But a ball in virtually the same place was called a strike on the previous pitch. That forced him to swing at it, maybe get a piece of it and foul it off.
Having the presence of mind to never swing at a non-strike, even if it was called a strike the previous pitch. Odds are the ump knows he messed up on the previous call so he gets it right the next time. Then it’s bases loaded and no outs.
I would like to let Miller know that their beer is swill and no self respecting drinker would bother with it until they were so hammered that they couldn’t taste it.
It is games like these that prevent me from getting "Giggly"
When the Cubs are on, they are remarkable. But there have been too many games like this where they just haven’t gotten the clutch hit, despite repeated opportunities. It’s OK in the regular season, but it concerns me when we get to October.
I’m not sure how well it portends to October, assuming we get there. There seems to have been as many games this season where the Cubs have found a way to win when facing a tough situation (ie the four game sweep in Milwaukee). What will be interesting to see is how the Cubs rebound tomorrow – if the offense goes back to being patient and laying off the bad pitches then that’s a sign they can rebound after a poor performance.
however, I would rather see the team capitalize on their early opportunities and not have to count on coming back against another team’s bullpen. Great endings are fine, but I’ll take boring blowouts any day….
But weird things have happened. All’s I was saying is that although today was sucky, it really has no bearing on how well we do against Arizona or the Brewers in the postseason. You said it best – championship teams have been as flat during an LCS or a World Series. Let’s see how they bounce back tomorrow, hopefully with a ton of walks and hits.
“Fontenot and Lee have begun waving white hankerchiefs towards the mound and are walking off the field. They have surrendered like the French to a barrage of Howry grooved four-seamers.”
but Bob Howry ranks #1 in the NL in the category of Inherited Runners Scored. Of course, when he starts the inning, it’s quite another story sometimes.
it is supposed to weaken slightly before it makes landfall, but thats still not gonna help. We vacation in Gulf Shores AL every summer. it makes me sick to think of everythig I love there being destroyed. The gulf coast is so beautiful and so many lives are in danger. I guess thats the risk you take to live there.
back to how it was before Ivan. Seems every summer there is more and more construction and less empty lots and rubble. No where deserves to be hit by this storm, but I would be sick if my vaca place got totally wiped out again.
an offical about evacuations etc and it seems like things are moving pretty smoothly so far and they are all ready evacuating high risk areas and the elderly and handicapped. I can’t imagine miles and miles of Interstate with all four lanes converted to northbound. Would be strange to drive on the wrong side!
lots of people living in FEMA trailers. How sad is that. I can tell ya one thing, if my ass lived anywhere near there, they wouldn’t have to tell me twice to evacuate after the disaster that was Katrina! Even if the same thing happens again, I am betting more people leave the city and the govenment is better prepared to help them get out. Lets hope!
It was heartbreaking that so many cats and dogs were left behind. Although that’s how we got our 3rd dog – she was abandoned during Katrina and we adopted her.
In fact I promised myself that I wouldn’t, but when this team wins so much, it makes it so hard! I hate to use the ol’ “you can’t win em all” phrase, but that’s as good as I can do. And yes they get em tomorrow!
Apologies if I came off as a ledge jumper or troll or vulture. I don’t think this starts a vintage 1969 slide or anything like that. Just a pain in the butt on a hot, humid day.
but I think we can all be forgiven for being a bit spoiled by this team. We’ve come to expect perfection. I was at the Nationals opener last week when we got lit up by a far inferior team, and then they reeled off 7 in a row after that. Let’s see what happens tomorrow…
Looking back I sounded as if every strikeout or pop-out was life threatening. Maybe it’s time to stay out of game threads altogether, because constant complaining is neither fair or fun to hear.
first?

He had to swing at that
The ump called the outside-corner strike. Pitch was too close to take.
Give Romero credit. He did his job.

That Would NOT Have Been Called A Strike
Reed choked there, trying too hard.

CaliCub - August 30, 2008

Again even if they dont
But I like Z on the mound. We still split the series 2-2 I like that in a 4 gamer

Especially when they didnt show everyone
How good they really are
cubsfaninatl - August 30, 2008
lack of clutch hitting today
but that’s how the game goes sometimes.

Dick Stockton
suggested FOX may be bad luck to the Cubs… :)

Bad Umpiring
Makes you wonder if these guys were feeling the heat of the Samardzija/Howard call yesterday and decided to make it up to Philly today.
CaliCub - August 30, 2008
no, i think they sucked equally bad for each team
cubsfaninatl - August 30, 2008
We'll get 'em tomorrow.
sue369 - August 30, 2008
I like the way you think ;)

Good news
We probably won’t have to see Cotts and Howry tomorrow.

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did anyone see that blonde with her mouth open making a very suggestive hand gesture during the credits?!!?!?!
AHAHAHAHAHA FOX sucks!
Galvan316 - August 30, 2008
I hate to get greedy.
In fact I promised myself that I wouldn’t, but when this team wins so much, it makes it so hard! I hate to use the ol’ “you can’t win em all” phrase, but that’s as good as I can do. And yes they get em tomorrow!

Today Was Sucky
Apologies if I came off as a ledge jumper or troll or vulture. I don’t think this starts a vintage 1969 slide or anything like that. Just a pain in the butt on a hot, humid day.
CaliCub - August 30, 2008
I wasn't in the thread today,
but I think we can all be forgiven for being a bit spoiled by this team. We’ve come to expect perfection. I was at the Nationals opener last week when we got lit up by a far inferior team, and then they reeled off 7 in a row after that. Let’s see what happens tomorrow…
Goodie1969 - August 30, 2008
Thanks
Looking back I sounded as if every strikeout or pop-out was life threatening. Maybe it’s time to stay out of game threads altogether, because constant complaining is neither fair or fun to hear.

Good news:
Astros are lighting up the Cards (6-3).
Bad news: it’s still the first inning. That could be a high-scoring affair…
