The Cubs beat the Marlins 9-2 this afternoon, winning the series (their sixth straight series win), the season series from the Marlins 4-3, and said goodbye to south Florida for 2008 (Note to Mets and Phillies: please keep the Marlins in third place!) -- and good riddance.
I mean, seriously: a rain delay when it's not raining? And yes, I well remember the non-rain delay on August 23, 1999 at Wrigley Field, when at game time, 7:05, it wasn't raining but the field stayed covered until it DID start raining at 9:15, at which time they called the game. That game, which had a sellout crowd, had to be made up as a conventional single-admission doubleheader two days later, costing the Cubs about $1 million in ticket sales (based on 1999 prices) and likely costing Ed Lynch his job. Today, they delayed the start about 20 minutes, keeping the field covered, because they thought a storm might drift over the park. It never did.
This game didn't start out propitiously for the Cubs -- they kept leaving runners on base, shades of last night, five left on in the first three innings. And let me say right now: I like Ryan Theriot's attitude and hustle. But seriously, he has to stop stealing bases, or trying to, because his 58% success rate (18 SB, 13 CS) is horrid. And what was he thinking, trying to steal third with nobody out in a scoreless game in the third inning? Even Bob Brenly, who nearly always praises Theriot, ripped him for doing that. While Theriot is having a nice year via BA and OBA, what little power he showed last year (30 doubles) is gone (only 16 so far this year). A few days off wouldn't hurt.
Meanwhile, Ryan Dempster was throwing a nice game; his first mistake wasn't really his, it was Alfonso Soriano's, for not playing Cody Ross' high drive off the wall correctly. Thinking he could catch the ball, instead it took a Fenway-like bounce away from him for a triple. If Ross is held at second, maybe he doesn't score, because the next two hitters made outs (a shoestring catch by Kosuke Fukudome helped), and maybe the Cubs then give Hanley Ramirez an intentional walk and get out of the inning. In any case, it was just one run, and Dempster gave up another one on a walk and a double in the sixth, but then got out of the inning with only one more run scoring. In the interim, Soriano had played the next ball hit off the goofy scoreboard in Miami well, and it looked like he had thrown Ramirez out at second base, but it appeared the umpire was out of position to see Mike Fontenot tag him on the leg before it reached the base. No harm, because no runs scored in that inning.
And then the Cubs exploded in the seventh, and once again, everyone contributed; the Marlins' Renyel Pinto, so good early in the year, had an 18.00 ERA in five August appearances coming into this game with six walks in three innings, and after Mike Fontenot and Reed Johnson had started the inning with hits, for some reason, Fredi Gonzalez left Pinto in to throw to four straight right-handed hitters, with predictable results: he walked Mark DeRosa, then Soriano doubled in the tying runs (past a sliding Luis Gonzalez, who might have been able to make that play five years ago, but not at two weeks shy of age 41), one out later -- for some inexplicable reason -- Gonzalez ordered Derrek Lee walked intentionally to pitch to Aramis Ramirez with the bases loaded.
Now, we all love D-Lee, but seriously, who would YOU rather face with the bases loaded? In his career, prior to today, Lee is .214/.254/.491 with 8 HR with the bases loaded; A-Ram is .337/.336/.625 with 7 HR (that's not a misprint of the OBA there -- he's got 14 bases-loaded sac flies, and 7 bases-loaded walks). Anyway, we're all glad the Marlins chose to face Ramirez, who smacked a double down the line just out of reach of third baseman Jorge Cantu, breaking the tie to give the Cubs a 4-2 lead. Ramirez, incidentally, now seems fine after that minor shakeup Thursday night in Atlanta.
The best part of watching that was seeing the close-up replay of the dugout with all the Cubs watching intently, then exploding into cheers, led by Johnson and Henry Blanco (who eventually got into the game, and singled and scored, raising his career-best BA to .292), when the ball skipped into left field. It's cool to know that they're rooting that hard for their teammates.
And then, after a sac fly by Dome, two more walks (one intentional, one drawn by ONEDEC!), Johnson (who finished 4-for-5 today and is now batting .314), batting for the second time in the inning, drove a ball to the wall in left-center, clearing the bases and finishing the 8-run inning, the 22nd time the Cubs have scored five or more runs in an inning, far and away the most in the NL (the Phillies with 17 are 2nd).
Dempster got a deserved win, his 14th (one short of his career best), with the offensive outburst and Neal Cotts, Jeff Samardzija and Carlos Marmol finished up without incident, throwing three innings of one-hit relief.
So the Cubs are back to .500 on the road at 31-31, and finish up a 5-1 road trip, their best multicity trip of the year (I say "multicity" because the four-game sweep at Milwaukee, a single-city trip, was also outstanding). Goodbye to Miami and that silly mosquito mascot. We await the result of today's Brewers-Dodgers game, at this writing led by the Dodgers 3-0 in the second after two first-inning homers, to see if the Cubs will go into the off-day up by 4.5 or 5.5 games.
Great series, great trip. Enjoy the off-day tomorrow.

First!
and damn, are you fast. Whoo hool cubs win.
flyingdonut - August 17, 2008
Thought you guys might like a fast recap.
Figured once it got to 8-2, I could start writing.
What a terrific road trip!
Al Yellon - August 17, 2008
no jinxing it!
Cubs fans started singing in the ballpark, and Marmol promptly threw six or seven balls in a row.
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008
True enough.
Maybe he needs to pitch in tenser situations.
Al Yellon - August 17, 2008
For Sure
I’m a bit uneasy with all the ‘W’ flags being waived before the game is over too. I don’t think I’m superstitious but why tempt fate?
Luigi - August 17, 2008
Me too.
It drives me crazy when people unfurl the W flags before the win is secured. Singing “Go Cubs Go” was over the line, too. All’s well that ends well, though, I suppose.
daver - August 17, 2008
even len pointed that out
w/ the always fun line “I’m not superstitious, but” lol
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
Yeah, I heard that.
I have neighbors who fly the W flag outside their houses. That’s great and all, but I go crazy when they leave the flag up after a Cubs loss. I’ve seriously considered donning my ninja gear and taking a few of them down. Fortunately, that won’t be necessary today.
daver - August 17, 2008
or, perhaps...
Al’s well that ends well?
Emelie - August 17, 2008
That works.
Or maybe “Al’s well when all ends well.”
daver - August 17, 2008
Both Well Played
LOL
CaliCub - August 17, 2008
Technically...
…. if you listen to the lyrics, the fans were singing the song at the perfect time. The Cubs are gonna win today. I’ve always thought it was silly to sing that after they’ve already won.
If Red Auerbach (sp?) were a Cub fan, he’d have been lit up already.
Goat Whisperer - August 18, 2008
Similar to singing TMOTTBG when the fans are already there....
Shanghai Badger - August 18, 2008
and then you didn't change it
when it was 9-2 ;)
nathew - August 17, 2008
lmao. Al, you're hurting the Cubs' pythagorean win percentage with that final score.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
LOL
I did forget to change it. I’ll fix it now.
Al Yellon - August 17, 2008
holy cow!
that was fast.
cubs2234 - August 17, 2008
twoth!
awesome 7th!
JoToPo - August 17, 2008
Al:
why so long to post the recap?
slowing down in your old age?
LAcarl519 - August 17, 2008
LMAO
I did have to wait for the last out! Marmol made me wait a whole extra batter!
Al Yellon - August 17, 2008
BTW, we are the same age.
how great is it to have the Cubs at .500 on the road AND to do it against the Fish!!
LAcarl519 - August 17, 2008
You bet.
It does look like they finally have the Florida monkey off their back. Great series.
Al Yellon - August 17, 2008
Probably because I didn't go this time :(
NotSure - August 17, 2008
Did you catch?
Did you catch the morning news on 7? They talked about the new Cubs book and showed your picture. Was giving the dog a bath when heard it.
puckishcubsfan - August 17, 2008
That was promoted on yesterday's game thread.
I was the one who got Will booked on the show.
Al Yellon - August 17, 2008
Oops
I was tied up in and out all day. Was supposed to go to gencom but someone screwed up the hotel reservations.
puckishcubsfan - August 17, 2008
Dang that was fast!
Well the Cubs don’t pay Fonzi for his glove but for his bat and he came through with a double to tie it up and set up Reed Johnson who put it away for us.
And Theroit needs to work on his dancing feet. But with a win like this and 2 out of 3 in Flordia I’m a happy guy.
bubbamike the one and only - August 17, 2008
Fonzi
made some decent catches. And you don’t often see him go back to the wall and jump. I was pleased to see him do that, even if he didn’t make the play. And the second time it was hit off the wall, he played it PERFECTLY. That runner was OUT at second.
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008
Ramirez WAS out.
That play didn’t cost them a run, but the first one may have.
In any case, all’s well that ends well.
Al Yellon - August 17, 2008
Theriot
I didn’t like the attempted steal (or the caught stealing!) either – but was that Teriot’s decision? I thought it was a double-steal, and assumed it came from the bench to try to get them kick-started.
Al is right thought, that his percentages are aweful.
JoToPo - August 17, 2008
Len and Bob thought
that Riot did it on his own, and Lee was just paying attention.
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008
That's possible - Lee is a smart ballplayer
JoToPo - August 17, 2008
If Theriot went on his own...
… then someone has to stop him.
Al Yellon - August 17, 2008
absolutely
JoToPo - August 17, 2008
Yes
he hasn’t shown anything close enough to good basestealing skills to be going on his own.
LT - August 17, 2008
I'll bet
Theriot thinks he can dunk too!
kentmeister - August 17, 2008
For a good 1/2 to 3/4's of this season
I have screamed: DON’T STEAL, THERIOT. Fat lot good it does. One would think one would learn from experience, but nooooo.
Emelie - August 17, 2008
we could procure
a sniper rifle from somewhere. (:P)
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008
with foam bullets
just enough to get his bleeping attention, or maybe one of those t-shirt guns…
Emelie - August 17, 2008
Just tell him
that Z will be waiting in the dugout for him if he gets CS. That should stop him.
Archie - August 18, 2008
Based on the replay..........
………..it looked like this came from the dugout. Seemed Lee broke at the same time as Theriot, so I’d say Lou has to accept the blame.
After last night’s poor showing, suspect he was looking to shake things up early.
tville - August 17, 2008
Yep, looked like a double steal....
Can’t fault Riot too much, though he got a horrible jump…
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
Well then
you actually can fault him.
The Theriot apologists are astounding. If you need a single with nobody on, he’s fine. But he does absolutely nothing else well.
Leon Durham - August 17, 2008
Bat Him 8th
and move DeRo/Fonty to 2nd in the order?
CaliCub - August 17, 2008
Theriot should be hitting 8th or 9th. Lou won't hit him 9th, so bat him 8th.
DeRo should hit 2nd.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
The Nice Thing About Theriot Batting 8th
is that, assuming he gets on and the pitcher either gets on or makes only the 1st/2nd out, Soriano has an RBI opportunity.
CaliCub - August 17, 2008
Even better
Move DeRo to second, bat Cedeno 8th, and bench Theriot
Leon Durham - August 17, 2008
Can Cedeno Match Theriot's OBP
given the same number of at bats?
CaliCub - August 17, 2008
The thing is,
Cedeno’s glove is better, and he’s widely considered to be a much better hitter. He may not post the same OBP, but will hit with some pop.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
maybe, maybe not
Riot can NOT, however, match Cedeno’s power.
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008
Or arm
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
quite.
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008
The truth has been spoken.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
seems to me that
theriot does a hell of a job getting on base before the heart of the order comes up……..thats what we need in the 2 hole.
cubsmania - August 17, 2008
and then getting thrown out on a botched steal.
sorry. couldn’t resist. I’ll sit down now.
Emelie - August 17, 2008
You rebel you. :D
sue369 - August 18, 2008
I can't imagine Lou putting a double steal on
with no outs and Ramy at the plate. Not even Ned Yost would do something that stupid. DLee just did a good job of following the lead runner.
DeRoMyHero - August 17, 2008
With the offense............
……….scuffling last night, I can see Lou making this call early in the game.
The replays pretty much verify Lee moving with the pitch. He certainly wasn’t looking at Theriot.
tville - August 17, 2008
Great Roadrip!
Now let’s go home and beat up on Dusty.

nervousCUBlover - August 17, 2008
BOOYAKASHAH!!!
I’d been monitoring this one at the pool all afternoon and got home just in time to see Marmol wrap it up. What a great offensive explosion. Great pitching by Demp and the pen. And a fine, fine 5-1 road trip. Now it’s time to follow the Dodgers-Brewers game and root for the other boys in blue.
!!!! CUBS WIN !!!!
daver - August 17, 2008
Right on, Al
could not believe you’d walk D-Lee in that spot the way he’s hit in clutch spot vs. the way Ramirez has. And the Pinto thing was just laughable—and we all know the dangers of Pintos backing up!
Lou gets his share of criticism but the days are few in which we get outmanaged. I don’t think he pushes as many buttons as he did last year (hit and run, etc.) but more often than not his decisions work out.
kentmeister - August 17, 2008
huh?
This would be relevant if DLee was up with the bases loaded, but he wasn’t. He was up with runners on 2nd/3rd (where he has hit .325/.529/.663 in his career, which, FWIW, is better than ARam’s .337/.336/.625 with the bases loaded).
With that said… I still wouldn’t have walked him. But at least get the facts straight.
big_lowitzki - August 17, 2008
Yeah.
Derrek is still a dangerous hitter. Granted, he hasn’t hit for as much power as we would like — he still is one of our most potent hitters.
Unique - August 17, 2008
I'd rather have Ramirez up there any day of the week.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
Didn't The Same Thing Happen vs. the White Sox
this year, at one of the games at Wrigley?
CaliCub - August 17, 2008
they IBB'd Lee to get to Rammy, and he crushed one, I believe.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
was trying to remember that myself.
but really? I love Derrek… but close and late with RISP? I want Rami up everyday of the week in that situation.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
not when he is in those slumps of his
DLee is fine, he just isnt a flashy player so he gets more grief then most when he isnt hitting 400. Every since his really high average years he has alot to live up to, but he still our guy
SouthsideCUBSfan - August 17, 2008
Of course.
But many here act like walking Lee to face Ramirez is like walking Blanco to face Ramirez.
Unique - August 17, 2008
Nobody is saying that. Many of you just overrate Lee.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
I didn't say anyone said that.
Unique - August 17, 2008
Acting like that, saying that. Semantics.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
Ok whatever.
Unique - August 17, 2008
BTW 'nique
Seven months ago I went through what you’re going through now. Nine days late!
Don’t worry though. Your daughter will get here eventually. Ours did and she was probably healthier for it.
Josh Timmers - August 18, 2008
True enough.
In that SITUATION, Lee was the batter to face. You pitch around him, hope he makes an out.
Al Yellon - August 17, 2008
Sure...
… that may be true.
But the paragraph you wrote doesn’t make any sense if it is talking about that SITUATION.
big_lowitzki - August 17, 2008
Yes, you're right
I should have said something like, “The Marlins probably should have pitched to Lee, since Ramirez has been a better RBI man this year”, or something like that. Instead I mixed up numbers I shouldn’t have.
Better?
Al Yellon - August 17, 2008
that would be...
…. much better.
You compared the current situation that ARam found himself in to a hypothetical situation for Derek Lee that didn’t exist in this game.
Further… based on your logic, it would have made sense to walk Lee, being that Lee had better numbers in the actual situation than ARam did in the actual situation.
big_lowitzki - August 17, 2008
I understand this.
I was making a comparison that wasn’t logical… but for some reason it made sense to me while I was writing it. Got to get more sleep.
Al Yellon - August 17, 2008
Did he
shoot your dog or something?
TCobb1911 - August 17, 2008
I think we get the point, dude.
It was an accident. Why not comment with this amount of tenacity when the facts are right?
dtpollitt - August 17, 2008
pretty sure...
… that Al can defend himself.
big_lowitzki - August 17, 2008
and...
.. comment with “tenacity” when the facts are right?
What do you want me to do… say something like:
big_lowitzki - August 17, 2008
hm.
there’s something to be said about wanting to be completely accurate in everything you do, but generally, when people notice small mistakes or lapses in logic, they tend to let it go. you’re reading a baseball discussion forum man, not a freaking dissertation for a PhD. Let it go.
ThisIsResolute - August 18, 2008
umm...
… I did let it go.
Until ya’ll jumped in and felt the need to defend Al.
big_lowitzki - August 18, 2008
No.
Al let it go. I was thinking as I read above that it was a very graceful and humble exit by Al. It could have turned into a brawl, but he just bowed out. You didn’t let it go, you pushed it until Al backed down.
Not trying to get back into it. Don’t want to get back into it. However, don’t try to take credit for letting it go.

MacPhail Was More Loyal To His Philosophies Than The Cubs
When he first got to the Cubs, MacPhail should’ve realized the resources at his disposal and spent more for top talent. But instead he held the fans hostage with his fiscally responsible, “content to compete within the division” way of running things.
It’s like the T-shirt I once saw that said “YOUR FAILED BUSINESS MODEL IS NOT MY PROBLEM”.

he just had TJ last august
they rushed Carpenter back and he’s hurt again.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love for ANYONE to come up and contribute, I just don’t want us to rush someone and risk losing him for even longer.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
Agreed, but Carpenter's value to the Cards is a little different
than Guzman and his value to this team. If we can get some quality outings from him in Sept, I’m all for it.

There are too many people complaining
I dont understand. Marmol did fine, and will be fine. Lee is a SICK SMART BALLPLAYER, and if I hear another person complain about him batting 3rd I am going to go nuts. That is a key spot in the lineup and hes playing just fine, not to mention his amazing glove. Just because he isnt going to hit 30+ HR doesnt mean he shouldnt be batting 3rd. Theriot with his OBP should be batting second. Thats where you put people who get on base all the time, but yes he needs to stop trying to steal bases. He does his job well. Soriano doesnt have a great glove but he hits like a mofo and sometimes makes up for his bad glove with his cannon arm. Our bench is sick, our coaching is the best I have ever seen in a Cubs uniform, our pitchers are all SICK (except Howry), our road record is now .500 and our home record is amongst the best. STOP COMPLAINING PEOPLE, I realize we are used to bitchin all the time about the Cubs, but not this year, EVERYTHING IS IN PLACE. We might only have one batter with 100 RBIs (Ramirez) and we had our super star out for 30+ games, but everyone is doing there part well where they are in the lineup. DONT FIX SOMETHING THAT ISNT BROKEN!!! GO CUBS!!! I am so excited being back in Chicago to go to this next homestand!

My only concern is that a Theriot baserunning gaffe or a Soriano misplay might cost us a game in the postseason, assuming we get that far.
CaliCub - August 17, 2008

complaining can be a little overbearing. wasnt in the game thread to hear it all. but, there are some issues that may need to be looked at.

and the players with less RBIs then usual is because we dont have just 1 star doing all the work. The bases are being cleared by someone new everyday, or everybody does it in 1 game, therefore the RBIs are being spread amongst the team
SouthsideCUBSfan - August 17, 2008
Some valid points, but understand that not everything is going to be sunshine and rainbows.
We’re on this site to have discussions and arguments about the Cubs, not just to praise them. This place wouldn’t be much fun if we couldn’t get together and have some good debates about our favorite team. We realize how well they’re playing, and are enjoying it, but that doesn’t preclude anyone from offering their opinions on the team or its players.
BTW, A guy with an OBP like Theriot’s would be best suited to leadoff, but since we know that won’t happen, it makes more sense to hit him 8th, in front of the pitcher.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
Agree with you 100%
it is a place for great debate, but the thing is… some of these arguments are just because some people dont know how to look at things in a positive light sometimes, you know? and you are right about Theriot, I can see him in the 8 hole, but with Piniella’s amazing coaching decisions, I will trust his decision to keep Theriot there
SouthsideCUBSfan - August 17, 2008
i agree completely
we are in first place….28 games (i think) above .500….etc etc etc….stop complaining so much people and just be happy…..theriot runs the bases just fine for the most part……sori plays defense just a hair above average….marquis is a quality #5 starter…..lets stop focusing on the few negatives we have and celebrate the many positives we do have
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
Theriot runs the bases just fine?
Can you pass some of what you’re smoking?
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
okay keep complaining about the small stuff
i love debbie downers
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
pointing out that Riot has blunders on the basepaths
is NOT being a debbie downer. thats being honest.
Riot needs to either pick his spots better or just run less.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
oh please
we just came off (what i would call) a huge road series win…..i come on here and the discussion is ripping theriot for his poor baserunning
so yes that is being a debbie downer…..had his poor baserunning cost us the game, then fine rip him all you want, but we just WON….stop finding little things to complain about
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
i agree that we had a GREAT road trip
and i’m as positive as it gets, but saying “no pointing out flaws” is irritating.
on the whole, we have a good team. but there are flaws and it SHOULD be okay to point them out among fellow fans.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
Yet last night...
…you tell everyone to “chill out” when they complained about Fonzie’s pick off?
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
amen
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
so you think it's okay to be negative?
because I believe that was the point carmen was making, which I completely agree with. Just interesting that 5 minutes ago you were arguing the other side of the coin. Being a hypocrite doesn’t lend much credence to the things you say.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
what are you talking about
bc carmen was not referring to me…..i wasn’t even on here last night……calm down haha
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
Carmen was getting on HBCG for telling people not to be negative,
the exact thing you were just telling me. Then you say “amen” to carmen’s comment? Makes sense.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
amen that the guy made a good point
stop trying to start arguements
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
Seems like you're trying to start one
HBCG is usually about as positive as they come. There is nothing wrong with pointing out shortcomings in someone’s game.
Shanghai Badger - August 17, 2008
+1
SouthsideCUBSfan - August 17, 2008
yeah
and its pretty hypocritical of me… but when they are names I’ve NEVER seen in game threads before who show up JUST to complain it pisses me off.
So yeah. I’m a hypocrit.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
Well, I don't frequent the game threads like I used to....
….but I was kind of shocked to see that from you after only a couple negative comments.
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
I was trying to nip it in the bud
but I should have just left it alone. Thats why I left when I did.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
He's developed a pattern of bad baserunning, and boneheaded plays in general.
It may not have affected the outcome of today’s game, but in the long run it does hurt the team to have a player constantly making baserunning mistakes like Theriot does. Obviously I’m thrilled with the roadtrip, and think this is a great team with great prospects for the rest of the season. That does not stop me from being able to critique problems that may eventually hurt the team.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
debbie
downer
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
Since you read what I wrote, and that was your reply, then
you really must just be an idiot. No need for this conversation to continue, because clearly you have problems comprehending anything I write. Go play in the street.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
easy easy easy sackings
no need to name call here
SouthsideCUBSfan - August 17, 2008
Just for added emphasis. But obviously, point taken.
Did you check out that link below?
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
Hang on
isnt calling someone a “debbie downer” name calling? It certainly seems just as insulting.
californiachicagoan - August 18, 2008
You really think
calling someone an idiot and telling them to go play in the street are the same as calling someone a Debbie Downer?
sue369 - August 18, 2008
again
what are you talking about…..this whole conversation started bc i made a comment that people need to chill out about the few problems we do have and to focus on the good things
my point was don’t be a debbie downer, not arguing about theriots poor base running so writing that was me making a point that despite having a good point, it still qualifies you as one
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
So, due to the fact that Ryan Theriot is a bad baserunner,
I’m a debbie downer. Got it. Let’s agree to stop talking about this now.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
i didn't say that!
you’re now making statements that simply have no logic behind them…..i agree this conversation with someone like you is going nowhere
YOU focusing on theriots poor baserunning when we just had a huge win most certainly gives you the title of debbie downer
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
Al brought it up in his recap.
That’s why it was even being discussed. Go beef to him about it.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
here's the difference btw you and him
sure he made good points about theriot being a crappy baserunner, which is fine bc ultimately he comes to the the conclusion that “no harm” was done……he’s not a debbie downer like you
he (like we all do) realizes theriots got something to work on, but does he dwell on it? no….BIG DIFFERENCE
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
I wouldn't dwell on it if he didn't do it all the time.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
ugh
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
You both have good points
but you’re both coming at this the wrong way. Yes, ALWAYS pointing out negative things IS a downer, but saying “hey this guy needs to improve this aspect” is not. So I guess it just depends on how you’re reading Sackings. I don’t see him as being a downer just a “hey I don’t like that part of this game but man am i glad we won”.
Deep breathes. Everything is FINE.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
agreed.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
read my above comment
we’re on the same page…..my point is don’t dwell on the negatives when we have so much to celebrate
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
I agree completely
I just don’t see why you’re still coming across so snippy.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
this was from today.. I think its snarky.
Since you read what I wrote, and that was your reply, then
you really must just be an idiot. No need for this conversation to continue, because clearly you have problems comprehending anything I write. Go play in the street.
Madison Cub Fan - August 17, 2008
so confused
don’t know who is talking to who here
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
I think Madison replied in the wrong spot.
I think she was tyring to reply to Sackings asking where he was insulting.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
oh and just for the record
i am infact an idiot
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
not snippy
remember i’m the only one that seems to be happy about todays game haha
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
i'm THRILLED aobut todays game
that was a great game. Demps was fantastic. Rami was as clutch as usual. it was good.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
I am.
I think you are prolly right….. sackings makes some great points, he obviously knows quite a bit about baseball. Which is great, we are all here to discuss and learn.
but my problem is w/ the snarkiness of the other comments he makes. There is no need to tell someone to go play in the street.
Madison Cub Fan - August 17, 2008
You're right, that was wrong of me to say.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
I like your way of looking at things
Sackings just sounds a lot meaner then he probably is, we all like to get our points across, and some of us are more stuborn then others. I am one of those people I am sure, but I like your way of looking at things as well. The positives of Theriot outweigh the negatives of Theriot… same for Sori and same for Lee, not to sure about fukudome though, but well see
SouthsideCUBSfan - August 17, 2008
Don't mean to come across like that, I apologize if I do.
And I agree with you about Lee and Soriano, because they are both valuable offensive players, and defensive in Lee’s case. We’ll agree to disagree on Theriot.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
I dont think you come off like that personally
I just wanted to let some people know that just because you disagree doesnt mean your are trying to kick their ass or anything… haha
SouthsideCUBSfan - August 17, 2008

It’s called a “difference of opinion” for a reason. Some just feel the need to keep arguing, like they’re finally going to “convert” the other person into agreeing with them. That rarely happens. LOL.

I think discussing Theriot here is much like
religion and politics. :)

Emelie - August 17, 2008
so d-lee hits into alot of
DP’s. should we bench him?? no, it is a downfall of his game. quit making his one downfall make him sound like someone who hurts the team, and doesnt contribute
preachermancubsfan - August 17, 2008
Theriot has a lot more than 1 downfall.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
dude,
what is your hate for theriot? i havent heard anything bad about him until yesterday, when he got CS again. maybe Lou shouldnt put the steal sign on, esp in that situation. maybe theriot doesnt want to steal.
preachermancubsfan - August 17, 2008
Preacherman, let's agree to disagree about this one.
No need to rehash the Theriot argument. Some people like him, some people don’t, and we’re not gonna convince eachother otherwise.

SouthsideCUBSfan - August 17, 2008
agreeto disagree...
it just gets old having the same convo, and then you say to drop it, whjen you brought it up
preachermancubsfan - August 17, 2008
I clearly wasn't dropping it above, I just didn't think we needed to have it again.
But since you asked, sure. Here’s my problem with Theriot’s baserunning. He constantly makes egregious baserunning gaffes, and has shown no signs that he’s getting better at it. Here’s a link: http://www.wrigleyville23.com/2008/08/tootblans-finally-catalogued-for.html
Ok, now let’s talk about other things wrong with him. He can’t field worth a damn, he gets to NOTHING outside of his fielding zone, and his arm is about as strong as a 5 yr old girl.
Now lets talk about his power, or lack thereof. All he does is hit singles. That’s it. Theriot will never really drive in runs, because he simply isn’t capable of it. All he’s good for is some empty OBP.
In conclusion, Ryan Theriot is a scrappy singles hitter who plays horrible defensively, runs the bases like Arnie from What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, and can’t get to second base. I’m happy to not drop it, and defend my point of view.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
wow dude
you totally took his comment the wrong way……..
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
and yet, despite all of this...
We’re still 28 games over .500.
:)
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
Yep, and it's been a great season.
I know many of you won’t agree with me about Theriot, and that’s fine. We’re all here to express our differing opinions, that’s what makes this place great.
P.S…. imagine how much further up we could be with a real SS :-}
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
Saying anything about Theriot:
can open… worms EVERYWHERE.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
sad part is, i'm not even a huge theriot fan
my original arguement had nothing to do with his abilities and it turned into this haha
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
I'm going to sit back here
and watch the games begin :D
Emelie - August 17, 2008

Madison Cub Fan - August 17, 2008

cubswynn - August 17, 2008
good point
Theriot and Marquis are like discussing politics and religion.
better???
:)
Madison Cub Fan - August 17, 2008
agreed 100%
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
I knew that was coming...
..or if Howry pitching was better.
…or if DWard had more PH’s
…or if Marquis was better
…or if Marmol wouldn’t have had a mid season collapse.
….etc etc etc
Hell, we’d be 124-0!!!!
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
Now that's what I'm talking about!
This team should clearly be 173-0 when all is said and done.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
and someone would still find something to complain about
oh.no.I.did.not.just.step.into.this
Even Michael Phelps and his coach said they had things they could have done better. Go figure!
flachimesa - August 17, 2008
there's always room
for improvement. I don’t think any serious athlete would ever say anything different.
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008
you're right carmen we suck
theriot sucks at running
dlee sucks at not grounding into dp’s
aramis sucks at sliding
waaaah waaaaahhh……debbie downer
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
This is why this argument continues.
I constantly defend Lee, because I think he gets too much grief for his DP’s. I love Aramis, and don’t complain about anything with him. He’s a great player. So build up your strawmen, and I will continue to burn them. I do think Theriot sucks at running, however.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
haha
this is why i think you are looking for an arguement
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
i wasn't even talking to you
i was responding to carmen and continuing what they said and you get all personal and start talking about “buring my strawmen”
aramis sucks at sliding? did you really think i was being serious that someone said that?!?!
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
Saying I'm burning your fake arguments
is not getting personal. Do you know what a strawman argument is?
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
replace personal with defensive
wrong word
and no i have no clue what the strawman argument means, could you PLEASE explain it to me
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
here I thought I broker a peace deal
:(
have at it boys…. I give up
Madison Cub Fan - August 17, 2008

Sackings is snarky. You’re obviously convinced he’s a downer.
Thats fine. But we WON. Can we not do this anymore? Please?

Madison Cub Fan - August 17, 2008
sorry,
i just like theriot. so im gonna defend him. if he wants to point out all the bad things about one person, let him, all the while EVERYONE has something that they could probably work on…no one on this team is perfect. think of the bad stuff this could do to the clubhouse if we put cedeno in as a starter…it might split the clubhouse
preachermancubsfan - August 17, 2008
Since it was asked.
All the bad things about Ryan Theriot:
He can’t pitch, either, if anyone was wondering.
cwyers - August 17, 2008
could he coach third base? :P
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008
as long as he doesn't have to get there from second...
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
Is there another team in the division lead with this type of shortstop?
Let’s look at ’em (AL 5 teams with tie in central):
Tampa – Jason Barlett, .266 BA/.304 OBP/.321 SLG
Sox – Orlando Cabrera, .270/.325/.350
Twins – Brendan Harris, .263/.322/.389
Angels – Erick Aybar, .280/.319/.388
BoSox – Julio Lugo, .268/.355/.330
NL:
Brewers – J.J. Hardy, .276/.337/.462
Mets – Jose Reyes, .305/.363/.492
DBacks – Stephen Drew, .281/.323/.481
Cubs – Ryan Theriot, .316/.396/.372
I know you can kill me in the stats deparment, cwyers, but I’m just sayin…Theriot’s offensive numbers aren’t that off from most of the AL guys, especially those who’s teams lead the division or wild card. We don’t have a Hanley or Tejada or Rollins at short, sure, but we do have a hellava wins with him on the field.
Dan
dtpollitt - August 17, 2008
Well, that leaves out defense and baserunning
Tampa – Jason Barlett, .266 BA/.304 OBP/.321 SLG 18SB/5CS
Sox – Orlando Cabrera, .270/.325/.350 18/3
Twins – Brendan Harris, .263/.322/.389 1/1
Angels – Erick Aybar, .280/.319/.388 6/2
BoSox – Julio Lugo, .268/.355/.330 12/4
NL:
Brewers – J.J. Hardy, .276/.337/.462 2/1
Mets – Jose Reyes, .305/.363/.492 40/12
DBacks – Stephen Drew, .281/.323/.481 3/1
Dodgers – Furcal, .366/..448/.597 8/2
Cubs – Ryan Theriot, .316/.396/.372 18/13
So all the NL guys out OPS Ryan, and all the AL guys (but one) out run him. They have at least 3/1 stolen base ratios, where Ryan has less than half that success rate. The only guy I would say he definitely has better all around numbers than is Harris, and he isnt even an everyday SS. He spends half his time at 2b.
And we havent even factored in D yet. Ryan has the 2nd lowest range factor of all qualified SS, and 3rd lowest zone rating.
I like Ryan. I appreciate hustle. I’m glad to have him on the team. He is good at putting the bat on the ball, and his increased walks are a godsend. He also has no range, no arm, no power, and has had a perplexing bad year stealing bases this year.
He has good and bad, and if Onedec had continued his nice start to the year, he should have taken over or at least be given more time at short. However, with the reappearance of Cedeno, Ryan’s job is safe in my mind.
The idea of replacing Soriano with Theriot at the leadoff seems like a big mistake. Espcially given the possibility that Fonzie has his wheels back. .900 OPS or .767? 12/1 SB/CS (in 350 PA) or 18/13 (in 500 PA)? I think those outweigh the .340 to .396 OBP advantage that Ryan has.
californiachicagoan - August 18, 2008
Maybe it's our
fault and we jinxed Cedeno by calling him Onedec when he had that nice turn around. I’m not a superstitious person but…..
sue369 - August 18, 2008
Jinxed him how?
He’s still a superior player to Theriot.
sackings108 - August 18, 2008
It was a joke.
Having a sense of humor on here will get you along way.
sue369 - August 18, 2008
mike was right.
sackings108 - August 18, 2008
the thing is
Theriot is a bad base stealer…. I agree, but explain the bad base running? And seriously guys the man makes $390,000 and is significantly better at OBP then anyone on the Cubs… 390, frickin, 000 dollars!!!!! in MLB!!!!!!!!!!

sweetswinger - August 17, 2008
In LA, the small critters are still rats, not mice.
So we go with snap traps w/peanut butter. Once the “rat-proofing” of the house has been violated, it is us v them. So we have no choice but the industrial strength traps. I am anti-violence, but I also don’t want anything to hurt my dogs.

Rat Zapper Ultra with a Rat Tail
No blood. Highly recommended.
Put a couple of pieces of dog food pellets (included) inside the trap, place the opening up against a wall, and leave it until the red light comes on.
Just make sure to check for the red light often. If you leave a dead rodent in there too long, the maggots take over and the smell is terrible.

A look ahead.
Cincy and then Washington at home. Two last place teams for the next six games, time to put some wins on the board here and put even more distance between the Cubs and the Brewers/Cards. Both those two teams, however, are playing “bad” teams at home as well… might have to settle for where things end up for the day, only burning off six games off the schedule.

drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008
Yep
as long as the cubs are winning, all the brewers/cards can do is keep pace.
This is “take care of business” time.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
They better be planning
on winning more than 100 because that is the only way they are catching the Cubs.

It actually got a little better now that Duncan got hurt and Dunn was traded.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
I don't think Fonzie is "horrible"
definitely not Braun level anyway. He is brutal.
Fonzie at least has the arm and speed to make up for some of his less than stellar routes.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
I just meant overall. Fonzie makes up for his pathetic attempts to play the ball with his great arm, no doubt.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
I have to take more naps
When the Marlins went up 2-0 and had men on the corners with one out , I got nervous
turned off the TV and took literal cat nap. I turned it back on and it was 5-2 Cubs with bases loaded two out and RJ at the plate. I wish I could do this every time the Cubs are down.
FYI the most disgusting non rain RAIN out of all time was a few years ago when King George of the Yankees did not like the starting pitcher and the Yanks had a day game on Lou Gehrig Day. They even had Teresa Wright the actress who played Eleanor there as part of a pre-game ceremony. WELL THE GAME WAS CALLED after the ceremony but not A DROP of rain fell the ENTIRE day and the pitcher ( I forget who) had his start skipped. The Yankees claimed radar showed it was GOING to rain ? The tens of thousands of fans who were at the game got their money back but it was despicable and the Yankees should have been fined.

Larry & Z
Al……..About 12:15 – an hour and 15 min. b4 the game Larry did a bullpen session with Z I was about 10 feet away. I couid hear some of the conversation which had to do with downward plane and arm slot, staying on top of the ball. He sure looked better then when I saw him friday and I had a good viewpoint from in back of the plate about 10 row up……………..I have some pictures ….. but hey I am not a PC genius

the shot of the dugout
was pretty cool, love seeing the players get just as excited as the fans……
couple things i noticed
lou had almost no reaction, which i’m amazed at…..don’t know if i could ever be that calm during a cubs game
and when rammy was sitting on second after the double, he looked like he was trying to play it cool and act like it was no big deal……so he looked like he was avoiding eye contact with the dugout, then when he finally did looked into the dugout he got this huge grin on his face haha….love it
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
OT Question:
When do they call a baseball game a tie? In this article w/ Woody theres this quote:
When does a game get called a tie?
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
When it's called on account of darkness
Clutch16 - August 17, 2008
Ah. Thanks.
I kept seeing tie counts in the “best starts” box but never knew who or where to ask what was up with that. :-)
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
The rules have been changed in the last couple of years...
… to avoid ties. In the past, many games were called for darkness (which is why you see more ties in the years pre-lights). After lights, you might see games called by rain which were tied at the time and beyond 5 innings.
Now, any such game (that’s tied and they give up due to rain) has to be suspended. There won’t be any more tie games.
The last Cubs tie was May 28, 1993 vs. the Expos.

ThisIsResolute - August 18, 2008
Understand That Bad Players Don't "Suck"
Typically I reserve my “you suck”s after an opposing player makes a great play, offensively or defensively. Or if the guy is flat out good. The guys that aren’t good typically don’t hurt the Cubs, so they don’t merit a “you suck” out of me.

the way he hot-dogs it around the bases.
CaliCub - August 17, 2008
I agree
I dislike the Brewers more than the Cards. Braun can rake, but an attitude. And whoever is agent is should be fired. Braun signed a ridiculously low ball contract, If I am no mistaken 5 years 14 million, something in that ballpark
Grockcubs - August 17, 2008
think it was 8
years, wasn’t it?… not sure how many dollars… i wish someone would pay me millions of dollars to play the game i love.
ThisIsResolute - August 18, 2008
8 years $45M is cheap by today's standards
Braun is signed through 2015. He is scheduled to make only $12M in the final year of his contract. That will be pennies on a dollar by 2015.
His agent: is Nez Balelo of Paragon Sports, who also represents NYY pitcher Philip Hughes.

It’s the pan asian, north-south demographic mix that I find fascinating, alongside the high-low culture. Because of this It’s an uniquely American city. It has it’s downsides, to be sure (not least celebrity worship), but overall, it’s the LA cultural amalgam that I find most intriguing.

It Can Be A Very Shallow Place
More emphasis placed on style over substance, and the facade over the underlying structure. Sort of an “impress me, or get out of my way” attitude. But once you look around enough and discover people who are real, then it’s not too bad a place to live.

Not a whole lot of “discussion” there.

Where have you seen that sort of argument?
I admit, there have been less than logical arguments in favor of Theriot, but not like that.
Al Yellon - August 17, 2008
it tends to be on the order of
“look at his batting average!”
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008
Pretty much this whole thread.
Calling people “Debbie Downers” because they question Ryan Theriot’s ability to steal bases (when to be quite frank it sure feels like an open-and-shut case of “he’s not very able”) doesn’t really feel like a discussion.
cwyers - August 17, 2008
My personal favorite response was
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
honestly
I’m not even sure what that means.
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008
Obviously the poster has inside knowledge
about the deep rut in the clubhouse that would be a result of a better player taking over the SS job. Could this be the guy who works for Ryan Theriot?
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
What really annoys me is, all the way through September last year, the offseason, spring training...
….we heard about how Cedeno couldn’t possibly be our starting shortstop, because of his “low baseball IQ” and lack of fundamental play. Now that Theriot is exhibiting a low baseball IQ and bad fundamental play, we’re supposed to ignore all of that because he’s producing, and we’re supposed to use a narrow definition of producing that’s tailored to what Ryan Theriot is good at.
cwyers - August 17, 2008
But he has a high OBP!

drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008
LOL
Archie - August 18, 2008
alright...
you guys wanna call me out on my post??
Theriot has a better fielding percentage than cedeno at shortstop (source (baseball reference.com) given, theriot has obviously gotten ALOT more play there…but in his limited play, he still hasnt shown lou that he is head and shoulders a better option, as you have said. and the CS problem…if he is so horrible, why does lou give him the greenlight? when you have such a great lineup batting after him.
also…i think that it was pretty jerky to say that just because i said something, that i have “inside information”, and “inside knowledge”. i think that it would be pretty safe to say that alot of players might be torn about who should be the starting SS. it COULD be an issue!
cedeno is not that much of a better, if at all, than theriot. he might steal bases at a better rate. (but he only has 4sb, 1 cs) but i think that this could be fixed, or at least brought to acceptable with theriot.
preachermancubsfan - August 17, 2008
Theriot was a respectable 28 of 32 SB last year
Something’s just not clicking with his wheels this year

Yah...but.....
How many hits get thru the left side when the riot is out there that ONEDEC might likely make a play on?
kcjones - August 17, 2008
This debate reminds me of SNK Baseball Stars
where some players have higher ratings in hitting (batting average), batting (power/home runs), running (base running speed) and defense (defensive running and throwing skills).
There were also luck and “prestige points” or money points.

halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
This is why I like our Cubs
Bullpen, minus Howrys ups and downs, mostly downs, Cubs have a solid pen, and the Brewers don’t
Grockcubs - August 17, 2008
We have the deepest pitching the bigs I think.
Some teams may be better at the front or back ends, but we have the most quality arms, I think.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
I agree
sometimes I have to keep myself in check and not get to over confident, but this is the best pitching the Cubs have had since I been a fan since 1970
Grockcubs - August 17, 2008
Only 1.5 groaners in the bunch
hard to complain
Emelie - August 17, 2008
1989 Cub Pitching Was Decent
Team ERA around 3.4, no?
Still I dig what you’re saying re: 1970. Four very reliable and durable starters, unlike the 1984 staff that all hit the DL the following year and the brittle front end of the 2003-2004 rotation.
CaliCub - August 17, 2008
Name more than 4 pitchers from that team....
off the top of your head w/o looking it up…..
kcjones - August 17, 2008
Game On!
1970: Fergie Jenkins, Kenny Holtzman, Bill Hands, Milt Pappas, Joe Decker, Phil Regan, Larry Gura, Jim Colborn, Ted Abernathy
1984: Rick Sutcliffe, Steve Trout, Dennis Eckersley, Scott Sanderson, Dick Ruthven, Lee Smith, Tim Stoddard, Warren Brusstar, Rich Bordi
1989: Greg Maddux, Rick Sutcliffe, Mike Bielecki, Steve Wilson, Paul Kilgus, Calvin Schiraldi, Mitch Williams
CaliCub - August 17, 2008
I thought Les Lancaster
Piched all innins not pitched by wild thing, madddux, Sutcliffe or Bielecki
kcjones - August 17, 2008
Is it wrong to find pleasure
In seeing the Red Sox get thier punkasses kicked 15-4?
Galvan316 - August 17, 2008
Nah, it's ok
i was at Fenway a couple of weeks ago for a game. they are all reallll cocky over there now. they’re all look, “ooh look at us, we won the world series”, yada yada,
they also have the audacity to have a sign there that says “Welcome to Fenway Park, AMERICA’S MOST BELOVED BALLPARK”
what??
also, that place is old and decrepit. it makes Wrigley Field look like the Space Shuttle.
nervousCUBlover - August 17, 2008
Im no Yankee fan
But Ill tell you this….
Im so sick of the Yankees/Red Sox crap.
Galvan316 - August 17, 2008
+1 googol
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
that actual spelling of "googol" has been quite long forgotten!
nervousCUBlover - August 17, 2008
And it's my job
as a math teacher, to never let it be forgotten :-)
My job is done here…(rides off into the sunset)
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
really?
i find the whole thing fascinating.
And it makes me appreciate our rivals (the cards) much more. At least we can hate the other team w/o being jackasses about it.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
The Red Sox are like dirt poor people that just won the lottery (twice)
… and don’t know how to handle it…
as opposed to, myself, who, around October 30, 2008, will celebrate the Cubs Championship with a quiet dignity consisting of a 3 week binge of arson, cocaine, champagne, tequilla, high priced hookers, major damage to several hotel rooms, after which I will emerge sometime around Thanksgiving, still, with a huge grin on my face.
nervousCUBlover - August 17, 2008
Me...it'll be that long until
I pick my jaw off the floor from the shock of the Cubs winning it all.
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
I Will Finally Be Able To Watch The Cubs In Peace
No pacing around, no slamming the TV when they lose, no worrying about what the Cards and Brewers are up to, and no more agonizing over why things happened the way they did in 2003, 1984, 1969….
CaliCub - August 17, 2008
I just want
the commemorative DVD to watch. Over and over and over and over.
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008
I'm still watching super bowl XX
kcjones - August 17, 2008
That was the lasst one, wasn't it?
kcjones - August 17, 2008
we should hook up
daily2b - August 18, 2008
DODGERS WIN!
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008
OH NO!! What would ESPN do
If The Yankees AND Red Sox miss the playoffs?
Galvan316 - August 17, 2008
they will have no more baseball tonight!
SouthsideCUBSfan - August 17, 2008
Probably become ESPN Classic 2
and show reruns of Boston or Skankees matchups
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
ugh.
they’d focus on the cubs… which i think would be awful. I LIKE flying under the radar and being expected to win day to day.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
I doubt that
Probably the Dodgers…. who Id love to see win the NL West btw.
Arizona scares me
Galvan316 - August 17, 2008
I hate the short series...
but no one really scares me. Z/Harden/Demps thats a pretty good 3 headed monster.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
yep
Nice to see road wins and comebacks too. I’m feeling good right now
chitownhawkeye - August 17, 2008

carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
yikes i'm so creeped out right now
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
Why because I asked people to im me?
Doesnt make much sense to me
Galvan316 - August 17, 2008
no but the way you guys were talking about halfblind
as if she wouldn’t hear it…..nevermind
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
don't worry
she can only sort of read. :-P
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
I tend more to giggle at it then be creeped out
but I am also guessing being female has something to do with that.
Madison Cub Fan - August 17, 2008
Ah, the internet
Where the men are men, the women are men, and really cute teenagers are FBI agents
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
nice
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
It's not creepy, cubswynn
Galvan doesn’t hide his love for HBCG
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
my mother always said
if you love ‘em, you gotta tell ’em….and i haven’t heard that yet
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
Did you mother stutter?
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
over my head
or you missed on that one
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
you put "my mother said" twice...
…without anything after it….
or my computer is hiccuping…
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
yah i have no idea what you're talking about
must be your puter
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
yep, it was...
just refreshed…..D’oh
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
talk about my mother again
and you’ll get the sackings treatment!
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
LOL
i might be around on yahoo later… but frankly I’m probably going to avoid the computer most of the night.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
and by "computer" she means "galvan"
Just kidding you two lovebirds!!! :) (Suddenly in a real silly mood, must be that full game we just gained!)
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
lol
yay for a silly carmen. much better than grumpy carmen…:-)
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
true dat
plus I like the fact we’re facing the Reds and Nats this week….. :)
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
Yep. The Reds w/o Adam Dunn too.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
And no Griffey
And no Volquez
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
Do we miss Volquez?
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
Believe so
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
He hasn't been as near as dominating the 2nd half..
…but we’ll take it.
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
Confirmed
He pitched today, so we won’t see him in this series
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
awesome
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
And even better
we face Arroyo
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
Who all do we get?
Cueto, Arroyo and?
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
Fogg?
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
Harang
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
I didnt think that was pretty nice :(
Im just kinda lonely, and wanted to chat with some Cubs fans
Galvan316 - August 17, 2008
just teasing ya, Galvan...
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
awww poor galvan
Madison Cub Fan - August 17, 2008
sorry, really didn't mean it like that
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
Its not you.
I just need to save my eyes. Too much computer time = migraines.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
I can relate to that
I was just looking for peeps to chat with…. If you imed me cool…. But I was just looking for someone to chat with.
Galvan316 - August 17, 2008
I know.
I just wanted you to know it wasn’t personal.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
if this is rude, i apologize
but halfblind, what does your name mean?
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
she's an umpire
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
lol!
Emelie - August 17, 2008
BOOM, BABY!
LOL!
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008
not rude.
I’m legally blind in my left eye & blind in my right eye.
I only put it in my screen name b/c I have a tendency to make blind jokes and the last board I was on I got flamed for “being mean to blind people” and frankly it was irritating.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
ah....i was always curious
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
yep.
no problem.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
Do You Use a Voice-Prompt Computer
that verbalizes the content for you?
CaliCub - August 17, 2008
I do have a screen reader
but for the most part its a bigger hassle than its worth for me. I use large print & reading glasses.
I see decently enough out of my left eye to read.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
Sounds Good
CaliCub - August 17, 2008
I wondered myself
I kind of wondered myself and thank you for telling us.
puckishcubsfan - August 17, 2008
an interesting fanpost would be where did you pick your screen name
we talk to each other all the time. something simple like that I’ve ponder on many occosions.
Madison Cub Fan - August 17, 2008
that'd be a fun off day thread.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
My real name is Carmen Fanzone
I played for the Cubs in the early 70’s.
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
Okay, not really...
….I started watching the Cubs in the 70’s as a kid and picked one of the more unfamous players that I can remember. It was between this and Tom Dettore.
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
my license plate is soon to be
cubswyn (since cubswin was already taken)
not sure why i added an extra n to this, i think cubswyn was taken already
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
You could try
CUB5WIN or CU65WIN or CUBSW1N
Just a thought
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
thought about that
but i liked cubswyn better…dunno why….i was close to going with cubsw1n
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
oh i think i wasn't clear
i choice cubswynn for my screen name bc my new license plate is gonna be cubswyn….i wanted cubswin for my license plate, but it was already taken
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
Online screen names
are about the closest I will get to affording a vanity plate
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
really?
they are really cheap in iowa
first time fee is $25
and every year after that they are only $5 more to renew
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
Hmmm...
I’ll check AZ prices.
Still, I’m a teacher…with children…and a budget. (sigh)
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
Not in Illinois
where the numerals must come after the letters. A lot of states allow numerals and letters to be intermingled though.
ChipSet - August 17, 2008
CALIfornia CUB fan
CaliCub - August 17, 2008
August
What I love about August is that after the Cubs spanked the Brewers at the end of July, the Brewers have played good baseball, gone .688 in August and find themselves a half game further behind the Cubs. It has to be frustrating to play good ball and yet lose ground.
Charlemagne - August 17, 2008
Frustrating
Yes they must be frustrated. Too bad so sad.
puckishcubsfan - August 17, 2008
Chinese Food tonight

Galvan316 - August 17, 2008
Then you would hate
deep-fried Oreos
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
the new one this year is
deep fried salad and i have no clue how they do that one
cubswynn - August 17, 2008
Didn't a fair come up with
deep-fried Coca-Cola a few years back? I don’t remember how they did it, but still…
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
wow
didn’t hear that one
cubswynn - August 17, 2008

It’s not that tough.
Clutch16 - August 17, 2008
Aramis is spanish for clutch
he wears 16.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
Got it in one.
Clutch16 - August 17, 2008
So
Aramis was known as ‘the clutch Musketeer’? ;-)
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
Clutchy McClutcherson
= Aramis Ramirez.
Archie - August 18, 2008
You've been driving a car with a stick since you were 16?

Screenname
I used to be cubbiegirlshamus everywhere which combines Trixie Belden and the Cubs. (Trixie aka schoolgirl shamus)
Kerrysotherwife came from people saying I must be married to Kerry because I kept defending him on other forums.
My current was hoping the Cubs would be in the series before 100 years.
puckishcubsfan - August 17, 2008
Trixie As In The Lincoln Park Variety?
CaliCub - August 17, 2008
NO
No. Trixie is a mystery series like Nancy Drew but she was 13 when it began.
My nickname for Ryan Dempster has a Trixie connection. I call him “Jim” because in the books Trixie’s special friend is a green eyed redhead like Ryan.
puckishcubsfan - August 17, 2008
Gotcha
I wanted to make sure before I asked you about your VW Jetta and your three-wheeled baby stroller and how much money your stockbroker boyfriend-husband makes. LOL
CaliCub - August 17, 2008
Speaking "personal nicknames" for players
When DeRo was a Brave, one ex’s mother liked to call him “Pon”.
I may never forgive her for that pun.
Clutch16 - August 17, 2008
Trixie Belden?
Since we both know who she is, that must mean…well, we’re old, lol
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
Yes
She like WGN is 60 this year.
puckishcubsfan - August 17, 2008
And I

spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
40
Turned 40 on July 7th.
Read the books faithfully as a child and still love them today.
puckishcubsfan - August 17, 2008
Grew up on
Hardy Boys, Danny Dunn and Encyclopedia Brown, myself
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
I was weird
I prefered the Hardy Boys to the perfect Nancy Drew even though I’m a girl but Trixie rules!
I belong to an extensive Trixie fan group. We have an annual convention type event and when we drove by a group in a parking lot obviously drunk as skunks and acting badly we called it “Must be Nancy Drew convention”
puckishcubsfan - August 17, 2008
Or
the Bobbsey Twins Convention ;-)
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
Frazier Thomas?

Can anyone tell me
Why the Phillies vs Padres game is Sunday Night Baseball tonight??
What the hell is that
Galvan316 - August 17, 2008
So Cub fans
aren’t subjected to Joe Morgan yet again
spoiledcubbage - August 17, 2008
Because
Because if they didn’t show Padres vs Phillies the terrorists win!
Actually the real reason Phelps isn’t swimming tonight is they knew that Phillies/Padres was so compelling nobody would watch!
puckishcubsfan - August 17, 2008
Great Pic
Way to go Dodgers!
carmen_fanzone - August 17, 2008
Weird thought
Weird thought of the day for me. I wonder how many players know the anthem having heard it a zillion times?

hi Dan
sue369 - August 17, 2008
How you doin?
Watchin Olympics…as usual…
dtpollitt - August 17, 2008
What'd you think of the game?
Is this Theriot discussion that big of a deal? Did Demp look solid? And is Rammy alright?
dtpollitt - August 17, 2008
Demp made one mistake
Rammy looked very good — and very relieved — to be hitting again.
The Riot discussion is eternal, and I didn’t even get involved in it this time.
The game was frakkin’ GREAT!
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008

I just checked
Google Maps tells me Kansas is far from Chicago.

Off the wall question, but...
…have you done much in the way of factor analysis?
cwyers - August 17, 2008
No, not yet.
I’m fairly certain I’m going to pursue a minor in statistical research. I’ve only taken intro, meta-analysis, and ANOVA so far, and am taking regression this fall, and probably multivariate and maybe factor analysis next semester. Then it gets fun with hierarchical linear modeling and structural equation modeling.
So, no, factor analysis to come soon. Why, what you working on?
Dan
dtpollitt - August 17, 2008
Fielding scouting reports.
Got ratings of different fielders for different skills (instincts, first step, arm strength, throw accuracy, etc.) and trying to cut down on the number of variables I’m working with in the regression analysis. (Some things are so highly correlated with each other, like first step and speed, that it gives the regression model fits.)
I’ve done a factor analysis in GNU R that I think looks right (it seems to group the skills into groups that make sense from a baseball perspective) but was curious about a few things. I’ll do some more reading and see if I can get Pizza Cutter to help me out with the rest.
cwyers - August 17, 2008
Yeah, sorry.
Bout one semester over my head at this point, and a semester of 900 level courses is a lot of learning. I read a good few articles on factor analysis every month, but am not knowledgeable on how to do them myself quite yet.
Dan

Whatup homefrizzles
Just got back from dinner… see I was slandered by my boy preacherman and that bum cubswynn for my Theriot logic. That argument is officially a nonstarter w/ me from here on out. I swear off all Theriot debate, and you can all hold me too that.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
The problem w/ swearing off the Theriot debate is that you never know when one is going to start
usually I’ll say “hm, I figured Theriot would get a day off here” and then I suddenly get called a Theriot hater. The whole thing is pretty ridiculous.
halfblindcubbiegirl - August 17, 2008
yes, yes it is. You are not allowed to make a valid argument against him, because
then you are a debbie downer, or a Theriot hater, etc. Yet these same people love to jump on Soriano, an actual good hitter…. I just don’t get it.
So I’ll rephrase my original point: I’ll attempt to stay out of all Theriot related arguments from here on out. If I see anything that’s just too ridiculous, it may be hard to pass up.
sackings108 - August 17, 2008
hmmm...that lasted all of 28 minutes
just couldn’t stay away from the topic, heh?
flachimesa - August 17, 2008
slandered? really?
be a little bit more sensitive why don’t you
obviously the debbie downer title is a sore subject for you or maybe it “hurts so bad” bc there is some truth to it
i said it once before and i’ll say it again…..i don’t even really disagree with your argument, however i just think coming on here and immediately bashing any cub right after a great win is being a debbie downer
and i like how you say in one breath that i’m not allowed to call you a debbie downer bc you’re expressing your opinion and in the next breath call me a bum for expressing an opinion about you
finally i’m the biggest supported of sori i know, so i hope that wasn’t directed at me
cubswynn - August 18, 2008
Not sure there was a lot of "slandering"...
It’s pretty open, and just because Riot is a hotly debated topic doesn’t mean that one has to take offense to not agreeing with one’s point of view. Looks like it’s been mostly discussion so far.
dtpollitt - August 17, 2008
sorry, i didnt mean to flame you...
i was pretty angry…
apologies…
this was the first time i ever involved myself in a theriot debate, and i didnt know what i was getting myself into…
preachermancubsfan - August 17, 2008
wasn't it a
double steal today?? that makes me think that is was a Lou call,,not just Riot taking off on his own.
cozmotaylor123 - August 17, 2008
I wonder if
Lou talked about it in the post-game press room. Seems like no one here got a very good look at Lee, so we can’t tell if he was running from the pitch, or if he was watching Riot.
drewishdrewid - August 17, 2008
its a valid ? that might
get asked in the post game…..40 minutes till I can catch sportsnite…
cozmotaylor123 - August 17, 2008
Not to be a Debbie Downer, but Theriot's basestealing...
…is bad. And that’s important.
In a 5 RPG environment, the value of a SB is roughly 0.195 runs. A CS is -0.486 runs. (I’m working on getting some better linear weights values together, but that’ll do for now.)
18 * .195 = 3.51 runs
13*-.486 = -6.318 runs
Total = -2.808 runs
Which, well, for a guy that’s 2.6 runs above average in hitting…
As for the “Was it a double steal or wasn’t it?” the question is almost academic. Either Theriot is a bad basestealer and wildly selfish, or Theriot is a bad basestealer and Lou is an idiot. Note the common factor between those two options!
cwyers - August 17, 2008
For comparative purposes, will you run the same numbers for 2006 Cedeno
when he was the starting SS and was caught stealing 8 times in 16 attempts?
I know Cedeno batted 245 / .271 / .339 in 2006 (the last year he had a starting role in the lineup).
Is the argument that Cedeno would be a better candidate for starting SS this season or that the Cubs need to find a SS this off-season?
flachimesa - August 17, 2008
Didn't James say that steals are irrelevant...
…in the long-run and shouldn’t be used, especially when an out is at stake?
dtpollitt - August 17, 2008
I don't believe he did.
And to be honest the work that I do follows a lot more of Pete Palmer than Bill James, so I’m not the right person to ask.
The stolen base can be valuable, if you’re good at it. And the lower the run environment, the more valuable the steal is. The reason you saw a lot more stolen bases years ago wasn’t because they were dumber then, necessarily, but because they were a much more valuable play in that context.

Meh.
I’m going to bed. We can talk abou this tomororw. See ya yers.

-2.8 runs
Good to know people are really getting up in arms over such an ENORMOUS number. I’ll bet the Cubs don’t even make the playoffs because Theriot sucks so bad.
dr stabbingworth - August 18, 2008
you're missing the point.
People talk about how great Riot is because of his OBP, and how many runs he scores being driven in by Lee, Rami, Soto, etc.
That statistic translates into about 2.6 runs.
However, his caught-stealing rate costs the team about 2.8 runs.
That, combined with his poor power, his weak arm, and his inability to get to balls through the left side illustrates that Ryan Theriot costs the team runs.
drewishdrewid - August 18, 2008
but is he the lesser of two evils? or should he be moved to the 8 hole?
My take is we’re winning with him in the lineup. Now is not the time to experiment with a change or platoon system at SS or batting order.
flachimesa - August 18, 2008
I don't disagree wtih that
although it’s not like Lou ever has a lineup locked in stone.
At this point, I think the best we can hope for is that Cedeno has a VERY good off-season, and excels at ST next year, and takes the job away from Riot — something he is perfectly capable of doing.
drewishdrewid - August 18, 2008
Maybe
Until he proves that he can play at the ONEDEC level every day, then Theriot is a better player. I see flashes of brilliance in Cedeno, and then he overslides second base on a walk. I am a strong believer in sabermetrics, however, Cedeno has not proved (or been given the chance to prove) that he can perform at a high level day in and day out.
I think Lou would have given Cedeno the chance to play every day if he thought he deserved it. Clearly Lou doesn’t think that. He barely plays Cedeno. Since I don’t know nearly as much as Lou, I think I’m going to trust him on this one.
dr stabbingworth - August 18, 2008
Ok Theriot had a rough day
And likely won’t be stealing any bases soon. He gets on base way too often and needs to bridle his enthusiasm. Enuf said for now. Hey how about that Reed Johnson……..thank you Bluejays!!!

I can't believe I just read every comment in this thread.

ha
well, it’s amazing how much complaining there can be after a pretty awesome 5-1 roadtrip. also amazing how ppl can rip on Theriot after he goes 8 for 23, 2 RBI, 1 SB on said six game road trip. but he got caught stealing!!! OMG!! bench him. and D-Lee too! I saw him ground into a DP.
some people just need to calm down. I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed the last six games.

nothing directed at you, btw
I just finished reading all the comments as well, that’s all :)
PrincetonCubs - August 17, 2008
I understand.
I declared myself Switzerland in the Great Theriot Wars weeks ago. I readily recognize his glaring shortcomings as a baseball player, but I don’t think he’s going anywhere. So I’m going to abstain from arguing about him with anyone. In any case, today was a great day to be a Cubs fan – that’s for sure.

+1 more, Princeton
Like just about any internet forum, seems there are people who could stand to add “let’s agree to disagree” to their vocabulary.

Man, I’m just sooo thrilled to get the last post…
P.S. I hate off days. Can’t they do an intrasquad game or something?

8-Run Inning
That was sweet to get an 8-run inning against the Marlins to take the lead and win the game.
memphiscub - August 18, 2008
Great road trip
Who isn’t stoked that we went 5-1 on a trip, where I sort of thought we’d go 3-3 before it began.
28 games over .500 – how totally awesome is THAT!
Aaaaand now we play 9 games against the worst the NL has to offer – the Reds, Nats and Pirates. Time to fatten up, Cubbies, while the Brewers get the Astros, Pirates and Cardinals over the same period.
If we can stretch that record to 35 games over .500, I think it would be fantastic! Let’s let the Brewers keep playing catch up – winning, but not making up any ground!

Is there really only 6 weeks left of the regular season?
I feel like every summer and season goes faster. I’m starting to plan my ST trip in March. The next 6-10 weeks could be some unbelievable times.
Couldn’t ask for anything more than a 5-1 road trip. Nice to see the bullpen has gotten back on track, what an addition the Shark has been thus far.
Enjoy the day off!

Silly sign
Did anyone notice the Marlins fan (an oxymoron) holding the Completely Useless By September sign? Yeah, haha, funny maybe 15 years ago.

also,
funny when the fish are getting blown out.

and when "Completely" is spelled wrong on the sign
it said “Completly”

Completly
Yeah, I forgot about that. Len made a dismissive but funny comment.
There’s a south FL joke in there somewhere, but I’ll let it go.
