i thought his splits were pretty good for 1st/2nd half
wuz hoping he would find something this year…we really don’t have a lefty that can get a good lefty out….cotts seems to do a little better against righties.
of scoring is to give a blown hold or save pitcher a win if his team comes back and scores the next inning. I guess the theory is he didn’t blow it bad enough to keep his team in the game.
But still, this quirk in scoring needs to be changed, IMO. Whoever comes in next and pitches and keeps the lead should be awarded the W. I have always found this a very odd way to get a win—through FAILURE. One of the odd parts of baseball that awards failure.
yeah, it has happened quite a few times this year...
i am just happy we have a team that doesn’t give up when it gets shitty. look at Harden’s first game. that could have been a disaster, and we came back to win
Game cast has a hitzone thing that tells you how a batter performs in certain zones in the strike zone. If you throw the ball right down the middle of the plate to Matsui, he hits .000
they've mentioned that with a few other known hitters as well
vlad guerro hits like .140 when pitched down the middle and i remember the commentators saying that was misleading. nobody in the right mind would wanna pitch anybody down the heart of the plate, it’s just the hitters don’t expect pitchers to throw that bad of a ball.
...so I’m going to go easy on the Howry hate. But something is clearly wrong. It’s a little too deep into the season for him to be this consistently bad.
Well my cpu at work couldn't handle when these threads got busy
First bad game for Harden, he will be fine. Howry is still awful, I called that Lee homer against him. Alfonso Soriano is a STAR, people love to hate him, but he got that contract for a reason. Nice to see Wood back on the mound.
I’m just repeating what he said. He was specifically asked about Howry and that’s when he said that and he just repeated it again at the end of his pc.
He does keep making excuses. “Lee can hit” Ok Lou, that may be true but you should’ve followed that w/ “and apparently Howry can’t pitch.” First pitch HR, ugh.
first!
soriano!

Please don’t tell me it was Howry that gave up the lead. If it was I bet Eyre is screaming Why Me
Jayo525 - August 5, 2008
Yes and yes...
Kinky Reggae - August 5, 2008
Thanks.
Damn, Now I really feel bad for Eyre and am starting to really dislike Howry. I’m taking this much too personally.
Jayo525 - August 5, 2008
Not really
I mean, he didn’t hurt a loved one (physically anyway) but he just is a pile of crap out there. A sure lead blower.
Kinky Reggae - August 5, 2008
course it was
although Harden did kinda disintegrate there…
drewishdrewid - August 5, 2008
isn't he in line for the win now?

Hendry said he's cleared
Sure, why not? Eyre can’t be worse than Howry has been, right?
John Q Freejazz - August 5, 2008
i'm sure he couldn't

Bill Potter - August 5, 2008
Pfeh.
I’d DFA both Eyre and Howry and bring up that kid in Iowa – the closer at Iowa (drawing a blank on his name…)

I’d refuse.
drewishdrewid - August 5, 2008

I don’t think the howry/eyre signings were bad, but I sure wish they were 2 year deals instead of 3!

That's why it's so rare to see 3 year reliever deals
IowaCubs- - August 5, 2008
i know, we migh have had to do it to get them...
2 good years, 1 bad for both of them…if we can get something for eyre, it would be a plus

Eyre wasn't all that good last year, either.
He had his moments. All told, for a team with the Cubs’ resources, they got decent production without crippling themselves financially.

It really is ODD that a quirk
of scoring is to give a blown hold or save pitcher a win if his team comes back and scores the next inning.

MinnesotaFan - August 5, 2008
My vote goes to Soriano.
neverAcquiesce - August 5, 2008

I really believe this... he'll come around
Goat Whisperer - August 5, 2008
I think he will too.
Kornchex - August 5, 2008
To be Fair . . .
Howry has had two solid seasons for the Cubs . . . He just sucks now
TheRiot02 - August 5, 2008
What have you done for me lately?
neverAcquiesce - August 5, 2008
got us a win today
heh
tim815 - August 5, 2008
By proxy.
neverAcquiesce - August 5, 2008
Yeah, I've always liked Bob...
...so I’m going to go easy on the Howry hate. But something is clearly wrong. It’s a little too deep into the season for him to be this consistently bad.
daver - August 5, 2008
he's sucked all year
Emelie - August 5, 2008
Oh a uniform with his ERA on it. Nice.
carmen_fanzone - August 5, 2008

sue369 - August 5, 2008
Marmol ERA at 3.47 now
malicedoom - August 5, 2008
Locating the fastball is the whole key for him and he's been doing it consistently lately
CubsBall2202 - August 5, 2008
Marmol is nasty
it got away from him for what? 3 weeks? We all jumped all over him, hes back to the old Marmol
PieFan08 - August 5, 2008
well
people jumped all over Lou for “overuse”.
drewishdrewid - August 5, 2008
whew.
well, that was a little stressful there for a bit! But a W is a W, no matter how ugly!
Good Job Cubs!
drewishdrewid - August 5, 2008
Love it though...
We are used to losing games like this, not winning them. Love how this team just battles. Seems like they almost flip the switch when they need to.
Fishbone2 - August 5, 2008
Talent will do that....

tim815 - August 5, 2008
Bye, all. Worky worky....
with the happy refrain of “Go Cubs Go” wafting through Wrigleyville….
BigJohnAZ - August 5, 2008
good day for cub hitters
Soriano=3-5, 4 RBI’s
Lee=4-5
DeRo=3-5, 3 Ribeye’s
aznsensation - August 5, 2008
Well my cpu at work couldn't handle when these threads got busy
First bad game for Harden, he will be fine.
Howry is still awful, I called that Lee homer against him.
Alfonso Soriano is a STAR, people love to hate him, but he got that contract for a reason.
Nice to see Wood back on the mound.
nji232 - August 5, 2008
Hmm
interesting..harden actually told Lou he was done..I’m glad he was honest.
Blaze22 - August 5, 2008
but Lou is making
excuses for Howry. Said the bull pen is spent.
sue369 - August 5, 2008
huh?
when did the pen come out? Who pitched after the long delay last night?
drewishdrewid - August 5, 2008
Gauidin did didn't he?
I’m just repeating what he said. He was specifically asked about Howry and that’s when he said that and he just repeated it again at the end of his pc.
sue369 - August 5, 2008
Also....
...that we’ve played so many games in a row, that it’s taxed the bullpen.
carmen_fanzone - August 5, 2008
Apparently we only have
a 2-3 man bullpen
Jayo525 - August 5, 2008
You're right Sue
He does keep making excuses. “Lee can hit” Ok Lou, that may be true but you should’ve followed that w/ “and apparently Howry can’t pitch.” First pitch HR, ugh.
Jayo525 - August 5, 2008
a gutty little
comeback victory. nicely done
brian custer - August 5, 2008
God, I'm almost glad I started working last week...
...cause that means I get to spend every afternoon with you guys!
PurpleLineToWrigley - August 5, 2008
I'm outta here everyone
Good win! Lets do it again tomorrow
Lou In Blue - August 5, 2008
Lou...
“I had some choices (on who pitches to Carlos Lee) and obviously didn’t make the right one.”
Okay, Lou, let’s hope that’s Howry’s last chance at pitching in anything but mop up games.
DFA Howry when Leiber comes off the DL. Please.
carmen_fanzone - August 5, 2008
+1000000000000000000000000
nji232 - August 5, 2008
Or at least keep Howry's outings to the absolute minimum.
Howry should’ve walked Carlos Lee and then Lou could have brought in a lefty to face Blum.
daver - August 5, 2008
My thoughts exactly.
Jayo525 - August 5, 2008
well... gotta give him credit for at least admitting it
Emelie - August 5, 2008
I am going home
to my wife!
Hopefully the Suds and Birds both punt and lose tonight; we’re ever closer to my 8 game up by mid august! :D
drewishdrewid - August 5, 2008
Peace out!
daver - August 5, 2008
later drew...
