I think it’s too early for this guy to be up too, but its based on our needs. We are going to need to do something about our bullpen, and Jeff isn’t going to be the guy to do it… this year
the Shark needs to get his breaking ball over the plate
with consistency. He will be back in Iowa to do that. But will a short stint up here do him a world of good to see that? We needed an arm here for 4-5 days until Woody is back.
Because everybody else has been so consistent this year. Dude, give him some time to adjust to the looooong season over here. He’s helping us. He just needs to acclimate.
His stats in Japan appeared to be more similar to that of a ~.810-.820 OPS guy in MLB when you consider the stats of guys like the Matsuis and Ichiro. Right now, he’s at .787 OPS, so I’d expect better next year. But I wouldn’t expect a .900 OPS from him.
I’m just saying that people were expecting a big power .900 OPS guy. Compared to the Matsuis and Ichiro, I thought that was unrealistic. That’s all.
I’m not dissing Fukudome. I’m not writing him off. I’m just saying that I think some people overrated him before the season expecting big power. I think that in reality he’ll wind up somewhere between what he is right now and what people thought before the season.
He has been playing in a different part of the world all through his life and is going through an adjustment period. Fukudome has enough baseball smarts to figure what has been going wrong with him and will only comeback strong next year.
my point isn't that he is superior, I said from the beginning (above) that he is
just here for 4-5 days to get a taste of the majors and he needs to work on getting his breaking balls over consistently. But to say “he stinks” was just silly and wrong. One inning, your first in a tight game is not the full body of work in which to judge a guy.
I agree the second inning is not the full body of work either, but it is probably a better showing of his true “body of work.” But to write him off as “he stinks” based on the 7th seemed foolish to me.
What the hell is wrong with Howry? Why is Daryl Ward making $1.2 million to hit .250 and strike out with the bases juiced? What the hell is up with double digit LOB???
to get them on in the first place is what they need to do in order to get them in. Keep making with the walks and hits…stop putting “the game is in my hands” pressure on yourselves!
but come on Howry, what the hell are you doing out there! If it weren’t for a great play by DeRosa last night we are looking at another loss due to Howry last night. Howry just seems like his days of dominance is over..
In this instance, Howry probably does need to be moved.
Whether that is to another team or to Iowa or to retirement, he needs to go. There’s less than a half season of a 3 year deal left to eat, and they’re going to have to pay him that whether he’s blowing games or sitting at home eating chips.
I just accepted a full time job offer from a well-established printing company in the OC. Good pay, benefits, and the company itself is a long established (read: wealthy) firm. Even better news is that I’ll be around here less during the day. :-p
Cwyers around here? I wonder if the Cubs WGN record is statistically different from their CSN/ESPN record. My guess is yes, but I cannot imagine a reason for it to be so.
Cubs are 3-5 since the ASB—not great, but not flat-out awful, either. Unless the Cubs went 7-1, there’s no way they would have kept up with the Brewers, who are 7-0.
I’ll talk! In third grade, I cheated on my history exam. In fourth grade, I stole my uncle Max’s toupee and I glued it on my face when I was Moses in my Hebrew School play. In fifth grade, I knocked my sister Edie down the stairs and I blamed it on the dog…When my mom sent me to the summer camp for fat kids and then they served lunch I got nuts and I pigged out and they kicked me out…But the worst thing I ever done - I mixed a pot of fake puke at home and then I went to this movie theater, hid the puke in my jacket, climbed up to the balcony and then, t-t-then, I made a noise like this: hua-hua-hua-huaaaaaaa - and then I dumped it over the side, all over the people in the audience. And then, this was horrible, all the people started getting sick and throwing up all over each other. I never felt so bad in my entire life.
Since the ASG, we are getting basically nothing out of DLee, ARam and Kosuke. This can not continue. As long as the Suds are hitting on all cylinders and we are getting no hitting from these three our little problems are magnified.
Let’s just hope our bats wake up soon. This hitting/power outage from these three guys is really letting a lot of good pitching efforts go from Ws and turn them into Ls.
Lou will take care of these “hiccups.” We’ve got a long season. I like the fact were in first and not playing from 8 games behind. We’ve got the chips in place.
I will continue to flag you until Al tells me to stop. He is the one that said he wanted your kind of garbage to stop, so if he doesn’t mind your juvenile nonsense, then ok.
All I said is that I don’t see Wandy Rodriguez (and others) beating the Brewers tonight. I wouldn’t drop dead in shock if it happened, because it could, but if I still bet on baseball, I’d take the Brewers. I hope I’m wrong, and Rodriguez pitches a no-hitter.
How that got transformed into giving the Brewers the division is beyond me.
in Fantasy Leagues who doesn’t have a clue. The Padres of the Fantasy World, so to speak.
In real life, that team would like to unload some of their crap - butr nobody wants any of them. Look how little they took for Randy Wolf. They’d unload Greene, Kouzmanoff - but no takers….anywhere.
I really don’t think the Cubs are missing much. Maybe one more BP arm (which they might already have), maybe one more bench guy. The pieces are in place. It’s up to the players to do their jobs.
The problem lately is that the middle of the order hasn’t been producing the way it should. As I wrote earlier, they have been showing signs of snapping out of it until today. Once they start hitting again, the Cubs should be OK.
Like the Cubs trading for a STARTER ( Burnett) who may or may not want you to keep him for the next 2 years for 12 million per ( but only if he sucks). You always propose the same Cub players you claim suck and and act as if no other teams with SIGNIFICANTLY more to offer might be wanting the same players. Look we blew are wad getting Harden for you so be happy.
That is not the wad. We have Pie, Colvin, Ceda, etc… to play with. This team is riddled with large back end contracts so the time to win is now!
I know Burnett to the pen is crazy but I’m just thinking outside of the box. Plus I really don’t want to talk about the typical BS rent a pitcher pen guys because all of them suck.
Yep 2AA Guys one very good Young pitcher and bench guy
For one guy with “FILTHY stuff who can HOPEFULLY go six innings IF he can start every 5th day I was honestly a fair trade. I suggest you check out mlbtraderumors.com where guys who actually know ( well most of them) discuss what is actually going on and not Pie, Colvin and Ceda for Halliday or whatever the odd idea is this week. Oh and what are the Yankees, Mets, Marlins Brewers, Cardinals, Phillies, Red Sox Braves and nearly every team in the race looking for , why BULLPEN help either set up or closer. Most will have to live with what they have ( but damn those D’backs for getting Rausch for so little) because prices are high and demand is higher.
I take back every mean thing I ever said about Ned Colletti. Please Ned get MADDUX out of there. Schmits is NEVER coming back and Penny probably ain’t either. Kernshow is NOT reliable and the Stuilts guy (sic) is done. You need another reliable starter.
Goin to my third showing of The Dark Knight tonight, which will be my first time on IMAX. I’ve been told it is drastically different, maybe I’ll throw up a review with comparisons later tonight.
may be overpaying for their current record, but they are in the race and have infused young talent into their line-up. The Dodgers have talent in their system. The Padres—have nothing.
If this team was scoring runs as it was earlier we wouldn’t be having this discussion. The pen LOOKS worse than it actually is, because there’s no margin for error any more.
Although teams are batting over .300 against Howry. That’s a problem
We lost a tough one today, and everybody feels bad, but we have a whole two months to go. I’ve seen some pretty amazing stuff happen as a fan so let’s not lose hope…and please let’s not take it out on each other.
frankly, I thought “Illionishimey” was banned. NBF provokes arguments simply because he thinks his view of things is the only view. NBF is nothing more than a hack who thinks he knows more than he does.
....I don’t condone NBF’s comments because he was baited and obviously took the bait. But comparing the two’s comments, I’d argue that Himey’s way were way more out of line. But, hey, that’s just my humble opinion.
Was just on WGN radio with Steve Cochrane. Said that the same thing about the wish for a Bobby Howry blister. He loved it, unlike the sensitive types on this site.
Cubs’ offense has been as good as the opposing pitching has been bad. If a guy like Randy Johnson or Brian Moehler is on their game, we don’t score. But if said guy starts scuffling, we cash ‘em in.
Need to find a way to win games when we go up against a Sabathia or a journeyman who happens to have it going that particular night. A tighter bullpen would help – more Shark, less Howry, maybe a Fuentes or a Street. And a better PH option than Ward. Of course, the option of spelling a tired Dome or a slumping Lee would go a long way to sustaining the offensive output as well, so maybe Hendry trades for another hitter.
I would have like to have seen Marshall in that Spot in the 9th
The fact that you had the top of your order up the next half inning Lou did not need to double switch and could have pitched him a couple of innings if needed. It is just irresponsible to throw the same guy out three days in a row especially when he has been struggling like that.
Still…the offense has to become more consistent..period. We should have won all of these games after the ASB. The pitching has been outstanding. Just have to hope that when we finally do get hot with the bats that the pitching does not go south
All of those were winnable games (9-2 game did not get out of hand till late when Lou let hart take one on the chin) if our offense was more consistent. I understand that you can’t win them all, but it sucks to give up 5 games when the pitching has been solid.
Everyone is so down on Howry, but the fact of the matter is he has been overused lately. What does Lou have against Marshall? He did great a few weeks back. I too would have used him in the ninth.
Probably so...but it would have come at the expense of ARAM or Dome or Soto
Because the pitcher’s spot could have come up in 10th and Lou would have been forced to double switch Dero or Blanco to protect Marshall for a couple of innings. I would have done Marshall 9 and 10, gaudin 11, 12, and then after that it is a crap shoot.
Howry should have been a last resort since he had already pitched two days in a row and I believe that he threw over 30 pitches in the AZ appearance
Writing this down is therapuetic for me since I go into a funk after a tough loss. Thanks for induldging me.
First the Negatives:
1. Bob Howry is bad. We don’t really have many other options but he is not the solution; 2. DLee is a shell of his former self offensively. I don’t like him in the 3 hole. It seems the best I can hope for in a clutch situation is a walk. Not a good feeling from your number 3.
3. Marmol is tired. I don’t care what bull people say about him needing to pitch more to stay sharp. He needs rest. 4. Ryan Theriot should NEVER attempt to steal a base. I am one of those who like him but base stealing is something he is unable to master. 5. Last year Ward hit better when he pinch hit versus starting. I think the opposite is true this year. I would like to seem him at first once in a while to get more at bats.
The Good:
1. Reed Johnson is my new favorite player. I just love everything he brings to the game. 2. Ryan Dempster is a gamer. He did not have his best stuff today, yet he battled to put us in a position to win. 3. The Shark looked good. I thought he did great considering the circumstances. I think he will do well. 4. As frustrating as Wood can be at times, we need him. Kerry, I promise I won’t be so hard on you the next time you have a bad outing.
DLee this year is sort of like Sammy was in 2004. After a while it became apparent that he needed to be moved down in the order, so maybe we’ll see that with Derrek in the coming weeks.
There is a lot to like about this kid. All in all, he was pretty posed, although the pitch-out showed that he still has a Nuke LaLoosh kink or two to iron out.
His fastball was sweet. 95-98 miles an hour, with a little snap at the end that was putting it right on the outside corner to righties. Unfortunately, he does need another pitch that he can get over the plate. Cantu got to him because he was consistently putting the fastball in the same place, and he needed an out pitch. I think that he shook off Soto on that one. It is good to have confidence in your fastball, and he would have gotten a lot of major league hitters out with what he was offering, but the Fish have some good hitters.
While he gave up a run in two innings, in the main I liked what I saw out of him. There were some jitters but he didn’t completely implode out there today. The tailing fastball looked pretty dang nasty at times.
Congrats to Jeff
on his FIRST strikeout

that pitchout cost him the run I think

I think BB nailed it on the head when he said..

I understand...
...not wanting to pitch to Ramirez, but it’s not like the remainder of the lineup will be much less dangerous.
arioso - July 25, 2008
it is when Dome swings like that
bizzle4 - July 25, 2008
Former Cub farmhand Pinto in the game.
I hated that we gave away him and Nolasco.
Unique - July 25, 2008
FOR PIERRE!
...ugh…
IowaCubs- - July 25, 2008
JUAN PIERRE BEST PLAYER EVER?!?!??!
Canseco's Roid Party - July 25, 2008
Why Pinto...WHY NOT
JCD - July 25, 2008
TMI Moment
I still get hot ‘n’ bothered whenever I see Mrs. Wormer in her corset and fishnets.
CaliCub - July 25, 2008
and florida catcher right now...Hoover
JCD - July 25, 2008
dumbest trade Hendry ever made
Itchy - July 25, 2008
He gets a pass on that one for the Aramis trade...
I think that more than made up for it.
IowaCubs- - July 25, 2008
come on Dome
Zakh - July 25, 2008
base hit lets go now
bizzle4 - July 25, 2008
Base hit gets us two runs now
nji232 - July 25, 2008
Wild Pitch
Zakh - July 25, 2008
Passed Ball
CaliCub - July 25, 2008
we need a single !!!!!
parrotinct - July 25, 2008
passed ball
Zakh - July 25, 2008
That was sooooooooooo close
nji232 - July 25, 2008
DOME
almost… just get a hit now…
drewishdrewid - July 25, 2008
Woohoo!
Dome gettin’ the patience back.
arioso - July 25, 2008
Good to see.
neverAcquiesce - July 25, 2008
Big pitch
game
Ivy Walls - July 25, 2008
What?
SouthernCub - July 25, 2008
DAMMIT!
drewishdrewid - July 25, 2008
why did he not run?????
bizzle4 - July 25, 2008
Santo is dying up there
Itchy - July 25, 2008
How was that not a foul tip?
nji232 - July 25, 2008
Run you idiot
parrotinct - July 25, 2008
He never runs on those
BigJohnAZ - July 25, 2008
because it wouldn't matter anyway.
Jimmyeatworld - July 25, 2008
Ramirez would get berated for that...
I agree though – it rarely ever matters.
SouthernCub - July 25, 2008
don't say that to
AJ P in the playoffs vs the Angels (IIRC)
tony412 - July 25, 2008
Which is why I said rarely
SouthernCub - July 25, 2008
Everybody wants him to screw up his legs again...
running out something that ultimately doesn’t matter anyway…
Jimmyeatworld - July 25, 2008
Yes, he would
Ramirez would get blasted for “doggin” it, if that were him.
BMoney79 - July 25, 2008
ugly swing for Dome
Emelie - July 25, 2008
Good effort.
gocubs40 - July 25, 2008
He's becoming my least favorite Cub
Itchy - July 25, 2008
Scratchy used to be mine
IowaCubs- - July 25, 2008
Bah!
Because everybody else has been so consistent this year.
Dude, give him some time to adjust to the looooong season over here. He’s helping us. He just needs to acclimate.
arioso - July 25, 2008
OK. I just hate that spinning hack
that he’s been taking lately. He really needed to make contact in that spot.
Itchy - July 25, 2008
True dat.
arioso - July 25, 2008
He looks like he's never ready for the pitch slightly inside
a pitch he should be turning on and driving. He takes those pitches and is almost exclusively looking to go the other way, IMO.
BigJohnAZ - July 25, 2008
In The Offseason
I would love to see Gerald Perry refine Dome’s Bail ‘n’ Flail approach at the plate.
CaliCub - July 25, 2008
Time for more Shark.
Cubs will have to get him his first win today.
Jimmyeatworld - July 25, 2008
Ugggh
This could be ugly…
Lou In Blue - July 25, 2008
is he going back for the 8th?
Canseco's Roid Party - July 25, 2008
Sigh
gocubs40 - July 25, 2008
yes
drewishdrewid - July 25, 2008
Yes.
Jimmyeatworld - July 25, 2008
honest opinion on Dome...
he is good but i think he has been way over rated this season. he has tired out lately and to being that player in the beginging of the season
bizzle4 - July 25, 2008
He doesn't hit that opening day homer
We would treat him like a lot of peple treat Soriano
nji232 - July 25, 2008
exactly
bizzle4 - July 25, 2008
Let's Get Another OF At the Deadline
to help spell Dome.
CaliCub - July 25, 2008
or call up
Pie
drewishdrewid - July 25, 2008
I think Pie is insurance or trade bait
this is a team that is built to win now….not 2 years from now and anyone coming up must be a ROY candidate or find a role to contribute like Fonty…
the thing is who do you send down Fonty, Cedeno?
What you want is another DeRosa
Ivy Walls - July 25, 2008
Hard to read, that was.
dtpollitt - July 25, 2008
sorry thought it in my head and didnt type
he has been no where near the player he was in the begining of the season
bizzle4 - July 25, 2008
He's exhausted.
He’s not used to the travel; Japan is the size of Indiana.
He needs to be platooned.
Matt Allison - July 25, 2008
I think he was overrated before the season...
and the first month only added fuel to the fire.
That said, I still think he’s a very solid player. Probably overpaid, but the expectations were probably too high.
SouthernCub - July 25, 2008
I think he needs this year to adjust
and he will play up to his ability next year
Emelie - July 25, 2008
I think so too.
He’s had to make some huge adjustments so far this season.
sue369 - July 25, 2008
Ditto
lots of travel and away from home. Way WAY away from home.
BigJohnAZ - July 25, 2008
The question is "what is his true ability?"
SouthernCub - July 25, 2008
he's a ROOKIE.
let’s give him a year, eh?
drewishdrewid - July 25, 2008
Exactamundo drewish.
Jimmyeatworld - July 25, 2008
I'm more than willing to give him time..
SouthernCub - July 25, 2008
I don't think he was "overrated" per se
He has been playing in a different part of the world all through his life and is going through an adjustment period. Fukudome has enough baseball smarts to figure what has been going wrong with him and will only comeback strong next year.
cubsnlinux - July 25, 2008
I agree he'll be better next year...
I just don’t think he’ll be as good as many people thought before the season started (and in April).
SouthernCub - July 25, 2008
who exactly are those "people"
cubsnlinux - July 25, 2008
I don't think the informed thought that we are getting the Japanese version of ARod to play RF
cubsnlinux - July 25, 2008
Its all good, seems like the bottom of the order is doing it all today
expect a cedeno go ahead double
xene - July 25, 2008
Shark
throwing offspeed pitches now.
drewishdrewid - July 25, 2008
ha, 3 straight. let's work on the mixing it up a bit buddy...
Canseco's Roid Party - July 25, 2008
Might be listening to Geo?
Seems like a good plan.
arioso - July 25, 2008
8 hits, 5 walks, and 2 solo home runs.....2 runs-= not so good with RISP
Zakh - July 25, 2008
Starts him off with sliders
Nice change
Lou In Blue - July 25, 2008
Variety...
The spice of life – er – pitching.
arioso - July 25, 2008
1,2,3 inning for the Shark!
drewishdrewid - July 25, 2008
And a quickie
tony412 - July 25, 2008
twss
tootle - July 25, 2008
TWSS
drewishdrewid - July 25, 2008
Much better second inning
Now lets get him some runs
nji232 - July 25, 2008
1-2-3
nice!!!
bizzle4 - July 25, 2008
K
Zakh - July 25, 2008
Awesome.
This is a huge game today simply because of this kid’s pitching future.
Matt Allison - July 25, 2008
Shark will probably go the rest of the way...
Time to get him some runs, so he can get the win.
Jimmyeatworld - July 25, 2008
Way to go SPUNKY!
IowaCubs- - July 25, 2008
Is Spunky your dog?
sue369 - July 25, 2008
Santo's my dog...
IowaCubs- - July 25, 2008
Who is this SPUNKY, to which you refer??
BMoney79 - July 25, 2008
If we don't score, might as well bring him out for another, eh?
Zakh - July 25, 2008
I think it's time to put the Junk Spunk in the Trunk
IowaCubs- - July 25, 2008
Good job.
He “pitched” like a top prospect in that frame.
Unique - July 25, 2008
Good job Jeff
Pitching vs. Throwing as Len remarked
BlueSox - July 25, 2008
He probably settled down from the adrenaline rush
BigJohnAZ - July 25, 2008
Yep
You’d have to be dead not get your adrenaline pumping with the fans on their feet at Wrigley for your major league debut.
BlueSox - July 25, 2008
Cody Ross...
...has a funny pic on GameDay.
jdb-44 - July 25, 2008
same in yahoo....shit eating cheesy smile?
Zakh - July 25, 2008
The Shark looked very good in the 8th.
even breaking balls were over.
Does Mr “He Stinks” the deodorant salesman, want to rethink that statement?
LAcarl519 - July 25, 2008
If you're gonna go after the guy
for overreacting to one mediocre inning, you can’t use one good inning as evidence or superiority.
Or you can, whatever.
Gibbon Jockey - July 25, 2008
my point isn't that he is superior, I said from the beginning (above) that he is
just here for 4-5 days to get a taste of the majors and he needs to work on getting his breaking balls over consistently.
LAcarl519 - July 25, 2008
Shark - The Anti-Valverde...
ballhawk - July 25, 2008
Attaboy!
arioso - July 25, 2008
Go Geo!
TyCubsfan - July 25, 2008
Cmon, Soto
drewishdrewid - July 25, 2008
Soto flies out
Cedeno PH for LBR
drewishdrewid - July 25, 2008
He just missed that one...
It’d be nice to see onedec here.
Jimmyeatworld - July 25, 2008
Just got under that..
cubsnlinux - July 25, 2008
come on 1dec
cubsnlinux - July 25, 2008
This game screams 14 inning struggle
nji232 - July 25, 2008
That would mean Shark for another inning and Gaudin for 3. Ugh.
Goat Whisperer - July 25, 2008
please, no
there’s no BULLPEN…
drewishdrewid - July 25, 2008
And a 5 or 6 inning starter is going tomorrow
nji232 - July 25, 2008
I predict a game winning HR
by Alfonso Soriano. :-)
Unique - July 25, 2008
That would get my vote.
sue369 - July 25, 2008
A guess hack game winner
nji232 - July 25, 2008
An appearance by Onedec perhaps?
TyCubsfan - July 25, 2008
you asked for it and you got it
cubsnlinux - July 25, 2008
Wouldn't that be nice?
BigJohnAZ - July 25, 2008

Lou In Blue - July 25, 2008
Oh wait, Miller is a righty.
gocubs40 - July 25, 2008
no, RJ sacrifices and PH for Samardz with Edmonds.....walk and face Soriano or pittch to Jimbo
Ivy Walls - July 25, 2008
I don't think Edmonds can play today
nji232 - July 25, 2008
DeRosa might as well come into the game.
cwyers - July 25, 2008
he's got his batting gloves on
Emelie - July 25, 2008
Nice BH, Ronny!
arioso - July 25, 2008

neverAcquiesce - July 25, 2008
stolen base, and a base hit please
RIOTSHIRTS.com - July 25, 2008
Here we go Reed.
No way Shark hits if it comes to that right? Prolly be Gaudin in the 9th then I guess.
TyCubsfan - July 25, 2008
Maybe if it comes to that. Let's hope it doesn't.
Jimmyeatworld - July 25, 2008
I seriously doubt Lou plans on letting Samardzija hit...
...if he didn’t even plan on letting Fontenot hit.
cwyers - July 25, 2008
not so sure how much hitting he did in AAA. i think they play with DH in AL games.
have no clue for AA
Zakh - July 25, 2008
Lou says
he’s going to use Marmol to close, if necessary.
drewishdrewid - July 25, 2008
cmon, Reed!
drewishdrewid - July 25, 2008
We're
gonna see every guy in the Marlins BP.
Matt Allison - July 25, 2008

nji232 - July 25, 2008
Marmol and Howry

Knee problem.
Precautionary. Nothing to worry about.
neverAcquiesce - July 25, 2008

I was thinking it but I didnt want to say it
I would have zero problem with that
nji232 - July 25, 2008

IowaCubs- - July 25, 2008

I'm just mad

We do bat again
Jayo525 - July 25, 2008
I say don't DFA yet...
But how can Lou have confidence to put him in when the pressure’s on?!

damn it Sheffield HR 3-2 marlins
Emelie - July 25, 2008
Howry has nothing ..had nothing from a looooooooong time
cubsnlinux - July 25, 2008
Howry should only be used if we are up or down 10, he is useless
CubsBall2202 - July 25, 2008

I used to sit on the front row and blow smoke to these guys….

Lou In Blue - July 25, 2008
Ummm...
No it isn’t.
Jimmyeatworld - July 25, 2008
No, it isn't
Still two-thirds of an inning left, plus half of another one.
You do know they play nine innings, correct?
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
You do know the Cubs have left 12 men on right?
gocubs40 - July 25, 2008
Yeah, and ...
I do know there’s one inning left. I don’t believe winners and losers are judged on how many men are LOB.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
it isn't the men left on.
it’s the men yet to score.
THE
GAME
IS
NOT

drewishdrewid - July 25, 2008
then why are you still here?
shouldn’t you leave and beat the traffic?
ballhawk - July 25, 2008
no, no. there’s time. keep hope alive.
Ryno72 - July 25, 2008
Well,
you may not be very familiar with baseball, but that’s not really how it works.
arioso - July 25, 2008
That's what you get when you leave 5 guys on in the last 3 innings
parrotinct - July 25, 2008
No..This is what you get when you have Bob Freakin Howry on a major league roster
cubsnlinux - July 25, 2008
Didn't Lou get the Memo?
Howry is nothing more than a Mop up guy
cubsnlinux - July 25, 2008
the non-strike was low...
It was not strike 3. That was home-town hopefulness.
Funny that they said Howry hasn’t allowed many inhereted runners to score. Maybe because Pinella doesn’t trust him to bring him in with runners on?
Ross - July 25, 2008
It looked like a strike to me but it didn't matter--no excuse to give up a HR and now a double.
DFA the guy.
zevkalman - July 25, 2008
Ross they had a sideview and the missed call and it was above the knees
total missed call
Ivy Walls - July 25, 2008
Agreed.
Len and Bob said so too.
sue369 - July 25, 2008
it was a good 3-4 inches above the knee at the front of the plate
according to the side view camera on WGN. Sorry Ross, we did get screwed on that.
LAcarl519 - July 25, 2008
Sure Howry Got Screwed Out of a K
but he still needed to buckle down and get the guy out.
Whether it’s fatigue or an injury or Father Time, I wouldn’t use Howry unless it was like 19-0.
CaliCub - July 25, 2008
i think it's time to send howry away
seriously he gives up so many runs in tight ballgames
lexmarklover - July 25, 2008
What about not
pitching him in tight ballgames late?

That is truly pathetic, no way should we be giving up a double on that
Gotta know who is running
CubsBall2202 - July 25, 2008
That ball just died in the grass...
long run for Fonz to get to it.
Jimmyeatworld - July 25, 2008
agreed. this whining for no reason is getting silly.
Complain about Howry’s poor pitching all you want (as you should!). But that double just ended up in a bad place. Sh^t happens.
LAcarl519 - July 25, 2008
Somebody go on the field and yell at Howry
nji232 - July 25, 2008
LOL. Still only one out. Do you think the Marlins are looking for a breaking pitch? :-)
zevkalman - July 25, 2008

wrigleyrocker12 - July 25, 2008
f ing howry
u suck so freaking much
lexmarklover - July 25, 2008
I have been trying to be positive, but...
What the hell is wrong with Howry?
Why is Daryl Ward making $1.2 million to hit .250 and strike out with the bases juiced?
What the hell is up with double digit LOB???
phudge.
Don Gerard - July 25, 2008
Why can't my farts smell like cotton candy?

Here is what I see on Howry
His FB is 3-4 mph slower than last year….he used to be 93-95 now is 90-92 and his slider is flatter…..
Meaning he is either hurt or losing it at his age. He could be scouted
Ivy Walls - July 25, 2008
My God
can we just DFA him yet?
jbertram - July 25, 2008
and may be ask DeRo to pitch?

drewishdrewid - July 25, 2008

sue369 - July 25, 2008
Not that I think
Howery should be pitching in the 9th inning of a tie game…..
But it boils really down to my pet peeve
RUNNERS LEFT ON BASE
kcjones - July 25, 2008
LOB is a killer
Especially late in the game. The Cubs pitching has been pretty good today, all things considered.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
Is Howry being considered?
nji232 - July 25, 2008
On the whole
the pitching has been very good for a while.
Reddevil - July 25, 2008
Whatever They've Been Doing
to get them on in the first place is what they need to do in order to get them in. Keep making with the walks and hits…stop putting “the game is in my hands” pressure on yourselves!
CaliCub - July 25, 2008
the problem with him is he's a one pitch pitcher
it’s as simple as that

Mr. Hendry please learn from you mistakes in 2004!
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 25, 2008
Admit it already,
Jimmyeatworld - July 25, 2008
What mistakes were those?
The players the Cubs needed in 2004 were there. They didn’t execute. That’s more on Dusty than on Hendry.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
Is that you..MDBNIU??
cubsnlinux - July 25, 2008
He just needs to admit it already.
Jimmyeatworld - July 25, 2008
I'm not MDBNIU
But he was right about the 2004 team. Hendry could have shipped Guzman for bull pen help but did not. It was a mistake.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 25, 2008

Jimmyeatworld - July 25, 2008

cubsnlinux - July 25, 2008
Pitching didn't lose this game...
You can’t have 10 hits, strand 12 people on base, score only two runs and expect to win too many games.
Shawon O Meter - July 25, 2008
I try NOT to be negative
but come on Howry, what the hell are you doing out there! If it weren’t for a great play by DeRosa last night we are looking at another loss due to Howry last night. Howry just seems like his days of dominance is over..
Chanman25 - July 25, 2008
When did howry ever have days of dominance?
CubsBall2202 - July 25, 2008

Ivy Walls - July 25, 2008
In this instance, Howry probably does need to be moved.
Whether that is to another team or to Iowa or to retirement, he needs to go. There’s less than a half season of a 3 year deal left to eat, and they’re going to have to pay him that whether he’s blowing games or sitting at home eating chips.
It’s time for Howry to go.
D98 - July 25, 2008
At least Shar Boy was pretty impressive and
he could replace Howry once he is dumped
lexmarklover - July 25, 2008
yeah, that's what I'm thinking too.
zevkalman - July 25, 2008
true
cubsnlinux - July 25, 2008
They're smoking the ball off of him even on outs
That’s why I still thought he sucked yesterday, even though he didn’t give up any runs. DeRosa saved his ass night.

Cubs are 3-5 since the ASB—not great, but not flat-out awful, either. Unless the Cubs went 7-1, there’s no way they would have kept up with the Brewers, who are 7-0.
Ups and downs. That’s how a season rolls.

Doggie Stalker - July 25, 2008

But Lou needs one more arm in the pen.
Howary is done.
Fat Erye is not going to help.
Walk’um in Cotts…no.
AAA crew…is in AAA for a reason.
We are truly short one guy.
With this rotation and 3 bullpen guys we could win it all.
Make the move Jim…make the move!
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 25, 2008

mambochicken23 - July 25, 2008
Would Smardzija

I highly suspect Hendry will get another arm, anyway.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
Everything. OK!

My Dream would be Burnett
and move him to the pen, but Ron Mahay looks good to me too.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 25, 2008
??????????
Burnett’s a starter. I saw enough of Mahay when he pitched here before. Those, sorry to say are not viable options.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - July 25, 2008
He's a starter who has injury issues.
He could also be insurance against Harden’s arm hurting later in the season.
Trade Cedone, Veal, Marshall to the Jays for him and Eckstein (to back up Theriot).
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 25, 2008
Well, who should they give up?
Teams aren’t going to let you have those guys for nothing.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
and those are the biggest traits of MDBNIU
cubsnlinux - July 25, 2008
as bad as Howry was today
our pitching only gave up 3 runs.
LAcarl519 - July 25, 2008
They had shown signs of snapping out of it the last two days
A bit of a regression today. 2-1 with Soriano back. Keep the faith.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
I am
Cubs can play .500 ball and should still make the play-offs, but I’m hoping for this team to be even better than just a “play-off team.”
Be we will see.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 25, 2008
They scored *2* runs.
And you guys are bitching about the bullpen?
Cubs pitchers ERA today was 3.00
That’s excellent.
Matt Allison - July 25, 2008
Agreed but
1 run ball games are won and lost really by the Pen. If they had done their job it would have been a victory.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 25, 2008
You can't expect a shutout every day
You’ve got to drive in at least one run when you had the chance in the sixth, seventh and eighth. Bad timing, bad at-bats.
I wouldn’t mind seeing another bullpen arm, but the middle of the order has to become more consistent.

When all you throw is a fastball, and it is 88-91 mph with little movement, you are going to have the Hermidas of the world kill you.
He needs to go, now. He cannot perform the job he is asked to do…get guys out. Even the outs he manages to get are hard hit shots.
Sole possession of first was fun, but hopefully the Cubs can get it back in Milwaukee. If the pen pitches like it has, then it could get ugly fast.
Curtain Jerker - July 25, 2008
thats why jim should trade him do something with him
before this gets out of hand
lexmarklover - July 25, 2008
Hold the phone, amigo
Have the Brewers already won today? I don’t think the game begins until 7 p.m.
And how many games has the pen lost us recently, up until this one? And what were the scores of those games?
I am not averse to getting another arm - Shark might actually be it - but let’s not let the facts get in the way here.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
Do you see Houston winning in Milwaukee tonight?
I’d love to see it, but I don’t. Manny Parra is pitching very well recently, and the Brewers kill lefties.
As for the bullpen, they have a post All-Star ERA of nearly 7. But, they only have one loss, so I guess that’s acceptable…
Curtain Jerker - July 25, 2008
Why bother playing, then?
Did you think Wandy Rodriguez would have beaten Zambrano last week? Rodriguez is pitching again tonight.
To show it works the other way, did you think Jason Marquis would have beaten Roy Halladay last month in Toronto?
Basically, if I’m following your logic correctly, why don’t you cede the division title to the Brewers right now?

All I said is that I don’t see Wandy Rodriguez (and others) beating the Brewers tonight. I wouldn’t drop dead in shock if it happened, because it could, but if I still bet on baseball, I’d take the Brewers. I hope I’m wrong, and Rodriguez pitches a no-hitter.
How that got transformed into giving the Brewers the division is beyond me.

BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 25, 2008

San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - July 25, 2008

You have to give up value to get some value.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
And even today...
they hit the ball….just didn’t get the big….it’s not like they only had 3 or 4 baserunners….they were patient and got somee walks…just no RBI’s
kcjones - July 25, 2008
Exactly
Plenty of hits, but never the big one.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
Because your trade ideas are usually nuts
Like the Cubs trading for a STARTER ( Burnett) who may or may not want you to keep him for the
next 2 years for 12 million per ( but only if he sucks). You always propose the same Cub players you claim suck and and act as if no other teams with SIGNIFICANTLY more to offer might be wanting the same players.
Look we blew are wad getting Harden for you so be happy.
Doggie Stalker - July 25, 2008
Really?
Two AAAA players and one good pitcher?
That is not the wad. We have Pie, Colvin, Ceda, etc… to play with. This team is riddled with large back end contracts so the time to win is now!
I know Burnett to the pen is crazy but I’m just thinking outside of the box. Plus I really don’t want to talk about the typical BS rent a pitcher pen guys because all of them suck.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 25, 2008
Yep 2AA Guys one very good Young pitcher and bench guy
For one guy with “FILTHY stuff who can HOPEFULLY go six innings IF he can start every 5th day
I was honestly a fair trade. I suggest you check out mlbtraderumors.com where guys who actually know ( well most of them) discuss what is actually going on and not Pie, Colvin and Ceda
for Halliday or whatever the odd idea is this week. Oh and what are the Yankees, Mets, Marlins
Brewers, Cardinals, Phillies, Red Sox Braves and nearly every team in the race looking for , why BULLPEN help either set up or closer. Most will have to live with what they have ( but damn those
D’backs for getting Rausch for so little) because prices are high and demand is higher.
Doggie Stalker - July 25, 2008
The Padres
are run by Kevin Towers, Sandy Alderson and Paul DePodesta—90 years of experience combined, and all they can come up with is the current 4A team.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - July 25, 2008
I think several AAA teams might be better
On some days.
I take back every mean thing I ever said about Ned Colletti. Please Ned get MADDUX out of there.
Schmits is NEVER coming back and Penny probably ain’t either. Kernshow is NOT reliable and the Stuilts guy (sic) is done. You need another reliable starter.
Doggie Stalker - July 25, 2008
OT: TDK
Goin to my third showing of The Dark Knight tonight, which will be my first time on IMAX. I’ve been told it is drastically different, maybe I’ll throw up a review with comparisons later tonight.
Dan
dtpollitt - July 25, 2008
The Dodgers
may be overpaying for their current record, but they are in the race and have infused young talent into their line-up. The Dodgers have talent in their system. The Padres—have nothing.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - July 25, 2008
Yes, Not B
If this team was scoring runs as it was earlier we wouldn’t be having this discussion. The pen LOOKS worse than it actually is, because there’s no margin for error any more.
Although teams are batting over .300 against Howry. That’s a problem
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - July 25, 2008
It is
In a 3-4 run game, no big deal. In this sort of a game, it is one.
This kind of reminds me of how Eyre started out last season. He came around, eventually. Howry has been up and down.
Aside from him, though, I really don’t see problems in the pen (not even Marmol).
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
I hope Howry gets a blister that lasts until about 11/1/08
What a flaming P.O.S.
Only good thing that could come out of this one is that HOPEFULLY Hendry will go out and try to get another 45-50 bullpen arms.
Well, being in 1st place was fun, while it lasted.
IlliniHimey - July 25, 2008
Uh ... check the standings, Ace
I think no matter what happens tonight in Brewtown, the Cubs still are in first place.
Are you posting without a license again?
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
Did I say that 1st place would end tonight?
No…......................
Reading comprehension dude. TRY IT!!!!!!!!

Easy Guys...
We lost a tough one today, and everybody feels bad, but we have a whole two months to go. I’ve seen some pretty amazing stuff happen as a fan so let’s not lose hope…and please let’s not take it out on each other.
CaliCub - July 25, 2008
CaliCub- It's OK. I hurt Hot Bruce's widdle feelings a couple of nights ago.
I have never met him, but it is painfully obvious that he is very sensitive when anyone has anything negative to say about the Cubs.

No, I have a real problem with people spewing bullsh*t

Go ahead, Ken
Flag it all you want, Mr. Policeman.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
I'd flag Himey before I'd flag NBF...
He’s obviously being provoked.
carmen_fanzone - July 25, 2008
carmen,
frankly, I thought “Illionishimey” was banned. NBF provokes arguments simply because he thinks his view of things is the only view. NBF is nothing more than a hack who thinks he knows more than he does.
Mr W - July 25, 2008
I thought Himey was banned too...
....I don’t condone NBF’s comments because he was baited and obviously took the bait. But comparing the two’s comments, I’d argue that Himey’s way were way more out of line. But, hey, that’s just my humble opinion.

My Own Observations On the Past Week
CaliCub - July 25, 2008
Stupid Howry
Just venting. Carry on.
08Cubs - July 25, 2008
A Solid Post Nonetheless

dtpollitt - July 25, 2008
Overreact?
Well, then I guess Pinella plays Howry because Howry must have pictures of Pinella in a compromising position.
What else explains why Pinella would continually throw this loser out there.
Oh, and for those of you zealots that think Howry will eventually warm up, NEWS FLASH!!!!!!!!
Season is about 100 games over. Just when is Howry going to ‘shine’?

IlliniHimey - July 25, 2008
I would have like to have seen Marshall in that Spot in the 9th
The fact that you had the top of your order up the next half inning Lou did not need to double switch and could have pitched him a couple of innings if needed. It is just irresponsible to throw the same guy out three days in a row especially when he has been struggling like that.
Still…the offense has to become more consistent..period. We should have won all of these games after the ASB. The pitching has been outstanding. Just have to hope that when we finally do get hot with the bats that the pitching does not go south
TheRiot Police - July 25, 2008
All of them?
Really?
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
Except maybe the Johnson game....yes
We have lost
2-1, 4-1, 2-0, 9-2, 3-2 since the break
All of those were winnable games (9-2 game did not get out of hand till late when Lou let hart take one on the chin) if our offense was more consistent. I understand that you can’t win them all, but it sucks to give up 5 games when the pitching has been solid.
TheRiot Police - July 25, 2008
I'm with you on
the 2-1, 2-0 and today’s game. Realistically, I think those were their best chances to win.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
agreed
Everyone is so down on Howry, but the fact of the matter is he has been overused lately. What does Lou have against Marshall? He did great a few weeks back. I too would have used him in the ninth.
mgfabc - July 25, 2008
He's been more consistent starting than relieving
In my opinion…though hes had good and bad gamee doing both
kcjones - July 25, 2008
I don't think Marshall has been outright awful
except for his relief appearance in the Diamondbacks’ game a few nights ago.
If the game goes into extras, you want Marshall to be your long man, no?
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
Probably so...but it would have come at the expense of ARAM or Dome or Soto
Because the pitcher’s spot could have come up in 10th and Lou would have been forced to double switch Dero or Blanco to protect Marshall for a couple of innings. I would have done Marshall 9 and 10, gaudin 11, 12, and then after that it is a crap shoot.
Howry should have been a last resort since he had already pitched two days in a row and I believe that he threw over 30 pitches in the AZ appearance
TheRiot Police - July 25, 2008
I could dig that
Not Bruce Froemming - July 25, 2008
A few observations from the last few games
Writing this down is therapuetic for me since I go into a funk after a tough loss. Thanks for induldging me.
First the Negatives:
1. Bob Howry is bad. We don’t really have many other options but he is not the solution;
Kerry, I promise I won’t be so hard on you the next time you have a bad outing.
mgfabc - July 25, 2008
Good Stuff and Well-Balanced
DLee this year is sort of like Sammy was in 2004. After a while it became apparent that he needed to be moved down in the order, so maybe we’ll see that with Derrek in the coming weeks.
CaliCub - July 25, 2008
I can't figure out Lee....
He actually has the most hits in the NL (or at least he did a couple of days ago)......he just seems to miss getting the RBI’s
kcjones - July 25, 2008
I correct my self....3rd most hits in NL
4th now….Braun just passed him
kcjones - July 25, 2008
OT: This oughta cheer us up
Mad Men comes back Sunday night!!
Emelie - July 25, 2008
Samardzija
There is a lot to like about this kid. All in all, he was pretty posed, although the pitch-out showed that he still has a Nuke LaLoosh kink or two to iron out.
His fastball was sweet. 95-98 miles an hour, with a little snap at the end that was putting it right on the outside corner to righties. Unfortunately, he does need another pitch that he can get over the plate. Cantu got to him because he was consistently putting the fastball in the same place, and he needed an out pitch. I think that he shook off Soto on that one. It is good to have confidence in your fastball, and he would have gotten a lot of major league hitters out with what he was offering, but the Fish have some good hitters.
vonde6 - July 25, 2008
Better Than I Expected
While he gave up a run in two innings, in the main I liked what I saw out of him. There were some jitters but he didn’t completely implode out there today. The tailing fastball looked pretty dang nasty at times.
