Was listening in the car and was screaming with glee when A-Ram went yard. The guy next to me at the stop light had a Cubs hat on and gave me a thumbs up…lol..
This is beautiful tropic summer morning in Okinawa… Looks like Cubs do good rally again right? My TV is just showing BOS NYY but want to watch this CHC STL…
all the time? I always go into a game thinking they will win. Good God the way some of you think would be like having one of your children being excited to play in a ball game and you saying to them, “Why? You’re just going to lose.” Nice.
I undersatnd where your coming from, but I dont like 100 Years like some people…i wanna win now, instead of serving up losses like these and assume they mean nothing.
Man. Teams LOSE. That’s why they PLAY the actual game, instead of just simulating it.
We should have had this one. Marmol was ON. But Kerry let it get away. It sucks. We hate it. And tomorrow, they play again, and hopefully we win, and move on.
How the hell is he supposed to be any good at this if he’s looking over his shoulder. Honestly, people, THINK before you post. NO ONE disagreed with brining in Wood. Any idiot can critique in hindsight.
But I wouldn’t mind a rule that where a starter gives up 4 runs in the first inning he gets pulled if he has a history of sucking after that. Obviously your standards are different for a starter because it’s still early in hte game
...though it is true that this season that almost every time Woody has walked or hit the first batter, he’s blown the save. It seems like he either has it or he doesn’t.
Did you see Wood’s #s for his last 17 appearances before today? Guys have off days. If it wasn’t for that Molina call, the inning would never have happened the way it did. Woody will be just fine as will the back end of our bullpen.
Note - I was not saying Rivera is better than Wood
I like wood as a closer – i would trade him for maybe 2 other closers in the league. I was just mentioning that Rivera had better stuff than Kerry TODAY – nothing more
I’d have to look more at the stats of other closers. Personally I would like Huston Street, but that’s because he’s younger and I’m biased. I think Wood is one of the top 5 closers in the league.
Woody's got to get his head right to pitch EVERY TIME
if he hits or walks the first guy, he usually pisses the game away. This was a horrible, horrible loss. Doing it against an AL team is one thing, but doing it against the Cards is completely unacceptable. He should feel like shit tonight, deservedly so.
by him going out there and doing it… and then bouncing back after the occassional bad outing.
At least thats how I see it. I don’t know for sure if thats the best way, b/c the team I’ve loved for as long as I can remember hasn’t won one. But its what we’ve got. And as a cub fan i have to hope that its right.
 Reliance comes from experience together. This is part of that.
But. We’ve gotta keep our heads up and hope he’s got it next time he trots out. Thats how he’s going to stop it and how he’s going to become what (i hope) he could be. A great one.
Had the bases loaded with no outs today, a run already in, and the Yankees staring at three straight loses to the Sox. So, shut-down closers do put the first two on sometimes.
Rivera has been closing games for over a decade. Woody is learning on the job.
‘Member the game against the Dodgers when they loaded the bases before Woody got out of it w/ that K?
He can do it, he just didn’t get it done today. Sure it sucks, but to say that he can’t do it is ridiculous. And this comparison to Rivera is premature at best and idiotic at worst.
Name one closer in the history of the universe that NEVER blew a game against a good team. It happens. Ice your wounds and get over it.
except that Wood was closing last year…even in his minor league rehab stints. Now, you may well be right in that “these things happen” but the Nervous Nellie in me wonders if there is anything Woody can yet improve on so he can be our vintage-era Rivera or Sutter.
He didn't walk or hit the first batter in that Dodgers game
I still think he’s a good closer – or at least a decent closer. He now trails only Isringhausen in blown saves this year – and I believe all but one came in games where he hit or walked the first batter.
anybody who’s trolling on this site just to rip an opposing team is beyond pathetic-just ignore them-they want a reaction because it creates the temporary illusion that they have lives.
Been on this site for many, many games....win or lose
just because YOU haven’t noticed me doesn’t mean I’m a troll. Woody’s blown 5 saves this year, and almost all have been when he’s walked or hit the first batter of the inning, so my point is BEYOND valid. Yet immediately, I’m labeled as a troll. That pisses me off. So if I’m coming off as an a-hole to you, you know what, I’ll get over it. As for you telling people to change your tone, if you feel self-important enough to do that, fire away.
that you were coming across the screen in a certain way.
I don’t know you from Adam and make no excuses about that. I’m sorry if I offended you, but that is how I (and others judging from the comments above) read your comments.
Sports is a passionate thing, and losing one like that stings
And Kerry has got phenomenal stuff, he just needs to throw strikes to win. So I’m extra bothered when he doesn’t. I’m also troubled about the obvious trend that has appeared in the games he’s blown.
I also apologize if I’ve offended you, but my point was valid, regardless if people didn’t like the way I said it. Kerry’s going to feel lousy about today, and he should. I didn’t personally attack him. I pointed out that he’s showing a trend during his failed opportunities. It was not the ump’s fault he was missing the strike zone, it was his. Kerry’s a great player, and my hope is that he takes his game to the next level. He’s got to.
Woody is our closer, Gang, for better or for worse. For the vast majority of the time this season he has been great. Remember, this is his first season as a closer. I think he is catching on pretty well for OJT.
I will say this, he has to learn to calm down and get that final out with his good stuff. He will learn. If he doesn’t, we’re screwed.
Wood has been a decent closer for, 80+ games now. Sometimes THEY FAIL. It’s too bad, but there ain’t a damn thing we can do about it. I did not see the bad call, but I was able to listen—poor Ronnie. (I think I heard a “JESUS!” out of him during that inning.)
In this market, Trevor Hoffman has been closing for almost 15 years - got the Padres to a damn WS - and now, that he’s on the down side, he’s booed. He’s headed to the HOF, but he’s getting booed.
Some people here just need to chill. This team is getting healthy, A-Ram may be showing signs of coming out of his slump. Lee’s hot. Soriano’s return will really help. I think his value is now more than evident.
I find myself agreeing with both sides. Championship teams go for the kill and don’t let games like today get away, and even the good ones piss away games to worthy opponents.
Still glad we took the first game so we’re assured of the top spot upon returning home.
threw up in my mouth a little…... those walks man… they ALWAYS ALWAYS score…. too big of a series to be giving games away…. especially to the memphis redbirds.

ARAM FOR MVP - July 5, 2008
"Pesky farking Cards" = trolling?
I’m not exactly sure what ‘farking’ is, but it doesn’t sound like a compliment, so how could Flag Up’s comment be considered trolling?

halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008

madeindetroit - July 5, 2008
Aren't you just being a bit dramatic?
In my opinion, what makes a championship team different, is that they don’t let a bad loss affect the next game or the game after that.
cowsarecool220 - July 5, 2008
You must be young.

Why be negative
all the time? I always go into a game thinking they will win. Good God the way some of you think would be like having one of your children being excited to play in a ball game and you saying to them, “Why? You’re just going to lose.” Nice.

Bad luck for us today. Shake it off. Tomorrow is another day.
drewishdrewid - July 5, 2008
Ugh
I undersatnd where your coming from, but I dont like 100 Years like some people…i wanna win now, instead of serving up losses like these and assume they mean nothing.
Rudey - July 5, 2008
you are a Rockies guy
Emelie - July 5, 2008
TY
for telling me what I AM
You are a underachiever. See how it easy it is to just say you are anything i wanna say you are?
Rudey - July 5, 2008
this wasn't the clinching game of the world series
it was a game in july. wow.
no one LIKES the drought. but we’re not iong to win the world series in july. and one game does not a season make.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
what are you talking about?
Man. Teams LOSE. That’s why they PLAY the actual game, instead of just simulating it.
We should have had this one. Marmol was ON. But Kerry let it get away. It sucks. We hate it. And tomorrow, they play again, and hopefully we win, and move on.
drewishdrewid - July 5, 2008
Well, if you want to win now...
...perhaps you should consider coming to more Cubs games. Your signature looks pretty impressive.
ballhawk - July 5, 2008
Dude
shit happens. Even to first place teams
El Borto - July 5, 2008
the problem wasnt
edmonds play at the plate it was wood’s whole 9th inning. Marmol does good today and wood did horrible
cubbie1029 - July 5, 2008
Woody left the slider up...
should have gone with the hard stuff…
Bump Bailey - July 5, 2008
was that geo's call?
Emelie - July 5, 2008

New rule:
If Kerry walks or hits the first batter, pull him.
John Q Freejazz - July 5, 2008
Yes!!!!
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
he's gotten out of it before
this shit happens.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
I think less than 50% of the time he gets out of it
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
b/c the last 3 outs are hard
and who do you bring in anyway? your closer is your closer. you ride it out. especially when he’s new at it.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
+1
How the hell is he supposed to be any good at this if he’s looking over his shoulder. Honestly, people, THINK before you post. NO ONE disagreed with brining in Wood. Any idiot can critique in hindsight.
Shanghai Badger - July 5, 2008
+111111
Madison Cub Fan - July 5, 2008
If he walks or hits the first guy
It seems to mean he doesn’t have it – because he blows the save almost every single time.
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
Even if he loses 75% of the time when he hits/walks the first guy?
Do you really think it’s that hard?
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
yes i do
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Agree to disagree
I think even Howry could get a save once in 5 tries or so with a man on first and no outs.
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
if it isn't, why aren't there more lights-out closers in the league?
how many can you name?
Shanghai Badger - July 5, 2008
saving is hard - i agree
But not so hard that it’s almost impossible to get a save when you hit or walk the first guy
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
he's learning on the job
the last 3 outs are different, do you agree tot hat?
he’s saved 12 straight before today. Thats pretty good.
And he’d given up baserunners too.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
that is absurd
so every pitcher that gives up a runner gets yanked?
I can’t imagine why no one has let you manage a team yet.
Shanghai Badger - July 5, 2008
NO!
If a pitcher blows the game 80% of the time or more when a certain event happens – then you pull him after that event.
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
seriously
so… Z’s not allowed to pitch on days when he’s only had 1 banana and its over 80 degrees, b/c he fails to do well everytime?
Your standards are wack.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Fine if you think that
But I wouldn’t mind a rule that where a starter gives up 4 runs in the first inning he gets pulled if he has a history of sucking after that. Obviously your standards are different for a starter because it’s still early in hte game
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
bingo
Emelie - July 5, 2008
That's an absolutly ridiculous rule.
slcathena - July 5, 2008
Great idea! (sarcasm)
Pulling Kerry shows the ultimate confidence! (sarcasm) Remember, just like Marmol, the Cubs are going nowhere without him.
cowsarecool220 - July 5, 2008
If you tell him the rule beforehand - i don't see the big confidence effect
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
Sure, that'd REALLY solve things....
It’s a GREAT idea to have your closer looking over his shoulder all the time…..
cowsarecool220 - July 5, 2008
He would be looking over his shoulder only when he walks/hits the first batter
I see it no different from pulling a starter if he gives up 5 runs in the first.
Hitting/walking the first batter has clearly shown that he doesn’t have anything that day so far this year.
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
you pull Z when he gives up 5 runs in the first?
I wouldn’t. you trust your ace to ride it out and get it out and keep you in the game.
i see the closer as the ace of the bullpen. same thing.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
No - I wouldn't pull Z in that sitaution
But if I had the stats and every time he gives up 5 in the first he goes on to give up 12 runs in the first 4 innings, I would certainly consider it.
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
whatever
i don’t see where you’re coming from ont his, but I’m done. :-)
Agree to disagree.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Sounds good
Here’s hoping Wood saves the game tomorrow 1-2-3 :)
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
sounds good to me
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
girl don't waste your breathe on him
he clearly isnt worth it
Madison Cub Fan - July 5, 2008
Come on
Just because I have a different view point?
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
Of course I'm being facetious...
...though it is true that this season that almost every time Woody has walked or hit the first batter, he’s blown the save. It seems like he either has it or he doesn’t.
John Q Freejazz - July 5, 2008
agree
Emelie - July 5, 2008
I'm out
See y’all later
cocknfire - July 5, 2008
How bout this Brewer fans get the hell out of here.
ARAM FOR MVP - July 5, 2008
He wasn't that bad
In fact, his last two posts were pulling for the third out.
Shanghai Badger - July 5, 2008
He did post "CUBS LOSE!!!"
Have fun losing your 2 fatties at year ends cheesehead!
ARAM FOR MVP - July 5, 2008
missed that one, but so what?
Shanghai Badger - July 5, 2008
ignore it
or if you can’t take people saying stupid things… don’t go on the internet.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Let it go dude....not important
carmen_fanzone - July 5, 2008
No, he didn't
He posted “CUBS LOSE”
no exclamation points.
Shanghai Badger - July 5, 2008
why not just ingnore them?
sue369 - July 5, 2008
Yep
Shanghai Badger - July 5, 2008
Rivera does what Wood could not
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
yes b/c rivera has never blown a save to the red sox
excpet for all those times he’s blown a save to the red sox.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Get a grip.
Did you see Wood’s #s for his last 17 appearances before today? Guys have off days. If it wasn’t for that Molina call, the inning would never have happened the way it did. Woody will be just fine as will the back end of our bullpen.
LAcarl519 - July 5, 2008
Note - I was not saying Rivera is better than Wood
I like wood as a closer – i would trade him for maybe 2 other closers in the league. I was just mentioning that Rivera had better stuff than Kerry TODAY – nothing more
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
who?
Madison Cub Fan - July 5, 2008
Not sure
I’d have to look more at the stats of other closers. Personally I would like Huston Street, but that’s because he’s younger and I’m biased. I think Wood is one of the top 5 closers in the league.
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
Rivera is better overall
Rudey - July 5, 2008
he's also been closing games
for 15 years.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Agreed
thats a big point.
I was just saying he would be right to assume that.
Rudey - July 5, 2008
And wood's been closing
for… lets see: march, april, may, june, 5 days of july…
thats… a shade over 4 months.
Unreasonable standards, much?
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
....
Im not wrong about who the better closer is….dont take the loss out on me cause im not straight out lieing…
Rudey - July 5, 2008
For a team that has
Eric Gag me…...
You really have little room to talk about a blown save.
Galvan316 - July 5, 2008
Who's pitching for the Cardinals tomorrow?
carmen_fanzone - July 5, 2008
Wellemeyer. We should pund him.
ARAM FOR MVP - July 5, 2008
Cool. Thanks.
Let’s Get em tomorrow!
carmen_fanzone - July 5, 2008
Woody's got to get his head right to pitch EVERY TIME
if he hits or walks the first guy, he usually pisses the game away. This was a horrible, horrible loss. Doing it against an AL team is one thing, but doing it against the Cards is completely unacceptable. He should feel like shit tonight, deservedly so.
VolPowers - July 5, 2008
"wonders what VolPowers does for a job and if he/she perfect everytime"
I personally am not perfect. So I understand people have bad days
Madison Cub Fan - July 5, 2008
Guess how much they DONT pay me for what I do?????
VolPowers - July 5, 2008
Give it a rest...
I’m sure he feels bad about it. It’s ONE FUCKING GAME!
carmen_fanzone - July 5, 2008
I, for one, turned the TV right off
I’ll catch Lou’s post game tomorrow.
Emelie - July 5, 2008
Wood had saved 12 straight games before today
its not an “omg everytime he comes in he sucks”.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
excellent perspective
Emelie - July 5, 2008
Funny how people have such a short memory.....
cowsarecool220 - July 5, 2008
no one goes 162-0
Madison Cub Fan - July 5, 2008
You're only as good
as your last appearance. AKA What have you done for me lately.
bubbamike the one and only - July 5, 2008
word
he’s been pitching great lately. And he almost got out of that disaster. He’ll be back tomorrow.
carmen_fanzone - July 5, 2008
well said.....
..I do get concerned that he seems to come a little un glued when he walks / HBP a guy
This isnt all on Wood….Molina went around and why was Lee playing in? That was the ball game
JB 23 - July 5, 2008
Lee was playing in
because they were expecting a bunt.
drewishdrewid - July 5, 2008
exactly
sue369 - July 5, 2008
5 blown saves this season..that's not good
VolPowers - July 5, 2008
I'll take 12 saves out of 13 save opportunities
like Wood’s given us over the last weeks.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Agreed. And if it wasn't for the Molina check swing call on 2-2
the inning would have never got out of control. Kerry was tough today. Just a bad day. It happens. Next.
LAcarl519 - July 5, 2008
Still, you can't come out of the bully and put the first two on if you're a shut-down closer
VolPowers - July 5, 2008
I'd much rather have back-to-back-to-back's beat us..at least he's throwing strikes then
VolPowers - July 5, 2008
I'd rather not lose
and have perfect 20/20 vision.
Shit happens.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Hard to argue with that...doesn't change the fact Woody can do better
VolPowers - July 5, 2008
And?
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
It's a cause for concern...this team has an opportunity to win a championship
And you have to have a guy you can rely on in the 9th to win one.
VolPowers - July 5, 2008
And you learn to rely on a guy in the 9th
by him going out there and doing it… and then bouncing back after the occassional bad outing.
At least thats how I see it. I don’t know for sure if thats the best way, b/c the team I’ve loved for as long as I can remember hasn’t won one. But its what we’ve got. And as a cub fan i have to hope that its right.
 Reliance comes from experience together. This is part of that.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Agree about the bounce back, but the bounce back should be a rarity
5 times before the All-Star break is what I hope stops real, real soon.
VolPowers - July 5, 2008
Agreed
It sucks to blow 5 S.O. it sucks to blow any.
But. We’ve gotta keep our heads up and hope he’s got it next time he trots out. Thats how he’s going to stop it and how he’s going to become what (i hope) he could be. A great one.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Mariano Rivera
Had the bases loaded with no outs today, a run already in, and the Yankees staring at three straight loses to the Sox. So, shut-down closers do put the first two on sometimes.
Mr W - July 5, 2008
But most shut down closers occassionally get out of that situation - like Rivera
Kerry Wood has yet to do so
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
And again
Rivera has been closing games for over a decade. Woody is learning on the job.
‘Member the game against the Dodgers when they loaded the bases before Woody got out of it w/ that K?
He can do it, he just didn’t get it done today. Sure it sucks, but to say that he can’t do it is ridiculous. And this comparison to Rivera is premature at best and idiotic at worst.
Name one closer in the history of the universe that NEVER blew a game against a good team. It happens. Ice your wounds and get over it.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
I Agree Mostly
except that Wood was closing last year…even in his minor league rehab stints. Now, you may well be right in that “these things happen” but the Nervous Nellie in me wonders if there is anything Woody can yet improve on so he can be our vintage-era Rivera or Sutter.
CaliCub - July 5, 2008
He didn't walk or hit the first batter in that Dodgers game
I still think he’s a good closer – or at least a decent closer. He now trails only Isringhausen in blown saves this year – and I believe all but one came in games where he hit or walked the first batter.
Texas Wahoo - July 5, 2008
Who are you?
If your for the Cards, well we dont need to talk about Isrighhausen
And if your for the Brewers…. well must we bring up the Gagne effect?
I seem to recall a game what was it THURSDAY?
When the Brewers blew a 5 run lead.
Galvan316 - July 5, 2008
Who am I? I'm a Cubs fan you jackass, and I'm pissed that we lost a big game today
Stop showing your ass
VolPowers - July 5, 2008
Look at it this way;
anybody who’s trolling on this site just to rip an opposing team is beyond pathetic-just ignore them-they want a reaction because it creates the temporary illusion that they have lives.
bluekoolaide - July 5, 2008
I'm a Cubs fan you morons....give it up on your troll theories
VolPowers - July 5, 2008
you're coming across as an a-hole
who only showed up when we lost/were about to lose.
Change your tone or expect to be called a troll. :-)
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Been on this site for many, many games....win or lose
just because YOU haven’t noticed me doesn’t mean I’m a troll. Woody’s blown 5 saves this year, and almost all have been when he’s walked or hit the first batter of the inning, so my point is BEYOND valid. Yet immediately, I’m labeled as a troll. That pisses me off. So if I’m coming off as an a-hole to you, you know what, I’ll get over it. As for you telling people to change your tone, if you feel self-important enough to do that, fire away.
VolPowers - July 5, 2008
I was trying to tell you
that you were coming across the screen in a certain way.
I don’t know you from Adam and make no excuses about that. I’m sorry if I offended you, but that is how I (and others judging from the comments above) read your comments.
:deep breath: Thats all.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Point taken on the deep breath.
VolPowers - July 5, 2008
I'm just pissed that Ankiel beat us...
...and we didn’t score when we had major opportunities to do so…
But, game’s over.Lots of positives today. We’ll get em tomorrow.
See ya all later.
carmen_fanzone - July 5, 2008
bye
thanks for the PxP. :-)
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Just Back From the Game
Well, that sucked.
08Cubs - July 5, 2008
Yes it did.
But tomorrow’s another day.
sue369 - July 5, 2008
Wood
Woody is our closer, Gang, for better or for worse. For the vast majority of the time this season he has been great. Remember, this is his first season as a closer. I think he is catching on pretty well for OJT.
I will say this, he has to learn to calm down and get that final out with his good stuff. He will learn. If he doesn’t, we’re screwed.
Mr W - July 5, 2008
Oh well.
Kerry just didn’t have it today. We will give them tomorrow.
Unique - July 5, 2008
*GET THEM
Unique - July 5, 2008
Well, that wasn't how I wanted my Saturday night to start
:sigh: Anyway. Go cubs. Lets pay ‘em back tomorrow.
halfblindcubbiegirl - July 5, 2008
Boy....
I’ll take 2 out of 3.
San Diego Smooth Jazz Man - July 5, 2008
+1
sue369 - July 5, 2008
Woody had nothing on his fastball today
He topped out at 95 and I think he only hit that once.
He has average stuff today and they made him pay
TheRiot Police - July 5, 2008
On The Fence
I find myself agreeing with both sides. Championship teams go for the kill and don’t let games like today get away, and even the good ones piss away games to worthy opponents.
Still glad we took the first game so we’re assured of the top spot upon returning home.
CaliCub - July 5, 2008
think i just..
threw up in my mouth a little…... those walks man… they ALWAYS ALWAYS score…. too big of a series to be giving games away…. especially to the memphis redbirds.
