David couldn't make it to the game yesterday -- he works during the day. However, he sent his "apprentice" (as she put it to me). Here's her work:

1948-style vendor's uniform (those plastic bottles weren't around then, though!)

The Lakeview Baseball Club gets into the spirit of the day (the first two "00"s though... maybe they should have covered them?)

Hero #1 of the day, Jim Edmonds... excellent view of the throwback uniform

Hero #2, Reed Johnson, gets hit by Jeff Ridgway's pitch in the 11th with the bases loaded, winning the game

Quite a talented apprentice! Thanks, Donna!

thank you for not saying "First"

High socks
I wish everyone would always wear them. They look so much nicer – so much more like….baseball.
Aaaaand I’ll out-nerd myself and say that Woody looked awesome in them, not to mention in pants that actually fit him. There, I’m done.
Sarah Hope - June 13, 2008
When really will you be done?
Still trolling I see.
Tom Mason - June 13, 2008
Is there a history here?
Weird…

Ha
How is Sarah a troll?
Hammer - June 13, 2008
Long, frizzy hair?
Lives under a bridge?
neverAcquiesce - June 13, 2008
Exactly.
Sarah’s never exhibited trollish behavior in any thread I’ve seen, though she almost caused a blog riot when she posted this pic of her, um, shirt.
gary varsho - June 13, 2008
"this"? I don't see anything
northsider - June 13, 2008
Shirt?
What shirt?
Bump Bailey - June 13, 2008
She posted a picture of herself
Well mostly just her shirt, i think it said Kerrys wife or soemthing.
Hammer - June 13, 2008
Oh.
It’s this.
Why was there a blog riot?
northsider - June 13, 2008
Read the whole thread.
I didn’t mean “riot” in the negative sense, just that that pic was the source of some pretty risque comments.

D'OH
gary varsho - June 13, 2008
Were you on the "Dang it, he's not Joe Girardi" gravy train?
I was kind of split. I wanted Girardi but was kind of excited about Piniella, even though I was a little afraid that he would be too much of an old man coot who repeated all of Dusty’s mistakes. For the most part, Lou seems to care about OBP and all that newfangled glitzy-goo, but some things that he’s stubborn on can be frustrating.
northsider - June 13, 2008
Yeah,
I was kind of split, too, but I’m pretty happy with the Pinella hire, overall.

WEAR THE SHIRT—-you never know.
Hammer - June 13, 2008
That's a good call...
Who knows, it might feed to his ego.
Sarah Hope - June 13, 2008
Does Kerry
even have an ego to feed? I think that is my favorite thing about the guy. He doesn’t seem to care about how he is doing as long as the team is doing well.
Kerry deserves this season more than anything and I think it means the world to him that he is actually able to contribute in the way that he is. It is kinda odd though that the years that Kerry has been able to contribute (1998, 2003, and 2008) are the years that the Cubs have been competitive.
gwood - June 13, 2008
Oh no,
I didn’t mean that negatively… I meant like, hey there’s a girl with a shirt that says she’s my wife… ...yay…....
Sarah Hope - June 13, 2008
I didn't think you meant it negatively
but your comment reminded me why I like Kerry so much.
I for some reason consciously avoided writing ”. . . why I like Wood so much.” to avoid the softball TWSS.
gwood - June 13, 2008
The bad thing Sarah

Dan

But Locke is dead....
carmen_fanzone - June 13, 2008
...is he?
What will happen if he is returned to the island? Do you think he is wearing high socks in the casket?
coral - June 13, 2008
Nope.
Notice the name on the coffin: Jeremy Bentham. When Bentham died, his corpse was preserved in a cupboard at Oxford, behind glass. His head was removed and a wax replica was put in it’s place, with the real head displayed by the feet. Finally, the dessicated skin was removed, the skelton was redressed in Bentham clothes, and is now on display with the wax head, like so:

It’s called an “autoicon,” and that’s what’s in the casket, not Locke’s actual corpse. It’s another one of Ben and Locke’s tricks.
gary varsho - June 13, 2008

The picture of Reed getting hit
it’s interesting that NOBODY in the crowd seems to realize what is happening. Nobodies arms are up in victory…no hands to mouths covering up the gasps…..
Maybe they are stunned? But all of them??? Aren’t the people who sit down there typically the season ticket holders that know the game best?
Maybe the picture is taken a half second before he’s hit, but it doesn’t look like it. What do the rest of you think?
iluvryno - June 13, 2008
I think the reaction came a second after the picture
Even DeRo is just standing there like the crowd.
Fishbone2 - June 13, 2008
probably because
it looked like the pitch was a passed ball at first and then you realize (at least on tv) that reed got hit. Great move by Lou to put reed in that spot…. he will always take a pitch for the team
cubbiefanTN - June 13, 2008
He is
an RBI machine this year. He always seems to come up big with guys on base.
qccub - June 13, 2008
Even Reed responded oddly
he started to make his way toward 1st base until it dawned on him.
I really, really like Reed. Can we keep him ?
coral - June 13, 2008
Oh I
think we should.
sue369 - June 13, 2008
Has to touch 1st base to make it offical
cubbierc - June 13, 2008
Right.
Question: do the runners on first and second have to advance as well? I know Reed had to go down and obviously Rami had to come home, but I’m curious about the others.
neverAcquiesce - June 13, 2008
I'm pretty sure they do.
Remember Merkle’s Boner. I said boner. (giggling)

heck of a ball game...
didn’t that win feel great after losing soriano the night before. i noticed as i left work that the cubs were down 2-1 in the eigth and decided to catch the end of the game on dvr instead of listening to pat and ron! i just knew (as many other fans i suppose) that they were going to tie the game! the team just never gives up, I love it!! and the bullpen, wow…. not giving up any runs despite getting into a significant amount of jams, very impressive. Kerry Wood… again WOW! 2 innings of work, just shows that he’s the right guy for the closer job! His stuff yesterday was ridiculously good….
cubbiefanTN - June 13, 2008

Looks fun. Wish I was there.

Team Chemistry
...playing baseball with joy and verve and poetry
I’ve noticed that a lot of people are talking about how happy this team is and how well they play together. It’s really good to see. There is an intense joy in not only doing something you love and doing it well, but also when you are doing it as part of something larger. The joy everyone feels feeds on itself and affects every aspect of your life. These are world class athletes playing at the top of their game and taking all of us along for the ride. Win or lose, these guys are special. Enjoy every minute of it.
This is my last shot at a winner and for some of the younger guys it could be their only shot.

Interesting is not the word I'd use.
Hoffpauir batting second is really puzzling. (Of course, Hoffpauir batting at all still tends to perplex me.)
cwyers - June 13, 2008
I want to see Hoffpaiur break out his hidden tool
and start stealing some bases now that he’s a tablesetter.
More seriously, playing Hoffpaiur at 1B and Lee at DH is the kind of thing that if done often could ruin Aramis’ gold glove chances and actually get the Cubs thinking about a defensive replacement at SS.

drewishdrewid - June 13, 2008
I know they want to give D-Lee some "rest"
But… you lose his glove big time, with Hoff at 1B.
Lou can always take Hoff out of the game in the late innings for defense, and move Lee to 1B.
The DH is allowed to move to a position… right?
SackMan - June 13, 2008
I don't believe so.
cwyers - June 13, 2008
Stupid American League...
SackMan - June 13, 2008
I guess that means we can't let Soto DH at all
Then you have no back-up catcher on the bench.
SackMan - June 13, 2008
Let me clarify.
You can move a DH to a position; in that event, the pitcher now bats in the spot in the lineup where the player who the DH replaced batted.
