The rest of those pitches in the AB weren't near the zone, then he's gonna go and give the pitcher that one after Ryan worked the count? I don't like it.
But if he’s waiting to see Theriot’s reaction before calling it and adjusting accordingly THAT’S bullshit. Same for a 3-0 pitch just needing to be somewhere in the vicinity of the plate.
IMO, random quality starts makes you a bad pitcher because consistency is one of the best characteristics of a good starting pitcher. Occasional poor outings are going to happen. Heck, even if he had a predictable schedule of bad/good starts, we would be better off.
I understand why Cards fans called him BiPolar Betty.
it’s a quality start in the record books. Especially with the capabilities of our offense… it was an adequate outing. Not Z/Harden/even Lilly quality, but not sure I’d call it crap.

Lou In Blue - August 1, 2008
That''s why you wait for the ump to call it ball four, Riot
JohnM - August 1, 2008
Ryan Theriot has proven he knows where the strike zone is...
That was a bad call, Ryan was working the walk.
Jimmyeatworld - August 1, 2008
It was a bad call I agree
but Theriot didn’t help himself there. Umps hate that.
JohnM - August 1, 2008
The rest of those pitches in the AB weren't near the zone, then he's gonna go and give the pitcher that one after Ryan worked the count? I don't like it.
Jimmyeatworld - August 1, 2008
Bad call!
that ball never had the plate. Not even the black, it went around the zone.
Jimmyeatworld - August 1, 2008
Theriot started walking before the ump called it
Gave him a reason to ring him up
JohnM - August 1, 2008
Which, in and of itself, is bullshit.
neverAcquiesce - August 1, 2008
Agree
but it happens and players gotta be aware of that.
JohnM - August 1, 2008
Doesn't excuse it.
A ball is a ball is a ball. The ump shouldn’t call it strike simply cos you feel the batter showed you up by walking to first. It’s ridiculous.
neverAcquiesce - August 1, 2008
Not to be too obnoxious, but...
A ball is whatever the ump says it is. No recourse. :^(
arioso - August 1, 2008
Yeah...
But if he’s waiting to see Theriot’s reaction before calling it and adjusting accordingly THAT’S bullshit. Same for a 3-0 pitch just needing to be somewhere in the vicinity of the plate.
