Enough hype. Well, maybe not. I'm posting this more than two hours before game time, so I'm sure all of you can get into some more arguments about the game, the players, the announcers, the city it's being played in... just about anything, really.
Given the fact that you were all so chatty last night, I'll have an overflow thread posted at 9:00 pm CDT.
| Today's Starting Pitchers | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| All-Star Starting Lineups | |
| NL | AL |
| Ramirez, Fla, SS | Suzuki, Sea, RF |
| Utley, Phi, 2B | Jeter, NY, SS |
| Berkman, Hou, 1B | Hamilton, Tex, CF |
| Pujols, StL, DH | Rodriguez, NY, 3B |
| Jones, Atl, 3B | Ramirez, Bos, LF |
| Holliday, Col, RF | Bradley, Tex, DH |
| Braun, Mil, LF | Youkilis, Bos, 1B |
| Fukudome, CUBS, CF | Mauer, Min, C |
| Soto, CUBS, C | Pedroia, Bos, 2B |
Two Cubs are starting the ASG for the first time since 1991 (Andre Dawson and Ryne Sandberg). Ben Sheets is the first Brewer to ever be a starting All-Star pitcher. And Cliff Lee is the first Cleveland Indian to be the starting pitcher since 1996 (Charles Nagy). Which also happens to be the last time the NL won the game. Way past time to change that.
The game's on Fox. Thus, if you want to avoid Joe Buck & Tim McCarver & the 1,157 dugout reporters, you can turn the sound off, or "check local listings" for a radio affiliate. Here's the Mediacenter link for those of you with MLB.TV or MLB Audio.

Frist!
DTJchris - July 15, 2008
Hello!
and welcome to last week!
santoswoodenlegs - July 15, 2008
it was an homage to you SWL
DTJchris - July 15, 2008
OK...but don't do that...
the only person you should pay homage to is much more deserving than I will ever be.
santoswoodenlegs - July 15, 2008
Tough...meets classy...
NotSure - July 15, 2008
I won't
I thought the Frist thing was a good spin on the First thing, which I find kind of annoying, just posting, “First”
DTJchris - July 15, 2008
He's No Longer 1 of My Senators
memphiscub - July 15, 2008
Didn't
Ramirez and Lee start in ‘05??
TCobb1911 - July 15, 2008
I checked...
yes, Ramirez and Lee started for the 2005 NL team. Maybe there was an injury and one was not going to originally start…
TCobb1911 - July 15, 2008
Missed that one.
That’s the only one SINCE 1991.
Al Yellon - July 15, 2008
Ramirez started in 2005
because Scott Rolen was hurt.
cowsarecool220 - July 15, 2008
I'm
holding out as much hope as I can that the world series has 4 games at Wrigley Field and a NL victory will make it so. We all agree that the time has come, we’re way overdue.
mrcubsfan - July 15, 2008
that is why this game matters.
However, I believe home field should go to the team with the best record. i don’t believe that the All Star Game should count.
GateCity, VA Cubs Fan - July 15, 2008
Kind of interesting
Bud Selig was on Mike and Mike and he said the reason that the best record doesn’t get it, is because it would be too hard to get hotels and such with such a short notice. Therefore, it gives them some sort of breathing room when they know if it will be an AL or NL team.
TCobb1911 - July 15, 2008
I still don't get that.
They do it for the NLCS and ALCS when they don’t know who the teams are. Why is the WS different?
Al Yellon - July 15, 2008
Not only that.. they don't know who the city will be until a few days to a week
before the series. Unless they have some NBA stuff going on if you know what I mean. And we are talking about one game. So there will be 4 games in that city instead of 3. Does that make a difference?
LT - July 15, 2008
+1
I said this before I saw your comment.
slcathena - July 15, 2008
Cop. Out.
santoswoodenlegs - July 15, 2008
not to defend selig
but October is high tourism/convention season, so there is more than a grain of truth to his assertion. Hotels at that time are notoriously difficult to book in sufficient room blocks to accommodate a major sporting event.
Emelie - July 15, 2008
OMG! Teams might have to stay in a 3 star hotel? OH NOEZ!
This is bull-shit man. Bud the used car-salesman knows what the hell he is doing. This is a smoke-screen to cover his inept ass and the ridiculous decision he made.
How have these poor little baseball teams been able to make it work out EVERY OTHER FARKING YEAR?
santoswoodenlegs - July 15, 2008
In October
very often every hotel in the city, including craptastic ones are completely sold out. It happens often in Chicago and it happened to me more than once in DC… had to book a Holiday Inn in some far beyond nowhere suburb an hour outside of the city. Trust me - yeah I know ;}—it t happens. I’m reporting from professional and personal experience.
Emelie - July 15, 2008
I still want to know...
how have teams have been able to accommodate themselves in all the years past?
santoswoodenlegs - July 15, 2008
That I don't know
if it’s one team, it’s a deal with Hyatt or whoever. If it’s bringing the world to the city for a series that’s a different story.
Emelie - July 15, 2008
My point is just that...teams have been able to get rooms...
it’s not MLB’s obligation to make sure the world has easy, immediate access to a hotel room. You want to go to the WS? Buy a ticket and find a way to get there.
santoswoodenlegs - July 15, 2008
a little simplistic
but I’ll let you go …
Emelie - July 15, 2008
Simplistic? Are we arguing the same thing?
I understand Selig’s rational to be “we can’t give the team with the best record home-field for the WS because it won’t give the teams enough time to find/book hotel rooms for their organization.”
You?
santoswoodenlegs - July 15, 2008
Well sort of.
I’m arguing can’t book rooms for a World Series. Sounds like he’s arguing can’t book rooms for their organization. Unless I know the numbers I can’t say whether or not the organizational argument in valid or not. I do know that the World Series rooms for everybody, including press, organization, etc. is.
Emelie - July 15, 2008
My point is....
using that rational as the basis for keeping the current AS Game Winner getting WS HF Advantage Rule is ridonkulous.
Just like Bud Selig.
santoswoodenlegs - July 15, 2008
rationale...
northsider - July 16, 2008
Worst argument ever.
Seriously. Because they don’t even know who the TEAMS are until a week before.
slcathena - July 15, 2008
Then What You Do
is set up a lucrative co-branding deal with Hyatt, Hilton, or bloody Motel 6 if need be, whereby you have those chains reserve rooms in the big league cities likely to be postseason game hosts. Hell, have MLB kick in the extra cash it would take to add on to the existing banks of rooms!
Bud the Pud is just making excuses, trying to justify a piss-poor decision he made.
CaliCub - July 15, 2008
Um you do NOT want 4 games
I don’t need the tension of 7 games. A sweep with the first two at Wrigley is fine with me.
Doggie Stalker - July 15, 2008
actually
in that case, you don’t want home field advantage, because that way you sweep in four and win the second two at home.
drewishdrewid - July 15, 2008
Just let the NL win this one.
sue369 - July 15, 2008
Who exactly are you pleading with? The AL? God?
santoswoodenlegs - July 15, 2008
yeah, i wouldn't even try with god
because it seems hamilton has him on his side…
nathew - July 15, 2008
You don't have to put "The" before my name.
;)
Al Yellon - July 15, 2008
Well played my good man....
santoswoodenlegs - July 15, 2008
But there's no "the" in front of "God", Al ;-)
All hail Al, the “god” of BCB!
NotSure - July 15, 2008
but there is before "fool"

sue369 - July 15, 2008

The stangecargo.com t-shirt ads on this page have been replaced by Billy Ray Cyrus ringtones and laser hair removal machines.
JohnM - July 15, 2008
Odd.
I don’t see those. I see a Wii ad.
Al Yellon - July 15, 2008

JohnM - July 15, 2008

I’m glad he got himself straight but this is getting ridiculous. I guess it’s another ESPN over kill….
LT - July 15, 2008
Agree that it is getting a bit over the top...
...but I guess people like and need stories these days about triumph in the face of adversity (even if it’s self-inflicted adversity).
It is a bit unbelievable that he took three years off, played some A-ball, and a year later he’s got 95 big league RBI’s at the ASB.
NotSure - July 15, 2008
You know....
Watching this “parade” makes me pray even harder the Cubs can win it all this year.
Im so tired of New York
Galvan316 - July 15, 2008
There's a parade?
An even better reason to not turn the TV on till 7:00.
Al Yellon - July 15, 2008
Might want to
make sure you even have a signal. Comcast in my area is having “problems”
giddyup - July 15, 2008

NPB All Star Game(s)
Good morning from Okinawa. Today’s game will be televised live on NHK HD – I will watch on 1080i HD…. it will be fun.
In Japan, we have 2 All Star Games by NPB in 2 different ballparks every year – Game 1 in Osaka and Game 2 in Yokohama this year. We had 3-game series previously, so it was longer break for players who don’t participate it…
dragonsfanatic - July 15, 2008
A three game all-star break?!
Wow, how do they players react to that?
Dan
dtpollitt - July 15, 2008
Well, it was normal thing...
As we had 3 different pairs of starting pitchers, managers will use players from the area closer to host city… players had fun I believe, both selected and non-selected….
dragonsfanatic - July 15, 2008
Can someone explain to me...
...how this parade is going on, and the game starts in an hour?? Shouldn’t the guys be dressed, ready for the damn game?!
Dan
dtpollitt - July 15, 2008
Taped Earlier this afternoon
Perhaps?
Galvan316 - July 15, 2008

The fact that the winner of the game gets an extra WS game.

Selig's "State of MLB Address"...read this ridiculousness:
MLB commissioner Bud Selig gave a state of the game address on Tuesday. Among his key points:
• Instant replay could be in place for this season’s postseason.
• Baseball is looking into the threat of maple bats shattering and injuring players.
• The winning league in the All-Star Game getting home-field advantage in the World Series is a success.
• Certain teams need new ballparks to remain viable.
• Despite economic struggles in the country, baseball is doing well.

slcathena - July 15, 2008
Well, because despite what Bud would have you think
It’s an exhibition game.
Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008
That determines homefield in the WS
Which seems important to me this year.
I’m just annoyed at Fox.
slcathena - July 15, 2008
I am, too
They have something to do w/home field being decided here.
Where were you when I had my fanpost suggesting we vote for the worst A.L. players to rig the game and mock the system?
Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008
Because then they would have to talk about someone other than the Yankees
And this is THE MASSIVELY HISOTRIC YANKEE STADIUM, MORE HISTORIC THAN ANY OTHER ON THE CONTINENT.
So that just wouldn’t be right.
Besides, you just want to look at Geo.
cocknfire - July 15, 2008
Damn straight I want to look at Geo.
slcathena - July 15, 2008
What's wrong with
wanting to look at Geo?
sue369 - July 15, 2008
Not saying anything wrong with it
Just saying
cocknfire - July 15, 2008
Oh no!
dragonsfanatic - July 15, 2008
I'd love to play for the Carp
Great team name
Lloyd - July 15, 2008

dragonsfanatic - July 15, 2008
I wonder if he's related to Ohman
Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008
Or Yoko...
Bump Bailey - July 15, 2008
good point
That one’s more obvious, isn’t it? Must be the beer.
Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008

Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008
Patience, Geo, patience
cocknfire - July 15, 2008
Did they even mention there's a NEW pitcher?
cowsarecool220 - July 15, 2008
This is a horrible interview, I'm sorry.
dtpollitt - July 15, 2008
Joe Buck and Tim McCarver could make a crossfire interview between Jesus and the devil boring.
Bildo1805 - July 15, 2008
+1
God these dudes suck.
slcathena - July 15, 2008
Where's Joe Morgan when you need him?
sweetswinger - July 15, 2008
Having never needed him, I have no answer.
Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008
Don't be sorry.
It’s true.
And since when do you need to SHOW THE INTERVIEW! Can’t they show the game and we can listen to the interview? Dude.
slcathena - July 15, 2008
yes, that would make sense
Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008
"sense"
is a concept that obviously escapes them.
slcathena - July 15, 2008
and most of MLB management, unfortunately
Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008

Now have him find some nice, safe bench somewhere.
cwyers - July 15, 2008
Well, you know
He won’t have that dangerous job of hitting and running, so he should be fine.

Chanman25 - July 15, 2008

Off the wall like that is a double

slcathena - July 15, 2008
Pujols ran on Ichiro?
californiachicagoan - July 15, 2008
Yeah, not recommended.
slcathena - July 15, 2008
Plays in front of him, does he not know who Ichiro is?
I hope someone tries that on Dome!
californiachicagoan - July 15, 2008
Bad Call...

Chanman25 - July 15, 2008

Bildo1805 - July 15, 2008
Theriot!
You shouldn’t be at the all star game, go home with your wife and new daughter!
slcathena - July 15, 2008
Bad defense by the NL so far
cowsarecool220 - July 15, 2008
so far, this NL infield has nothing on our crew :-(
LAcarl519 - July 15, 2008
Shawon would've poured it in there

Galvan316 - July 15, 2008

LAcarl519 - July 15, 2008
I think I am correct, but the last time that happened during an Allstar game

Chanman25 - July 15, 2008
Hmmmmm.....
Do 8 Cub All-Stars make a gaggle?
cowsarecool220 - July 15, 2008
Let's plate one for Z!
sweetswinger - July 15, 2008
Ahem
The Angels are TIED for the best record in baseball, Fox.
slcathena - July 15, 2008
You think McCarver's a fox?
Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008
Boo!!!
I walked in as they were saying and and wasn’t sure if it was Tim or Buck. So I didn’t specify.
slcathena - July 15, 2008

Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008

Bildo1805 - July 15, 2008
not official game yet
Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008
right, but soon. just saying, there's more runs to be scored the longer the game goes on.
Bildo1805 - July 15, 2008
true
Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008
Who says Matt Holliday can't hit home runs outside of Coors Field?
cowsarecool220 - July 15, 2008
Ervin Santana can't pitch on the road.
Something had to give!
californiachicagoan - July 15, 2008
Z in line for the W now
DC Cubbie - July 15, 2008
That would be so sweet
Was I being biased or did he look better than Ben tonight? Because he looked better to me.
slcathena - July 15, 2008
He looked much better than Sheets
californiachicagoan - July 15, 2008
Did he look better than Geo
to you?
Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008
After that 3 pitch K?
Yes, but it’s temporary. :P
slcathena - July 15, 2008
Z subscribed to the "Bull Durham" theory...
“Strikeouts are fascist….throw some ground balls, more democratic…”
NotSure - July 15, 2008
Flag
Would that authorize flying the flag?
08Cubs - July 15, 2008
nah
Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008
Man
There are a lot of Cubs in that dugout. I love it.
slcathena - July 15, 2008
Since Holliday started in place of Soriano,
we can credit that run to a Cub, right?
jbau - July 15, 2008
Come on Dome!
Hit it here!
dragonsfanatic - July 15, 2008
Dome...
Not looking good.
DaBard - July 15, 2008
Blah.
He did not look good on that pitch. :(
slcathena - July 15, 2008
Oh no...
That was nasty breaking ball…
dragonsfanatic - July 15, 2008
Yep.
Sorry Dragon. :( He’s been good in the field though, so that’s something. :)
slcathena - July 15, 2008
man our guys looked bad there
DC Cubbie - July 15, 2008
Yeah.
That wasn’t great.
slcathena - July 15, 2008
Together
They lowered the temperature at Yankee Stadium by 10 degrees.
sweetswinger - July 15, 2008
Kosuke
an all too familiar sight lately.
They need to go to a straight platoon after the break.
Matt Allison - July 15, 2008
um no?
LT - July 15, 2008
+1
Dude. He’ll snap out of it.
slcathena - July 15, 2008
He's exhausted.
If he’s going to be worth anything in October, he needs to be rested more in the second half.
Matt Allison - July 15, 2008
terrible idea.
platoon with who???
Bildo1805 - July 15, 2008
New outfield for the NL this inning?
californiachicagoan - July 15, 2008
Is it Nate "The Great" time?
cowsarecool220 - July 15, 2008
Indeed.
slcathena - July 15, 2008
If the NL had scored earlier
and the lead held up, would they give the W to Sheets? Normally a starter has to go 5 innings for a Win, but I wonder if that’s waived for the All-Star Game.
ChipSet - July 15, 2008
yes, Sheet could have gotten it in that situation
Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008
*Sheets
Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008
Number of innings for a starter doesn't matter in AS game
cowsarecool220 - July 15, 2008
Awww. :( Bye Dome and Geo!
:(
Aram better come in here at some point!
slcathena - July 15, 2008
What the?
You keep Braun and Holliday’s D out there and pull Dome? What is this anti Cub bias?
californiachicagoan - July 15, 2008
Yep. That's it.
Hurdle doesn’t care if they win, he just wants to stick it to the Cubs. The rest of the NL won’t mind.
Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008
I find it weirder to pull Soto.
Is Martin really better than Soto?
slcathena - July 15, 2008
Got to let the others play, too
Shanghai Badger - July 15, 2008
you guys need to take it easy
brownbuddha - July 15, 2008
