COOPERSTOWN, New York -- This will be a different sort of game thread; our data provider has not given us any direct information, so there's no "complete coverage" box at the top of this post, and since so far there's no information available on who will be the starting pitchers, I can't post a pitcher box or stats for the minor leaguers who will participate. The list of Cub minor leaguers who will be in Cooperstown today is as follows:
Junior Lake, Cesar Salazar, Bryan Jost, John Contreras, Robinson Chirinos, George Matheus, Alvaro Sosa, Dwayne Kemp, and Kevin Soto, and pitchers Yohan Gonzales, Julio Pena, Rogelio Carmona, Miguel Sierra, Jeff Antigua, Luke Sommer, and Carlos Rojas.
As noted in one of the threads yesterday, most of these guys will have to buy a ticket to ever get into the Hall of Fame. The only one I've ever seen play before is Chirinos, who has been in a couple of spring training games I've seen. Meanwhile, the Padres don't have a list of players called up on their website, but they did call up their top prospect, Chase Headley; he'll be activated for the Padres/Yankees series beginning tomorrow, and will also play today.
Anyway, this is for general discussion today -- try to be nice about this game. I am well aware that the story told of the creation of baseball in Cooperstown in 1839 by Abner Doubleday is a myth, created more than 100 years ago to provide the pastoral background to the game that people seemed to want at the time. As myths go, it's pretty harmless. If baseball wanted to honor its actual past, the Hall of Fame would be in Hoboken, New Jersey, where on June 19, 1846 the first game with set rules was played.
But it's not, and I'm here, and so are the Cubs and Padres, and today is about fun, honoring the past, and having an enjoyable afternoon. Here's some history of this game from the HoF website.
The biggest problem today may be the weather:
Today: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after noon. Some of the storms could be severe, with damaging winds. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 75. Southwest wind between 8 and 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Today's game is on WGN; for the rest of the very abbreviated MLB schedule see the MLB.com Mediacenter.
MLB.com Gameday (2007 version; I'm not 100% sure this one will work for this game, but am posting it anyway)
MLB.com Gameday (2008 version - this one definitely works, as it has a preview up already)
Today's overflow comment threads will post at 2:15 pm and 3:15 pm CT.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

If nothing else it
will be fun to see some of our minor league players play that most of would never get the chance to see.
GO CUBS!!!

Maybe this would be a good game to see Prior throw a few towels

Pretty much everyone around the league has the day off today.
Booooooriiinnng.

I wonder....
....how long they will wait it out if the game’s delayed because of rain.
carmen_fanzone - June 16, 2008
I'm guessing not too long, since the result is meaningless.
Right now it’s not raining and the sun is out. Hope that holds up till late afternoon.

Is it Monday already?
Also I’m confused. This game doesn’t count in the standings correct?
slocs55 - June 16, 2008
This game doesn't count right?
wrigleyrocker12 - June 16, 2008
No...
...Just an exhibition.
Fishbone2 - June 16, 2008
Not sure I am going to pay much attention to this one.
Hopefully the starters come out healthy from their 1 AB 1 inning of play.

Problems Solved
If they had made this the “Hockey Hall of Fame Game” everyone could have stayed in Toronto and they could have closed the roof to avoid the rain.

Sidenote not worthy of a seperate post
It seems like the entire Chicago media is in a fight with one another. North and Teddy. Jay with everyone. Murp with Boers and Bernstein have always disliked each other.
I wish Lawrence Holmes would get a show. All this crap is starting to annoy me with these ego driven media members. I feel like every media member in this town has an underlying motive which doesn’t allow them to be objective. I know I shouldn’t bring it up if it annoys me but it appears there really isn’t much to talk about today.
slocs55 - June 16, 2008
Lawrence Holmes has a show.
It’s called “The Me Show.” Check out the Score’s site for the times.
gary varsho - June 16, 2008
I know that,
I’m takling about an everyday show where he has a partner. I think very few people can have a solo show and no one at the score is capable, Holmes is the closest I think. The only guy that ever pulled it off in my mind was Dan Patrick.
slocs55 - June 16, 2008
Holmes is good, IMO.
But I can see how he’d benefit from a partner, as he tends to lapse into monologue a lot and ignores callers. Waddle and Silvie on AM 1000 is the only show I can listen to from beginning to end.
gary varsho - June 16, 2008
Agreed, they are good

On the way into work this morning, 720 announced that there’s no WGN radio coverage for today’s game.

Once through the order...then get them guys on the next flight to Florida
Cedeno at ss, Hamster at 2b, The Hoff at 1B, EPat in LF, Hank at C. 8 minor league pitchers should do it for pitching, unless Lou wants to get Marmol in there for an inning. :)
I feel like we’re back in spring training.
carmen_fanzone - June 16, 2008
The Usual Suspects
Where did they find these guys? I’m still looking forward to watching, but I wish they had brought some of the top prospects like Samardzija, Vitters, Colvin, etc…

Only Way Game Could Work
This is the last year for this game. The only way it could be interesting would be to have MLB teams with affiliates in the International League and Eastern League to play in this game. You could see good AAA and AA players that way. That’s a moot point now as 2008 will the mark the end of the Hall of Fame game.

One of the best trips ever
I couldn’t care less if Doubleday or Cartwright or whomever “invented” baseball. The HOF in Cooperstown is a special place and EVERYONE who says they’re a baseball fan should go one day.
Al, as usual, I am completely jealous. :)
Let’s all take this opportunity to celebrate the fact that we are fans of the best sport ever invented and the best franchise to ever put on a uniform.
GO CUBS!!!!!

Just like old times....
I’m surprised you didn’t mention that former Cub “Flash” Gordon blew the game yesterday with a 10th inning error in the Phils-Cards game.
salparadise23 - June 16, 2008
I think Utley was charged with the errors, not Gordon.
gary varsho - June 16, 2008
Tough E for Utley...
...as the throw was right there. Gordon’s claimed that he never saw the throw…definitely made for a strange-looking play.
Shawon O Meter - June 16, 2008
One E each
sez ESPN box score.
cocknfire - June 16, 2008
Ah, they changed it, then.
Last night, ESPN was reporting it as two errors on Utley. The change was in order, IMO, though.
gary varsho - June 16, 2008
It was a tough way to lose a game...
but that play is a weird one anyway…and to have it happen twice in one game is even stranger. You just don’t see the 4-1 putout that often.
santoswoodenlegs - June 16, 2008
Just a thought:
The team left Toronto early this morning and landed in Albany roughly before 9 a.m. CDT. http://flightaware.com/live/flight/UAL9907
This game is a detriment to the overall team, as everybody had to travel. Also, jetlag may begin to rear its ugly head after two takeoffs/landings. I’d hate it if the team shows signs of fatigue in the upcoming series because of this exhibition shindig.
P.S. It’s good to be back in Chicago and I’m saddened to read 720AM doesn’t have the game.
chilango2 - June 16, 2008
Well the busy travel day certainly sucks
But the term jetlag applies to the difficulty dealing with time zone changes and having your sleep schedule thrown off.
El Borto - June 16, 2008
Yes!
But, in a broader sense, it can be used as how you tire, as the pressure changes affect you enough to feel exhausted.
However, El Borto, you’re 100 percent right. My apologies for lack of clarity.
chilango2 - June 16, 2008
Idea for next Hall of Fame Game
Why not use recently retired players for the game? It would probably draw more interest than a bunch a minor leaguers playing.
Mordecai - June 16, 2008
I'd like to see Clemens pitching to Sosa and Palmeiro...
that would be good theater.
santoswoodenlegs - June 16, 2008
I'd love to see Jose Canseco...
...go 0 for 5 with 5 HBPs.
“Not the face! Not the face!”
daver - June 16, 2008
Remind me again why we're playing an exhibition game
in the middle of the season? I’m not necessarily trying to bash the game, just don’t understand why the game wasn’t played after the WS or during spring training.
cocknfire - June 16, 2008
My thoughts exactly.
Remember that great line from Seinfeld: “We’re trying to have a civilization here, George!” Well, we’re trying to win a division here, Bud! (And, yes, I know this is the last Hall of Fame game, but that doesn’t make it any less annoying.)
daver - June 16, 2008
Game would probably be a lot better received generally
and might have survived if it had been played post-WS. Think about it. One more chance for fans to get their baseball fix.
OR
First Spring Training game, get it nationally televised, first chance for said fix.
Instead, you have a match-up that (a) few care about and (b) just pisses off fans and players of any contending team playing in it.
Gee. Wonder why it had trouble.
cocknfire - June 16, 2008
How about if Bud...
arbitrarily decides to add one more round of playoffs to which ever league plays the HOF game? The winner gets an automatic 1 game playoff game at the conclusion of the season against the Wildcard team! Then mlb baseball could market the HOF game as “THIS TIME…IT COUNTS A WHOLE BUNCH!”
santoswoodenlegs - June 16, 2008
And if it's a tie
They BOTH get to play the Wild Card team.
You could be onto something here, SWL.
cocknfire - June 16, 2008
LOL, not bad.
I’ve been trying to come up with a system under which, at a given point in the season, the two teams with the lowest winning percentage in each league would have to forego a mutual off day to play the HOF game. I mean, come on, like the Mariners and Rockies have anything better to do?
daver - June 16, 2008
How would you
decide who gets to play in the HoF game each year?
neverAcquiesce - June 16, 2008
Dude, you just...
daver - June 16, 2008
Reddevil - June 16, 2008
Awww, so cute.
sue369 - June 16, 2008
Leagues swap every year, and teams rotate
backwards alphabetically. The A’s play the Yakees, then the Astros play the Rockies. After the list is exhausted, the next letter in the name is used. If the winner of the HOF game is a playoff team at the end of the year….then the loser of the game get’s the playoff game. If both teams are playoff teams….then the Yankees are automatically awarded a playoff spot and home-field throughout. Easy.
santoswoodenlegs - June 16, 2008
LOL
Ihatethecards - June 16, 2008
So...
a team can potentially lose the HoF game, play poorly all year, and still get a shot at the playoff’s simply because the team that beat them already made it?
Sounds fishy. And your Yankee love angers me.
neverAcquiesce - June 16, 2008
Two things...
1. Yes
2. This was Bud’s idea remember?

According to Gammons, we let the Mariners know that we want in on Bedard, and the Padres that we’re interested in Maddux/Wolf.
And Cleveland scouted our minor league/major league team. Gammons also said that the Indians will probably trade him sooner rather than later.

Jerry Springer is actually a very intelligent man.
Maury used to be a serious journalist.
All are more qualified than Katie Couric for her job.
puckishcubsfan - June 16, 2008
Is this the same Jerry Springer that paid for the 'services' of a young lady with a check?

ballhawk - June 16, 2008
They should rename it

Lou In Blue - June 16, 2008
It's the only fitting way to respect the HOF game.
santoswoodenlegs - June 16, 2008
Someone's gotta do it, sure as hell isn't MLB
Lou In Blue - June 16, 2008
He'll love it
sue369 - June 16, 2008
US Open thread
Tiger and Rocco +2 thru 12
mondello58 - June 16, 2008
So what happens if they're both tied after 18 today?
Sudden death?
santoswoodenlegs - June 16, 2008
Who kills them?
crazymountain - June 16, 2008
OH, that's Matlock....
crazymountain - June 16, 2008
Battle to the Death.
Two man enter, one man leave.
gary varsho - June 16, 2008

Jayo525 - June 16, 2008
Caddies fight to the death!
Lou In Blue - June 16, 2008
Cancelled for sure?
chilango2 - June 16, 2008
Yep.
gary varsho - June 16, 2008
Matlock? Yeah, ratings weren't high enough.
It’ll live on in syndication forever, though.
daver - June 16, 2008
I axtually liked Matlock. I was probably the only viewer under 100.
puckishcubsfan - June 16, 2008
You have ID?
crazymountain - June 16, 2008
I was weird. I watched Matlock and Murder She Wrote.
puckishcubsfan - June 16, 2008
I think the ratings were not that bad actually.
I was different when I was a teen young adult.
Other kids watched Channel 7 soaps. I watched Guiding Light and Another World.
I watched Matlock, Murder She Wrote and Whos the Boss?
puckishcubsfan - June 16, 2008
Trust me. They were bad.
daver - June 16, 2008
Well as sure
as we can be. But you never know about those jokesters from WGN. Maybe they were pulling our legs.
sue369 - June 16, 2008
Maybe
Lou just wanted more time for Marmol to warm up for his CG shutout.
Jayo525 - June 16, 2008
Brilliant!! That
has to be it.
sue369 - June 16, 2008
Holy mullet.
Check out the winner on the Steve Wilkos show
gary varsho - June 16, 2008
ahh, Steve Wilkos... Cal Ripken's body double.
ballhawk - June 16, 2008
He's the fat Ripken
gary varsho - June 16, 2008
That show gives me the creeps.
Most of WGN outside the Family Guy and the Cubs gives me the creeps.
Especially Jim Belushi.
puckishcubsfan - June 16, 2008
More matlock
....Yes!!!!mondello58 - June 16, 2008
Likely the first time that sentence
has been uttered by someone not named Abe Simpson
gary varsho - June 16, 2008

mondello58 - June 16, 2008
The doctor musta done it.....
crazymountain - June 16, 2008

carmen_fanzone - June 16, 2008

How come schlocky shows never get rained out?
crazymountain - June 16, 2008

ballhawk - June 16, 2008

mondello58 - June 16, 2008

gary varsho - June 16, 2008
Plastic bat....plastic ball......Plastic Surgery!
santoswoodenlegs - June 16, 2008
I think that is all WGN shows......
crazymountain - June 16, 2008
Through 14
Tiger and Rocco knotted up at +1
gary varsho - June 16, 2008
Sounds more like a boxing match
Jayo525 - June 16, 2008
We got a new dog this morning and I wanted to introduce him to the Cubs. (his name is Zambrano by the way) and he was contendedly wagging his tail in my lap and when Maury came on he started growling.
Dog has good taste
(A bichon frise in case anyone was wondering)
puckishcubsfan - June 16, 2008
congrats! great doggie name
Emelie - June 16, 2008
Thanks. He’s perfect and hes sleeping right now.
It was between Zambrano and Dempster for his name. Decided to go with Zambrano because chances of him being around for a very long time are a bit better.
puckishcubsfan - June 16, 2008
Our other dog is named Wrigley and is actually a brother to this one. Same mother dog different dads.
puckishcubsfan - June 16, 2008
there's an obvious joke in there, but I'm going to pass up on it . . . .
Shanghai Badger - June 16, 2008
er, pass on it
Shanghai Badger - June 16, 2008
+1
I passed on the “tail in my lap” reference earlier. I’m afraid about the direction of this thread though. Golfisms are too easy.
Jayo525 - June 16, 2008
then I shouldn't quote the ESPN.com headline I just saw
Yanks’ Wang out at least 6 weeks . . .
Shanghai Badger - June 16, 2008
LOL
sue369 - June 16, 2008
Too easy?
crazymountain - June 16, 2008
Apparently so.
daver - June 16, 2008

mondello58 - June 16, 2008
Looks like Tiger is falling apart.
Zy Toro Young - June 16, 2008
Can you send me his left arm? I need a new one.....
crazymountain - June 16, 2008
I can get his left knee
Zy Toro Young - June 16, 2008
Man, you are a tough negotiator.....
crazymountain - June 16, 2008
we have a Jeff Gillooly sighting...
ballhawk - June 16, 2008
He's completely forgotten...
...to drink his water and eat bananas between swings
carmen_fanzone - June 16, 2008

You can watch it on live online via Usopen.com, ESPN 360, or NBCsports
Jayo525 - June 16, 2008
Dibs on the wifey.
Jayo525 - June 16, 2008
BTW
I wasn’t on BCB all weekend and would like to give Marquis kudos for pitching a great game this weekend (past 2 starts actually), I am pretty hard on him on this site and wanted to give him his due.
Despite saying this I still don’t trust him and know we can’t depend on him in the playoffs.
slocs55 - June 16, 2008
is the game even on?
is there a score?
drewishdrewid - June 16, 2008
baseball game? We're here to talk baseball?
Emelie - June 16, 2008

drewishdrewid - June 16, 2008

crazymountain - June 16, 2008

....Bob Brenly, because of the rainout, just flew back up to Toronto for more Canadian Beer and cigars.
carmen_fanzone - June 16, 2008
False. Bob is putting the finishing touches on
his statue of Ryan Theriot.
gary varsho - June 16, 2008
we missed you in the game thread ---
Brenly criticized Theriot’s fielding yesterday . . . .
Shanghai Badger - June 16, 2008
Eerie.
Is it weird I thought of GV when Brenly went after TheRiot yesterday.
Jayo525 - June 16, 2008
OHHH!!!
Great minds think alike!
daver - June 16, 2008

Jayo525 - June 16, 2008

crazymountain - June 16, 2008
He's also getting a tattoo of "The Riot" on his left thigh...
...but SHHHHHHHHHH!!! no one is supposed to know!
daver - June 16, 2008
I don't EVEN want to know how you know...
ballhawk - June 16, 2008
I wonder if Bob knows Ryans name.\
puckishcubsfan - June 16, 2008
So, up close and personal with Brenley's thigh, eh?
crazymountain - June 16, 2008
Hey, I'm his tailor.
I was fitting him with some garter belts and…aw, hell, I just did it again.
daver - June 16, 2008
Ummmm.....well, I just CAN'T......
crazymountain - June 16, 2008
Now that's a visual.
sue369 - June 16, 2008

Shanghai Badger - June 16, 2008
only division entirely out of action
Shanghai Badger - June 16, 2008
Well, the Red Sox and Yanks are all that matter anyway....
crazymountain - June 16, 2008
Overflow thread now up...
LOL.
carmen_fanzone - June 16, 2008
Marmol actually is the next guest on the Steve Wilco show.
He has to always appear no matter what happened.
“My arm was overused by my boss!” Next on Steve Wilco.
When I was in college I took a broadcasting class and we had to do a parody of a tv show.
We did and Im dating myself Geraldo.
We did “Men Who Are Sox fans and the Cub fans Who Love them”
You saw me in a darkened room and I said
We met in November. We liked the same movies, tv shows, we loved the Bulls and the Bears, my family liked him, his family liked me and then I found out the truth in April
HES A SOX FAN
puckishcubsfan - June 16, 2008
