any “game overs” in here after the Cubs went down 3-0 after the 1st inning? or is everyone else like me now, and not worried about a silly 3 runs with this offense?
I hung out outside the player parking this weekend, and after seeing Marmol in street clothes I want his babies EXTRA BAD. I’d post a picture but I can’t figure that out this late.
what just happened? local vegas is showing the padres feed and i cant watch extra innings. they cut away like they lost the feed, when they come back the announcers are talking about how someone in the crowd should get kicked out. what he do?
Len: “Well Bob, you going surfing this week while you’re in SoCal?” Bob: “I don’t think so, considering I havn’t my whole life” Len: insert above quote
seriously just stop. marmol is doing the 8. woody’s got the 9. worry about the big problems. like whose going to take marquis off our hands because he’s been so god awful.
I thought it was headed for an L after that first inning but Zambrano somehow made it through 5 without giving up anything else. I don’t think Marmol is hurting from overuse, I just think he struggles in 9th inning, game on the line situations. He’s confident in the 7th and 8th but gets a little shakey in the 9th.
and we know the 9th is a whole different animal. Everyone is bearing down and trying to be the hero. Leave Marmol where he is, getting us out of jams and setting the table.
for Marmol that messes with his head. He always seems flat coming off the bench versus the bullpen. I think it is a mental thing now as he throws so hard as a one inning guy.
Let’s go for #9 tomorrow.
Wood & Marmol are off tomorrow…it will be up to Eyre & Howry!
I get the walking Pujols stuff…but Jody F’n Geirut. Likewise if Wuertz does his job…Marmol never even has to face the top of the order in the 9th or even come into this game at all..
Lou sometimes drives me crazy with the amount of pitchers he can go through in a game but when your starters can’t go beyond the 5th or 6th it forces your hand. That being said his strategy is working so I can’t really complain.
...the Brewers are sneaking back into the race, and the Astros are starting to slide out of it. I’m still not convinced about the Cardinals, but I worry about the Brewers.
I seriously doubt that Marmol has any complaints about how much he's throwing.
I’m sure he wants to be in the game every day if he could be, and pitch every inning if they’d let him. It’s Lou’s job to be the adult and tell himself no when he has to.
Nice win but my god we cannot keep using the bullpen this much
the starters have only been goin about 6 innings tops, they need to step it up right now especially against weak teams such as san diego and los angeles
The problem with this team (and it’s a nice problem to have) is they’re in almost every game so Lou can’t just let Marquis give up the 8 runs he would if he were allowed 7 innings or hand it over to Wuertz in a blowout loss to eat up innings. As long as the games are close and the starters can’t go deep into games this will be a problem. The good thing is we always have Marshall and Hill ready to come up if we really get stretched too thin.
These are pretty nice things to complain about, were winning games, & close games at that. I agree that this was not BIG z’s finest outing, nor was it Marmol’s, but we still found a way to win; that’s a pretty good sign.
attributing the cubs success to singing of Edmonds? How bout giving credit were credit is due. It’s Gerald Perry even “Jimmy Ballgame” acknowledges that.
I would pick Zambrano; “(8-1) allowed three runs in the first inning before settling down. He legged out three hits to tie his career-high and raise his average to .366. He hit a standup RBI triple that tied the game in the fourth” espn”s words, not mine.
Given that Jason Marquis is starting tomorrow, and Greg Maddux has pitched very well at home. 2 of 3 in SD would be an achievement - I don’t care what the Pads record is. The best I see for this trip is 4-3. To expect more - really optimstic.
The Dodgers are going to play much better at home than they did at Wrigley.
And, I have never been SO wrong about a player....
but Mr. Edmonds is being the Edmonds we hated as a CARD…..damn, I hate being wrong….More power to him….I apologize, Mr. Edmonds….I WAS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Quote from today’s post: ” My brother conveyed a story to me about a game earlier in the season…Eric Gagne was entering the game from the bullpen…and fans started booing him before he even threw a pitch! Yes, I know, it is fun to express your emotions…but can we save it for the opposing team?

Clubhouse Cancer - June 2, 2008

cubfan06 - June 2, 2008
Marmol is eventually gonna close like Rivera
He has HOF stuff. The Cubs are wasting 40+ saves a year by having Demp & now Wood as the closer instead of Carlos
Clubhouse Cancer - June 2, 2008
Or, they're using pitcher's in the roles that best serve the needs of this ballclub.
gary varsho - June 2, 2008
they're using the pitchers they have the most $ invested in
in the marquee roles. it’s not hurting them…yet
Clubhouse Cancer - June 2, 2008
no
its easier to pitch the 9th with nobody on and 0 outs than it is to pitch the 7th or 8th with 2 on 1 out. how is that so difficult to understand?
joeschmitt - June 2, 2008
Exactly.
You use your best reliever(s) in the situations with the highest leverage.
gary varsho - June 2, 2008
that statement might be true
but so what? Woody is a closer because he’s a Cub legend and they have $75M+ invested in him. Period.
Clubhouse Cancer - June 2, 2008

he’s the closer because he’s our 2nd best reliever

If Marquis goes 8 innings, I will refrain from making any more jokes at his expense for the reaminder oft he season, to include the playoffs.

I’m giddy.
Blue W - June 3, 2008
Damn - always interesting, ain't it?
Good night, all! CUBS WIN!!!
malicedoom - June 3, 2008
Big Z player of the game?
C’mon Ronnie…
Bump Bailey - June 3, 2008
Great Win
I thought it was headed for an L after that first inning but Zambrano somehow made it through 5 without giving up anything else. I don’t think Marmol is hurting from overuse, I just think he struggles in 9th inning, game on the line situations. He’s confident in the 7th and 8th but gets a little shakey in the 9th.
LerxstCub - June 3, 2008
yeah and wood is much more reliable in the 9th
(and unlike a bunch of haters on here, i’m not being sarcastic). let’s keep marmol in the trouble spots and wood to pitch the 9th
joeschmitt - June 3, 2008
Yep. Woody is getting in a groove
and we know the 9th is a whole different animal. Everyone is bearing down and trying to be the hero. Leave Marmol where he is, getting us out of jams and setting the table.
Itchy - June 3, 2008

Blue W - June 3, 2008
+2
Woody seems more confident every time out now..
Bump Bailey - June 3, 2008
agreed
sue369 - June 3, 2008
Agreed.
gary varsho - June 3, 2008
I think it is that second inning
for Marmol that messes with his head. He always seems flat coming off the bench versus the bullpen. I think it is a mental thing now as he throws so hard as a one inning guy.
Let’s go for #9 tomorrow.
Wood & Marmol are off tomorrow…it will be up to Eyre & Howry!
LAcarl519 - June 3, 2008
Hopefully, we'll have a big cushion for them!
Itchy - June 3, 2008
Got to stop walking Dudes
I get the walking Pujols stuff…but Jody F’n Geirut. Likewise if Wuertz does his job…Marmol never even has to face the top of the order in the 9th or even come into this game at all..
TheRiot Police - June 3, 2008
True
Lou sometimes drives me crazy with the amount of pitchers he can go through in a game but when your starters can’t go beyond the 5th or 6th it forces your hand. That being said his strategy is working so I can’t really complain.
LerxstCub - June 3, 2008
Very quietly...
...the Brewers are sneaking back into the race, and the Astros are starting to slide out of it. I’m still not convinced about the Cardinals, but I worry about the Brewers.
cwyers - June 3, 2008
How can someone sneak back into a race
When you win 8 games straight?
I know where you are going with this, but still…. = )
IllinoisCubs - June 3, 2008
Dan Plesac is amazing.
“Lou has done a great job of spreading the wealth around, and not going to the same guys.”
Really?
He has?
I mean, you seriously believe that, Dan Plesac?
cwyers - June 3, 2008
Ronny Cedeno would like to have some speaks with Mr. Plesac.
gary varsho - June 3, 2008
He was talking about the BULLPEN!
cwyers - June 3, 2008
Yeah, didn't understand that.
I suppose Ryan Theriot’s Player of the Game nod won’t help you sleep much easier.
Jayo525 - June 3, 2008
It pains me even more to say
that Edmonds probably should have won it. I think a little piece of me died writing that…
gary varsho - June 3, 2008
Looking at the box score, I'd say you're right.
He really was the hero on offense.
cwyers - June 3, 2008
He should've scraped his elbow last night.
He’d have been a shoo-in
gary varsho - June 3, 2008
Low blow Gary
Low Blow
Jayo525 - June 3, 2008
I calls like I sees 'em.
Brenly’s gushing over Theriot’s little scrape was just so over the top. It deserves to be ridiculed at every turn.
gary varsho - June 3, 2008
Man
you’ve really been gettin after BB lately…
TheRamZamDLEE - June 3, 2008
If I lost sleep because Dan Plesac was wrong, I'd have died years ago.
cwyers - June 3, 2008
Oh sorry, I was referring to your earlier comments
about Marquis and nightmares
Jayo525 - June 3, 2008
Then Carlos Marmol's shoulder would like to have speaks with Mr. Plesac.
gary varsho - June 3, 2008
I think he'd much rather speak w/ Mr. Piniella
Jayo525 - June 3, 2008
I seriously doubt that Marmol has any complaints about how much he's throwing.
I’m sure he wants to be in the game every day if he could be, and pitch every inning if they’d let him. It’s Lou’s job to be the adult and tell himself no when he has to.
cwyers - June 3, 2008
+1
Blue W - June 3, 2008
Nice win but my god we cannot keep using the bullpen this much
the starters have only been goin about 6 innings tops, they need to step it up right now especially against weak teams such as san diego and los angeles
CubsBall2202 - June 3, 2008
No HowryCow tonight?
TheRamZamDLEE - June 3, 2008
Nah he got the night off
CubsBall2202 - June 3, 2008
hopefully SWL got howry's cow's
john hancock on a Howry Cow! shirt as he was attempting
joeschmitt - June 3, 2008
I can't stay mad at Zambrano.
Blue W - June 3, 2008
At the same time, Lou has been overpitching Z and Dempster.
(And Gallagher is throwing more pitches than I’m really comfortable with at his age.)
He’s a convenient scapegoat, but I’m going to blame Marquis. He’s averaging too few innings per game, especially given what he is.
cwyers - June 3, 2008
We Could Use A Laugher
Something like a 13-6 affair where Marquis’ shortcomings won’t affect the outcome and he can stay out there to eat innings.
CaliCub - June 3, 2008
Sounds like a plan!
gary varsho - June 3, 2008
Here's the deal...
LerxstCub - June 3, 2008
Marshall is on the DL, Hill just got off the DL and isn't ready to pitch more than four innings.
I don’t know who’s next on the depth chart to be honest. Kevin Hart, maybe.
cwyers - June 3, 2008

jbau - June 3, 2008
Good for you!
Blue W - June 3, 2008
haha no!
RightFieldSucks - June 3, 2008
The old Z rears his ugly head.
The one who’d routinely hit the 70-80 pitch mark in the fourth inning. Let’s hope for the ‘08 model next outing.
Also, we should pray that Wood stays healthy because Marmol is great at getting outs 22-24 but seems to have some real trouble nailing down 25-27.
Stop walking guys, Cubs! Get the pitch counts down, go deeper in the game and save the bullpen!
the nth - June 3, 2008
All & all...
These are pretty nice things to complain about, were winning games, & close games at that.
I agree that this was not BIG z’s finest outing, nor was it Marmol’s, but we still found a way to win; that’s a pretty good sign.
Blue W - June 3, 2008
cubs are 13-5 (.722) since signing edmonds
they have gone from 1 GB from the d-bags for best record in NL at 24-16 to 37-21 and the best record in the NL by 3 games over PHI.
during that time, edmonds is hitting 10 for 36 for .303 / .343 / .543 for an OPS of .886, all eerily similar to his .285 / .377 / .526 / .903 career 162-game average
thank you padres. and welcome, jimmy ballgame. can we all get behind this CUB now and let go of the past?
joeschmitt - June 3, 2008
completely agree
louslovechild - June 3, 2008
So you're
attributing the cubs success to singing of Edmonds? How bout giving credit were credit is due. It’s Gerald Perry even “Jimmy Ballgame” acknowledges that.
TheRamZamDLEE - June 3, 2008
he's alittle pitchy
but his solos sounds pretty decent
Chanman25 - June 3, 2008
Randy Jackson agrees
northsider - June 3, 2008
If it was any one's game
I would pick Zambrano; “(8-1) allowed three runs in the first inning before settling down. He legged out three hits to tie his career-high and raise his average to .366. He hit a standup RBI triple that tied the game in the fourth”
espn”s words, not mine.
Blue W - June 3, 2008
just watched it myself, had been waiting 4 the highlights allnight
TheRamZamDLEE - June 3, 2008
I would pick him too
F espn, I wouldn’t care if they said the Earth rotated. They suck, big time…...
crazymountain - June 3, 2008
I know I was asked to stop posting (damn my Sicilian temper!) but I can't
our bullpen is sucking these days…Marmol a 3 run blast? Weurtz walking folks like they are on a leash?
However, I know we are at LEAST 5 – 2 on this road trip….GO CUBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
crazymountain - June 3, 2008
Returning home...
In San Diego..
Games….are…...never….easy…..
Rinse, lather, and repeat.
Thank you, Jim Edmonds. How would anybody have seen this twist coming?
He shuts up the booing Padres fans.
I cannot begin to tell you how sweet that is for me, after all I’ve experienced in SD the past 25 years….
Uh—5 and 2? You are assuming 2 of three in SD? I’m not so sure..
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - June 3, 2008
However, hoping for 7 - 0.............
crazymountain - June 3, 2008
Nope, assuming 5 of the 7 on the trip....
crazymountain - June 3, 2008
Very optimistic
Given that Jason Marquis is starting tomorrow, and Greg Maddux has pitched very well at home. 2 of 3 in SD would be an achievement - I don’t care what the Pads record is.
The best I see for this trip is 4-3. To expect more - really optimstic.
The Dodgers are going to play much better at home than they did at Wrigley.
Let’s not get too far ahead here.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - June 3, 2008
I am VERY optimistic....it is the way I live my life.....
I’m thinking that 5 -2 is pessimistic…....
crazymountain - June 3, 2008
and going 161-1
is a bad season…
Chanman25 - June 3, 2008
And, I have never been SO wrong about a player....
but Mr. Edmonds is being the Edmonds we hated as a CARD…..damn, I hate being wrong….More power to him….I apologize, Mr. Edmonds….I WAS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
crazymountain - June 3, 2008
My beautiful wife is home.....it's her week off....
see y’all on the other side!!!!
crazymountain - June 3, 2008
we have a little breathing room now after Cards loss
We are now 3.5 up on St. Louis, and 7 up on Milwaukee and Houston.
Chanman25 - June 3, 2008
I think it's still a bit early
To say we/you were wrong about Edmonds. He’s strung together a few good games in a row. But one week does not a season make.
Brett Taylor - June 3, 2008
agreed
plus he is in a strict platoon. Hasn’t seen any lefty pitching with us
Chanman25 - June 3, 2008
No, it's not early
We were wrong about Edmonds. Dead solid wrong.
I can’t WAIT until we go to St. Louis again and he shuts those hicks up.
DaBard - June 3, 2008
Hope you don't
have to come back and eat these words.
sue369 - June 3, 2008

Bump Bailey - June 3, 2008
God I can't stand the Brewers blogger
Quote from today’s post:
”
My brother conveyed a story to me about a game earlier in the season…Eric Gagne was entering the game from the bullpen…and fans started booing him before he even threw a pitch! Yes, I know, it is fun to express your emotions…but can we save it for the opposing team?
Let’s not turn into Cubs’ fans, okay”
Almost once a week, he throws a jab at cub’s fans
