Wow, what a great catch, amazing, best I've ever seen, gosh, that was great, wonderful, terrific
PLEASE SHOW IT! Jeez! I was in the other room and missed it and it’s driving me crazy how they’re talking about how wonderful it is but NOT SHOWING THE REPLAY. Wake up, Comcast Sports Net!
Theriot had the right idea. If that was a strike, or anywhere near the plate, Lee would have put the bat on it. He was staying out of the double play. Horrible call behind the plate. Umpire was blinded by the fact the catcher stood up to throw to second.
i’m just following on gameday and they just posted the video of it. I didn’t realize a-ram would have scored if it didn’t bounce off the stands. that sucks.
Yeah, that is a strange play I think. I guess we bring in Murton and make them take the LOOGY out, with DeRo moving to second? That sounds good I guess, at first I thought it meant a fontenot PH for demp.
Yeah, that would be useful, although you’d have to think for a decent switch hitter to be a bench player, they’d pretty much have to be Ward-level in the field or worse.
...we have the heart of the order in the 9th, but jeez if we go extras, I’m not liking the fact we have to rely on Marquis and Z to pinch hit (after Felix)
gameday needs a different color ball for Outs and Runs/Hits, I get excited when i click back and see that blue ball, which i guess is the only time i like blue balls.
DeRo’s a better LF than Murton (with a much better arm) and a much better 2B than Fontenot. As versatile as he is, the one thing he can’t do is play two positions at the same time.
...so you tell me. DeRosa, probably. Maybe Theriot. Or Johnson. Murton has the most catching experience besides our actual catcher, but apparently Lou thinks Murton is the right-handed Daryle Ward.
In 63 major league games over four seasons with the New York Yankees and San Diego Padres, Nieves is hitting .161 with 11 RBI. He could be cut as soon as Lo Duca is healthy
Don’t give a shit? The chips didnt fall the way they have 15 other times this year. We will get back at them tomorrow. Maybe the fact that we have been in three cities, in three times zones, in three days may have something to do with the bats going a little cold. Not giving a shit is way off.
I just remember a time when nut jobs, who think a loss in April will cause a tail-spin to occur, were the exception to visitors on this site, not the norm.
LOU! 4 batters in 2 at bats?! why pinch hit for the on-fire ronny cedeno, who has been nothing but clutch lately?!!!!! FONTENOT – i would rather have his doppleganger mickey morandini, and i HATED mickey morandini.
and then howry…STUNNING. i am sorry – the loss is no big deal we are fine but the INEPTITUDE of that 8th inning all that sh1t for ONE RUN terrible terrible moves F THAT SHIZ
I didn’t like how quickly he burned through the bench… but it turned out not to matter. He got two left-right matchups in a critical situation, and in the end the short bench wasn’t the difference in the game.
He probably figured getting the matchups he wanted for those two hitters was likely to have a bigger impact on the game than having a short bench would. It’s hard to know the numbers on that, but I wouldn’t be surprised if, doing the math, using four batters there wasn’t a bad move in itself. What I might have done differently: burn Fonty or Pie instead of Ward to get Murton up (Lou used Pie this way in a game when Pie was really struggling, and I think if I were the opposing manager I would have just let Pie face the righty, but he ended up playing along), and then used Ward straight-up against their lefty, who sounded on the radio like he couldn’t throw a strike to save his life.
just lettin a little out – maybe i wasn’t clear enough – we are fine, lou’s been great this year, teams been great. sorry it maybe came off too strong, but i can take a loss and i trust these guys
The ballclub has stopped hitting, and when you’re not hitting it puts a lot of pressure on the pitchers.
Putting in Howry with a game on the line is equivalent to taking out all your starters in a basketball game, you have thrown in the towel. The guy is simply a mop up pitcher at best. And yet, Lou stubbornly continues to put him in games like this. I guess he doesn’t mind losing these kind of games.
the hitting was just bad. The one problem is Howry. He always starts off slow but he shouldn’t be put into these situations if he has been struggling..
Cubs get off to a 32-23 start going into June…they lose a Friday game to the White Sox…it’s OK, only one game…they get swept…it’s OK, just one series…next thing you know they go 20-50…and I suppose that’s OK?
Our “stud” shortstop’s groin ripped off the bone, Wood, Prior, and a host of others were hurt or sucked. We are fine. We are playing good enough to win every ball game. Nieves of the world happen.
Fontenot is ok, but I have never had confidence in Howry, even when he was pitching relatively well a couple of years ago, he gives up way too many home runs, especially in crucial situations.
Howry needs to be used strictly in mop up until:
1) He gets over his “slow start.” 2) They can get someone else to take his place.
But talking about going 20-50 at this point is absurd. You’re being irrational and quite frankly, you sound like you’ve never watched a full season of baseball in your life. There are ups and downs; it’s 162 games, fer chrissakes.
realize that a team can’t win them all. We have the second best record in baseball. Guy hit a pitch out of the zone out of the park. Props to him. We missed opportunities. It happens.
As much as the Cubs should beat the Nationals, even bad teams will get one or two on good ones. Hopefully they’ll right the ship and take the next two games.
I hate losing, and anyone on this thread that thinks it’s ok simply because it’s April, don’t know baseball. These wins and losses do count in September! We may look back and curse this loss.
Be that as it may, I am not really bothered by these losses, because our starting pitching is looking real good. The bullpen looks a little shakey, but hopefully that will work itself out as time goes on.
The hitting will be there, this team is too good not to hit. My worry has always been the pitching, and so far it’s been pretty darn good.
Fontenot striking out in the 8th w/ bases loaded & 1 out. If he its a sac fly, fielders choice, etc…anything that scores a run….hell, make contact…....and we go ahead, that leaves Marmol in the 8th, Wood in the 9th, not Howry. Not to say Wood gets it done, but I have much, MUCH more confidence in Wood than Howry.
What this Cub team could really use coming off the bench is a Willie Harris type. Somebody who could help out in the outfield and even a little 2nd base while providing speed to the equation. Maybe Eric Patterson can be that guy???? Seriously, I wouldn’t mind us trying to swing a minor deal to land Willie Harris.
I absolutely agree that Fontenot doesn’t bring anything to this team – he can’t play a lot of positions, and he’s not any good at hitting, fielding or baserunning. A good bench player has to either be more well-rounded than Fontenot, or be a specialist. He’s neither.
This is why there's really no need to try and get your basestealers...
...at the top of the lineup. The value of a stolen base is actually higher at the bottom of the order, when the hitters behind you are less capable of driving you in on their own. But I digress.
But like said above, that gr double really, really hurt….but all that being said, such is baseball….and the season is a marathon, not a sprint….we’ll win lots of games like this before it’s all said and done….
Even in our recent wins, we are leaving a lot of men on base. Too many. Team has looked pretty solid. Bob needs to get the work in. I think Lou wants to get his confidence back up. I know this did not help, but the pen has been pretty taxed, not a lot of other options. Mike, yah, I don’t really like Mike. Think I would have wanted Cintron out there in his place. too bad that did not work out. As posted above, if we get 2 of 3, I will be more than happy with that.
this is baseball. You’re going to lose 60 games for sure so don’t go crazy. When the games start tomorrow, we’ll be in 1st place. Howry didn’t throw a bad pitch. He had him 0-2 and threw a fastball high and outside. Any good hitter would not have swung at it. Yes, we left alot of guys on base tonight but we were on a pace to score 994 runs this season, before the game. That’s not going to happen. Did anyone else notice the Cubs watching them celebrate their 8-16 record. They didn’t look happy. I think we crush them tomorrow.
there are so many boo birds at Wrigley. Some of you think they have to win every game. You should learn to enjoy the ride. I have alot of White Sox fans that didn’t even enjoy their WS run because every day the sky was falling. The Cards blew a 2-0 lead in the ninth tonight. The Brewers lost in extra innings. News flash, good teams lose games. Good night.
good game so far

Put a helmet on Reed while he's out there in center.
Could have broken his skull on that catch.
BlueSox - April 25, 2008
That's what I initially thought
When he was sliding I was like “Oh nooo” and then he got up and I was like “OMGYES!!!”
bluebythebook - April 25, 2008
Did you
see the bill of his hat? And Kerry Wood in the pen watching it happen right in front of him…priceless.
sue369 - April 25, 2008
Yeah!
I noticed that too. And yes, Wood and the rest of the bullpen were priceless!
bluebythebook - April 25, 2008
Yeah, my heart was in my throat for second there.

Canseco's Roid Party - April 25, 2008
At this point it's really not his fault that he's bad at baseball.
It’s Lou’s fault for running him out there so often.
cwyers - April 25, 2008
Agreed.
DeRoMyHero - April 25, 2008
yeah, should have gone with Z there, speaking of a switch hitter on the bench.
Canseco's Roid Party - April 25, 2008
still think
pie would have been better in that spot, he’s been making contact with the ball

"If theres any justice in the baseball world"
Love it
GoCubbies34 - April 25, 2008
"If there's any justice in the baseball world, Reed Johnson will get a big hit and make that catch really mean something tonight."
Huh?
northsider - April 25, 2008
There is no justice in the baseball world.
Johnson grounds out 6-3.
northsider - April 25, 2008
damnit damnit damnit
the bench is NOW depleted

Horrible Execution
Can’t be leaving the bases loaded
SecondSon - April 25, 2008
noo
that never happens to us…....bases loaded is almost a kiss of death
bheidge - April 25, 2008
not this inning...
Bump Bailey - April 25, 2008
that was a failure
in hindsight Lou should have kept Cedeno in, that started a domino effect, but atleast we tied it
tahazen - April 25, 2008
I think Lou overplayed that one...
...but then again he knows a little more than I do.
JB 23 - April 25, 2008
Should've Squeezed
SecondSon - April 25, 2008
Lou
Pulled a LaRussa there…
Bump Bailey - April 25, 2008
Lou definitely overplayed that. Bad.
Canseco's Roid Party - April 25, 2008
ugh....
c’mon carlos!!
mrbubs - April 25, 2008
at least...
...we have the heart of the order in the 9th, but jeez if we go extras, I’m not liking the fact we have to rely on Marquis and Z to pinch hit (after Felix)
carmen_fanzone - April 25, 2008
Who is this reliever we brought in? New guy from the minors? I have never seen him pitch before! At least not in the past day or so.
Canseco's Roid Party - April 25, 2008
:)

why PHers don’t choke up on the bat and just try to meet the ball – after all they’re supposed to make contact first and foremost.
SecondSon - April 25, 2008
I do not know why you said White Castle, but I probably should go there in a little bit.
Canseco's Roid Party - April 25, 2008

BlueSox - April 25, 2008

Bump Bailey - April 25, 2008
AHHHHHHHHHHHH
and i was just going to make fun of the awful “fontenot as a defensive sub” portion of that mess. and he had to go and prove me right.
Canseco's Roid Party - April 25, 2008
He wants to be

pfd89 - April 25, 2008
Why would anyone want that...

Could someone with more baseball knowledge than me please explain??
DeRoMyHero - April 25, 2008
E Patt on the DL
right now…
cozmotaylor123 - April 25, 2008
Good explanation, thanks.
DeRoMyHero - April 25, 2008
E-Patt wasn't on the DL at the end of spring training.
I dunno. Fontenot had a good month? Lou doesn’t want to break up the LSU double play combo? Beats me.

gameday needs a different color ball for Outs and Runs/Hits, I get excited when i click back and see that blue ball, which i guess is the only time i like blue balls.
Canseco's Roid Party - April 25, 2008
LMAO
BlueSox - April 25, 2008
Can someone tell me why in the sam hell...
...Murton is back on the bench, DeRosa’s still in left, and Fontenot is playing the field? Because I don’t get it.
cwyers - April 25, 2008
From your keyboard to Lou's ears.
BlueSox - April 25, 2008
Well
DeRo’s a better LF than Murton (with a much better arm) and a much better 2B than Fontenot. As versatile as he is, the one thing he can’t do is play two positions at the same time.
DeRoMyHero - April 25, 2008
However...
I would say second base is a more important defensive position than left field.
This way the pitcher’s spot comes up one place earlier as well.
I wonder who the emergency catcher is now that Blanco is out.
aldimond - April 25, 2008
Pie's the only player left...
...so you tell me. DeRosa, probably. Maybe Theriot. Or Johnson. Murton has the most catching experience besides our actual catcher, but apparently Lou thinks Murton is the right-handed Daryle Ward.
cwyers - April 25, 2008
Well it's moot now
But I would LMAO at Big Z going out behind the plate.
(Obviously there are good reasons not to have your best pitcher go in as a catcher… I wonder if Wuertz or Howry can catch…)
aldimond - April 25, 2008
DeRo was Bobby Cox's emergency catcher,
but that was one torn ACL ago.
DeRoMyHero - April 25, 2008
DeRo
I believe…

i thought Howry wasn't to be trusted in a close game?
is that rule back on now?
dogcatratcheese - April 25, 2008
Yet ANOTHER Patented Howry Disaster
So…why did Lou replace Marmol?
JFCubFan - April 25, 2008
Marmol...
...didn’t pitch well tonight either
carmen_fanzone - April 25, 2008
Because he doesn't want
Marmol’s arm to fall off by July?
One of those games, folks. Oh, well.
Not Bruce Froemming - April 25, 2008
Cuz Marmol's arm is gonna pull a Wood
if they use him this often. Soto had the glove down and in, and Howry threw it up and over. Bad pitch. Happens everybody. It happens.
louslovechild - April 25, 2008
awwwww man...

bheidge - April 25, 2008
Howry gives up a HR to a CAREER .180 HITTER!
Chanman25 - April 25, 2008
Who was hitting .317
Coming into this game.
Not Bruce Froemming - April 25, 2008
Yes, I'm sure that this was the season...
...that a 30-year-old backup catcher has put it all together and become good at hitting baseballs.
cwyers - April 25, 2008
Were you watching the game?
Didn’t look to me like that ball was anywhere near going out. Maybe a bloop hit.
The sun’s coming up tomorrow, last I heard.
Not Bruce Froemming - April 25, 2008
No, actually, I'm at work.
But I don’t see the point of brining up Nieves’ .317 batting average; given his career it seems entirely irrelevant.
cwyers - April 25, 2008
It's relevant if he's hitting well now
If Pie homers to win a game, does his weak career batting average matter?
Not Bruce Froemming - April 25, 2008
I trust you understand the difference...
...between a 23-year-old with less than 250 career plate appearances and a 30-year-old backup catcher.
cwyers - April 25, 2008
I trust you understand
baseball.
Not Bruce Froemming - April 25, 2008
that might be the funniest post I have ever read.
JB 23 - April 25, 2008
Game, set, and match!!
northsider - April 25, 2008
Uh, yeah.
I just think that trying to judge a 30-year-old player off of 21-plate-appearances can be misleading. I’m sorry that this offends you.
cwyers - April 25, 2008
agreed completely with this statement
Chanman25 - April 25, 2008
W Nieves
In 63 major league games over four seasons with the New York Yankees and San Diego Padres, Nieves is hitting .161 with 11 RBI. He could be cut as soon as Lo Duca is healthy
bheidge - April 25, 2008
missed your in game posts when the Cubs were on fire...
...crept back in now. Hmmmm
JB 23 - April 25, 2008
what?
bheidge - April 25, 2008
AWFUL
Cubs need to take a long look in the mirror after this one.
SecondSon - April 25, 2008

Rudey - April 25, 2008
Not counting Johnson
of course
Rudey - April 25, 2008
Are you out of your mind?
Don’t give a shit? The chips didnt fall the way they have 15 other times this year. We will get back at them tomorrow. Maybe the fact that we have been in three cities, in three times zones, in three days may have something to do with the bats going a little cold. Not giving a shit is way off.
louslovechild - April 25, 2008
we
can just say they were tired, always a good out
Rudey - April 25, 2008
We'll get

of long losing streaks start this way….
SecondSon - April 25, 2008
With a loss?
True. That is how most losing streaks start.
Kansas25 - April 25, 2008
No, Genius
With stupid games like this, that the Cubs should’ve won but didn’t because of squandered oppotunities.
SecondSon - April 25, 2008
You're right.
We should go 162-0. Period.
Kansas25 - April 25, 2008
Straw Man
SecondSon - April 25, 2008
Not particularly...
In losses, there will ALWAYS be squandered opportunities.

Maybe you don’t care, but pardon the rest of us who do.
SecondSon - April 25, 2008
You seem to

sue369 - April 25, 2008
I care
But if I got this wound up after every loss, I wouldn’t bother watching baseball, because it wouldn’t be any fun.
Not Bruce Froemming - April 25, 2008
Speaking of wound up...
Pot, calling Kettle.
BlueSox - April 25, 2008
Huh?
Not Bruce Froemming - April 25, 2008
I am certain you will be the first to go nuts when they win tomorrow.
Do you watch baseball?
louslovechild - April 25, 2008
Do You?
SecondSon - April 25, 2008
Everyday
I just remember a time when nut jobs, who think a loss in April will cause a tail-spin to occur, were the exception to visitors on this site, not the norm.
louslovechild - April 25, 2008
most of this is on
CubbyBlues - April 25, 2008
take it EASY there, t1ger!! BREATHE! take a DEEP breath!!!!!
northsider - April 25, 2008
On Lou?
I didn’t like how quickly he burned through the bench… but it turned out not to matter. He got two left-right matchups in a critical situation, and in the end the short bench wasn’t the difference in the game.
He probably figured getting the matchups he wanted for those two hitters was likely to have a bigger impact on the game than having a short bench would. It’s hard to know the numbers on that, but I wouldn’t be surprised if, doing the math, using four batters there wasn’t a bad move in itself. What I might have done differently: burn Fonty or Pie instead of Ward to get Murton up (Lou used Pie this way in a game when Pie was really struggling, and I think if I were the opposing manager I would have just let Pie face the righty, but he ended up playing along), and then used Ward straight-up against their lefty, who sounded on the radio like he couldn’t throw a strike to save his life.
aldimond - April 25, 2008
Good point...
Ward is our stud pinch hitter…..If he’s announced, he hits if it’s up to me. He knows how to take a walk too….
Bump Bailey - April 25, 2008
good lord
am I in a daycare center? temper tantrums
bheidge - April 25, 2008
hey hey
just lettin a little out – maybe i wasn’t clear enough – we are fine, lou’s been great this year, teams been great. sorry it maybe came off too strong, but i can take a loss and i trust these guys
CubbyBlues - April 25, 2008
No kidding!
sue369 - April 25, 2008
Fukudome
Along with good plate discipline, he needs to impart a sense of shame and disappointment unto his teammates when they lose like this.
SecondSon - April 25, 2008
that was
one point in my above rant and i got roasted – but the other point was that we GOT this year even if we hit a few tiny bumps
CubbyBlues - April 25, 2008
Howry
The ballclub has stopped hitting, and when you’re not hitting it puts a lot of pressure on the pitchers.
Putting in Howry with a game on the line is equivalent to taking out all your starters in a basketball game, you have thrown in the towel. The guy is simply a mop up pitcher at best.
And yet, Lou stubbornly continues to put him in games like this. I guess he doesn’t mind losing these kind of games.
Mr W - April 25, 2008
nothing is wrong tonight, except for one thing
the hitting was just bad. The one problem is Howry. He always starts off slow but he shouldn’t be put into these situations if he has been struggling..
Chanman25 - April 25, 2008
Nieves......
hits a pitch that:
1) eye level
2) more than 6 inches off the plate
Unbelieveable…...
Kearns was hitting .192 going into that at bat….FYI
cubbie08 - April 25, 2008
this game
is very random – breaks, flukes, whatever. this team, i think, knows how to win and will get after it big time tomorrow
CubbyBlues - April 25, 2008
Yep
sue369 - April 25, 2008
1999
Cubs get off to a 32-23 start going into June…they lose a Friday game to the White Sox…it’s OK, only one game…they get swept…it’s OK, just one series…next thing you know they go 20-50…and I suppose that’s OK?
SecondSon - April 25, 2008
Then you should follow some other team
or maybe not watch baseball at all. Good heavens, I thought a few victories would thin out the ledge jumpers, but not all of them, it appears.
Not Bruce Froemming - April 25, 2008
Good teams...
don’t lose. They just don’t. A bad team in 1999 once lost a game on a Friday. They ended up being bad.
Kansas25 - April 25, 2008
Maybe another reason could be.....
Our “stud” shortstop’s groin ripped off the bone, Wood, Prior, and a host of others were hurt or sucked. We are fine. We are playing good enough to win every ball game. Nieves of the world happen.
louslovechild - April 25, 2008
Good God.
Do us all a favor and go to bed. You are just ridiculous.
sue369 - April 25, 2008
Even with tettible hitting Lou made some terrible decisions.
Fontenot and Howry?
Do you wanna lose?
Rudey - April 25, 2008
Fontenot and Howry
Fontenot is ok, but I have never had confidence in Howry, even when he was pitching relatively well a couple of years ago, he gives up way too many home runs, especially in crucial situations.
Howry needs to be used strictly in mop up until:
1) He gets over his “slow start.”
2) They can get someone else to take his place.
Mr W - April 25, 2008
Bad ballgame against brutal ballclub
Bob Howry is human batting practice this April. Brutal.
Mike Fontenot is even less useful than Matt Murton. He’s a butcher around 2nd base. Please for the love of God ship him back to Triple A tomorrow.
Carlos Marmol? His arm is going to fall off by June 1st at this rate.
Ryan Dempster? Again, a heckuva performance on a night when his stuff was less than good.
MDBNIU - April 25, 2008
agreed with all statements
Howry is always like this this time of year apparently
Fontenot seems lost at the plate. I guess Patterson should be recalled soon.
Marmol is being overused
Chanman25 - April 25, 2008
Is Losing OK?
I’m frankly surprised you people are fine with losing, especially winnable ball games.
SecondSon - April 25, 2008
we aren't fine with losing
its just that you can’t continue to bitch about it and hope it changes.
Chanman25 - April 25, 2008
You win some
you lose some. They lost last night and they lost tonight. Before last night they won 6 in a row. Jesus Christ.
sue369 - April 25, 2008
agreed
you can’t win them all
Chanman25 - April 25, 2008
Nobody's okay with losing.
But talking about going 20-50 at this point is absurd. You’re being irrational and quite frankly, you sound like you’ve never watched a full season of baseball in your life. There are ups and downs; it’s 162 games, fer chrissakes.
cwyers - April 25, 2008
teams go on skids during seasons
its common for teams to lose TWO in a row..
Chanman25 - April 25, 2008
We differ on some things
but I’m with you 100 percent on this. Good post.
Not Bruce Froemming - April 25, 2008
Get the next 2 in the series.......
which is very, very possible looking at the matchups and it would be a 5-2 week, which I’m sure EVERYONE would agree is a success.
cubbie08 - April 25, 2008
Most level-headed baseball fans...
realize that a team can’t win them all. We have the second best record in baseball. Guy hit a pitch out of the zone out of the park. Props to him. We missed opportunities. It happens.
Kansas25 - April 25, 2008
Exactly....
not like Howry threw him a meat ball that he jacked out of the park.
cubbie08 - April 25, 2008
I agree
As much as the Cubs should beat the Nationals, even bad teams will get one or two on good ones. Hopefully they’ll right the ship and take the next two games.
NOLA_Cub_Fan - April 25, 2008
We lost the first two of the season
then went on to win 6 of the next 7. Everyone relax. Please.
BigJohnAZ - April 25, 2008
Good sign
I hate losing, and anyone on this thread that thinks it’s ok simply because it’s April, don’t know baseball. These wins and losses do count in September! We may look back and curse this loss.
Be that as it may, I am not really bothered by these losses, because our starting pitching is looking real good. The bullpen looks a little shakey, but hopefully that will work itself out as time goes on.
The hitting will be there, this team is too good not to hit. My worry has always been the pitching, and so far it’s been pretty darn good.

Key to the game....
Theriot getting thrown out at 3rd base. That was a kick in the nuts to momentum in my view.
Oh well, go get them tomorrow.
MDBNIU - April 25, 2008
yeah
or that ground rule double, which would have given us the lead
Chanman25 - April 25, 2008
those are the breaks......
we got one in Philadelphia on DeRosa’s HR that was foul. Probably don’t win that game w/o that call.
cubbie08 - April 25, 2008
Agreed....
Font’s strikeout, D-Lee’s error…..those things happen….Don’t know what the hell Theriot was thinking in that spot…
Bump Bailey - April 25, 2008
no....
Fontenot striking out in the 8th w/ bases loaded & 1 out. If he its a sac fly, fielders choice, etc…anything that scores a run….hell, make contact…....and we go ahead, that leaves Marmol in the 8th, Wood in the 9th, not Howry. Not to say Wood gets it done, but I have much, MUCH more confidence in Wood than Howry.
cubbie08 - April 25, 2008
The Fontenot play was probably the most damaging...
...but Fontenot was at the plate; he had to do something, and even the best players will strike out in big spots sometimes.
Theriot didn’t have to steal third; he took an unnecessary risk and it cost the team. I’d say the caught stealing was the worse play of the two.
cwyers - April 25, 2008
Fontenot is weak
What this Cub team could really use coming off the bench is a Willie Harris type. Somebody who could help out in the outfield and even a little 2nd base while providing speed to the equation. Maybe Eric Patterson can be that guy???? Seriously, I wouldn’t mind us trying to swing a minor deal to land Willie Harris.
MDBNIU - April 25, 2008
E-Patt is reportedly on the DL.
I absolutely agree that Fontenot doesn’t bring anything to this team – he can’t play a lot of positions, and he’s not any good at hitting, fielding or baserunning. A good bench player has to either be more well-rounded than Fontenot, or be a specialist. He’s neither.
cwyers - April 25, 2008
Worse play of the two....yes.
That was a terrible decision. But “key to the game” was the Fontenot K, in my opinion b/c that changes the look of the 9th.
cubbie08 - April 25, 2008
Agreed
No reason to do that when the meat of your order is due to bat.
Not Bruce Froemming - April 25, 2008
This is why there's really no need to try and get your basestealers...
...at the top of the lineup. The value of a stolen base is actually higher at the bottom of the order, when the hitters behind you are less capable of driving you in on their own. But I digress.

Agree with that too...
But like said above, that gr double really, really hurt….but all that being said, such is baseball….and the season is a marathon, not a sprint….we’ll win lots of games like this before it’s all said and done….
Bump Bailey - April 25, 2008
DAMN IT!
Keystone80435 - April 25, 2008
Most disturbing trend of late is...
Cubskingdom - April 25, 2008
Hate the Mike...
Forgot about Cintron…wish that would of worked out too…
Bump Bailey - April 25, 2008
Nobody likes to lose but
this is baseball.
Rick B - April 25, 2008
when...
you’re 7-15, you have a right to celebrate like that. It was a big win for them. They were hardly trying to rub it in the Cubs faces.
carmen_fanzone - April 26, 2008
Missed his spot.......
Soto was setting up for a ball down and in…...... he missed his spot by about the same distance the ball traveled…..about a mile…
James031 - April 26, 2008
Now I know why
there are so many boo birds at Wrigley. Good night.
