"I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson. He told me to get back behind the batter, that the only thing I knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit." -- Tim McCarver
mlb should provide a provision that if both teams do not like the ump behind home plate...that they can switch him out with another ump from either first or third
I'm so conflicted about who I want to make the playoffs.
On one hand, I loathe the Mets, a lot. On the other, I really enjoy the little brother complex the Brewers have, and enjoy beating up on them. I’m just afraid of the Phillies, that’s all I know.
Besides, knowing they won’t resign him, it makes all the sense in the world to go right ahead and ruin his arm. It won’t affect them in a month. Or less.
that I am stressing too much about these games through the end of the season. I said that may be true but, i would like to go into the post season kickin ass and takin names. Keep it short and easy on the starters, but I am feeling the need to keep the momentum going too.
In Game 5 of the NLCS, 2 runs. 4 walks were bad, I agree. But with the way Beckett was pitching, the Cubs didn’t stand a chance anyways.
I’ll take my chances with him pitching. Yes, his best start was last year’s, but his postseason starts, outside of Game 1 of the 2003 NLCS, haven’t been awful. Not exactly what you’d want, but not awful.
Bringing in Alpo to face Lenny Harris would have probably resulted in the same thing – a hit to give the Marlins the win. That’s not to say Guthrie didn’t suck; both did, so IMO the Cubs were doomed once the Marlins went ahead early in Game 1.
4 starts. Cubs lost 4 of them. ERA 4.37. So not horrible, but not outstanding either, and at least in this small sample size, not as good as his regular season stats.
And while I’d expect more of him, he’s been fine in the playoffs. Per the run support, he’s kept the team in the game, which is part of what you ask from your starter.
so I might be wrong but how much of the struggles by like shark the last few games do you think could be the call behind the plate? I just wonder if Soto being out there would make a difference, and it’s not just because I adore geo…
You fill the bases and now you Definitely have a chance to allow the Mets to get 1 run. Before, an unintentional walk wouldn’t have hurt and you still have the opportunity to get that guy out.
…but guys like Cedeno, Shark, Cotts, Hart, Micah, and maybe Hill are gonna all be on the playoff roster. I don’t see anyone besides Hill that’s a big question mark. This is the “best” of the guys that are gonna be on the bench.
On the bench. Soto will be behind the plate, that will prob go a long way to helping Shark at least (if the tipping pitches thing is true). Cedeno isn’t exactly our go to guy. Hoff’s been okay, did he do something awful lately that I missed? Cotts and Hart are sort of meh. But yeah…this just isn’t getting me worked up.
I realize he’s playing more now that we’re in…but it sure seems like he started to get some more PT before that. Maybe Lou hasn’t been all that satisfied with Theriot down the stretch. I do wish Ronny would take advantage though.
Guy has a chip on his shoulder when it comes to the Cubs. Maybe because his brother plays for Houston and he’s trying to “pay back” the Cubs for the games up at Miller Park.
First?
Awesome!

Only if he plans on throwing strikes
nji232 - September 24, 2008
I'd rather give up a hit
than walk in a run. Those pitches weren’t close
chitownhawkeye - September 24, 2008

that’s aggravating to watch an IBB to load ’em then watch them walk in a run. I hate that decision.

TheTruth11 - September 24, 2008
Not feeling real good about the guys we need to feel good about...
…Zambrano two horrible games, and now the Shark…not to be Debbie Downer, but seriously, the f-ing playoffs begin in a week. A WEEK!!
dtpollitt - September 24, 2008
For God's sake... relax. That's TWO guys. And you can count on Z.
TheTruth11 - September 24, 2008
You mean our ace, right?
The #1 pitcher, the leader of the staff?
I’m just playing devil’s advocate here, but seriously, he’s blown the last two starts.
dtpollitt - September 24, 2008
He's been fine in the playoffs
Here are his playoff numbers – link
I know his last two starts haven’t been pretty, but he was 1 or 2 pitches from getting out things unscathed tonight.
Bill Potter - September 24, 2008
OOOH! Stats!
I love you, Trey. Another stats fan.
dtpollitt - September 24, 2008
They help me settle down sometimes. Like a fine whiskey.
I just think when you blend stats and scouting, things work out pretty well.
Bill Potter - September 24, 2008
Those numbers are awful
Only good start was last year
Shanghai Badger - September 24, 2008
They are not awful.
He’s had 1 bad start – Game 1 of the NLCS, in a game the Cubs were poised to win until Mark Guthrie struck.
Bill Potter - September 24, 2008
What?
Game 2 NLDS 11 hits in 5 2/3
Game 3 NLCS 5 hits, 5 BB in 5 IP
Shanghai Badger - September 24, 2008
Badger, I've never seen this statistical side of you...
dtpollitt - September 24, 2008
Do you like it?
/blushes
Shanghai Badger - September 24, 2008
its kinda hawt
halfblindcubbiegirl - September 24, 2008
awright!
Shanghai Badger - September 24, 2008
But...
In Game 2, 3 runs, 0 BB, 4 K. Not bad.
Bill Potter - September 24, 2008
Thinking Back...
Bringing in Alpo to face Lenny Harris would have probably resulted in the same thing – a hit to give the Marlins the win. That’s not to say Guthrie didn’t suck; both did, so IMO the Cubs were doomed once the Marlins went ahead early in Game 1.
CaliCub - September 24, 2008
Fine?
4 starts. Cubs lost 4 of them. ERA 4.37. So not horrible, but not outstanding either, and at least in this small sample size, not as good as his regular season stats.
ChipSet - September 24, 2008
Not as good.
But the Cubs are also averaging 2.84 runs in this small sample size, and had the offense performed better, a couple of those could have been wins.
Bill Potter - September 24, 2008
And if the dog hadn't stopped to . . .
W’s and L’s and ERA don’t tell the story. Look at that WHIP!
Shanghai Badger - September 24, 2008
Yeah, a WHIP of 1.5 isn't good.
And while I’d expect more of him, he’s been fine in the playoffs. Per the run support, he’s kept the team in the game, which is part of what you ask from your starter.
Bill Potter - September 24, 2008
Debbie: I don't like making young pitchers give IBB...destroys their concentration.
Besides, the first pitch of an IBB for Shark is many times wild.
zevkalman - September 24, 2008
Can't say anyone in the NL has a lot to feel good about....
kcjones - September 24, 2008
except
you know. the first place Cubs. Dominating offense. Run differential. Whatever.
drewishdrewid - September 24, 2008
The proof will be in the pudding SOON....very soon my friend...
kcjones - September 24, 2008
Reyes will put the ball in play...
….grounder…..and a close play
Hammer - September 24, 2008
Lou does not look happy in that dugout shot.
And Sutcliffe says he can predict every pitch Shark has been throwing by where KHill is sitting.
zevkalman - September 24, 2008
I'm missed some games because of work/moving
so I might be wrong but how much of the struggles by like shark the last few games do you think could be the call behind the plate? I just wonder if Soto being out there would make a difference, and it’s not just because I adore geo…
slcathena - September 24, 2008
It's a valid point.
Certain pitchers work better with certain catchers. And Geo’s pattern of calling pitches, if he has one, could vary from those of Blanco and Hill.
Bill Potter - September 24, 2008
I agree
Soto is terrific at handling that pitching staff. Hill? I dunno.
hip2bsquare - September 24, 2008
Exactly,
Even some of the vets have commented on Soto’s presence.
And let’s be honest, until after the IBB Shark wasn’t pitching POORLY. That’s a pressure situation, without your ace behind the plate.
slcathena - September 24, 2008
But didn't the Cubs have a great record last year
in games that Hill caught?
ChipSet - September 24, 2008

graceunderpressure - September 24, 2008

Hammer - September 24, 2008
Chavez has a .308 OBP
and yet they put him on. I don’t care what side of the plate a guy hits from, a weak OBP is one you can pitch to. Disagree with the IBB.
CaliCub - September 24, 2008

graceunderpressure - September 24, 2008

kcjones - September 24, 2008
Not one of Shark's finer moments. That was the percentage play.
TheTruth11 - September 24, 2008
Here's my thinking though:
You fill the bases and now you Definitely have a chance to allow the Mets to get 1 run. Before, an unintentional walk wouldn’t have hurt and you still have the opportunity to get that guy out.
VegasCubFan - September 24, 2008
I don't disagree with that thinking either...
… just not upset with the Lou’s decision either.
These games don’t matter for us!
Time to experiment and get ready for OCTOBER!!
Seismic Stallion - September 24, 2008
and a single would have scored 2
Shanghai Badger - September 24, 2008
And we would still be in the playoffs...
…repeating what was said belwo, this is not our team at the moment.
You can see the 2008 Cubs on display next week @ Wrigley.

Shanghai Badger - September 24, 2008
Why he was seeing how Jeff responded in a tight situation
we do HAVE that luxury at the moment
I’m OK with it.
Seismic Stallion - September 24, 2008
I'd rather Shark pitched to a .308 OBP (Chavez)
CaliCub - September 24, 2008

slcathena - September 24, 2008
By the way Hill

sue369 - September 24, 2008
Unwritten Rules Being Broken?
You’re not supposed to look back at the catcher when he sets up. Might we see a little chin music in the bottom of the 9th?
CaliCub - September 24, 2008
He's being so obvious as to where he is going to set it up he's telegraphing it to the batter.
You can just look out the corner of your eye and see where he’s going with it.
Weeghman Park - September 24, 2008

that's a good thing
Shanghai Badger - September 24, 2008

I am just not going to freak out over being down one because Shark walked in a run with a AAA catcher tipping pitches behind the plate.
slcathena - September 24, 2008
yeah, I know.
drewishdrewid - September 24, 2008
I'm not freaking out over Shark.
I’m freaking out over Zambrano’s last two starts.
dtpollitt - September 24, 2008
I mean, sure.

However I still stand by my belief that lefty-righty matchups are overblown.
Whether it’s the Mets or Brewers or whoever, any opponent is dangerous and should be respected.
CaliCub - September 24, 2008
For the record...
…I think Right-Left matchups are extremely overblown.
How many times have the cubs had a RHP (Mike Wuertz) better and retiring Leftys than rightys, etc!!!

cowsarecool220 - September 24, 2008

If this was meant to be a tune-up game, it’s disappointing. But if it’s essentially ST in September then you’re right, it doesn’t mean jack.

I see a lot of

25 “LOBs” in the box score. It’s still a large number.
