On the other – it’s a VERY common convention to say “we” in reference to a team you root for. It’s not like I came on the thread and said “OMG I can’t believe we’re not playing Cedeno every day WTF Lou must be a flaming retard!!!” Not sure why I got jumped on, but makes me want to NOT post.
in light of the fact that my statement wasn’t inflammatory. It was a comment that might have elicited a reasoned response, but instead I got a tossed off, snide comment regarding my use of the word “we” when referring to a team that I’ve followed and loved since I was 12.

He’s our most productive hitter so far, and he’s a good defensive catcher. He is, at this moment, challenging Berkmann and Utley as NL MVP. Nobody on the team is close.
You say its not close….im not going to waste my time because you can give me three stats for one player. Im not going to stop what im doing to show you there are others on this team that are close to being team MVP. Key word is CLOSE. Soto isnt running away with anything….is he leading probably. Is it CLOSE-——YES
And if we were talking about the Cy Young award...
...Z would have a case. But starting pitchers rarely win MVP awards, because they only play every five days. (And anyone who thinks that a setup man is going to win the MVP award? I have a greater chance of spontaniously becoming a bowl of sentient Jell-O.)
my reference was to the team MVP… sorry. but since he’s among the leaders in pitching for the NL, i’ll say he’s in the running for the team mvp, but of course you guys are debating the NL mvp.
TEAM mvp. There’s an argument to be made. Your standard of proof is only that there is a case to be made. The fact that you give no credence to any other player to Geo (who has been phenomenal) makes you seem a bit… um. Rigid.
...which is normally enough to get you very strong consideration as the MVP. The guy is putting up MVP-caliber numbers for a first baseman as a catcher. And he’s near tops in the league in things like CS% and WP+PB/G – he’s one of the top defensive catchers in baseball as well. I don’t get the countervailing argument here.
Z has been involved in more plays than Soto though.
He may only play 1 in five days, but he is a determinive factor in all those ABs. 62 IP 50H 15BB is about 250 ABs he is involved in. Soto has had about 160 PAs. Does Soto call the games, or does Z decide, or does the bench? Add in 25 Stolen base attempts and it is still only 185.
The self-proclaimed "best baseball fans in the world" . . .
. . . just LOUDLY booed Jason Isringhausen off the field. Granted, it’s raining in St. Louis, but once again some Cards fans are showing their true colors. This seems like one of those “beginning-of-the-end” games for them . . .I know we all hope it is.
He’s really come into his own out there, and he was the one pitcher I was most frightened about coming into the year. He’s been a very welcome surprise and if he can continue this, he will be our #2 or 3 in October, I think. That is, if we make it that far.
With all the K’s you’d think we were back in ‘03 or something!
Great work by Demp, and the Padres sure are horrible. I know they have an inferiority complex towards the Cubs in general, but this year they really look like a team that won’t (or can’t) click.
Demp has been pitching beautifully. The bats are hot, except for a former Crapinal that shall not be named. Maddux was given a classy send off to the dugout. Good stuff!!!
I pulled a major MBDNIU about it in the offseason. I’m so ashamed. I’d like to apologize to my wife, who’s stood by me this entire time. I’d like to thank the good people of New York for allowing me to serve them.
I thought he’d basically be like Marquis with a better K-rate and more walks. So far, he’s definitely been better than I could have imagined. Hopefully he keeps pitching fairly well all year and continues to prove me wrong.
PAT: And Dempster will get a standing ovation. Let’s just listen to this for a moment… (split second silence) RON: Yeah, um, uh….he’ll definitely get some, um, applause here, uh…
I believe if you have a 3 run lead or less and pitch an inning or more. Or if you pitch 3 while keeping the lead throughout. Or if the tying run is potentially on deck.
Shows all the people who fret over Kerry that he is a PITCHER now, not just a thrower. Kerry is one of the best closers in the NL right now, and this is his first year doing it. The worriers need not worry about a couple of bad innings . . . many more good than bad are down the road.
Not all great setup men are great closers right away, either.
If Carlos ends up with 10-15 saves like I think he will by year’s end, then I will start thinking about his as the bonafide closer. Until then, why mess with success?
be indifferent at best, but the booing went on a little too long when he was out in CF. Boo his bad hitting I guess, but let the man be out there. He’s here, he’s a Cub, get used to it. lol.
Sue is a hater, but i cant hate her back shes a cubs fan and in the end of things thats all that matters to me. It makes everyone on this site a winner to me :p
how that would make me feel better. Just dont know what to call it when i find it hard to come here and discuss baseball cause i know ur gonna attack any and every post for the smallest things. But if thats not how you feel then thats cool, we are both here for the same thing and thats to talk about one of our favorite things in the world, the cubbies!
The Phillies were expecting their former starter turned closer turned starter again Brett Myers to be their ace this year and he’s turned out to be a boob.
Interesting that Dempster, who barely broke the rotation, is making Lou and crew look like geniuses for using him in is true starter role.
He had a solid single-a long fly that the wind held in the park…..both balls were wel struck. He foolishly swung at one of Maddux’s first pitch sucker sinkers and hit into a DP-on the K with the bags loaded: that was a tough lefty-but the key to the AB was strike one which looked about 6” inside. He complained a tad-but i wish i had tivo to double check that location. He was toast after that-a couple sweeping breaking pitches and he was done. Had he been a little more relaxed, maybe he lays off of one of those.
I’m afraid with the Cubs only being 2 games up with 121 to go that the Astros will still be mathematically alive regardless of the outcome of today’s Astros-Giants game.
but do yourself a favor and look at the BA of EVERY OTHER POSITION PLAYER in the lineup…..Pie and Johnson aren’t going to do much more than 1-4 most of the time anyway.
...but the fact that he did get a hit and hit another ball very hard does give me some hope. Also, hey, at least the team was getting runners on base for the middle of the lineup.
First?

Soto has been the best hitter on our team so far this year...
...and plays the toughest defensive position on the diamond VERY well.
cwyers - May 15, 2008
That's true. You'll get no argument from me!
daver - May 15, 2008
Geovanny Soto.
And I don’t think it’s close.

Good choice.
gary varsho - May 15, 2008
Really? I could spout off about 3 or 4 guys
Not saying your wrong but YES IMO it is close.
Hammer - May 15, 2008
Nobody on this team is outhitting Soto right now.
He’s our most productive hitter so far, and he’s a good defensive catcher. He is, at this moment, challenging Berkmann and Utley as NL MVP. Nobody on the team is close.
cwyers - May 15, 2008
Ha, whatever
I disagree….its is VERY CLOSE
Hammer - May 15, 2008
Apparently Chipper isnt close either
Hammer - May 15, 2008
Forgot about Chipper - I'll give you that.
But Soto is outhitting Lee, outhitting Ramirez, outhitting Dome… and he’s a catcher! I don’t see how you can say that right now he isn’t our MVP.
cwyers - May 15, 2008
Agreed... it isn't close.
Soto has substantially outperformed the others so far.
But yeah, I’d say Chipper has a pretty good case for NL MVP.
SouthernCub - May 15, 2008
Berkmann's probably the guy I'd chose if I was asked and the balloting ended today.
But all four of them have a case right now.
cwyers - May 15, 2008
All Im arguing is that you said it wasnt even close
It is very close.
Hammer - May 15, 2008
Based on what?
Soto leads comfortably in AVG, OBP and SLG. He has a more than 100 point lead in OPS. And he plays the most important defensive position.
SouthernCub - May 15, 2008
Maybe Marmol's impact isn't as broad
But no one’s been more dominant. Its close
Reddevil - May 15, 2008
You think its not close
I think its very close. Thats it, thanks.
Hammer - May 15, 2008
Okay, based on nothing...
If you aren’t going to provide rationale other than “I think so” then I guess we are done with this discussion.
SouthernCub - May 15, 2008
Its close.......
You say its not close….im not going to waste my time because you can give me three stats for one player. Hammer - May 15, 2008
If you can't provide any support...
how can you say it’s close. Clearly you can stop what you’re doing enough to post regularly, so that’s a terrible excuse.
Saying it’s close without providing any support for why you think that is pointless.
SouthernCub - May 15, 2008
Congrats this is the second time
we have argued about---hmmmmmmm nothing really. It is my opinion Mr Bernstein, I dont need to provide ANYTHING to back up my opinion.

www.cubs.com
Hammer - May 15, 2008
Umm, I did...
he has a 80 point lead over everyone in OPS. He’s tied for the highest OBP. He plays the toughest position defensively. It’s not close.
SouthernCub - May 15, 2008
Close
Thats my opinion I wont change it. Thanks.

...he leads the team in RBIs, second in home runs and fourth in average. He’s having a monster season at the plate, and he’s a catcher.
cwyers - May 15, 2008
Agreed
Team MVP vote, it would be a close one.
Hammer - May 15, 2008
You're sounding like MDBNIU right now...
spouting statements with no evidence.
SouthernCub - May 15, 2008
Ha
thanks….....you arent providing much evidence yourself. Thanks for the ###/###/### You are the best.
Hammer - May 15, 2008
Actually, I did provide evidence...
nice try though.
SouthernCub - May 15, 2008
Right a triple slash stat from one guy
why dont you provide stats from the rest of the team to prove WHY Soto is the runaway MVP?
Hammer - May 15, 2008
I provided stats RELATIVE TO OTHERS...
that is, by definition, taking into account the rest of the team. Good lord man.
SouthernCub - May 15, 2008
Right I provided my opinion
you could argue against it with whatever you want but it will still be my opinion therefore you can disagree but not prove it wrong
Hammer - May 15, 2008
At least you looked at facts...
If you view an 80 point difference in OPS as close, then we’ll just have to agree to disagree.
SouthernCub - May 15, 2008
maybe he should get it

carolinacub - May 15, 2008
Lou might let Demp keep going. Only 88 pitches thus far.
gary varsho - May 15, 2008
I'd think he's good for at least another 20 pitches or so.
daver - May 15, 2008
Watching Dempster pitch right now
and remember just one year ago with so many people hating on him calling him names like “Dumpster”.
The irony…
Bluelou - May 15, 2008
I sure am glad I picked Dempster up in few of my Fantasy leagues
others were able to snag him before I was. Damn them!
DTJchris - May 15, 2008
Sweet, Go Bucs!!!

Theriot stands in. Henn has done a good job in relief of Maddux.

that's so good to see
i was starting to wonder, then I shrugged it off like he did.
chi-townbleacherbum - May 15, 2008
Wow
Henn dropped his ERA 2 points in 2 innings
carolinacub - May 15, 2008
You can give up two runs an inning...
...and still lower a 20 ERA.
cwyers - May 15, 2008
I wonder how Henn does with the chicks.
daver - May 15, 2008
Not well...
I hear he’s got a little pec…..nevermind.

TheNextCubsVoice - May 15, 2008
Well it's not like
Cubs fans haven’t booed certain Cubs pitchers off the field before….

Catch any Thome AB’s lately? He can’t hit fastballs any more. Can’t get around on ‘em. He looks done.
gary varsho - May 15, 2008
Thome has looked done
since he arrived in Chicago….
and they haven’t been to the playoffs since… :-)
Bluelou - May 15, 2008
I dunno, his first couple years were pretty good, but he
really and truly cannot catch up to fastballs this year.
gary varsho - May 15, 2008
His "numbers" have been decent
but he has not been able to hit in the clutch.
And for a guy who gets 15 mil per year and does nothing else – that’s not good.
I think he sucks.
Just my opinion though.

Shows all the people who fret over Kerry that he is a PITCHER now, not just a thrower. Kerry is one of the best closers in the NL right now, and this is his first year doing it. The worriers need not worry about a couple of bad innings . . . many more good than bad are down the road.

Too much winning.
No fun.

Demp cchuckling athis face plant
out of the box. Says he’s not a ballerina. Funny visual though

Dempster
Wasn’t that guy, Dempster, supposed to be a suspect starter? He’s practically the ace of the staff. The Cubs would not be in first place without him.
memphiscub - May 15, 2008
Isn't that unreal?
The Phillies were expecting their former starter turned closer turned starter again Brett Myers to be their ace this year and he’s turned out to be a boob.
Interesting that Dempster, who barely broke the rotation, is making Lou and crew look like geniuses for using him in is true starter role.

Edmonds did NOT look that bad at the plate
He had a solid single-a long fly that the wind held in the park…..both balls were wel struck. He foolishly swung at one of Maddux’s first pitch sucker sinkers and hit into a DP-on the K with the bags loaded: that was a tough lefty-but the key to the AB was strike one which looked about 6” inside. He complained a tad-but i wish i had tivo to double check that location. He was toast after that-a couple sweeping breaking pitches and he was done. Had he been a little more relaxed, maybe he lays off of one of those.
cubfever7 - May 15, 2008
He was late
several times on Greg Maddux fastballs.
‘nuff said.
Josh Timmers - May 15, 2008
Any predictions for the upcoming PIT series???
malicedoom - May 15, 2008
I say...
they play 3 games at Wrigley.
digitalbenjamin - May 15, 2008
I'm gonna go out on a limb
and Agree w/ you.
Jayo525 - May 15, 2008
NO PREDICTIONS!
let’s just play it one game at a time. Easier to not jinx that way. :D
drewishdrewid - May 15, 2008
My thought exactly.
daver - May 15, 2008
Demp had 12 K's today right?
Carrie Muskat from Cubs.com has 11 in her wrap-up…

Lou In Blue - May 15, 2008
12.
She’s wrong. Again. Shocked! SHOCKED I AM!
drewishdrewid - May 15, 2008
12
She has 12- “Ryan Dempster struck out a career-high 12 batters Thursday”
Schizo - May 15, 2008
Houston put up 3, but SF came back with another - 7-3 now
malicedoom - May 15, 2008
ain't it a little early...
to score board watch a team in 3rd place?
digitalbenjamin - May 15, 2008
Maybe not 3rd place
soon enough
Rudey - May 15, 2008
Dude..it the middle of May...chill.
If you try and keep this up the rest of the season…you gonna have an aneurysm.
santoswoodenlegs - May 15, 2008
Cubs Can't Clinch Today
I’m afraid with the Cubs only being 2 games up with 121 to go that the Astros will still be mathematically alive regardless of the outcome of today’s Astros-Giants game.
memphiscub - May 15, 2008
Don't kid yourself...
If HOU wins, they are directly behind us (1.5 games)
They have been HOT.
malicedoom - May 15, 2008
Just sayin'...
malicedoom - May 15, 2008
Well me might not see jimmy boy for a while...
three lefties this weekend. In Tom Gorzelanny, Zach Ducke and Doumanttrait vs. Gallagher, Z, and Marquis respectely
fischisgod - May 15, 2008
I'm excited for tomorrow
I think Gallagher has pretty good stuff; it’ll be fun to see him tomorrow.
NittanyCub - May 15, 2008
i think he will be good
he just got gassed last time out…
fischisgod - May 15, 2008
not excited about Marquis
maybe I am wrong, but the last two outings, might not inspire confidence
deployedcubfan - May 15, 2008
same here.
sue369 - May 15, 2008
What I didn't like about Today's game
Mordecai - May 15, 2008
LOL, that does look pretty garish.
daver - May 15, 2008
Yep...
...I think the experiment has failed.
MPH73 - May 15, 2008
Yes...
but do yourself a favor and look at the BA of EVERY OTHER POSITION PLAYER in the lineup…..Pie and Johnson aren’t going to do much more than 1-4 most of the time anyway.
santoswoodenlegs - May 15, 2008
Yeah, it was an inauspicious start...
...but the fact that he did get a hit and hit another ball very hard does give me some hope. Also, hey, at least the team was getting runners on base for the middle of the lineup.
daver - May 15, 2008
If he was the
only Cub to have left that many men on base this season it would be a big deal. It’s his first game here.
