When Mike Jacobs' second homer of the day (and yes, it was definitely a HR, the umpires got it right -- it hit off the concrete facing behind the basket, above the yellow line) left the Yard in the third inning, making the score 5-0 Marlins and you could hear the sound of anguished wrist-slitting all over Wrigleyville, I was contemplating how I'd write up a recap of what appeared to be the makings of another mess of a game, and was thinking I'd write a couple of sentences and shut the computer down -- if I even could; when I left my house my cable was completely out and I had no TV, phone or internet service.
About two hours later, Jeff Samardzija had his first major league save and the Cubs had a come-from-behind 9-6 win over the Marlins, not a moment too soon, and that, combined with the Astros' 11-6 win over the Brewers (and when Houston's seven-run fifth inning was posted on the Wrigley Field scoreboard, a huge cheer rippled through the crowd of 41,017), put the Cubs back in first place by a game, awaiting the four-game showdown with the Brewers in Milwaukee starting tomorrow.
Dave said to me when Samardzija came into the game in the 8th and started mowing down Marlins hitters, "He could do for the Cubs what Bobby Jenks did for the 2005 White Sox", and I think that's an apt comparison -- although Jenks, of course, became the closer, and Samardzija won't (unless some really strange things happen). But the Shark could take over a key setup role and it's clear already that Lou trusts him in a game situation. Today, Samardzija seemed more in control of himself -- wasn't overthrowing, the fastest pitch I saw on the ballpark speed meter was 95, and he threw strikes again (16 in 25 pitches). The game ended on a throwback play, Jim Edmonds laying flat-out like he was ten years younger, and catching Jorge Cantu's line drive into the left-center field gap. (Did you ever think you'd hear a standing ovation like that one for Jim Edmonds? At Wrigley Field? Told you this was one special season.)
The game began to turn when Alfonso Soriano tied it with a three-run homer in the fourth. And even though Jason Marquis coughed it right back with a HR allowed to Dan Uggla -- the eighth hit in the series by the Marlins -- give credit to Marquis for eating up innings again. He managed to finish six innings on a warm, though not too humid, afternoon, saving most of the bullpen. And in that sixth inning, we were sitting in LF shaking our heads at Ryan Theriot again, as he just didn't quite have the range or arm to throw out Hanley Ramirez on a grounder to deep short. But then, Theriot followed that with a diving stop and flip on Jeremy Hermida's ball that looked like it was going up the middle, and Mark DeRosa nearly turned it into the slickest DP of the year (WEB GEM!). When Cantu hit into a DP to end the inning, it seemed to energize the Cubs, though it took them one more inning to break through against Mark Hendrickson.
Derrek Lee homered to tie the game. But the key plays came later, when Hendrickson threw a wild pitch while pinch-hitter Daryle Ward was at bat. That prompted Fredi Gonzalez to order Ward intentionally walked (how many times have you seen a pinch-intentional walk?), loading the bases for the Wonder Hamster.
I still can't figure out how a guy that small hits the ball that far. I said to my son Mark (now with a 9-1 record), "You're almost as tall as Fontenot!" (He is, too: 5-2, at almost 13.) His double over Josh Willingham's head cleared the bases and won the game. And though it had no effect on the final score, Fontenot's heads-up baserunning play on Soriano's subsequent grounder to third prolonged the inning for one more batter.
Must-win? No. But "important win"? Definitely, and it'll put the Cubs in a good frame of mind for the series starting tomorrow night (can you figure out the Astros? They take two of three from the Cubs at home, two of three from the Brewers in Milwaukee, and in between get swept by the Pirates).
Finally, a little musical interlude, prompted by watching Scott Eyre get up ... and sit down ... and get up ... and sit down ... at least that many times in the bullpen today, without getting into the game. In fact, since being activated on Wednesday, Eyre has warmed up every day without ever getting into a game, even the 12-inning game yesterday. So with apologies to the Kingston Trio, here is "Scotty Never Got To Play":
Let me tell you the storyWe deserve a few laughs, don't we? On to Milwaukee. I'll be there Wednesday and Thursday.
Of a man named Scotty
On this and every day
He put on his uniform,
Went out to the bullpen
But he never got to play
Scotty got the call
From the man in the dugout
So he threw a few baseballs
But when he thought he'd go in,
"Sit on down, Scotty!"
Scotty couldn't get in the game
Chorus:
Did he ever return,
No he never returned
And his fate is still unlearned
He may sit forever
On that bullpen bench
He's the man who never returned.

Good win
Gonna be a fun next 4 days
MillsChC - July 27, 2008
I have a feeling
that this series is going to rival the 5 gamer against St. Louis a few years back.
It’s gonna be intense
gwood - July 27, 2008
I was thinking the same thing...
... that this is probably the biggest single series against a division rival since that one (in 2003).
Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
Al,
anybody, (scouts), ooking at Marquis today?
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
Not that I've heard of.
And if they were, they might not have been that impressed…
Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
I agree.
He was serviceable today, though, no?
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
He ate up six innings, which helped a lot...
... rested the bullpen. That IS of value to a team.
Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
Exactly!
He’s got value and Cubs fans should be happy with him.
At least we don’t have to run Paul Kilgus (?) or Steve Wilson out there every 5th day.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
Kilgus and WIlson
Kilgus was never good. Wilson was decent as a reliever but should never have been a starter. They had a lot of holes in their rotation and that’s why we got stuck with him starting. Things got so bad in the early 90s that even Paul Assenmacher started a game. And I think Mitch WIlliams started a few as well. Those guys definitely belonged in the pen.
Marquis is a better starter than Kilgus and Wilson – definitely.
danimal15 - July 27, 2008
I meant er... looking with an L...
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
I was saying exactly the same thing
to a Cardinals-fan friend of mine yesterday. Easily the biggest series since the 2003 Cardinals series, perhaps the greatest series I’ve ever seen. (And had the Cubs lost 4 of 5 and everything else happened as it did, I would have said exactly the same thing.)
Not Bruce Froemming - July 27, 2008
I ran errands
with the Cubs down 6-5. Not because I was giving up but because I wanted to change the mojo.
Does this mean I can’t watch another Cub game this year? I hope not.
Josh Timmers - July 27, 2008
I did the same thing.
When Jacobs hit his second HR I left and went out w/ the dogs. We played in the sprinkler. I came in to get something to drink/check the score just as Riot GIDP.
So I went back out. At least it worked! :-)
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 27, 2008
funny I did the same...
...we went to the lake with my son and our dog.
A pretty cool experience, I was following the game via my Blackberry and it showed two outs in the 9th…a second later and we actually heard Wrigley erupt (must have been Jimmy Ballgames catch) from the Waveland golf course and then a very faint rendition of Go Cubs Go!
I was pretty jealous that I wasnt there!
JB 23 - July 27, 2008
Wow, you could hear the crowd from that far away?
That’s almost a mile. Amazing.
Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
when Fontenot got that double
the CAMERA shook.
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
It was LOUD, all right.
Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
in my living room too. :P
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
We appreciate the sacrifice you made today.
Since most of the guys seem to have their stroke back now, I would highly encourage you to watch the next four games.
DeRoMyHero - July 27, 2008
I went for a walk when we were down 5-0
Came back and it was 6-5. Tempted to not watch the rest, but thank goodness I did!
carmen_fanzone - July 27, 2008
Game thread
As I mentioned in the game thread i was at a bridal shower this afternoon and when I went to the bathroom I passed the bar and saw it was 5-0 and said a few choice words, Went back to party. Rode home with someone who hates sports so I respected her not wanting the game on. walked into the house just in time to hear Pat call the Fontenot double.
puckishcubsfan - July 27, 2008
Turd!!
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
Turd is the new first!
:-P
Goodie1969 - July 27, 2008
So that's where our offense went...
Soriano has returned, it appears, and just in time for this series. Fontenot continues to defy Lou to sit him on the bench. Samardzija looks like the real deal. All in all, a great Sunday afternoon, and a nice mood-lightener to start the week. Bring on the Suds!
Goodie1969 - July 27, 2008
This happened to Soriano the last time he went on the DL.
Came back slowly, then suddenly got hot and carried the Cubs through an entire homestand.
It couldn’t have come at a better time.
Fontenot is useful—but I don’t think he can play every day. If Lou picks his spots well he can be a very productive bench player.
Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
Good point
I would like to think that Lou is going to be really creative, though, in finding ways to get Fontenot’s bat in that lineup whenever he can. He has a penchant for riding the hot horse.
Goodie1969 - July 27, 2008
Im there Tuesday... sorry I wont get a chance to meet you.
btw I listen to the cubcast podcast and Al you were mention on Fridays episode
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008
that's the best podcast IMHO
Emelie - July 27, 2008
i agree
the podcasts are informative, but they make me laugh. They seem like they’d be fun guys to hang out with.
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008
Wait, which podcast is this? And how did it slip by me?
dtpollitt - July 27, 2008
I picked them up off of iTunes
but you can also find them at cubcast.com. I tried other cubs podcasts and found them frat party juvenile. This one is fun, knowledgeable, and well produced.
Emelie - July 27, 2008
Can you tell me official name of it? I'm on the iTunes podcast site, but there are about two dozen to choose from
dtpollitt - July 27, 2008
You mean the Len and Bob cast, or the Cubscast?
dtpollitt - July 27, 2008
I download it on my computer.... so I go to the website
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008
cubcast
I found Len & Bob’s cast to be disappointing … I like cubcast because it’s 30 minutes+, L&B is like 5 minutes. I listen to cubcast in the gym and it’s a perfect fit
Emelie - July 27, 2008
The Cubscast guys emailed me last week...
... and asked me if I’d do a short interview for their podcast… they’re cool guys and I like their site.
Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
can't wait to hear it ... a good fit between you and the boys
Emelie - July 27, 2008
I agree
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008
A little subdued
since the third, more hyper dude, went AWOL and now there’s only two hosts temporarily. I ‘ve been listening since the beginning and enjoy it though.
JohnM - July 27, 2008
what I like about it is that you can tell they are all friends
so listening to them is interesting, but kinda funny how they kinda pick on each a bit.
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008
exactly and not in that frat boy south park kind of way either
Emelie - July 27, 2008
thats exactly what I meant 180 degrees they seem like guys I'd watch a game with
not to mention one of them took off a cast for comic con. cant get much more anti- frat boy than that. :)
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008

mondello58 - July 27, 2008
Give my regards to Devil's Lake
JohnM - July 28, 2008
No, He is not a everyday player
But he does bring those qualities to help a team win. He can be a PH, PR or take the place of some that needs a day off. He can be that “X factor” that a team needs to win.
jajonez77 - July 27, 2008
Also
While he didn’t do anything today Im glad Edmonds is back.
puckishcubsfan - July 27, 2008
Didn't do anything?
How about that game-ending catch?
Goodie1969 - July 27, 2008
made me jump up and down!
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
Edmonds is nothing but a washed up show-off!!
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
guess dive
face-planting fielder!
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
LOL
We’ll take it!
Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
Its interesting how much LESS
irritating that is now that he’s a Cub. :-)

She's back....
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
Food outranked BCB
i was starving.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 27, 2008
I've got some Rico's pizza at the office.
But I’m going to go home soon and feed the girls. Big week ahead, gonna try to get a $2 million month in August.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
He was obviously loafing so that he could get on webgems, what a ham.
j/k
DudeVf11 - July 27, 2008
Fontenometer now up to .913
(On-base Plus Sneaky power)
Jerry Mumphrey - July 27, 2008
The rotation looks great for this 4 game set:
Lilly vs Sabathia
Zambrano vs Sheets
Dempster vs Parra
Harden vs TBA
If there’s a better 1-4 in baseball, I don’t know who they are. Is this the biggest series of the year? I think so, at least so far, based solely on the momentum one team will have coming out of it.
Dan
dtpollitt - July 27, 2008
I would say biggest series of the year so far
So its great that the Cubs go into it after winning against a good young team [Marlins] in come-from-behind fashion. While the Brewers, on the other hand, lost to a bad old team [Astros]. Its going to be a great series and hopefully the Cubs have broken out of their offensive funk.
DTJchris - July 27, 2008
It very easily could have been an Astros sweep
Remember the Brewers needed a late comeback to win Saturday.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 27, 2008
I like the fact that CC has had 3 straight complete games--it can't last forever.
This first game will really set the tone for the whole series. If we can somehow find a way to win game #1 with Lilly going against their “rental-stud” (and we are without Woody), that sets us up very well for the rest of the series, with Z, Dempster and Harden throwing the last three and Woody likely back for the last two games (hopefully).
If on the other hand, CC throws another 8+ inning shut down game, the young Suds have the mo-mo going into the last three games of this series. My guess is we really have a chance to crush the spirit of the BrewCrew tomorrow. LET”S DO IT!!
LAcarl519 - July 27, 2008
The way I look at it
First game - advantage Brewers
Fourth game - advantage Cubs
Second and third games—tossups
I’ll be happy if the Cubs went 2-2.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 27, 2008
I agree. That is why I say
that if we can somehow or another find a way for Lilly to beat CC, that would be a huge letdown for the young BrewCrew. A first game loss will be much tougher on them than the Cubs.
I think the Brewers expect to win with CC throwing against our #3 /4 starter.
LAcarl519 - July 27, 2008
The Cubs have faced CC once in his career.
June 21, 2006 at Cleveland. That was a putrid Cubs team, but they beat the living daylights out of CC.
Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
it won't be the same lineup without Neifi in the two hole!
LAcarl519 - July 27, 2008
LOL
True, this is a very different Cub team. But right there is proof that CC can be hit, and hit hard.
Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
I remember the Tribe's defense didn't give CC any help.
Not sure if the defensive misplays showed up on the box score, but it definitely affected the game.
cowsarecool220 - July 27, 2008
I'll take a split, too...
The Brewers have been playing great baseball even prior to acquiring CC, holding ground against them ain their park to me is a victory for the Cubs. For whatever reason our pen has had some implosion problems v. the Brewers so I am not down about having to rely on Shark for a bigger role right now.
DudeVf11 - July 27, 2008
I give the Cubs an
advantage in game 4. I sure hope Harden can beat TBA ;).
If Harden is pitching like he did Saturday, Lou will leave him in longer for this series.
gwood - July 28, 2008
I thought this too, but then I looked at his pitch counts in his four games with the Brewers:
6 IP, 97 pitches
9 IP, 122
9 IP, 110
9 IP, 106
He’s only given up 5 ER, 7 BB, 20 H, and 31 Ks.
Now, those pitch counts might be high for say, Harden, but Sabathia’s thrown 100+ pitches in 18 of 22 appearances this year. The guy’s a horse. Hopefully it wears him down in the long-run, but he’s sure as hell used to going deep.
Dan
dtpollitt - July 27, 2008
He's the Brewers' version of Zambrano
And Harden is the Cubs’ version of Sheets.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 27, 2008
I am much more worried about how sharp Z will be after throwing 125 in his last start. :-(
I just hope he is staying with his shoulder exercises.
LAcarl519 - July 27, 2008
I like our chances
Sabathia is coming off of 2 or 3 complete games? At some point that is going to catch up to them. I understand the rental pitcher mentality. But, they may need him in late Aug. and Sept.
jajonez77 - July 27, 2008
3 complete games, IIRC
dtpollitt - July 27, 2008
Since Suppan pitched today
and won’t pitch in the series…who gets the TBA slot? Unless Yost scraps his plan already and uses McClung at home, looks as though it may be Bush.
Goodie1969 - July 27, 2008
I thought Bush was pitching that day
JohnM - July 27, 2008
I guess
you’re right! Dan had TBA in there, so I didn’t check first.
Goodie1969 - July 27, 2008
I checked the Brewers' website for probables, and they had "TBA" in that slot
dtpollitt - July 27, 2008
Check Bush's home splits
brewfan2 told us earlier in the week how he and McClung are now in a home/road platoon based on their splits.
JohnM - July 27, 2008
Oh, I believe you, I was just going off the official website.
dtpollitt - July 27, 2008
Sure, I didn't mean that
Just explaining what I understood from earlier discussions of the Brewers’ revolving number 5 starter slot.
JohnM - July 27, 2008
If Yost sticks with the platoon
Bush will pitch Thursday. He’s starting home games in the fifth slot, and McClung is starting road games in the fifth slot.
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything like that before.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 27, 2008
Here's a roster for the rest of the year.
Zambrano
Harden
Lilly
Dempster
Marshall
Lieber (or someone else)
Cotts
Eyre (or someone else)
Gaudin
Marmol
Shark
Woody
Blanco
Soto
Lee
DeRosa
Theriot
Ramirez
Soriano
Edmonds
Johnson
Fukudome
Cedeno
Fontenot
Ward
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
And do what with Howry and Marqius?
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
DFA both.
Try to trade them, if not, release them.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
I strongly believe
that is retarded.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
Just wait and see...
Howry is as good as gone. If the Cubs can find anyone to take any of Marquis ‘09 money, he will be gone.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
Marquis is fine where he is at.
Howry won’t be DFA-ed.
It has been a rough week but it isn’t smart to just cut these guys with having a clear way to make the team better.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
there are those who would argue
that DFA-ing Howry ALREADY makes the team better.
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
To replace him with who?
Wertz? Hart? Piggy?
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
Look at the roster above...
The Shark replaces Howry.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
Liber is hurt and too old to pitch.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
Then you bring up Hart.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
You are kidding right?
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
LIber is hurt? I missed this...
dtpollitt - July 27, 2008
he's on the DL
for some kind of foot thing.
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
nothing to support that.
all we know is that he’s barely been ALLOWED to pitch.
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
Exactamundo drew...
This guy doesn’t understand roster construction.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
More likely
You’re reacting emotionally to Howry playing badly as opposed to taking a real look at the talent on the team.
Suggest changes but you should be able to show how the team gets better with said changes more than just “I want him off the team.”
That is just childish.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
I'm not even going to reply to you anymore.
Why? You don’t understand roster construction. You also don’t know me. I do not react emotionally to the roster. Howry is clearly finished. There are many ways that replacing both Howry & Marquis makes the team better. Number one, it gets another lefty in the rotation. Do you not understand the value of left handers? Number two, you replace Howry with the Shark. I don’t just want anyone off the team. I want pitchers in the rotation & the bull pen who can get the job done. Simple.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
smart idea jimmy
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008
Thank you man of madison.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
actually female but regardless
my point still the same
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008
man!
Woman!
I’m sorry, I thought you were a man.
You could call me Dennis.
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
lol
dtpollitt - July 27, 2008
Thank you, you beautiful Madison girl!
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
never noticed how sue and i drool over geo?
thats normally the only hint.
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008
we're an open-minded community
you could be a guy and still drool over Geo.
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
Marshall in the Pen is more
valuable with all of these starters getting way to high to pitch counts.
Marquis is a good 5th starter.
Howry is an issues but he’s better than other options as of right now.
And answer this question honestly. When Jimmy Ballgame was sucking in May did you say he was done?
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
a lot of us did
but while his offense was not good at the start, his D was pretty on.
All Howry does is pitch. No one expects him to hit. There’s nothing he can do when he’s not pitching to balance his performance out. I dunno if I’d DFA or trade him, but I’d sure love it if he could replace Scott Eyre on the “do-not-use” list. Scotty could use the work, and Howry is best left sitting pine for the foreseeable future.
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
It only took 30 minutes
for Marquis to go from “above-average” in your estimation to just “good.” Shall we all check back in another 1/2 hr?
Goodie1969 - July 27, 2008
You are right
a more accurate assessment of Marquis is above average.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
I'll answer honestly.
I thought it was a shrewd move by Hendry. You can ask Drew & Goodie on here, (both on now). I thought it was such a good idea that I took a beating here on BCB, because I immediately thought it was a better, smarter option that Pie at that point.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
I'll vouch for the Edmonds love
expressed by Jimmyeatworld. He was verbally slapped about but held firm.
Goodie1969 - July 27, 2008
I had to eat my words on the whole Edmonds thing
I thought he was done for sure. Guess that is why I one of the reasons I am not a GM.
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008
Then I'll give you credit on Edmonds
But I still think Marquis is unappreciated and undervalued.
Howry sucks. I agree. But he’s going to have to work as the “just in case of emergency” guy simply because we don’t have other options. Liber is gone…the shark is untrusted…Cotts and Eyre both suck as much as Howry.
I look at him as a necessary evil right now.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
I have multiple times atoned for this...
I even have offered to bring muffins to the next fan club meeting. :)
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008
The Shark is already trusted.
The Shark isn’t going anywhere. Did you listen to Lou in the post game, he practically said so. We have plenty of options, which I have pointed out to you again and again.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
barblett bob never came back.. so no malt for me :(
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008
Malt Cup!
When are you going to be at Wrigley next?
I know I bet Al as well…
Hit me up at bobkrausejr@aol.com.
BartlettBob - July 27, 2008
Awesome that you're "paying" up
Very honorable!
flachimesa - July 27, 2008
Wow
I doubt I will make it this year, but thank you. :)
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008
But the odds
the shark could
A.) turn into Carlos Marmol
B.) turn into Kevin Hart
If A.) happens great then we have solved our pen problem
If B.) happens then it’s sad and then we are still in search of a back up plan.
If you DFA Howry then we have no back up plan.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
have you watched the two times Jeff Spellcheck has pitched?
There’s no way he turns into Kevin Hart.
Hopefully, he turns into Kerry Wood of 2003, without the injuries.
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
I hope your right
but are you willing to bet everything on that fact and doesn’t it make sense to at least keep a back up plan around just in case we are wrong about Shark?
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
to me
Marshall is that back-up plan, not Bobby Howry.
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
Lou will never use Marshall that way
He wants guys who throw fastballs and attack the strikezone.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
he's already used Marshall that way
who came in after Marmol blew that game in the 9th?
Marshall.
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
Right
And not only that, since he is a long man he was able to go 2 strong innings until we pulled out the win. And although we can’t say for sure, Howry more than likely would have handed us a loss.
Goodie1969 - July 27, 2008
Howry
certainly wouldn’t have been able to go two.
I’m not sure I can remember the last time Howry came in and DIDN’T give up a run.
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
Agree...
...Lou likes power arms late in the game and Marshall does not fit the bill. Him being a lefty is also an issue, since most the hitters hit from the right side.
There is no way they DFA Howry, and I also don’t think they have given up on him, but as of now, the spot is Jeff S’s to lose.
MPH73 - July 28, 2008
As a Notre Dame man...
and big fan of the Shark, I think we can’t get too crazy yet about him. He’s pitched four innings. The league hasn’t even worked out how to pitch him yet.
I want him to succeed as much as anyone, but let’s not get too crazy yet.
Cubfansince1957 - July 27, 2008
Tell that to Lou.
He was actually tickled shitless talking about Jeff in his post game PC.
sue369 - July 27, 2008
I thought
I heard Bob or Len list the split finger pitch as one of Jeff SpellCheck’s pitches. Is that true? If so, is that wise? I thought that the split finger pitch puts a lot more stress on the arm, and leads to more injuries, then say a changeup.
gwood - July 28, 2008
Yeah,
and I could get killed in a car wreck on the way home tonight. Life is uncertain. However, the Shark has not shown any indications since he was drafted that he will be nothing but a great ML pitcher. Howry is finished, (it hurts to type that, I’m a Howry guy), he is not a back up plan- he’s a primary RH set-up man who can no longer do his job.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
I agree with your assessment
except he’s got more upside than any other reliever on the team not named shark.
Trust me. Keep this guy around. Kick him off if the playoff roster if we get that far.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
you think Bobby Howry
has a bigger upside than Marshal or Marmol?
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
Should have been more clear
Biggest up side for the third slot in the pen.
And yes he’s got more upside than marshall.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
...
I don’t see how.
But, ok.
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
I'd take Marshall over Howry ANY day
slcathena - July 27, 2008
If Jeff Spellcheck
can be consistent, he’s a hell of a better setup man than Howry was even last year, much less this year.
But don’t we have room on the roster anyway? We gave four players to the As and got two back, doesn’t that leave two spots on the 25 man roster?
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
You know, the other 29 teams aren't blind.
Who in their right mind would take onthe money marquis is owned? I believe he is due $10 million next year!
cowsarecool220 - July 27, 2008
INAPPROPRIATE LANGUAGE!
Do not use “retarded” again. Thank you.
Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
Thank you Al.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
Thanks Al
I was about to say something, but you beat me to it.
Curtain Jerker - July 27, 2008
I think it is silly to DFA both of those guys right now...
...a lot of a key opponents need relief. Marquis is a NUMBER FIVE STARTER. And he has done what he is supposed to in that slot – eat up innings, and keep us in the game. Marshall gives us depth in that position if we have an injury. And Howry, although imploding, I am still not convinced DFA-ing him is a smart move, considering someone like the Brewers or Mets could pick him up (I don’t know the rules for this, however).
Dan
dtpollitt - July 27, 2008
Erye may never pitch for Lou ever again
but for some reason he keeps running Howry out there.
If you want to DFA anyone it would be Erye.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
I suspect Eyre may be gone when Wood comes back.
Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
I think you might be right.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
So Lou
is going to go with Cotts and Marshall as the lefties in the pen? Wouldn’t that suggest that Marquis isn’t going anywhere, b/c who else would join Cotts as a lefty in the pen?
gwood - July 28, 2008
Great point about Marquis
He is an above average 5th starter. Just leave him be.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
And if we DFA him, don't we have to still pay his $21 million dollar salary?
I’m convinced that the guys that (would) fill in for Marquis are necessary for depth, especially considering how some guys can and have been injured in the past or this year – Wood, Marmol’s overuse, Harden, even Zambrano. DFA-ing Marquis gives us one less guy to call up from the minors. Keep Marquis where he is, let him eat up innings for the last 58 games, and we can worry about what to do with him come playoffs.
Dan
dtpollitt - July 27, 2008
If a player is DFA'd.
The team has 10 days to either trade him, send him down, or release him. If the Cubs can get anyone to take any of Marquis ‘09 money, he’s gone. Marquis is not needed for depth. Marmol has been “over used” b/c Howry can no longer do his job.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
It's not $21 million.
It’s about $11 million—what’s left of this year, plus about $9m for next.
Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
He's not an above average 5th starter.
Marquis is a serviceable 5th starter. However, he is resistant to coaching. Lou wants another lefty in the rotation. Additionally, the Cubs want to get out from under some of his contract. Call it retarded all you want. It is likely to happen.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
Lou wants a lot of things
but the best place for Marquis is in the rotation.
Leave Marshall where he’s at in the pen.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
I think Lou might go to a Harden/Marshall combo
When Harden pitches, he comes out in the fifth or sixth and Marshall goes the rest of the way (or at least tries to).
Marquis isn’t great, but he’s a fifth starter. For the most part, I think he’s pitched like one.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 27, 2008
He's pitched well for a 5th starter
and I like the harden/marshall combo idea
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
Apparently it gives a team two different looks
Harden with the right-handed heat, Marshall with the lefty curve.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 27, 2008
How would you feel about this:
Harden goes 6, you bring in Cotts for the seventh. In the eigth, you bring in Marmol, Gaudin, or the Shark. Then you bring in Woody to close.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
it mean you know
you burn the bullpen every five days. Other teams would know that too. They’d work even harder to drive up the other starters’ pitch-counts, knowing that the pen is gassed. Cotts, Marmol, Gaudin and Woody are the most used relievers. Lou doesn’t like to go to the other guys…
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
That's right.
I was trying to show another way besides Harden/Marshall. You can’t do Harden/Marshall every five days either. Of course on other days you have to use the bull pen in different ways. I think Lou will use the other pitchers down there when he can count on them to do their job. Eyre is a speciaity lefty, he will only get match-up work the rest of the year.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
if he gets any at all.
I’d love to see Lou use the bullpen this way.
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
I think it will only be a couple of weeks...
until Lou, Hendry & Larry get the bull pen straightened out. I firmly believe that based on Lou’s past that this will happen, and Lou will be able to count on the ‘pen to do their job, and use it accordingly.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
Hmmm
What about skipping every 3rd or 4th Harden start by using Sean? That way, Harden stays fresher, and you still get Marshall in?
Curtain Jerker - July 27, 2008
I don't disagree...
...and the Cubs are not going to fail to make the playoffs because of anything Marquis does or doesn’t do. If this club struggles in the last 50 games, it will be because the top 3 pitchers and pen really struggle.
The bats will be ok and will score enouph runs to win their share of games. As always, how this turns out will be dependent on how the pitching performs over 9 innings.
MPH73 - July 28, 2008
Marquis had two pitches to the same guy that came within 6 inches of being long doubles
instead of home runs. Sh^t happens. He still got us through 6 innings today in spite of the fact that he couldn’t keep the ball down. With the wind blowing in, he gives up 2-3 runs max, as those same balls are likely caught.
LAcarl519 - July 27, 2008
well, ok
but the wind wasn’t blowing in. It seemed like in the first half of the season, ALL of those balls that would normally be hit for doubles were going out on Marquis. Baseball is a game on inches, and Marquis always seems to come up just a bit short. We won in spite of him, not because of him.
drewishdrewid - July 27, 2008
don't kid yourself though, he still stayed focused to give the team six innings
and his two long at bats, including the walk before the Soriano 3 run homer was a key to the game. He helped with his bat.
At least he kept his head in the game. That walk was a critical play that allowed Soriano to hit that homer and he wore the pitcher down with long at bats. He was one of the few hitters who had long at bats today.
At least he did something right!!
LAcarl519 - July 27, 2008
Great point!
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
He did.
I don’t hate Marquis, However, there is a difference between logically assessing a team’s roster and what the players bring to the table, (roster), and just taking what you get. At times, yes, Marquis pitches very well. Like vs. SF a couple of weeks ago, he was consistently ahead in the count, kept the ball down, trusted his stuff and threw strikes. Other times this year, he has just plain stunk, tried to be too fine with his pitches, didn’t pitch to contact & didn’t spot his fastball. The point is that Marquis is inconsistent.
Jimmyeatworld - July 27, 2008
Not necessarily a Marquis supporter here, but . . .
isn’t that the definition of a fifth starter, inconsistent? I mean, many teams would love it if their fifth starter had a .500 record at the end of the season. Marquis has games where he is untouchable and then there are games like yesterday where he is average, and then there are the real stinkers.
My problem isn’t necessarily with Marquis, as frustrating as he is. My problem is that we have Marshall on our team, who could do Marquis’ job for a lot less money. I can’t say for sure that Marshall would be better than Marquis, but he couldn’t be any worse. Plus Marshall is a lefty
gwood - July 28, 2008
how long have i been say the same thing about marquis?!?
cubswynn - July 28, 2008
I liked the way
Lou brings Marshall in after Harden, its a great tactic to keep opposing teams off balance if Harden has to get taken out early
gwood - July 27, 2008
There were a lot of positives to take from today
The first would be the Shark. What can you say? I said it in the game thread. He has that swagger that says “Hit this.” Marmol and the Shark will couple to setup Wood to be a very formidable 1-2 and 3.
Second, the offense. I hope Sori coming back and filling his role helps everyone come out of their funk. This team when it comes to offense is going to come around. They are too good to stay in a slump.
It was a fun, fun game to watch! And it should be a fun, fun series to watch in Milwaukee.
jajonez77 - July 27, 2008

what a relief today’s game was. were still in 1st and the real test comes this week. onward to the brew crew.

we needed this game bad.
cubsluver22 - July 27, 2008
the shark
samardzija is now tied with mariano rivera in career two innings saves. how about that!
brian custer - July 27, 2008
That can't be right.
Mariano Rivera has only ONE two inning save in his entire career?
Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
No...
it’s 11 that Rivera has. They had a graphic on TBS today when talking about Gossage.
mondello58 - July 27, 2008
Rivera has 11
it was on today’s game. Hoffman has 7
LAcarl519 - July 27, 2008
Thanks.
Well, ten to go for the Shark.
Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
Oh yes...
“Must-win? No. But “important win”? Definitely”
I couldn’t agree more….it felt like this game was a tide turner.
When I saw your “must win” phrase though I wondered to myself…how many games have you posted in the game thread as “must win” this year?
Hardly any? Any at all?
Last year it seemed like there was a “must win” game every couple of weeks…..maybe this is that special season after all if they deliver the “must win” before you have to call for it….
Onwards to Milwaukee….
kiwibob - July 27, 2008
are you from/in New Zealand?

I certainly am…from Auckland…but I’m just about to move to Sydney…

Rich Harden to get his first win as a Cub this week.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
Indeed
And we already can pencil in 10 K’s, if the trends mean anything. I look forward to Braun’s reaction to the filthiness that is Rich Harden. :)
Goodie1969 - July 27, 2008
I’d rather have 6k’s and 7 1/3 innings
Reed's Johnson - July 27, 2008

Now sending it to the a friend option…. genius I just have to decide who I want to scare LOL
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008
I think the Brewers were ripe for an upset vs. the Strohs
They had just come off a very good road trip (OK, GREAT roadtrip) and an emotional 4 game sweep of the Cardinals in new Busch. They have the midweek four gamer with the Cubs and Houston came in for the middle games between those two HUGe series for the Brewers- much like Baltimore did in between the Cubs/Sox games.
So they were ripe. RIPE I say!
Zeke - July 27, 2008
...and due.
So “dew” they were wet!
Zeke - July 27, 2008
I agree look below
Hopefully Brew Traib is runng out of Oat’s
April Cubs 17 – 9 Brew 14-12
May Cubs 18- 11 Brew 13- 16
June Cubs 15 – 12 Brew 16 – 10
July Cubs 11 – 11 Brew 15 – 7 to date
get 3 out of 4 and Cubs get 4 months over 500 + a 3 game lead.
parrotinct - July 27, 2008
MIlwaukee
According to Milwaukee radio the Cubs should not even bother to show up tomorrow and Tuesday. Fans saying this is one thing but the professional sportscasters said this.
I agree the Brewers have the advantage tomorrow but Zambrano and Sheets are a tossup.
puckishcubsfan - July 27, 2008
why bother to play the game tomorrow...WE'RE DOOMED!!!
(smiling as I type)
LAcarl519 - July 27, 2008
I believe that...
...what all the Chicago media was saying about the Marlin’s chances in games 6 and 7 in 03.
There is a reason they actually play the games.
MPH73 - July 28, 2008
That is so true..................
I mentioned this last night I believe in the Brewer thread…...
That Madison sports radio yesterday morning had this thing about how the teams stack up. It was quite informative, until the guy got to the fans. Just totally ripped Cub fans. I thought funny I’ve lived in Madison going on 9 years and in the last month I’ve seen more Brewer stuff than I ever have before. For the most part they are totally arrogant about it.
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008
I have to agree
listening to madison sports radio talk about the Brewers they are arrogant and take every opportunity to put down the Cubs. I actually listen to the Homer out of Milwaukee. He can be what the name says, but is more realistic and constructive with his commentary.
mondello58 - July 27, 2008
It's too bad... I thought they'd be classier than that.
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008
I have never
been a fan of Mike Heller. Just seems to be very arrogant and snotty. The other guy came from work on the Dan Patrick Show when it was on ESPN, so you know he has some bias.
mondello58 - July 27, 2008
Good Point.
I shouldnt be surprised, when your a bandwagoner… random hate can make up for lack of knowledge.
Same w/ most of the Brewers fans that come here. The decent respectable ones arent going to waste their time doing that.
Madison Cub Fan - July 27, 2008

It also pisses me off to no end that someone would possibly even think that, considering the work Al puts into this site.
I look at the other sites within our division, and they do not compare to BCB. They are sloppy, not quickly updated, and nowhere near has comprehensive and fan friendly.
From one Cub fan in the dairy state, you do a hell of a job Al!

Al Yellon - July 28, 2008

I guess this is another example of the dangers of three dimensional thought being presented on a two dimensional platform. Sometimes how it was ‘intended’ isn’t much of a defense.
Please feel free to delete my above comment then and these responses if it’s better to nip it in the bud. Again, I’m really sorry and I’ll try to think more before I post next time.

Aw shucks ballhawk
three dimensions! three dimensions! Al’s saying he would have deleted the diary “had I seen it when it went up”, not your comment. He said he knew you were trying to help.
I liked the speech and appreciated the direction you tried to steer the discussion.

Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
How about radio?
cowsarecool220 - July 27, 2008
You'll have to check the websites of the Chiefs and Cougars.
The Cougars do have a local Chicago-area radio affiliate, so you may be able to hear it over the air. Not sure if either team streams their games.
Al Yellon - July 28, 2008
Most minor-league games
are streamed via milb.com, just like the major league games are.
The difference is that minor league radio broadcasts are free, although you do have to register with milb.com.

Also—-why didnt you change it up and sit in the concourse?
You will have a chance to use the 383 sticker!

Bleachers WERE available...

I thought about sitting in the box seats, but decided to go with the regular spot.

In former Cubs news...
EPat started in LF today for the A’s. 0-3 with 2 walks. Matt Murton was optioned to AAA.
carmen_fanzone - July 27, 2008
What's wrong with Murton.
He proved that he could always hit. Ah well.
Unique - July 27, 2008
"Always" hit?
He was 3-for-30 with one double for the A’s. They gave him a chance to play and he didn’t hit, so they sent him down.
Al Yellon - July 27, 2008
I was being alittle sarcastic.
But this is his worst season as a pro.
Unique - July 27, 2008
Man, have to feel a little bit bad for Murton...
...I have to believe he was looking forward to some MLB playing time in Oakland. I wonder if he’s going to make it in MLB…

He got the playing time...

Still, I’m laying yesterday’s victory at the feet of Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern’s football coach, College Football Hall of Famer, 7th Inning Stretch Singer, and the man who will lead NU to Pasadena (or at least someplace warm for a bowl game) this season!
Go Cats!
(As an aside, if any of you in the Chicago area enjoy college football but don’t have a team, or live too far away from your team, I HIGHLY encourage you to get Northwestern tickets. Season tickets for 7 games are just $228, and 3-game and single-game tickets are on-sale now. There isn’t a bad seat in the house, you see Big Ten football teams, and can even get there on the El. Starters:
Zambrano
Harden
Dempster
Lilly
Marquis
Pen
Closer: Woody
Set up: Marmol
Set up: Shark
Mid Set up:Gaudin
Only in an emergency: Howry
LOOGY Eyre (or Cotts)
Long relief: Marshall
Catchers
1. Soto
2. Hank White
1B
1. Lee
2. Ward
2b
1. DeRosa
2.Fontenot
ss
1. Theriot
2. Cedeno
3b
1. Ramirez
OF
1. Soriano
2. Edmonds
3. Fukudome
4. Johnson
The only up grade I would like to see would be to the pen. If we could unload and upgrade Howry and move shark and Gaudin down in the pen then I would be much more happy.
The O looks solid and unless you can get a serious upgrade over Ward. I don’t see a lot of ways to help improve the Offense.

Does anybody agree with me
that now that Fontenot has become our best Left-Handed pinch-hitter there is no real reason for Ward on this team? I don’t want to be one of the many people in here who want to DFA half the team but it does make since to me to get Hoffpauir up here-he is the same type of player as Ward except young and not broken like Ward appears to be.

Caught the last inning on the radio. I had a softball doubleheader (playoffs) that I couldn’t miss. But my wife and older son went – they were in section 26, row five – club box. They had a great view of all the action and had a fantastic time.
danimal15 - July 27, 2008
this is nitpicky
cause i know sometimes it works to our advantage, but, why is there a basket in CF? there are no seats out there so it really isnt needed. anyone know?
of course, it didnt seem out of place when fontenot hit one into it recently, but jacobs’ first homer today clearly illustrated why that section of basket is evil and unneccessary.
good thing it didnt matter in the end.
circuitclout - July 27, 2008
That's a good question.
When the basket was originally put in, there wasn’t a basket in CF. I can’t remember exactly when they did put it there, but it wasn’t there at least during the 1970’s.
Al Yellon - July 28, 2008
I don't normally like to cherrypick, but
Does anyone else not understand why Lou had Edmonds bunt with no outs with DeRo and Dome coming up after him? With the way he’s been hitting lately, I really don’t understand why he’d be bunting. After Dome’s popup, that out seemed to have a good chance at taking away the comeback (and then of course Wonder Hampster hit the double and it all worked out fine, but still, that seemed like a pretty dumb move to me).
rea5661 - July 27, 2008
That was Jimmy Ballgames bright idea.
No way Lou tells him to do that,
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 27, 2008
And if it'd come in from the bench
Rami would’ve been running.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 28, 2008
O thanks
I didn’t actually see it, so I just assumed Lou called it in. Wonder what Jimmy was thinking.
rea5661 - July 28, 2008
He was thinking he hadn't gotten a hit a while and he could catch the
defense sleeping.
In all honesty if had bunted down the third base line it would have been a easy hit.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 28, 2008
Yes, but
In his entire career (which has been pretty long) he’s succesfully sac bunted a grand total of 10 times
rea5661 - July 28, 2008
in 24 sacrifice bunt attempts, 10 went for sacrifices, 3 for hits
He is also 10 for 22 (.455) when bunting for hits (not sacrificing), once with an RBI.
Most of his successful bunts for hits were to the 3B side.
flachimesa - July 28, 2008
Here's my take on the upcoming series against the Brewers,
If the Cubs split the series, that’s ok, because they will leave Milwaukee with a one game lead.
If they win 3 of 4 (4 of 4 is unrealistic) they will leave Milwaukee being in the drivers seat, and in the Brewers head.
If they lose 3 or 4 (or lose 4 straight) then they will have put themselves in a terrible hole, a hole they may never get out of. Although, making the wildcard is just as good IMO than winning the division. My only worry is that if they do lose 3 of 4, or get swept, they will lose all self-confidence and tumble all the way down to 3rd place.
So, this series will not determine the winner of the division, but it will tell us who has momentum on their side going down the stretch.
Mr W - July 28, 2008
I'm most interested to see
the first two games. The Cub Offense has been bad lately and I want to see how they react to two very good pitchers in a high stress situation. I think that will tell us more about what will happen down the stretch than anything else.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 28, 2008
A little hyperbole, Ken?
A “terrible hole they may never get out of”? Are you serious? It would be, what, two or three games? With 50-something games left, including six against the Brewers?
I don’t want the Cubs to lose, either, but that’s a pretty damn stupid thing to write.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 28, 2008
Gee Bruce...I think you need to take a pepto bismol
Dude was making a statement and did use the word “may.”
I thought what he had to say wasn’t rude or off key. Your response to on the other hand is a different matter all together.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 28, 2008
A ridiculous statement deserves a ridiculous response
Not the first time he’s been the prophet of doom.
Conversely, even if the Cubs win 3 of 4 or sweep, I don’t think that puts them in the drivers’ seat, either. You saw how quickly a 5.5-game lead evaporated over the past two weeks.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 28, 2008
That was my take on the matter,
my OPINION. Opinions are opinions they aren’t dumb or smart, just opinions. That’s tthe problem with you Not Bruce, your opinion is the only one that counts – or “smart” or “realistic.” You are one arrogant prig.
Mr W - July 28, 2008
And in my opinion, I think your opinion is asinine
I guess it’s OK to spew any malarkey that comes into your noggin and just by saying “well, it’s my opinion,” that makes it impervious to criticism.
If you can make a logical argument that isn’t laced with emotion and patently false claims, I can respect opinions with which I don’t necessarily agree. Your post doesn’t pass the smell test, but just by saying “it’s my opinion,” you expect to get a free pass on it. Bullfeathers.
You are one goofy, sad, pathetic dude. But that’s my opinion.
Not Bruce Froemming - July 28, 2008
I flagged you,
I asked Al if your juvenile and arrogant behavior was ok by him. We shall see.
Oh, and by the way this statement, “If you can make a logical argument that isn’t laced with emotion and patently false claims,” places you in the category of a know nothing. An opinion is not an argument. An argument has logical claims and backs them up with evidence. If I was making an argument that would be different, but I was not.
The only thing more pathetic than your ignorance is your ego.
Mr W - July 28, 2008
Now I'm really cowering in fear
My opinion: You’re a frigging freak. Not to mention an idiot of a baseball fan.
Maybe you should work on some cogent “opinions” instead of Chicken Little-type proclamations all the time.
But like I said, that’s my opinion. And according to you, opinions are beyond criticism.
Jeez, you must be a barrel of laughs in your real life. Speaking of which, why don’t you get one?
Not Bruce Froemming - July 28, 2008
Flagged!
Mr W - July 28, 2008
All right, both of you knock it off.
This started as a reasonable exchange. But then it got personal. Stop the personal attacks. Thank you.
Al Yellon - July 28, 2008
Oh, and thanks for admitting
what you post defies logic and evidence. Just as I suspected.

"A ridiculous statement deserves a ridiculous response"
Brilliant
Mapmaker - July 28, 2008
I'm thrilled with today's win, BUT...
I’m not with you, Al, on giving Jason Marquis any credit for “eating up innings.” Frankly, I think he needs to yank his head out of his butt and start finding some corners. Otherwise I don’t want him eating up any innings. He was plain awful today, consistently put us in positions to lose, and if history is any indication today was a preview of what we’ll be getting in the coming months.
Meanwhile, a cabal has formed insisting that Bobby Howry “must go” (even though history indicates he’ll only get better in the coming months).
I, for one, am warming to the idea of sending Marquis to the pen, DFA or trading him, and getting Marshall back in the rotation.
hipster17 - July 28, 2008
Ok DFA Marqius
Who takes marshalls spot in the pen?
Who pitches if one of our starters go down?
Who shouldn’t make DFA recommendations while angry?
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 28, 2008
overall marquis has been pitching well for us lately
look at his last 10 starts or so…..everyone is allowed to have bad games, not to mention he is the 5th starter…..do you really expect the cubs to have a z, harden, dempster everyday?
cubswynn - July 28, 2008
I'm just saying...
I would feel more confident in our chances of winning with Marshall in that fifth slot than Marquis. And yes I think it’s totally reasonable to expect strong pitchers at every point of the rotation. That’s because we have the arms to warrant it this year.
In his starts since June (9 starts) he had the luxury of facing SF twice, LA and SD. Only the Nats have scored fewer runs than those teams.
hipster17 - July 28, 2008
Agreed, but what a good problem to have
“hmm who of these two good starters should we use for our 5th rotation spot?”
Marshall will have some big spot to fill on our team some where down the stretch. Marquis’ll make everyone made and continue to keep us in games.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 28, 2008
More true words have not been spoken on this thread.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 28, 2008
"History" says...
... that Bob Howry gets better long before August. This time, I think that flat fastball has to go.
Al Yellon - July 28, 2008
Well, with Eyre back the lefty issue is somewhat less critical...
And don’t we want to keep the Shark anyway when Woody’s back?
I don’t have all the answers relative to DFA, or many of them even, but my point is Marquis is becoming a liability in the rotation.
hipster17 - July 28, 2008
Marquis has pitch well for a 5th starter.
He take the ball every five days and keeps the Cubs close.
In reality he only gave up 3 bad pitches today and when the wind is blowing out they = homeruns.
But he didn’t lose his cool. He kept the Marlins down for 2 of the next 3 innings which is all you can ask from a fifth stater.
Marshall makes more sense in the pen and is a good back up plan if one of our starters go out.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - July 28, 2008
Guess we see things differently
The great thing about getting Harden and Gaudin is we can have great stuff across all five starters without losing the long-relief value that someone like Marshall brings. Maybe I’m in the minority, but I like our chances with Marshall starting vs. Marquis.
It would hurt not having a strong lefty available for long relief, but the benefit outweighs the cost IMO.
hipster17 - July 28, 2008
I agree
Marquis is a lifetime .500+ pitchers (.525), throwing on average 200+ innings a year, and holding his own as a 5th starter.
It seems that we, as fans, are always looking to replace Marquis, but with whom?
How quickly we forget that Marshall “stunk up the joint” by our standards in his first start (June 24 against the O’s), threw decent in a loss to the ChiSox in his 2nd start, and beat the Cards in a decent effort in his 3rd start.
No matter who the Cubs throw out as their 5th starter, they have to keep us in games and let the offense put the numbers on the board.
flachimesa - July 28, 2008
Eyre isn't "back"...
... because Lou refuses to use him.

Cuban news
This article from Crain’s Chicago Business quotes (anonymous, unfortunately) sources in MLB and “close to the sale” that indicate that it would be very unlikely that MLB would reject Mark Cuban as an owner for the Cubs.
I don’t know how I feel about it yet, but it certainly sounds like Mark Cuban has the best chance of being the next owner of the Cubs. They do quote one guy who has no connection to the sale or MLB saying “I think if he [Cuban] wants it, he will get it.”
Josh Timmers - July 28, 2008
There's nothing in that article...
... that’s new beyond what we have all heard in the last week. It’s a summary, and speculation on the writers’ part.
Cuban is high-profile. The others aren’t. My personal opinion: that’s not a good thing. I don’t want the owner to be the focus, and I believe Cuban would be if he won the bidding.
Get me someone, or a group, that does what it takes to win and sits in the background otherwise.
Al Yellon - July 28, 2008
here's the way i look at it
first of all, what are you doing up at 2:42 Al? i’m impressed…..
second of all the thing that i like about cuban is we know he will do what it takes to win. the other two bidders are too much of a mystery. will the spend the money it takes to win? maybe, maybe not. thats the part i don’t like, but cuban would be a sure thing.
i agree cuban will crave the spotlight, maybe it’ll be a good thing and the focus will be off the 100 year thing
cubswynn - July 28, 2008
I couldnt agree with you more
SouthsideCUBSfan - July 28, 2008
Not sure if any
of you watch CTL on CSN week nights but K.C. Johnson who covers the Bulls was on one night last week. They talked about Cuban buying the Cubs and KC was asked if it would be a good deal. He said he has been around Cuban quite a bit and that he is nothing like he was when he first bought the Mavericks. KC thought it would be great for the Cubs and their fans if Cuban bought them. Maybe Mark has learned what is and is not accepted as an owner of a sports team. Since I’m not from the Chicago area I’m not familiar with all the prospective buyers like some of you are so I have no one to compare Cuban with.
sue369 - July 28, 2008
I disagree
what was new in that article is the people saying Cuban wouldn’t be blocked by MLB.
The rest is all old news, I admit.
Josh Timmers - July 28, 2008
Agree...
...the author did have some sources saying that Cuban would have a legit chance, but we don’t know whether those sources really have the inside take on this thing.
One thing is for sure, with Zell selling the team, MLB owners will be faced with his will/desire to sell his asset to the hghest bidder, and I don’t believe they have dealt with this specific circumstance before.
This is going to get very interesting before it is over, because I doubt anyone outbids Cuban

Mark my words… future Hall of Famer as Closer
Cubster - July 28, 2008
No need to mark your words
I’m sure BCB will still be here in 2035, or whatever year he is inducted (as per your prediction). Just bookmark this URL and you can point it out to everyone then.
JohnM - July 28, 2008
The Cubs
are trying to make him a starter. He’s just relieving right now because that’s where the need is.
But you can still believe his future is in the pen. Others do.
Josh Timmers - July 28, 2008
I betcha a malt cup he's not (j/k)
I like him, too. He’s exciting to watch.
BTW, yesterday was his first save as a professional. Does anyone know if he ever saved a game in college? And can he hit? I read an article yesterday that claims he’s a better CF than a pitcher (comparisons to Ankiel).
flachimesa - July 28, 2008
IBB
Well…. being that Daryl Ward alone had 7 IBB’s while pinch hitting last year, and he has two this year, I would say that we see it a decent amount.
big_lowitzki - July 28, 2008
It's been done over 4000 times since 1956
Ward has been intentionally walked as PH 12 times in his career.
Gotta love Baseball-Reference.com.
flachimesa - July 28, 2008
pitchers
Lou has this thing about having all power pitchers in his bullpen. I think a “funky” reliever (sidearm, submarine, changeup, etc.) type would compliment the hard throwers. When we change pitchers, all of them throw basically the same type speeds. It would be nice to have a few different looks from our guys to confuse the opposition. Thoughts?
KedzieKid - July 28, 2008
It will be critical that the Cubs take some pitches tonight
Sabathia throws that sweeping low slider that guys chase. While pitch count doesn’t seem to apply to Sabathia, being patient and taking some of those might lead to a mistake.
I would prefer not to see Fukudome bat against him, that’s exactly the pitch that baffles him.
