HIts are largely a function of the team’s defense, not the pitcher. Pitchers should be mainly judged upon their Three True Outcomes; walks, strikes, home runs. Everything else is mainly the responsiblity of the other eight guys on the field. (GB/FB rate and IFFB% are also noteworthy.)
You can control whether it's a fly ball or a ground ball.
One isn’t necessarily better than the other – fly balls are more easily turned into outs, but you allow more extra base hits. It’s a subtle effect.
What you can’t do is control whether or not those balls are fielded for outs, at least not that much. And the line drive rate doesn’t seem to be within a pitcher’s control.
Over a pitcher's career, his Batting Average on Balls in Play...
...(essentially, hits allowed when he doesn’t get a True Outcome) will stabilize between .280 and .300. That’s true for almost everyone; some guys like Tim Wakefield are an exception, but Wakefield has a knuckler.
...I heard on the KC radio – a Baltimore pitcher balked tonight when he was on the rubber, and the ball slipped outta his glove. I haven’t heard of that for a long time!

I’m a huge Raiders and A’s fan but I was born in Berwyn, IL, and one of my first memories was watching a game at Wrigley. The cubs are the only IL team I still cheer for as I was raised in the East Bay.
Every year, I don cubbie blue to AT&T. I absolutely hate the Giants, so the combo of tonight’s Cubs win, Giants loss, A’s win and Angels loss feels incredible tonight.
I’ve also been a long time lurker of this blog and decided to chime in tonight.
I just got home from AT&T/SBC/PacBell Park and was ready to get it on (TWSS..I know). Great win for the Cubbies! All I heard on the radio today was that this was the right time to catch the Cubs….how about the right group of AAA players for the Cubs to play! Here’s to beating up on Fresno for a few more days and gettin’ healthy in St. Louie. W.
Because a lot of it is total shit. As an A’s/Cubs fan from the bay area, I’m astounded by the level of homerism on that station when it comes to the Giants/Niners.
KNBR works well for me because the Giants and 49ers are terrible and have been for a few years. It’s too bad the A’s don’t get their fair share. I went two Sundays ago vs. Fla. They are a fun group to watch.
and they do little to call out the management of the Giants and Niners. It is always free season on the Raiders and little is said about the A’s.
I heard what you heard on the radio and was taken aback by the cavalier attitude the radio personalities had toward the cubs. Sure it was tough for the cubs to get swept, and sure the Giants did get momentum beating my A’s, but honestly—you’d think they assumed the cubs suddenly ran out of heavy lumber and quality pitching.
BTW Hagen, where do you hail from? Are you a visitor or a Bay Area resident?
Napa's home. Wine's pretty good up here but give me an Old Style or a Bud Light anytime.
IMO, all things comsidered, a limping Cub team still trumps what the Giants have to offer. I am damn glad interleague is over. AT&T was like Wrigley West tonight, especially after the emergency exit following DeRo’s granny. Awesome!

Walks are fundamental, hits are not.
HIts are largely a function of the team’s defense, not the pitcher. Pitchers should be mainly judged upon their Three True Outcomes; walks, strikes, home runs. Everything else is mainly the responsiblity of the other eight guys on the field. (GB/FB rate and IFFB% are also noteworthy.)

You can control whether it's a fly ball or a ground ball.
One isn’t necessarily better than the other – fly balls are more easily turned into outs, but you allow more extra base hits. It’s a subtle effect.
What you can’t do is control whether or not those balls are fielded for outs, at least not that much. And the line drive rate doesn’t seem to be within a pitcher’s control.

I’m a huge Raiders and A’s fan but I was born in Berwyn, IL, and one of my first memories was watching a game at Wrigley. The cubs are the only IL team I still cheer for as I was raised in the East Bay.
Every year, I don cubbie blue to AT&T. I absolutely hate the Giants, so the combo of tonight’s Cubs win, Giants loss, A’s win and Angels loss feels incredible tonight.
I’ve also been a long time lurker of this blog and decided to chime in tonight.

I just got home from AT&T/SBC/PacBell Park and was ready to get it on (TWSS..I know). Great win for the Cubbies! All I heard on the radio today was that this was the right time to catch the Cubs….how about the right group of AAA players for the Cubs to play! Here’s to beating up on Fresno for a few more days and gettin’ healthy in St. Louie. W.

KNBR works well for me because the Giants and 49ers are terrible and have been for a few years. It’s too bad the A’s don’t get their fair share. I went two Sundays ago vs. Fla. They are a fun group to watch.

It is far from impartial reporting
and they do little to call out the management of the Giants and Niners. It is always free season on the Raiders and little is said about the A’s.
I heard what you heard on the radio and was taken aback by the cavalier attitude the radio personalities had toward the cubs. Sure it was tough for the cubs to get swept, and sure the Giants did get momentum beating my A’s, but honestly—you’d think they assumed the cubs suddenly ran out of heavy lumber and quality pitching.
BTW Hagen, where do you hail from? Are you a visitor or a Bay Area resident?

IMO, all things comsidered, a limping Cub team still trumps what the Giants have to offer. I am damn glad interleague is over. AT&T was like Wrigley West tonight, especially after the emergency exit following DeRo’s granny. Awesome!
