio
thats cubs-nats games for yah
NEW PITCHER

IN: 52 Saul Rivera RHP

i would have gone with pie
NEW PINCH-"HITTER"

IN: 17 Mike Fontenot PH
OUT: 24 Henry Blanco PH

no chance for another walk here since Fonty doesnt walk

...not one BB this year

no batters left? sept pie

meh

lou is flying through his bench.

just pie left now i think

Wow

Lou is putting every batter hes’ got out there this inning

Len or BB just said that with the Nats bullpen,

this is in the Cubs favor

DOUBLE DOUBLE PH
lou, the brewers/cards game was NOT a good example of how to use bench players.

We still got

Pie, Zambrano, and Pie

Marquis, not pie twice...
Fontenot

strikes out. Brilliant!

strike out

shit, well we have reed now..

shit
i would have gone with the classic "son of a bitch" there
That's all I

could get out. Too pissed.

awful job, mike!

At this point it's really not his fault that he's bad at baseball.

It’s Lou’s fault for running him out there so often.

yeah, should have gone with Z there, speaking of a switch hitter on the bench.

still think

pie would have been better in that spot, he’s been making contact with the ball

"If theres any justice in the baseball world"

Love it

"If there's any justice in the baseball world, Reed Johnson will get a big hit and make that catch really mean something tonight."

Huh?

There is no justice in the baseball world.

Johnson grounds out 6-3.

damnit damnit damnit

the bench is NOW depleted

Ron's

not happy

Horrible Execution

Can’t be leaving the bases loaded

noo

that never happens to us…....bases loaded is almost a kiss of death

not this inning...
that was a failure

in hindsight Lou should have kept Cedeno in, that started a domino effect, but atleast we tied it

I think Lou overplayed that one...

...but then again he knows a little more than I do.

Should've Squeezed
Lou

Pulled a LaRussa there…

Lou definitely overplayed that. Bad.

ugh....

c’mon carlos!!

at least...

...we have the heart of the order in the 9th, but jeez if we go extras, I’m not liking the fact we have to rely on Marquis and Z to pinch hit (after Felix)

Who is this reliever we brought in? New guy from the minors? I have never seen him pitch before! At least not in the past day or so.

never heard of him either

carlos mamal?

One f..'n run after all that BS

D A M N

Can't Understand

why PHers don’t choke up on the bat and just try to meet the ball – after all they’re supposed to make contact first and foremost.

I do not know why you said White Castle, but I probably should go there in a little bit.

Slider, get it?
fontenot

Des Moines is calling….....

Get on the bus, kid.
damnit and fontenot lets that go by

AHHHHHHHHHHHH
and i was just going to make fun of the awful “fontenot as a defensive sub” portion of that mess. and he had to go and prove me right.

He wants to be

an iowegan

Why would anyone want that...
Perhaps Sue could provide an answer??
Iowegans rule!
no one would

lucky he doesnt have a choice

Ahem.....

nothing wrong with that.

Hmmmmm......

Is Fontenot really better than Patterson??

Could someone with more baseball knowledge than me please explain??

E Patt on the DL

right now…

Good explanation, thanks.
E-Patt wasn't on the DL at the end of spring training.

I dunno. Fontenot had a good month? Lou doesn’t want to break up the LSU double play combo? Beats me.

marmol about to implode
Brian Roberts, Please!
Marmol

12 pitches 7 balls 5 strikes

Carlos...

....take a deep breath, dude….

is this game

a lot like last night. or is it just me?

Now....

.....get this hot dog Milledge out

I'm nervous...

like a long haired cat in a room full of rocking chairs….

milledge > church
cbs

showed 2 strikes on those 4 pitches

shit .......I mean that was close
Whew!

Drama. Don’t need it.

whew......

ground out to third…inning over…

Nice!

Now let’s get about 5 this inning!!!!

That would be..

Sooooo sweet..

I'll buy

drinks if they do that. ;-)

I'm there...

:)

I'll drive to Iowa for that!!
Might calm me down...

Love/hate these nailbiters….

Aaron Boone

is a fossil

i actually was surprised to see aaron boone was still a living person

hes a nice guy

got an autograph from him when i was about 7

aaron boone

that is

Scrappy is out.
Nick Johnson's A Fatty
took away error on Fonty...

too f’ng kind…

this is starting to become one shitty game
Alright Aram

Crank one and we all go out and get toasted.

Damn...

thought he had one there…

gameday needs a different color ball for Outs and Runs/Hits, I get excited when i click back and see that blue ball, which i guess is the only time i like blue balls.

Can someone tell me why in the sam hell...

...Murton is back on the bench, DeRosa’s still in left, and Fontenot is playing the field? Because I don’t get it.

From your keyboard to Lou's ears.
Well

DeRo’s a better LF than Murton (with a much better arm) and a much better 2B than Fontenot. As versatile as he is, the one thing he can’t do is play two positions at the same time.

However...

I would say second base is a more important defensive position than left field.

This way the pitcher’s spot comes up one place earlier as well.

I wonder who the emergency catcher is now that Blanco is out.

Pie's the only player left...

...so you tell me. DeRosa, probably. Maybe Theriot. Or Johnson. Murton has the most catching experience besides our actual catcher, but apparently Lou thinks Murton is the right-handed Daryle Ward.

Well it's moot now

But I would LMAO at Big Z going out behind the plate.

(Obviously there are good reasons not to have your best pitcher go in as a catcher… I wonder if Wuertz or Howry can catch…)

DeRo was Bobby Cox's emergency catcher,

but that was one torn ACL ago.

DeRo

I believe…

i'm out

getting up early to head toward DC for tomorrow

better be good weather and a good game

good luck
well the weather is looking pretty bad

but hey…who knows~

Bring them

luck tomorrow.

well shit

i better after that pathetic hr

Is it my imagination

or are none of the Cubs hitting a lick on the road so far this year? We’ve played great at Wrigley, but not as well on the road.

speaking of gameday,

they need to stop making outs look like home runs. I keep getting all excited…

bad start...

for Howry…lead off single…

no bueno

whens the last time we turned a DP?

Couple innings ago IIRC
What

A joke

Bye bye.

“He went oppo”? Where is Len getting all this tonight?

That was totes inappropes!
He even said "eschewed."
THat Sucked.
HOWRY COW!
No kidding. Yuck.
An

absolute fucking joke

will nieves?

....first ML HR?

Ugly.

Who the fuck

is W. Nieves?

The guy who just beat the Cubs on a pitch not even anywhere near the strike zone
He was the Yankees backup catcher last year.

I presume he’s still a backup catcher now.

Howry...

....has just been awful so far this year…..jeez

too many wasted opptys....

too many men LOB…

I'll trade you...

a Fontenot for a Nieves.

Dan

i thought Howry wasn't to be trusted in a close game?

is that rule back on now?

Yet ANOTHER Patented Howry Disaster

So…why did Lou replace Marmol?

Marmol...

...didn’t pitch well tonight either

Because he doesn't want

Marmol’s arm to fall off by July?

One of those games, folks. Oh, well.

Cuz Marmol's arm is gonna pull a Wood

if they use him this often. Soto had the glove down and in, and Howry threw it up and over. Bad pitch. Happens everybody. It happens.

awwwww man...

that stung…and Demp deserved better…

so did Marquis last night
I head that..

such is baseball….

well

at the very least this should cool some of the WS talk around here.

need to get the next two now.

Howry gives up a HR to a CAREER .180 HITTER!
Who was hitting .317

Coming into this game.

Yes, I'm sure that this was the season...

...that a 30-year-old backup catcher has put it all together and become good at hitting baseballs.

Were you watching the game?

Didn’t look to me like that ball was anywhere near going out. Maybe a bloop hit.

The sun’s coming up tomorrow, last I heard.

No, actually, I'm at work.

But I don’t see the point of brining up Nieves’ .317 batting average; given his career it seems entirely irrelevant.

It's relevant if he's hitting well now

If Pie homers to win a game, does his weak career batting average matter?

I trust you understand the difference...

...between a 23-year-old with less than 250 career plate appearances and a 30-year-old backup catcher.

I trust you understand

baseball.

that might be the funniest post I have ever read.
Game, set, and match!!
Uh, yeah.

I just think that trying to judge a 30-year-old player off of 21-plate-appearances can be misleading. I’m sorry that this offends you.

agreed completely with this statement
W Nieves

In 63 major league games over four seasons with the New York Yankees and San Diego Padres, Nieves is hitting .161 with 11 RBI. He could be cut as soon as Lo Duca is healthy

missed your in game posts when the Cubs were on fire...

...crept back in now. Hmmmm

AWFUL

Cubs need to take a long look in the mirror after this one.

True

Too many wasted opportunities

I love

when your team goes out there and looks like they dont give a shit and then lose to the worst team in the league

way2go

Not counting Johnson

of course

Are you out of your mind?

Don’t give a shit? The chips didnt fall the way they have 15 other times this year. We will get back at them tomorrow. Maybe the fact that we have been in three cities, in three times zones, in three days may have something to do with the bats going a little cold. Not giving a shit is way off.

we

can just say they were tired, always a good out

We'll get

them tomorrow and Sunday.

lol

hope your right, I was chosing between going to this game or tomorrow. So far, I am glad I picked tomororow AND its suppose to rain

Maybe it will

move over quickly before the game.

thanks

hopefully or maybe hold off.

I'm with you there Sue...

2 outa 3 ain’t bad…

chill out everyone, we were running WAY hot coming into this game…it couldn’t last.
although the dumb PH/sub usage didn’t help

Seen A Lot

of long losing streaks start this way….

With a loss?

True. That is how most losing streaks start.

No, Genius

With stupid games like this, that the Cubs should’ve won but didn’t because of squandered oppotunities.

You're right.

We should go 162-0. Period.

Straw Man
Not particularly...

In losses, there will ALWAYS be squandered opportunities.

agreed

anything worse is unacceptable

Good for you

n/t

Hey Froemming

Maybe you don’t care, but pardon the rest of us who do.

You seem to

be one of a few in here over reacting. Settle down. It’s one damn game.

I care

But if I got this wound up after every loss, I wouldn’t bother watching baseball, because it wouldn’t be any fun.

Speaking of wound up...

Pot, calling Kettle.

I am certain you will be the first to go nuts when they win tomorrow.

Do you watch baseball?

Do You?
Everyday

I just remember a time when nut jobs, who think a loss in April will cause a tail-spin to occur, were the exception to visitors on this site, not the norm.

most of this is on

LOU! 4 batters in 2 at bats?! why pinch hit for the on-fire ronny cedeno, who has been nothing but clutch lately?!!!!! FONTENOT – i would rather have his doppleganger mickey morandini, and i HATED mickey morandini.

and then howry…STUNNING. i am sorry – the loss is no big deal we are fine but the INEPTITUDE of that 8th inning all that sh1t for ONE RUN terrible terrible moves F THAT SHIZ

take it EASY there, t1ger!! BREATHE! take a DEEP breath!!!!!

On Lou?

I didn’t like how quickly he burned through the bench… but it turned out not to matter. He got two left-right matchups in a critical situation, and in the end the short bench wasn’t the difference in the game.

He probably figured getting the matchups he wanted for those two hitters was likely to have a bigger impact on the game than having a short bench would. It’s hard to know the numbers on that, but I wouldn’t be surprised if, doing the math, using four batters there wasn’t a bad move in itself. What I might have done differently: burn Fonty or Pie instead of Ward to get Murton up (Lou used Pie this way in a game when Pie was really struggling, and I think if I were the opposing manager I would have just let Pie face the righty, but he ended up playing along), and then used Ward straight-up against their lefty, who sounded on the radio like he couldn’t throw a strike to save his life.

Good point...

Ward is our stud pinch hitter…..If he’s announced, he hits if it’s up to me. He knows how to take a walk too….

good lord

am I in a daycare center? temper tantrums

hey hey

just lettin a little out – maybe i wasn’t clear enough – we are fine, lou’s been great this year, teams been great. sorry it maybe came off too strong, but i can take a loss and i trust these guys

Fukudome

Along with good plate discipline, he needs to impart a sense of shame and disappointment unto his teammates when they lose like this.

that was

one point in my above rant and i got roasted – but the other point was that we GOT this year even if we hit a few tiny bumps

Howry

The ballclub has stopped hitting, and when you’re not hitting it puts a lot of pressure on the pitchers.

Putting in Howry with a game on the line is equivalent to taking out all your starters in a basketball game, you have thrown in the towel. The guy is simply a mop up pitcher at best.
And yet, Lou stubbornly continues to put him in games like this. I guess he doesn’t mind losing these kind of games.

nothing is wrong tonight, except for one thing

the hitting was just bad. The one problem is Howry. He always starts off slow but he shouldn’t be put into these situations if he has been struggling..

Nieves......

hits a pitch that:
1) eye level
2) more than 6 inches off the plate
Unbelieveable…...

Kearns was hitting .192 going into that at bat….FYI

this game

is very random – breaks, flukes, whatever. this team, i think, knows how to win and will get after it big time tomorrow

1999

Cubs get off to a 32-23 start going into June…they lose a Friday game to the White Sox…it’s OK, only one game…they get swept…it’s OK, just one series…next thing you know they go 20-50…and I suppose that’s OK?

Then you should follow some other team

or maybe not watch baseball at all. Good heavens, I thought a few victories would thin out the ledge jumpers, but not all of them, it appears.

Good teams...

don’t lose. They just don’t. A bad team in 1999 once lost a game on a Friday. They ended up being bad.

Maybe another reason could be.....

Our “stud” shortstop’s groin ripped off the bone, Wood, Prior, and a host of others were hurt or sucked. We are fine. We are playing good enough to win every ball game. Nieves of the world happen.

Good God.

Do us all a favor and go to bed. You are just ridiculous.

Even with tettible hitting Lou made some terrible decisions.

Fontenot and Howry?
Do you wanna lose?

Fontenot and Howry

Fontenot is ok, but I have never had confidence in Howry, even when he was pitching relatively well a couple of years ago, he gives up way too many home runs, especially in crucial situations.

Howry needs to be used strictly in mop up until:

1) He gets over his “slow start.”
2) They can get someone else to take his place.

Bad ballgame against brutal ballclub

Bob Howry is human batting practice this April. Brutal.

Mike Fontenot is even less useful than Matt Murton. He’s a butcher around 2nd base. Please for the love of God ship him back to Triple A tomorrow.

Carlos Marmol? His arm is going to fall off by June 1st at this rate.

Ryan Dempster? Again, a heckuva performance on a night when his stuff was less than good.

agreed with all statements

Howry is always like this this time of year apparently

Fontenot seems lost at the plate. I guess Patterson should be recalled soon.

Marmol is being overused

Is Losing OK?

I’m frankly surprised you people are fine with losing, especially winnable ball games.

we aren't fine with losing

its just that you can’t continue to bitch about it and hope it changes.

You win some

you lose some. They lost last night and they lost tonight. Before last night they won 6 in a row. Jesus Christ.

agreed

you can’t win them all

Nobody's okay with losing.

But talking about going 20-50 at this point is absurd. You’re being irrational and quite frankly, you sound like you’ve never watched a full season of baseball in your life. There are ups and downs; it’s 162 games, fer chrissakes.

teams go on skids during seasons

its common for teams to lose TWO in a row..

We differ on some things

but I’m with you 100 percent on this. Good post.

Get the next 2 in the series.......

which is very, very possible looking at the matchups and it would be a 5-2 week, which I’m sure EVERYONE would agree is a success.

Most level-headed baseball fans...

realize that a team can’t win them all. We have the second best record in baseball. Guy hit a pitch out of the zone out of the park. Props to him. We missed opportunities. It happens.

Exactly....

not like Howry threw him a meat ball that he jacked out of the park.

I agree

As much as the Cubs should beat the Nationals, even bad teams will get one or two on good ones. Hopefully they’ll right the ship and take the next two games.

We lost the first two of the season

then went on to win 6 of the next 7. Everyone relax. Please.

Good sign

I hate losing, and anyone on this thread that thinks it’s ok simply because it’s April, don’t know baseball. These wins and losses do count in September! We may look back and curse this loss.

Be that as it may, I am not really bothered by these losses, because our starting pitching is looking real good. The bullpen looks a little shakey, but hopefully that will work itself out as time goes on.

The hitting will be there, this team is too good not to hit. My worry has always been the pitching, and so far it’s been pretty darn good.

Key to the game....

Theriot getting thrown out at 3rd base. That was a kick in the nuts to momentum in my view.

Oh well, go get them tomorrow.

yeah

or that ground rule double, which would have given us the lead

those are the breaks......

we got one in Philadelphia on DeRosa’s HR that was foul. Probably don’t win that game w/o that call.

Agreed....

Font’s strikeout, D-Lee’s error…..those things happen….Don’t know what the hell Theriot was thinking in that spot…

no....

Fontenot striking out in the 8th w/ bases loaded & 1 out. If he its a sac fly, fielders choice, etc…anything that scores a run….hell, make contact…....and we go ahead, that leaves Marmol in the 8th, Wood in the 9th, not Howry. Not to say Wood gets it done, but I have much, MUCH more confidence in Wood than Howry.

The Fontenot play was probably the most damaging...

...but Fontenot was at the plate; he had to do something, and even the best players will strike out in big spots sometimes.

Theriot didn’t have to steal third; he took an unnecessary risk and it cost the team. I’d say the caught stealing was the worse play of the two.

Fontenot is weak

What this Cub team could really use coming off the bench is a Willie Harris type. Somebody who could help out in the outfield and even a little 2nd base while providing speed to the equation. Maybe Eric Patterson can be that guy???? Seriously, I wouldn’t mind us trying to swing a minor deal to land Willie Harris.

E-Patt is reportedly on the DL.

I absolutely agree that Fontenot doesn’t bring anything to this team – he can’t play a lot of positions, and he’s not any good at hitting, fielding or baserunning. A good bench player has to either be more well-rounded than Fontenot, or be a specialist. He’s neither.

Worse play of the two....yes.

That was a terrible decision. But “key to the game” was the Fontenot K, in my opinion b/c that changes the look of the 9th.

Agreed

No reason to do that when the meat of your order is due to bat.

This is why there's really no need to try and get your basestealers...

...at the top of the lineup. The value of a stolen base is actually higher at the bottom of the order, when the hitters behind you are less capable of driving you in on their own. But I digress.

Agree with that too...

But like said above, that gr double really, really hurt….but all that being said, such is baseball….and the season is a marathon, not a sprint….we’ll win lots of games like this before it’s all said and done….

Most disturbing trend of late is...

Even in our recent wins, we are leaving a lot of men on base. Too many. Team has looked pretty solid. Bob needs to get the work in. I think Lou wants to get his confidence back up. I know this did not help, but the pen has been pretty taxed, not a lot of other options. Mike, yah, I don’t really like Mike. Think I would have wanted Cintron out there in his place. too bad that did not work out. As posted above, if we get 2 of 3, I will be more than happy with that.

Hate the Mike...

Forgot about Cintron…wish that would of worked out too…

Nobody likes to lose but

this is baseball. You’re going to lose 60 games for sure so don’t go crazy. When the games start tomorrow, we’ll be in 1st place. Howry didn’t throw a bad pitch. He had him 0-2 and threw a fastball high and outside. Any good hitter would not have swung at it. Yes, we left alot of guys on base tonight but we were on a pace to score 994 runs this season, before the game. That’s not going to happen. Did anyone else notice the Cubs watching them celebrate their 8-16 record. They didn’t look happy. I think we crush them tomorrow.

when...

you’re 7-15, you have a right to celebrate like that. It was a big win for them. They were hardly trying to rub it in the Cubs faces.

Missed his spot.......

Soto was setting up for a ball down and in…...... he missed his spot by about the same distance the ball traveled…..about a mile…

Now I know why

there are so many boo birds at Wrigley. Some of you think they have to win every game. You should learn to enjoy the ride. I have alot of White Sox fans that didn’t even enjoy their WS run because every day the sky was falling. The Cards blew a 2-0 lead in the ninth tonight. The Brewers lost in extra innings. News flash, good teams lose games. Good night.
