What, you thought that was some kind of sex reference? On this site?
Sixty-nine is, of course, the number of wins the Cubs have after today's outstanding 11-4 Cubs win over the Astros, the last of twenty games in twenty consecutive days following the All-Star break, during which the Cubs went 12-8 and increased their lead in the NL Central by half a game over the Brewers. If you check the "Best Starts Since 1900" box I've been keeping on the right sidebar for a couple of months, you'll see that only twelve Cub teams in the last 108 years have played 115 games with a better record than this year's 69-46 version.
That includes six pennant winners and the ill-fated 1969 team, which had just about reached its highest point right at about this time of the season, the first week of August. The 1908 team and the 1984 team didn't get hot till after the 115th game -- many of you probably remember the four-game sweep of the Mets at Wrigley Field in mid-August 1984, during which Keith Moreland and Ed Lynch got into a bench-clearing brawl after Lynch, then a Mets pitcher, brushed Moreland back.
The 2008 Cubs are creating their own history, of course, and today they just kept on rolling. That sounds clichéd, but it really isn't -- every day, there's a new way of winning, and new heroes, proving today once again that this is a complete team, not just one or two superstars carrying a club (although Alfonso Soriano can certainly do that, and has been leading the charge since he returned from the DL).
Today, after Jason Marquis likely got all the Marquis-haters here riled up after he allowed the Astros four runs after two were out and no one on in the third, capped by a Carlos Lee three-run jack (man, does that guy love hitting in Wrigley or what). The key at-bat in that inning was Hunter Pence drawing a walk after Marquis had him down 0-2. The Lee HR put the Astros up 4-1, and the Cubs looked a bit flat in the first two innings except for the back-to-back doubles by Jim Edmonds and Mark DeRosa that had given the Cubs a brief 1-0 lead.
They followed that top of the third with perhaps their best inning of the year -- scoring eight runs after two were out; with those two out and Ryan Theriot on with a single, Aramis Ramirez and Edmonds drew walks. Whoever posted in the pregame thread that if the Cubs waited Brandon Backe out, that would be the key to winning, had it exactly right. After those two walks, DeRo hit his fourth career grand slam, giving him five RBI for the day and 63 for the season, leaving him only eleven short of his career high set in 2006 with the Rangers. After another double by Kosuke Fukudome, the Astros intentionally walked Geovany Soto, only to have Marquis hit yet another double, driving in a run, and Soriano capped it off with his 21st homer.
Since returning from the DL, Soriano is hitting .348/.375/.697 with 6 HR and 14 RBI, and the Cubs have gone 11-4 in the 15 games.
Carrying a team? I'd say so. But again, Soriano's blow today only put the game away; the Cubs added two more in the next inning by drawing a couple more walks. They had six in all off Backe, who was clearly asked to take one for the team today; he allowed eleven earned runs and threw 99 pitches to get ten outs and his ERA went from 4.72 to 5.35.
Meanwhile, after allowing the Lee HR, Marquis settled down and allowed only two hits; the bases got loaded in the fourth on a strange ground ball where the Cubs IF didn't quite seem to know where to throw the ball -- there were two out and it seemed as if DeRosa forgot that; he could have just thrown to first but tried for a force play that failed. It didn't matter as Hunter Pence flied to center to end the inning. After that Marquis retired seven of the next eight hitters and might have had enough to finish the seventh inning had Aramis Ramirez not pulled Derrek Lee off first base on a ground ball by probably the slowest player on the field, Humberto Quintero. When Marquis left in favor of Sean Marshall he got probably the warmest applause he's had in his year and two-thirds as a Cub.
Say what you want about Marquis -- he does exactly what he's asked to do, eat up innings and keep his team in the game. He has now thrown at least six innings in nine of his last ten starts, and that probably makes him the best fifth starter in the league. That's a bold statement and I don't have time to make statistical comparisons with other NL fifth starters, so if anyone here wants to do that, go right ahead.
Today, BCB reader Rudey was the one who emailed me first and bought my extra tickets. Nice to meet you and hope you enjoyed the game.
The Brewers beat the Reds this afternoon so the Cubs' lead in the Central stays at five games; the Cardinals will play the Dodgers tonight and tomorrow afternoon and after last night's rain-delayed, extra-inning game in St. Louis, the best thing we can hope for is two more games just like that one, so that the Cardinals arrive in Chicago for Friday's game exhausted, while the Cubs enjoy their well-earned off day tomorrow.
You enjoy it too. Onward in this remarkable, wonderful season.

That's what Madonna said
it turned out to be a lie.
BrewCrew'sPrinceofDarkness - August 6, 2008
People: What happened to Madonna's face?
Answer: She’s amazed by the Cubsmagical season
cubbie-swagger - August 7, 2008
the more i think about it...
Marquis, if you evaluate him as a fifth starter, is just fine in the rotation. And looking at the rotation, 1-5, it has to be the best in the league.
Bill Potter - August 6, 2008
I agree .. .
he has his moments where he just drives us nuts but he has pitched ok & kept us in most games. Today he was one bad pitch away from another QS. Also, Jedmonds misplayed that ball in that inning too which contributed. Can’t have defensive lapses when Marquis is on the mound.
Basman - August 6, 2008
Jedmonds took a lot of crap for that in the game thread
and I would therefore like to point out that even if he had his sunglasses on and/or didn’t lose it in the sun, it was still a very tough play. Yes, Jim Edmonds probably should have caught it, but a lot of CFs probably wouldn’t have.
JohnM - August 6, 2008
Soriano also misplayed a ball today.
After the HR, he’s forgiven.
Al Yellon - August 6, 2008
After the way this team is playing
everyone is forgiven for their past miscues.
Well, everyone except the Bob, who at this point in the season is lucky to still be a Cub. I don’t knock players, but Howry is the only player on this team I do not have confidence in when in the game.
That’s my opinion and I hope Howry can change it soon.
flachimesa - August 6, 2008
that's pretty much
our Soriano koan, isn’t it?
Emelie - August 7, 2008
Pie catches that ball easily...
Edmonds has clearly lost a few steps. I just hope it doesn’t hurt the team down the road.
Bump Bailey - August 6, 2008
First !! - damn not !!
Heh heh … he said 69
Basman - August 6, 2008
69, dude!
daver - August 7, 2008
Jason Marquis continues to do the job...
Hard to quibble with his performance level in 2008. He has taken the ball every 5th day and generally speaking has kept his team in ballgames and logged innings.
Mark DeRosa shows once again why he is the most underrated ballplayer on the Cubs. All he does is selflessly produce and serve whatever role is asked of him.
On a different note, I wonder if Jon Lieber is going to return from the DL or be banished there all season with his phantom injury. If he does come back, maybe the Cubs DFA Bob Howry.
MDBNIU - August 6, 2008
I don't think Howry will be DFA
when/if Lieber comes back. It just seems like they have much different roles, so only if Lou finds someone to fill Howry’s role (it’s not the long-man role), then maybe.
Bill Potter - August 6, 2008
Marquis serves a purpose on this team
He won’t be on the playoff roster, so no need to worry about using him too much in the regular season. He eats up innings and keeps the team in the game, even though it is frustrating and annoying at times.
nji232 - August 6, 2008
Glad to see a few more agree
He’s the 5th starter. Rarely does he ever get rocked and knocked out early. He’s good for 5 to 7 innings, 4 to 6 runs plus he never gets hurt. A lot of teams will take that from the bottom of the rotation.
I know a lot of people wonder about Hendry trying to trade him. I’m not so sure he really tried that much. Of course he listened but I don’t think he actively went out looking to move him.
rlpete - August 6, 2008
Marquis is good at what he is
which is an innings-chewing #5 who throws mostly quality starts. He will never be Cy Young and that’s fine. With a staff this loaded, I think he just suffers by comparison sometimes. I have no problem with him as long as we give him run support. Doesn’t need to be as many runs as we gave him today every time, but if it was, that wouldn’t hurt my feelings either.
Goodie1969 - August 6, 2008
amen
i’ve been preaching this message for the last two months now…...leave marquis alone, he is an above average 5th starter
and lets not forget, the guy can pinch run when needed and swings a 2008 andruw jones type bat….don’t overlook that part of his “game”
cubswynn - August 6, 2008
As we've gone over before....
....Lou likes Howry because he throws strikes and competes. If possible, Leiber will be kept on “long rehab” until Sept. 1st if there is no room on the roster.
I believe Lou believes that Howry can work through his issues. Although a few more bad outings, and that might change. So far, Howry’s issues have not significanly cost the Cubs…but that could change…
NotSure - August 6, 2008
Throwing strikes and competing.
Wonderful. He keeps blowing games and making blowouts close. I wouldn’t use him unless the Cubs are down by 8 runs or more.
Al Yellon - August 7, 2008
Howry Will Be Important
I haven’t been happy with his performance this season. The Cubs should make the playoffs without his playing a major role. In the playoffs, though, the Cubs are going to need as many dependable arms as possible. I would feel better about the Cubs’ chances in postseason, if Howry was pitching better. He could still turn things around. As crazy as postseason baseball is, he could prove to the Cubs’ bullpen hero.
memphiscub - August 7, 2008
Lieber must be in Lou's doghouse.
Obviously.
Hammer - August 6, 2008
Hmmmm....
NotSure - August 6, 2008
Just a couple of things I noticed in the recap Al..
Carlos Lee hit a 3 run homer, Berkman and an RBI single right before Lee came up. And Derrek Lee was the one that threw to 2nd on that play that loaded the bases in the 4th, not DeRo. No big deal just thought I’d throw those out there.
More importantly 69 wins, 5 games up, and best record in the NL. Feeling good heading into a much deserved day off
mkcubs21 - August 6, 2008
You're right about the Lee HR.
I’ll fix that. Thanks.
Al Yellon - August 6, 2008
I believe he is also right
about the throw to 2nd by Lee (not DeRo), who was moving to his right on the play, making the throw to second (where Theriot was not covering) the easier play.
Goodie1969 - August 6, 2008
Yeah
Theriot snoozed on covering the bag. Luckily, it didn’t hurt them.
salparadise23 - August 6, 2008
It was confusing to the players...
... and to us too. I couldn’t quite tell who was covering.
Al Yellon - August 6, 2008
Anyone who's ever read Al
wouldn’t think 69 was a sex reference at all, unless they were going to say “You’re all Bill Hands tonight” or “I’m getting pretty Randy, Hundley.”
Sometimes I’m glad I was too young to remember the summer of ‘69. Except the Bryan Adams song. I remember that.
Josh Timmers - August 6, 2008

Sorry to hear that.
It’ll be a helluva game. SWL, you good to sing?

Al Yellon - August 7, 2008
Now, will this game be at
the West Side Grounds or Wrigley? And will the Cubs have some Orphans throwbacks on?
Bill Potter - August 6, 2008
It's in Wrigley...
and yes! Cubs will don Orphans unis for the game!
santoswoodenlegs - August 6, 2008
outstanding.
can’t wait to see Crazy Schmit pitch. Hopefully the Cubs will get into that bullpen of Sport McAllister and Highball Wilson.
Bill Potter - August 6, 2008
McAllister probably won't pitch out of the bullpen tomorrow...
he’s playing LF and only pitches when their up by more than 3 runs.
Wilson is a rookie, and Quinn most likely won’t throw him in a game unless it’s just to get 1 out.
santoswoodenlegs - August 6, 2008
good points.
i could see Kid Carsey making an appearance, but if i were the Cubs, I’d be studying reports on Harry Colliflower. Seems like they can take some pitches off him, since he has 41 walks and 8 strikeouts on the year.
Bill Potter - August 6, 2008
will we get a play-by-play?
looking to see how kerosene does as a starter

I recorded the game
today because I had to go shopping so I will watch it later. Glad to see Marquis came through to get the win today. Glad I wasn’t in the first pitch thread as I hear it was pretty ugly in there. DeRo was the hero today. Love how they share the hitting on this team. It’s great to be a Cub’s fan.
I think I will enjoy the day off tomorrow. Get ready to watch some Bear’s football tomorrow night.
sue369 - August 6, 2008
It wasn't too bad Sue..
Mainly a lot of Marquis hate is all. Really didn’t see any trolls around. That must have been an important shopping trip to miss a Cubs game..:)

Thx Al again

watching baseball tonight
and according to Eric Young, if DeRosa had been in the dugout during his grand slam, DeRo would have said, “Shucky-ducky, quack quack.”
I have no idea what that means.

if you have this game recorded
rewind it back to the sori homerun….it was priceless
bb says as backe is throwing the pitch – “and this is why you don’t send geovany soto home, on what could have been a close play”
almost immediately after bb stops talking sori hits it out, puts his head down and starts clapping, while backe throws his hands up in disgust
it was a priceless moment, i encourage all to watch it if you can
cubswynn - August 6, 2008
Look forward to seeing
that now. Probably will watch it tomorrow.
sue369 - August 6, 2008
Remember in the Houston series in the Juice Box recently
Backe was called out on strikes, I think, and he pitched (pardon the pun) a fit with the home plate umpire as he walked back to the dugout, and I think BB noted that was not likely going to result in Backe getting benefit of any close calls the rest of the game. Makes me think the guy (Backe) is a bit of a hot head when things don’t go his way.
DWChaney - August 7, 2008
Oh, that's right.
He was literally “hopping mad” after a called third strike. Yup, payback’s a bitch.
daver - August 7, 2008
I'm sorry, but
it seems to me that Marq is getting a little too much praise here. Yes, he did eat up innings (his primary job), but everyone keeps crediting him with keeping us in the game. If he’s up by one, gives up 4 runs and then his team scores 11, I’m pretty sure that’s the offense keeping the team in the game, not Marquis. I’m not contradicting the opinion that he’s still pretty good for a #5 guy, which I agree with. Just I think he’s getting more credit than he deserves.
rea5661 - August 6, 2008
Um, he didn't allow any
more runs so he did pitch well enough to stop them from scoring any more after that one inning. So like it or not you have to credit him with keeping them from scoring more runs. He did his job and got the win.
sue369 - August 6, 2008
he's a #5
they are not expected to go out and get 15 wins.
got the W today and nobody on the team would have won his last game…they scored 0 runs.
if he gets through 6/7 innings he has done his job,,regardless of how many runs he gives up.
cozmotaylor123 - August 6, 2008
He also had behind him
the shakiest defense the Cubs have played since before the ASB. Sori misjudged one, Dome almost did, Edmonds lost a ball in the sun, DLee made an ill-advised throw to 2B (Marquis covered first in plenty of time), Rami committed an error, DeRo and Cedeno were slow on a DP ball, etc.
Jason needs pristine defense behind him, and he didn’t get it today, but - like Al said - he kept battling and kept the team in the game for 6-1/3 innings.
He also drove in one run.
DeRoMyHero - August 6, 2008
our defense did struggle today..
luckily the offense decided to put up an 11 spot to help matters out.
mkcubs21 - August 6, 2008
Any word on Theriot?
I’m assuming he’s fine, but I’d feel better with confirmation
chitownhawkeye - August 6, 2008

I imagine he’ll be pretty sore tomorrow. Good thing it’s an off day—even if he has to miss a couple games, there is a competent backup in Cedeno.
Al Yellon - August 6, 2008
Looks like
he’ll be fine. Contusion? That’s just a fancy word for “boo boo”.
chitownhawkeye - August 6, 2008

Good Two Days
I hate to get off track, but the last two days have been great. A new Cub fan came into this world yesterday. Caroline Addison, yes it is named after the street and not Grays, came into Cub world around 11:25 a.m. I joked with my wife that I would like for her to have our daughter before the game yesterday. We don’t have a Cub outfit for her to come home in, but by the time Oct. rolls around – she will.
The nurses and Dr.’s don’t understand why the Cubs game was on the last two days, but we have told them we are both Cubs fan. She is 2-0. I like the record.
Great win today and a day off tomorrow is even better. A 12-8 record is a good way to start the 2nd half of the season after the way we played in Houston.

On to much happier things…
And Al, you scamp! Getting us all titillated like that and then come back at us with statistics of all things. But hell yeah! Go Cubs!
Emelie - August 6, 2008
for a flight?
what airline be that ?
ballstitch - August 6, 2008
it wasn't the flight it was the frickin' hotel business center
Emelie - August 6, 2008
aha
why is it that cheap O hotels are free internet and more expensive places charge for the same thing?
ballstitch - August 6, 2008
uh
how did I do that? more beer!
ballstitch - August 6, 2008
ARRR it's the grey bar pirate, matey!
Emelie - August 6, 2008
actually I'm going to complain at check out and have them remove the charge
hotels are wimps like that, thank goodness
Emelie - August 6, 2008
OK... so upset I typo'ed the hell out of that

...nothing like it.
NotSure - August 6, 2008

Unfortunately, I haven’t seen one small enough to fit in my laptop bag.
flachimesa - August 6, 2008
Agreed...
The only one’s that are small enough are the thermals…ugh…

PurpleLineToWrigley - August 6, 2008
yep
and 3-1 dodgers makes watching the MLB.TV feed of the cardinal game even more enjoyable.
ballstitch - August 6, 2008
agreed
it’s nice to have the “W” flag up when everyone else is playing.
it will be like that on Friday, too … Cubs vs. Cardinals is the only afternoon game that day.
Vermont Cubs Fan - August 6, 2008
well whatever they put in the water in StL
is working, now its 3-3
ballstitch - August 6, 2008
Brian Giles has been claimed off waivers.
Padres have 48 hours to either work out a trade with the claiming team, let him go or pull him off waivers. Cubs reportedly were offered Giles before the trading deadline…
cwyers - August 6, 2008
well..
< sarcasm >
we could give him Howry’s spot in the bullpen
< /sarcasm >
seriously though… even with good OBA, where would he fit on the team
ballstitch - August 6, 2008
Where would Raul Ibanez have fit?
cwyers - August 6, 2008
good point
i do not have the wisdom you seek. I am simply too baffled by the Cards’s success as I watch them on my computer to form a coherent chain of thought they simply amaze me with their ability to compete day in day out. it stuns me and I am numb from it.
ballstitch - August 6, 2008
I'm not sure I understand the Cubs' desire for Yet Another Lefty either.
But they seem to want it.
cwyers - August 6, 2008
Replace DWard?
Just throwing it out there…
carmen_fanzone - August 6, 2008
Well...
... I looked up Giles’ numbers. Not as bad as I thought. Few HR, but 26 doubles and a good OBA. He just might be a better bench option than Ward. Can’t play 1B, though.
Al Yellon - August 6, 2008
Is there a reason Giles can't play 1B, other than the fact that he hasn't before?
cwyers - August 6, 2008
I guess not.
But, I don’t know that I want a guy like that as the primary backup 1B, when he’s learning it on the fly.
Al Yellon - August 6, 2008
Blanco and Soto both have experience playing first base.
For one game – or even just a few innings late – I’m sure we’d be fine. With a long-term injury, you’d think Hoffpauir would be called up.
cwyers - August 6, 2008
All of this is true.
DeRosa also has experience at 1B. Hoffpauir will almost certainly be recalled on September 1.
So maybe this isn’t such a bad idea. Giles isn’t what he once was, but he’s not a bad player.
Al Yellon - August 6, 2008
and i think edmonds has proved this year..
that you don’t have to be what you once were to be a valuable for this ball club.
mkcubs21 - August 6, 2008
Definately help our defensive flexibility on Dome's days off..
...and DeRo could stay in the infield the rest of the year.
carmen_fanzone - August 6, 2008
Both Dome and Giles are LHBs
and most of Dome’s days off come against LHPs.
DeRoMyHero - August 6, 2008
Giles splits look pretty good against LHP's...
....and I’d rather have him out there defensively on Dome’s days off than DeRo, which was my point.
carmen_fanzone - August 7, 2008
lake michigan water good for
rejuvenating veteran lefty hitting outfielders
tim815 - August 6, 2008
to agree with you cwyers..
we’re only a few weeks away from sept call ups and we’re all assuming that Hoff gets called up anyway. then we’ll have our for sure back up 1st baseman
mkcubs21 - August 6, 2008
DeRo played 1B for 9 games last year, too.
carmen_fanzone - August 6, 2008
Giles for Eyre?
hey it could happen
Chanman25 - August 6, 2008
Doubtful.
Reported the Red Sox and Phillies are interested in Eyre.
cwyers - August 6, 2008
He is making $10m a year.....seems pricey
..for a 5th outfielder
JB 23 - August 6, 2008
I'm guessing whatever deal is made..
might have the Padres picking up some of that 10 million
mkcubs21 - August 6, 2008
It's about 1/4 of $10 m...
... that’s what’s left in the season.
Al Yellon - August 6, 2008
good point didn't even consider that..
is he a free agent at the end of the season?
mkcubs21 - August 6, 2008
Team option.
$9 million or a $3 million buyout.
He’s also a spectacular defensive outfielder in right, in stark contrast to Ward.
cwyers - August 6, 2008
i wouldn't mind him..
like carmen said below i’d like him off the bench in sept. just don’t want to give up a ton to get him
mkcubs21 - August 6, 2008
Would Howry be too much? :)
carmen_fanzone - August 6, 2008
if only it were that easy
mkcubs21 - August 6, 2008
I'd like him off the bench in September...
carmen_fanzone - August 6, 2008

Nobody knows.
Which is why we’re rampantly speculating about the possibility that it’s the Cubs.

Woo hoo!
Rampant speculation! My favorite kind.
chitownhawkeye - August 6, 2008
Just guessin'...
Probably an NL West team. They have a close race there (minus the Dads and Giants), and the Snakes are missing Byrnes. It makes sense that someone (the Rockies?) might try to block the Sankes from getting him…
DeRoMyHero - August 6, 2008
I don't know

Man, whatever happened to Brian Giles
His first 2-3 years with the Bucs, he was a stud, and a Cub killer. Then, he got traded to the Pads and just sorta fell off into “average”ness.
DWChaney - August 7, 2008
PETCO park kills careers...
Here are Giles’s home/road splits for the past three years:
Home: .257/.369/.377 (.746 OPS)
Road: .298/.404/.481 (.885 OPS)
That’s a 140 point difference. At home, his stats look well below average for a corner OF. On the road, he’s an upper-tier hitter again.

CaliCub - August 6, 2008
Seems to me the question is...
Are we better positioned to win more games with Marquis in the rotation and Marshall in the pen? I can certainly see the logic in this, we have tons of firepower, we need another lefty gun in the pen, and, above all, it’s working. Marshall still inspires more confidence as a starter than Marquis (IMO), but clearly Lou and crew are making a different bet. And they’re a little better at managing a baseball team than I am :)
So from here on out no more complaining from me.

Carlos Lee's HR
Al, how was the throw back on to the field?
I had dinner at my parents’ house tonight, where I learned that my brother in law was the one that threw the ball back.

Shanghai Badger - August 6, 2008

No more updates!

Vermont Cubs Fan - August 6, 2008
Brett Favre is going to get him comeuppance with the New York Jets
I’m a diehard Bears fan and season ticket holder at Soldier Field. But I have always had great admiration for Brett Favre and what he meant to Green Bay and the NFL in general. That said his handling of retirement matters the past two years has been ghastly. Last year he held the Packers hostage to the last possible moment with his decision to come back. Now he retires only to change his mind and expect the Packers to halt all plans and insert him immediately back into the picture?!? Either that or give him his outright release so he can turn around and sign with Green Bay’s top competitor in the Minnesota Vikings? That’s definition of a selfish arrogant ass. The Jets are awful and have one of the sorriest offensive line situations in football. His sterling record of health is going to come to an abrupt end very soon. And if people thought he chucked the ball up for grabs in Green Bay the past few seasons, then just wait until you see what will have to be his act with the Jets given their woeful offensive weapons.
MDBNIU - August 6, 2008
He told the Packers
that he wanted to go to a divisional rival, and they told him it would not happen. The only place they were going to trade him was somewhere outside the division.

Favre & New York
Uh, Hattiesburg, MS, and Green Bay, WI, aren’t the media markets New York is. How is this southern Mississippi man going to deal with big, big, big city life? Jackson, MS, is huge to Favre. The New York media won’t be kind to Favre after the first bad game he plays.
The Saints already have Drew Brees. For good reason, they had no interest in Favre. I wish Favre had stayed retired. If the Saints didn’t have Brees, it would have been nice for Favre to have played one season with his home area Saints. Also, the Packers might perceive the Saints as a threat in the NFC. There were simply too many reasons for Favre not to go to New Orleans.

I am a die hard Packer fan...

At this point I will post my take
I took in the Houston series as my first Cubs experience. I can only at this point breathe a sigh and take it all in. Monday was my first ever Cubs game and it was very much an experience. I have been a cubs fan ever since I knew what baseball was it has been 25 years at least that I have been tuned in. This is my first trip to Chicago and I have not been disappointed. The people, the games, the food and the experience have been truly unforgettable thus far. I really do not know why I write to tell you all this. But, I assume that at least some of the people that read this live in Chicago, I know Al does. You are lucky people. Tomorrow morning I take my tour of Wrigley and it should be a good amount of fun. My trip thus far has just been amazing and actually seeing games in actual Wrigley vision has been surreal. Cheers.
jajonez77 - August 6, 2008
Yep, seen a lot of baseball in a lot of places, and Wrigley is the best...
...although I haven’t made it to Fenway or Yankee Stadium, but the “ballpark in a neighborhood” feel can’t be duplicated.
NotSure - August 7, 2008
Agreed, though
I wish I’d been able to make it to Yankee Stadium before it goes away.

Wrigley, Fenway, Telephone Park (SF), Camden Yards, CoPa
Them’s my five favorite places to watch a game, when I’ve been inclined to do so.

Ticket question - would appreciate your input
BCBers—
I have a question for those of you that are regular Wrigley visitors. My father and I don’t make it to Wrigley much, since we are in Minnesota and Kansas. We have found two dates in September we want to come to Wrigley, but the available tickets are standing room only. Has anyone purchased tickets such as these before? What can you tell me about SRO tickets? Does this mean you are admitted to the park but must walk the concourse the entire game? What do you think about this way of watching the game?
Appreciate your thoughts.
Dan
dtpollitt - August 7, 2008
SRO
Means that you get to stand in a section at the back of the lower concourse to watch the game. You can’t see much – the beer lines can get in your way, and if the fans stand up, they’ll be in your way.
I bought SRO tickets once, in 1998. My friend and I walked down the RF line and took seats near the corner waiting to get kicked out by the ticket holders—they never showed. So, you can try that and hope you luck out.
If you get to see a clincher, it might be worth it…
Shanghai Badger - August 7, 2008
SRO
I have been to probably 5 games where I had SRO and I really don’t mind. As Shanghai said you can usually find seats where people don’t show up and sort of sneak into them. My only complaint is you can’t see fly balls which drives me nuts, but a lot of seats underneath that is the case.
Overall it is better than nothing.
slocs55 - August 7, 2008
Okay, this helps.
So SRO tickets don’t simply mean you can “walk the concourse” the whole time, there is actually a designated area at which you must stand?
Dan
dtpollitt - August 7, 2008
Yep
You certainly can walk the concourse if you choose, but if you’re going to stand still, it has to be in the designated areas.
Shanghai Badger - August 7, 2008
You still around Badger?
What’s the deal for bleachers? General admission, first come first served, sit wherever you want? How early do you have to get into the game for them?
dtpollitt - August 7, 2008
Bleachers are general admission -- 1st come, 1st serve
Al can answer better, but I’d say be there 1/2 hour before the gates open
Shanghai Badger - August 7, 2008
Hunter Pence at bat
He didn’t have Pence down 0-2. In fact, he was in a 3-0 hole, then came back to 3-2..THEN walked him. FYI
jimvanders - August 7, 2008
and oh yea...
it was Dee Lee making the force attempt at second in the 4th. Not DeRosa, and he knew there were two outs..it was just his momemtum carrying him big time away from first and toward second. Theriot wasn’t expecting the throw to second so he wasn’t at the bag yet.

You're asking the wrong question
Say what you want about Marquis—he does exactly what he’s asked to do, eat up innings and keep his team in the game. He has now thrown at least six innings in nine of his last ten starts, and that probably makes him the best fifth starter in the league. That’s a bold statement and I don’t have time to make statistical comparisons with other NL fifth starters, so if anyone here wants to do that, go right ahead. The fundamental problem with this analysis, as usual, is that if you’re asking the wrong question, the answer doesn’t matter.
The question is not “Is Marquis a good 5th starter?”
The question should be “Is Marquis providing fair value for the amount invested?”
I suppose the writer on BCB is probably a bad fantasy baseball player too. Examples of this type of faulty logic are like bullets riddled throughout the body of a typical fantasy baseball player’s season.
Jason Marquis was signed for $6.4 million/yr, which is a hefty sum. That is not 5th starter money. Your typical 5th starter is either on a rookie contract, or something in the $1-2 mil/yr range.
The Cubs are paying Marquis to perform like a #3 pitcher, not a #5. So he may be the best #5 in the NL, but that information is useless to anyone trying to assess his value.
If you want to determine whether or not Marquis is helping the Cubs win, you have to look at impact per dollar spent. The best way I know to do this is Pitcher VORP/$. In that regard, I suspect that Marquis is among the worst in the NL, though I don’t have that info in front of me.
Listen, you can wax poetical all day long about Marquis’ value, but when you get down to it, he’s consuming resources (in the form of dollars spent) that could have been used on someone else. So if we want to know whether or not Marquis is having a “good season,” you have to consider his salary as well as his performance and role on the team.
