I’m not getting ahead of myself, just curious how this works:
Say Harden goes on to pitch spectacularly for the rest of the season, is he eligible for the Cy Young? Just curious if that’s possible for any pitcher changing leagues.
...such as if the tickets turn out to be bogus or something. StubHub offers guarantees. And I think if the game is canceled (rained out, whatever), on StubHub you get a full refund, not just a refund of the face value.
I paid via Paypal on my credit card, so if I’m defrauded, I can get the money back. If the game’s rained out, I’ll get replacement tix. I don’t think the face value of these tickets are that low, $65 each is a pretty good price.
But there’s a lot of baseball left. It will be interesting to see if that keeps up. However, given that Up 4 doesn’t lose stat…and the Cubs offense, this could be ridiculous.
Hendry would really go after C.C. this winter before the Harden trade, but now if Harden remains healthy I think they pick up his option and I’m not sure they need to spend more on C.C. but then again we could let Demp walk for draft picks.
I think we’d have too many SP, signed for much, much less than what CC is going to sign for. Save that money and go out and get a Center fielder. Or, perhaps, sign CC and trade for a CF?
think we should give Pie another chance before spending too much on a CF. Pie was starting to hit before he was sent down if he could cut down his strikeouts then he would be a great everyday option.
else agree we should let Howry walk this year for draft picks. We definitely need more youth in the minors if we want to catch up with other teams systems let alone keep up.
hitting over .300 over the last couple of weeks he was up here when he was sent down he was hitting well in the majors it’s just that every time he doesn’t get a hit he strikes out and Lou wants him to at least put the ball into play.
Don't get me wrong, I like Pie and want him to get a chance.
He won’t get a chance to prove it this year with Johnson and Edmonds. And I just don’t see Hendry going into next year with Pie as the expected starting CF. Its not every year you get a chance to pick up Edmonds and Johnson type players a month into the season. We were very lucky to get those guys.
I’m just saying multiple times the bullpen has given up huge leads and it has required Wood and yes that’s what a closer is for but I would like to give his arm a little rest sometimes…you know to avoid the DL
b) failure to take advantage of multiple inning middle relievers. There is no reason that Gaudin couldn’t have pitched another there. And I’m exhausted, so it’s escaping me, but there was a similary example in the past week.
I happen to be at work listening to the game so not all of us can chime in when we want.
As a guy who listens to the cubs when they play the giants (because I live on the west coast) and watches all the games on ESPN when they are on, all I see from Marmol is a Meltdown waitng to happen.
But he’s struggled in this situation the last few times he’s been in it. It’ll be the last for a while. Hendry pulled the trigger on Wuertz; don’t be surprised if he does the same for Marmol
he’s been awful? He doesn’t need booing to tell him that. If he could turn a switch on and fix it he would. None of us know what it’s like to be in that situation.
by basically exploiting him. Doesn’t help anyone else’s psyche in the bullpen either when they don’t get a chance in a crucial situation. That is if you think there’s a mental part to this game….
Stop. People are allowed to vent frustration. Yes, good teams have good games, good player make dumb plays, but that doesn’t mean we have to enjoy. Nobody is crying the sky is falling here. Being pissed about this game doesn’t translate to wanting the Cubs to lose. It’s called being frustrated with a poor performance.
If this goes extras, are Woody and Lieber really the only two pitchers left in the pen? I guess some of the starters due to throw Mon / Tues / Weds could throw, with the break, right?
This is getting beyond ridiculous. Calling Lou a crappy manager because he managed a bad game saying the team is not a winning team for playing a bad game.
And Theriot (of course I remember how the homerun lovers don’t value OBP) of course is the worst player in the history of the game.
but he SERIOUSLY needs to rethink his bullpen use. using 5 different relievers a game is recipe for landing 1 that is having an off day and messing it up. let gaudin pitch 2 innings or hell….EVEN THREE!!
But one of the reasons I’m so mad about using today as a Marmol head day (and I’ve advocated those in the past frequently) is that I feel like it’s really disrespectful to the awesome outing you just got from your new guy.
is this is the kind of game that can start a slide. Lou needs to look at the way he uses his bullpen. It’s just not smart the way he uses guys for .2 innings when they are LONG relievers/.
I still can't believe that a lame ass offense like SF pulled that rally off....
and Lou just sat and let it crumble in front of him…I’m guessing Marmol is not going to get any more votes of confidence from Pinella….and now we have a hole in the pen to fill…oh well…still in first place…..what inning will this be over in?????
I was out watching the game and left in the 7th and just came home to see this! What the hell, it looks like Marmol got rocked and Theriot made a bad error huh? Piniella should have left Harden in too. Garrrr
did it look like to you guys he threw way more sliders than fastballs. come on if you have a fastball at 94-96 use it, u don’t need to use the slider for everything. Its just frustrating, although he is a cub i’m glad the fans booed him badly. it might be a wakeup call
o btw i forgot to mention that lou pinella might be a good manager at some things but
he doesn’t know how to handle the bullpen. SEVEN run lead and you use everybody except your closer and your long reliever. That’s just stupid. There’s a reason why u have chad gaudin and there’s no excuse for using him for 2/3 of an inning. I woulda put him out there for the next inning. Lou is just stupid when it comes to pitchers, and neil cotts a third of an inning just not smart whatsoever.
..... this game and so many others, he leaves nothing on the table. The lows of the ninth and the joyful giggling of the 11th. He’s what it is all about.
As nice as it has to see them pull out a win after that horrible 9th, I’m pretty concerned right now about the pen. Marmol in his current state is unusable not only in close games, but in any game (as his performance with a 7-2 lead today demonstrated). And Wood seems unavailable – a blister situation – and let’s hope it’s not more than that. So the two relievers who proved most valuable the first three months of the season are question marks. I’m not panicking – I’m assuming Wood is OK and Marmol we already knew was having troubles. And we do have Gaudin. Marshall looked great today in relief. But still, I’m concerned.
I checked the score earlier, saw 7-0, and was happy. And I come to find out that Marmol gives up 5 and they have to win in extra innings?
Seriously, what the hell is wrong with Marmol? This wasn’t even walks that killed him. He needs to figure it out, cause I sure as hell don’t trust Bob Howry as our second best reliever. You need good relief to do well in the playoffs.
FINISH THE JOB, CUBS!

else agree we should let Howry walk this year for draft picks. We definitely need more youth in the minors if we want to catch up with other teams systems let alone keep up.
CHCOWNTHECENTRAL - July 12, 2008
He always does well in AAA
it just hasn’t carried over to the majors yet.
DTJchris - July 12, 2008
it can't
till he has another chance.
drewishdrewid - July 12, 2008
He was
hitting over .300 over the last couple of weeks he was up here when he was sent down he was hitting well in the majors it’s just that every time he doesn’t get a hit he strikes out and Lou wants him to at least put the ball into play.
CHCOWNTHECENTRAL - July 12, 2008
Or, you know
Walk.
slcathena - July 12, 2008
Don't get me wrong, I like Pie and want him to get a chance.
He won’t get a chance to prove it this year with Johnson and Edmonds. And I just don’t see Hendry going into next year with Pie as the expected starting CF. Its not every year you get a chance to pick up Edmonds and Johnson type players a month into the season. We were very lucky to get those guys.
DTJchris - July 12, 2008
I think
when rosters expand in Sept he’ll get the call up and Hendry should give him a few starts so he can possibly earn a chance for next year
CHCOWNTHECENTRAL - July 12, 2008
7-2... come on cubs
MiCubsFan - July 12, 2008

santoswoodenlegs - July 12, 2008

drewishdrewid - July 12, 2008
Totally agreed.
I was really hoping that was the plan originally, but was obviously wrong.

Wood has
so many saves because we turn games like this that should be blowouts into save situations for him
CHCOWNTHECENTRAL - July 12, 2008
and that's what a closer is actually for....no?
santoswoodenlegs - July 12, 2008
it 7-2
a save situation?
drewishdrewid - July 12, 2008
no.
slcathena - July 12, 2008
didn't think so.
Woody’s not available today anyway; he threw too many pitches yesterday.
drewishdrewid - July 12, 2008
I agree.
Up 5 and in the ASG, he should be on the bench.
slcathena - July 12, 2008
It's not yet
I’m just saying multiple times the bullpen has given up huge leads and it has required Wood and yes that’s what a closer is for but I would like to give his arm a little rest sometimes…you know to avoid the DL
CHCOWNTHECENTRAL - July 12, 2008
I believe the rule is
3 runs up or the tying run comes to plate.
BlueSox - July 12, 2008
Tying run on deck
when the relief pitcher comes in. It became a save situation when it was 7-3 and 2 men on.
ChipSet - July 12, 2008
It has indeed happened, but I don't know how common it is.
lostinthevines - July 12, 2008
It's a byproduct of two things
a) Not great middle relief.
b) failure to take advantage of multiple inning middle relievers. There is no reason that Gaudin couldn’t have pitched another there. And I’m exhausted, so it’s escaping me, but there was a similary example in the past week.
slcathena - July 12, 2008
+1
lostinthevines - July 12, 2008
I agree entirely
what is the purpose of LONG relievers if Lou throws them for one inning and thats it
CHCOWNTHECENTRAL - July 12, 2008
Exactly.
Guys like Lieber and Gaudin should come in for 2 or 3 innings in a situation like today where the pitcher doesn’t get out of the 6th.
slcathena - July 12, 2008
Marmol time in the 9th
nji232 - July 12, 2008

How much do you think a bullpen catcher makes?
To me, it seems to be the best job on the staff. Just wondering if you can survive as one.
lostinthevines - July 12, 2008
You have to actually be able to catch Major League fastballs, sliders, curveballs, changeups, knucklers....
probably tougher than it looks, but if you can do it? Sweet, sweet gig.
northsider - July 12, 2008
Barrett couldn't do that...and he made a pretty good living at it.
santoswoodenlegs - July 12, 2008
But he could hit ...
I’m guessing bullpen catchers can’t. : )
northsider - July 12, 2008
emphasis on "could"
santoswoodenlegs - July 12, 2008
And call pitches for people you don't work with that often.
I also just think catching is a brutal position physically, I have a lot of respect for catchers.

nji232 - July 12, 2008
There's no F'n good reason why Marmol should be pitching right now
I have no idea why Lou keeps throwing Marmol out there when we have leads of 4 and 5 runs.
This is the worst offense in the NL for crying out loud!
We’ll need him in October!
IllinoisCubs - July 12, 2008
he hasn't pitched in three days
RightFieldSucks - July 12, 2008
Yesterday......
IllinoisCubs - July 12, 2008
yesterday what?
Marmol didn’t pitch yesterday. Woody and Howry pitched yesterday.
drewishdrewid - July 12, 2008
is it not obvious to you at this point
that something’s wrong with him? He needs to work it out. You prefer he comes into a 2-1 game and pitch like this?
drewishdrewid - July 12, 2008
I'd prefer he not come in
It’s obvious no leasd is safe enough to be experimenting with him
lostinthevines - July 12, 2008
how does he get better, then?
drewishdrewid - July 12, 2008
well it could be because
he’s started to NOT be unhittable – so he wants to put him in safe situations to “figure it out”
cubsonWGN4ever - July 12, 2008
PArticularly since
It is especially stupid because if we didn’t use him tomorrow he’d have a week plus off.

Jayo525 - July 12, 2008
Two bad throws by Theriot this inning
and this one was extra costly.

The first one was not his fault
nice play by the runner to take him out. The second yes very much his fault
Jayo525 - July 12, 2008
angry.....very...very.....angry....
cavebear - July 12, 2008
No reason not to pull him
unless no one else is ready. Lou should’ve had someone warming up after the 1st hit off Marmol. This is ridiculous.
sparky39762 - July 12, 2008
Stupid LOU and Riot

why stupid Lou?

lostinthevines - July 12, 2008
Uh, for those of us on gameday, how did they just get two runs on a ball hit to the shortstop?
northsider - July 12, 2008
Theriot just threw the ball in the air
nji232 - July 12, 2008
straight up?

Diving stop and threw
it into right field.
Morg98 - July 12, 2008
Awesome.

Actually it says 7-6, is it not tied?
northsider - July 12, 2008
it's tied
Emelie - July 12, 2008
Theriot did a good job to get it to
but instead of getting into a position to throw, just heaved it up there over the 2b’s head
Jayo525 - July 12, 2008
Stupidity
both him and Lou. Marmol had absolutely nothing
Jayo525 - July 12, 2008
well, he was on his back.
there was no play. He shoudl have held onto the ball.
drewishdrewid - July 12, 2008
Why the hell was Marmol still in?

No idea. pretty obvious he doesnt have it.

Marshall's not ready

drewishdrewid - July 12, 2008
Very non-allstar like.
santoswoodenlegs - July 12, 2008
No reason to throw that
and NO REASON for Marmol to be in the game. Lou and Theriot dumbasses
Jayo525 - July 12, 2008
holy crap

puckishcubsfan - July 12, 2008
And you

this is precisely the situation you put a struggling stopper into.

You don't leave him there to give the game away.

Morg98 - July 12, 2008

drewishdrewid - July 12, 2008
You also make sure you have a back up warmed up

that blows

drewishdrewid - July 12, 2008
Wood isnt availible....not sure if that has been mentioned
JB 23 - July 12, 2008
I agree
But he’s struggled in this situation the last few times he’s been in it. It’ll be the last for a while. Hendry pulled the trigger on Wuertz; don’t be surprised if he does the same for Marmol
lostinthevines - July 12, 2008
as a theriot defender...
that was just unbelievably boneheaded. should’ve eaten that one.

IowaCubs- - July 12, 2008
OK let's get Marmol a well-deserved Win
j/k. And then Marmol takes Harden to Morton’s tonight.
ChipSet - July 12, 2008
Howry should have pitched the 9th
I said it when Marmol went in. Let Marmol clear his head over the all star break. Lou blew this game.

I should have pitched the 9th

IowaCubs- - July 12, 2008

Jayo525 - July 12, 2008

santoswoodenlegs - July 12, 2008

IowaCubs- - July 12, 2008

razzpunk - July 12, 2008
Or is Pattersons him and he'll never be the same.
santoswoodenlegs - July 12, 2008
Do you think he doesn't know
he’s been awful? He doesn’t need booing to tell him that. If he could turn a switch on and fix it he would. None of us know what it’s like to be in that situation.

sanantonecub - July 12, 2008

CHCOWNTHECENTRAL - July 12, 2008
Lou is hurting Marmol
by basically exploiting him. Doesn’t help anyone else’s psyche in the bullpen either when they don’t get a chance in a crucial situation. That is if you think there’s a mental part to this game….
Jayo525 - July 12, 2008
Honest question:
what happened to the best set-up man in baseball?
DTJchris - July 12, 2008
Combination of overuse, lost confidence in his fastball, and Lou not taking him out of the game
nji232 - July 12, 2008
Theriot Did Him No Favors
HORRIBLE attempt to get the runner at 2nd.
CaliCub - July 12, 2008

He has lost confidence in his fastball.

But to many fans if you don’t hit homeruns you’re worthless.

This is getting beyond ridiculous. Calling Lou a crappy manager because he managed a bad game saying the team is not a winning team for playing a bad game.
And Theriot (of course I remember how the homerun lovers don’t value OBP) of course is the worst player in the history of the game.
puckishcubsfan - July 12, 2008
agreed.
Even the best have off days. The sky is not falling.
jajonez77 - July 12, 2008
But why did Lou use so many pitchers....
in a game that was well in hand? Five in the first eight innings.
mondello58 - July 12, 2008
This is my concern with not using Gaudin correctly.
slcathena - July 12, 2008
Every other pitcher was
in there for a short amount of time. But for whatever reason, Marmol had an extra long leash.
Morg98 - July 12, 2008
Yeah.
That’s a concern too.
slcathena - July 12, 2008
lou isnt a crappy manager
but he SERIOUSLY needs to rethink his bullpen use. using 5 different relievers a game is recipe for landing 1 that is having an off day and messing it up. let gaudin pitch 2 innings or hell….EVEN THREE!!
WUSTLCubsFan - July 12, 2008
well i partially agree
but theriot has the worst range for shortstops in baseball i think he is so over rated.

and Lou just sat and let it crumble in front of him…I’m guessing Marmol is not going to get any more votes of confidence from Pinella….and now we have a hole in the pen to fill…oh well…still in first place…..what inning will this be over in?????
razzpunk - July 12, 2008
I get all pissed off
then I look over to see my 3-year-old baby girl sleeping on the couch, and I’m calmed.
Thank God this isn’t Game 7 of the W.S., or it would matter

I am relying on yahoo and following comments and I thought I had missed something and we were losing.

Please stop that
damn repeating yourself. You did so well for a few weeks and now you are back doing it again.
sue369 - July 12, 2008
This game was well in hand
it deflates the winning team and ignites the other team. This game will result in a loss.
mgfabc - July 12, 2008
flair for the melodrama, huh?
RightFieldSucks - July 12, 2008
where do you people come from?
It’s amazing how the negative nellies magically appear when the Cubs are flailing. Like gnats. Sheesh.

I think I love you
I have yet to disagree with anything you’ve said

Lou Must Know
that St Louis and Milwaukee are going to lose today, the way he just left Marmol out there to hang himself.

Mis-managed, Marmol should have been long gone…..Marmol needs to go to Iowa to find a fastball and home plate.

all you BCBers come in off the ledge!
LAcarl519 - July 12, 2008
Who do we have left in the pen?
Just Leiber and Wood?
I assume Lou doesn’t want to use Wood or he would have brought him in for the save earlier?
Texas Wahoo - July 12, 2008
I think hes just trying to get all the guys some work
because you cant leave the relievers without work from now until the end of the allstar break
SouthsideCUBSfan - July 12, 2008
Wow
I was out watching the game and left in the 7th and just came home to see this! What the hell, it looks like Marmol got rocked and Theriot made a bad error huh? Piniella should have left Harden in too. Garrrr
SouthsideCUBSfan - July 12, 2008
um…. I’m with you. I fell asleep and wake up to this.
Villeslgr - July 12, 2008

the Pirate???
mondello58 - July 12, 2008
I like the current Harden strategy.
Let him get his win, build up a comfortable lead and take him out.
Schizo - July 12, 2008
wow marmol u need so help fast
did it look like to you guys he threw way more sliders than fastballs. come on if you have a fastball at 94-96 use it, u don’t need to use the slider for everything. Its just frustrating, although he is a cub i’m glad the fans booed him badly. it might be a wakeup call
lexmarklover - July 12, 2008
o btw i forgot to mention that lou pinella might be a good manager at some things but
he doesn’t know how to handle the bullpen. SEVEN run lead and you use everybody except your closer and your long reliever. That’s just stupid. There’s a reason why u have chad gaudin and there’s no excuse for using him for 2/3 of an inning. I woulda put him out there for the next inning. Lou is just stupid when it comes to pitchers, and neil cotts a third of an inning just not smart whatsoever.
lexmarklover - July 12, 2008
2 on, no one out
for Pete’s sake, win this thing!
deutschegirl67 - July 12, 2008
Hey, let's focus...
winning run on 2nd, no outs!
mondello58 - July 12, 2008
Damn!
One out – c’mon Reed! Take one for the team!
deutschegirl67 - July 12, 2008
Why
didn’t Fontenot bunt???
mondello58 - July 12, 2008
He did bunt
Bunt was too hard to 3rd and Marshall was thrown out.

Santo is so fun to listen to....
..... this game and so many others, he leaves nothing on the table. The lows of the ninth and the joyful giggling of the 11th. He’s what it is all about.
BeerCub - July 12, 2008
Concerned
As nice as it has to see them pull out a win after that horrible 9th, I’m pretty concerned right now about the pen. Marmol in his current state is unusable not only in close games, but in any game (as his performance with a 7-2 lead today demonstrated). And Wood seems unavailable – a blister situation – and let’s hope it’s not more than that. So the two relievers who proved most valuable the first three months of the season are question marks. I’m not panicking – I’m assuming Wood is OK and Marmol we already knew was having troubles. And we do have Gaudin. Marshall looked great today in relief. But still, I’m concerned.
danimal15 - July 12, 2008
WTF???
I checked the score earlier, saw 7-0, and was happy. And I come to find out that Marmol gives up 5 and they have to win in extra innings?
Seriously, what the hell is wrong with Marmol? This wasn’t even walks that killed him. He needs to figure it out, cause I sure as hell don’t trust Bob Howry as our second best reliever. You need good relief to do well in the playoffs.
MrNFL - July 12, 2008
Press Conference >>>
Lou is in a state of very, very, very deep denial about Marmol.
