Have the Cubs ever had a pitcher make the All Star team once as a starter and once as a reliever? If Kerry makes the team he’d obviously be it. How many besides Smoltz have been as both?
but I was refuting the Cards & Brewers never lose bit. in fact, I started my reply to him as AZ had two on and one out. (yeah, it pissed me off that the DP happened while I was typing).
and, Lincecum isn’t invulnerable. let’s get this one first, then worry about tomorrow.
just kidding, but I think the commercials for Valtrex and the VIagra shit JUST SUCK…..........what is this country coming to? Isn’t anyone else offended?
I didn’t really call it, I’m just drunk, and when I’m drunk and I always remember Bob saying that he had sneaky power and me and my buddy laughing forever about it. I’ll take the run though.
My favorite game thread was a poster claiming Wood was the worst closer of all time because the bases were loaded and we were going to lose the game and the Cubs would lose 10 in a row.
If I remember correctly Wood got out of the 9th and has been on fire ever since,
Just saying we better finish this game tonight because Lincecum is an extremely tough matchup tomorrow. And our lineup isn’t exactly intimidating lately
IThis is going to be weird but bear with me, One of the biggest reasons I think we will hold on in this division and go places doesn’t play coach or manage, We have the best GM in our division,
“It was the trade deadline, the last real chance contending teams had to acquire vital ingredients for their World Series brews. Jim Hendry lived for days like this one. His cell phone unsheathed, the GM was working frantically to make Cubdom’s dreams come true.”—Wrigley Blues, by William J. Wagner
Anyone with one of those old, big, talk to aliens, satellites? I remember my uncle had one and I could see almost any sporting event I wanted without having to hear horrible announcers. This ESPN, gameday isn’t cutting it.
• Edmonds with another great night – 2 walks, a single, and an HR. I admit being wrong about him and thinking he was done. Will he get Player of the Month?
• Marmol needs to stop shaking off his catcher and he also needs to quit walking people. Not sure if he’s trying to be a little too clever out there or if it’s the jitters or what. Just bear down, stay focused, and throw quality strikes!
• Nice at-bat by Soto, settling for the line drive up the middle and knocking in the 4th and 5th runs. Even Mike Murphy is on the Geo bandwagon – today he predicted that Soto would be the greatest Cubs catcher ever.
• Another round goes to Mike Fontenot. Every time I criticize his shortcomings (no pun intended) he goes and hits an HR.
• Cardinals and Brewers won. So be it. I bring up the past seasons of futility as much as anyone here, but now is not the time to develop a mental block about 1969, Bartman, Durham’s glove, etc.. You study the advance scouting reports the best you can and then you go out and hand the competition a loss.
• Can’t wait to get ARam, Johnson, and Zambrano back. Nice to hear Soriano is on track to come back earlier than expected. Another 9-game winning streak would sure help!
its all good, loved my time in LA but haven’t looked back since…..dodgers cubs series out there last year was brutal, never been hit with so many dodger dogs in my life
the all you can eat section is just a bunch of high school groups that shouldn’t be there…..i liked the stadium, the crowd on the other hand was garbage!
It’s only OK if you yell and scream for the Dodgers. I swear it was like being at a HS basketball game, the way they forcefully mandate rooting for the home team.
santa monica promenade…....or at least the twin sister….the original up in hollywood (i think) was the last place janis joplin was seen alive and the favorite watering hole of jim morrison
Where is our Carlos? You would think, with a mid 90’s fastball, he would just go and dominate….PLEASE, Mr. Marmol, put that slider in yer pocket…..dominate with the fast ball, leave the slider for a secondary pitch….....
i said woody shouldn’t be the closer, lieber should be in the rotation over dempster and pie should be on the roster over than fonte….shut my effin mouth, it feels good to say that
I’m sitting in my computer room holding my portable radio at just the right angle so that WGN Radio is fading in and out, listening to them call the game, watching MLB Gameday. Faded just on Strike three, but I could hear their voices raised in happiness over strike three. Thank God, my arm was getting tired.
We needed this one.
You know, I haven’t done stuff like this to follow the Cubs since I was a senior in high school in 1969. I’m too old for this, but I can’t help myself.
The game was broadcast around the world to 176 countries and more than 200 U.S. Navy ships as part of “Salute to the Military Night” by the Giants and Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. (here)
pie had an amazing throw tonight that reminded all of dsm why he has major league skill…...didn’t see it but i had plentey of people tell me tonight it was like the rick ankiel throw from right to third on the fly
love this blog…....what do you think about the Cubs for the first time if as far as I can remember, having to play with the bullseye on their back? Every team gets “up” for us when we come to town…..as well as the crowd…..love to hear your opinion on it
I am sorry that I thought so bad of you when Hendry signed you. You took Perry’s advice and have become a Cub to be dealt with by our opposition. I am sorry that I doubted you. I hate crow, it tastes like shit…....

This team is imploding
CubsBall2202 - July 2, 2008
Oh please.
slcathena - July 2, 2008
Oh, calm down
Or quit watching.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 2, 2008
St Louis and Milwaukee already have victories tonight
and seemingly do not lose anymore
CubsBall2202 - July 2, 2008
we're in first
they are chasing us. calm the hell down.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 2, 2008
Milwaukee game just ended
but wasn’t over when you posted. calm down
Shanghai Badger - July 2, 2008
Dude. We're in first still.
Calm down. This is the cubs without RJ, Sori, Z, Rami…get a grip.
slcathena - July 2, 2008
I don't see how that qualifies as an overreaction to calm down
Simply stating the facts. Plus wood is starting to become the only one in the pen taht can be trusted.
CubsBall2202 - July 2, 2008
That the Brewers and Cardinals never lose? Not a fact.
The Brewers hadn’t even won when you said that they had. And—Webb pitches against them tomorrow.
Shanghai Badger - July 2, 2008
Agree with you generally
But don’t forget we face Lincecum…
cocknfire - July 2, 2008
not tonight we don't.
btw, HR hamster
Shanghai Badger - July 2, 2008
Again, agree with not saying the world is ending
Just saying, both teams face tough pitchers tomorrow
cocknfire - July 2, 2008
sure, not denying that
but I was refuting the Cards & Brewers never lose bit. in fact, I started my reply to him as AZ had two on and one out. (yeah, it pissed me off that the DP happened while I was typing).
and, Lincecum isn’t invulnerable. let’s get this one first, then worry about tomorrow.
Shanghai Badger - July 2, 2008
Def agree on worrying about this one first
cocknfire - July 2, 2008
no need to panic; that's basically my point
granted, I’ll be pissed if the Cubs lose, but I won’t panic.
Shanghai Badger - July 2, 2008
I give up
If you want to crap your pants, go right ahead.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 2, 2008
lol
sue369 - July 2, 2008
I'll just add this
We are going to need a frontline starter, and a top of the line bullpen arm if we want to win a championship
CubsBall2202 - July 2, 2008
sharting
is the preferred verb
Fukudometer - July 2, 2008
Well, follow them, then
And quit watching the Cubs.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 2, 2008
You mean the same Cardinals who gained 1 game when we went 4-8?
puckishcubsfan - July 2, 2008

Notes
Another 9-game winning streak would sure help!

the all you can eat section is just a bunch of high school groups that shouldn’t be there…..i liked the stadium, the crowd on the other hand was garbage!
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
I was once told to quiet down by an usher
because we were too loud. so I never went back except for a game when my secretary sang the national anthem. I hate the place.
LAcarl519 - July 3, 2008
Absolutely True
It’s only OK if you yell and scream for the Dodgers. I swear it was like being at a HS basketball game, the way they forcefully mandate rooting for the home team.
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
terrible
i asked lapd to watch a fan video taping me, during the game, and they didn’t do anything about him….seriously, who lets a camcorder in the stadium?
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
That Would Be Scary
Then again, LAPD isn’t always the most efficient law enforcement agency out there.
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
exactly
with that said, my favorite sports bar in LA was barneys beanery….home of the LA i-club and home to a bunch of midwester boys that love the hawkeyes
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
where is Barney's Beanery?
LAcarl519 - July 3, 2008
Franklin and LaCienega
in Hollywood.
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
santa monica
santa monica promenade…....or at least the twin sister….the original up in hollywood (i think) was the last place janis joplin was seen alive and the favorite watering hole of jim morrison
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
3rd St Promenade in SaMo
has a Michigan Wolverines bar I used to frequent. It might still be there.
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
I knew I had seen it!
it looks like a great spot for games.
LAcarl519 - July 3, 2008
good times.....
night u left coasters….how bout them cubbies (or hawkeyes)?!
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
wolverines?
do the hawks need to go to the big house and dominate some more?
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
Ouch
Hopefully Rich Rodriguez can do something about that!
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
haha
i can’t talk…...my boy kirk needs to get us back to the national spotlight, we were so close for 3 year there…..that’s all you gotta say to us
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
Now I just watch every game on DirecTV with
my dogs (my wife will some times watch). Much better than ever going to games. I manage to see 95% of Cub games on TV or computer. Can’t complain.
Good night!!
LAcarl519 - July 3, 2008
Me Too
Cubs on TV with the wife and the dogs. Have a good evening!
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
just north
first “town” you hit if you were to go north of lax…....although little playa is getting taken over by lax…....where you at? el segundo?
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
what about you?
where are you? one year ago i was watching fireworks off of torrence
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
Fuentes..
I hope that Marmol gets his stuff back together….but Hendry needs to beat the Cardinals, Brewers, Rays to this guy just in case….
TheRiot Police - July 3, 2008
Pen Fortification Would Be Nice
as would a couple more solid bats off the bench. Do your stuff, Jim!
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
agreed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where is our Carlos? You would think, with a mid 90’s fastball, he would just go and dominate….PLEASE, Mr. Marmol, put that slider in yer pocket…..dominate with the fast ball, leave the slider for a secondary pitch….....
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
fuentes is nasty
he’s gonna be tough to get.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
Probably so
But I don’t think that we can count Cotts and Eyre to be our left handed guys. Plus he can be bridge to woody if Marmol continues to struggle.
Need to at least kick the tires a little….
TheRiot Police - July 3, 2008
Flipping Dish went out right before lewis....
TheRiot Police - July 3, 2008
plate full of crow
i said woody shouldn’t be the closer, lieber should be in the rotation over dempster and pie should be on the roster over than fonte….shut my effin mouth, it feels good to say that
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
yah
shut your mouth!!!!!!!!!!!
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
Game not on TV here in Denver.
Go Cubs.
Cubfansince1957 - July 3, 2008
Never too old cf1957
UTCUBS - July 3, 2008

Soto had a great day too, though. :)
slcathena - July 3, 2008
he sure did
sue369 - July 3, 2008
he did indeed
that 2 run single was huge
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
and the double, when edmonds drove him in!
slcathena - July 3, 2008
Just got my SI in the mail today.....
was reading the story about Tim Lincecum. Made me think of Mike Fontenot when he hit the home run.
cowsarecool220 - July 3, 2008
MightyHamster, as SWL says....
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
HBC, you're 1-0 w/ GA
Keep the streak alive!
Jayo525 - July 3, 2008

thanks again, buddy.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
Good game, all!
See you tomorrow, and let’s light up Lincecum! Even the best pitchers have off days!!!
slcathena - July 3, 2008

halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008

LAcarl519 - July 3, 2008
Fun with highlights
WGN played Fontenot’s HR at the same time that ESPN showed it. Pefectly in synch.
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
*perfectly
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
Question for anyone still awake
Ramirez is back tomorrow, and Z on Friday, but when is Reed back? Edmonds is a gamer and a half, but he needs to rest.
louslovechild - July 3, 2008
Reed is eligible to be back tomorrow
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
Send EPat down
and activate Reed.
Itchy - July 3, 2008
Agreed...and, I want to know
why Patterson is our LH pinch hitter when Hoff is available
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
Keep it going tomorrow!!
Let’s knock Linecum out of the box!!
Itchy - July 3, 2008
Came back to add this fun game not:e
The game was broadcast around the world to 176 countries and more than 200 U.S. Navy ships as part of “Salute to the Military Night” by the Giants and Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. (here)
Very cool of MLB to do that.
Come home soon & safe!
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
+1
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
Can't say it better....
EVERY game should be broadcast to our kids….after all, they are the ones who make it possible to have our spoiled lifestyle….
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
And, I might add....
SF should lose ALL federal funding…...
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
The 3 Last Communist Strongholds
China, Cuba, and the Bay Area! LOL
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
You forgot Venezuela.....
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
True
and I guess North Korea, too.
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
This is one of the 6 times in modern history...
that MLB did something right.
Congratulations MLB….
santoswoodenlegs - July 3, 2008
Name the other 5?
northsider - July 4, 2008
+ alot! Very cool indeed.
(and I came back because I couldn’t sleep yet…) :P
slcathena - July 3, 2008
Very nice indeed.
My cousin got to come home last month after a year in Iraq. I hope he gets to stay home now.
sue369 - July 3, 2008
whou woulda thought
a game against the giants could feel so big? time to get rj, z and sori back…..so we can get back to our winning ways, whaddya say cubs nation?
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
Well, tomorrow we get Rami and RJ back....
that is a great start, eh?
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
4-3 Road Trip
would sure be nice, although 3-4 is probably more likely.
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
blues brothers
lets get the band back together
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
Jesus H. Tapdancing Christ
THE BAND!
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
Great, I volunteer to be a guitarist.....
but who replaces Belushi?
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
lou
you know that guy can throw um back like john
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
Blue Lou!
Wailing on the sax
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
I was gonna say Harry....
however, Lou would be great, considering!!!
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
Nah, we can hit Lincecum (sp?).....
but, can our bullpen hold up?
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
i think
just like we have the bullseye on us, the cubs lineup will be amped to hit lincecum…..they’ll get up for this one
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
I agree....
especially since the Cards refuse to play to their talent level…..
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
Does StL Play Tomorrow?
One more vs. the Mets?
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
They have to play someone.....
the St.Lou announcers last night said they had no day off until the end of the homestand
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
Gotcha, Thanks
Whatever happens, if the Cubs can come home still in 1st then they’ll still be in good shape.
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
Not Positive About Tomorrow
and I think we only win 1 in StL. Hopefully the Cubs will make like Fontenot and prove me dead wrong!
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
cubs
this team finds a way…....aram will be back in a big way
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
ps....minor league report
pie had an amazing throw tonight that reminded all of dsm why he has major league skill…...didn’t see it but i had plentey of people tell me tonight it was like the rick ankiel throw from right to third on the fly
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
I am just wondering WHY.....
we didn’t have one pitcher come in for ONE pitch…..to plunk one of the Giants…...
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
Get Marquis To
do it tomorrow.
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
I do NOT believe it was just random wildness tonight.....
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
Al
love this blog…....what do you think about the Cubs for the first time if as far as I can remember, having to play with the bullseye on their back? Every team gets “up” for us when we come to town…..as well as the crowd…..love to hear your opinion on it
cubswynn - July 3, 2008
'Night All
Will be back tomorrow before the game.
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
Sleep well!
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
To: Jim Edmonds
From: crazymountain
I am sorry that I thought so bad of you when Hendry signed you. You took Perry’s advice and have become a Cub to be dealt with by our opposition. I am sorry that I doubted you. I hate crow, it tastes like shit…....
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
Phew…was reading and not contributing tonight.
Glad to have the W under our belt.
See ya tomorrow
Aussie Cub - July 3, 2008
I gotta go too....
cyotes out back, gotta get the .357….see y’all next time!!!
Good Night!
crazymountain - July 3, 2008
Thursday morning questions
Missed most of the game, except for when my dog woke me up and I watched Soto’s RBI single and then went back to bed.
Question 1: What’s with those hats the Cubs were wearing? New last night? Looked good….
Question 2: Has ballhawk ever ballhawked on the road? Bay Area kayak style?
Question 3: Can the Cardinals series get here quicker please?
JohnM - July 3, 2008
answers
1) hats for “support the troops” night.
2) I don’t know, but kayaking is fun.
3) Almost here. One more game with Giants than BEDLAM!
