hopefully this will convince pinella howry should be banished from playoffs. I really think that with the bullpen looking as bad as it does Marquis and Marshall should be the guys for the 6th and 7th inning and lead into Marmol and Wood
I’m just going off history. I don’t see you around too much unless it is to bitch about someone. I’m willing to let it go, no worries, dude with a big ’stache.
Pinch hitters are judged on the hard hit balls that they have over the course of the year.
Whether they are caught, and result in outs, or if they fall in. This is because pinch hitters have limited plate appearances and thereby limited ABs during the season. Ward has hit the ball hard all year, and most of them have found a glove. If a few of those drop in, his average as a PH goes up dramatically. This isn’t even really a contest, Ward will be on the post season roster, not Hoff.
He was great in the minors this year, and he’s been great in his, admittedly limited, major league at bats this year. Ward, on the other hand, has been pretty bad all year.
Even if he hasn’t been great, the question is… who gives you a better chance to win in the playoffs? Hoff, who’s undeniably played great all year (minors and majors) or Ward, who’s struggled all year? I love Ward, but I’m leaning towards Hoff here.
they just don’t work the same way. As Jimmy said, it’s about makign contact with the ball, hitting the ball hard, and having clutch hits. That’s not as easy to measure.
Period. Whether it’s leading off the game, batting cleanup up 8 runs, or pinch hitting. I think it’s kind of silly to say that stats don’t work the same way. As a hitter, your objective is to not make an our (aside from the rare situation where you’re trying for a sac fly). Hoff is better at not making outs.
BAs and other stats. used to judge pinch hitters are different simply because of the disparity of total ABs. No more, no less. So stop trying to educate me on how the objective is not to make an out, that’s obvious to anyone who has ever watched a game.
Hoff is not better at pinch hitting, or playing the field than Ward. Hoff, as much as I like him, is a career minor leaguer. Ward has a proven track record, regardless of his struggles this year. It’s really rather simple.
And I don’t know why you’re not getting it. First off, I’m not trying educate you, I hope it didn’t come off like I’m trying to talk down to you. Sorry if it did.
With that said… who cares about Ward’s track record? The fact is, he’s sucked this year. Sammy Sosa had a hell of a track record, then he fell off. Every player eventually stops being good. It’s absurd to suggest that since Ward was good last year, he’s a better option than Hoff simply because of that. He’s hitting .216 this year. .216! That’s pathetic.
How many ground outs? Fly outs? Line outs? An out is an out, and most of the time a K is no different than a ground out. Sometime’s a K is better than a groundout.
Hoff has MORE hits than Ward, in 2/3’s of the at bats. THAT’s a telling stat… number of K’s isn’t even close to telling you anything.
My dad and I were in the bleachers last weekend with Al, and he was introducing us to everyone. Apparently there’s one woman by the name of Sue…and I instantly said, “THE Sue?!” And she shrugged and said, “No, not THAT Sue!” It was classic. And I did not disguise my disappointment very well!
that you could screw up managing a team that includes Johan (arguably best pitcher in baseball), Reyes (best SS?), Wright (best 3B?), Beltran (top tier OF), Wagner (top tier RP), Pedro (still can bring it…some times), etc., etc.
Hoff would never play D in the postseason, neither would Ward. How did Lee even get into this discussion?
please continue nonsensical childish rant. I’m amused. Oh, when Ward fails in the clutch again, you won’t hear me push for the inclusion of Hoff. At that point, I will root for who ever is playing for the cubs, and if it is Ward, then I am going to support him completely. If it is Theriot, then I am going to support him completely. I just think that while it hasn’t been decided (that we know of), that I feel better with Hoff up than Ward. Ward seems done.
They are MUCH better to listen to – even when the Mets are mounting a comeback or winning. Very professional. They provide the information in an unbiased manner and let the listener determine how to process the information rather than TELLING people what they should think.
I cringe when I have to listen to Cincy or Houston’s announcers. Terrible.
Started getting texts in the later innings from Phillies fans that the Cubs are lying down for the Mets and karma is going to get the Cubs in the playoffs for doing that.
Maybe if the Phillies don’t lose 2 out of 3 to the Braves this week, they wouldn’t have to worry about what the Cubs do.
similar to that. It’s funny how little respect the Cubs get here in the Northeast. Phillies want to play the Cubs because the Phillies have “owned” the Cubs over the past few years. Keep dreaming there!
Mixed feelings, to be honest — and I’m not happy with myself about that.
I can’t help thinking long-term, this might be a better result. Better chance to start against the Mets, better chance to not see the opposition’s ace until game 3 (assuming Carlos starts on Sunday), better chance the NL’s 2nd best team goes home after Sunday.
is it leaves the Mets tied or 1 up. With us going to the Brewers for meaningless games (which we’re still going to try somewhat to win) this goads them both on to sprint to the finish line. Hopefully leaving both tired.
I just think that they’re better than the Mets. Bottom line, of course, is Cubs need to take care of business themselves. Just one of those things that fans think about – and shouldn’t, I suppose.
…but the Rose Bowl is PAC-10 v BIG 10. So granted there’s the probability that if we win out and so do they, we meet at the Rose Bowl anyway. But any loss for USC is good for football (IMO), and it just opens things up for the Badgers to get to the title game. RB is a fall back in that scenario, really.
Having said that, Saturday could be scary. Michy is going to throw a lot more deep balls than FSU did, I think. Still not sure why Fresno didn’t open it up more.
Bob Howry (not pitching well with consistency)
Koyie Hill (not needed; plus horrible defensively. Last night he tipped Samarzidja’s pitches. Tonight he pretended to block the plate 6 feet ahead of it, allowing the runner to run around him and touch home. A good catcher gets the ball from RF and moves back into the runner to tag him; he doesn’t stay put in the middle of the basepaths 6 feet away from home.)
D. Ward (not hitting; Hoffpauir is the hot hand: play it!)
First!

Oh Bob. There you are!
TheTruth11 - September 25, 2008
ahhhhh the brewery
the proprietor (also named joe) is very proud of his fantasy football draft hosting abilities, which are pretty good – i’ve had 3 drafts there.
i will defn be checking that place out for playoff games, very convenient to my office at howard hughes. i’ll buy ya a drink or 3.

Cool
They do have cool drafting abilities.

there was like 3 seconds of dead air!!!!
joeschmitt - September 25, 2008
church ran around the freaking plate almost in a circle
renke81 - September 25, 2008
hill missed him and he overran the base and had to come back and dive on the plate
renke81 - September 25, 2008
I thought you had to stay in the baseline?????

Goat Whisperer - September 25, 2008

TheTruth11 - September 25, 2008
howry's
TJ3117 - September 25, 2008
Hill should have tagged him.
cowsarecool220 - September 25, 2008
hill dove for him, but church just ran too far outside
renke81 - September 25, 2008
Church ran about 6 feet outside the baseline to avoid the tag
hip2bsquare - September 25, 2008

that’s an out
Gibbon Jockey - September 25, 2008

Not good.
Clutch16 - September 25, 2008
I hate Bob Howry
sue369 - September 25, 2008
you dont have to deal with him much longer
Hammer - September 25, 2008
seriously, it's the eighth. Is Howry all we have available? Does Lou still think he can pitch in close games? Fudge
tapdeer - September 25, 2008
probably wanted to test him in back-to-back games
simulate the playoffs. Bob failed.
Bill Potter - September 25, 2008
yeah
why waste marmol? see if howry has anything left
TJ3117 - September 25, 2008
Might as well throw Marmol against the Brewers
and keep them from the playoffs.
Bill Potter - September 25, 2008
agreed.
Bobby Is Done.
cubnational - September 25, 2008
this game doesn't really mean anything but still i don't want to use marmol when you REALLY don't have too

cubnational - September 25, 2008
he'll get some work in yet

he has all weekend
TJ3117 - September 25, 2008
We clinched last Saturday
Employee22 - September 25, 2008
Well, I guess if you go that far out of the base line, it's esay to avoid the tag.
Jimmyeatworld - September 25, 2008
a tie is the worst thing in this kind of game dammit
LT - September 25, 2008
i don't know that the baseline matters on plays at the plate
tapdeer - September 25, 2008
i'm pretty sure it does. I don't think you can run to the backstop and back
renke81 - September 25, 2008
It doesn't.
It stands to reason that when a player, (Church), runs that far out of the base line- he’ll be able to avoid the tag.
Jimmyeatworld - September 25, 2008
Yeah, I agree. He was at least three feet outside the baseline.
The throw was great, Hill was in position, but Church ran way in the hell out of the baseline.
I assume if this is the playoffs. Lou’s out there arguing.
Cubfansince1957 - September 25, 2008
THe throw was not great
it was 6 feet up the line.
That said, our minor league catcher had ample time to set himself and take care of it.
Church had no business being sent on that play….
AND WE LET ’EM OFF THE HOOK!
THE METS ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE!
Gibbon Jockey - September 25, 2008
yeah, but it beat the runner by a ton. If he stays in the baseline....
or even close, he’s out.
Cubfansince1957 - September 25, 2008
IF he stays in the baseline
that’s the argument FOR the throw?
c’mon, you and I both know baseline isn’t a consideration there.
The throw has to be close. And it wasn’t. And the catcher has to handle it. And he didn’t.
Gibbon Jockey - September 25, 2008
While we're bashing Howry (deservedly so)...
let’s not forget about Cotts. He started this mess.
hokie316 - September 25, 2008
true.
would have been nice if he could get left-handers not named Carlos Delgado out.
Bill Potter - September 25, 2008
true BUT ..
at least he doesn’t stink as consistently as Howry seems to do so … i’m tired of the drama of watching a reliever give up runs ..
cubnational - September 25, 2008
dont say that to

CaliCub - September 25, 2008
lets get that guy on the post season roster!!!!
tapdeer - September 25, 2008
He already is. When Lou and Hendry announce it, don't expect Ward to be sitting at home.
Jimmyeatworld - September 25, 2008
Ward: postseason roster, yay or nay?
TheTruth11 - September 25, 2008
nay
tapdeer - September 25, 2008
Good god yes.
Best PH in baseball.
dtpollitt - September 25, 2008
not this year. not even close.
TheTruth11 - September 25, 2008
I'm going to try to find a way to analyze PHers. Gimme a bit.
dtpollitt - September 25, 2008
Pinch hitters are judged on the hard hit balls that they have over the course of the year.
Whether they are caught, and result in outs, or if they fall in. This is because pinch hitters have limited plate appearances and thereby limited ABs during the season. Ward has hit the ball hard all year, and most of them have found a glove. If a few of those drop in, his average as a PH goes up dramatically. This isn’t even really a contest, Ward will be on the post season roster, not Hoff.
Jimmyeatworld - September 25, 2008
I'm not disagreeing with you, he should be on the roster, 100%.
I want some stats of PHers, however. And I’ve never looked at them before.
dtpollitt - September 25, 2008
the stats aren't coming methinks because they refute thy argument.
tapdeer - September 25, 2008
No it is because they are hard to find.
It’s a lot harder to actually do work (find statistics) than it is to bitch about someone not finding them.
dtpollitt - September 25, 2008
ZING!!!!........I'm speechless.
tapdeer - September 25, 2008

yup, that was a good ONE game. Hmmm......aberration?
tapdeer - September 25, 2008
no.
he’s done it before. He’ll do it again.
And Hoff will have many more minor league games ahead of him.
drewishdrewid - September 25, 2008
I sincerely hope that if Ward makes it, then I am eating crow on this later.
tapdeer - September 25, 2008
Hardly.
Ward is a great hitter.
Jimmyeatworld - September 25, 2008
I don't have to show you anything. Ward hits the ball hard.
Jimmyeatworld - September 25, 2008

Hoff, wow!
Could Hoff be playing his way onto the playoff roster over Ward? 5-5 with 2 HR’s and 5 RBI’s has to make Lou reconsider things quite a bit!

cowsarecool220 - September 25, 2008
More than just one game
He was great in the minors this year, and he’s been great in his, admittedly limited, major league at bats this year. Ward, on the other hand, has been pretty bad all year.
kanderber - September 25, 2008
minors = irrelevant.
I don’t think Hoff has been all that great. I’m happy he’s been good today, but I think it’s an abberation.
drewishdrewid - September 25, 2008
he was hitting .300 BEFORE today.
tapdeer - September 25, 2008

drewishdrewid - September 25, 2008
Hoff debate, Riot debate, Howry hate
This thread has everything!
Clutch16 - September 25, 2008
Still
Even if he hasn’t been great, the question is… who gives you a better chance to win in the playoffs? Hoff, who’s undeniably played great all year (minors and majors) or Ward, who’s struggled all year? I love Ward, but I’m leaning towards Hoff here.
kanderber - September 25, 2008
minor league experience
means NOTHING in the post season.
drewishdrewid - September 25, 2008
What?
The ability to hit a baseball is what matters. Right now, Hoff has more of that ability than Ward does. THAT is what matters.
kanderber - September 25, 2008
No, it doesn't.
What matters is the ability to have a good at bat. Ward is a better hitter. You cannot apply minor league ability here.
drewishdrewid - September 25, 2008
+1
Jimmyeatworld - September 25, 2008
The stats disagree with you.
kanderber - September 25, 2008
stats
don’t work for pinch hitters the same way they do for people who get a coupla hundred ABs a season.
drewishdrewid - September 25, 2008
Wait... what?
So stats don’t matter for pinch hitters now? How would you prefer to determine who the better hitter is? Mere observation?
kanderber - September 25, 2008
no
they just don’t work the same way. As Jimmy said, it’s about makign contact with the ball, hitting the ball hard, and having clutch hits. That’s not as easy to measure.
drewishdrewid - September 25, 2008
Hitting is about not making an out.
Period. Whether it’s leading off the game, batting cleanup up 8 runs, or pinch hitting. I think it’s kind of silly to say that stats don’t work the same way. As a hitter, your objective is to not make an our (aside from the rare situation where you’re trying for a sac fly). Hoff is better at not making outs.
kanderber - September 25, 2008
Hitting is not about making an out? Duh!
Jimmyeatworld - September 25, 2008
You're right, it is rather simple.
He’s hitting .216 this year. .216! That’s pathetic.
kanderber - September 26, 2008
he's not?
in a little over half the at bats, Hoff has nearly as many strikeouts as Ward.
drewishdrewid - September 25, 2008
Thank you, my friend...
Jimmyeatworld - September 25, 2008
So what?
How many ground outs? Fly outs? Line outs? An out is an out, and most of the time a K is no different than a ground out. Sometime’s a K is better than a groundout.
Hoff has MORE hits than Ward, in 2/3’s of the at bats. THAT’s a telling stat… number of K’s isn’t even close to telling you anything.
kanderber - September 26, 2008
They don't work in the same way due to the sheer number of ABs.
Jimmyeatworld - September 25, 2008
If you don't believe me, ask BB, ask Stoney the evil., hell...

Jimmyeatworld - September 25, 2008

Hart has no MLB track record so who know’s with him.

please continue nonsensical childish rant. I’m amused. Oh, when Ward fails in the clutch again, you won’t hear me push for the inclusion of Hoff. At that point, I will root for who ever is playing for the cubs, and if it is Ward, then I am going to support him completely. If it is Theriot, then I am going to support him completely. they are some of the best announcers in the league. very unbiased and interesting information
renke81 - September 25, 2008
Agreed. I am impressed with them as well.
Terrible.

………Astros management slinks out of the building…….
Gibbon Jockey - September 25, 2008
you know
if the Brewers hadn’t selfishly built a domed stadium, the Astros would never have lost that game.
drewishdrewid - September 25, 2008
Damm, Houston just needs to Sierra Tango Foxtrox Uniform
How about looking in the mirror and blaming the 3-17 funk in late May through mid-June.
Goat Whisperer - September 25, 2008
So Mets and Brewers keep doing the same thing until Sunday
Then we beat the Brewers to ruin their dreams.
nji232 - September 25, 2008
I got a feeling the Marlins are going to kick some butt
if they get to play this weekend…
LT - September 25, 2008
nite all
MOCubsfan - September 25, 2008
night
sue369 - September 25, 2008
yea d-lee woulda got that play
lexmarklover - September 25, 2008
hit pretty hard, I dispute that.
Gibbon Jockey - September 25, 2008
I think
the percentages would probably have been in Lee’s favor — he performs magic with that glove. But it did sound hard hit.
drewishdrewid - September 25, 2008
i guess but who cares really.
we know 2 things for sure: kevin hart + bobby howry are not going to pitch in the playoffs
lexmarklover - September 25, 2008
also
a mostly AAA team ALMOST beat the Mets.
drewishdrewid - September 25, 2008
yea
they actually did in the first game
lexmarklover - September 25, 2008
All right kids
I’m off
the ledgeto bed.’Night.
Clutch16 - September 25, 2008
LOL
Started getting texts in the later innings from Phillies fans that the Cubs are lying down for the Mets and karma is going to get the Cubs in the playoffs for doing that.
Maybe if the Phillies don’t lose 2 out of 3 to the Braves this week, they wouldn’t have to worry about what the Cubs do.
PhillyCub - September 25, 2008
You tell Philly fan
to stuff a cheezsteak up their collective asses and remember we could give a flip about the Mets. We’d rather screw the Brewers.
Gibbon Jockey - September 25, 2008
I told them something
similar to that. It’s funny how little respect the Cubs get here in the Northeast. Phillies want to play the Cubs because the Phillies have “owned” the Cubs over the past few years. Keep dreaming there!
PhillyCub - September 25, 2008
Time to
DFA Howry in my dreams.
Um.
That’s not a euphamism.
Night, all.
drewishdrewid - September 25, 2008
Night drew.
Guess we’ll have to push Ward for President later…
Jimmyeatworld - September 25, 2008
good nite and yea dfa howry
lexmarklover - September 25, 2008
night Drew
sue369 - September 25, 2008
Did everybody leave?
Jimmyeatworld - September 25, 2008
I'm here.
Just got here tho
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
Welcome,
So are you upset with this loss?
Jimmyeatworld - September 25, 2008
Thanks.
But man, that bullpen….
You?
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
One other thing
is it leaves the Mets tied or 1 up. With us going to the Brewers for meaningless games (which we’re still going to try somewhat to win) this goads them both on to sprint to the finish line. Hopefully leaving both tired.
chitownhawkeye - September 25, 2008
Yes, absolutely
The Phillies, too — they only have a 1 game lead.
Also, it puts the whiners on the brink — one more ’stro loss or Met win eliminates Houston.
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
O/T
but the twinkies have tied it up. The ledge jumping in Sox land must be impressive today
chitownhawkeye - September 25, 2008
That triple was something else
Doesn’t matter to me who wins, but that was an exciting play.
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
Wish I had seen it.
I hate that dome, but I’ll give it one thing, it’s cavernous that some impressive plays can happen
chitownhawkeye - September 25, 2008
Two fast runners going 270'
was pretty cool
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
Oh well.
Wish the bullpen had looked better, but I think they’ll be fine. Howry is what he is at this point.
A split when playing the JV versus the Mets varsity isn’t too shabby. Still hope the Cubs see them in a week.
Bill Potter - September 25, 2008
You're right, of course
But my inner Cub fan cringes at that relief performance.
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
If We Can't Win 100.....
I’ll take 99 !!!!
nervousCUBlover - September 25, 2008
Would you believe
98 and 11 in October?
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
ha, i would do ANYTHING for 11 in October!!!
nervousCUBlover - September 25, 2008
anything, huh?
CubFaninNY - September 25, 2008
Hawk is miffed!
6-6 top 9.
CubFaninNY - September 25, 2008
Brewers win 5-1
Braun w/walk-off grand slam, w 2 out and 2-2 count
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
That's what we wanted, right?
CubFaninNY - September 25, 2008
Id rather play the mets
Brewers are getting hot
cubsfaninatl - September 25, 2008
Although, they're playing the Pirates
And they could have easily lost tonight and Monday.
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
I'm not afraid of the Brewers.
CC can’t pitch 3 games in a row. And we’ve beat him in two of his starts.
dtpollitt - September 25, 2008
I'm not afraid, either
But I work in Milwaukee . . . .
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
Not sure
I want them going into Sunday separated by 1 game, but I don’t want the Brewers in. Rather play NY than LA.
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
If the Brewers get in Cubs play LA?
CubFaninNY - September 25, 2008
Yup.
ScottieG33 - September 25, 2008
why are we afraid of them?
Manny?
CubFaninNY - September 25, 2008
We're not
I just think that they’re better than the Mets. Bottom line, of course, is Cubs need to take care of business themselves. Just one of those things that fans think about – and shouldn’t, I suppose.
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
Sox + Twins go to Bottom 9, 6-6
nervousCUBlover - September 25, 2008
vtyd453s5dfuce3s634sturcfuce457!!!
dtpollitt - September 25, 2008
what's that all about?
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
Brewers...
dtpollitt - September 25, 2008
ah
Yeah. Well, they aren’t playing the Pirates tomorrow.
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
USC is roaring back, too, DAMNIT.
dtpollitt - September 25, 2008
What the hell...?
ORE ST looked so good in the first 1/2
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
Twins just won.
dtpollitt - September 25, 2008
wow the sox have just fallen apart
VillanuevaExperience - September 25, 2008
Deep doo-doo for the Sox
They play CLE while the Twins get KC
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
I believe since Aug 1
The Royals have the 2nd best record in AL or MLB, I can’t remember which. Heard it on the KC radio today.
dtpollitt - September 25, 2008
Must be Sept 1
16-7 so far.
dtpollitt - September 25, 2008
Well, maybe it's not so bad, then
What a weekend for baseball, though.
Three teams in the NL fighting for 2 spots, and the AL Central up for grabs.
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
TWINKIES WIN
CubFaninNY - September 25, 2008
Dan, still watching the football game?
How about that punt?
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
Gamecasting. Playing my new Nintendo Wii SUPER MARIO GALAXY.
dtpollitt - September 25, 2008
mama mia!
CubFaninNY - September 25, 2008
Was off the side of the punter's foot
Bounced, then rolled about 15 yards to the USC 6
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
Good. Down with USC.
dtpollitt - September 25, 2008
Dat's right
Until Bucky loses, there’s a chance! It’s ridiculous to even think that, but . . . there’s a chance!
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
I mean, this is way to ahead of ourselves...
…but the Rose Bowl is PAC-10 v BIG 10. So granted there’s the probability that if we win out and so do they, we meet at the Rose Bowl anyway. But any loss for USC is good for football (IMO), and it just opens things up for the Badgers to get to the title game. RB is a fall back in that scenario, really.
dtpollitt - September 25, 2008
Most definitely
Having said that, Saturday could be scary. Michy is going to throw a lot more deep balls than FSU did, I think. Still not sure why Fresno didn’t open it up more.
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
I posted this earlier.
Michigan is 100/120 in points/game, 88/120 in rushing, and 101/120 in passing.
dtpollitt - September 25, 2008
ah. well, I like that, but
still always tough for Bucky in the Big House
Shanghai Badger - September 25, 2008
3 players off the playoffs roster:
Bob Howry (not pitching well with consistency)
Koyie Hill (not needed; plus horrible defensively. Last night he tipped Samarzidja’s pitches. Tonight he pretended to block the plate 6 feet ahead of it, allowing the runner to run around him and touch home. A good catcher gets the ball from RF and moves back into the runner to tag him; he doesn’t stay put in the middle of the basepaths 6 feet away from home.)
D. Ward (not hitting; Hoffpauir is the hot hand: play it!)
Fraggin Judge - September 25, 2008
This gamne is all but over. Let's hope the missed PAT doesn't come back to bite them in the ass.
dtpollitt - September 25, 2008
Yep. it's over
and I’m out. good nite!
