While we are waiting for Late Night With The Cubs, here are some of the key moments from yesterday's game.
Alfonso Soriano drops Todd Helton's first-inning fly ball...
... but 2B umpire Paul Nauert says, "Nope! You're out!"
... and here's the result, the ball landing on the walkway just behind us in left field, Soriano's 13th HR of the year.
David wrote this caption: "Jim Edmonds giving Kosuke Fukudome and Alfonso Soriano sun blocking tips during a pitching change in the seventh inning."
Ryan Theriot's diving attempt at Jeff Baker's foul ball in the 9th inning. Note the curious little dance Reed Johnson and Aramis Ramirez are doing, too.

Always enjoy the photos ...
Thanks for the daily photograhic recap!
StampMe - June 2, 2008
The reaction of some of the people in bleachers on the first photo is quite a picture
Especially the woman in the left side of the first row.
Madison Cub Fan - June 2, 2008
I had a very similar reaction to that play.
Blue W - June 2, 2008
I think we all did.
Al Yellon - June 2, 2008
I believe my exact words were, "Oh, no...not again!"
That photo is priceless, though. I haven’t seen that many foreheads slapped simultaneously since New Coke.
daver - June 2, 2008
"Oh, no...not again!"
Barf: Waitress! Waitress! What did he order?
Waitress: Oh, he had the special.
Barf: The sp… that’s that I ordered! Change my order to the soup!
Lone Starr: Good move.

Soriano's (mathematically) on pace to score 50+ dingers this season, as well as Lee
I’d guess he’ll reel in about 35-38
NittanyCub - June 2, 2008
13 in 2 months+?
That’s 39, right?
sdrone - June 2, 2008
games played....
he’s dividing the number of games sori’s played (42) to get to 50.14 homers over the course of the season…. that calculation would be correct if there were 120 games left, however the actual pace number is 45.5 homers… based on hitting a homer in 1out of every 3.23 games and there are 105 games left to play. thank god for microsoft excel….
cubbiefanTN - June 2, 2008
Wow, I'm as dense as humid air.
Totally forgot he went on a DL stint with the calf muscle. You’re right; don’t know what I was thinking.
NittanyCub - June 2, 2008
Theriot's play was great -- even if he didn't catch it
I love the hustle in the 9th inning.
AlabamaCubFan - June 2, 2008
I bet
Theriot would say he should have made that catch as he actually over dove the ball. Either way great effort. I like Edmonds reaction after the final out, it was the first time I have every felt I could actually like this guy. Seems like he is starting to have fun.
At the end of games I have found myself saying this team is really special. I know the Cubs will have a few bumps along the way but they currently have the “it” factor. This has been a ton of fun so far.
slocs55 - June 2, 2008
I heard DeRosa got his hand stepped on on that play...
...but I guess it wasn’t serious, eh?
malicedoom - June 2, 2008
He's fine.
Helton tried to do the old pop-up slide, stopped about 6 inches short of the bag, popped up anyway, and came down right on Derosa’s hand. Derosa seemed fine, though, and remained in the game until the 8th.
gary varsho - June 2, 2008
I'll bet Mark...
remembers to keep his bare hand off the base from here on.
chr15 - June 2, 2008
The looks
on the people who are watching Theriot on the ground….they are priceless…!!!
akbeck98 - June 2, 2008
Definitely!
Not to mention Aramis and RJ dancing cheek-to-cheek.

TV question...
I’m in Chicago for business this week (lousy timing), what’s the difference between CSN Chicago and CSN+ as listed for Tuesday and Thursday’s games? Are these stations readily available at most bars? hotels?
cubbiefanTN - June 2, 2008
Bars, probably. Hotels, depends.
CSN+ is just an extra feed that cable/satellite companies will stick somewhere in the lineup for the evening. IIRC, many of the Chicago cable systems will stick the game over the normal CLTV channel’s programming. Others pick some random channel number. I believe that the satellite providers will open up a new channel for the evening to handle the game. I am sure that the bars will know the drill and will have the game on one of their TVs. As for the hotels, if you are staying at a major chain that provides limited channel choices (like anything in the Hilton group), you are likely SOL. Heck, I know that the Hilton and Westin in downtown Cincinnati don’t even offer the main FSN Ohio feed to guests, so similar Chicago hotels may not even have the main CSN channel. If the hotel offers all analog channels from the area’s cable provider, you are probably in luck.

Qixotl - June 2, 2008
thx!
cubbiefanTN - June 2, 2008
I think Edmonds is saying to Soriano
“You see, if you put the glove on your right hand you might actually catch the ball. Works for me.”
neverAcquiesce - June 2, 2008
Hey Al, I'll be at Wrigley on June 21st
for the game and thought about stopping by to say hi. Where do you sit? In the bleachers? Thought I’d stop by and say hi… You can also email me indivitually on this. We’ll also be in Toronto on the 14th for Jays Cubbies game….
MinnesotaFan - June 2, 2008
Will be in the LF bleachers in the usual spot.
Check your email, too.
Al Yellon - June 2, 2008
I don't really have much to say...
... but it’s GREAT to be a Cubs fan.
I have to wait 3 months to get to see them live at Wrigley, but that’s okay with me. Keep winning so I can watch them clinch the Central on August 29th! 8-)

FABULOUS MONTAGE OF PHOTOS FOR SUNDAY'S GAME!
NO, I’M NOT YELLING, I JUST LIKE TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS. THAT “NEW COKE” ANALOGY WAS AWESOME.
NOW…”TheRiot!!” DUDE…TWO OUTS, TOP OF NINTH, KERRY the WOOD IS PITCHING AND “TheRiot” IS THROWING HIS BODY OUT THERE LIKE THAT IN FOUL TERRITORY? BELIEVE ME! I APPRECIATE GOOD HUSTLE AND HARD EFFORT BUT MAN, IT’S A LONG SEASON AND THIS TEAM HAS A GREAT MIX OF PLAYERS WHO ARE ON A STREAK. “TheRiot” IS GOING TO HAVE TO BE A LITTLE MORE CAREFUL. DON’T TAKE THE CHANCE OF TAKING YOURSELF OUT OF THE GAME OR A PORTION OF THE SEASON IN A SITUATION LIKE THAT. (AGAIN, WINNING THE GAME, TOP OF THE NINTH W/TWO OUTS!!)
I HOPE LOU OR ONE OF THE OTHER VETERANS GIVES HIM SOME ADVICE. GOOD INITIATIVE…BAD JUDGMENT.
LOUtheMETandNATSfan - June 2, 2008
all caps, didn't read

o.k. no caps this time.
what do you mean, didn’t read? didn’t want to or couldn’t?

cozmotaylor123 - June 2, 2008
brother i understand...however
baseball is a marathon, not a sprint. don’t screw up the chemistry by getting injured in a situation where the ballgame is almost over.
LOUtheMETandNATSfan - June 2, 2008
Almost is the key word.
Wood hits the next guy maybe, then gives up a two-run shot. Boom, we gotta bat again. A lack of hustle then becomes that much more important. You never know in baseball.
neverAcquiesce - June 2, 2008
yep...similar to the alou/bartman moment
sorry to keep bringing up the past, but you make a good point. after that play, things seemed to domino for the worst.
i’ll give Theriot the hustle w/two outs in the playoffs, just not this early in the regular season. still, the guys is bad a$$
LOUtheMETandNATSfan - June 2, 2008
Sigh.
Bartman-Alou is not why the Cubs lost that game.

LOUtheMETandNATSfan - June 2, 2008
Just winding you up, mate.

neverAcquiesce - June 2, 2008
Thanks for dropping the caps.
I, for one, enjoy when fans of other teams contribute comments—as long as they’re not obviously trolling, of course. So, seriously, thanks for dropping by.
I caught a bit of the Mets/Dodgers game on ESPN last night and was dutifully impressed by Santana. I found it a little odd that Juan Pierre (a former Cub) seemed to be the only opposing hitter to apparently have him figured out. Part of me wondered whether Santana was just toying with the Dodgers by giving up hits to Pierre. Anyhoo, feel free to chime in with an “NL East perspective” anytime.
daver - June 2, 2008
One thing is for certain
Santana is notorious for bringing his “A” game after the All Star break.
Juan Pierre is heating up. I think one thing that Pierre does for himself is that, when he gets on base, he steals the heck out of them. When he does that, he gives himself more confidence. More confidence means better hitting, better hitting means better OBS. So to make a long story short his performance just perpetuates itself into better performance all around.
LOUtheMETandNATSfan - June 2, 2008
Santana
I am up here in Santana’s old stomping ground, and you are right about him after the All-Star break. His best is yet to come, which is kinda a scary thought since he has been pretty good of late.
He is one of the pitchers that it is a joy to watch. One of my favorite things in baseball (except when it happens to the Cubs) is when the pitcher induces a hitter to make a goofy swing or otherwise makes the hitter just look lost at the plate. Santana is one of the best at that. His change-up is just nasty.
gwood - June 2, 2008
OT - Allow me to vent for a second
I HATE ESPN! I am done with it. If I have to watch another Manny Ramirez montage I’m going to puke! Everything they show is catered to how great the Red Sox are and how much they love Manny Ramirez. I turned it on a couple times this weekend to see some highlights of other games and all I got was a Red Sox love fest. When they aren’t talking about the Sox they were talking about the Yankees or the Mets. This east coast biased thing wasn’t as noticeable in the past but it’s getting borderline obsessive. I’m through with it…. Thanks for listening!
Lou In Blue - June 2, 2008
On the bright side,
other than covering Griffey’s try for 600, the Cubs were the top story on SportsCenter.
neverAcquiesce - June 2, 2008
I would accept....
“Jimbo the Labrador retriever drops a hot one at the dog show” as the top story other than an east coast team leading off.
Lou In Blue - June 2, 2008
I'm just happy
that Big Brown isn’t based in New England or we’d never hear the end of it.
neverAcquiesce - June 2, 2008
Worse than the Manny thing
is the Joba Chamberlain watch. Big deal, the Yankees are taking a relief pitcher and making him a starter. The Cubs flipping of Dempster/Wood is a lot more interesting than Joba.
On Manny, it is too bad that ESPN runs it into the ground. I may be in the minority here but I like watching Manny play. He’s a first ballot HOF’er. There have been no stories about him and steroids. His career line doesn’t leave a bunch of questions there either. I’m fine with his antics. They add a little color to his personality.
rlpete - June 2, 2008
Agreed on the Chamberlain thing.
Ridiculous overkill. Chamberlain is a great story, but all the ESPN coverage of this non-event is almost making me hope he fails.
Al Yellon - June 2, 2008
o.k. cool ;-)
man, i’ve been on some blogs and people get pretty heated and ridiculous. just testing the waters here.
darn good blog site!
my buddy at work is a huge CUBS fan and he and I listen to Ron and Pat at work sometimes during the game. It’s a riot listening to Ron sometimes.
Ron and Pat are one of the few commentators who can talk about anything during a baseball game and make it interesting. They bring a lot more to the game than just the game.
LOUtheMETandNATSfan - June 2, 2008
Yup.
Pat is a damn good announcer and a HUGE baseball fan. Ron? Just the ultimate Cubs lover who gets to share his joy with the world.
neverAcquiesce - June 2, 2008
"G-D" from Ron?
It sounded to me if he laid the “G-D” one time during the game. That would be unfortunate if he did that. I don’t think even Ron could get that one over.
LOUtheMETandNATSfan - June 2, 2008
once -- his first game as a broadcaster
also dropped a B.S. once in LA
Shanghai Badger - June 2, 2008
Is that it?
I would think Ron would have dropped more than that with as emotional as he tends to get. Although we do seem to get a lot of “gosh darns”.
gwood - June 2, 2008
Ron's first broadcast
As he tells the story, he was preparing his materials for his very first broadcast as a Cub announcer back in 1990 when he spilled coffee all over his papers and uttered a 4-letter word (probably the S-word – can’t remember now). Then he looked and realized it was live on the mike. He thought he was going to be fired before he even started.
danimal15 - June 2, 2008
that was the G-D
referenced in the book he wrote with Randy Minkoff.
The S-bomb was during a beanball/brushback incident during the early/mid-1990’s: “Here comes Frank Pulli, and that’ll put an end to this bulls**t.” Listening on the radio in Madison doing homework late at night. Good times . . .
Shanghai Badger - June 2, 2008
gosh darn all is his favorite phrase I think.
they have made comments numerous times coming out of commerical breaks that if we could hear what they discuss during the commericals…. they’d lose their jobs.
Madison Cub Fan - June 2, 2008
Love Lou's so obvious...
“WHAT THE F*CK ARE YOU DOING?
?” scream out to the umpire on the second-to-last pitch of the game that should have been called for strike 3. I thought the top of his head was going to blow off. Glad it didn’t matter and Edmonds caught the next pitch for the fly-out to end the game.
malicedoom - June 2, 2008
I pretty much said the same thing after that pitch.
That call was RIDICULOUS. I think Lou was still pissed even after the Cubs won the game.
daver - June 2, 2008
Lou
did look really pissed when he came out of the dugout after Edmonds made the catch
gwood - June 2, 2008
Hell to the yeah!
It was ridiculous. Buuuuuuttttt, with the team we have I simply remarked to myself, “Woody’ll still get him.”
neverAcquiesce - June 2, 2008
I think that was a build up from Lou
There were a lot of sliders that Wood threw that could very easily have been called strikes.
gwood - June 2, 2008
Umpire
Apparently it was a minor league umpire filling in for the ump who got injured earlier in the series. I agree his calls were awful, but perhaps the ump’s status had something to do with Lou’s willingness to jump on him for ball and strike calls.
danimal15 - June 2, 2008
why on earth
would they put a minor-league ump behind the plate???
drewishdrewid - June 2, 2008
That does seem an odd choice
they should have put one of the regulars behind the plate even if it was his second game there.
gwood - June 2, 2008
TOO MUCH MANNY BEING MANNY!
Lou In Blue!
Man I agree 100%! However I like what Manny is doing for my fantasy baseball team on ESPN. Speaking of which. ESPN has really gotten to full of itself. They are still the best product for dispensing sports information and highlights to date, however they are beginning to be a nuisance w/so much biased reporting of the larger markets. But that’s just it. The large markets get the coverage.
Be prepared though. The stars are aligning for the CUBS and if they get a World Series win I guarantee you this, ESPN will saturate coverage of the Series AND THE CUBS and the aftermath for a long time.
LOUtheMETandNATSfan - June 2, 2008
Its not even the Cubs
Example. I live here in Denver and last season the Rockies went on their incredible 20 game run and got to the WS. What was the talk about? Red Sox, Red Sox, Red Sox. Reporters came in and interviewed Clint Hurdle before game 1 of the series. A reporter asked “so tell us a bit about your ball club we are not very familiar with them.” Hurdle looked at the guy and said “you should be ashamed of yourselves!”
Holliday was robbed of the MVP last year and Tulowitzski should have been ROY. How can you not at least cover enough of that particular team to know who these guys are
? For shame I say!
Lou In Blue - June 2, 2008
i understand brother...
But as much as I hate to repeat it, the size of the market is going to dictate how much play a team gets.
The only thing that will change that is if a team continues winning. And it’s going to have to be much longer than a year. How long did the BoSox have to wait before winning another series? How many times did they get their hearts broken by the vaunted Yanks? Then look what they did when they finally defeated the Yanks to win that series and then go on to win the big one. It was story book!
Another example is the Rays. Look at what they are doing. And they still hardly get any coverage. If they take two of three from the sox this week, they still probably won’t get “that’ much coverage. They can’t even fill the seats in Tampa! They are going to have to win for a long time before they get play.
LOUtheMETandNATSfan - June 2, 2008
Agreed 100%
Lou In Blue - June 2, 2008
Manny
Last year when Jim Thome hit his 500th it got some, but not much mention on ESPN. And IIRC Thome’s was a walk-off that gave the White Sox a win. Manny hits his and it gets more coverage than than, than, ....well, make up your own headline…

trying to check out METS/CUBS at SHEA in September
Gonna try and do the nostalgia thing and see the Mets play the Cubs at Shea in Sept. Tix might be too tough though.
Has anyone seen the non-sense on Stub-Hub for the last Yanks game w/the Orioles in Yankee stadium?
$1,000,000? are they kidding? for one seat?
LOUtheMETandNATSfan - June 2, 2008
Seriously?
That’s insane. No one will buy that at that price.
You can get decent seats to see that Cubs/Mets series, if you buy them now.
Al Yellon - June 2, 2008
seat
The heck with it. I’m just going to write the check for a million. Definitely worth the money!
danimal15 - June 2, 2008
Lots of choices for Cubs at Mets
Looking at the Mets site right now, there are still loads of seats left for at least Monday (loge reserved near the bases, upper deck seats behind home plate). Being weekday games after Labor Day, the Mets put the series in one of their lower pricing tiers, so you will get decent value as well. I’m already locked in for the first two games and will probably buy tickets for the latter games if the Cubs keep playing this well.
Qixotl - June 2, 2008

gary varsho - June 2, 2008
only if they win
the METS payroll is too huge to keep him on if they don’t win. if he doesn’t make it to the playoffs he’s out.
i would actually think that anything less than an NLCS appearance would do him in
LOUtheMETandNATSfan - June 2, 2008
I agree
I would think most of you Mets fans (and front office) expect the Mets to make the playoffs so I wouldn’t think that making the playoffs would save Randolph’s job.

Typo
I meant “I wouldn’t think that just making the playoffs”.

if he doesn’t AT LEAST win one series in the playoffs. he’s finished.
he can’t be to blame for such aging players. i.e. pedro, alou, el duque and delgado. if he gets to the NLCS w/those guys still everyday players, you gotta give him one more shot next year.

Hart is pitching tomorrow night and Geisler (sp?) is tonight. I was hoping to see Hill pitch. Access to the players is easy in Nashville so if anyone wants me to pass along something or watch for a particular trait, playing wise, let me know.
I was thinking of not wearing any Cub gear and pose an Oriole scout..maybe bring the wife’s hair dryer as a radar gun….

it’s funny you mention that because his competition (Edmonds) supposedly stopped striding altogether and his little surge this past weekend occurred as a result.

I think it was ESPN

But no better time for him to prove his worth than on the road. Especially in San Diego.

Berkman wins NL Player of the Month
Can’t argue with a .471 BA, .553 OBP, 9 HRs, 22 RBIs, and 31 runs. Soriano will just have to play better in June to get the award. :)
