First Pitch Thread: Cubs vs. Brewers, Saturday 9/27, 2:55 CT

"Pro-rated at 500 at-bats per year, my 1,081 strike-outs would mean that for 2 years out of the 14 I played, I never touched the ball." -- Norm Cash

Let's go JV Cubs.
lol!
the Brewers are countering with Rickie Weeks

so I guess it balances out.

Rickie Weeks doesn't hit poorly for a second baseman.

This would matter more if he was able to adequately field his position.

I know. I misplaced the sarcasm button somewhere along the way.
A .745 OPS is OK for a 2B???

Not trying to be a smart-ass, just asking….

DeRo’s .791 last year wasn’t good enough for Lou; he wanted TNO. And, I think I can safely say, DeRo has a much better glove than Weeks.

Wow. Our lineup today is so bad that they're not even getting someone to read it for them.
Hey look!

The Brewers are wearing their pajamas as home unis today!

Getting ready for their long winter's nap
My Fox affiliate had the Red Sox-Yanks game scheduled

But there in a rain delay…and I get the Cubs game instead!!!

Ditto...

…and I’ll be ticked off if they switch back to it if the rain lets up.

who are the announcers?
and isn't this the game Sue's attending?
I think so
dang no Geo or Lee

she was going to get us Geo pics and one for me of Lee tying his shoes :-(

Yea that sucks!

I didnt get to see Soto last week either. Not fair!

they should give us refunds if

we go to the park and there’s no Geo

I'm calling my cable company

to request a national Geo channel

Absolutely!

If there is a petition started this week, it should be 40k strong by spring trainging to present to the organization.

Josh Llewellyn? and Mark Grace?
Lewin and Grace.
thanks
Lewin had the call last weekend too.

So maybe that karma will carry over.

two former cub employees
they're pitiful
"He's just a good young hitter."

Um… Micah Hoffpauir isn’t young. Dear Lord.

And Daryle Ward makes his case for the postseason roster

2-run HR. 2-0 Cubs

Yep

this argument if there was one is settled

The debate was between...

Ward vs. Hoffpauir, right?

I don't know - does he need 4 more hits and another homer to answer Hoffpauir?

Don't have to run if you put the ball there.

Which is a great thing when you can’t run.

I think that Ward would beat Hoffpauir in a 60 yd. dash....

…not that either of them would be faster than my grandmother.

DARYLE!

WOOT WOOT

Sheets obviously isn't 100%...

…but it looks like he isn’t out there just throwing the ball and praying, either.

How was the pitch he threw to DWard?

Mistake or not?

Don't know.

Can’t rewind it right now – wasn’t looking at where the catcher was set up at the time. But he wasn’t simply throwing BP out there, he was actually pitcing.

89-mph fastball

belt high, down the chute. probably wanted it up more than it was.

Thanks, I think Sheets will be fine then

just would not extend him in this game.

Looks like Sheets has a heating blanket on his elbow and arm right now

don’t know if that’s standard for him or not

probably so for him.
I won't pretend to know Sheets' between inning regimen

but it looked curious to me. I think he’s trying to keep the arm and elbow loose.

yeah I agree, esp. since it is warm

today in Milwaukee.

that's what got me thinking.

it’s not cold up there – looks like a great day.

I unfortunately have to watch the Nats-Phils on my Fox affiliate...

Time to look for some other way besides MLB.TV to see the game….

PS: I admit it, Ward is a better choice than Hoff :-)

Okay, I want to know why Sharp thinks that a baseball fan...

…will buy a TV on advice of a university professor.

you mean that weird albino guy they CLAIM is an astrophysics professor? (I don't know the guy)
Mets win 2-0
So Milwaukee can't clinch

leading to the dilemma: start CC tomorrow or hold him back for a possible 1-game playoff on Monday?

if they lose, he goes

if they win, they hold him

that would be today

and my opinion

SEE!

The Brewers got someone to read their lineup for them!

i think Lewin mentioned that Ward was a late addition to the lineup

so maybe they had to scrap Theriot or whomever reading the lineup.

Lilly's lookin good today
Indeed
Why isn't he batting 8th? :-)
Why isn't he batting lead-off? He's a better hitter than the guy who is there...
College football upset

Mississippi 31, No. 4 Florida 30

Haha I watched the ending of that

Blocked punt lost it for them

Florida missed a PAT that would have tied it
Yeah thats what I meant

Dunno what I was thinking

no worries.

then Tebow got stuffed on a 4th and 1 that would have given them a chance at getting in field goal range

I laughed at the commentator

when he said “I DONT KNOW THE SECOND EFFORT MIGHT HAVE GOT IT” and he was like a whole yard from the yellow line

yeah, it was woefully short
Oh well, helps out my Bulldogs even more
Early College Football Top 25 finals

Ole Miss 31, No. 4 Florida 30
No. 14 Ohio St. 34, Minnesota 21
Maryland 20, No. 17 Clemson 17

Has anyone ever seen McGehee play middle IF in the minors?

He doesn’t look quick enough to play MI in the ML, and I doubt that he has a ML 3B bat.

What part of "worst baseball player ever"

don’t you understand? :)

Worse than Hoffpauir???? Botts????? :-)

Don’t the Cubs have a genuine 4A SS they could have called up for September emergencies like Cedeno sliding head-first and jamming his shoulder and DeRo pulling a muscle?

I sometimes wake up at night in a cold sweat screaming...

…the name of whoever our shortstop in AAA is. (It changes without ever improving.)

T.R. with the big stick!!!!
Lilly = awesomeness
Ted the Bulldog with a ground-rule double

2nd and 3rd, 2 out

Lilly

Settin up the chance to plow someone at the plate

Lilly commands the ball into a double
I wish I had confidence in Dome...
I wish Dome had confidence in Dome.
Hi DeRo, don't bother bringing your IF glove next week...
I have confidence that over the winter

and into spring training he will fine tune his approach. To start with he fooled ptchers, but they figured him out and have been fooling him. I don’t think he is a lost cause at all.

Ditto

I really hope he works hard during ST

I tend to agree

Having seen how much better a hitter Hideki Matsui was after hisfist season w/ the Yankees.

I agree that he will be better in 2009. However, I don't think he will figure things out before next Wednesday.

Thus, a good 2B becomes an average RF, and a good bench player becomes an adequate 2B, and the bench gains a PR.

Dome fly out to center. 3 outs

2-0 Cubs, middle 2

For those in desperate need to watch the game with a video stream on your computer

I have it running, but it requires a lot of buffering, and you need the tvant streaming client to see it. I might go back to the MLB audio feed from Pat and Ron.

http://www.myp2p.eu/index.php?part=sports

Just click on the row with the Brewers vs. Cubs. It is a few minutes behind the actual game because of buffering issues, and it’s not easy to find the tvant client on the internet.

ESPN thinks that this will be Sheets' crowning achievement if he wins this game?

I mean, he is facing the Iowa Cubs (and losing)…

I think it probably would be.

It’s a great story if he pulls it off. And it would put to bed the idea that he isn’t mentally tough.

Haha

as someone said on evil BCB, Fielder K’s on the nipple high fastball.

You mean it was at his waist?
Fielder looks like

he ate all the nachos in the park today for a pre game snack. Or maybe its the fact that he isn’t wearing a more slimming dark color.

I think he isn't wearing his gertle (sp.?) today.
There is no slimming color for someone that fat.
and that's why Theriot is the starting SS

(even if he isn’t "great")

back to Cedeno again, I see sigh
You have to think...

… that Grace said to himself “I would have gotten that.”

"Stone Hands" Rickie Weeks at bat...

Why didn’t Ned try him in CF last year instead of moving Bill Hall there?

The Brewers “brain trust” have to be idiots to sign a GO pitcher like Suppan and back him up with that IF.

I do get a kick out of how Weeks waggles his bat
Imitating Sheffield...

Too bad that Sheff was a better IF (in the minors) than Weeks is…

Well isnt that ironic
Don't ya think?
my favorite form of humor
It's like raaaiiinnn

on your Yankees game

Ahh, I'll be joining the game thread for a while...

Until I can find somewhere to watch the game. TV is being used, unfortunately.

for the record...

that would have been a good time for cedeno to slide head first into 1b.

lol announcers commenting on what a big

veggie Fielder is

They called him

the most athletic person on the team, if I heard it right.

“First basemen are always the most athletic on their teams”

That was grace, with tongue in cheek
yep, that was...
Colin,

Is there a web site that lists the league (or ML) average OPS (or other good stat) at each position? You said that you think Weeks is OK offensively at 2B? I guess that .745 seems more like a SS…

Baseball Reference should have it on the splits page.

Typically, though, a second baseman is a league-average hitter, so it’s not tough to figure out. He’s not a horrible hitter for a second baseman, but realistically he shouldn’t be playing second.

OK, so you might expect a 2B to be about 100 OPS+??

On NL OPS+, are pitchers and PHers included in calculating averages? Or is it just “qualifiers” that determine the 100 level?

Believe pitchers are excluded, PHers included.
uh oh

here comes 100 years

On Shortstops

IMHO We don’t necesarily need an Ozzie Smith or an Omar Vizquel in his prime. Just a guy who can consitently make all the routine plays in ways that give confidence to the pitcher and other players on the field. Larry Bowa was a good example of someone like that. Unfortunately, neither Cedeno nor Theriot quite fit the mold.

DeRo does...

…so obviously Lou wants something else.

Lou

I think he wants Theriot’s OBP in the lineup and is willing to sacrifice some D to get it.

Wow

Sheets may have just got squeezed right there, that was close. Oh well I’ll take it I hate the Brewers.

Go Twins!
was just going to type that
was just going to type

“was just going to type that”

Ben Sheets almost at 50 pitches in the 3rd.
Ben Sheets with a valiant effort nonethless

but he is NOT effective today

woo hoo loaded bases!

someone take away their keys

Go Nats!
I know why I care about the Twins.

Why do you care about the Nationals?

I want the Mets and Phils to tie and the Brewers also.

Extra games on Mon AND Tue

I am liking your thinking here
go nats is like rooting for a dyslexic kid to win a spelling bee
Go Dyslexic kid! Win that Spelling Bee!
Bases juiced for LBR
Oh yeah!

4-0 Sneaky!

And he comes through!
Maddux to Sheets:

Ben, you don’t have to be so fine. This is their B team.

Ben: Mike, I know. But they are hitting everything I put in the strike zone…

I love fontenot.

I would love to see him as the starter next year.

You want DeRo traded?
Nah, but I like a LH bat at 2b
Sorry, Ben

schmoked by the AAA Cubs

I think that at-bat pretty much set the starting lineup for the playoffs.
As in, "DeRo, you need your big glove today."???
Am I the only one who thinks that Hoffpauir is slower than the tortoise?
Is Anyone Concerned

…about the mental health of Brewers fans right now? Hope no one in Milwaukee harms themselves or others,

I was more worried about Mets fans the other night
yeaahhhhhhhhhhhhhNO
impossible to have

carbon monoxide poisoning in an RV.

No. Tomorrow I might, but they can't be eliminated today.
They aren't as tempered in the ways

of Cubs fans. We are survivors and we will get our pay off for it!

just strolled over to evil BCB

they’re surprisingly calm… mostly sympathetic for sheets

I kind of am too

Not best of situations to throw an injured pitcher into. That’s without even mentioning the mental game even if they aren;’t out of the race today.

Bases juiced for TRL
I think I just saw Rickie Weeks make a good play!
Quick!! Buy a lottery ticket!!!
Weeks actually did good there

Initially I thought he had thrown it away.

he's done for the game...

law of averages soon returns

wow

lilly with a near GS
