Hi everyone.
We were watching the radars on our phones in the bleachers and saw lightning shows out to the west, and figured that at the first sign of rain, the game would be delayed and not resumed. So, once the field was covered, I left.
It's virtually certain they won't resume tonight, not with the heavy rain -- probably the heaviest I've seen since almost 20 years ago to the day, August 8, 1988, the day of the first scheduled night game. I believe -- and someone correct me if I'm wrong -- that after a certain period of time goes by, the game can and will be suspended and resumed at noon tomorrow. This might go to the Cubs' advantage, as they were having a lot of trouble hitting Brian Moehler, and they could send Sean Marshall out there to start the sixth as a fresh pitcher who could go three or four innings if necessary.
Stay safe, everyone, if you're in northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin or northern Indiana -- this is nasty stuff going through; tornado sirens were going off in Lakeview near Wrigley Field, the first time I can remember them going off except for test purposes.
I'll update in the morning.

UPDATED - TORNADO IN PORTER COUNTY, IN
... A Tornado Warning remains in effect until 915 PM CDT for northern
Porter and east Central Lake counties…
At 841 PM… National Weather Service Doppler radar continued to
indicate a tornado. This tornado was located near Wheeler… moving
east at 44 mph. A trained spotter reported a funnel cloud in
Griffith and measured 80 mph winds.
The tornado will be near…
Valparaiso… Lincoln Hills… Chesterton… and 7 miles south of
Porter by 850 PM…
kvpz by 855 PM…
Do not use your car to try to outrun a tornado. Cars are easily
tossed around by tornado winds. If you are caught in the path of a
tornado… leave the car and go to a strong building. If no safe
structure is nearby… seek shelter in a ditch or low spot and cover
your head.

Tornado in Elmhurst...
The Tribune is reporting a Tornado in Elmhurst earlier. I’m not too far from there and it was nasty out.
CubsBullsBears - August 4, 2008
Thanks to all for the weather updates.
I’m on the north side of the city and it’s pouring rain with lots of lightning and windy, but no tornadic activity here at the moment.
Al Yellon - August 4, 2008
scary night in Chicago
That storm that rolled through here was bad! I hope they call this a suspended game and not a rain shortened astros win. There is a precedent each way from what I can tell
gocubsgo22 - August 4, 2008
Hey Al, quick question
If they do call the game on account of weather, are you sure they will resume tomorrow and not award the win to houston?
Thought they called games after 6 innings?
cubsonWGN4ever - August 4, 2008
confused too..
is the rule 5 and a half innings? they were starting the top of the sixth, ie… had only played 5 full innings. don’t know the rule either
cubbiefanTN - August 4, 2008
I think the rule was changed within the last year or two...
... to make every game that had gone at least five innings played to the full nine—if this is what I recall correctly, the game will be suspended and finished at noon tomorrow.
Al Yellon - August 4, 2008
Rule 4.10.C
Says it is an official game after 5 innings have been completed….
What has changed recently is the rule about if the visiting team takes the lead in an inning after it is an official game, and the home team does not have a chance to answer in their portion of the inning (Rule 4.12.A.5)
TheRiot Police - August 4, 2008
ESPN
Just stated that if they cannot play tonight, it will be an Astros win.
gocubsgo22 - August 4, 2008
OK...
... I was confused about when a game can be suspended or not. Guess this one can’t be.
Al Yellon - August 4, 2008
I believe what they changed...
was that a game is suspended in these cases only if it is a tie. The rule used to be that the entire game would have to be replayed.
Goat Whisperer - August 4, 2008
Didn't one get suspended in the 8th at PIT a year or two ago with the Cubs winning?
GateCity, VA Cubs Fan - August 4, 2008
May 1, 2007
The game was suspended with a tie score. The Cubs were trailing until D.Ward launched a homer to tie it right before the delay hit. Game was resumed the next day…. this also was the game in which Fonzie had his 1st Cubs HR
Yes he waited until May 1 to hit his first HR…. but he was on the DL for the second half of April.
MillsChC - August 4, 2008
I'm confused too...
I thought the rule was 4 1/2 innings (or 5 if the home team was behind)
I’d love them to play on but is that what they will do?
kiwibob - August 4, 2008
The game
is considered complete after 5 innings played. The game can be suspended if the game is haulted during an inning in which the visiting team has taken the lead or tied the game.

va cubsfan - August 4, 2008
yikes be safe everyone
hope all the wind wasn’t started by the cubs hacking tonight :(
cubswynn - August 4, 2008
rule is game can be called after 5 innings
Or 4.5 if the home team is winning. But I have also seen suspended games where one team was winning after 5 innings. Odd.
gocubsgo22 - August 4, 2008
That only applies if the visitors score a run to take the lead
in the inning that the game was stopped. Since that’s not the case, if the game is called right now, the ‘Stros will get the win.
va cubsfan - August 4, 2008
That can happen
if say the home team was winning 5-2 entering the top of the 6th. The visiting team takes the lead in the top of the 6th. A rain delay prevents the home team from playing the bottom of the 6th. That game is treated as a suspended game if it can’t continue.
Rule 4.12.A.5
Weather, if a regulation game is called while an inning is in progress and before the inning is completed, and the visiting team has scored one or more runs to take the lead, and the home team has not retaken the lead; or
TheRiot Police - August 4, 2008
Prince Fielder
Anyone see him get into it with Parra on the bench tonight? He had to be restrained and got a big push in that knocked Parra over.

Goodie1969 - August 4, 2008
Yeah 'cause
the Cubs really blew up last year after that Z/Barrett scuffell…
Moose
moose97 - August 4, 2008
I think there's a huge difference between that and what happened tonight in the brewers dugout
because for one thing the barrett/z scuffle happened MUCH earlier in the season. For another the brewers are a YOUNG team that hasn’t dealt with much adversity. The Cubs, I don’t need to go into how much adversity they’ve gone through. They’re reminded of it every day. The 2007 and 2008 cubs have shown themselves to be resilient. The 2008 brewers have not.
cubsonWGN4ever - August 4, 2008
the difference is
the brewers can’t get rid of parra or fielder like the cubs could with barrett…...they can’t…..yost has no control over his clubhouse, didn’t he and a player brawl last year?
cubswynn - August 4, 2008
Yeah
It was Johnny Estrada. That clubhouse must be a barrel o’laughs tonight.
Goodie1969 - August 4, 2008

drewishdrewid - August 4, 2008
Do Tornados happen around Chicago often?
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - August 4, 2008
Not really
The Chicago area as a whole gets 1-2 tornadoes a year on average (I think) – not too bad by Midwestern standards. Usually they’re mostly out in the suburbs, it’s extremely rare for a tornado to form near the lake. There’s a meteorological reason for that, but it’s too complicated for me to remember. (Ask Tom Skilling if you’re really curious.)
hip2bsquare - August 4, 2008
Tom Skilling doesn't answer my e-mails anymore
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - August 4, 2008
Thats not acurate
Tornadoes do form in Chicago, and the lake offers zero protection from tornadic development.
Galvan316 - August 4, 2008
I've heard otherwise
from what I would consider to be credible sources. However, I’m not a meteorologist, so I can’t confirm the accuracy of what I’ve heard.
hip2bsquare - August 4, 2008
The Tornado that hit Oak Lawn IL in 1963
Blew right over the Stevenson Expressway and went right into Lake Michigan. And that was until 1990 the most powerful Tornado to ever hit Chicago.
Galvan316 - August 4, 2008
Yours truly lived in Plainfield at that time
and just recently moved to Joliet (right next door). It was a bad time. Everyone who was there then doesn’t like to talk about it, and “SOP” is not to bring it up.
Sirens still get my dander up
lostinthevines - August 4, 2008
I cant say I blame you for being
Jumpy.
The Plainfield Tornado was and still is the most powerful August tornado ever to hit the United States
Galvan316 - August 4, 2008
There's a big black granite monument
on Ft. Beggs drive, just down from Plainfield Central High School (the new one; the old one having been destyroyed in the storm) that just three or four weeks ago had trees fall all around it from a gustnado that hit the exact same area
lostinthevines - August 4, 2008
And the only F5...........
..........in Chicagoland’s history.
tville - August 4, 2008
Since 1855.............
............only 92 “significant” tornadoes have been recorded in the entire metropolitan area of Chicago.
“Significant” means Level 2 or higher on the Fujita scale or a tornado that caused at least 10 injuries or one death.
The Chicago metro area includes McHenry, Lake, Kane, DuPage, Cook, Kendall and Will counties, as well as Lake County, Indiana.
And so, yes, tornadoes are incredibly rare in the City of Chicago.
tville - August 4, 2008
Believe the Oak Lawn............
.............killer twister was in 1967.
tville - August 4, 2008
Yep
I was only 7 at the time but I still remember that night….
LT - August 4, 2008
<---- Meteorologist
Exactly, the lake offers zero protection for Chicago, since virtually all tornadoes would have to move toward the lake. Downwind of the lake may cause some storms to weaken though, due to cooler air over the lake.

BACK FROM THE BLEACHERS
Just returned home from the bleachers.Ms. Fuk U Meter and I went to the bathroom after the fifth. For some reason I decided to take all the stuff with me. Not 5 mins later was is Armageddon outside. We stood by a wall under the bleachers for 1/2 hour, then the rain started getting inside. Then we started hearing reports about tornadoes, then the sirens went off. They went off for about 5 mins, then off for 10. They went on again and we heard the loudest thunder I have ever heard in my life.
The sirens went off again, so we took shelter in the men’s room. There were about 10 women in there at the time. Half hour later, all the restrooms were co-ed. Some teenagers were gun shy with the girls in there. Poor kids. When the rain let up Ms. Fuk U Dometer and I took a rickshaw back home and gave the guy a hearty tip. Good to be home.
Fukudometer - August 4, 2008
Forgot to mention
Rules went out the window…everyone was smoking, especially in the bathroom. Ashes were faling on us from the ramps behind the bleachers. A fire truck went by and everyone cheered. Spoke to a Houston fan and he said: “Sure, we have a hurricane down home, and tornadoes up here. I can’t win.”

PieFan08 - August 4, 2008
I don't think they can change the time of the game
Unless they have 2 games tomorrow (which can’t happen)
berselius - August 4, 2008
Correct.
They can’t change tomorrow’s game time. Even if it stops raining, and even with the new drainage system, there was a TON of water on the field. Probably had 2+ inches of rain within half an hour.
I’m guessing it’ll be called. Radar shows it should be raining at least two more hours.

PieFan08 - August 4, 2008
Our lead would still be 5.0
Brewers would be 5 games back and the Birds 5.5 back…

cowsarecool220 - August 4, 2008
Sure, it'd be great to finish if they could.
But the radar looks like it’ll be raining for at least another hour, maybe 90 minutes, then it’d take 20-30 minutes to get the field in playing shape. By then it’d be well after 11:00 and there’s a day game tomorrow.
And as noted below, you don’t want to get anyone hurt on a wet field.

Could have been called in the 4th. To quote Airplane, “the Cubs picked a bad night swing at everything.”
BeltwayCubsFan - August 4, 2008
My sentiments exactly....
Len abd Bob started talking about the lightning and I was thinking “Why are they tearing through the innings and not slowing everything up seeing as they are behind?”
kiwibob - August 4, 2008
Well....
What sucks is that because ESPN picked this game up, the moved the game time up an hour. If they kept at its original time there is no way they get through 5 innings before the rain.
Oh well…everything happens for the reason. If the field is too crappy to play better not tempt the baseball gods
