that's this team so far.....incredible amount of unsound, bonehead play....do these guys think it is still spring training??? Why oh why does this team struggle against this crap Pirate team????
The Cubs have now used up their quota of errors, passed balls, missed bunts, and misjudged fly balls for the entire road trip. They've gotten everything out of their system today.
Win this one in extras, and the rest of the trip will be great!
...that Soriano needs fastballs, he strikes out on a lot of them as well. He also hits a lot of homeruns on hanging breaking balls, so I think that talk is a bit overated in regards to him.
sure he's had some errors at the beginning of 2008, but it's early and his ST was cut short. Normally he's a very versatile and smart defender. That being said, he's an overpaid hacker at the plate who chokes in crunch time.
Well....that sucked ....this game feels like another one
of those early 2007 games....super frustrating as the other team tries to hand you the win and your team says "No thanks"....ARam and Sori are sucking big donkey b!@!s so far this year....
...or is it looking very similar to the Cubs start in 07? Last year they blew several games early because they left a bunch of scoring opportunities on the table, and clearly lacked a "killer instinct".
Let's hope it doesn't last as long as it did last year.
moving runners over for example.....it is ridiculous....it makes me sick to my tummy.......execute you fools!!!! Maybe it is time for them to learn Japanese so Kosuke can teach them how to play baseball the right way.....
Soriano bunting, I don't care who he is, he's been in a major slum and Theriot probably scores on that Ward grounder to short. Soriano is just so frustrating to watch
The Cubs seem tight. Lee and Ramy were taking good pitches waiting for a perfect pitch. On DeRo's last 2 ABs, it seemed more like he was trying to avoid a GIDP than thinking about getting a hit. The pitchers are nibbling, trying to avoid contact.
To me, that's on Lou. They seem to be feeling more pressure than usual. He has to find a way to help guys relax and be aggressive.
I have been listening all day at work, and this is just unbelievable. How could they possibly cough up a 7-0 lead. Ridiculous. I didn't see the Lee at bat but he really needed to be up there just looking to drive the ball in the air somewhere.
Brenly has started to fire on Soriano the last few days. And for good reason. His at bats and performance are horrific. YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO WINCE EVERYTIME YOUR $136 MILLION INVESTMENT COMES TO BAT.
But said these guys need to learn how to hit the ball to the right side instead of trying to hit homeruns. Let the guy behind you be a hero. Fundamentals, etc.
Soriano will still be more of a liability than an asset
His terrible plate approach is just so unbearable to watch, he just doesn't play fundamental baseball, a perfect example is that last at bat he had in the 10th
because they'd be putting the runner in scoring position for the bottom of the order then Leiber, with no real pinch hitting options, at the very least fukudome was running and dero hit to the right side it cant work perfectly everytime but thats not the worst decision this game
:D It's baseball, there's going to be good games and there going to be bad games. Bad plays are as apart of the game as good plays. Players are human, there going to have some streaks, both positive and negative. I'm happy I'm enjoying more than 9 innings of ball today.
Ron is a mess today. It's got to get old if you are Pat Hughes and have to carry 99% of the load day after day. He's a saint for his willingness to hang in there with Ron.
yep, Santo is a great Cub, seems to be a decent guy, but is an awful announcer. After he'd been there for a few years, he was almost competent. Not any more.
Ryan Theriot proves his value this inning. The kid is a ballplayer. He might not be everyday material but I'll take him 100 times out of 100 over a Felix Pie type any day of the week.
and all the english - kanji translation websites show a really small picture. This one was the only bigger one I could find. I'd appreciate a larger, cleaner "katsu" if you have it.
How in the world you can have that type of AB against a rule 5 pitcher. Inexecusable, and I have had enough of Cedeno sailing balls in the stands.
Lieber in the rotation please.
Pie in AAA again, bring up Murton and move on.
C'mon Lieber!
Lets get to extras!!!

Any pitcher that gives him anything decent to hit is an idiot.
The guy gets himself out everytime by hacking at garbage.
CubsBall2202 - April 7, 2008

then is all forgiven?

That play by D Lee was awesome....
I loved how fired up he was when they got that 3rd out...
JB 23 - April 7, 2008
Okay that was worse than the Cubs today...
how did that bunt even happen without anyone else in Pittsburgh knowing about it???
razzpunk - April 7, 2008
One word...
D-Lee. That play had no shot. it was a bad bunt...hit too sharpy to Lee.
cubsonWGN4ever - April 7, 2008

RightFieldSucks - April 7, 2008
Hopefully he can produce here for the $136 million he is getting paid.
CubsBall2202 - April 7, 2008
Here's where Soriano is maddening.
It's all or nothing. Can't bunt, or won't bunt. Let's hope he crushes one.
I'd also like to see Theriot try to steal.
buckmulligan - April 7, 2008
Okay...lead off man to start the inning twice in a row now...
can we take advantage???? The Sweet Swinging (and missing) Soriano will no doubt advance the runner.....come on Cubs....

does anyone else think the pirates catcher's gear looks like this?
GarlicFryCubFan - April 7, 2008

I have it all figured out
The Cubs have now used up their quota of errors, passed balls, missed bunts, and misjudged fly balls for the entire road trip. They've gotten everything out of their system today.
Win this one in extras, and the rest of the trip will be great!

Way to play team baseball Soriano....
I am starting to hate that guy...what a bum....but wait DWard is here to save the day!!!

IowaCubs- - April 7, 2008
He won't even hit the ball to the right side.
He is worthless in those situations.

Jayo525 - April 7, 2008

NittanyCub - April 7, 2008
You think Lou even tried to give him a bunt sign
I mean some of the blame needs to go to the manager in tha situation right?
INWes44 - April 7, 2008
He should hit Sori upside the head with a bat!!
Maybe then he'd give a rip about winning.
Itchy - April 7, 2008
Absolutely!!!!!!!!
I mean, if Soriano won't even hit the ball to the right side, pinch hit Ward for him in that spot.
buckmulligan - April 7, 2008
Bob took a few jabs at Sori's approach....or lack of one..
Ugh
JB 23 - April 7, 2008
Mark Derosa: actually a solid glove man...
sure he's had some errors at the beginning of 2008, but it's early and his ST was cut short. Normally he's a very versatile and smart defender. That being said, he's an overpaid hacker at the plate who chokes in crunch time.

of those early 2007 games....super frustrating as the other team tries to hand you the win and your team says "No thanks"....ARam and Sori are sucking big donkey b!@!s so far this year....
razzpunk - April 7, 2008
This team still has trouble getting a runner
in with anything but a basehit.
buckmulligan - April 7, 2008
Cubs STILL cannot execute
Can't move the runner over, can't hit to the other side, can't loft the ball into the outfield for a sac....it's the same bullcrap all over again.
MDBNIU - April 7, 2008
Amen!
Same crap as last year. They all want to hit HRs.
Itchy - April 7, 2008
Soriano and Ramirez are absolutely killing us
CubsBall2202 - April 7, 2008
Soriano is killing us
Ramirez is our best hitter who is in a slump. Soriano is a p.o.s. who absolutely kills this lineup when his guess hitting is in the zone.
MDBNIU - April 7, 2008
He really is hard to watch.
Non-stop flailing.
buckmulligan - April 7, 2008
Is it just me...
...or is it looking very similar to the Cubs start in 07? Last year they blew several games early because they left a bunch of scoring opportunities on the table, and clearly lacked a "killer instinct".
Let's hope it doesn't last as long as it did last year.
MPH73 - April 7, 2008
Forget it
It's not the Cubs day.
Itchy - April 7, 2008
two innings in a row we had RISP w/ less than 2 outs
and no runs. we don't deserve it.
RightFieldSucks - April 7, 2008
Different Year, Same Team
Can't get the runner home at third with less than two outs.
garyscottrules - April 7, 2008
Repeat of last year, we certainly don't look any different
CubsBall2202 - April 7, 2008
That will happen lot when you have a bunch of hackers
who strike out a lot. All they needed to do was put the ball in play. Couldn't even do that.
lemon20pie - April 7, 2008
Didn't have a choice there
Had to swing at that pitch after Lee's called 3rd.

RightFieldSucks - April 7, 2008
Again the fundamentals are killing us...
moving runners over for example.....it is ridiculous....it makes me sick to my tummy.......execute you fools!!!! Maybe it is time for them to learn Japanese so Kosuke can teach them how to play baseball the right way.....
razzpunk - April 7, 2008
I blame Steve Bartman!
vtcub - April 7, 2008
Yeah, the Cubs have played a crappy, sloppy game.
Win or lose, they have to start playing better baseball.
buckmulligan - April 7, 2008
Lou should've had
Soriano bunting, I don't care who he is, he's been in a major slum and Theriot probably scores on that Ward grounder to short. Soriano is just so frustrating to watch
Rezze21 - April 7, 2008
A major slum meaning
US Cellular Field?
vtcub - April 7, 2008
100% agree
RightFieldSucks - April 7, 2008
Looks like...
I'm staying at work a little longer...
CubsBullsBears - April 7, 2008
I blame the depleting ozone layer on this
NittanyCub - April 7, 2008
Gotta be...
Global warming wreaking its havoc
CubsBullsBears - April 7, 2008
really need to win this game today..
Can't let this one get away and let's go now! Cubs
blueivy - April 7, 2008
Nyjer Please!
santoswoodenlegs - April 7, 2008
if we get through this inning
fukudome up first! maybe he could just drive one deep
cubsmania - April 7, 2008
JMO
The Cubs seem tight. Lee and Ramy were taking good pitches waiting for a perfect pitch. On DeRo's last 2 ABs, it seemed more like he was trying to avoid a GIDP than thinking about getting a hit. The pitchers are nibbling, trying to avoid contact.
To me, that's on Lou. They seem to be feeling more pressure than usual. He has to find a way to help guys relax and be aggressive.
DeRoMyHero - April 7, 2008
Wow
I have been listening all day at work, and this is just unbelievable. How could they possibly cough up a 7-0 lead. Ridiculous. I didn't see the Lee at bat but he really needed to be up there just looking to drive the ball in the air somewhere.
rambler19 - April 7, 2008
Well...
... at least we have Lieber on the mound. He could easily go five innings.
Al Yellon - April 7, 2008
True that.
santoswoodenlegs - April 7, 2008
Yep
MDBNIU - April 7, 2008
He might have to
vtcub - April 7, 2008
Ya, I'm actually glad he's in the bullpen right now than in the rotation
If marquis were out there who knows what would happen
CubsBall2202 - April 7, 2008
The game would be over
CubsBullsBears - April 7, 2008
What the heck...
Let's play two!
CubsBullsBears - April 7, 2008
Game is now 4 hours old
JohnM - April 7, 2008
I blame Global Warming for this game.
Soriano almost lost that ball...he was worried about hitting the wall.
It's 5:32 here in DC and I'm still at work watching...when will it end? Good point is that Lieber is working fast.
zevkalman - April 7, 2008
I blame Al
Oh, I like to kid.
NittanyCub - April 7, 2008
I'll take it.
I have several errands to run. But I'm not leaving the house till this is over.
Al Yellon - April 7, 2008
yeah it's practically like a doubleheader
RightFieldSucks - April 7, 2008
6 unearned runs so far this year given up by the Cubs
and not moving runners over.....YUCK!!! Lou get on that please!!!
razzpunk - April 7, 2008
You can tell Brenly is fed up with Soriano.
Bob is right on it.
buckmulligan - April 7, 2008
Amen brother
Brenly has started to fire on Soriano the last few days. And for good reason. His at bats and performance are horrific. YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO WINCE EVERYTIME YOUR $136 MILLION INVESTMENT COMES TO BAT.
MDBNIU - April 7, 2008
I hope Soriano doesn't call up to the booth and complain about it.
santoswoodenlegs - April 7, 2008
He'll have to call Mercker...
For the number.
CubsBullsBears - April 7, 2008
He can get it when the Reds come to town.
That ought to be fun.
Al Yellon - April 7, 2008
Did he say...
Anything specific? Or just moans and groans?
CubsBullsBears - April 7, 2008
Didn't mention his name,
But said these guys need to learn how to hit the ball to the right side instead of trying to hit homeruns. Let the guy behind you be a hero. Fundamentals, etc.
buckmulligan - April 7, 2008
Well...
Soriano puts the "mental" in Fundamentals, that's for sure.
santoswoodenlegs - April 7, 2008
fantastic inning for lieber
very quick and efficient
COME ON FUKUDOME!!!!!!!!
grifdog - April 7, 2008
I agree.
Let's take bets on when he comes into the rotation.
zevkalman - April 7, 2008
lieber looks good
sure wish he was in the rotation
cubsmania - April 7, 2008
Lieber!!
Prediction: he'll be in the rotation soon.
Al Yellon - April 7, 2008
Hope so
But we need Philly or Anaheim to take Jason Marquis off our hands.
MDBNIU - April 7, 2008
I like Lieber
throws strikes quickly
fischisgod - April 7, 2008
BEAUTIFUL INNING

RightFieldSucks - April 7, 2008
Lets get 6 more Good work Lieber
PieFan08 - April 7, 2008
jeeze, Lieber just slammed the door
NittanyCub - April 7, 2008

WHEN HE JUST PROVED WHY WE WANT HIM IN THE BULLPEN
cubsonWGN4ever - April 7, 2008
FUKUDOME!!!
Lets go baby!!! Need a birthday win to kick off my night!
Lou In Blue - April 7, 2008
Put the eye to work.
buckmulligan - April 7, 2008

grifdog - April 7, 2008
Don't even THINK that.

Al Yellon - April 7, 2008
Lieber
I still dont know why we wasnt pitching when Lilly came out. Any ideas on this?
okiecubbie - April 7, 2008
I agree that this is the move that should have happened in the first place
Lieber has barely pitched so far this year....right?
cubsonWGN4ever - April 7, 2008
c'mon Fuke!
blueivy - April 7, 2008
Basehit FUK!!!!!
I love him
fischisgod - April 7, 2008
Fukudome
Is there anything he can't do?
grifdog - April 7, 2008
yeah - my taxes, unfortunately...
ballhawk - April 7, 2008
have you sent him your forms?
worth a shot
grifdog - April 7, 2008
The man...

blueivy - April 7, 2008
I love the way kosuke plays
If only the hacks on this team could learn from him
CubsBall2202 - April 7, 2008
Amen
MDBNIU - April 7, 2008
Incredible....let's get more Japanese players....
and dump our expensive leftfielder!!!
razzpunk - April 7, 2008
Fukudome
...pretty sure he flipped Soriano the bird in Japenese en route to first base...
MDBNIU - April 7, 2008
Fukudome gets on base so much..
because making outs brings dishonor on the house of Piniella.
santoswoodenlegs - April 7, 2008
THAT IS HOW YOU PLAY BASEBALL!
RightFieldSucks - April 7, 2008
This guy is ridiculous
What does he know that other players dont? He he reached Enlightenment?
NittanyCub - April 7, 2008
has*
NittanyCub - April 7, 2008
Pirates announcers say about Dome's AB:
"What an at-bat!"
zevkalman - April 7, 2008
Soriano should give up his salary to dome
CubsBall2202 - April 7, 2008
Or at least his suite.
Kornchex - April 7, 2008
Fukudome is the man!
Now BUNT him over, DeRo!!
Itchy - April 7, 2008
Bunting is for sissies...
men with beards hit the ball!
santoswoodenlegs - April 7, 2008
Can we sell Soriano to Japan??
MDBNIU - April 7, 2008
He already played there.
They sent him back.
(Kidding! Sort of.)
Al Yellon - April 7, 2008
Yeah, since that's
the best, logical, most awesomest thing to do with him right now.
NittanyCub - April 7, 2008
No bunt again????
razzpunk - April 7, 2008
Dome and Sinatro...
Are going to be best friends before the year is over. "Hey buddy, back again!?"
CubsBullsBears - April 7, 2008
Get him in scoring position
PieFan08 - April 7, 2008
He's really bothered by Dome
I love it.
grifdog - April 7, 2008
i wanna see a hit and run
RightFieldSucks - April 7, 2008
Haters!
Soriano will be fine. It's April 7. And Fukudome, he could stay this good, or pitchers may figure out how to play him.
AC 00 00 00 - April 7, 2008
Agreed
but lets not get negative with the new Japanese import eh?
Lou In Blue - April 7, 2008
iirc
Didn't he have a rough April last year too? Ryno used to suck in April too.
Kornchex - April 7, 2008
Soriano will still be more of a liability than an asset
His terrible plate approach is just so unbearable to watch, he just doesn't play fundamental baseball, a perfect example is that last at bat he had in the 10th
CubsBall2202 - April 7, 2008
IT'S ONLY A WEEK INTO BASEBALL, JESUS
ARE ALL YOU GUYS TAKING CRAZY PILLS?!
NittanyCub - April 7, 2008
He KILLS this offense
when he's in a bad patch. THAT is the problem.
MDBNIU - April 7, 2008
No,
baseball is only a week and a quarter long, obviously.
NittanyCub - April 7, 2008
Derosa looks off-balance.
He's a strikeout candidate right here.
buckmulligan - April 7, 2008
we should make fukudome our assistant hitting coach
grathanial - April 7, 2008
Christ!!! I can't believe we are not bunting!!!
God forbid we use fundamentals!!!
razzpunk - April 7, 2008
Brenly just said the same thing
fischisgod - April 7, 2008
Head scratcher
And DeRosa is good at doing the little things with the bat...
MDBNIU - April 7, 2008
Spring training...
Was not that long ago, this should be fresh in our minds. BUNT!
CubsBullsBears - April 7, 2008
No bunt.
Lieber's coming up, and no one on the bench but the backup C. No use throwing away DeRosa's at bat.
californiachicagoan - April 7, 2008
You don't want Lieber out of the game, but...
.... if it goes longer, they could use Marquis or even Zambrano to pinch-hit.
Al Yellon - April 7, 2008
Good point
MDBNIU - April 7, 2008
waste of an out there
Chanman25 - April 7, 2008
Don't move the runner over idiots!!!!!!
razzpunk - April 7, 2008
We have a chance with Soto.
buckmulligan - April 7, 2008
They are really bothered by Dome on 1st.
n/t
zevkalman - April 7, 2008
Stupid baseball!!
Dero must've talked Lou out of bunting
Itchy - April 7, 2008
What the hell...did Derosa get the signal from Soriano?
razzpunk - April 7, 2008
Z is probably petitioning for that now...
CubsBullsBears - April 7, 2008
Soto hit a home run please...
i need leave leave work.
digitalbenjamin - April 7, 2008
me too!
Mr Snrub - April 7, 2008
Me 3!
I missed my train already.
CubsBullsBears - April 7, 2008
they didnt try to bunt
because they'd be putting the runner in scoring position for the bottom of the order then Leiber, with no real pinch hitting options, at the very least fukudome was running and dero hit to the right side it cant work perfectly everytime but thats not the worst decision this game
INWes44 - April 7, 2008
ugh
soto hit that one pretty well
grifdog - April 7, 2008
What a stupid park
fischisgod - April 7, 2008

n/t
Al Yellon - April 7, 2008
don't question the Dome.
santoswoodenlegs - April 7, 2008
yea I agree, if it goes over CF head, he scores anyway....
JB 23 - April 7, 2008
Its feeling a bit tense in here no?
:D It's baseball, there's going to be good games and there going to be bad games. Bad plays are as apart of the game as good plays. Players are human, there going to have some streaks, both positive and negative. I'm happy I'm enjoying more than 9 innings of ball today.
Lou In Blue - April 7, 2008
yes
but when several of these bad plays and negative at bats come all in one game then that enjoyable
grathanial - April 7, 2008
*then that is not enjoyable
grathanial - April 7, 2008
another wasted opportunity
RightFieldSucks - April 7, 2008

Al Yellon - April 7, 2008
Fukudome's thought bubble
Japanese translation for "w-t-f."
MDBNIU - April 7, 2008
Well I guess we can just wasting lead off hits...
and I am sure Pittsburgh will let us score eventually right??? Man oh man we have had our chances and just don't wanna take the bull by the horns.....
razzpunk - April 7, 2008
We can still use Blanco as a PH
and even Marquis...
zevkalman - April 7, 2008
i've been working for most of the day,

MDBNIU - April 7, 2008

yep, Santo is a great Cub, seems to be a decent guy, but is an awful announcer. After he'd been there for a few years, he was almost competent. Not any more.
Shanghai Badger - April 7, 2008
I really hope someone asks Lou
about the non-bunts with Soriano and Derosa, especially Soriano. Elephant in the room.
buckmulligan - April 7, 2008
I'm sure Lou's response will start with something like this...
"Look.................*instert awkward pause*........."
CubsBullsBears - April 7, 2008
I can understand not bunting Soriano...
...but DeRosa puzzles me a tad. I know Lou doesn't want to burn up his pitchers, but there is an off day tomorrow.

Thank you Theriot and Ramirez
Ryan Theriot proves his value this inning. The kid is a ballplayer. He might not be everyday material but I'll take him 100 times out of 100 over a Felix Pie type any day of the week.
MDBNIU - April 7, 2008
The Key is - "He might not be everyday material"

razzpunk - April 7, 2008
Turning ugly...poor kid.
But the ump gave the pitcher that last strike....
zevkalman - April 7, 2008

He was in a good groove
CubsBall2202 - April 7, 2008

santoswoodenlegs - April 7, 2008
I will give you better one later
It's good calligraphy, but a bit hard to read....
dragonsfanatic - April 7, 2008
I had to get if off a website...
and all the english - kanji translation websites show a really small picture. This one was the only bigger one I could find. I'd appreciate a larger, cleaner "katsu" if you have it.
santoswoodenlegs - April 7, 2008
I will put better one
on game review post by Al later
dragonsfanatic - April 7, 2008
*bows*
santoswoodenlegs - April 7, 2008
and it put here
right here
dragonsfanatic - April 7, 2008
MVP
Jon Lieber. His ability to give us 3 good relief innings is why we were able to save Marmol for the 12th.
californiachicagoan - April 7, 2008
CUBS WINN
woooooooooooooo
KC in OK - April 7, 2008
Breathe everyone....Lieber you are the player of the game!!!
razzpunk - April 7, 2008

RightFieldSucks - April 7, 2008
I third that!
Here's a question to chew on....after seeing this, where do you want Lieber, the bullpen or the rotation? I vote the bullpen.
cubsonWGN4ever - April 7, 2008
Kosuke too.
Great job by him today, truly great.
CubsBall2202 - April 7, 2008

grathanial - April 7, 2008
I need a 12 pack of gin!
razzpunk - April 7, 2008
Nice to see the win today
Last year this game is probably a loss but nice to see we could pull it off today, I hope Santo is ok at least.
CubsBall2202 - April 7, 2008
Over .500 and now we roll!!!! That is the kind of game we
would have lost last year early....but it still had lingering tastes of last year....
razzpunk - April 7, 2008
Just got up and watched
Dome's 2 hits (in 3rd and 11th) on NHK morning news show.
No broadcasting of today's game here, but will watch highlight reel somewhere.
dragonsfanatic - April 7, 2008
The only highlights are the 3rd and 12th innings...
you don't want to see anything else.
santoswoodenlegs - April 7, 2008
hopely
as those news show follows *ONLY* on Dome's at bat or fielding. Nothing else.
dragonsfanatic - April 7, 2008
How many MLB games are they showing over there?
razzpunk - April 7, 2008
1-2 games on NHK satellite channel, 3 games on Sky PerfecTV per day
So 4-5 games total per day
dragonsfanatic - April 7, 2008
Wow that is better than when I lived over there in 2001...it was just Ichiro games
razzpunk - April 7, 2008
There are 16 Japanese players
in major and minor league out there this year...
dragonsfanatic - April 7, 2008
Today's on air
NHK : TB@NYY
Sky PerfecTV: SEA@BAL, SD@SF, CLE@LAA
dragonsfanatic - April 7, 2008
Isn't this the kind of game....
the Cubs just can't seem to win. This game gives me hope that the Cubs can have a better than solid season.
Is there really that many more posters than in the past, almost 2000 posts for this game? Last season I think I saw 750 once or twice.

Pie is not what we need in center
How in the world you can have that type of AB against a rule 5 pitcher. Inexecusable, and I have had enough of Cedeno sailing balls in the stands.
Lieber in the rotation please.
Pie in AAA again, bring up Murton and move on.

it was good to see them get the W
even if it was a terrible game. That being said it was nice to have a cubs game to listen to all afternoon and for most of the drive home.

Hey dragonsfanatic, a question for you -
do you know much about Fukudome's autograph signing habits? Like, does he sign often, does he answer mail, etc.?
