putting an extra grind on a starting player by having him accommodate a bench player? If that grind costs DeRo 5 starts per season for 15 points of OPS can you justify what Lou is doing?
his worst month was May, which was also when he moved the most. This year, his June wasn’t so good, and he was moving more with Sori out. I’m more worried about the second half.
Last year, he had a great Sept., but he played almost exclusively 2B.
Stonehenge, Bath, and London about twenty minutes ago, and that included a quick stop for Chinese take-out in my little village. Now I have the Cubs game on AFN… perfect timing!
You have to heavily regress that to the mean. For the league in general, a guy in an 0-2 count is a very poor hitter, a guy in a 3-0 count is an All-Star.
Forever now it seems like… and they haven’t even been able to make it to the world series in the past 5 years while their arch-enemies have won it all twice. I love it.
Joseph Buck is talking about Sabathia. "Well, the Yankees need pitching..."
Asking Ken about the timetable to move Sabathia. Saying it’s possible C.C. won’t pitch his next start in an Indians uniform. Mentioned the Brewers, but the rest was drowned out by rude people talking loudly in the room over the one thing in this game worth listening to.
His numbers are similar to DeRo’s, but DeRo can play MI (including SS better than Miles).
I also saw that the VEB visitor this morning wanted to foist Kennedy on us. Didn’t he remember that AK and DeRo were FAs the same off-season and the Cards had no interest in DeRo?
It's tough for me to judge DeRo's defense at 3B (or anywhere other than SS)
because he moves so much and never has a chance to settle down and concentrate on one position. When he was exclusively a SS (in his early days) he was very good and steady—though certainly not GG.
They actually do have a camera shot for it as well, and they'll cut to it at times.
But he’s talking about where the defenders are set up, and how they’re moving with the pitch. One of the elements of baseball that just goes away when you’re seeing a game on TV.
I was hoping for an equivalent to sopcast, tvu, etc. I never have any trouble finding the Bears games that aren’t on; surely someone out there is streaming this.
BTW, I have no problem with the complaints about his defensive lapses
as he does make more than his share of mistakes in the field. But I have no problem with a SS who does not have power but has a .380-.400 OBP. We don’t need power at every position. Theriot gets his share of clutch hits. He works counts and is scrappy.
Go Cubs!

i like to run a joke into the ground…
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
might as well
especially the ones that weren’t funny to begin with
BradB311 - July 5, 2008
lol
you started it…
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
i know
thats why i can say its not funny
BradB311 - July 5, 2008

Grace picks Lohse for Player of the Game
good news for the Cubs. Is he ever right?
LAcarl519 - July 5, 2008
No.
We’re stuck with Grace today? Ugh.
Al Yellon - July 5, 2008
he did pre-game
LAcarl519 - July 5, 2008
in studio
LAcarl519 - July 5, 2008
Oh, good.
Maybe there will be an actual good announcer there. (Yeah, right.)
Al Yellon - July 5, 2008
Chip Caray & Buck Martinez...
i think.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
I thought Chip worked for TBS...
DeRoMyHero - July 5, 2008
Oh
Yeha. I don’t have a tv. I was going off memory of who I thought I’d heard was scheduled.
 Sorry!
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
that's TBS.

CHICAGO CUBS BASEBALL IS ON THE AIR
:-)
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Good to hear your voice, Pat Hughes!
JohnM - July 5, 2008
I just don't have a warm fuzzy about DeRo in LF with Lilly on the mound.
DeRoMyHero - July 5, 2008
He had that one horrible play in Tampa
but other than that, has he not been good in LF?
JohnM - July 5, 2008
I'm willing to forgive the defense in Tampa
that dome stuff is EVIL. White ball w/ white roof & fake grass. Thats just not right.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
+1
JohnM - July 5, 2008
Yeah, he's made the expected plays in LF,
but he’s definitely not as comfortable as in RF.
Besides, IMO, the bench players should be the ones moving around. Why can’t Fontenot learn how to play LF????
And, I do think the constant postion switching affects DeRo’s stamina and his bat a little bit.
DeRoMyHero - July 5, 2008
Fontenot can barely play second
I can’t imagine the disaster he’d be in the OF
Shanghai Badger - July 5, 2008
Then why is he in the major leagues?
DeRoMyHero - July 5, 2008
now, isn't that a question
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
why, indeed
Shanghai Badger - July 5, 2008
Because he's not an embarassment as a hitter...
...and he’s left handed.
cwyers - July 5, 2008
Perhaps he belongs in the AL as a DH?
DeRoMyHero - July 5, 2008
He doesn't have a DH's bat.
You’re about to make me defend Mike Fontenot and I’m not going to be happy about that. He’s hardly the worst backup second baseman a team can have.
cwyers - July 5, 2008
But can you defend
putting an extra grind on a starting player by having him accommodate a bench player? If that grind costs DeRo 5 starts per season for 15 points of OPS can you justify what Lou is doing?
DeRoMyHero - July 5, 2008
First you'd have to establish that he's doing that.
DeRosa, for all of your concern, seems to be having the best season of his career right now.
cwyers - July 5, 2008
Last year,
his worst month was May, which was also when he moved the most. This year, his June wasn’t so good, and he was moving more with Sori out. I’m more worried about the second half.

Emelie - July 5, 2008
Geovono Soto?

lol, I caught that too.

*Fontenot

sue369 - July 5, 2008
i didn't even know he spoke

carmen_fanzone - July 5, 2008
Fox BY FAR has the worst HD feed out of any other network that carries Cub games.
Yuck. Bad camera angle too.
BLW Believes Esq. - July 5, 2008
I like that angle...
...you can tell strikes better
carmen_fanzone - July 5, 2008
Just got home from

Sounds like a good trip. What better way to spend a Saturday than with the Cubs?
Emelie - July 5, 2008
That's what I'm saying!
I love these afternoon games… it’s just 9pm here, and perfect timing after a nice day out and about.
sanantonecub - July 5, 2008
Sounds like you're
set for the game. Hope we get a win today. Hmmm, now you have me thinking Chinese take-out for dinner tonight.

Dome K's looking, 2 down

JohnM - July 5, 2008
Yes

Karros

carmen_fanzone - July 5, 2008

if he’s going to be around the plate
JohnM - July 5, 2008
yay then we can have 10 million

halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
C'mon Teddy
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Fontenot did the Cardinals lineup too? Who would have thought?

carmen_fanzone - July 5, 2008
for those watching the tv.
how does Lilly’s velocity look?
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
He's throwing a lot of offspeed pitches
carmen_fanzone - July 5, 2008
Ah okay
I was just curious b/c his velocity is always low in the beginning of a game. it doesn’t peak until like the 5th.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Scary, but damage is over
Go Cubs!
sanantonecub - July 5, 2008
Lilly
Lilly good first inning getting out of potential trouble.
He is quite the odd looking chap though isn’t he?
puckishcubsfan - July 5, 2008
Let's get some runs!!!!!!
sue369 - July 5, 2008

halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
The one w/ the soldiers walking through the airport

Jayo525 - July 5, 2008

sue369 - July 5, 2008
Cubs hitters have hot dates?
What’s up with the lack of patience? Lohse has thrown like 20 pitches.
Canadian Cubs Fan - July 5, 2008
Maybe...
... the fact that they didn’t swing in the first inning and struck out looking
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008

carmen_fanzone - July 5, 2008
heh... and Sully's not invited
Emelie - July 5, 2008
he's throwing strikes
you can’t always work deep counts when the pitcher is around the plate. he’s going to make you earn your way on

this whole pitcher batting 8th thing

I know they’re useless… but yet I’m drawn to them
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
those are fun
the stats of how the players done after a certain count? i like them
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
I hate the lack of context.
So many of those splits like that, you have to do some work to make them meaningful. ESPN just throws the data out there.
cwyers - July 5, 2008
i just thnk its interesting
seeing who struggles w/ 2 strikes, etc. Like Aramis is a good 2 strike hitter.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Yeah
Like a hitter will be batting .350 with a 1-1 count and then .211 with a 1-2 count. Not very useful, but very interesting.
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
Small sample size.
You have to heavily regress that to the mean. For the league in general, a guy in an 0-2 count is a very poor hitter, a guy in a 3-0 count is an All-Star.

WOOHOO

Who says he can't hit in LF ;-)
Actually, DMH, I see your point about not moving around a starter. But he’s good at doing it.
Plus, he’s on my Strat-O-Matic team, so the more positions he plays, the better . . . .
Shanghai Badger - July 5, 2008

I was being sarcastic
Joba isn’t pitching today
Shanghai Badger - July 5, 2008
Since I don't

sue369 - July 5, 2008
Damnit. Oh well. 1-0.
Good enough for me.
Jayo525 - July 5, 2008
Am I the only one here who finds the whol
yanks/bosox rivilary fascinating? I like those games.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
i love watching them
but espn covers them way tooo much
Chanman25 - July 5, 2008
Way overdone.
I like watching the games if I can get a YES or NESN feed of the game though, the national broadcasts are unbearable.
sanantonecub - July 5, 2008
It would help if the Yankees weren't such a mediocre team this season.
cwyers - July 5, 2008
Yeah, I don't care if the teams are mismatched in quality.
northsider - July 5, 2008
That's the best part of it, though!!!
I’m dreaming of the Yankees closing out their final season in the “world’s greatest ballpark” before selling out… by missing the playoffs.
sanantonecub - July 5, 2008
doesn't diminish what they've done the last 15 years, tho
Shanghai Badger - July 5, 2008
even though I'm not a Yankee fan by any stretch
Shanghai Badger - July 5, 2008
They've had the highest payroll
Forever now it seems like… and they haven’t even been able to make it to the world series in the past 5 years while their arch-enemies have won it all twice. I love it.
sanantonecub - July 5, 2008
they've still made it to the playoffs every year
after that, it’s a crapshoot
Shanghai Badger - July 5, 2008
True, but for a Yankees fan
That’s not enough. Kind of like how the Cowboys haven’t won a single playoff game in a decade…. beautiful!!!
sanantonecub - July 5, 2008
someday I hope we have the same problem!
Shanghai Badger - July 5, 2008
most national broadcasts are unbearable
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008

Asking Ken about the timetable to move Sabathia. Saying it’s possible C.C. won’t pitch his next start in an Indians uniform. Mentioned the Brewers, but the rest was drowned out by rude people talking loudly in the room over the one thing in this game worth listening to.
northsider - July 5, 2008
ESPN has an article up
Mentioning Brewers as a big suitor for C.C., also mentioned the Dodgers… but not a single mention of the North Side.
sanantonecub - July 5, 2008
Yeah, Rosenthal didn't mention the Cubs either.
northsider - July 5, 2008

Brewers and Dodgers, excuse me.
cwyers - July 5, 2008
We have to match the Brewers at least...
Or make sure that the Indians get him. We can’t afford C.C. to go to another NL team.

What's Glaus like defensively at 3B?
His numbers are similar to DeRo’s, but DeRo can play MI (including SS better than Miles).
I also saw that the VEB visitor this morning wanted to foist Kennedy on us. Didn’t he remember that AK and DeRo were FAs the same off-season and the Cards had no interest in DeRo?
DeRoMyHero - July 5, 2008
To be fair, he wanted to trade him for Marquis.
I’d probably do that deal, find a way to get rid of Kennedy later.
Glaus has done well at third this season, according to ZR.
cwyers - July 5, 2008
It's tough for me to judge DeRo's defense at 3B (or anywhere other than SS)
because he moves so much and never has a chance to settle down and concentrate on one position. When he was exclusively a SS (in his early days) he was very good and steady—though certainly not GG.
DeRoMyHero - July 5, 2008
So how do you really feel about DeRosa moving?
northsider - July 5, 2008
It is helping the team,
but it certainly doesn’t give DeRo a chance to maximize his ability at any one position. It also means he needs more days off, which costs him ABs.

putting Soto in the 3 hole and dropping Lee and Ramirez to 4 and 5.

halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
