but he’s also not built to be a shortstop…..all the guy is doing is playing out of position to help this team in a spot they needed to be filled. not to mention he has been very important to the lineup. if he’s the second basemen for this team people would probably be calling him an all-star
...he was quoting someone else who did an off-the-cuff estimate based on something I wrote a few weeks back. I think 18 runs is a bit high, but he’s on pace for 12-13 runs below the average shortstop on defense. He’s also – on the season so far – a below-average hitter for a shortstop, so long as you insist on using a measure more robust than batting average.
I have my quibbles with some of it, but there are these things called “facts” in there – Theriot’s hitting has declined since April, and his defense has been bad all season.
are W’s and as long as we stay 20 games above .500 w/ Theriot and SS (no matter if the stats say otherwise) I’m fine w/ it. We’re in first place, remember?
like I always Cwyers you’re a man amongst boys w/ your #’s and analysis, but I just am gonna just gonna enjoy the ride (even if mosts of the bumps along the way are SCRAPPY)
...let’s presume that Theriot and Cedeno have hit to their true talent level so far this season, which would make Cedeno (roughly) 11 runs worse than Theriot on offense. [Keep in mind I’m eyeballing this off their Baseball-Reference pages.]
In that event, if Theriot is a 13 run defensive liability, and Cedeno is an average shortstop (and I think that he is), he’s a better shortstop.
If not, the Cubs should do what they did when CF became a hole, and go outside the organization for help. Really, this isn’t rocket science.
his fielding percentage is worse than theriot….are u basing that he’s an average ss because of his range? if range is the key factor in who should play ss freddy bynum probably has good range…he’s available.
I feel like I’m the last one at the bar at 2 am, and the only other person in the room beside the bartender is the crazy townie lady who’s there every night. Time to hit the road.
they’ll have the interviews, and i know they’ll be great… ozzie was on there one time talking to mike north live and just started dropping the f-bomb like it was going out of style… so funny
Howry is little more than a mop up man at this point. Hence why the Cubs have screaming need to add another bullpen arm before the deadline. To go along with the addition of either Rich Harden, AJ Burnett or Derek Lowe.
Although yesterday Rothschild told Piniella “He’s not ready yet” about Marmol and Piniella basically ignored him and walked out to the mound. I’m comfortable w/ our lead though.
World Series celebration ever following the Cubs first championship in however many years, it will only enrich my joy to consider pessimistic anti-fans like you who in your constant state of negativity are incapable of appreciating anything.
they’d have to give up a couple of prospects (Gallardo and LaPorta to start). They are going to have to sign him to a long term deal after giving up those prospects. As a result, They cannot resign Sheets.
I’m really glad I got to share another win with you all though… this is becoming a nice routine for me :-) Everybody have a nice night, and enjoy the off day tomorrow!
“Well, come on, we knew they’re a good home team. I mean, that being said, being good at home is not the beat-all, end-all. Let’s see how they do when our pitchers don’t have to hit. Stupid National League!”
Just watched Ozzie’s postgame comments. He was surprisingly calm and resigned about the game and the series. Not surprisingly, he started off with the usual “A loss is a loss, no matter who you play against.” Yeah, right. I’m sure Kenny Williams concurs.
That aside, he was markedly gracious in defeat. Saying things like, “They played better than we did,” and “They outperformed us.”
When asked about Vazquez’s performance, he said, “[It was] not good. [He was in] trouble from the beginning of the game [and] was off most of the time.” At one point Ozzie apparently joked that, “We might send Vazquez down and bring Louiza (sp?) back.”
About Dempster, he had a variety of compliments, including “He threw the big pitch when he had to,” and “He threw the ball unbelievable good.”
When asked whether he was going to change anything when the Cubs visit the Cell next weekend, Ozzie said simply, “No, we just have to play better, pitch better.”
Finally, several times during the interview he said about the Cubs, “That’s why they’re in first place.”
...holding in his rage for use against Kenny Williams. His GM’s idiotic comments may well have lit a fire under this Cubs team ass. Then again, Ozzie wasn’t exactly at the top of his game during the series either.
Comments from Sox Fans (stolen from fellow Cubs fan Facebook page)
“um the cubs didn’t get the 10th in a row, and the sox came back with 7 the next week. why don’t ya don’t ya go jerk soriano off…i think he could use a n extra hand. HA!”
“Never said the cubs weren’t the best team in baseball. As of right now ya gotta say that. But the sox ARE in a better spot. And like I said the cubs are SUPPOSED 2 be where they’re at. I’m not sayin anymore till the series”
“I know you like wrapping your mouth around Mariotti’s balls all the time, but his article today was undeniably trash. Even for someone who likes his work such as yourself, I thought you would still know better…
P.S. – Ozzie blew it today by going to Dotel in the 7th. Danks was pitching fantastic.”
“I probably would have made that bet seeing as how I’m so used to takin ur money, however I’m reading your post after the sox handed you guys a win. Ozzie got out-managed once again. But bottom line..anytime you get lead-hits in three innings (two of them doubles) ya simply don’t deserve to win the ballgame. Danks should have never been taken out with uribe pinch hitting. Fuckin 1 earned run, 5 scattered hits, and 3 clutch double play ground balls…he was fuckin rollin but the cubs one fair n square. what can I say?”
Lone Cubs Fan post: “I love how all these sox fans hate on the cubs so much that they actually get mad over it!! all i can say is lets go white sox all the way to the seris and we’ll see ya there!!!”
Go Cubs GO

is there anything better

Bet we don’t see their white trash toothless fans wearing the colors this week!

Ok that was cold...
Most White Sox fans have at least 1 tooth.
daeviant - June 22, 2008
ok....I have

funny
how they disappear when things go badly yet we still wear our cubbie blue stuff isn’t it?

The teeth or the fans?

the guy isnt a good defensive shortstop
but he’s also not built to be a shortstop…..all the guy is doing is playing out of position to help this team in a spot they needed to be filled. not to mention he has been very important to the lineup. if he’s the second basemen for this team people would probably be calling him an all-star

He's about the third or fourth best second baseman on this team.
cwyers - June 22, 2008
Those numbers are a bit off...
...he was quoting someone else who did an off-the-cuff estimate based on something I wrote a few weeks back. Did you even bother reading it?
I have my quibbles with some of it, but there are these things called “facts” in there – Theriot’s hitting has declined since April, and his defense has been bad all season.
Ryan Theriot so far in June: .286/.333/.314
True story!
cwyers - June 22, 2008
but
if you think onedec’s a better player
WRONG
plenz - June 22, 2008
exactly
what are onedec’s numbers in june?
cubsmania - June 22, 2008
That was eloquent and persuasive...
...and I find myself utterly convinced of your point of view. In fact, I would like to hear more, and would love to subscribe to your newsletter.
cwyers - June 22, 2008
while theriots numbers in june arent what he was doing in april and may
they still arent terrible….not like he has fallen off the table…and at the same time cedeno has started to fall off the table with his hitting.
cubsmania - June 22, 2008
cwyers
no fun arguing during a great sweep of the white trash but who on the roster is going to do better at ss for us?
I know the riot’s not an all star ss but he has been an integral part of this team….....graphs and range factors aside
plenz - June 22, 2008
so
demonstrable facts aside, he’s great? Pfft.
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 22, 2008
still waiting

Off the cuff...

cubsmania - June 22, 2008
range and arm strength
californiachicagoan - June 22, 2008
His CS has probably cost a few runs too...
I’m not sure how to quantify that..
Bump Bailey - June 22, 2008
yeah he's run us out of innings
getting picked off first by a righty is unforgivable, but somehow he gets a pass because he’s scrappy
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 22, 2008
If a .647 OPS for a guy who isn't a Padre isn't terrible...
...then it is impossible to be terrible at baseball.

Why is that ironic?
Bump Bailey - June 22, 2008
Answer: It's not.
daver - June 22, 2008
I’ll type this slowly so maybe you’ll understand
The irony is he’s a diehard Sox fan and his brother is the lead sports guy on the Cubs radio station.
puckishcubsfan - June 22, 2008
Amazing.
Even when you type slowly, you can’t seem to get the hang of simple punctuation…or subject lines. Thanks for sharing!
daver - June 22, 2008
Subject lines
I make a subject line and you whine and post 300 posts bashing me for repeating the subject line in the post.
And again I didn’t realize this was English 101.
puckishcubsfan - June 22, 2008
And there’s nothing wrong with the punctuation in that sentence.
But you’re the punctuation police.

carmen_fanzone - June 22, 2008
Holy Hell
I usually don’t like a fat joke, but Jenks looks like a pitching blimp. Srsly
Reddevil - June 22, 2008
I think he calls hitters and threatens to eat them before the game so they’re scared so they make outs.
puckishcubsfan - June 22, 2008
Dampster got a
standing ‘O” whe he got up to bat. Good for him.
sue369 - June 22, 2008
Definitely deserved.

Howry warming up.
Like lighter fluid on a campfire.
Cubfansince1957 - June 22, 2008
Yep
Howry is little more than a mop up man at this point. Hence why the Cubs have screaming need to add another bullpen arm before the deadline. To go along with the addition of either Rich Harden, AJ Burnett or Derek Lowe.
MDBNIU - June 22, 2008
dude go away
the CUBS are winning
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 22, 2008

The Dodgers are still in the race.

and anyone who brings a sign to a sporting event that says that should be immediately ejected, beat, and never allowed near a tv camera again… ever
lswaidz - June 22, 2008
Word. That's ridiculous.
Sweet! I’m at a sporting event, I totally want to cheer for….the non-affiliated network?
slcathena - June 22, 2008
Next time ESPN comes to Wrigley I’m making a sign that says “JOE THE BASKET WAS BUILT IN 1970 AFTER WHICH ERNIE BANKS HIT 14 HOMERUNS OF 512!”

halfblindcubbiegirl - June 22, 2008

West Coast Diehard - June 22, 2008

They do get warm up pitches, mind you
Although yesterday Rothschild told Piniella “He’s not ready yet” about Marmol and Piniella basically ignored him and walked out to the mound. I’m comfortable w/ our lead though.

cocknfire - June 22, 2008

halfblindcubbiegirl - June 22, 2008
20 games above .500
4.5 over the Cardinals
and a three-game sweep of the most trash-talking GM and Manager in the major leagues.
Think we smell like urine, do ya? Well, you smell - and look - like sh!t.
drewishdrewid - June 22, 2008
LSA!!!!
daver - June 22, 2008

Jayo525 - June 22, 2008
Well, the two words do rhyme...
daver - June 22, 2008
NL Central
Cubs—
Cards -4.5
Brewers -6.5
All else double digits out
cocknfire - June 22, 2008
Buster Olney
thinks the Brewers are going to make a play for Sabathia.
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 22, 2008
go ahead
and they lose Sheets to FA and at least LaPorta and Braun
Chanman25 - June 22, 2008
Let's hope C.C. is smarter than that.
daver - June 22, 2008
Yeah, saw that
They do need pitching, but I don’t know…
cocknfire - June 22, 2008
with what?
drewishdrewid - June 22, 2008
I dunno
I just thought it was interesting.
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 22, 2008
He didn't really say...
Just said, without explaining, that the Brewers have the prospex the Indians need
cocknfire - June 22, 2008
and that they're going into
win NOW mode.
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 22, 2008
Haha, they are going to need alot more than CC
Their bullpen is a major problem for the Brew Crew.
Geo4MVP - June 22, 2008
again, I ask...
with what?
drewishdrewid - June 22, 2008
I would think it would have
to be Weeks, a pitching prospect and a blue chipper.
Unique - June 22, 2008
They would have to give up LaPorta
He is their up and coming prospect. They need him alot more than a 3 month rental of Sabathia.
Geo4MVP - June 22, 2008
its a bad situation for them
they’d have to give up a couple of prospects (Gallardo and LaPorta to start). They are going to have to sign him to a long term deal after giving up those prospects. As a result, They cannot resign Sheets.
Chanman25 - June 22, 2008
Well time to take off...
I’m really glad I got to share another win with you all though… this is becoming a nice routine for me :-) Everybody have a nice night, and enjoy the off day tomorrow!
lswaidz - June 22, 2008
Night!
See you Tuesday! :D
slcathena - June 22, 2008

LT - June 22, 2008
Yesterday someone posted this..
Sox = Cubs little bitches
Bump Bailey - June 22, 2008
I can almost hear Mike North's CYA already...
“Well, come on, we knew they’re a good home team. I mean, that being said, being good at home is not the beat-all, end-all. Let’s see how they do when our pitchers don’t have to hit. Stupid National League!”
Goodie1969 - June 22, 2008
but
their pitchers didn’t hit today, either.
drewishdrewid - June 22, 2008
Touche'
Goodie1969 - June 22, 2008

halfblindcubbiegirl - June 22, 2008

halfblindcubbiegirl - June 22, 2008
i look forward to using that bill muray picture next weekend
Chanman25 - June 22, 2008
Nice Cubs win. Nice Cubs sweep.
Sorry the grounds crew will have to scrape pieces of Ozzie’s head off the ceiling after it explodes.
Good night all.
cocknfire - June 22, 2008
night!
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 22, 2008
Good night all. Hope I get to see some Cubs on WGN out here in Denver this week.
Cubfansince1957 - June 22, 2008
With Ward and Marshall coming back up
who should be sent down. We have a dilemma folks.
Murton & who? Hoffpauir? Patterson? I hope not the latter.
Unique - June 22, 2008
I heard somewhere RJ DL
but I dunno about the other, I guess Hoff
Chanman25 - June 22, 2008
Probably Hoffpauir after tonight.
daver - June 22, 2008
hoffpauir
He hasn’t impressed me yet and Murton is not the player that Lou wants.
Geo4MVP - June 22, 2008
Yeah
I guess Ward makes Hoffpauir not a need.
Unique - June 22, 2008
Agreed...
And Hoff is mainly a first baseman, so I expect he goes down.
Bump Bailey - June 22, 2008
Fontenot
if i have a vote. or Hoff.
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 22, 2008
I wouldn't mind seeing Fonty go down.
and Hoff, obviously. But it might also be Murton.
drewishdrewid - June 22, 2008
Fonty's on Lou's good side. Murton is not.
I’ll be shocked if Little Lord Fonty-roy goes down.
daver - June 22, 2008
Murton and Fontenot
carmen_fanzone - June 22, 2008
I'm off too
Night everyone!
halfblindcubbiegirl - June 22, 2008

Unique - June 22, 2008
Will do. I'll try to scribble down the highlights here.
daver - June 22, 2008
thanks, bud!
Unique - June 22, 2008
Anything...
from the Mouth of the South? I want to know how he describes this performance.
ESPN is getting ready to rerun the Lou/Ozzie spot.
FSArkCubsFan - June 22, 2008
Lou/Ozzie
I kind of thought the one where they jumped on a trampoline, rode a bike for 2 etc was kind of funny.
puckishcubsfan - June 22, 2008
Ozzie's Press Conference Highlights
Indeed, Ozzie. Indeed.
daver - June 22, 2008
Wow...
that coming from Ozzie is a shock.
FSArkCubsFan - June 22, 2008
Drugged
Maybe someone drugged him.
The weird thing is Ozzie was my favorite player on the Sox for a long time.
puckishcubsfan - June 22, 2008
Wow.
That’s suprising. Thanks!
Unique - June 22, 2008
Yeah, I'm guessing he was...
...holding in his rage for use against Kenny Williams. His GM’s idiotic comments may well have lit a fire under this Cubs team ass. Then again, Ozzie wasn’t exactly at the top of his game during the series either.
daver - June 22, 2008
The Sox shouting their mouths and the Cubs sweep
My Mom has a saying “There’s well said and there’s well done”
Meaning you can talk a great game but the only thing that counts is if you produce or play a great game.
puckishcubsfan - June 22, 2008
I like that saying
Sounds like something my grandma would come up with.
BlueDWarrior - June 22, 2008
