Kerry Wood's blister is sending him to the DL -- maybe. (This could bring Scott Eyre back to the active roster, and Wood would be eligible to return next Sunday.)
Alfonso Soriano's playing in an AZL game today (game time: noon CDT) and could return to the active roster tonight -- maybe. (Lou gives it a 25% chance of happening.)
A couple of interesting notes from Gordon Wittenmyer:
• • Carlos Zambrano's home run Saturday was the fourth of his career at Minute Maid Park, more than any other pitcher -- including Astros -- at the ballpark.
• • Shortstop Ryan Theriot's three-hit day extended his career-high hitting streak to 13 games, during which he's batting .439 (25-for-57).
Finally, a big thank you to BCB reader Louie, who is responsible for the design of the BCB T-shirt now on sale at strangecargo.com (shameless plug, but remember $8 from every shirt sale goes to Derrek Lee's Project 3000). Louie has designed some BCB-themed wallpapers that you can download and use free of charge, and has set up this Flickr account to make that easy. Thanks, Louie -- and everyone enjoy.

Everyone just relax...
It’s a blister and the DL stint is retroactive to the 12th. He’ll be back before you know it…. I’m thinking if Fonzie does well this morning, he’ll be back tonight at Chase Field. For the club even to talk about tonight, that means he’s got no pain.
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
Not so much worried about Sori's hitting
cause I know he’ll do fine with the bat. I just hope he plays a few minor league games so he can easily judge routine fly balls this time around. The Iowa Cubs are in Tucson for 4 days. That’s pretty convenient… Let him play some outfield there and bring him up Wednesday.

carmen_fanzone - July 21, 2008
Al, it took me one minute to find a borderline call that went Backe's way.
That’s it. 1 minute. In fact, it was the very first batter he faced after doing something in which you said he’d never ever ever get a borderline call in his favor. It was the 5th pitch after doing something in which you said would have a lasting impact on the rest of Backe’s career. 1 minute. Had you taken 1 minute you too could have seen this and it would have saved you from making a completely and totally erroneous comment and then trying to pass it on to me to prove it’s incorrect.
Even thought it was not in any way my responsibility to prove incorrect something you have not proven, I did anyway. Because it took all of one minute. And had “you watched the game” you’d know these things happen. I mean, for crying out loud, Al, the guy didn’t even get ejected and you were thinking this was going to have a lasting impact? Yeah, it lasted so long as to not have any impact as I said.
Here’s the Gameday image of Aramis Ramirez’s at-bat leading off the 6th inning, which was the first batter he faced after his tantrum. Before you say Gameday isn’t accurate you should know that it is accurate to within one-third of a baseball.
Maddog - July 21, 2008
wow you are really into proving this.
Madison Cub Fan - July 21, 2008
He had the nerve to tell me to prove it, so I did.
And here’s more evidence. The batter after Ramirez, Jim Edmonds, with another borderline strike call. It was on the corner, but you’d think if an umpire was holding a grudge, this is one he could easily call a ball. So the first 2 strike calls in the very next inning were borderlilne. The first was even out of the zone.
Maddog - July 21, 2008
Do you have a girlfriend?

Stop.
Consider the dead horse flogged. Beyond all bounds of rationality.

Slim1256 - July 21, 2008
More a Matter of Curiosity
than anything else. Just how does Gameday work. Without sensors between the mound and the plate I’m guessing it must pick up its data from some kind of scanning device. Is it at all like the systems used by the networks to show the accuracy of an umpire’s call which appears to use a computer program that draws data from the cameras? If it is as you say it is, I am very impressed by the technology, not the argument.

I'm making myself look silly?
I suppose that’s easy to do around here since everyone follows you around and believes every word you say, but why don’t you be a man and admit you were wrong? You made an incorrect statement. I challenged it. You had the nerve to act like a 3-year old and say “if I watch the games I’d know this” and now that it’s been proven you can’t even admit you made an incorrect and just plain stupid comment? And then followed it up with more stupid ones?
No, this isn’t personal. This has to do with you writing something that was false and then having the nerve to call out someone who pointed it out to you. If this does anything other than make you look ridiculous, then you need to evaluate the people you’ve surrounded yourself with here.
Maddog - July 21, 2008
You know, it's one thing to make a point
But your responses are so emotionally charged that they hint at a vendetta. Not everyone always agrees with Al - check out yesterday’s summary - I also disagreed with the close call comment and said so.
Even the pics aren’t so bad—but the tone of your posts are a bit much. I think that’s where the feedback you’re getting stems from.
Shanghai Badger - July 21, 2008
Oh, I get it
Maddog, is it that YOU aren’t the one that is “Followed Around” and who has millions hanging on “Every Word YOU Say”?
Could THAT be mebbe a part of this?
I think you need to get over this. Al’s comment was offhand and maybe it was questionable, but you’re making this into serious obsession .. And the insult to Al making him to be some kind of cult leader blindly followed is painfully clear. Dude, zip it while you got any semblance of credibility left ..

Shanghai Badger - July 21, 2008
Wow...
You’ve drug this over to another post from another? Let it go. No one wants to read this whole thread to figure out what you are trying to prove. I’m guessing from a cursory reading that it has to do with Backe’s showing up the ump yesterday. Brenly was right, and so was Al, even if your proof doesn’t show it. Showing up an ump doesn’t exactly endear an opposing pitcher to a home plate ump. Common sense. Backe felt he was squeezed the rest of the game, and he probably was.
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
To be fair, Maddog was actually right in his point. Not that Al's comment needed to
be taken that seriously in the first place, but the rest of you guys are out of place jumping on Maddog, as he did nothing but prove his point.
princefieldersdiet - July 21, 2008
I don't think they're
jumping on Maddog for what he’s saying; it’s all in the way he’s saying it (tone) and how adamant (persistence) he is at making his point.
I’m not getting into this (I mean, jeez!), I’m just sayin’....

Damen Jackson - July 21, 2008
HOW DARE YOU BASE A STATEMENT ON OPINION SIR!!!!!!!
Kinky Reggae - July 21, 2008
Not sure why this is in this particular thread...
but I do agree with you. Umpires are pretty good about letting these tantrums go. I remember the pitch to Ramirez that you reference in this example. Ramirez bent over and laughed at the called strike three for a second or two before walking back to the dugout. The pitch probably could have gone either way (I would have called it a strike), but shows that the ump in that game had moved on.
However, I think too big a deal is being made of this discussion if it is carrying over into a second diary. Al was going a bit overboard in his hyperbole in asking “what umpire is ever going to give Backe a close call from now on,” but you are going a bit overboard in your response.
SouthernCub - July 21, 2008
You're right.
Yes, what I wrote was hyperbole. To have brought it up to this degree is… well, I find it a bit strange.
Al Yellon - July 21, 2008

JW Blue still my favorite, hence the bleded comment. Damn pricey, though.
Shanghai Badger - July 21, 2008
Yeah, Fiddich is good.
For blended: JW Blue is great. Pricey is right. Try the Glen Livet or the 12 year MaCallan. Both are great. Out of either Glen Fiddich or Glen Livet, I think Livet is better, if you can give it a try. Most bars have it. There is nothing like a good single malt with a twist. Great taste, great feeling.

Haha...
my niece showed it to me last night. “Uncle Bump, look….Theriot only has 386 friends, and I have over 1,000”... Of course, I had to reply with, “Yes, little one, but I bet all of his friends are scrappy”.

imho, i am more worried about his fielding. It was quite a circus out there last time.
Fishbone2 - July 21, 2008
Yeah, let's hope he's still not opposed...
...to letting RJ come in and play left for the last couple innings.
daver - July 21, 2008
when was he oppsed
to begin with?
drewishdrewid - July 21, 2008
Well, it seemed like...
...Lou was a little hesitant to take him out for a defensive replacement when Soriano came off the DL the first time. And it also seemed like, over time, Lou was able to cajole him into accepting the idea.
Obviously, I have no insider knowledge of what actually happened, but I got the impression Soriano didn’t want to leave games early for defensive purposes but eventually came to accept it.
daver - July 21, 2008
ok.
fair enough. I figure Lou does what he thinks he needs to do, and left Sori in when he though he should.
drewishdrewid - July 21, 2008
A lot of tension above,
let’s start his series out right with a nice performance from Harden.
I have playoffs for softball tonight so the late start could actually help me out, now all I have to do is stay up late to catch most of the game.

Ticket question
I know there has been several Fanposts on this topic already, but I wanted to ask some you all some questions about buying tickets.
I have a work trip to Chicago coming up next week and was planning on catching the Saturday game vs. the Pirates. I was hoping to buy a single bleacher ticket. Stubhub has them around $100 and Craigslist isn’t much better. Should I just try to find something cheap on one of these sites or is there another route? I tried the ticket exchange here, but no offers so far.
How about day-of ticket releases? Its a 12:05 start, when would go on sale and when would I have to get in line? Should I just try and buy one off a scalper before hand? I realize I could wait until after the game starts, but I would like to get in early if possible. Any other advice?
Dome is my home-ay - July 21, 2008
Day of Game tickets
are now sold starting a few hours before the game, and you have to enter the stadium directly. It may be the best way, cash-wise.
I got two bleacher seats for the homegame last sunday for about a 35% markup, on Craigslist. Not terrible, not great either.
drewishdrewid - July 21, 2008
I'm willing to pay
anywhere around $70, which I have done in the past. The $120 prices on Craigslist seemed a bit jawdropping. Will prices dip on Craigslist in the next week?
For day of game tickets, how early do I need to show up? Thanks.
Dome is my home-ay - July 21, 2008
I think they sell
Day of Game 1 hour before the gates open. You have to wait in the little corral. This is a brand-new policy; Doggie Stalker wrote a fan-post about it maybe two weeks ago.
I paid $130 for two tickets. Go into each craigs-list post, sometimes the headlines for the adverts are misleading.
Also, you can try the BCB ticket-exchange, links to which are on the right-hand-bar down the page, and are face-value only, per Al.
drewishdrewid - July 21, 2008
The day of game sale...
... at the ticket window now is a MUCH better deal, because requiring you to go in after purchase keeps the scalpers away. Several people here got good tix an hour to game time.
Al Yellon - July 21, 2008
Thanks for the help
I think maybe I’ll try the day of game corral if nothing gets cheap on craigslist. I’m guessing I should show an hour before the selling time?
The BCB exchange seems to be hit and miss. I have a post up right now, no takers thus far.

Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
I thought the whole point
of the rehab start was to see if he could field?
Can he go back and forth? He can’t, can he?
drewishdrewid - July 21, 2008
I think once he is up here, he is up here for good unless they put him on the DL again.
I think they pulled him to start tonight, just my uninformed Soriano loving opinion.
nji232 - July 21, 2008
that would make this the shortest rehab
...assignment in history and virtually pointless, but it certainly wouldnt surprise me.
I would hope he plays one or two more games, it will only help IMO…
JB 23 - July 21, 2008
I agree that he needs at least one game in the field.
I’m not worried about his batting when he returns bc that is what it is. I just don’t want him to come back and field like he did that Friday in STL.
nji232 - July 21, 2008
Would really like to see him field some balls in the outfield for that very reason...
...and you have to remember its been almost 45 days, I would think one or two games getting used to the lights and handling in-game situations would be easier in the minor leagues….

Last time, I really felt he used the Big League club as his minor league rehab.
Fishbone2 - July 21, 2008
Agreed, but if Lou, Hendry, and Soriano all think he is ready to go then thats what is gonna happen.
nji232 - July 21, 2008
think his legs will look more rested or recovered?
before the wrist injury we could still see him holding up or not legging out runs like he used to. Like he was holding back.
maddux1-27-07 - July 21, 2008
I hope he will be confindent in his legs bc those last two or three games before the HBP he was really running well.
Hopefully they are fresh and ready to go the last 10 weeks of the season.
nji232 - July 21, 2008
that was earlier
the few weeks before his hand, he was really extending. Even caught a few fly balls on the run. No hop.
drewishdrewid - July 21, 2008
And stole some bases...
I’d have to believe that the legs are as healthy as they’re going to get at this point. He was running pretty well before the injury, and has had several weeks to rest and train since then.
SouthernCub - July 21, 2008
Not necessarily pointless...
if the only point was to test his hand against live pitching, then getting three AB could show whether or not he could do it.
SouthernCub - July 21, 2008
They didn't want to send him on a rehab assignment,
and Fonzie didn’t really want to go either. With the good batting practice and field work on Sat. & Sun.; apparently he and the team must feel he’s ready to go. Why put him at AAA? He’ll get his stroke by being in the ML line-up. A guy like Fonzie, it shouldn’t take long.
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
Agreed.
Al Yellon - July 21, 2008
I would assume...
that since the injury was to his hand, the rehab stint was done to prove he could handle the physical stress of swinging at live pitching, not to get his timing in the field.
SouthernCub - July 21, 2008
Well
he proved he can watch the ball go by.
El Borto - July 21, 2008

nji232 - July 21, 2008
It's only about 30 miles, (25.9 to be exact).
With traffic, should only take about an hour to get there. .. He might be there already…
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
Ha ha...yeah I just took my own advice...
...and was messing around with Google maps myself. From Fitch Park to Chase Field, it estimates the travel time at “about 27 minutes.” He’s there.
daver - July 21, 2008
I think they played at the Pads facility in Peoria.
Both locations are probably really close to each other.
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
Oh, right. It was in Peoria.
I heard that yesterday. Anyhoo, yeah, same difference. I’m totally expecting Soriano to be in the lineup tonight.
daver - July 21, 2008
I'm expecting it as well...
I think it will give a big lift to the whole team.
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
I think you are correct.
sue369 - July 21, 2008
Has this been made official?
From what I have seen Lou said there was about a 25% chance of this scenario happening.
Fishbone2 - July 21, 2008
Not official.
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
Not official yet...
just strong speculation, based on the fact that he was pulled from the rehab game after only three AB in the 6th…
SouthernCub - July 21, 2008
They probably pulled him because of this per trib:
The Cubs are almost as concerned about Soriano’s legs in the extreme heat as they are about his healed left hand. They don’t want him overdoing it Monday morning in a rookie league game against San Diego and possibly pulling a hamstring.
Fishbone2 - July 21, 2008
I think if you put the hints together it makes sense.
Lou hints at it last night, Soriano obviously doesn’t want to rehab, the team could use a lift, Soriano leaves the rehab game early.
nji232 - July 21, 2008
Wouldn't read too much into it... Again Per Trib:
Soriano will get three or four at-bats in the morning. He said he was somewhat concerned about the pitchers he’d be facing.
“I have to be careful because I’m facing rookies with no experience, and I know they’re going to be throwing as hard as they can to get it by me,” he said.
Fishbone2 - July 21, 2008
That quote just adds to the notion that he doesn't want to do the rehab.
Just my opinon. I have zero insight.
nji232 - July 21, 2008
huh?
I think it means he doesn’t want to get hit by a young, wild pitcher trying to make an impression.
drewishdrewid - July 21, 2008
He talks about his uneasiness around the young rookie pitchers
How is that not hinting at not wanting to be there?
nji232 - July 21, 2008
I think it means exactly what Drewish said
Doesn’t want to get plunked by some guy who’s all amped up, trying to throw as hard as he can and looses his control of the strike zone in the process.
Fishbone2 - July 21, 2008
If he doesn't want to face the young pitchers that means he doesn't want to be there.
I’m not faulting him at all for being afraid of some young kid going Ankiel all over the place. I’m saying that quote clearly states that he doesn’t want to face rookie league pitchers, thus doesn’t want to be in a rookie league game.
nji232 - July 21, 2008
What major leaguer would?
But what he wants and what the TEAM wants is 2 different things.
Fishbone2 - July 21, 2008
I think you're reading more into it
than there is.
He doesn’t want to get hit.
drewishdrewid - July 21, 2008
Another hint
I think I read that the Cubs were facing three lefties in the next four games.
JohnM - July 21, 2008
Which also said this:
Soriano is tentatively scheduled to play for Triple-A Iowa at Tucson on Tuesday night, though storms are predicted for the Tucson area. At the very least, he should be back by Wednesday against Arizona left-hander Doug Davis.
Fishbone2 - July 21, 2008
I would rather him
Cut his teeth against a weak hitting DBack club than a power hitting Marlins Club. You can afford for him to be less than stellar but get some real game experience with better pitchers that should prep him for the next series and most importantly the brewers series.
Really is one game at AAA going to make that much of difference. I would prefer him to have a week of rehab but they are not going to do that anyway.
TheRiot Police - July 21, 2008
Good Point
I would like to see a week rehab too. Instead of having to cringe every time a ball was hit to him.
Fishbone2 - July 21, 2008
I think that even with a week of
rehab, all of us would be cringing when a tough one was hit to left field. Fonzie isn’t going to make great strides on defense by spending a week in minor-league rehab. If he’s physically ready to go, then there really is no question; you play him as soon as possible. As soon as possible would be tonight.
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
You remember...
how lost he was out there on even routine flys. After a few games he started making the routine catches. He’s never going to be a gold glover but a game or two to get your feet back would help with the ROUTINE flys…
Fishbone2 - July 21, 2008
I remember...
He’s been taking fielding for at least 3-4 days though. He’ll be alright. I know the team needs his bat.
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
No doubt they need his bat...
He still almost leads the team in dingers and hasn’t played in 2 months.
Fishbone2 - July 21, 2008
He usually comes back
On Fire. So, if he’s there & activated; then I’m looking forward to seeing him in Cubbie blue tonight.
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
question is
what kept him from making those plays. His legs? His hand? His brain?
If it was his legs, then it’s possible he doesn’t need the extra rehab here, because his legs should be as good as they were.
drewishdrewid - July 21, 2008
I would have to agree with you...
Considering the upcoming schedule. I’m guessing they don’t want him to come back and struggle right away at home. So cutting his teeth vs. the D’bags sounds about right. Then at home vs. the Marlins before the series vs. the BrewCrew.
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
Yes, that is also a reasonable possibility...
Both are solid possibilities. Hence, it is all speculation at this point.

Sorting out the recycling is not part of the foreplay...
...but it is very important.

well played
Shanghai Badger - July 21, 2008
Who does the Score and ESPN
have reporting from Chase Field. If Soriano is spotted at Chase Field before game time, that probably means he’s back, otherwise he’d be with the Iowa Cubs in Tucson.
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
I don't think they send people out on the road usually.
nji232 - July 21, 2008
Soriano was meeting up with the team tonight regardless...
so the trainers and Lou can all talk.
Fishbone2 - July 21, 2008
If he says he is ready to go, and the trainers have no objections I have a hard time seeing Lou telling him no.
nji232 - July 21, 2008
That's right...
I still think he’ll be back tonight.
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
You may be right...
But the newspapers’ will probably have somebody there.
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
The Score rarely sends people on the road.
Check Gordon Wittenmeyer’s Twitter page.
gary varsho - July 21, 2008
How do I get there my philosophical friend?
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
It's all
right here, but there’s no update for tonight’s game yet.
gary varsho - July 21, 2008
John Danks you very much.
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
Actually it's Vasquez tonight
to the great Hammer (or measly Ed Farmer…ugh) “Light Em Up.” I’ll be there tonight, club level (can’t pass up free tix), expressing my indifference for both teams. However, I wouldn’t mind watching a Josh Hamilton show similar to the HR Derby.

Wish I had a window they fit.

I'll take the Rockport please.

prefers the Naghead.
OOOOOH! SNAP!
drewishdrewid - July 21, 2008
Eh hem....
That’s Crawdad, M.D. He’s the real thing just like Doogie Howser.
Jayo525 - July 21, 2008
LOL!
sue369 - July 21, 2008
Hmmm
Speaking of Hammer and Doogie Howser, did anyone see Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog this weekend?
Jayo525 - July 21, 2008
I loved it.
drewishdrewid - July 21, 2008
My boss is going to the Sox game tonight as well.
Then tomorrow night he’ll be at Busch for the STL vs MIL game. I’ve given instructions to wear Cub blue.
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
It's four hours till game time
The beat writers probably haven’t had their pre-game “Lou time” yet.
JohnM - July 21, 2008
Maybe Lou will be mysteriously MIA again...
PurpleLineToWrigley - July 21, 2008
I'm jonseing
for a game thread.
drewishdrewid - July 21, 2008
You and I both sir.
Jimmyeatworld - July 21, 2008
As am I
but I have to sit through Ozzie ball at U.S. Comiskular tonight. I will be keeping my eye on the scoreboard though, and the first chance I get I’m Red Lining it back up north to catch the end of Harden’s No-No.
Jayo525 - July 21, 2008
Seems like a lot of us are
JohnM - July 21, 2008
Anyone going to the game tonight?
Great timing I’m here on business this week and going to all three game .
Bleacher tickets only 20 bucks here , anyone else in town?
alabebo - July 21, 2008
I will sitting on the 3rd base side tomorrow
down towards left field in section 134.
BigJohnAZ - July 21, 2008
We love having
reports from people who are lucky enough to go to the games. Would you report back to us after the game? Hope you get to see three Cub wins.
sue369 - July 21, 2008
I threw this out there yesterday but nobody bit....
Fukudome’s two hits yesterday were great to see, but I’m curious…does Perry have any clue on tweaks or suggestions to make to him considering he has such a unique approach and swing?
Hagen - July 21, 2008
I hope he has a suggestion
on how not to fall 4 feet away from every single low and away pitch.
Brett Taylor - July 21, 2008
I would not mind if
the Brewers and Cards play 28 innings tonight. Gametime temp 95
