• Fantastic return to form by Big Z. Efficient and in control of his emotions. Really buckled down with runners on base and got out of things unscathed – with runners on 1st and 2nd with one out in the 6th, he retires Glaus on an infield pop-up and gets Duncan on a roller to short.
• Another dropped throw by Theriot in the 3rd. Sadly this isn’t the first time Ryan’s done this. Sure hope a veteran SS with a trusty glove who can be used as a late-inning defensive replacement is part of Hendry’s shopping list.
• Good to see HRs as part of the Cub arsenal tonight (Dome, Soto). Puts the Cubs on pace for 180 on the season.
• Fukudome with two Ks tonight. On pace for approximately 120 this year. Not to be racist but I always thought Japanese players didn’t strike out that much?
• Crappy top of the 6th. ARam should lay off those low-and-away pitches because he either Ks or pulls weak grounders to the left side. Edmonds missed a very hittable pitch for strike three. Hard to say whether or not Soto should’ve stayed on first or taken off immediately once the ball got away from Molina. Extra runs would’ve been nice there.
• Good set-up work by Howry and Cotts, even with the solo HR to Pujols.
• Edmonds Ks three times tonight. Need him to have a better Saturday and Sunday!
• Soto goes 3-3. Would be neat if he ends up the starting C in the All-Star Game.
• Cards are a good defensive club. I wonder if they take infield before every game? Most clubs don’t these days so it would give them an edge if they do.
• Great clutch save by Woody, protecting a one-run lead. Looking less and less jittery and more and more in total control.
• Cubs win! Huge victory tonight because the worst that can happen is the Cubs come home still in 1st place after this weekend.
If what I said makes me racist, I apologize. I just meant that the style of play in the Japan League was contact over striking out. So it’s surprising to see Dome racking up so many Ks – however if he was the same way with Chunichi then so be it.
...May 1st through yesterday, he was hitting .300/.384/.329, for a .713 OPS or an 89 OPS+. I guess you can say he hasn’t been Willie Bloomquist bad, or Brian Bixler bad. But it’s not exactly impressive.
People say “no power” like it just means he’s not a 25 home run guy or something. It goes much deeper than that.
IMO, he’s not an everyday SS. But, what would you do if you were Jim Hendry? We have a limited number of A and B prospects. We may need another SP. We will need another RP if we can’t get Marmol straightened out. We need to have something in reserve in case we get an injury in July. Would a trade for a SS be a priority for you? If so, who would you target?
Would you prefer Cedeno? DeRo at SS/Fontenot vs. RHP?
You’re a better stat geek than I am, but isn’t it true that OPS, while an improvement over BA as the “one number of hitting” is not all that great because it overvalues slugging percentage? I’ve heard one analysis claim that OBP is about 1.7 times as important as slugging in terms of scoring runs, and I’ve heard people say the ratio is as high as 3. A Google search yields this: http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:xjw4DH0ViFcJ:www.retrosheet.org/Research/PankinM/Pankin-sabr36.pdf+relative+importance+of+obp+and+slugging&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=us&client=firefox-a
Which makes the point that I was about to make, that on a high-scoring team like this year’s Cubbies extra points of OBP are worth more than extra points of slugging by even more than usual.
Furthermore, a player that gets on base a lot and doesn’t have much power can hit in a lineup position that suits his strengths and weaknesses. The Cubs have tons of power; they lead the NL in slugging pct, last I checked. If Theriot can sustain a .384 OBP (not 100% certain) and he’s used intelligently WRT lineup position and baserunning activity, that’s not bad for a guy that doesn’t cost much money.
Now he has run into a lot of outs this year. And his defense isn’t that good. So overall the Cubs might be able to find someone better. But they’d have to pay for that guy in salary or in players. They’d have to find someone whose purchase/rental price is reasonable given their probably modest improvement in production over the remaining season (insert definition of reasonable here; you have to weigh factors such as prospect development vs. instant production, and estimate the future value of those prospects, all of which is subject to differences of opinion).
to the Giants series to end the first half, and good news. Cubs avoid Lincecum. 2 of 3 here, then 5 of 6 on the homestand to get to the break. Let it be so.
Crazy 18-inning, high scoring game between the Mets and Braves that ended at 3:30am. Then they let off fireworks at 4am and freaked out the whole city!
At around 2 a.m., in the 17th inning, Atlanta relief pitcher Rick Camp hit a two-out, game-tying solo home run, his first and only MLB homer. As the portly Camp slowly rounded the bases with a big grin on his bearded face, the TV announcer yelled, “Rick Camp! Rick Camp! I don’t believe it. That certifies this as the wackiest, wildest, most improbable game in history!”
I’m from your neck of the woods, up in Victoria. Ever been here? I was in Seattle for Father’s Day – saw the M’s and Nationals…wow, lots of suckatude there!
It was really cold this morning, but its warm and sunny ( for mid winter) now. Im in Melbourne down South where it can get down to 40 on bitter mornings.
Never got a chance. I was only in Melboune for a couple of days.
Saw Phantom of the Opera there. I have spent mst of my time in the Sydney area. Darling Harbor and Circular Quay were kind of neat. King’s cross was a madhouse. Lots of hookers.
has morphed from Junkie infested madhouse, to a hip junkie infested madhouse by virtue of new cool bars popping up in it. The hookers have been there since the 30’s alledgedly. There obviosly getting a bit old for the caper now you’d think!
Yeah, it's quite the tourist trap. I was surprised at how big the legalized
sports betting is in your country. You couldn’t turn around without seeing an ad about it. Sports in general is pretty big too. You guys really like your rugby league and footy. Aussie jock are real animals. They put their bodies on the line every match and leave it all on the field.
Sport is semi religious here. I am an ex Aussie Rules player and have had more than a dozen operations to keep on the field….and I love to punt on the races rugby footy ect. The reason I became Cubbie obsessed was I needed a team and a sport to follow whn i lived in the US and Canada. Then I went to the shrine of Wrigley and the matter was settled.
I loved to watch the footy matches on TV over there. The fans
are so passionate about there teams. I can see why you would end up with a lot of injuries in that game. Our guys wear full pads and they still end up getting beat to hell.
First!!!!
Go CUBBIES!!!

just wait
Till he strikes out once or drops a ball in the OF.
All the silly talk will rush back in.
patron - July 4, 2008
By next Sunday
By the time the Cubs head to the break they will be at full strength.
And then I think Hendry will pull off a move or two or three (one major and two medium ones)
puckishcubsfan - July 4, 2008
Post-Game Notes
CaliCub - July 4, 2008
Re: Dome & J-ed
all patient hitters strike out. You take pitches and you’re going to get called 3rds. I’m not worried.
I don’t think Edmonds is going to light it up against the Cards, they know him too well, especially w/ him reverting to his old batting stance.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 4, 2008
I goota say
Not to be a racist is my favorite phrase. Right next to Jews are some of my best friends.
Also, I think Fuku struck out 100+ time is Japan too.
By veteran back up SS do you want Nefi, A-gone, or that back up shortstop under Dusty, whose name escapes me?
patron - July 4, 2008
Better Than That
My family’s roots ARE Jewish!
If what I said makes me racist, I apologize. I just meant that the style of play in the Japan League was contact over striking out. So it’s surprising to see Dome racking up so many Ks – however if he was the same way with Chunichi then so be it.
CaliCub - July 4, 2008
When you take as many pitches as Dome does,
you’re bound to strike out.
DeRo, early in his career, was extremely tough to fan. That’s because he swung at the first fastball he saw. Every time, any location.
DeRoMyHero - July 4, 2008
Backup SS
I’d mention his name but Al would scream bloody murder.
CaliCub - July 4, 2008
What's wrong with Ronny coming in the late innings?
Or even starting more if and when Theriot comes back down to earth.
Bump Bailey - July 4, 2008
Ronny Has Brain Farts
that, like Theriot’s limited range and dropping of throws, could bite the Cubs in the tuchus at the wrong time.
CaliCub - July 5, 2008
Great stuff
And +infinity on the infield practice. A lost art
cocknfire - July 4, 2008
Backup shortstop?
Am I seriously the only person that’s noticed how Theriot stopped hitting when May 1st rolled around?
cwyers - July 4, 2008
Not sure what you mean...
.308/.407/.337 in May
.309/.369/.340 in June
Admittedly, no power. Certainly, not much of a glove. (I still think that DeRo is a better SS, but that’s just me…)
But, he hasn’t been an OBP black hole or anything…
DeRoMyHero - July 4, 2008
Well...
...May 1st through yesterday, he was hitting .300/.384/.329, for a .713 OPS or an 89 OPS+. I guess you can say he hasn’t been Willie Bloomquist bad, or Brian Bixler bad. But it’s not exactly impressive.
People say “no power” like it just means he’s not a 25 home run guy or something. It goes much deeper than that.
cwyers - July 4, 2008
Agreed.
RHP?
DeRoMyHero - July 4, 2008
Power... 'eh

Then there’s Dayn Perry, Rob Neyer, Joe Morgan…
CaliCub - July 4, 2008
Neyer has no love for the Cards.
He grew up a Royals fan, IIRC.

CaliCub - July 4, 2008

What do they know
heck Morgan may have been a good second baseman but he doesn’t know his ass from his nose. And it isn’t his nose that is running.

Crazy 18-inning, high scoring game between the Mets and Braves that ended at 3:30am. Then they let off fireworks at 4am and freaked out the whole city!
CaliCub - July 4, 2008
that is hilarious
someone would die if they set off fireworks at 4am near me
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 4, 2008
July 4, 1985 Braves vs, Mets
At around 2 a.m., in the 17th inning, Atlanta relief pitcher Rick Camp hit a two-out, game-tying solo home run, his first and only MLB homer. As the portly Camp slowly rounded the bases with a big grin on his bearded face, the TV announcer yelled, “Rick Camp! Rick Camp! I don’t believe it. That certifies this as the wackiest, wildest, most improbable game in history!”

Cold Down In Oz?
Do you guys get snow during your “winter” or just rain?
CaliCub - July 4, 2008
I've been to Sydney a
few times in the winter. No snow just rain. Temp never got much below 50 deg.
willie mays hayes' gloves - July 4, 2008
that shouldn't count as winter
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 4, 2008
Reminded me of northern and central california. Not
too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter.
willie mays hayes' gloves - July 4, 2008
Funnily enough
It was really cold this morning, but its warm and sunny ( for mid winter) now.
Im in Melbourne down South where it can get down to 40 on bitter mornings.
Aussie Cub - July 4, 2008
Got up to the Blue mountains near Sydney. It can get
pretty chilly up there in the morning too.
willie mays hayes' gloves - July 4, 2008
Oh...and never snows in any city here
I didn’t see snow until I lived in London and picked it up and threw it about….and got frostbite for my nieve stupidity

Speaking of Kukla, Fran and Ollie
Fran was part greater of “Cubs Nation.”. She did TV promos for Wrigley LadiesDays games.
sweetswinger - July 4, 2008
Melbourne is a beautiful city. A lot more
organized than Sydney. The streets in Sydney remind me of spaghetti.
willie mays hayes' gloves - July 4, 2008
Too true
Sydney= LA. Too many wannabe film stars and fakes.
The traffic is dire in both as well.
Our beers better too most importantly : )
Aussie Cub - July 4, 2008
Great beaches in sydney though. Manley, Bondi, Coogi and all
topless too. What a great place to hang out. I really miss it!
willie mays hayes' gloves - July 4, 2008
The whole country
is topless (not that Ive noticed ; ) )
Yeah, their climate and beaches in Sydney are better, but the beaches down the West Coast of Victoria are far far better…did you go down the Ocean Rd?
Aussie Cub - July 4, 2008
Never got a chance. I was only in Melboune for a couple of days.
Saw Phantom of the Opera there. I have spent mst of my time in the Sydney area. Darling Harbor and Circular Quay were kind of neat. King’s cross was a madhouse. Lots of hookers.
willie mays hayes' gloves - July 4, 2008
The Cross
has morphed from Junkie infested madhouse, to a hip junkie infested madhouse by virtue of new cool bars popping up in it.
The hookers have been there since the 30’s alledgedly.
There obviosly getting a bit old for the caper now you’d think!
Aussie Cub - July 4, 2008
Yeah, it's quite the tourist trap. I was surprised at how big the legalized
sports betting is in your country. You couldn’t turn around without seeing an ad about it. Sports in general is pretty big too. You guys really like your rugby league and footy. Aussie jock are real animals. They put their bodies on the line every match and leave it all on the field.
willie mays hayes' gloves - July 4, 2008
Well spotted!
Aussie Cub - July 4, 2008
I loved to watch the footy matches on TV over there. The fans
are so passionate about there teams. I can see why you would end up with a lot of injuries in that game. Our guys wear full pads and they still end up getting beat to hell.
willie mays hayes' gloves - July 4, 2008
Rockies pull it out 18-17.
Something tells me that the fireworks show will be anti-climactic.
I guess the Rox can put the loss to the Cubs behind them now.
