Doesn't this seem like the longest day, waiting for tonight's game?
Here are some photos from yesterday's win:

That Edmonds shot is great
All of the pics have been good, but wow—he got some air on that jump and it captures it well.
Shanghai Badger - July 28, 2008
huh?
the picture has him on the ground. how does that capture well the fact that he got air?
big_lowitzki - July 28, 2008
nevermind...
... I guess you are referring to the climbing the wall pic.
sorry.
big_lowitzki - July 28, 2008
s'alright
Shanghai Badger - July 28, 2008
YES
Today is taking FOREVER.
Archie - July 28, 2008
More fantastic pictures.
Love the picture of Geo and the Shark hugging at home plate.

note that Z is first out to congratulate the kid

Ack, you're right.
sue369 - July 28, 2008
Bromance is alive and well at Wrigley!
JFCubFan - July 28, 2008
Today does seem much longer than even some of those west coast games..
amazing what competing for first will do… Go Cubbies!!
mkcubs21 - July 28, 2008
Wow
I like the effort by Edmonds but he has to be carefull trying to climb the wall, we need him healthy.
Also looking at these pictures it makes me realize how much I like this team and how rooting for them is a lot of fun.
The game tonight has decreased my productivity, it’s all I’m thinking about.
slocs55 - July 28, 2008
One more thing
I’m as excited as everyone for the Shark but I think we should control the expectations a little. Even Lou seemed to get a little giggly about the Shark.
slocs55 - July 28, 2008
Agreed 100%
He had 3 of 4 good innings. He looks like he has the stuff to really help us, but he won’t be replacing anybody beside Howry anytime soon.
nji232 - July 28, 2008
His stuff
He threw 95-96 and had a devastating split finger fastball. I know it’s early but you could make a lot of comparisons to really good relievers like Marmol (fastball, slider), Rivera (fastball, cut fastball), etc.
The trick is reproducing that every time out (which, incidentally, is the difference between Marmol and Rivera).
dr stabbingworth - July 28, 2008
Stuff
I always hear how Javier Vazquez has great stuff but he is a career .500 pitcher. I think the Shark has a chance to be real good bc he has stuff and he seems to thrive on pressure, I’m just saying he has pitched in 2 major league games and people are comparing him to Rivera, seems a little quick.
slocs55 - July 29, 2008
I love these photos as always...
I prefer them to most by the media, because they show the fan’s eye view of the game.
Another thing… I really appreciate this website. It lets me live this season with other Cubs fans, even though I won’t be able to make the pilgrimidge to Wrigley this year. Cheers!
IowaCubs- - July 28, 2008
YES
You took the words out of my mouth.
I’m home on summer vacation and I should be doing things for my classroom, but instead I’m frantically waiting for tonight….
Those pictures are outstanding :)
I didn’t catch sportscenter today yet…did Edmonds catch make it on the top 10 for Sunday?
akbeck98 - July 28, 2008
Yes, it did.
2 or #3, IIRC.Al Yellon - July 28, 2008
#6
And I couldn’t believe it wasn’t higher.
Archie - July 28, 2008
thanks...
for letting me know…I hope to catch it
akbeck98 - July 28, 2008
the shark
hard not to get excited. kid has a super live arm, good looks, smartsm a great pedigree and a winners’s personality.
brian custer - July 28, 2008
Does anyone know why he's called "The Shark"?
I emailed my buddy @ ND and he had no idea.
Dan
dtpollitt - July 28, 2008
bc it's easier to spell than....
samardzija
cubswynn - July 28, 2008
I thought it was because his eyes rolled back into his head when as he was releasing the ball.
santoswoodenlegs - July 28, 2008
That clears things right up, thanks SWL
(sarcasm)
dtpollitt - July 28, 2008
I aim to please...
and I shoot to kill.
santoswoodenlegs - July 28, 2008
Too bad Robert Shaw is dead.
A play-by-play with him calling the Shark’s pitches as Captain Quint would be great!
willie mays hayes' gloves - July 28, 2008
Somtimes the shark throw stikes....sometimes he don't throw strikes..
So, 4 men came to the plate; 1 man got to first and the shark took the rest.
santoswoodenlegs - July 28, 2008
Excellent!
willie mays hayes' gloves - July 28, 2008
We're gonna need a bigger boat.
daver - July 28, 2008
Cage goes in the water, you go in the water. Shark's in the water. Our shark.
willie mays hayes' gloves - July 28, 2008
You gonna take that bat? You gonna
go to bat agaist the shark? Our shark?
Farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu, you ladies of Spain. For we’ve received orders for to sail back to Boston. And so nevermore shall we see you again.

Becuz he eats Marlins for lunch
Cubster - July 28, 2008
really?
I thought it was the way he ripped the leg off that lady in the bikini in the fourth row.
drewishdrewid - July 28, 2008
I think we need to figure this out...
...we can’t just keep calling the guy “The Shark” if we have no idea what the hell it means?!!
Dan
dtpollitt - July 28, 2008
sure we can.
drewishdrewid - July 28, 2008
LOL
dtpollitt - July 28, 2008
Why not?
daver - July 28, 2008
It works for him.
sue369 - July 28, 2008
the shark
‘cause samardzija sorta kinda sounds like shark. plus his face has pointed, narrow features. he looks like a shark. sort of…
brian custer - July 28, 2008
That's it?
Man, that’s a weak reasoning.
Dan
dtpollitt - July 28, 2008
The official answer from the Shark himself:
Scholl: Where did you get your nickname – Shark?
Samardzija: It all started my freshman year. I was new on the baseball team. I showed up, didn’t know anyone. I was a talking to (former Irish pitcher Chris) Niesel, and out of nowhere they called me `Shark’ because they said I looked like the shark on Finding Nemo. It started during a game while I was pitching and they yelled at me from the dugout. Then Coach (Paul) Mainieri picked it up and it just snowballed from there. I guess I look like a shark.
Zeke - July 28, 2008
LOL, the shark from Finding Nemo. That's awesome.
Could you specify the source you got this from? Just curious.
daver - July 28, 2008

Name's Bruce.
Archie - July 28, 2008
Let's hope the Cubs' Shark...
...has a little more success on the mound than the shark in this movie had in catching Ariel and Flounder.
What?! I’m a Dad. I’ve seen it a few times.
daver - July 28, 2008
I'm a dad too...
and Ariel and Flounder were persued by a different shark

santoswoodenlegs - July 28, 2008
Really? Aww, man. I stand corrected then.
I hope Disney doesn’t kick me out of the Princess Fan Club for this.
daver - July 28, 2008
santoswoodenlegs - July 28, 2008
Not me
Lou In Blue - July 28, 2008
This is why I hate Orlando and all things Disney
Emelie - July 28, 2008
YIKES!
that looks like an attempted scalping
brian custer - July 28, 2008
Yeah, someone needs to...
...put some pressure on that wound and get him to an ER.
daver - July 28, 2008
nice find there, SWL
This is also Shark Week on Discovery and they have a feature where you can ‘Shark Yourself”
here
JCD - July 28, 2008
I thought
you were going to “shark” him. Doesn’t look any different.
:P
drewishdrewid - July 28, 2008
Alrighty then
sue369 - July 28, 2008
LOL I REST MY CASE, THANK YOU TO ALL
dtpollitt - July 28, 2008
great photos, as always
The ball in the Edmonds wall climb photo makes it.
These shots are best blown up. Don’t forget to click on each one; you’ll see something you missed in the smaller version.
David, thanks for posting these. I miss them when you can’t make it to a game.
santo4hof - July 28, 2008
outside the base path?
was fontenot technically outside the base path when he ran through the grass to avoid the tag? could the umps have called him out?
cubbiefanTN - July 28, 2008
I don't remember him
being off the dirt at all.
drewishdrewid - July 28, 2008
He was on the grass for about 4 steps
I thought about that when they ran the replay.
santo4hof - July 28, 2008
is the grass considered
out of the base path?
cubbiefanTN - July 28, 2008
According to Joe Morgan...a player dictate his own base path.
santoswoodenlegs - July 28, 2008
no
as you can see in the photo, the grass is only like foot inside the line between 2nd and 3rd. the runner gets 3 feet on either side of his path between the bases, or about an arms length. umps are taught to judge it thusly: if the defender has the ball in the middle of the basebath, and the runner runs around the defenders outstretched arm, he is more than 3 feet out of the basepath and out.
joeschmitt - July 28, 2008
The basepath thing is only an issue...
if running outside the bases is deemed to be advantageous in avoiding the out (i.e., if you do it to avoid being tagged). The ump decided either that Fontenot wasn’t out of the baseline or that his being out of the baseline didn’t affect the play.
For a comparison, remember that guys are out of the baseline every time they round a base heading for the next base, but no one ever says anything.
SouthernCub - July 28, 2008
Well stated and absolutely correct. The Morgan comment is technically correct
also. It’s a judgement call by the ump.
willie mays hayes' gloves - July 28, 2008
Is tonight's game only on CSN?
So if I wanna catch it, I’ll have to go to a sports bar that has the MLB package? I’m in Kansas, so I’m not gonna get anything locally…
Dan
dtpollitt - July 28, 2008
Correct.
Al Yellon - July 28, 2008
Kudos to whoever takes these pictures
They are always VERY cool
cubswynn - July 28, 2008
David Sameshima, BCB Photographer
It’s on the front page.
santoswoodenlegs - July 28, 2008
Based on logic posted above he could be called "The Shark"?
MikeOxbyg - July 28, 2008
If that's what his momma calls him.
daver - July 28, 2008
Yes they are!
Thanks for taking them and posting them.
Itchy - July 28, 2008
...and thanks for getting my right shoulder and the back of my head into the picture of Edmonds leaping. Maybe my face next time?
hip2bsquare - July 28, 2008
IS IT GAMETIME YET?
?
Lou In Blue - July 28, 2008
Question: If we paly .500 remainder of the season... We make Playoffs?
I ask becuz we have only been playing .500 for the past month or so
Cubster - July 28, 2008
remember..its also about how the other teams perform in that period
cubsnlinux - July 28, 2008
I know...
but we came out with suc a great start and now it seems we can only muster .500 ball… I would like to get on a win streak of some sort…. hope it starts today!!!
Cubster - July 28, 2008
Well....we've already won 1 in a row.
santoswoodenlegs - July 28, 2008
LOL..that's true though
cubsnlinux - July 28, 2008
as you said..we were playing great and the brewers at one point were tied for last place...
We are going through a very bad stretch and the brewers are really hot. Even then we lead them by a game. Things can get and trust me they will get flip flopped very quickly.
cubsnlinux - July 28, 2008
Playing .500 for the rest of the season would put them at 89.5-72.5
which is better than last year’s 87-75.
I still project 94-96 wins and a Central Division title. From there, who knows? Have to get there first.
Let’s start tonight with a Brewer spanking.
flachimesa - July 28, 2008
oops, last year's 85-77 record
flachimesa - July 28, 2008
Gulp...I actually predicted 89 wins going into the season.
I’m thinking they may have have to do a little better than that to get past the Brewers now.
daver - July 28, 2008
Field of Dreams
In that first photo Edmonds looks like he’s disappearing into the ivy a la Field of Dreams. “Help me, I’m melting!”
