from Cardinals fans telling me how Edmonds is a washed up choke artist. I should be making fun of them about that, NOT VICE-VERSA! oh man, karma is a bit*h
Lilly had 4 really good innings and one really bad one, and did a good job of surviving what could have been the second really bad inning. Gotta look at the total package, not just the Ks.
It’s an ERA calculator that tries to see how a pitcher would perform with a neutral/average defense. The formula is:
((13HR+3BB-2*K)/IP)+3.2
It’s a quick-and-dirty way of looking at a pitcher’s results based upon the Three True Outcomes, based on the assumption that a pitcher doesn’t control how often a batted ball is turned into a out or becomes a hit.
I know sometimes things get out of hand in here...
...but at the same time, nobody’s spouting masses of obscenities or being downright unbearable, and people can go ahead and vent now and again.
I view this chat as a virtual bleachers or a sports bar – you want to go ahead and keep it to where people can come in and enjoy themselves, but you get a lot of in-the-moment reaction. And I think you can go overboard the other direction as well.
I was not venting. I’m very happy we’re winning. I was just pointing out that the 11 Ks aren’t the entire story. That’s why I was so annoyed by Not Bruce Froemming’s comment.
Sheesh. I wasn’t complaining. Just pointing out facts. You’re so wrapped up in attacking anyone who says anything remotely not positive that you have no concept of rational debate.
one of those crazy stats you read about when some guy is in the middle of a list that has Ruth, Mantle, DiMaggio, etc. on it. Like its a game to figure out which name doesn’t fit.
but I think its good to be cautious with our best pitching weapon. I know a win is a win, but San Diego’s offense sucks, trot out some of our other BP guys. I just think we should, in the early goings, save Marmol’s arm as much as possible.
0 for 4 tonight. Why not hit and run with the riot to try to get him goin? what happened to us being aggressive? ah well, we’re scoring runs rampantly so i’ll shut up now. lol

...what you do is you let him go to the plate and do his job, and at the end of the season the results will have been there. Nobody needs to get him going. He’s a professional hitter.
Hardly. The guy rips the Reds every time it’s deserved. I was in Cincy last week for the Cubs series, and on the front of the Monday paper was a story about the Reds getting swept by the Braves. It had a quote from Brennaman that said “They might not win another game.”
I think he has a sore spot for the Cubs because he’s ticked about how they handled his son’s departure. And I think he’s become a bit of a cranky old man at the end of the road (I think he’s finished after the 2010 season). But no way in heck is he a homer.
BTW, did you know when Staats left, the Cubs approached Marty about the job? He said no, he was happy in Cincy, but his son might be interested. That’s how the Cubs got Thom.
I was really insistent before the season that they weren’t a big threat to us in the division, and they had enough young talent that they could have strung together some early wins and made me look REALLY bad. Thanks, Dusty!
That I don’t have numbers to back it up. However, my thought is that Marmol is our best arm in the ‘pen. I don’t like the idea of him handing the ball to an arm that isn’t as good as his unless it is Wood coming in to close the door.
hate to consider what kind of horrific situation would lead to such a miserable day in Cubs history, but yea, you gotta stick with the Ace of your staff
that her motion is very different than a hardball pitcher. She throws 63 with lots of motion but from a much shorter distance. But she is one of the best of what she does. I’d be interested in seeing her pitch against male softball players. And I don’t mean Chicago style slow pitch.
It actually could help her out, the same way that submariners and knuckleballers are helped by throwing off the natural timing of the hitter.
Now, if EVERYBODY in MLB threw that style, they’d probably get lit up. But as a short reliever, and as a one-of-a-kind? Might get by on the “gimmick” alone.
i mean for his first year as closer, he has been pretty awesome. really only two bad outings (both against brew crew at home) plus a couple runs here and there (like tonight)
good night all -- good win (taking out Peavy like that)
this is our last night of sleep without Jim Edmonds in a Cubs lineup. Perhaps I won’t wake up and I”m wondering if it’s a good thing or a bad thing. Ah well… like sands through the hourglass….
a restaurant in Chicago like he did in STL. Because I think we can all agree Chicago needs another over-priced, upscale sports oriented establishment with sub-par service and even worse food. lol
And, if he sucks, he’ll probably get to see if the Iowa unis bring out his eyes.
Or just get dumped. Ugh, Edmonds. I hope that, if this doesn’t work out, this lights the proverbial fire up Pie’s ass to start hitting more efficiently(or for Piniella to give him more consistent PT).
It will be interesting to see how many times Edmonds legs out an infield hit or stretches a single into a double. Or steals a base, or puts down a sac bunt. Or doesn’t dive for a flyball because he ran underneath it. I could go on and on…. I’m hoping all this ragging on Edmonds will come back to haunt me and he’s a stud in CF for a few months. But even I can write the scouting report for opposing pitchers on Edmonds: High Heat. ugh alright I’m done with this topic. Time to start cheering for the guy, starting tomorrow when I wake up. lol
So I tuned into CSN in hopes of seeing SportsNite...
...and instead am greeted by Hawk and DJ talking about players trying to “make adjustments and do the little things to get things going again.” Yay! And then I heard one of them say the STUPIDEST THING I HAVE EVER HEARD ON TELEVISION:
“What I’d like to see is a guy who’s struggling at the plate just throw himself in front of a pitch. Just… go up there and throw himself over the heart of the plate, and say ‘I slipped’ and take his base.”
No you would not! No you would not want to see anyone do this ever. There’s absolutely no way that you would get a free base out of that. What you could get was DEATH. Death or absurdly serious head injuries.
Want to post this here also because i feel strongly about it but here is m OP on #15
I feel like i am living in the twilight zone… I am legitimately excited about Jim Edmonds coming aboard. This is a guy that I have hated since he became a red bird when i was in eighth grade. Eight years later IF he has something left in the tank (which both our scouts and Greg maddux think he does) this is the type of upgrade that could do wonders for our ball club.
Do not be surprised if tomorrow Dome is hitting second where he should be and Edmonds is hitting fifth. THis will help Aramis and Lee (who is slumping) by putting an OBP machine in front of them. I think this will really help our offense. We were not going to play Pie anyway for whatever reason so this transaction needed to happen. We paid him 284,000 for one year. and if it doesnt work we will cut and run and never look back. There is only positives in this. Except for if Carlos punches him in the eye. I am about to link two articles. The first of which is the one which talks about why we are signing him and the second of which is the players reactions….
On another note I love Lou and Hendry but I think they have really mis managed Pie… This is pathetic that we are sending him to AAA. At least there though he can hit consistently and hopefully get his stroke back….
It pains me to say this but can we please give #15 a chance…. ANd by a chance i mean a 2 week stretch…. That is all. I respect peoples differences. But lets give it a chance.
Lets get some runs here
Morg98 - May 14, 2008
is that good enough for you?
ballhawk - May 14, 2008
Well, I don tlike to complain
But a 3 run homer…..hahahaha
YES!
Morg98 - May 14, 2008
Find it funny...
...that as Pie packs his bags for Des Moines, cubs.com is attempting to garner all-star votes for him.
TXCub - May 14, 2008
Why not? Edmonds could be long gone by ASB...
ballhawk - May 14, 2008
HOMERUN

Geovany heard otherwise.

Jesus.. Maybe our hitting doesn’t want Edmonds on the team either.
Schizo - May 14, 2008
not sure what the big deal is with edmonds
hes just the other end of a platoon
bheidge - May 14, 2008
the vs. RHP end.
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
I'd rather had Pie there
Bricks and Ivy - May 14, 2008
let's win this!
Chanman25 - May 14, 2008
I was wrong
on one of BM posts. It wasn’t about Pie it was Daryle Ward and it’s in the DW fanpost.
sue369 - May 14, 2008

Chanman25 - May 14, 2008

sue369 - May 14, 2008
that will shush him for awhile
he’s been extremely annoying. payback’s a bitch, aint it?
Chanman25 - May 14, 2008
yep it is.
He tried explaining his Soriano comment and I think Hammer just showed a picture of a guy who painted himself into a corner.
sue369 - May 14, 2008
Damn it.
Lou took the bat out of Lilly’s hands!
cwyers - May 14, 2008
It won't hurt his better than Edmonds average though

I've received at least 20 text messages
from Cardinals fans telling me how Edmonds is a washed up choke artist. I should be making fun of them about that, NOT VICE-VERSA! oh man, karma is a bit*h
chi-townbleacherbum - May 14, 2008
You can counter that with:
Mulder,Kennedy,Clement, Izturis, Carpenter shall I name more? are washed up choke artists.
Galvan316 - May 14, 2008
don't worry... i did counter
with all of those as well as most of their starting rotation and closer lol but thanks
chi-townbleacherbum - May 14, 2008

Itchy - May 14, 2008
Plunked Gonzalez
Hmm….
jbau - May 14, 2008
Why is Chad Fox on this team?
Especially when with have Pignetello and Hart.
Galvan316 - May 14, 2008
Pignatiello
10.24 ERA at Iowa… he’s really struggling.
Agree with you about Fox, though.
jbau - May 14, 2008
Fox has a nasty slider when he actually gets warmed up properly. I prefer him to Pignatiello but I’m a fan of Hart.

CubbyBlues - May 14, 2008
Apparently Lilly's playing a different type of game
We give him a lead… and he tries to give it back.
SackMan - May 14, 2008
I believe Jason Marquis came up with that game
CubsBall2202 - May 14, 2008

JB 23 - May 14, 2008

The Ks are nice, but he’s given up a bunch of hits too…
SouthernCub - May 14, 2008

Yet Ted Lilly happened? WTF that doesnt even make any sense.
People act like San Deigo got 15 runs that inning.
Galvan316 - May 14, 2008
You can get a lot of Ks and still have a bad start
SouthernCub - May 14, 2008
Mister`

Reddevil - May 14, 2008
Far from it
SouthernCub - May 14, 2008
How is 11K'S
A bad start? Look at have Peavy Did
Galvan316 - May 14, 2008
**Look at what Peavy Did***
Galvan316 - May 14, 2008
Yes, Peavy had a really bad start...
Lilly had 4 really good innings and one really bad one, and did a good job of surviving what could have been the second really bad inning. Gotta look at the total package, not just the Ks.
SouthernCub - May 14, 2008
Yeah, but 11 Ks, 1 BB, 0 HR...
...tells me that Lilly did his job, and balls just fell in for hits against him. A pitcher normally doesn’t control his hits.
cwyers - May 14, 2008
Not saying it was a terrible start...
just saying that the 11 Ks don’t tell the whole story. He had 4 amazing innings and 1 really bad one.
SouthernCub - May 14, 2008
Running it through FIP-ERA...
...gives you a 0.03 ERA for that sort of a performance. Yeah, six hits – but pitchers don’t give up hits, defenses do, in my opinion.
cwyers - May 14, 2008
He had four very good innings...
and one very bad one. It’s that simple. FIP-ERA away, but he was two different pitchers tonight.
SouthernCub - May 14, 2008
Explain FIP-ERA to me please?
GoCubbies34 - May 14, 2008
Fielding Independent Pitching.
It’s an ERA calculator that tries to see how a pitcher would perform with a neutral/average defense. The formula is:
((13HR+3BB-2*K)/IP)+3.2
It’s a quick-and-dirty way of looking at a pitcher’s results based upon the Three True Outcomes, based on the assumption that a pitcher doesn’t control how often a batted ball is turned into a out or becomes a hit.
cwyers - May 14, 2008
That should be thirteen times home runs and three times walks.
My kingdom for an escape character!
cwyers - May 14, 2008
gotcha....
Because the only thing a pitcher controls are HR, BB, and K. How did those constants get formed?
GoCubbies34 - May 14, 2008
A guy named Tom Tango ran a regression analysis...
...and found numbers that seemed to match up pretty well. It’s a simplified version of DIPS.
cwyers - May 14, 2008
Please stop it
It was not a “quality” start, but the bottom line is he’s leaving with a lead and is in line to get the victory.
I swear, some of you will be satisfied with nothing but 10-0 victories every night.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
Exactly
I think Lilly Pitched well, hit his spots got into some jams, but he has the lead.
Galvan316 - May 14, 2008
Don't tell me what to do...
I’m not a negative fan. Your militant attitude is annoying.
SouthernCub - May 14, 2008
So...
“please stop it”=militant.
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
Please review his post history...
This is not limited to this one post.
SouthernCub - May 14, 2008

cwyers - May 14, 2008
Agree....and the in the moment reactions are part of the deal
...everyone reacts a little differently to what is happening in the game…
JB 23 - May 14, 2008
To clarify...
I was not venting. I’m very happy we’re winning. I was just pointing out that the 11 Ks aren’t the entire story. That’s why I was so annoyed by Not Bruce Froemming’s comment.
SouthernCub - May 14, 2008
As you said yourself, though...
...this is part of a larger pattern of behavior for NBF, and that’s what I was addressing. Sorry if that was unclear.
cwyers - May 14, 2008
No apologies
When a guy strikes out 11 and all someone wants to do is point out the runs he allowed - in a game he’s leading - that’s ridiculous.
And if you don’t like my “pattern of behavior,” talk to Al. I’ve got a few people whose “pattern of behavior” I’m not thrilled about, either.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
Take it in context man...
Sheesh. I wasn’t complaining. Just pointing out facts. You’re so wrapped up in attacking anyone who says anything remotely not positive that you have no concept of rational debate.
SouthernCub - May 14, 2008
Not remotely not positive
Anything that’s relentlessly negative, particularly when there’s no reason to be.
Let’s chill, OK?
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
Nothing I said was relentlessly negative...
yet you jumped on me. that was my point.
SouthernCub - May 14, 2008
Your attitude is basically think like you do
or get out of here… or please stop it as you said. Thats what rubs folks the wrong way.
LT - May 14, 2008
Again, no apologies
But I did say “Please,” after all. :)
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
Sorry for misreading...
Thanks for the statement.
SouthernCub - May 14, 2008
Seriously Guys
I think I was the one who made light of people talking about Ted Lilly’s start, I didnt want to start a flame war or anything.
Lets not get into an arguement over stupid stuff.
Lets just sit back relax and enjoy what hopefully will be a Cubs Win!
Galvan316 - May 14, 2008

Let’s buckle down and get this victory, eh?

thats the great thing about having so many good hitters in the lineup

JB 23 - May 14, 2008
When you have a hitter like Lee...
...what you do is you let him go to the plate and do his job, and at the end of the season the results will have been there. Nobody needs to get him going. He’s a professional hitter.

Itchy - May 14, 2008
Based on what?
The tone of his voice is pleasing? He’s an overt homer, and he’s self-righteous.
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
Overt homer?
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
I think we're obliged to report you to the police

I like it.
He hasn’t pitched in a couple days. He’s gotta get work. Can’t just flip a switch.
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
you think lou is gonna pitch him one or two?
dariot2 - May 14, 2008
one
just to stay sharp.
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
But if he is only going to pitch 1 inning
Shouldn’t it be the 8th, not the 7th?
dbaltman - May 14, 2008
He's getting the top of the lineup
and if he does it in few enough pitches, he’ll probably get the middle of the lineup, too.
DGU - May 14, 2008
thats what i was thinking cuz id rather go howry marmol then marmol howry
dariot2 - May 14, 2008
you would think.
especially since the big guns would be the 8th.
but 3 and 4 for SD are lefties. He’ll go 1.3 and eyre goes 2/3
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
That may be the case, too
If Eyre is trusted enough. I haven’t seen him pitch yet. How does he look?
DGU - May 14, 2008
looked good last time out.
if eyre is trusted enough? we’re up 3. gotta use him sometime.
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
he looks pretty good
id rather have him in the pen that marshall or fox
dariot2 - May 14, 2008
If our pen has Eyre back at full strength
the pen is going to be fine this year.
DGU - May 14, 2008
I Guess
But I get nervous having someone come in between Marmol and Wood. I don’t like the idea of Marmol handing the ball to anyone but our closer.
dbaltman - May 14, 2008
that's irrational
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
I'll freely admit
That I don’t have numbers to back it up. However, my thought is that Marmol is our best arm in the ‘pen. I don’t like the idea of him handing the ball to an arm that isn’t as good as his unless it is Wood coming in to close the door.
Just a gut feeling.
dbaltman - May 14, 2008
When did Lieber last pitch?
Schizo - May 14, 2008
i think the day he gave up a trillion homers
dariot2 - May 14, 2008
his start against cinci
MJMars - May 14, 2008
i guess should save Lieber for friday when Gallagher pitches.
Schizo - May 14, 2008
btw
33K’s in 24 innings for marmol – HOLY COW!!!!!!
CubbyBlues - May 14, 2008
hes dirty
dariot2 - May 14, 2008
i doont know how he doesnt make it on thats nasty everynight he pitches
dariot2 - May 14, 2008
K's the side... WOW
LT - May 14, 2008
MARMOL IS A GOD
MJMars - May 14, 2008
He is really someting special....
Marmol shuts it down in the 7th. Strikes out the side…
JB 23 - May 14, 2008
Marmol = All Star?
Si or No?
Galvan316 - May 14, 2008
si
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
Only
if there’s justice in the world
Reddevil - May 14, 2008
you mean yes or YES!
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
Marmol is unreal
I saw him pitch as a starter a few years back in Colorado and he couldn’t find the strike zone with both hands. I never would have predicted this.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
seriously.
i thought he was the next angel guzman
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
What ever happened to him?
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
injuries
SouthernCub - May 14, 2008
Is he still on the DL?
I thought I heard something about him a few weeks ago.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
I think so....he is on the 40 man roster I believe
JB 23 - May 14, 2008
60-day
40 man.
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
Thanks
Who knows when/if we’ll see him again.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
We should convert more
of our minor league catchers into pitchers.
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
I'M LOOKING AT YOU, KOYIE
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
koyie days
were painful days at the catcher spot
CubbyBlues - May 14, 2008
I'm trying to imagine

DGU - May 14, 2008
He can
do anything
Reddevil - May 14, 2008
He delivered my son.
The thing is, I don’t have a son yet. He’s that amazing.
NittanyCub - May 14, 2008
He cuts and

sue369 - May 14, 2008

NittanyCub - May 14, 2008

Reddevil - May 14, 2008
He is a vacuum.
He will suck up any baseballs you put him right on top of.
cwyers - May 14, 2008
To his credit
He made a really nasty catch tonight
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
Now the Padres announcers are blaming the ump
for all their strike outs tonight.
LT - May 14, 2008

he complains more about umps than booby cox
dariot2 - May 14, 2008
booby?

i wasnt sure if you really didnt know who i was talking about… or thought i was making a bad joke
dariot2 - May 14, 2008
Isn't Andy Mazur (sp?)
part of the Padres broadcast team now?
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
Yup.
He’s their Cory Provus.
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
I actually like Provus
much more than I did Mazur. Ha for some odd reason I remember Pat and Ron always used to rip on Andy for being ~ 37 and single.
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
Andy Masur
A proud graduate of Bradley University in Peoria, also the home of Jack Brickhouse.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
Ah yes..... its either the fans fault of the umps fault.... NEVER THE PLAYERS
Galvan316 - May 14, 2008
WP woot!
now it doesn’t matter that he didn’t get the bunt down
CubbyBlues - May 14, 2008

marmols batting...how about he jacks one?
dariot2 - May 14, 2008
*Waiting for cwyers' updated Reed Johnson vs. Ted Lilly stats*
Schwa - May 14, 2008
wait
marmol hit a hr? when?
MJMars - May 14, 2008
2006.
A year erased from memory by just about all of us.
Schwa - May 14, 2008
How did Reed get released?
miamicanes - May 14, 2008
He was among a plethora of outfielders...
“Jefe, what is a plethora?”
Reddevil - May 14, 2008
three amigos?
JB 23 - May 14, 2008
¡SÃ!
Reddevil - May 14, 2008
Marmol with an at bat.... Interesting
Galvan316 - May 14, 2008
what is the point?
CubbyBlues - May 14, 2008
For him to pitch next inning as well.
NittanyCub - May 14, 2008
He'll probably pitch to the first batter in the 8th
The next two batters are lefties, so that calls for Eyre.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
Our pitchers actually hit pretty well..
Schizo - May 14, 2008
cwyers.....I think Reed may have taken the lead on Lilly with the double!
JB 23 - May 14, 2008
Reed took the lead his first plate appearance of the game.
I was actually a little upset when Lou had Lilly bunt because it meant that he wouldn’t have a chance to even things up.
cwyers - May 14, 2008
Pat: "Marmol has been up one time this season, and he struck out"
Ron: “yeah, he can swing the bat”

Who was third in 2007 MVP voting among Cub players, 26th overall?
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
Sori?
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
Nope.
He was first among Cub players last year, 12th overall.
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008

Nope.
Didn’t place or show.

chi-townbleacherbum - May 14, 2008

Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008

DTJchris - May 14, 2008

DTJchris - May 14, 2008
DT can have it.
lol
chi-townbleacherbum - May 14, 2008

And was behind Big Z in Cy Young voting.

dariot2 - May 14, 2008
Is my left leg

Reddevil - May 14, 2008
Marmol
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
only for the fact he pitches half of the innings that Z does.
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008

CubbyBlues - May 14, 2008
Was Eyre even up in the pen?
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
Who comes in in the 9th?
Save Wood for tomorrow, I would think.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
But I guess he's up in the bullpen
So much for that idea.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
Let Marmol pitch left-handed.
NittanyCub - May 14, 2008
then
hell strike outside in 20 pitches instead of 14
dariot2 - May 14, 2008
Lol watch Fox come in.
Schizo - May 14, 2008
If you won't pitch Chad Fox with a four run lead then you shouldn't pitch him at all.
Seriously.
cwyers - May 14, 2008
yeah
i guess the argument would be “wood needs regular work”
CubbyBlues - May 14, 2008
I suppose.
Why don’t we just go to an 8 man pitching staff and get it over with?
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
Yeah.
If you have so many problems getting guys work, then having so many “waste” pitchers on the roster doesn’t help anything.
cwyers - May 14, 2008
When did Fox work last?
Did he pitch last night or Monday?
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
More recently than he probably should have.
cwyers - May 14, 2008
True.
I thought after Dusty abused him against the Reds that Fox’s career was over. I’m glad to see he’s back, but he needs to be used judiciously.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
Last Sunday, against Arizona
Gave up no runs in 1.2 innings.
NittanyCub - May 14, 2008
technically...he inherited the bases loaded and proceeded to walk the two runs in...
JB 23 - May 14, 2008
You really have to judge a reliever by their ability to keep inherited runners from scoring...
...because that’s their job. It’s why ERA is such a poor metric for evaluating relievers.
cwyers - May 14, 2008
That's the absolute opposite definition of the word "technically"
You’re looking for “realistically.”
NittanyCub - May 14, 2008
Use him tomorrow
I’m thinking we’ll need him tomorrow to close. Guess we’ll see.
Schizo - May 14, 2008
Cubs bullpen hasn't given up a run
in 17 straight innings, approaching 6 consecutive games
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
Does anything feel better
than having a solid bullpen?
Reddevil - May 14, 2008
Well, here's hoping
The Cubs pen doesn’t pull a Reds tonight and gets this one done quickly.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
They have Dusty managing. Lou actually pulls pitchers when they start to scuk.
Schizo - May 14, 2008
Speaking of which....
Reds won in 10. Sweep, I believe?
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
Four-game series

why?
Bar1908 - May 14, 2008

Cat Osterman!
bubbamike the one and only - May 14, 2008
I really am curious to see how a top-shelf softball pitcher like her...
...would do against MLB pitching. The thing is, there’s absolutely no data on earth that would provide us with any sort of an indicator.
cwyers - May 14, 2008
which is why we should try it out
CubbyBlues - May 14, 2008
Who is she?
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
Pitcher for the U.S. softball team
She might even be better than Jennie Finch.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
Pitcher for Team USA softball.
Official website.
cwyers - May 14, 2008
the basic problem is
that her motion is very different than a hardball pitcher. She throws 63 with lots of motion but from a much shorter distance. But she is one of the best of what she does. I’d be interested in seeing her pitch against male softball players. And I don’t mean Chicago style slow pitch.
bubbamike the one and only - May 14, 2008
Is that a problem?
It actually could help her out, the same way that submariners and knuckleballers are helped by throwing off the natural timing of the hitter.
Now, if EVERYBODY in MLB threw that style, they’d probably get lit up. But as a short reliever, and as a one-of-a-kind? Might get by on the “gimmick” alone.
cwyers - May 14, 2008
why? wppd

CubbyBlues - May 14, 2008
Wood hasn't done so hot in those, either.
He’s only converted two out of four of his one-run saves. He’s converted all of his three-run saves, which helps his numbers a bit.
cwyers - May 14, 2008

That's probably borderline
Here’s hoping the Cubs beat up on Maddux tomorrow and we don’t have to worry about it.

This is a great addition to BCB.
I hope your fingers fall off from loading it so many times!

Reddevil - May 14, 2008
whew.
eswan9 - May 14, 2008
WOW
so is this a save now?
CubbyBlues - May 14, 2008
no
you can’t create a save opportunity for yourself.
SouthernCub - May 14, 2008
No
You can’t pitch yourself into a save situation.
Now, if Wood came out and, say, Howry came in and got the last out, he would have gotten a save.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
gotcha
damn, cuz now this just hurts my fantasy team
CubbyBlues - May 14, 2008
John Dewan said on Murph the other day
that only like 60% of saves are converted. Doesn’t that sound low? But the guy does it for aliving, so I guess I gotta believe him
lostinthevines - May 14, 2008
In other news:
Dodgers piling it on the Brewers, putting 3 runs in 9th.
Dodgers 6, Brewers 4
NittanyCub - May 14, 2008
Brewers blew the lead trail 6-4!
Itchy - May 14, 2008
Yes!!
Bump Bailey - May 14, 2008
Is that Bruce Froemming?
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
I resemble that remark :)
I was listening to the Brewers game last week and heard Froemming doing an ad for a nursing home. I almost threw up all over myself.
I’ve hated that jerk since Pappas’ no-hitter in 1972.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
Nice play on words
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
Me too!
He screwed Milt out of perfect game.
Itchy - May 14, 2008
He sure did
Pappas still is ticked about it.
Froemming spent 35 years screwing the Cubs every chance he got.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
Also a racist and an anti-semite
zevkalman - May 14, 2008
Sexist too, right?
In fact, I think he was sexist/racist/anti-semitic all to the same person.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
Sounds like closers in the NL Central
Are having a rough go of it. By comparison, Wood is Mariano Rivera.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
yeah woody has been fine
i mean for his first year as closer, he has been pretty awesome. really only two bad outings (both against brew crew at home) plus a couple runs here and there (like tonight)
CubbyBlues - May 14, 2008
Reddevil - May 14, 2008
where can we see the press conference?
sox are on csn and lou was supposed to talk about Edmonds
Rezze21 - May 14, 2008
Counsel K'd
1 out
NittanyCub - May 14, 2008
Trade Kerry Wood,
The Yankees are willing to trade La Troy Hawkins. La Troy is a real closer!
Mr W - May 14, 2008
Kaplan gone
2 outs.
NittanyCub - May 14, 2008
good night all -- good win (taking out Peavy like that)
this is our last night of sleep without Jim Edmonds in a Cubs lineup. Perhaps I won’t wake up and I”m wondering if it’s a good thing or a bad thing. Ah well… like sands through the hourglass….
chi-townbleacherbum - May 14, 2008
The one good thing about getting Edmonds
is that it pisses Lance off!
bubbamike the one and only - May 14, 2008
And
He can’t be worse than Don Landrum. Can he?
bubbamike the one and only - May 14, 2008
Dodgers out-gun the Brewers
Wakka wakka.
NittanyCub - May 14, 2008
Juan Pierre of all people drives in the winning runs
Pierre gets 3 hits today to power the Dodgers past the Brewers.
I think Prince needs to eat some more meat.
zevkalman - May 14, 2008
Maybe Edmonds will open
a restaurant in Chicago like he did in STL. Because I think we can all agree Chicago needs another over-priced, upscale sports oriented establishment with sub-par service and even worse food. lol
chi-townbleacherbum - May 14, 2008
How many ex-Cardinals own restaurants in STL now?
Ozzie … Shannon … Hrabosky … Jack Buck … Edmonds …
Anybody else?
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
Hey you leave Mike Ditka out of this
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
Don't know if it was mentioned
but was Edmonds signed anytime during the game?
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
Happened around 5:30
Link!
NittanyCub - May 14, 2008
Nevermind
Hendry on the air right now….”Edmonds will suit up tomorrow. I talked to Felix….blah blah blah” IT’S HERE!
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
"hopefully Jimmy's got something left"
Way to set expectations, Hendry!
ballhawk - May 14, 2008
"no negatives"
on signing Jimmy according to Handry.
Itchy - May 14, 2008
Hendry
Itchy - May 14, 2008
what channel is this on? CSN?
cubsnlinux - May 14, 2008
wgn radio
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
I was listening to WGN radio
ballhawk - May 14, 2008
thank you
cubsnlinux - May 14, 2008
pending the results of the physical i believe --but that should have been way over by now
and has anybody ever not passed a MLB physical in this millenium? If six-fingered kazimotos can pass…..
chi-townbleacherbum - May 14, 2008
Yes
But I can’t remember who.
bubbamike the one and only - May 14, 2008
Roger 'the Roid Rage' Wilson
nope i’m sorry… he passed too
chi-townbleacherbum - May 14, 2008
i believe..
sindey ponson did a couple seasons ago.
bikemonkey - May 14, 2008
Edmonds: Couldn't hurt, might help
Personally, I would have stuck with Pie, but I’m guessing Lou/Hendry know something about him that we don’t.
And if Edmonds sucks, he won’t be here long.
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
LSA..
I think everyone is freaking out and making this a big deal!
cubsnlinux - May 14, 2008
His Cardinals connection probably is why
I hated him when he was in STL. And I still think he’s a jerk. But now he’s our jerk, so …
Not Bruce Froemming - May 14, 2008
I think Lou wanted Edmonds
a bit more than Hendry. Citing Mark O’neil and and Marquis as points of reference for Edmonds don’t really help his credibility as a player IMO
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
Mark O'Neil and Marquis?
cubsnlinux - May 14, 2008
Both
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
O'Neil used to be
the CArdinals trainer and obviously Marquis was his teammate there too.
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
Lou said he hadn't seen him play and hadn't really looked at the scouting.
He probably told Hendry he wanted SOMEBODY and trusted Hendry to bring in what he could.
cwyers - May 14, 2008
It's only going to cost around 284,000 as well.
NittanyCub - May 14, 2008
Good to hear Hendry re: Pie
He’s 23 and needs regular ABs. If he’s not getting them here, he needs to be at AAA.
Hope we can keep with Felix for a little while longer.
Bildo1805 - May 14, 2008
God I hope he's a starter 2 months from now.
NittanyCub - May 14, 2008
I'm praying u r right
It will be interesting to see how many times Edmonds legs out an infield hit or stretches a single into a double.
Time to start cheering for the guy, starting tomorrow when I wake up. lol
chi-townbleacherbum - May 14, 2008
Why am I listening to Milt Rosenberg?
Jayo525 - May 14, 2008
press conference over?
CubbyBlues - May 14, 2008
Because..
You have insomnia?..:)
Bump Bailey - May 14, 2008
So I tuned into CSN in hopes of seeing SportsNite...
...and instead am greeted by Hawk and DJ talking about players trying to “make adjustments and do the little things to get things going again.” Yay!
Stupid, stupid, STUPID.
cwyers - May 14, 2008
Want to post this here also because i feel strongly about it but here is m OP on #15
I feel like i am living in the twilight zone… I am legitimately excited about Jim Edmonds coming aboard.
