I think they're at the point where they need to start pitching him
in no pressure situations-either when the Cubs are getting blown out or they’re up by enough runs that he can’t do too much damage-let him try to work out his problems that way
Which is very bad news for the Cubs. Outside of Kerry Wood our bullpen is mediocre to lousy. Jim Hendry is definitely going to be in the market for a bullpen arm (or two). And he no doubt will have to significantly overpay.
We split on the road, just like you are supposed to. We lost to two good pitchers. It sucks that we had a good chance today that didn’t work out, but at least the Cards/Brew Crew are helping us out.
Let’s go get the Cards in St.L and call it good. :)
They never play well on the coast, historically. They usually fare better in SF than LA or SD. A split is exactly what I expected. With a depleted roster, what the hell more do you want? Some of the injured are now back—you expect them to be 100%?
Be realistic. The team has the best record in the NL. They’ve lost one game off the lead. This team is treading water, and that’s to be expected right now.
2 of 3 is really necessary in St. Louis. Playing .500 ball against a bad team is fine, under these circumstances—but those 2 kid pitchers threw good games for the Giants.
Try to actually be reasonable, you people. Are you all new here? Are you all bandwagoners?
This is a long season, everyone goes through sections of the season where nothing seems to go right. The fans go ballistic, but the manager and players know it happens every season.
Now if they were playing like this late in August, then I sttart to worry.
and jsut lost two to one of the worst home teams in all of baseball. Injuries or not, a great team should be playing better by now. This slump is going on two weeks
if at the end of the season the Cubs win the division by 6 games you will look back on this and laugh at how silly it was to get so worked up over something like this. Moreover, if we win the pennant, and, God willing, the World Series, you will have absolutely no memory of thiis whatsoever!! So take heart. Lets see what we can do with those lousy Cards this weekend.
But it doesn’t make this any easier right now. I’ve seen some horrifying things in my lifetime as a Cub fan and it’s not easy to stay optimistic, Remember the Marlins series late last year. Devastating and the next thing you know, the Cubs win the division. Sometimes I think the season is too long (especially when the Cubs are leading the division!)
not a “GREAT” one. With all of the injuries - WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE EXPECT? It’s amazing to me that they have been able to maintain. That’s a great sign for when this team is healthy. Look at the Damn Dodgers - half their team is on the DL, it seems. They are still below .500.
Calm down. Did you expect no slumps, no injuries? If not, you haven’t a clue about the ups and downs of a season. As Al pointed out—look what the Jays did to Boston! Shit happens.
Find some Xanax, or go watch Arena Football. Maybe that won’t upset so many of you here.
I'm all for our newfound patience at the plate, but I think sometimes it hamstrings us
when you’ve got a good pitcher throwing strikes. Patience does not equal looking at fastballs right down the middle. I think that’s led to this team simply not looking very aggressive at times, especially on the road.
I disagree with sitting Carlos. I think Lou needs to continue to use him until he gets his confidence back. If Lou gives up on him now, we may never get the “White Castle” back.
He’s lost a little confidence, just keep bringing him in, eventually it will all return. Not only that, we get to show the Cardinals what we’re made of this weekend.
With the exception of the HR to Quentin, which was a fluke more than anything, he’s been getting beat when behind in the count and the hitters can sit high fastball. He’s throwing his slider too much early in the count and guys have started taking pitches in the hope he falls behind. If he’s not getting called strikes with his slider, he’s falling behind and his fastball is getting hit. All he has to do is make the adjustment and get ahead with his fastball and wipe them away with his slider. His slider is so filthy that he has fallen into the rut that a lot of guys with one outstanding pitch do and that is falling in love with it. Pitch off his fastball and wipe guys out with the slider and before long, he’ll be dominating again. He’s too good not too. No different than the Ramirez hitting slide.
and the return of some hitters didn’t seem to provide much of a consistent spark. Is tomorrow a must win? I don’t know but I can tell you it could really hurt if Z gets shelled.
was always pretty mild mannered, until we bought fireworks for the 4th. he turned into CRAZY man. We almost blew up his dad’s truck once. That was the last time we did fireworks in his driveway
There seems to be a disagreement between the BFO and the Foreign Service
According to a survey by the British Foreign Office among its diplomatic staff, the most difficult language to learn for adult English speakers is Hungarian, followed by Japanese. This survey naturally included only languages that are used in diplomatic relations and does not rule out the possibility of other languages that are even more difficult to learn.
“The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) of the US Department of State has compiled approximate learning expectations for a number of languages”[2]. Of the 70 languages analyzed, the 5 most difficult languages to reach proficiency in speaking and proficiency in reading (for native English speakers who already know other languages), requiring 88 weeks, are: “Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean”, with Japanese being the most difficult.
In the Defense Language Institute, Korean is seen as the hardest of the Category IV languages, which are Arabic, Chinese, and Korean. “Right now only 8 Languages are being taught (for Navy). Cat IV: Arabic, Chinese, Korean. Cat III: Persian, Serb-Croatian, Hebrew, Russian. Cat I: Spanish. ...Korean is the hardest language here [Navy], apparently it is 75 weeks long now, and they are trying to make it a Cat V language.”[1]
If Marmol has any type of injury, and Rothschild and Pinella know of it, and they keep using him anyway, the pillory they will receive in the Chicago media and Cub fandoom, will be well deserved!
No, I just think he has lost a little confidence, that’s all.
A little over a week ago Arroyo set a modern MLB record giving up 11 runs IN THE FIRST INNING. Tony left Marquis in a game in 06 and I think he gave up roughly 10 runs. He was not a happy camper. I think evil Tony did have a reasonable reason for doing it tonight though needing to save the BP.
The bad: 1. Marmol is starting to become a genuine concern 2. Dome is fighting it at the plate 3. Gallagher seems to be struggling a bit more now that scouts have seen him. That could mean that his stuff isn’t as good as we think. 4. We got 3 runs in 6 innings off of a guy with a 2.49 ERA, and we got blown out. 5. We are still having sloppy innings defensively.
The good: 1. DeRo is starting to rediscover the RCF gap and get his power stroke back 2. Cotts pitched pretty well 3. RJ looks like he is ready to go 4. DLee is hot 5. Edmonds had a good series 6. Murton is getting some hits with sporadic ABs 7. Howry seems to be back 8. Woody is right on
The best: 1. July 4th weekend against our red-feathered friends! Let’s get 2 of 3!
I would love to see Hendry make a REASONABLE offer to the Dodgers for Derek Lowe. Imagine, a sinkerball pitcher in Wrigley? He would be a great addition.
...you do realize that the infield grass isn’t fifteen inches long anymore and our infield defense, particularly up the middle, is questionable. That sinkerballer-in-Wrigley theory isn’t quite as appropriate as it used to be.
I’m cat sitting this weekend and he had jumped up underneath one of our stairways and I was trying to get him down when his back claw caught me on my upper lip. It hurts. :-(

Which is very bad news for the Cubs. Outside of Kerry Wood our bullpen is mediocre to lousy. Jim Hendry is definitely going to be in the market for a bullpen arm (or two). And he no doubt will have to significantly overpay.

Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
We can make that road record a lot better in St.L this weekend. ;)
slcathena - July 3, 2008
that would be a good thing
I’d be happy with 2 of 3, but maybe StL pitching will start to get to it’s true level and the Cubs can get 3.
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
That would be sweet.
And did anyone think we’d go 15 days without Z and not lose more than a game to either the Crew or the Cards?
I didn’t.

The deal with Marmol
No different than the Ramirez hitting slide.
krummy12 - July 3, 2008
A Sound Explanation
He might even be overthrowing the slider, which is causing it to sail outside. Then he has to throw a “get me over” fastball and KAPOW!
Just hoping it’s a fixable mechanical flaw and not another Mark Prior or Rich Hill scenario.

A Day Before The Cusp
Mine is 1-18 which I think is a day before the Capricorn/Aquarius cusp.
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
wow... you just threw a hanging curve ball
and I’m letting it go
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
that explains why i like you both
non scorpios have a tendency to be weird.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
but since I'm on the cusp
I’m only normal sometimes
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
well. my version of normal is a little differnt
so… who knows! ;-)
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
I just looked up last years playoff schedule
October 21th the game 7 of ALCS 3 days away from WS. So if you are celelbrating baseball on your bday….. wow.
Madison Cub Fan - July 3, 2008

I share my b-day with Johnny Carson (wonder if hbc knows who that is) and Pele

and yet worried about hard languages...
According to the British Foreign Office, btw, they are wrong. Hungarian is the 2nd hardest, with Tabassaran in 1st and Japanese in 3rd. :P
slcathena - July 3, 2008
i turned it on after that part
but calling yadier… yaddie… is weird. :-P
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
Here in Wisconsin
We call him, “Yah dere, eh!”
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
sad but true
Madison Cub Fan - July 3, 2008
Where is Mandarin?
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
Cat I: Spanish. ...Korean is the hardest language here [Navy], apparently it is 75 weeks long now, and they are trying to make it a Cat V language.”[1]
slcathena - July 3, 2008
Interesting!
Xie xie ni!
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
Where Did Pig Latin Place?
Or how about jive?
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
considering these are diplomatic offices
I don’t think they are concerned with either, sadly. ;)
slcathena - July 3, 2008
Russian Is Tough
I thought I once read where it was the hardest language to learn.
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
my college roommate
was taking russian at the same time i was taking latin.
it was the most nerdy dorm room around.
she was really good at russian.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
a buddy of mine took Russian
and when someone else years later jokingly referred to her mother as a “sutka”, I knew what it meant…
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008

CaliCub - July 3, 2008

Asking The TV Viewers
Did Marmol look OK out there? Specifically, did he appear at all to be laboring or showing any signs of (please God no) being hurt?
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
I'll tell you what CalCub,
If Marmol has any type of injury, and Rothschild and Pinella know of it, and they keep using him anyway, the pillory they will receive in the Chicago media and Cub fandoom, will be well deserved!
No, I just think he has lost a little confidence, that’s all.
Mr W - July 3, 2008
I Hope Not, Either
Acutally I’m more worried that Marmol would be the one not to say anything if – and again this is total speculation – his arm hurts.
CaliCub - July 3, 2008
11-0 Mets on Delgado HR
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
same pitcher?
Madison Cub Fan - July 3, 2008
yep. taking one for the team
6th inning
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
Wow
I can’t remember seeing that
Mapmaker - July 3, 2008
big series coming up
for both of us.
is this gonna boggs’ last inning?
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
have to think so
good way to alienate the whole staff if not
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
Um you might ask Arroyo or Marquis
A little over a week ago Arroyo set a modern MLB record giving up 11 runs IN THE FIRST INNING. Tony left Marquis in a game in 06 and I think he gave up roughly 10 runs. He was not a happy camper. I think evil Tony did have a reasonable reason for doing it tonight though
needing to save the BP.
Doggie Stalker - July 3, 2008
so it might as well be 1-0
Madison Cub Fan - July 3, 2008
We need a win tomorrow
I don’t like the pitching match-ups Saturday and Sunday. And the Brewers get the Pirates at home
Things could look really different on Monday
Mapmaker - July 3, 2008
what are the match ups for the whole series?
Link?

Mapmaker - July 3, 2008
thanks! :)
slcathena - July 3, 2008
So. Since I missed most of our game
who all pitched? Who came in after Gally?
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
Ascanio...Marmol (gave up 3 run HR to AURILLA (!))...Cotts...Lieber
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
I dind't think LIeber would pitch
with Z coming off the DL and us not sure exactly what he’s going to have… you’d think you’d save your long man… right?
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
I'd have brought him in when it was 4-3, actually
Not like Lou uses him for more than an inning anyway.
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
I guess
Did they all only go 1 inning? or what?
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
Ascaino went 1+, Marmol 0, Cotts 1, Liebs 1
I think…had gotten a phone call from China
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
phone call
from my Mexican friend…moving to Singapore
not trying to impress anyone, I just think that sounds funny
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
that does sound funny
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
thanks
i was too lazy to look it up. figured asking might work just as well.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
shore
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
thanks!
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
So would have I.
This game is totally different if Ascanio and marmol don’t give it up.
slcathena - July 3, 2008
Ascanio got in trouble,
Marmol came in with runners at the corners, no outs threw two wide sliders and and then served up a pitch chest high for a 3 run homer. :(
slcathena - July 3, 2008
My $0.03
The bad:
1. Marmol is starting to become a genuine concern
2. Dome is fighting it at the plate
The good:
1. DeRo is starting to rediscover the RCF gap and get his power stroke back
2. Cotts pitched pretty well
3. RJ looks like he is ready to go
4. DLee is hot
5. Edmonds had a good series
6. Murton is getting some hits with sporadic ABs
7. Howry seems to be back
8. Woody is right on
The best:
1. July 4th weekend against our red-feathered friends! Let’s get 2 of 3!
DeRoMyHero - July 3, 2008
Howry has looked very good lately
Mapmaker - July 3, 2008
I agree DLee is hot

twss
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
Yeah I did
madeindetroit - July 3, 2008
He's been money lately.
If he keeps that up and we get Sori back, no one will touch us in the second half.
slcathena - July 3, 2008
IMHO
derrek is always hot.
“ahem”
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
+1,0000,000
madeindetroit - July 3, 2008
You know what I would like to see?
I would love to see Hendry make a REASONABLE offer to the Dodgers for Derek Lowe. Imagine, a sinkerball pitcher in Wrigley? He would be a great addition.
Mr W - July 3, 2008
well, marquis and z are both sinkerballers
but i imagine if lowe becomes available, hendry would go for it.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
That's fine but...
...you do realize that the infield grass isn’t fifteen inches long anymore and our infield defense, particularly up the middle, is questionable. That sinkerballer-in-Wrigley theory isn’t quite as appropriate as it used to be.
krummy12 - July 3, 2008
11-1 Mets end of 6.
I’m out, kids. Time to go meet some friends for an adult beverage.
Cue mcf, hbc disbelief in 10…9…8..
Shanghai Badger - July 3, 2008
i'll suspend my disbelief
just to say good bye!
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
doesnt matter anyways. not going thru pitchers plus they are gonna lose.
Madison Cub Fan - July 3, 2008

halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
I've misssed Z so much!
And RJ and RAMI!!!!!!!
slcathena - July 3, 2008

i saw his double, but how did he do in the field and stuff?
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
He looked okay.
No errors, just coming back. Hard to evaluate.
slcathena - July 3, 2008
So he was moving okay?
Thats really all I was worried about. Good to see. :-)
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
to see reed johnson back today also
Madison Cub Fan - July 3, 2008
I'm sticking it out until the 7th or so at least,
I don’t trust those dirty birds to not come back.
slcathena - July 3, 2008
i was thinking the same thing
i don’t trust the mets not to gag completely
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
Exactly.
They are SO bad. OMG. The last few days have been like WOAH.
slcathena - July 3, 2008
yeah.
they aren’t very good.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
Soto had a HORRID day struck out three times and made an error
Madison Cub Fan - July 3, 2008
ouch
i was still here when the E happened. sounded like a really tricky play.
poor guy.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
That error was sad.
No one could have seen the ball in that.
slcathena - July 3, 2008
thats only his 3rd of the season
Madison Cub Fan - July 3, 2008
he's been unbelievably good
soto has.
speaking of: are you still wanting to do that blog you were talking about?
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008
I'd like to.
but the only blogging I’ve ever done is myspace variety. So although I’d like to do it, I need it to be a group effort
Madison Cub Fan - July 3, 2008

It could be interesting. I haven’t used blogger for a while but if you need a spot writer/designer I can help.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 3, 2008

The bullpen hasn’t been too reliable lately.
