There was a time in 2002 when Bobby Cox regarded DeRo’s glove at SS so highly that he moved Furcal to 2B so that DeRo could play SS.
He lacks GG range, but he has everything else a SS needs — strong arm, range on popups (more important in front of Sori than Dome), and great footwork on the pivot.
My first introduction to AZ was in August. I got out of the car in Flag and it was gorgeous. I got out again in Mesa, and I wondered who left the oven door open.
What does several million dollars buy you?
Late innings/close games 6-34, 3RBI, .176 ave, .243 OBP
Two outs in the inning 26-102, 18 RBI .255 ave, .350 OBP
Behind in the count 27-141, 22 RBI, .191 Ave, .194 OBP
AB behind in the count – 141. Ahead in the count 87
but the Cubs lost the past two days more than the Phillies won. Once the Cubs start taking their walks and stop overswinging (like they did against CC and Sheets up in Milwaukee last month), they can handled anyone’s pitching just fine.
Like they were thinking “How dare the Phillies play us so tough?” Then when they tried to turn it on, they ended up pressing and having lots of panicky defensive at-bats.
it had nothing to do with being surprised by competition, but more to do with not getting the big hits. Look, they left 9 on yesterday and had what, 12 hits, today? It’s 2 games, shockingly, it doesn’t all fall into place e veryday.
Frankly, I’ll take this Cubs teams chances with 2 outs against Jayson Werth 160 more games. Dude got white-hot, it happens.
it just exaggerates any deficiencies in the bullpen (although Howry actually wasn’t that bad these last two games). The pitchers think they have to be perfect.
Nagin’s a tool that says remarkably stupid things, but he’s right. People aren’t being herded into the Superdome, they’ve had more than enough resources and notice to get the hell out. Crikey, they were racing today at Louisiana Downs!
Shockingly, there were some lessons learned from the Katrina debacle and many of those mistakes are not being repeated.

That first play looked pretty good.

I said it in the last thread...
DeRo is a natural SS, light-years better than Riot.
Lou only plays Riot at SS because he couldn’t justify playing that bat anywhere else.

I wouldn't have thought you are right until I saw DeRo's throw to first just now.
Indeed, he might be a better defensive SS than Theriot.

Let me say it this way...

Cubs Seemed Frustrated The Past Couple Days
Like they were thinking “How dare the Phillies play us so tough?” Then when they tried to turn it on, they ended up pressing and having lots of panicky defensive at-bats.
CaliCub - August 31, 2008
Disagree
it had nothing to do with being surprised by competition, but more to do with not getting the big hits.
Gibbon Jockey - August 31, 2008
Agree - No Big Hits
And what made it worse is that they tried to force getting the big hit, which just makes things worse.
CaliCub - August 31, 2008
I'll agree with losing patience
compounding the problem was the fact that it was a couple runs each time – nothing insurmountable if they stay patient. They didn’t and they lost.
Hopefully, the team will look at that, realize they didn’t show the hitting patience they’ve displayed all year, and regroup.
Color me not worried.
Gibbon Jockey - August 31, 2008
And when they don't get those hits
it just exaggerates any deficiencies in the bullpen (although Howry actually wasn’t that bad these last two games). The pitchers think they have to be perfect.
