Gallagher pitched decent, not great. Gave up homers to Stairs and Rolen. Edmonds with a couple hits, just missed a homer, 1 RBI. EPat drove in the other run.
I see your point, cwyers. But I thought you liked Patterson not too long ago? I remember me and you being on the same page with him.. maybe I’m wrong though.
Great movie…..in context, the ‘tough guys’, the T-Birds, were making fun of the jocks…..it’s been 20 yrs since I’ve seen the movie so that’s all you’re getting!
I want to be the first to say that we lost this game in the 1st.
All Hoffpauir has to do in the 2 hole is move Theriot over. That is it. He was overmatched all night, and I am assuming that he will see the field again only as a pinch hitter. That is it. Certainly not hitting second. He made contact with the ball 1 time on a foul ball.
Lou did a poor job tonight. I love him like my drunk uncle, but bad. More than willing to empty the bench tonight, except when Soto was the tying run and cannot score on a soft single.
I don't think judging a guy off of three games is an improvement...
...over judging him off of one game. The totality of Micah Hoffpauir’s career is essentially a guy that isn’t really good at anything having to do with baseball – hitting, fielding or baserunning. He plays only one defensive position, the easiest around. He’s not actually a GOOD hitter, at least so far as his minor league numbers would indicate.
If you need a guy to hit for about the league average and play first base, then sure, Hoffpauir’s your guy. I’m just not sure that any team, much less ours, really needs that.
I’m just one guy on the Internet with opinions. I have years of minor league stats and a robust set of minor league park factors and translations to work with. I don’t see what the problem is with looking at the factual record and drawing conclusions from it is.
He knows that the offense is struggling and, with Soriano out, he’s not sure what he has right now. I hope to god we’ve seen the last of Hoffpauir as a #2 hitter.
And you’re exactly right about the first inning. I had a very bad feeling when Burnett got out of it without giving up a run-pitchers tend to settle down after shaky first innings.
I know we lost. But we lost to a decent team on the road with our rookie pitcher on the mound. Stop it everyone. Its one game, and we’ll get ‘em tomorrow. Please?
My thoughts…. Couple opportunities where i wished Sori was in there, but thats something the cubs are going to have to deal with for the next 4-6 weeks….
you can’t expect to win. Someone has to step up and pick up those runners. That’s why we lost tonight, not because of pitching and not because of what Lou did in the 8th. DLee is killing us in the 3 spot is another problem.
Who’s gloomy? How could you be gloomy? I’m normally the gloomy type, but tonight all you can be is disappointed. This is still baseball. The best team will lose many, many games. We are still the best team right now. Let’s knock out a good pitcher tomorrow.
woah

Funny
Patterson played this whole year at 2B but he’s been brought up to play a little in LF
eamus-catuli - June 13, 2008
Yeah.
We lose our left fielder and the Cubs call up a second baseman and a first baseman. Rather inscrutable.
cwyers - June 13, 2008
lol.
I see your point, cwyers. But I thought you liked Patterson not too long ago? I remember me and you being on the same page with him.. maybe I’m wrong though.
Unique - June 13, 2008
I'm probably Patterson's biggest supporter not named Josh77.
But he’s an odd choice to replace Soriano at the very least.
cwyers - June 13, 2008
Well I've been a supporter of him also.
Guess that makes 3 of us. I’m trying to figure out why the Cubs don’t take a look at him at second and throw DeRosa around.
Wasn’t DeRosa supposed to be a stop-gap FOR Patterson?
Unique - June 13, 2008
Patterson hasn't been performing well enough...
...to make anyone forget Mark DeRosa, who’s having a career year. But Patterson is certainly preferable to Mike Fontenot.
cwyers - June 13, 2008
I guess;
But he has had a small sample size, we shall see how he performs since Lou keeps putting him in there though.
And anyone is more preferable to Mike Fontenot.

iluvryno - June 13, 2008
Damn
This is where I miss Ward.
Geo4MVP - June 13, 2008
We had Scott Downs
He was a Cubs prospect until he got traded. Nowadays he’s a serviceable lefty out of the pen like Eyre.
eamus-catuli - June 13, 2008
Dude
Please stop
carmen_fanzone - June 13, 2008
Why is everyone jumping all over this guy?
That was a legit comment about the pitcher in the game
El Borto - June 13, 2008
So, Marquis pinch-runs for Soto, and then Blanco pinch-hits for Edmonds.
Okay then.
cwyers - June 13, 2008
Odd move
Did Edmonds get injured?
Geo4MVP - June 13, 2008

Rudey - June 13, 2008
BLANCO ph for Edmonds
???
carmen_fanzone - June 13, 2008
Well, if you're pulling Soto, Blanco needs to go in at some point.
And Downs is a lefty. So it makes SOME kind of sense.
cwyers - June 13, 2008
Blanco
.500 against Downs..

Why no bunt??
Itchy - June 13, 2008
Blanco strikes out
why not Johnson there or Cedeno?
carmen_fanzone - June 13, 2008
Because if you use Cedeno you're burning three bench players for one play.
You’re already comitting to using Blanco and Johnson when you pull Soto and Edmonds.
cwyers - June 13, 2008
Um, okay, let me rephrase that...
...why not Johnson there? LOL.
carmen_fanzone - June 13, 2008

DeRo isn't on top of his game right now
eamus-catuli - June 13, 2008

Lou
over managing this whole game.
Unique - June 13, 2008
Yep.
As often as he gets the chance.
cwyers - June 13, 2008
not really
the only reason why he bought in blanco is because he was hitting 500 against him.
Geo4MVP - June 13, 2008
Which is essentially meaningless.
cwyers - June 13, 2008
It is.
I don’t understand it. I just don’t.
Unique - June 13, 2008
The reason
I said Reed would pinch hit, is because Lou often does things like this. Matchups are over-rated sometimes.
Unique - June 13, 2008
Cedeno hits an extremely high chopper off the plate and is out at 1st, inning over.
Rudey - June 13, 2008
dammit
so whats the sub situation? derosa in left, blanco behind the plate, who else?
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 13, 2008
Cedeno to 2nd
Rudey - June 13, 2008
most likely
Rudey - June 13, 2008

So Reed PH's for Hoff in the 9th
I hope we don’t go extras….that would mean DeRo to 1B, Johnson to Left
carmen_fanzone - June 13, 2008
If Lou's willing to PH for Hoffpauir with Reed Freaking Johnson...
...then what the hell is the point of having him on the team?
cwyers - June 13, 2008
Lou loves the lefties
carmen_fanzone - June 13, 2008
That's interesting.
cwyers - June 13, 2008
Well, hold em

Well........
I have been sitting here thinking about what just happened. I figure that he is saving Reed Johnson to bat in Hoffpauir space in the 9th.
louslovechild - June 13, 2008

3-2
we need some bats seeing as we plan on doing this whole thing with bats. Otherwise…we need to trade for another starter.

Bump Bailey - June 13, 2008
Not saying that
one of the best in the NL
But i want a WS team! Playoffs are won with pitching.
Rudey - June 13, 2008
We lead the NL in ERA
carmen_fanzone - June 13, 2008
the blue jays have a great pitching staff
but another starter would be great. although it is really nice to see gallagher progress. how deep did he go tonihgt?
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 13, 2008
bout 5 innings I think

God we need to be huge..
Rudey - June 13, 2008

bluekoolaide - June 13, 2008

Geo4MVP - June 13, 2008
Well, tommorow
Geo4MVP - June 13, 2008

Shanghai Badger - June 13, 2008
And we have Marquis
sue369 - June 13, 2008
If he pitches..
like he did last time out, I’ll be happy..
Bump Bailey - June 13, 2008
17 LOB
yuck
Geo4MVP - June 13, 2008
Brutal
Our offense needs to wake-up in a hurry
bluekoolaide - June 13, 2008
no. 11
Shanghai Badger - June 13, 2008
no 19
I stand corrected…19. Look up in yahoo.
Geo4MVP - June 13, 2008
no again. 11 with two out
19 would be 2/inning with one with the bases loaded. that is NOT what happened
Shanghai Badger - June 13, 2008
then yahoo is messed up
Lol.
Geo4MVP - June 13, 2008
17 would be almost 2 per inning
the ESPN box considers LOB with less than 2 out. The total with 2 out was 11.
Shanghai Badger - June 13, 2008
Oh OK
Then that is also correct.
Geo4MVP - June 13, 2008
still bad, though
the 6th inning was what did it.
Shanghai Badger - June 13, 2008
Gameday
shows 11 LOB
bubbamike the one and only - June 13, 2008
Followed yahoo
Geo4MVP - June 13, 2008
Milwaukee down 9-2
MiCubsFan - June 13, 2008
10-2 now
I am watching it on EI… at least that is something
LT - June 13, 2008
YAY!
MiCubsFan - June 13, 2008
We need
our leader to step up, D-Lee. Our offense is Jim Edmonds or bust lately.
I never thought I would ever say that.
Unique - June 13, 2008
Lee needs to snap out of his funk.
but i wouldn’t say “edmonds or nothing” we scored 7 the other day with mroe than him. stop being so gloomy! :-)
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 13, 2008
I was going
by the last 2 days. lol.
Unique - June 13, 2008
D-Lee is killing us in the 3 hole
What’s it going to take to make a change?
bluekoolaide - June 13, 2008
alot more
cause hes there to stay for quite some time.
with good reason!
Rudey - June 13, 2008
Huh...
You’re kidding right?
Bump Bailey - June 13, 2008
Philly still beatin the dirty birds 14-1
MiCubsFan - June 13, 2008
well, at least no ground lost today.. thats a big plus
MiCubsFan - June 13, 2008
I want to be the first to say that we lost this game in the 1st.
All Hoffpauir has to do in the 2 hole is move Theriot over. That is it. He was overmatched all night, and I am assuming that he will see the field again only as a pinch hitter. That is it. Certainly not hitting second. He made contact with the ball 1 time on a foul ball.
Lou did a poor job tonight. I love him like my drunk uncle, but bad. More than willing to empty the bench tonight, except when Soto was the tying run and cannot score on a soft single.
louslovechild - June 13, 2008
Well, he's not perfect
He will make mistakes, just like any other manager.
Geo4MVP - June 13, 2008
Yeah
I don’t see all the fasination with Hoffpauir. He is a AAA all-star .. at best.
Unique - June 13, 2008
Exactly
That’s why Lou pinch hit Reed Johnson for him. They thought he would be effective, but they thought wrong.
Geo4MVP - June 13, 2008
it was ONE GAME
against a good pitching team. Seriously. Guys. My gosh. You can look bad with one at bat without being writen off.
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 13, 2008
+10
carmen_fanzone - June 13, 2008
Yeah, but Hoffpauir's only real accomplishment...
...so far was his hitting in spring training this year. He’s been very underwhelming as a hitter in the minors for a first baseman.
cwyers - June 13, 2008
he hit fine in houston
earlier this season. i’m not saying he’s an allstar or anything, but you can’t base everything a guy is off of one game.
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 13, 2008
I don't think judging a guy off of three games is an improvement...
...over judging him off of one game. The totality of Micah Hoffpauir’s career is essentially a guy that isn’t really good at anything having to do with baseball – hitting, fielding or baserunning. He plays only one defensive position, the easiest around. He’s not actually a GOOD hitter, at least so far as his minor league numbers would indicate.
If you need a guy to hit for about the league average and play first base, then sure, Hoffpauir’s your guy. I’m just not sure that any team, much less ours, really needs that.
cwyers - June 13, 2008
So dont judge him yet!?!??!?
Rudey - June 13, 2008
Why not judge him yet?
I’m just one guy on the Internet with opinions. I have years of minor league stats and a robust set of minor league park factors and translations to work with. I don’t see what the problem is with looking at the factual record and drawing conclusions from it is.
cwyers - June 13, 2008
hehe
i dont think hes good yet
But from your reply it seemed as if you were syaing it doesnt make sense to judge someone off 1 game or 3 games, hence “why judge him”
Rudey - June 13, 2008
He meant judge him on his body of work...
His minor league track record is more telling than a handful of MLB games.
SouthernCub - June 14, 2008
Agreed..
I wouldn’t think he wil be here after interleague play, but ya never know with Lou..
Bump Bailey - June 13, 2008
you never know
just give him more than one game.
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 13, 2008
He's got at least 2 more weeks...
and should get a lot of AB’s against RH pitching..
Bump Bailey - June 13, 2008
Im talking about today
He was overmatched by the Jays pitching.
Geo4MVP - June 13, 2008
lou looks like he's testing things out
He knows that the offense is struggling and, with Soriano out, he’s not sure what he has right now. I hope to god we’ve seen the last of Hoffpauir as a #2 hitter.
And you’re exactly right about the first inning. I had a very bad feeling when Burnett got out of it without giving up a run-pitchers tend to settle down after shaky first innings.
bluekoolaide - June 13, 2008
Philly 17-1
MiCubsFan - June 13, 2008
That made me smile to see that score tonight.
Madison Cub Fan - June 13, 2008
Cards coming back...
17-2 now…:)
Bump Bailey - June 13, 2008
K
im off!
I wanna see some big runs tommorow against Halladay!
(wishful thinking)
Rudey - June 13, 2008
Bye!
we’ll cheer extra hard without you!
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 13, 2008
Okay
I know we lost. But we lost to a decent team on the road with our rookie pitcher on the mound. Stop it everyone. Its one game, and we’ll get ‘em tomorrow. Please?
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 13, 2008
exactly and we lost n ground either...
MiCubsFan - June 13, 2008
Their pitching is sick
But their hitting sucks. Let’s get their ace tomorrow.
Geo4MVP - June 13, 2008
their offense isn't great
you’re right. we need to play well tomorrow.
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 13, 2008
Night all!
MiCubsFan - June 13, 2008
One-run games
What’s our record this year?
sweetswinger - June 13, 2008
I dunno.
better than it was at this time last year.
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 13, 2008
11-9
carmen_fanzone - June 13, 2008
Not too bad...
I’ll take it.
Bump Bailey - June 13, 2008
We have a great record
and that gives Lou a chance to check out guys like Hoff and EPat and see what they can do before things get tight.
bubbamike the one and only - June 13, 2008
Game
My thoughts…. Couple opportunities where i wished Sori was in there, but thats something the cubs are going to have to deal with for the next 4-6 weeks….
hokiefan0705 - June 13, 2008
We'll be fine...
...once again, we were in the game until the very end. Had opportunities, need to take advantage of them the rest of the weekend.
carmen_fanzone - June 13, 2008
EXACTLY
finally someone else who doesn’t feel the need to lose their mind over one game.
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 13, 2008
Must be the Purdue background...
lol
carmen_fanzone - June 13, 2008
Hey know, don't be knocking us Boilermakers!!
Itchy - June 13, 2008
No Knock
I bleed old gold and black! How did you take it as a knock?
carmen_fanzone - June 13, 2008
When you leave 11 guys on base
you can’t expect to win. Someone has to step up and pick up those runners. That’s why we lost tonight, not because of pitching and not because of what Lou did in the 8th. DLee is killing us in the 3 spot is another problem.
bubbamike the one and only - June 13, 2008
?
did Anyone else want to see edmonds bat in the 8th besides me?
hokiefan0705 - June 13, 2008
wasn't a lefty in for Toronto?
Edmonds is horrible against lefties
carmen_fanzone - June 13, 2008
Okay I'm off
See you guys tomorrow. maybe all of you won’t be so gloomy! :-) Night.
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 13, 2008
G'nigt cubbiegirl
Bump Bailey - June 13, 2008
Gloomy?
Who’s gloomy? How could you be gloomy? I’m normally the gloomy type, but tonight all you can be is disappointed. This is still baseball. The best team will lose many, many games. We are still the best team right now. Let’s knock out a good pitcher tomorrow.
bms - June 13, 2008
You win some you lose some
The object is to win more than anyone else and to be the last team standing at the end of the year.
bubbamike the one and only - June 13, 2008
+1
As is often said here, it’s a marathon, not a sprint..
Bump Bailey - June 13, 2008
