he is awful… he should not be an allstar.. now that teams have a scouting report… just throw it in the dirt outside and he will strike out…. someone needs to translate to him that he sucks
he hasn’t been that horrible this year.. Pitchers have adjusted to what he does, he just has to make the same adjustment. DLee has snapped out of his 0fer, so has rammy.. He’ll be fine.
to any team that cannot keep the ball down to major league hitters. The Cub pitchers have gotten hurt by throwing up in the zone. If they were able to keep the ball down, this would be 7-3 Cubs by now. It happens.
we are going to scratch/claw back, you’ll see. went the the red sox game a couple days ago they were down the entire game and then BAM manny tied it w/a HR over the monster in the 8th, they scored one more, and pap shut the door.
its NEVER over, especially at wrigley with this kinda wind – go cubs!
don’t forget we scored at least 7 runs today. most days, that’ll win it for us. pitching was poor today, but just 11 losses at home. i’ll take a bad outing every once in a while.
...Lou described the Cubs as a “pitching-oriented” team. Well, when the pitching fails to the degree it did today, a win is unlikely. (Not that I’m, ahem, giving up or anything.)
Actually, Jason has pitched some of his best games
when the Cubs needed him the most?
Remember the 2-hitter against Pittsburgh when the bullpen had been taxed? And the Giants game in SF that he lost 2-1? And the Giants don’t exactly have the scariest lineup in the world.
Of course, those other starts were on regular rest…
This kind of game happens. Yes, even when we’re at home. We won the series. We’ll get the Giants tomorrow. No need to start attacking any specific players or their worth to the team. Anyone ready to jump off a cliff, open up a fanpost, I’m sure you’ll have some company. We’ll stay out and look forward to tomorrow.
It’s just something about the way these two teams match up. If the Cubs pitching isn’t on, the Reds deposit baseballs into the bleachers like pigeons crapping on a parked car. Gotta let it go.
I really thought they could pull it out. I think that long fly out by ED was a HR in my dream. Every dog, (Cincinnati), has their day… They’ll win tomorrow and Saturday in Harden’s debut. Can’t wait to see it in person.
Got a TV here, the radio, internet. All by myself. Got to massage a couple of clients egos via e-mail & make a call to do the same. Piece of cake. I actually enjoy it.
down the left field line on Sat. We’ll be the ones with MDBNIU was right sign. (just kidding!). It’ll be a blast to see Goodie again though & see Harden’s debut.
J/K. We will be taking pics and doing a fan post. Goodie’s my friend of 20 yrs. and roomie for 8 yrs. until he got married. It’ll be great to see him. He’s originally from IA too.
can you parse this out for me? How do scout teams work in relation to minor leagues? This sounds pre-minor, obviously. So you get signed to a scout team in hopes of making it the minors? Forgive my ignorance…
Scout teams are essentially high school all-star teams. The Wahoos are made up of high schoolers from Santa Barbara up to Paso Robles, ranging from the class of ‘11 up to ‘08. The Indians scout who runs the team is following these kids and they get to play for the Wahoos so both sides win: The kids get to play more baseball against some good competition (the Foresters are a semi-pro team with collegiate players), and the scouts get to see them up close in game action and coach them. You can imagine why both sides find this arrangement beneficial. The starting pitcher today was a 5’9 lefty whose fastball looked like changeups compared to the rest of the league. He didn’t last long.
In short, scout teams are made up of either high school players or just-graduated players. There is no tryout, the players are selected by the scouts. And they play exhibition teams over the summer so the kids get more experience and the scouts can assess their skills and talents.
Not sure what "a little bit of knowledge" is supposed to mean there,
but that’s bringing up a different issue tangent to this. The scout team exists for scouts to evaluate; whether or not drafting high school players is “bad” is a totally different discussion unrelated to an explanation of what scout teams are. Approach varies by organization. Obviously, the Cleveland Indians do not share an anti-HS philosophy. The Cubs took Josh Vitters out of HS, btw, just to name one.
the only article about the team I could find. Vince Sagisi, the scout mentioned in the article, is the one I talked to before the game. (He was also tossed for arguing balls and strikes.)
And for anyone unfamiliar, Lompoc is pronounced “LOM-poke”, the lom rhymes with mom.
First?

Cubs will win this game.
Jimmyeatworld - July 10, 2008
love the optimism
enough with the predictions. Unless you want to take the blame for the loss. I kid.
tony412 - July 10, 2008
ok so time to shut them down
we are going to scratch/claw back, you’ll see. went the the red sox game a couple days ago they were down the entire game and then BAM manny tied it w/a HR over the monster in the 8th, they scored one more, and pap shut the door.
its NEVER over, especially at wrigley with this kinda wind – go cubs!
CubbyBlues - July 10, 2008
Phillips

drewishdrewid - July 10, 2008

It's gonna be up to Lee, Ramirez, Soto, Edmons, DeRosa and Fontenot...

pedro_from_portugal - July 10, 2008
I agree.
How about this until Sori returns:
Riot
DeRo
DLee
Ramy
Edmonds
Soto
Dome
Fonty/RJ

That would take some of the pressure off of him for a while.
DeRoMyHero - July 10, 2008

drewishdrewid - July 10, 2008

santoswoodenlegs - July 10, 2008
These Reds HRs are just plain boring
Emelie - July 10, 2008
Let Paul BAKO bat
parrotinct - July 10, 2008

Why is our only LHP pitching in a mop-up situation??????
DeRoMyHero - July 10, 2008
at some point

drewishdrewid - July 10, 2008
7 HR's in 7 different innings, 6 different hitters. ENOUGH ENOUGH ENOUGH
MinnesotaFan - July 10, 2008
at least they didn't spread them out over the series
LAcarl519 - July 10, 2008
No BP for the Reds on get away day today
They should never take BP if they hit like this
parrotinct - July 10, 2008
Clearly someone on the Reds...
...is stealing signs. What baffles me is why they weren’t doing it during the previous two games.
daver - July 10, 2008
no one

drewishdrewid - July 10, 2008

drewishdrewid - July 10, 2008
Thanks.
Hope Dome’s foot is okay…
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008
even though we're getting beat,
don’t forget we scored at least 7 runs today. most days, that’ll win it for us. pitching was poor today, but just 11 losses at home. i’ll take a bad outing every once in a while.
fajita - July 10, 2008
today the reds would win any game.. no matter how bad u'r pitching, the hr's were insane
pedro_from_portugal - July 10, 2008
Yeah, during the pregame...
...Lou described the Cubs as a “pitching-oriented” team. Well, when the pitching fails to the degree it did today, a win is unlikely. (Not that I’m, ahem, giving up or anything.)
daver - July 10, 2008
Hairston
flies out to Fonty. 2 outs.
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2008
Who's pitching tomorrow?
pedro_from_portugal - July 10, 2008
everyone's favorite
Marquis
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2008
Actually, Jason has pitched some of his best games
when the Cubs needed him the most?
Remember the 2-hitter against Pittsburgh when the bullpen had been taxed? And the Giants game in SF that he lost 2-1? And the Giants don’t exactly have the scariest lineup in the world.
Of course, those other starts were on regular rest…

Jason "my sinker sinks like a submarine" marquis
cubs - July 10, 2008
To be fair...
it’s hard to stay sharp and keep consistent when you only get to pitch every 5 days…isn’t that Wuertz excuse?
santoswoodenlegs - July 10, 2008
His sinker floats like a balloon. That's the problem.
daver - July 10, 2008
Am I the only person who doesn't think marquis
is that awful?
he’s not great or anything, but for a #5 starter you could do way worse.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008
my issue
is that with Marshal, we could do better.
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2008
i love sean marshall
he’s a gamer.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008
He did

santoswoodenlegs - July 10, 2008

Emelie - July 10, 2008
Yeah, it's always a sad feeling when they're losing.
daver - July 10, 2008
Rami
K’s 2 outs
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2008
Ok, I think most of us are in agreement here
This kind of game happens. Yes, even when we’re at home. We won the series. We’ll get the Giants tomorrow. No need to start attacking any specific players or their worth to the team. Anyone ready to jump off a cliff, open up a fanpost, I’m sure you’ll have some company. We’ll stay out and look forward to tomorrow.
tony412 - July 10, 2008
agree
pedro_from_portugal - July 10, 2008
Agreed.
40 wins/40 losses, you fight over the other 80, right?
Let’s hope Cincy takes these bats to Milwaukee tomorrow.
LAcarl519 - July 10, 2008
indeed.
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2008
Yeah, I'm cool.
It’s just something about the way these two teams match up. If the Cubs pitching isn’t on, the Reds deposit baseballs into the bleachers like pigeons crapping on a parked car. Gotta let it go.
daver - July 10, 2008
Don't know why but I get frustrated with this same thing.
This and the other Reds game has me very peeved.
Fishbone2 - July 10, 2008
Yeah, it's freakish.
Fortunately, it only seems to happen once a series.
daver - July 10, 2008
Plus, we aren't used to that "losing" feeling this year.
Doesn’t happen much, so, when it does it sucks!
Fishbone2 - July 10, 2008
Well said
sue369 - July 10, 2008
5 runs with 2 outs?
thoughts?
santoswoodenlegs - July 10, 2008

of course.. why not
pedro_from_portugal - July 10, 2008
pedro
are you in Portugal now?
Emelie - July 10, 2008
it's been known to happen
Emelie - July 10, 2008

Blue W - July 10, 2008
Great. Well, at least the Cubs have seen him recently.
daver - July 10, 2008
didn't we hit some balls hard against him?
but they just didn’t go anywhere b/c of the park?
or am i remembering a differnt game?
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008
Ummm...I can't quite remember either.
I think we did get a few decent knocks in, though, yeah.
daver - July 10, 2008
Cain pretty much Shut them down.
Fishbone2 - July 10, 2008
8 innings 2 hits no runs.
Fishbone2 - July 10, 2008
But...but...those two hits were REALLY hard.
daver - July 10, 2008
They swung really hard at the 12K's he had too.
Fishbone2 - July 10, 2008
gah.
that is even uglier than i remembered.
:-(
:NERVOUS!:
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008
But...That's why they play the games.
It will be better this time around!
Fishbone2 - July 10, 2008
true.
just… yeah. i’ll feel better about tomorrows game after this one fades a little.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008
I hear you...
Fishbone2 - July 10, 2008
the end result wasn't pretty
but hopefully wrigley will regain its magic for us.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008
I think it will :)
Fishbone2 - July 10, 2008
Dodgers lit him up last time
Hopefully he doesn’t have his Cy Young stuff like he did about 10 days ago.
wnielsen - July 10, 2008
Not soon enough.
daver - July 10, 2008
Oh well.
I really thought they could pull it out. I think that long fly out by ED was a HR in my dream. Every dog, (Cincinnati), has their day… They’ll win tomorrow and Saturday in Harden’s debut. Can’t wait to see it in person.
Jimmyeatworld - July 10, 2008
Well, that was kind of a spanking wasn't it?
And we all know what comes after a good spanking.

santoswoodenlegs - July 10, 2008
someone saying twss?
LT - July 10, 2008
resurrection?
Emelie - July 10, 2008

drewishdrewid - July 10, 2008
Heh...
“Come back, you yellow BASTARDS!”
Shawon O Meter - July 10, 2008
Is that Glenn Close?
daver - July 10, 2008

NAUGHTY ZOOT!
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2008
evil naughty Zoot...
There is only one punishment for lighting the Grail-Shaped Beacon.
santoswoodenlegs - July 10, 2008
Right.
I’m out. We’ll get ‘em tomorrow, Cubs fans!
drewishdrewid - July 10, 2008
Later drew!
Jimmyeatworld - July 10, 2008
Peace.
daver - July 10, 2008
bye, buddy!
:-)
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008
Had to leave before
it was over and got back just in time for the loss. We’ll get em tomorrow but Marquis scares the hell out of me.
Lou just saying they can’t stay with 13 pitchers. He wants to give his outfield a break. After the break they will make changes.
sue369 - July 10, 2008
I still think Marquis is getting traded. Just a hunch.
He could be odd man out of the rotation and he made it clear to Lou in spring training that he doesn’t like the idea of being a bullpen guy.
LAcarl519 - July 10, 2008
to make a trade you need a partner
who you thinks taking him?
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008
we will clearly pick up some (half?)
of his contract, but something will happen, especially if a team in the race gets an injury in the next 3 weeks. Who needs a starting arm?
LAcarl519 - July 10, 2008
the biggest problem is one of his biggest pluses is
his hitting/base running and you lose that if he goes to the AL.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008
Welll, I'm sure there are plenty of Independent League teams willing to talk.
santoswoodenlegs - July 10, 2008
Yeah, it's gonna be a tall order getting another team to pick up his contract.
I honestly don’t know what’s going to become of Marquis.
daver - July 10, 2008
Probably the same thing that happened last year.
Plays until he is left off the playoff roster.
Fishbone2 - July 10, 2008
Yeah, that does seem like the most likely outcome.
daver - July 10, 2008
Hate to say it but there's not a lot of options...
Fishbone2 - July 10, 2008
Who all pitched today?
Lieber, Wuertz, Cotts, Godain, Lilly (sort of)....
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008
final all star spots in
Evan Longoria & Corey Hart win the fan vote
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008
Hmpf.
Well, I voted for Longoria in the AL. Can’t remember who I voted for in the NL – Burrell, I think.
daver - July 10, 2008
i dind't vote.
It lead off sportscenter so I figured i’d pass it along
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008
Interesting
a guy named after a Desperate Housewife, and Waldo the Dog Faced Boy.
CaliCub - July 10, 2008
rofl!!
Emelie - July 10, 2008
On the bright side:
our pitching staff only gave up 3 walks. Throwing strikes is a good thing.
‘course…thats about all i’ve got.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008
Am I the only one left here?
Jimmyeatworld - July 10, 2008

Just trying to wrap things up here at work, and I haven’t left this screen.
daver - July 10, 2008

halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008

Jimmyeatworld - July 10, 2008

halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008
It's alright.
Got a TV here, the radio, internet. All by myself. Got to massage a couple of clients egos via e-mail & make a call to do the same. Piece of cake. I actually enjoy it.
Jimmyeatworld - July 10, 2008

halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008

daver - July 10, 2008
oooh!
you’ll have to take pictures and tell us what he looks like in person (on the mound, i’m not really interested in him that way). :-)
have a great time.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 10, 2008
C'mom you love Rich Harden!
J/K. We will be taking pics and doing a fan post. Goodie’s my friend of 20 yrs. and roomie for 8 yrs. until he got married. It’ll be great to see him. He’s originally from IA too.

northsider - July 10, 2008
we missed you today northsider
could’ve used more levity. Hope we’ll see you tomorrow or Sat.
Emelie - July 10, 2008
Glad to know I'm the voice of levity. haha
The Foresters blasted the California Wahoos (Cleveland Indians scout team) today, 19-1.
northsider - July 10, 2008
Wow they had
the bats going today then? Who would name their team Wahoos? lol
sue369 - July 10, 2008
Chief Wahoo, of course!
northsider - July 10, 2008
This is so degrading to all those casino owners.
santoswoodenlegs - July 10, 2008
Ah, that makes sense.
sue369 - July 10, 2008
wahoo? yahoo!
Emelie - July 10, 2008
Actually...
can you parse this out for me? How do scout teams work in relation to minor leagues? This sounds pre-minor, obviously. So you get signed to a scout team in hopes of making it the minors? Forgive my ignorance…
Emelie - July 10, 2008
Nope, when scouts sign you, you're a pro.
And they play exhibition teams over the summer so the kids get more experience and the scouts can assess their skills and talents.
northsider - July 10, 2008
Great....
but isn’t high school scouting a no no? Again, this is from a newbie perspective reading Money Ball…
Emelie - July 10, 2008
Why would high school scouting be a no-no?
Since A-Rod, our own Kerry Wood, and so many others were drafted out of high school, what do you mean?
northsider - July 10, 2008
a little bit of knowledge
is a dangerous thing … the H.S. no-no came from reading Moneyball.
Emelie - July 11, 2008
Not sure what "a little bit of knowledge" is supposed to mean there,
but that’s bringing up a different issue tangent to this. The scout team exists for scouts to evaluate; whether or not drafting high school players is “bad” is a totally different discussion unrelated to an explanation of what scout teams are. Approach varies by organization. Obviously, the Cleveland Indians do not share an anti-HS philosophy. The Cubs took Josh Vitters out of HS, btw, just to name one.
northsider - July 12, 2008
Here's
the only article about the team I could find. Vince Sagisi, the scout mentioned in the article, is the one I talked to before the game. (He was also tossed for arguing balls and strikes.)
And for anyone unfamiliar, Lompoc is pronounced “LOM-poke”, the lom rhymes with mom.
