Tonight's game has been postponed. There will be a split doubleheader tomorrow, Wednesday; first game at noon CT; second game at 6 pm CT.
Will leave this up for discussion tonight, or if you want to talk about the Cardinals/Marlins game or the Brewers/Padres game.

Really bummed
I really look forward to the games on WGN since I don’t get to see them otherwise. Guess I will have to settle for gameday tomorrow at work and not get any work done.
tucsoncubsfan - August 12, 2008

i am so pissed….ok….upset…since what can you do about the weather…....but god damnit….i was so looking forward to settling in and watching the cubs…at 7pm. uggggh….........

Double headers suck
How often do teams win both ends? I’d love to see the stats on that, but I bet it’s very rare.
At least Harden gets an extra day’s rest.
Canadian Cubs Fan - August 12, 2008
Must be why I saw Marquis going in game 1 tomorrow
Now we’ve got 6 games in the next 5 days, so we either need one of tomorrow’s starters to go on 3 days rest, or use Marshall. Obviously Harden won’t pitch on short rest.
The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street - August 12, 2008
The Elias Sports Bureau found that double headers are swept only 48.9% of the time
I was reading about doubleheaders earlier today after a discussion in another thread and ran across that tidbit of info.
flachimesa - August 12, 2008
That's about what you'd expect, right?
About half of them are sweeps and half of them split?
Al Yellon - August 12, 2008
maybe half of them are sweeps
and the other have are sweeps in the other direction.
o_0
drewishdrewid - August 12, 2008
hm..
by that logic, they would all be sweeps, no?

Man, just a constant rain from Turner tonight.
Started about 5:30 and had a steady rain since then. I am glad that tickets for tonight’s game are honored for the 1:00 game tommorrow.
GateCity, VA Cubs Fan - August 12, 2008
Bummer
It’s felt like eternity with a day off yesterday and a night game tonight but with the rain delay I guess I’ll just have to suck it up. We gotta take advantage of this brave’s team that had been playing poorly and has already dumped some of it’s core players. 3 out of 4 is a must. Now let’s do it Padres!!
Bpatterson83 - August 12, 2008

Question: Cubs should
a) Make one more key move by going after _ (name available player)
b) Hang on with what they’ve got until Sept. 1 and 40 man roster
c) Only make a deal for somebody if lead in divison goes to 1 game or less before Sept, 1
d) Other (specify)
sweetswinger - August 12, 2008
D
I really think I’d like to see the Cubs specify
Fukudometer - August 12, 2008
B
We have enough guys to bring up – Pie, Micah, Hart, Carmen, Wuertz, Hill, Dubois – I think we will be fine.
dtpollitt - August 12, 2008
Of the ones you mention....
... you won’t see Dubois, I don’t think—he’s not on the 40-man roster and not likely to be added. Pignatiello, probably not either. If pitchers are added other than Hart and/or Wuertz, it’ll be Jon Lieber and/or Chad Fox returning from the DL.
But I agree that Pie, Hoffpauir and Hill are headed to Chicago on Sept. 1. Or whenever the PCL playoffs are over.
Al Yellon - August 12, 2008
Ahhh
Forgot about Lieber and Fox. Good call.
dtpollitt - August 12, 2008
that's ok
Lou has forgotten about them too.
drewishdrewid - August 12, 2008
Iowa and Chicago-Long Relationship
Iowa and the Chicago Cubs have had a relationship since 1981. A lot of I-Cubs fans are also Chicago Cubs fans. That’s important because the I-Cubs and their fans won’t have their feathers ruffled if Chicago calls up players before the PCL playoffs. The I-Cubs faithful would be happy to see their former players help Chicago in the stretch run starting Sept. 1.
If fans of a AAA team don’t really care about the parent club, then the fans care more about keeping the AAA players for the duration of the playoffs. They would rather see the AAA team win a championship than the parent club. That’s not the case with the I-Cubs.
memphiscub - August 13, 2008
I vote for B.
It’s only 2 1/2 weeks till Sept. 1. The reinforcements will help. There’s not much help out there from other teams right now.

Random update
Since this probably doesn’t deserve its own post
Micah Owings is headed to the Reds as a part of the Dunn deal
linky
berselius - August 12, 2008
That sucks
lostinthevines - August 12, 2008
Now that looks like a good deal for the Reds in the long-run
dtpollitt - August 12, 2008
Not sure
Micah might be a better hitter than a pitcher.
Shanghai Badger - August 12, 2008
Sucks either way, since he's potentially a double threat.
Dunn was a one-trick pony (though it was a pretty good trick, at that)
lostinthevines - August 12, 2008
Am I just paranoid..
or does it seem like everyone’s loading up to go against the Cubs?
Cards pick up that middle IF Felipe Lopez who hammers Z..
D-Backs get Dunn, who becomes Superman in Wrigley..
Angels grab Teixeira to boost their offense..
Red Sox trade for Bay..
(I notice the White Sox didn’t make a move – hmm)
The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street - August 12, 2008
If Owings pitches against the Cubs...
... for the Reds, that might help, because they hit him hard in a relief appearance last month in Phoenix.
Al Yellon - August 12, 2008
Still -
The fewer times we face him, the better, and now he’s in the division

My jersey will say what it’s said for a few years “Fan Since 69”
say hey if you spot us .. All the guys in my church group are all Tennesseans but are all Cub fans. My pastor, his brother and father are all Texans and huge Kerry Wood fans.
This ought to be interesting.

I’ll be in a authentic blue # 5 jersey with no name on the back. I think we’re in 121 or close to it.

pregnant, My family had a baby shower for my daughter on Sunday. So far the wife, and two daughters not well. With the third daughter close. The only one that is not sick that I am aware of is my daughter that is bearing our first grandchild.

I had the flu when my kid was born. Had to wear a mask and could not really handle the newborn. When visitors came to the hospital, they said I looked worse than my wife, after her delivery!
Also, can’t take a chance w/infecting a newborn. Doctors here will send a newborn (

Seeing a sea of orange. I will be going south this weekend to watch the Cubs if it doesn’t rain like it is right now.
They are in a rain delay. Game is official if it’s called since they’ve completed 5 1/2 innings with the home team Marlins leading 4-3.

lostinthevines - August 12, 2008
No, but...

Al Yellon - August 12, 2008
I'm using my tickets from the Chiefs / Cougars game
lostinthevines - August 12, 2008

concessions. Not normal for a HS game anywhere, I don’t think.
Will the employees outnumber the fans?
lostinthevines - August 12, 2008
Beer, specifically, I was thinking of.
lostinthevines - August 12, 2008
Dunno about beer, but...
... I imagine they’ll have some concessions available. You can call the Cubs and ask them if you really want to know.

zevkalman - August 12, 2008
It's been a while
I am out for trip mostly in August for both business and watching high school baseball these days, and could not afford to check back how Cubs playing recently….
Urasho from Okinawa in Summer High school tournament at Koshien Stadium (US’s Final Four equivalent) plays well as they win first 2 matches strongly and now facing Tokyo’s contender tomorrow. I’ve attended the 2nd match against Chiba and you can feel the heat on those flickr photos and YouTube Footages (There are 4 movies I took for this game).
I know Dome is officially in slump again in August – I don’t believe what Destrade says (I know this guy well) and I don’t think the reason is more practical and technical stuff than such generally observed ones from outsiders, but anyway I hope Dome is back asap.
Dome wrote a long diary on Aug 4th on his website, and I don’t have enough time to translate them all at this moment, but looks like he is still optimistic and positive on anything.
Looking forward Cubs and Dome play better in rest of the season and red-hot October.
dragonsfanatic - August 12, 2008
I think Dome will be okay..
The pitchers made their adjustments to his early season run, and now Kosuke has to figure out the counter-adjustments to get back on track at the plate. But he’s had too much success in Japan, and he’s too good of a fundamental player to think that he won’t be able to figure things out. I don’t care about the power so long as he can get back to working the counts into his favor.
The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street - August 12, 2008
Dome's problems are solved!!!
I know why he’s been slumping. Before tonight, dragonsfanatic’s last post was in the game thread on July 31, the last game in Milwaukee (Dome homered in that game).
Since then Dome is 3-for-28.
Welcome back, dragonsfanatic! Don’t stop posting, because Dome hits when you’re here!

ChipSet - August 12, 2008
Dome is a professional tool .. he'll get it together ..
His history clearly shows the man is a great ball player. It will be in steps .. beginning with, as the Mayor and others have said, getting back to where he was sooo solid at the first of the year, and that was in a far more patient AB then he’s had.
Lately, he’s hacked away more like a member of the Cubs during the last year of Dustyball, but I’m convinced he’s too professional a guy to handle this. A couple days off with some game videos, I think, will help him see what’s going on here. Being the kind of hitter he is, he’s got to do something ASAP ..
cubnational - August 12, 2008
I hope that was a typo

No, I don't think it's a big deal...
...it’s just that Edmonds is ONE OF US now. No point on trying to make him look bad unless there’s evidence of stating such claims as him trying to fail on purpose.

JEROMEWALTON'SBATTINGSTANCE - August 12, 2008
Hardly damning evidence
And certainly does nothing to promote signing Sheffield
Shanghai Badger - August 12, 2008
It simply proves that there are rumours about every player
And just because there are rumours does not make them true or that they would not help the Cubs. Sheffield has won more and been in more big games that most players on the Cubs. To dismiss his abilities based on an alleged reputation and rumour would be a kin to those who said we should not sign Edmonds because of the same.
JEROMEWALTON'SBATTINGSTANCE - August 12, 2008
ALLEGED REPUTATION??!?
There is DOCUMENTED EVIDENCE that he made errors on purpose!!!!!
There is documented evidence that his contract stated he’d DH, and now he’s complaining!
He thinks platooning means not playing each and every day.
There is documented evidence of him bitching about every place he’d ever left.
Those aren’t rumors!
Shanghai Badger - August 12, 2008
I have no idea what we are discussing anymore. Sheff is over the hill, he’s a cancer, and we don’t need him. End.
Dan
dtpollitt - August 12, 2008
You guys are right
but I think about our lineup in a WS (knock on wood) and do not see how we can possibly match up when required to play a DH. I guess I just want to play fantasy baseball and have a better line up on paper.
JEROMEWALTON'SBATTINGSTANCE - August 12, 2008
Trouble is, the games aren't played on paper
And it’s not worth carrying a cancer that could put making the playoffs a risk for what would be a maximum 4 games of usefulness.
Shanghai Badger - August 12, 2008
I am sure I am in the SMALLEST of minorities
when I say I would much rather not make the playoffs than lose the world series. I do not think I could bear it.
JEROMEWALTON'SBATTINGSTANCE - August 12, 2008
Yeah, I'd say that's a minority
Shanghai Badger - August 12, 2008
Yes, this is ridiculous
dtpollitt - August 12, 2008
Did you read Badgers link?
IMHO Sheffield admitting to errors that would be enough to take away any advantage having him as a DH for a max of 4 games in the WS
Madison Cub Fan - August 12, 2008
I think your point about the DH is somewhat fair
but here’s my argument to refute that.
Our run differential is +139. The next closest is Boston at +114. AL has home field advantage, which means 4 games with the DH given a 7 game series. And who would we put in that DH role? Luckily, we have a handful of players we have been platooning that can fit that role – Reed if it’s a LHP, and a handful of other hitters like Fontenot, DeRosa depending on the lineup, and a few guys in the minors that have power. I mean, hell, Micah hit FOUR home runs in his first four ABs down in Iowa the other night.
Now, what about those other three games at Wrigley? Without a doubt we have the best hitting pitchers – Zambrano, Marquis, even Dempster can do it. And you have to assume whoever the AL team is will not have pitchers that do much of anything in the batter’s box.
With our offense, which this year is clearly one in which every damn player contributes, I’m truly less worried about the DH in the World Series, given both our team-oriented approach to hitting this year, and our superior hitting pitchers.

Umm...quote from that article:
“People interpret him as being conceited, and it’s not the case.”
This article talks about how Edmonds is MISCONCEIVED as a bad teammate…
PurpleLineToWrigley - August 12, 2008
Well then, he seems to have righted his ways.
Sheffield has been bad THIS YEAR.
PurpleLineToWrigley - August 12, 2008
As a side note...
...if we are looking how bad Gary is this year, look at Andruw Jones’ line this year:
BA HR RBI OBP SLG
.161 3 14 .261 .254
in 74 games. WOW. B-A-D.
dtpollitt - August 12, 2008
What a BARGAIN
at only 18 mil per! Haha…seriously…wow.
PurpleLineToWrigley - August 12, 2008
+1
And it would be 13 million dollar bitching, FWIW…
PurpleLineToWrigley - August 12, 2008
So when does he play?
Haha I’m sorry, I just really think this is the worst possible move the Cubs (or any contending team playing well) could make…
PurpleLineToWrigley - August 12, 2008
And WHERE does he play?
He even looks bad defensively as a DH! (That’s also a joke…)
PurpleLineToWrigley - August 12, 2008

Padres suck!
Itchy - August 12, 2008
I noticed Schroeder didn't accuse Fielder of showboating
Of course, he only says that about the opposition.
Shanghai Badger - August 12, 2008
Yep, Fats just stood there and then strutted down to 1st.
Total showboat
Itchy - August 12, 2008
Classy team.

Wrigley
I love Wrigley but the cubs need a massive renovation or a new ballpark. It breaks my heart but Wrigley is falling apart. What does everybody think? Another piece of concrete fell this year. This time on the field level.
sanks - August 12, 2008
the new owner will
take care of it…
preachermancubsfan - August 12, 2008
I think
Wrigley is a historical site, and an integral part of the Cubs. They won’t move.
drewishdrewid - August 12, 2008
the brewers will never lose again
apparently.
ballstitch - August 12, 2008
they are playing bad teams......
I didnt expect them to lose to the Nationals or Padres. Those are the two worse teams in baseball
Madison Cub Fan - August 12, 2008
im just being negative
It helps pass the time.
ballstitch - August 12, 2008
Boston wins 19-17

Cubs are in for a fight
I wanted the Cubs to build a big division league. The ghost of 1969 will always haunt me.
sanks - August 12, 2008
the brewers could gain a game on us without us even playing..
Chanman25 - August 12, 2008
we'll just have
to take them back again.

JEROMEWALTON'SBATTINGSTANCE - August 12, 2008

Indeed.
Brewers have a hell of a team, though. It’s not dislike that makes me want them out of the post-season – it’s respect.
Shanghai Badger - August 12, 2008
You know, if you just stop by to tell us the Brewers are doing well
some might find that trollish.
You could talk baseball, also.
Shanghai Badger - August 12, 2008
I don't mind it
Last time I checked, we swept the shit outta the Brewers @ Wrigley North, probably made Ben Sheets cry, helped provoke some good Brewers fights, and showed Milwaukee why we are vastly superior. Bring it on, troll!
dtpollitt - August 12, 2008
I think you really need baseball
Madison Cub Fan - August 12, 2008
Yes, yes I do
